OF the four papers that comprise this Technical Publication, three are case histories of individual geophysical prospects, subsequently tested by drilling. The bibliography of Dr. Barton's published scientific paperst includes investigations in physiography and surface geological mapping, as well as his geophysical papers, and from this list it is to be observed that he early recognized the place of different types of geophysical prospecting methods in the search for geological structures of economic importance. Moreover, his viewpoint was not merely that the structures should be found, but that the geophysical data should be examined quantitatively to determine the geometry of the structures. In other words, that although these data are insufficient to deduce a unique form for the structure that caused the effects measured in the data, the engineering computations should be carried out to give as much of a definite configuration to the structure as the data permitted, in order that the testing of the structures could be conducted in the most economical manner and with the idea that the experience so gained could be later incorporated in the study of structures subsequently found. Dr. Barton continually emphasized the quantitative use of geophysical observations, whereas at the time that he began his specialization in geophysics it was considered sufficient to use observations only qualitatively. He, more than any one else, was responsible for the first volume on geophysical prospecting issued by the Institute in 1929, and his three articles in that volume stressed the quantitative use of geophysical prospecting. The fourth article in this present Technical Publication is a further contribution to this branch of geophysical interpretation, and is a supplement to the paper in the 1929 volume, "Calculations in the Interpretation of Observations with the Eötvös Torsion Balance." At its meeting on February 21, 1933, the Board of Directors passed the following resolution defining and expressing the policy of the Institute with respect to official participation or action in controversial matters: WHEREAS, the Board of Directors at its last meeting passed the following resolution: "The Board of Directors, having been appealed to by several Local Sections for advice concerning the attitude and policy of the Institute relating to the endorsement of candidates for public office, the following statement of policy is formulated: "Whereas, the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is organized for purely professional and scientific purposes, and whereas diversity of opinion among its members on partisan or political questions is inevitable, it is the expressed policy of the Institute to refrain from official participation or action, in political and semi-political matters." AND WHEREAS, appeals for additional advice have been received: NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS RE¬SOLVED: (1) That the policy of the Institute is to refrain from official participation or action in controversial non-technical economic subjects; further (2) That if any Local Section is in doubt as to the application of this policy to any particular subject, it should communicate with the Secretary of the Institute for advice.

A GOOD idea of the magnitude of the underground operations at Climax can be gained from the following figures. A little more than 43,000,000 tons has been drawn from the mine and of this amount, 40,500,000 tons has been drawn in the past ten years and 12,000,000 tons was drawn in two of the war years. The maximum daily average output over a period of one month was slightly more than 20,000 tons but during this period, production on certain days was 24,000 tons, and 9000 tons was produced in a single eight-hour shift. This production came chiefly from 260 draw points although all of them were never in operation at one time. The haulage system for these draw points is made up of 7.5 miles of 36-in.-gauge track, and 131,000 ft. of subsidiary drifts and 44,000 ft. of raises have been driven to develop the necessary broken ore reserves for this high production. Power consumption is often considered an index of operating efficiency. In 1943, the year of maximum production, the mine power consumption was 19,223,000 kw.-hr. or 3 kw.-hr. per ton; in 1945 it was 3.5 kw.-hr. per ton. To handle this amount of power, there are four transformer stations and one switch station in the mine. Mr. Garrabrant, the chief electrician, describes the electrical installation in this issue.

The controlled amounts of phosphorus, arsenic, sulphur or selenium found in commercial coppers perform a variety of highly useful functions. Indeed, a large segment of modern copper technology is essentially dependent upon the presence of one or more of these elements. Consequently, the literature contains many references to their effects but the scope is broad and has been only partly covered. New data are presented herewith directed toward a better understanding of the basic behavior of these elements in copper, with particular emphasis on the composition range o to 0.05 per cent. These data are a part of a general program of research on the effects of impurities on the properties of oxygen-bearing and oxygen-free copper, other portions of which have been reported previously. Schematically, the behavior of individual elements is determined from measurements of conductivity and softening temperature,'v2 and the binary alloys employed are synthesized from high-purity copper in order to eliminate interference from the effects of extraneous impurities. Alloys of selected composition were first prepared in the oxygen-free form by continuously casting the melts in the form of %-in. diameter rod. Oxygen was added subsequently to portions of the alloys, either by remelting or by diffusion at 8jo°C. from a surface scale. Test wires wcre drawn one B. and S. number per pass, using four 30-min. 600°C. anneals at 0.3125, 0.257, 0.204 and 0.162 in., and a final cold reduction of 75 per cent to 0.081 in. Oxygen-bearing slugs made by remelting nere hot-rolled to 4ia in.. drawn to 0.162 in., annealed for 30 min. at 6o0°C. and cold-drawn 75 per cent to 0.081 inch. The alloys containing phosphorus, having been compounded very early in the program, were prepared in the form of 3i6-in. rod, and processed to wire with only the last three intermediate anneals listed above, all of these having been conducted in commercial nitrogen. In addition, the conductivity anneals on these alloys were also performed in the same atmosphere, and the small amount of oxygen present as an impurity in the gas resulted in some loss of accuracy at temperatures of 700' to 8o0°C., as will be shown later. Subsequently, the anneals for all oxygen-free alloys were conducted in hydrogen to prevent oxidation, and purified nitrogen was employed only for oxygen-bearing samples. All conductivity anneals wcre of one hour duration followed by a rapid quench in 10 per cent HZSO*. The primary purpose of the Institute is to advance the technologic and engineering arts embraced by it through inter- change of knowledge. This can best be done by the presentation and discussion of technical papers by its members. Short practical papers are especially welcome. An author should always satisfy himself that his material is of a quality that will be a credit to him and to the Institute. The preparation of a good paper frequently leads to a reorientation of the author's thoughts, and publication contributes much to the professional standing of the author. Members are urged to submit papers presenting the results of their work. Attention to the following suggestions will greatly further the prompt and efficient handling of manuscripts.

A method is presented for obtaining porosities of consolidated formations from the drill returns. The method provides a means of determining the bulk volume of a large number of particles, such as drill cuttings, by employing a capillary diaphragm for removal of surplus surface liquid from saturated cuttings having pores of capillary size, which reduces tile amount of error present in former attempts to determine the porosity of drill cuttings. The method makes it possible to obtain a considerable amount of supplementary data on consolidated formations. Introduction Porosity is a direct measure Of the volume of the voids in a formation. It may be used for estimating the permeability of a formation provided that a correlation of these two properties has been obtained from the analysis of cores from the particular formation, and it forms a desirable aid in interpreting electric logs.1 These useful applications have emphasized the importance of developing a method for determining the porosity of the formations penetrated by a well by some means other than coring, for even in exploration wells it is neither economical nor practical to core all formations. Also, in wells where at the outset the coring program appears comprehensive, it is frequently found that, after certain layers are drilled. more complete information is required for evaluation. Porosity values, if obtainable, would be of great assistance in such cases. In soft formations it is usually possible to obtain porosities after drilling with cores taken by side-wall coring devices. In hard consolidated formations, that coring procedure is not alway practicable and other methods for determining porosities must be resorted to. A first choice is the examination of drill cuttings. if an analytical procedure is available that is both accurate and reasonably rapid. Such a procedure has been devised and is applicable to sand and limestone cuttings having pores of capillary size. Although imp,ovements can yet be made, it is believed that the new technique is sufficiently well developed to warrant description, Preparation of Sample The well samples containing the cuttings representative of the particular intervals are first washed through a No' 6 gauge screen. The cuttings remaining on the Screen are large enough to use lor the porosity measurements' From the sized sample, the cuttings to be examined are separated from the shale and Other extraneous particles. It is recommended that 10 to 15 c.c. of the selected cuttings be used for measurements, although only 4 to 5 c c. were used to make the comparative tests described later in this article. These cuttings are extracted and dried by the same methods used for preparing core samples for porosity and other measurements. The purpose of this investigation has been to study one method for making ordinary carbon steel by the powder metallurgy technique. This method con- sists of pressing and subsequently sintering an intimate mixture of iron powder and gaphite in a suitable atmosphere to Produce a steel. Two types of iron Powder have been studied, electrolytic and reduced. The sinkring of mixtures of loose Car-bonyf iron and carbon black for several hours at I000 to 1100 C. (1830' to 2010°F.), followed by forging of the resultant ingots to bars, has been studied by Offermann.' TrailZ has reported on the properties of hydrogen-reduced and electrolytic iron powders, both containing 0.5 per cent carbon. Methods for making steel bodies by powder metallurgy have also been sug- gested by Goetzel13 who recommends the addition of steel powder of well-defined carbon content to pure iron powder, and Volterra,~ who suggests compaction and subsequent sintering of a mixture of steel powder, iron oxide and iron powder. Additional methods for making steel bodies by powder metallurgy have been reported in the literature by Kohering Allen,6 Balke,7 Wulff,8 Boegehold,9 and others.,0,11,12 It is felt that the method of pressing iron powder and graphite, as described herein, lends itself best to production be-Cause of the lubricating action of the

MELTING procedures for most metals and alloys usually include some provision for the control of oxygen, since this element frequently has some undesirable effect on the properties of the metal or alloy concerned. In the melting of the various bronzes, this is especially true, since oxygen can be introduced into the melt in a number of ways, most of which are difficult to control. In making bronzes from virgin materials, oxygen is usually present in the commercial grades of copper used; electrolytic he refined copper ingots usually contain from 0.02 to 0.05 per cent oxygen. When ingot metal or scrap bronze is used in the charge, oxides are almost always present to some degree. Under certain melting conditions and in certain types of melting equipment the atmosphere over the metal may be highly oxidizing. This, of course, may be desirable in the melting practice used, but is certain to introduce appreciable amounts of oxygen into the melt, and that may not be entirely desirable. From the foundry viewpoint oxygen may have several harmful effects on bronzes. The formation of excessive amounts of oxides may produce drossy metal, which, in turn, means dirty castings and a potentially high rejection rate. It is claimed, too, that oxides in the metal may combine with hydrogen to form steam and thereby produce porosity in certain of the bronzes. The presence of certain refractory oxides, such as SnO2, may be undesirable from the viewpoint of making machining difficult, or as possible stress-raisers in the metal matrix. It is often said that excessive oxide present in the liquid metal makes the metal run sluggishly. Since it appears impractical to try to control the amount of oxygen introduced into the metal beyond taking the economical limit of precaution about charging dirty scrap, it would seem that control of the oxygen content of the liquid metal offers the most promising approach to this problem. This might be done by using slags, or covers, or by the use of some element or compound added to the melt to remove oxygen preferentially. Most aspects of this problem have been considered and considerable work has been done along these lines. A reconsideration of the problem is indicated, however, by the controversial nature of the evidence at hand, especially on the possibility of using a chemical deoxidizer to control the oxygen content of bronzes. CHOICE OF DEOXIDIZER The choice of the chemical agent selected as a deoxidizer would naturally depend first on the alloy in which it is to be used; in this particular case the alloy is Navy gun metal. Several very interesting articles have been written on the caving system of mining, but most of these papers have dealt separately with the slusher system or the chute and grizzly system. In this paper, a comparison will be made of the two methods, both of which are being used at the Climax mine. The mine is on the Continental Divide, in central Colorado, at an altitude of approximately 11,500 ft. above sea level. The long, cold winters, characteristic of the high Rockies, create a number of operating problems not usually found in other mining areas. The Ore Body The Climax ore body is just east of the Mosquito fault. This structural deformation has brought the granite on the east against the sedimentary rocks on the west. The ore occurs in an intensely altered granite and schist around a silicified granite core. The ore is in a highly fractured zone of moderate silicification. The principal mineral, molybdenite, is found in these fractures. Barren dikes of granite porphyry cut through the ore body and core with no apparent regularity. The grade of the ore is fairly uniform and gradually decreases toward the footwall core and also into the hanging-wall granite. The footwall and hanging wall are determined entirely by assays. The ore body is roughly dome-shaped, with the apex truncated at the surface. It is covered to varying depths with talus. A horizontal section of the ore body on the Phillipson level appears as an annular ellipse surrounding the footwall core. The ring of ore varies in width from 300 ft. to as much as 800 ft. The north-south axis of the core is about 1200 ft. and the east-west axis is about 1800 ft. In the ore zone, the rock is sufficiently strong to maintain reasonably large openings, and openings larger than haulage drifts usually have to be supported. The ore is cut by a great many fractures and shears and breaks into rather large blocks when caved, necessitating considerable secondary blasting. The waste that overlies the ore body breaks relatively fine in comparison with the size of the blocks of the caved ore and tends to run through the broken ore in the cave, causing dilution unless the draw is carefully controlled. Mining Systems For several years the ore was mined by the chute and grizzly system, a system that differs from that used in other caving mines only in the size of openings and equipment. The regular activities of the Institute are financed mainly by income derived from members' dues, from advertising in MINING AND METALLURGY, and from the sale of publications to the public. In addition, collateral activities and special projects are financed each year by means of income from endowed funds controlled and administered by the Institute. In the aggregate, the amount of these endowments totals more than $684,000. An active effort is being made to increase the endowment funds of the Institute through a standing committee, of which Henry Krumb is Chairman, and of which the other members are: George D. Barron, Cleveland E. Dodge, John V. N. Dorr, Howard N. Eavenson, D. %. Jack- ling, Harvey S. Mudd, Wallace E. Pratt, Milnor Roberts, and Wilfred Sykes. This committee believes that there exists a tremendous opportunity for the Institute to be of evergrowing service to the public, to the mineral industries, and to the profession. It welcomes suggestions as to names of men of means who are vitally interested in the mineral industries, and to whom the opportunity to make a contribution or bequest might appeal favorably if presented in the proper light.

The place of geophysics in the curriculum of a college or an engineering school has been much discussed. There is uncertainty as to whether the graduate may be called a "geological geophysicist" or a "geophysical geologist." Some have used the term "geophysical engineer." The question of the specialized undergraduate curriculum versus a general undergraduate training in the parent sciences with the addition of cultural electives has been and is still being argued. The literature during the past Io years shows that there are two rather definite schools of thought on this subject. The prospective employer, engaged in active geophysical exploration, visualizes the graduate in terms of the routine work he will do in the field. The school administrator, grounded in many years of tradition in the cultural type of education, visualizes the graduate in terms of his position in a political and cultural society as well as in his work as a professional geophysicist. Both are right and both wrong. A third school of thought, that of the student himself, has been almost totally ignored. It would seem best, for the purpose of this paper, to treat these various points and allied material separately, and then to integrate the conclusions as a set of conditions that should be fulfilled as far as possible in the ideal curriculum. At the end the relationship of our findings to the curriculum that has been tentatively adopted at the University of Pittsburgh will be considered. Divisions in Definition or Field of Geophysics Geophysics is that field of science in which geological and earth problems are solved with the use of physical and chemical techniques. Altogether too much attention has been paid to the artificial separation in this science of the commercial applications from the so-called "pure" or academic geophysics. The only real difference in the two types of work is one of scale of operations. In the commercial field the scale is large in terms of fmancial backing, immediate economic importance, and speed of operations. In the academic field the scale is large in terms of breadth of interests, in eventual economic importance, and length of time allowable for theoretical investigations. In exploration work the scale is small in terms of dimensions, since the methods are applicable only to the outer 20,000 ft. or SO of the earth's crust. In academic work, the student is not pressed for results of immediate economic importance, and therefore can afford to spend more time on problems that seem unimportant at the time. In the sense of background knowledge of the parent sciences necessary to the geophysicist, no essential difference can be found. Physics, chemistry, geology, and mathematics together, and in their proper proportionate amounts, form the matrix from which geophysical ideas and methods may spring.

One of the earliest problems in the life of any community is the provision of an adequate supply of water sufficiently free from all types of contamination to be suitable for domestic purposes. Generally speaking, the location of most communities is determined to a great extent by the availability of an adequate supply of satisfactory water. For a mining camp, that consideration cannot be foremost. Here, the ore takes first place, and the men who mine it must do the best they can under the existing conditions. If there is no local source of water, it must be brought from some distant source or must be found by sinking shafts or drilling wells. Fortunate indeed is the mining company that discovers a commercially valuable ore deposit beside a never failing creek full of pure water, with sufficient water rights available. because the acquisition of water in any other manner nearly always involves not only a considerable period of time but the expenditure of considerable money. The experience of Climax Molybdenum Co. demonstrates the measures that sometimes are necessary in order to provide a suitable supply of water. The Climax mine and mill are on the Continental Divide! about 13 miles northeast of Leadville. The elevation of the domestic part of the camp varies from a minimum of 11,320 ft. to a maximum of approximately 11,550 ft. above sea level, and, as is common at such altitudes, the near-by streams that might be suitable for a water supply are small and intermittent, usually flowing only during the summer months. The only streams of any size in the immediate vicinity of Climax are the Ten Mile and Arkansas Rivers The headwaters of Ten Mile River are on the Company's property, and its water has been used for the domestic supply. The headwaters of the Arkansas River are about 2 miles distant and have not been used as a source of supply by the company. During the past 11 years of the production of molybdenum at Climax, the number of families living there has increased from about 45 to 283, and the population has increased from about 200 to 1200 persons. Consequently, the capacity of the water-treatment facilities, and the amount of water available, had to be increased to meet the requirements of the camp. As early as 1932 it was recognized that the water in Ten Mile River would not continue to be adequate for domestic purposes and after considerable discussion it was decided to drive a drift through the major fault in an effort to find additional water. This drift was completed in 1935 and tapped sufficient water to make the supply adequate. This water was treated in a tank underground, where lime was added, and was then piped into the domestic supply lines. At about the time this line was completed, the presence of fluorine in harmful concentrations was discovered in the water. This problem was submitted to the International Filter Co. and in November 1937 a plant of its design was put in operation for treating the water to remove the fluorine. This plant proved entirely successful,

It is possible by means of the electrolytic model to simulate water-flooding or gas recycling systems involving input and output wells, and also the encroachment of a natural water drive. The results are obtained pic-torially, and by simple measurements and calculations the percentage of recovery is obtained qualitatively as a function of the total input. Introduction The increased demand for petroleum products, together with the decline in discovery rate and the higher cost of recovery as deeper formations are brought into production, has stimulated interest in methods for studying and predicting efficiencies of various production programs. Among methods Of recovery that have become of increased significance recently are gas recycling in condensate fields and secondary recovery by water-flooding. The electrolytic model is a useful device for studying such methods in the laboratory, at least in a qualitative way. The original experiments with electrolytic models and the development of their application to the study of secondary reCoverY problems were published in 1933. 1,2,3 Subsequently other investigators continued the development and modification of the bait method, with resultant improvements and extension of its applications.4-7 The method and equipment to be described here are thought to represent still further improvement in the results obtainable, with increased validity in their application to field problems. Sand OF Principles of Operation The underlying theory of the operation of the model is given in references I, 2 and 3. However, a brief statement of principles involved is given herewith. The applicability of the model is based on the fact that Ohm's law and d'Arcy's law are exactly analogous; whence, electrical flow through a conducting medium may be used to simulate homogeneous fluid flow through a permeable medium. If two electrodes are placed in a conducting (ionized) solution and connected to the positive and negative terminals of a source of direct current, the positive ions of the solution will move toward the negative terminal, Since the velocity of an ion in an electrolytic medium is proportional to the electrical gradient, just as the velocity of a fluid particle in a porous medium is proportional to the pressure gradient, the motion of the ions in the potential field will be the same as the motion of fluid particles in a porous medium if the positive and negative terminals (input and output wells) and boundary conditions are made equivalent in shape and distribution. SEC. 1. The membership of the Institute shall comprise seven classes, namely: 1. Members; 2. Honorary Members; 3. Senior Members; 4. Associates; 5. Junior Members; 6. Rocky Mountain Members; 7. Junior Foreign Affiliates. All shall be equally entitled to the privileges of membership, excepting that no member of any class whose residence shall be outside of the United States of America, except those residing in Mexico and Canada, shall be entitled to vote. SEC. 2. Members: A person to be eligible for election or transfer into the class of Member must be at least 27 years of age and must have had at least six years' employment in the practice of engineering, mining, geology, metallurgy, or chemistry, during at least three years of which he must have held positions of responsibility in one or more of these fields. This shall not apply to Rocky Mountain Members.

The Mather mine, of the Negaunee Mine Co., is within the limits of the City of Ishpeming. on the Marquette iron range in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It is named for William G. Mather, who has served as President, and Chairman of the Board, of The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. for well over 50 years. The property comprises nearly the square mile of section 2, T.47 N. R.27 W., which, except for 20 acres in the northeast corner, was leased by The Cleve-land-cliffs Iron Co. to the Negaunee company. The latter is a partnership of Cleveland-Cliffs and the Bethlehem Steel Co., organized to equip the property, retaining Cliffs in charge as operator. Shipments of ore from this area are mainly through Marquette, which is 16 miles to the northeast on Lake Superior, or through Escanaba, a Lake Michigan port, 65 miles to the south. Cleveland-Cliffs, in 1943, operated 12 mines in the Lake Superior district, with shipments of 6,635,576 tons for the year. Geology The north footwall of the Marquette Range synclinorium outcrops near the north line of set. 2, the iron formation dipping to the south at an angle of about 40. The south side of the trough reappears at a distance of 4J5 miles on sec. 26 and the surface geology between shows iron forma- tion or intrusive diorites. The latter are harder than most phases of the iron formation and, as a result of glacial action, appear as buttes or low-lying hills. The general elevation of sec. 2 is about 1450 ft. above sea level, or 850 ft. above Lake Superior, and the higher diorite outcroppings about 1600 ft. above sea level. The geological structure has been complicated by a series of major and minor faults, one of which may be illustrated by the diorite sheet, which tilts south with the iron formation in the north half of the section and then reappears near the center to repeat this sequence. Sectionally the geological series includes a nearly eroded capping of Goodrich quartzite followed by the considerable thickness of Negaunee iron formation, which is cut by intrusive dikes or diorite sheets, and underlain by the Siamo slates grading into quartzites. The ore deposits occur mainly in troughs formed by the intersection of impervious dikes and the footwall slate, but include locally enriched lenses or bands in the iron formation and also interbedded with the Siamo slate. The ore is a soft red hematite with an indicated dried analysis from the surface drilling to date of 61.50 per cent Fe, 0.134 Per cent P, 5.40 per cent Si, 2-87 Per cent A1 and 0.015 per cent S. THE production of titanium in 15-1b. lots and with a purity sufficient to be consolidated into ductile metal, as described in a previous paper,1 has provided adequate material for a study of the : physical properties of titanium and a more thorough examination of its working qualities. Data on the physical properties reported in that paper were obtained on metal fabricated by a fixed procedure, standardized for the purpose of control of the reduction, and are representative only of material fabricated under those conditions. There are many possible variables in the working schedule, which will have significant effects on the properties of the finished material; and since the previous working methods were not necessarily the best, an investigation of the fabrication of titanium by other methods was undertaken. In this work the consolidation of the powder by pressing and sintering was conducted essentially as outlined in the report cited' and all efforts were centered on fabrication methods for those powders and the properties produced by them. Hardness, density, microstructure, and tensile properties were determined at various stages in the working and annealing; and resistivity measurements were made on a few bars and drawn wire. [ ] CONSOLIDATION OF THE POWDER The screen analysis of the available titanium powder is given in Table I. No attempt was made to alter the size distribution from that noted because this powder, although coarse by normal powder-metallurgy standards, produced acceptable compacts suitable for the present work. Because of their large specific surface, finer powders are more contaminated by oxygen and produce harder compacts, which are difficult to work. The powder as produced is soft, compresses in a normal fashion, and exhibits very little tendency to adhere to the die surfaces. The spontaneous polarization surveys dealt with in this paper were carried out near Guddadarangavvanahalli (lat. 14° 17' N.; long. 76° 24' E.) in Chitaldrug district, which forms part of the Chitaldrug schist belt. The occurrence of gold, copper, lead and antimony ores has been noticed for several years but efforts to exploit them have been unsuccessful, therefore some spontaneous polarization surveys were made in the hope of finding indications of workable ore bodies. The country examined has a rugged topography, with numerous hills on which there is little vegetation. The climate is generally dry, the average annual rainfall of the tract being about 25 in., of which 17 in. occurs during the southwest monsoon. The geological formations of the area pertain to an ancient schistose series known as the Dharwar system (Archean). Locally, the rock formations have been divided into three series1—the chloritic series (or the Chitaldrug formation), the clay series (or the G.R. formation) and the trap series (or the Jogimardi trap). The chloritic series includes a complex of altered ancient traps and volcanic agglomerates intermixed with some schists of sedimentary origin, all of which are highly metamorphosed. The lithological types of this series are mostly distinguishable as greenstone schists, calc-chloritic schists, slaty schists, ochery and calcareous mica-chlorite schists, with subordinate bands of secondary limestone. The clay series (G.R. formation) is made up of shaly and argillistic schists, litho-margic clays, sandstones and brecciated ferruginous quartzites. The Jogimardi trap is mostly of the nature of an epidiorite (hornblende diabase), which is distinctly intrusive in the form of large laccolithic and narrower dikelike masses. In addition to this trap, there are other minor intrusives such as the chalybitic trap, quartz porphyry and quartz reefs. The topographical and geological features of the area are noted on the map of Fig. I. The locations of some of the spontaneous polarization centers determined by the geophysical survey are indicated also. Method of Survey and Apparatus Employed The spontaneous polarization surveys were carried out in the manner recommended by the Imperial Geophysical Experimental Survey.2 Preliminary reconnaissance was first carried out along a series of parallel traverse lines that were laid out over the area.
