This paper supplements one appearing in Vol. 139 of the "Transactions," page 87 (1940). Because that paper will be issued soon, only a summary is given herein.

IN this critical period of our history, the coal industry of the nation, faced with many obstacles, performed its work safely during the first ten months of 1943. Thousands of the younger mine workers were inducted into the armed forces of our country and in many instances their jobs have been filled by others without much if any experience and training. This situation alone would seem to be sufficient to interfere with the safe and orderly operation of the industry but the Government's demand for a substantial increase in coal tonnage over that produced in normal times introduced a hazard which always accompanies speed, regardless of the skill of the worker.

THE meeting of the Petroleum Division at the Annual Meeting of the Institute maintained the high standard set in previous years, and attendance of member: of the Division was at a new high. The impact of the war was evident not only in the tone of many of die papers but also in the presence at the meeting of many of our members now serving in the armed forces of our-country. Ken interest was manifested in all papers presented and the discussions which followed developed many additional facts of interist and importance. The first activity of the Division was the joint meeting of the Papers and Programs and the Publications Committees on Monday afternoon; at which time definite plans were formulated for a simplification and co-ordination of the work of the committees.

NATURAL resources become a source of wealth as they are exploited and made available to the people in usable form. Experience has taught us that Nature does not readily give up her treasures, but the ingenuity of man in the field of techologic progress is required to find and efficiently exploit these resources. History has also demonstrated that with advancing technologic knowledge the. world has become progressively richer in its resources. Those that could not be commercially exploited are now being turned to beneficial use. Through expanding technology and the use of substitutes and synthetics, availability of the world's sources of natural wealth is today many times that of a hundred or a thousand years ago. And so it is with petroleum. Technology is also the great multiplier of our petroleum resources. When the origin and early plans, of Battelle Memorial Institute were described in this journal in October 1929 by R. W. Gillett the first director, the doors of the laboratory had just been opened and the hope of the founder that the institution serve the world by research for industry still existed only as an ideal in the minds of the thirty or so employees who then constituted the staff. Since that time the country has experienced troublous times. A devastating depression plunged the entire world into an unprecedented period of financial and industrial inactivity; and the slow recovery of the late thirties was soon to be overtaken and overwhelmed in the violence of war. Through this time of stress Battelle has continued to grow. The staff has increased to almost 600; buildings and equipment have been added, until now it stands in a place of pre-eminence in the metallurgical and engineering world.

GREAT advances in the preparation of ores for reduction to ferro-alloys have been made, although standard methods of reduction have been continued at most plants. Efficiencies, yields per furnace, and energy requirements per ton are generally better than previously attained. The advantages of sizing and conditioning of ore, fluxing stone, and coke have been realized. Conditioning varies from drying the furnace burden to chemical rearrangements to facilitate reduction reactions and sometimes to furnish some of the energy required for the reaction before the burden reaches the furnace. During the war period it is impossible to discuss in detail many of the advances made. They are subjects for postwar papers. However, the new procedures mentioned in the following paragraphs are indicative of the work already done and in progress.

IN 1943 the petroleum industry completed a series of practical adjustments to the acute problems which dominated the scene a year earlier. The crisis in petroleum transportation from the Gulf Coast to the East Coast was met by the completion of overland pipe lines supplementing emergency haulage by tank car so pressure on consumers along the Atlantic Seaboard was appreciably relieved. Later in the year when the western Atlantic was largely cleared of submarines, the sharp reduction in the hazards of marine transportation permitted the resumption of coastwise traffic and imports from South America. Nationwide restrictions in the use of gasoline and fuel oils became necessary as military demands for all petroleum products mounted to high levels.

FOR a number of years, the Department of Petroleum Economics of The Chase National Bank has been conducting a study of the capital employed in the petroleum industry. The technique followed is that of combining and summarizing the available financial and operating data for a group of thirty representative oil companies, doing about two thirds of the domestic business of the entire industry. This paper presents the results of the findings for the year 1943, and supplements the survey, "Sources, Disposition, and Characteristics of the Capital Employed by Thirty Oil Companies During the Nine-Year Period, 1934-1942," presented before the Petroleum Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers on Feb. 24, 1944, and also published as a pamphlet by The Chase National Bank.

PHOSPHATE ROCK is a low- priced commodity. This fact has influenced the choice of mining and beneficiating methods to a greater degree, perhaps, than in most other low-grade mining operations. The fact that many yards of everburden and matrix must be stripped and mined per ton of salable "rock" produced and sold has necessitated he development of relatively simple btneficiating plants having high capacity and low capital and operating costs. The law of diminishing returns must always be reckoned with in phosphate mining and washing, and often recovery must be sacrificed in favor of costs in order to achieve the highest over-all economic efficiency. The phosphate-bearing formation, known as "matrix," is composed of (1) phosphate pebbles, which are somewhat rounded in shape and which vary in size from 1-in, to micron sizes, (2) rounded quartz grains usually smaller than 10 mesh, and (3) clay, of varying "stiffness," which is the binder of the matrix. The phosphate pebbles vary in hardness. Their color, which varies from white to black, is not a reliable indicator of the Bone Phosphate of Lime (B.P.L.) content of the

SOMETIMES family backgrounds have a deep, if not direct, influence on a man's lifework. Dean Callen's paternal grandfather came from Wales and was a mine official in the Pennsylvania anthracite field: his maternal grandfather was a retail coal dealer. His father and uncle began their careers a. breaker boys but later completed their educational work and ended up in the professions. With that background, and with the slate region ( Pen Argyl, Pa.. July 1;. 1888) as his birthplace it is not strange that "Cope" Callen became a teacher of mining engineering. Graduating from Lehigh with an E.M. in 1909, lie taught there for two years while working for his master's degree. In 1911 he returned to teaching, going to the University of Illinois as instructor in mining engineering. In 1917, he was called to West Virginia University as head of the department of mining engineering and director of mining extension. The extension work was about dead. bus a new staff was built and the six-weeks' short course in coal mining was revamped into an attractive and efficient course which has grown in popularity with the years. Callen's work attracted the attention of the Federal Board for Vocational Education and in 1919 he was invited to serve that board as special agent for mining, taking a six-months' leave front the University.

MONTANA Phosphate Produucts Co., a subsidiary of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Canada Ltd., operates three properties near Garrison, Mont., known as the Anderson, Graveley, and Luke mines. All three are underground operations, mining the same narrow bed at points several miles apart. The Anderson, the oldest and largest of the three, has produced about 700,000 long tons since 1929. The Graveley has produced slightly over 100,000 long tons since 1940, and the Luke, acquired in 1943, is still in an early stage of development. The great bulk of the output has been shipped to the Trail, B. C., plant of Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. for use in the manufacture of fertilizers. The phosphate seam is the basal member of the Permian Phosphoria formation. In all three mines it has a uniform thickness of 3 to 4 ft. of oulitic phosphate, with a few shaly partings. The overlying part of the formation comprises about 50 ft. of chert and the immediate footwall consists of a few feet of shale and sandstone. underlain by the Quadrant quartzite.

THE war has forced the principal industrial nations of the' world into the strait jacket of a closely controlled economy; taxes have been heaped upon all enterprises in order to maintain the armed forces and to deprive the people of the ability to bid for goods now unavailable. These restrictions, controls, and taxes are unlikely to disappear entirely after the war has been won, for debts will remain to be paid with a long period of difficult readjustment. Although the new economy will doubtless offer plentiful opportunities for the advantageous use of capital, no investor can ignore the favorable conditions offered by industry in Latin America, where taxes are relatively low and the restrictions on free enterprise comparatively mild. TOO often, many foremen; superintendents, managers, and executives, "The Bosses" of the oil and mining industries, do not fully realize: (1) How much personal actions '.on the job" may reduce their effectiveness in getting work done; and, (2) The importance of harmonious relations with their fellow men. Today. these qualities of personality in the people entrusted with the positions of responsibility are more important than ever with the shortages of labor so critical in vital war production. Likewise, many engineers do not fully realize that their work is essentially executive in character; i.e., other people do the actual labor. Without their help. the engineer's work would not be done. A clearer appreciation of this fact would increase their interest: (1) in the nontechnical aspects of their work. and, (2)in their relations with others, particularly the individuals in their own organization. Consequently, these engineers would be more successful in equipping themselves for greater responsibilities and increased remuneration.

GEOLOGICAL engineering as applied to oil fields, or production geology as some prefer to designate the profession, is designed to fill in the border line between pure geology and pure petroleum engineering. Therefore the production geologist may, and frequently does, reach out to grasp much in both professions. Where once the oil geologist was content to pick samples out of a mud ditch and try to identify oil formations from the color or appearance of flakes of rock bailed out of a well, now he has to deal with graphic electrical logs obtained by intricate and highly technical electrical apparatus and to make exact determinations to the fraction of an inch of the depth and thickness of an oil sand 2 miles below the surface.

METALLURGICAL coke and the by-products of the carbonization of coal continue in strong demand. Nearly 500 new by-product ovens were constructed in 1943. Output of by-product coke in the first ten months of the year was about 2 1/2 percent higher than in the corresponding period of 1942, but beehive production remained on approximately the same level as last year and constituted about 11 per cent of the total coke output.

STRIP mining during 1943 increased considerably with further extension of mechanical loading in mines already partly mechanized; with the considerable introduction of mechanical loading into hand-loading mines; and with improvements in the use of loading equipment. Extension of the use of machinery both in strip mining and underground is due to reduction in labor supply and increased cost of labor, together with the increased demand for coal during the period of labor shortage.

ACTIVITY on long-range and on immediate wartime problems shared the attention of specialists in coal research during 1943. Programs of the principal coal laboratories were more adequately financed than in previous years, but all reported shortages of technical personnel. Expansion in coal research in the year to come will depend primarily on the availability of qualified research talent.

IN these days of the spectacular in research and technological accomplishment, it is easy and natural to overlook some of the applications to everyday life of recent developments of a more pedestrian kind, or to fail to realize that sometimes two or three of the latter may be combined to serve a novel purpose in fields other than those in which they grew. The present remarks are to point out three such developments which might be combined to apply to an everyday function of the A.I.M.E. as an organization. By its Constitution, the A.I.M.E. is organized "to promote the arts and sciences connected with . . . minerals and metals, and the welfare of those employed in these industries . . .; to hold meetings for social intercourse and the reading and discussion of professional papers, and to circulate . . . among its members the information thus obtained . . .; and to . . . maintain . . . a library." By these words of Article I the profession of mining and metallurgy is recognized to involve many arts and sciences, of which the art and science of exchanging information is a leading one. As to methods of preparing or securing papers, the Constitution is silent.

MANY changes were made in the methods and equipment used in the mining of pebble phosphate rock in the generation immediately preceding the present World War and it would be extremely interesting to note the improvements that will be made during the next generation. Literally, much water has gone over the dam since the days when we used local cordwood for generating steam and drying pebble phosphate rock. belt-driven centrifugal pumps operated by steam engines. and floating dipper or centrifugal dredges; when we removed overburden by small steam shovels and transported it by dinkey locomotives and six-yard cars; when washing machinery was installed on wooden structures the washers being replaced every four to six years. Those were the days when men were plentiful, and 47 different mining companies were selling their products, based on .decidedly meager information; and. like so many mining operations, little thought was given to conservation. As the importance of phosphate rock has become more prominent in the thoughts of our economists, a more intelligent approach has been made to mining problems.
