SILICON bronzes containing iron are used to a considerable extent in industry, under the trade name of P.M.G. alloys. Various classes of wrought alloys fall in the composition range 1.5 to 3.5 per cent silicon, and 0.5 to 2.5 per cent iron. Castings may contain as much as 6 per cent silicon and 3 per cent iron at present. The constitutional diagrams of these alloys are thus of considerable practical importance. Copper-silicon-binary alloys have been thoroughly investigated by a number of workers, the latest reports being those of C. S. Smith' and of A. G. H. Andersen .2 Although much work has been done on iron-copper alloys,3 recorded investigations on the copper-rich copper-iron binary constitutional diagram are not numerous. Tammann and Oelsen4 determined the solubility limits of iron in copper by means of magnetic measurements, and found that the solubility of iron in copper amounts to a fraction of one per cent at 400°C., increasing slowly to one per cent at 800°C. From 800°C., the solubility increases rapidly and attains 4 per cent at 1100°C. Hanson and Ford," using electrical resistivity measurements and the microscope, determined a somewhat different solubility limit. Of earlier X-ray works on the copper-iron system, very little has been published. The work by Bradley and Goldschmidt6 on copper-iron-aluminum alloys includes some information on the copper-iron binary. These investigators conclude that substitution of iron in the copper lattice decreases the spacings, which is contrary to the evidence of the present work. Hanson and West7 have investigated the ternary alloys of copper with iron and silicon. Although their diagrams are valuable contributions to the understanding of these alloys, they did not recognize the kappa phase,1,2,7,8 and their diagrams do not everywhere conform to the phase rule. The present work contains a check by means of X-rays of the solid solubility limit of iron in copper, and an X-ray investigation of the ternary-phase diagram, which, owing to present conditions, it became necessary to curtail considerably. PREPARATION OF SAMPLES Castings weighing about 75 grams were melted under vacuum. The charges were made up of ingot iron, copper cathodes from Laurel Hill, and refined silicon supplied by the Electrometallurgical Co. Alundum crucibles were generally used. The exceptions were alloys 77 and 78, which were melted in graphite crucibles. The ingots were annealed at 800°C. for one week, then samples were cut for chemical analysis. THE mineral trona was discovered on Government land in 1938, about 18 miles west of the town of Green River, Wyo., in the core of the John Hay, Jr., well, a test well drilled for oil by the Mountain Fuel Supply Co. in sec. 2, T. 18 N., R. 110 W., sixth principal meridian. Although no oil or gas was reported, the drilling led to a discovery of great potential economic importance and exceptional scientific interest. Trona is a relatively rare mineral found at various places in playa deposits but not previously found at any great depth. It is composed of hydrous sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate (Na2CO3.NaHCO3.2H20). Pure trona contains the equivalent of 70.35 per cent of sodium carbonate. Total sodium computed to carbonate times 1.42 equals the percentage of trona in the absence of other sodium carbonate minerals in the sample. ANALYSES Two short pieces of core sent to the author a few days after the completion of the Hay well were analyzed by R. C. Wells[t] and found to be exceptionally pure trona. A brief article on this discovery has already been published.1 Arrangements were then made through W. T. Nightengale[$] for the author to inspect and sample the core. The company log of the well included notations of sodium salt crystals from a depth of 1190 to 1820 ft. Not being able to identify all the minerals present, the author selected several specimens of the core for petrographic examinations and sampled the sections of trona for analysis. J. J. Fahey, of the Geological Survey, examined the specimens and reported most of the crystals to be a new anhydrous sodium carbonate and calcium carbonate mineral (Na2CO3.2CaCO3), which he named shortite,2 after Maxwell N. Short.* He analyzed the samples of trona, with the results shown in Table I. [ ] In addition to the 10 ft. I in. of trona in the first section, it is reasonable to assume that the 9 ft. 8 in. for which no core was available for sampling is either mostly trona or some other soluble salt, but it should not be included in calculating reserves. In the part of the core between 1590 ft. 3 in. and I600 ft. 4 in. the material insoluble in cold water, amounting to about 5 per cent, was estimated petrographically to contain 70 per cent clay, 25 per cent shortite, and 5 per cent pyrite. A method has been developed whereby one may calculate the productivity factors of producing formations from a knowledge of the reservoir conditions. Account is taken not only of the heterogeneous character of the gas-oil flow system but also of the detailed variations with pressure of the shrinkage and viscosity of the oil, the solubility of the gas in the oil, and even the variability of the gas viscosity and the deviation of the gas from ideal behavior. Curves are shown giving the results of numerical calculations on the production rate as a function of the pressure differential for a high-prcssure and a low-pressure system, three values of gas-oil ratio being treated in each case. Curves are also given showing the variation with distance from the well of the pressure, oil saturation, and permeability. The effect of connate water is briefly discussed in relation to the apparently large discrepancies between the calculated and observed productivity-factor values. Introduction The significance of the productivity factor as a measure of the capacity of an oil-bearing formation to produce is well recognized; for it is the composite and integrated resultant of the physical prop-crties of both the porous medium and the fluid stream passing through it with respect to the ease with which the particular petroleum fluids present in the formation can flow through it and into producing wells. The most direct method of determining the productivity factor of a well consists, as is well known, in the simultaneous measurement of reservoir-pressure differentials and rates of production and the expression of the data in terms of rate of flow per unit pressure drop.' Actual measurements carried out in this manner on producing wells have given factors that generally lie in the range of o to Ioo bbl. per day per pound pressure drop. This wide range arises not only from variations in permeability but also from the varying sand thickness of producing formations. One of the aims of developing a theory of the mechanics of oil production obviously is that of predicting what the productivity factor should be from a knowledge of the individual characteristics of the producing formation and the fluids produced. For homogeneous fluid systems passing through a porous medium into a producing well, it has been known for some time that the steady-state rate of liquid flow Q is given by the formula:* Q ? u log r?/r? where k is the sand permeability, h its thickness, µ the liquid viscosity, ?p the pressure drop between the well and the distant parts of the reservoir, in particular that at a radius re, and r? is the well radius. SOME information has been published on the sulphur dioxide concentration of gases from Dwight-Lloyd machines sintering lead ores but most of this relates to the customary practice in which the charge is relatively high in lead and is sintered in two passes over the machine. It is thought, therefore, that the following observations on sintering in one pass a low-lead, low-sulphur charge may be of interest. The data were obtained in sintering lead sulphide flotation concentrates mixed with minus 20-mesh oxide ore, the mixture carrying 16.8 per cent Pb and 5.3 per cent S. No returns were used because of the limited amount of sulphur available as fuel, but the mixture pelletized readily to make a satisfactorily permeable bed on the sintering machine. As there was a possibility that the SO2 might be utilized, a series of runs was made to determine the concentration of SO2 in the gases at different points along the wind box, and the effect on this concentration of changes in the wind-box vacuum. Several runs each were made with vacuums (as measured in inches of water at the wind box) of (1) 2 to 1 3/4 in., (2) 4 to 3 1/2 in. and (3) 6 to 5 1/8 in. The averages of the determinations from each series are platted on the graph (Fig. I). The vertical scale shows the percentage by volume of SO2 (as determined by the Reich method), and the horizontal scale shows the time expressed as percentage of the total sintering time. Sintering was considered to be complete when no SO2 could be detected in the gases. In all cases the depth of bed was 4 1/2 in. and the weight of dry charge per square foot of hearth area was 45.2 lb. Other data are given in the table. The volume of gases corresponding to the several points along the wind box at which SO2 determinations were made could not be measured, but has been calculated from the SO2 content and sulphur elimination on the assumption that the volume is uniform throughout the sintering period. This is not strictly true, as with a given vacuum the volume will usually drop slightly toward the middle of the period and increase toward the end. However, this assumption is a reasonable approximation. Several interesting features are brought out by these data. In general, the published data on SO2 concentration in sintering under ordinary conditions show a high SO2 concentration in the early stages followed by a rapid decrease in concentration and with relatively little SO2 in the gases from the last half or third of the operation. In other words, the greater part of the sulphur elimination is obtained in the first third or half of the period. In these runs, the 6-in. vacuum, which approximates the usual operating condition, gives a curve that follows this customary pattern. Maximum SO2 concentration is obtained 2 ½ min. after

There are no data available of shipments until 1858, and then estimated, when railroad service became available. By reason of the iron made in the county, and the large amounts of salt, the tonnage used locally was quite large, and until 1860 these are estimated from the probable salt and iron production. After 1859 the tonnages shipped by rail are partly estimated from the total shipments of the Allegheny Valley Railroad from four counties. It is believed that the totals are below, rather than above, what the actual production was. While considerably larger for the same years than figures given by the Secretary of Internal Affairs and census reports, these data were always too low in those days, partly because of lack of facilities for gathering them, but more largely because of the strong prejudice existing in those days against furnishing such data to any governmental agencies.

The symposium on production for the year 1941 contains few papers on the foreign situation. Rigid censorship prevails in various countries, as the question of the volume of petroleum supplies has become one of great strategic importance. This is even truer than in the last war, owing to greater mechanization of armies. It has always been the policy of officers in charge of the symposium to refrain from publishing information that might possibly injure national or private interests. At the close of the war we hope again to publish full and accurate records of production abroad. Excerpts from Circular to AutHORs In order to facilitate interpretation of the data in this chapter, we print the fol-lowing excerpts from the Circular to Authors. The field is the unit in this tabulation. In cases of fields extending across State boundaries, such as Rodessa, it is suggested that each State author treat the section of the field in his State as a unit, and by a footnote indicate that the field extends into an adjacent State. Each space in Table I may represent one of four possibilities; either it is not applicable to the particular field, or the proper entry is not determinable, or the proper entry may be determinable but is not determinable from data available to the author, or the proper entry is determinable. When spaces are not applicable, leave blank; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable but not de-terminable from data available to the author, please insert y; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable by the author, make such entries. y implies a hope that in some future year a definite figure will be available. The entry of a zero is a positive declaration, and an important declaration where it is in order. Inability to determine precisely the correct entry for a particular space should not lead the author to insert merely y. Contributions of great value may be made by the author in many cases where entries are not subject to precise determination. In such cases the author should use his good judgment and make the best entry possible under the circumstances. For many spaces the correct entries represent the opinion of the author (for example, "Area Proved") and in such cases the entry need not be hedged to such extent as when the quantities are definite yet can be ascertained only approximately by the author. In cases under definite headings but where figures are only approximate, the author may use x. It is thought that the nearest whole numbers are sufficiently accurate for our purposes except as to percentage of sulphur in oil. If an author desires to report any other figures to tenths, he may do so. The quantity of gas produced should include, where possible, gas sold or otherwise marketed, and gas blown into the air, burned as flares or otherwise wasted. Segregation of these figures would be interesting if the authors can make such segregation. In any event, the figures should represent as nearly as possible the total quantity of gas removed from the reservoir.. Sixteen steels containing different combinations of chromium and molybdenum, in amounts up to 5 per cent of each element, were examined for microstructure and hardness after air cooling and after furnace cooling from suitable austenitizing temper- atures. Diagrams summarizing the structnres and hadness resulting from these two cooling rates are presented (Figs. 3, 4, 7).t Data were also obtained on the influence of these two elements, individually and in combination, on the depth of decarburiza-tion observed after furnace cooling (Fig. 8). Composition of Material The chemical composition of the steels investigated is given in Table I. The plain carbon steel was made in a 2 5-ton Heroult electric-are furnace, while the alloy steels were made in a 4.5-ton Ajax-Northrup elec- tric induction furnace. The cast ingots were hot-rolled to 1.75-in. bars. Air-cooled Series The I.75-in. bars were forged to flat plates, 0.25 in. thick, from which specimens 0.5 in. wide by 2 in. long were cut. The specimens were pretreated to improve their homogeneity by heating to 1830°F. (I000°C.) for 20 min. and oil-quenching. They were then reheated to 1740°F. (950°C.) for one hour and air-cooled, after

I AM sure, that you understand that of all the things created by the most high God Himself or by Nature at His command, not one-even though it be an atom or the smallest worm-has been produced without some particular gift. And if we do not always discern this in every thing, the cause lies in our defective vision, in our little knowledge, and in our lack of careful thought concerning the necessity of seeking hidden things. Certainly those things that have such inner powers, like herbs, fruits, roots, animals, precious stones, metals, or other stones, can be understood only through oft-repeated experience. [37] Others do not need so much knowledge and belief for their, powers are obvious and shown to us at all times by their effects. They reveal themselves to us through the sense of sight by their splendor and variety of colors, through the sense of smell by their odors, through the sense of hearing by the melody of the harmonious or unpleasantly discordant repercussions. of the air. They likewise manifest themselves by. their softness or harshness. As you see, all those things, according to. their limits, are conveyed .by the ordinary senses to the mind, by whose distinctions all their species, both harmful and beneficial, are discerned. Then they are reviewed by the judgment in all their degrees of perfection and imperfection, so that whoever seeks them with careful study or with experience often finds them. Now, in order to shorten this discourse, since I wished to speak to you of lodestone and its properties, I tell you that it is one of those things that show their apparent effects to our sight by a particular virtue hidden in such a way that its cause, as far as I know, has never been known to the very wise natural speculators who have spoken on every other subject. Thus one who considers its actions carefully must surely marvel, for it appears that Nature has put into this stone a certain spirit of vivacity, so that it seems to have-I would like to say-hands, although they are not seen. For I see that it not only attracts iron but also takes hold of it and keeps it attached to itself. This action is certainly great enough to bear certain witness to the virtues possessed by other created things that do not manifest their powers to the external senses. AS I told you before in the treatise on ores, once these are found (whether they are ores of metals or semiminerals) it is necessary to assay them in order to know what is in them, since the judgment of the sight is not sufficient for recognizing the quantity or even what substance they contain. For this reason, it is necessary to come to assaying and, with the knowledge of experience, to weigh their virtues and to proceed with the work or withdraw from it and its expense; and also through knowledge to make provision for their defects if some evilness harms the ores. For if you should have need of a thing that would help them and should not find it, all that you have done would be lost; and, on the other hand, if you should find that the ores are abundant and rich and easy to smelt, you take courage to continue without respect for anything. Therefore, in the following book I shall tell you first in general how the assay of all the metals should be made. I shall enlarge in particular on silver more than on any of the others since it is more important. Then I shall tell you how the ores should be prepared for smelting and also how blast furnaces and other furnaces for smelting such ores should be constructed, and finally how all elemental mixtures of metals are to be separated one from the other with the ability and power of art, and how they are reduced to their final perfection and fineness according to their species.

THE increased use of heat-resistant alloys (26 per cent Cr, 12 per cent Ni; 16 per cent Cr, 35 per cent Ni; 12 per cent Cr, 60 per cent Ni; etc.) in recent years has been accompanied by continued demands by the consumer for improvement in properties. The manufacturers of these materials, of necessity, have resorted to more critical studies of the basic causes of variations in fundamental properties. To keep pace with the need for augmented information, previous techniques of investigation have been refined and new test methods and instruments created. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the apparatus, experimental technique and precision of measurement that were employed in the exploration of properties of heat-resistant alloy presented in a companion paper.? The detailed precautions in experimental procedure essential for attainment of accurate and comparable data at elevated temperatures cannot be too highly emphasized. THE CREEP TEST Since the fundamental concepts of creep testing have been recognized for the past 20 years, present interest is restricted to refinements in equipment and experimental procedure. The creep-test laboratory constructed for the American Brake Shoe and Foundry Co. is designed to permit 1000-hr. tests in the temperature range of 1200° to 2200°F. with a choice of applied stress extending from 50 to 50,000 lb. per sq. in. in increments of 50 lb. per sq. in. To simplify the calculation of weight combinations, the loading beams (Fig. I) are provided with counterweights to eliminate the tare. The precision of the knife-edges (10.1 ratio) is such that a 10-gram weight placed on the upper specimen grip will be exactly balanced by a 1-gram weight attached to the loading shackle. Check of the loading weights proved the maximum error to be 0.06 per cent. Axial alignment is provided by crossed knife-edges in the grip seats. The furnaces are similar in design to those of Crane and Company, Battelle Memorial Institute, and the U.S. Steel Corporation. An 80 per cent Pt, 20 per cent Rh No. 19 B. and S. gauge wire is used as the heating element. The details of construction are shown in the radiograph reproduced in Fig. 2. The windings are held in place on an alundum tube with alundum cement; the distribution of turns is adjusted to give a maximum temperature gradient of ± 1°F. over a 4-in. gauge length (Fig. 3). To avoid sharp temperature differentials at the ends of the test section, the length of the furnace is four times the gauge length. BaritE (BaSO4) is the most important industrial barium mineral from the standpoint of quantity consumed. In 1938 the amount was 365,000 tons. Its uses are numerous, some of the 'more important being in the production of pigments, as an inert filler in a wide variety of products, as a weighting material in oil-well drilling muds, in the manufacture of some kinds of glass, and in the production of barium chemicals. The barite studied in this investigation occurs as the massive variety in a shale replacement formation near Magnet Cove, Ark. It is intimately mixed with quartz and small amounts of iron oxide and residual shale. Complete liberation of barite and quartz is not obtained when the rock is ground to 100 per cent through 325 mesh. The crude rock with which all test work was done assayed 85.1 per cent BaSO4, II.II per cent SiO², and 2.85 per cent R²O3. Its specific gravity was 4.03. It was found in the course of the investigation that the barite contained a small amount of uniformly distributed carbonaceous material, so intimately dispersed that it could not be seen with the microscope, but gave a definite gray cast to the barite concentrates. The color of the barite in polished sections of the crude rock ranged from gray to almost black, while finely ground powder was a reddish gray. The reddish hue was due to the iron oxide present. In 1939, under the supervision of Oliver C. Ralston,* the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Milwhite Company, of Houston, Texas, undertook to study the flotation of barite from Magnet Cove, Ark. Flotation of several southern barite ores had already been investigated by the Bureau of Mines.' The Magnet Cove barite was unique, however, in that it had to be ground to such an extremely small particle size for liberation. The flotation of non-metallic minerals in the presence of a large amount of slime is usually very difficult, and when done is an innovation calling for conditions different from those under which granular material is scparated. Laboratory Flotation Work Preliminary investigation showed that the flotation reagents recommended by O'Meara and Coe1 for separating barite and siliceous material were suitable, but much larger quantities of reagents were required to separate such finely divided material. Moreover, it was found that careful control of the frothing was necessary. When oleic acid and sodium silicate were used a voluminous froth was observed at the beginning of a test, and toward the end there was not enough froth to effect complete recovery of barite. The addition of pine oil as a frother gave proper frothing for the duration of the test, and the substitution of coconut fatty acid (crude lauric acid) for oleic acid produced a more heavily burdened froth. IN the presentation which follows, washability curves, such as are commonly used in making studies preliminary to the cleaning of any coal or to the concentration of any mineral, have been reduced in each instance to a single straight line; thus all the most important characteristics of the coal or mineral are represented in a form more advantageous than that in which such data usually are shown. To obtain consistent results, float-and-sink data must be based on a single definite narrow size range, which may be designated "a coal unit." It will be shown that such units, each embodying a different size range, can be grouped to form what may be termed "a composite coal." A three-dimensional presentation will emerge, which will closely identify the coal, illustrate its characteristics in a new manner and explain many obscure facts. FLOAT-AND-SINK TESTS For the preliminary study of any cleaning or concentration problem, or in the control of any operation, float-and-sink tests must be made. The results of these tests are grouped in tabular form and then illustrated in various systems of curves; but if such a graphic representation is to have the utmost practical value, it must offer at least the following advantages: (I) It must be easier to read than the tabular results, and (2) it must be easy to plot, check and interpolate. The first requirement will be attained by reducing the number of curves to a minimum, and the second by some system of representation that will use only straight lines. Of the many washing curves now in use, only the "recovery curve," often known as the "composite curve "-a somewhat misleading term-will be considered. Any point on the recovery curve will show what percentage of weight of clean coal can be recovered when the mineral is washed at a certain specific gravity. As an example, the tests listed below Fig. I are illustrated in the drawing by a curve obtained by plotting (I) as abscissas the ash content of the coal recovered and (2) as ordinates the corresponding percentage of refuse discarded; but, in general practice, instead of writing down that weight, it is customary to set down its complement, which is the corresponding weight of coal recovered. From this curve can be deduced the information necessary for the solution of most practical problems. NEW FORM OF GRAPHIC PRESENTATION The resemblance of the recovery curve in Fig. I, or, for that matter, the recovery curve obtained in common practice, to a power curve is apparent. The general equation of such a curve is y = axn where n is negative. Taking logarithms: log y = a + n log x. Using a logarithmic scale, the equation of the recovery curve will be Y = A + bX. On this logarithmic basis, the recovery graph will be a straight line, using the same variables as in Fig. I ; namely, the ash con-

Although confident of its ability to meet any demands that may be made, the petroleum-refining industry is not complacent about the situation and realizes that the quantities of petroleum products to be furnished are so enormous and so far beyond what was previously estimated that the full cooperative effort of the industry must be exerted. Establishment by the President in May of the Office of Petroleum Coordinator for Defense with Secretary of the Interior Ickes at its head, plus the formation of the Petroleum Industry Council for Defense, in November, provide the channels for united endeavor within the industry and the means for gearing that endeavor in full harmony with the nation's needs. Great strides have been made and a rapid understanding of the situation and the magnitude of the task is being attained by all concerned. Refining, by constant study and development, by willingness to experiment and install new processes, and to replace older plants with more efficient equipment, had kept on a high plane of efficiency and progress. Working under the free competitive system, it built up its establishments until, as expressed in last year's report, it was easily able to supply any domestic demand that might be placed on it. Turning the United States into the arsenal not only of itself but of the united nations resisting aggression, however, in- creased the call for practically all petroleum products and in particular 100-octane aviation gasoline and high-viscosity aviation lubricating oils. Refining Capacity With over four million barrels a day of crude oil being charged to stills at the year's end, oil refining had broken all records and faced the necessity of further increasing its size to supply the ever-increasing demand for products, some of which, like 100-octane aviation gasoline, were research laboratory curiosities a few years ago. Although the refining capacity of the United States is listed at 4,860,000 bbl., about 800,000 bbl. of this is economically unavailable because of plant location or type. To meet the increasing needs, additional capacity of another half million barrels may have to be built in suitable locations and designed with an eye toward maximum production of aviation gasoline but with inherent flexibility to make it possible to vary and interchange with production of motor gasoline, furnace oils, and other products as necessity dictates. An interesting side light on this refining capacity question was an enquiry from official Washington for knowledge as to any idle refineries of something of the order of 10,000-bbl. daily crude capacity that might be purchased for bodily removal to Russia. 100-Octane Aviation Gasoline Largest of the tasks confronting refiners at the year's end was that of raising

The decomposition of austenite in steels, because of its immerse practical importance, has been subjected to extensive study in recent years from the point of view of the mechanism of the process.1"3 Although much information has been acquired, a number of questions, principally of theoretical interest, remain. One is that of the atomic-crystallographic mechanism by which each of the various reaction products forms. The isothermal reaction products of the eutectoid decomposition in plain carbon steels (to which this study is restricted) have conveniently been classified in three general groupings—pearlite, bainite, and martensite. Of these several products, pearlite and martensite have been studied extensively, but bainite has received only scant attention. -As a result, the mechanism of the formation of pearlite and that of martensite are now fairly well understood while a great deal of uncertainty exists regarding bainite. Pearlite Pearlite forms from austenite by the precipitation of alternate platelets of cementite and ferrite, which grow into the austenite matrix.2--5 The rate of reaction may be described in terms of a rate of nucleation and a rate of growth.2.3 Mehl and Smith6 have attempted to determine the lattice relationships existing between the ferrite in pearlite and the' parent austenite. Using a pole-figure method of analysis, it was found that a limited number of ferrite orientations resulted from the decomposition of a single grain of austenite; it was not possible, however, to decide between two assumed ideal relationships, both of which appeared to account for the experimentally determined pole figure. It was definitely shown, however, that the relationship obtaining was quite different from that determined for the proeutectoid separation of ferrite.7 No attempt was made to determine the habit plane (matrix plane to which the precipitate lies parallel) of the pearlite lamellae. Belaiew8 earlier had stated that the number of directions assumed by the pearlite lamellae in a single grain of austenite was 12 (no details were given) and concluded wrong!:!, as Mehl and Smith6 have pointed out, that the lamellae delineate the {2I0} planes of ferrite.* Martensite It is known that martensite is a transiti0nal constituent of body-centered tetragonal lattice,' and that it forms suddenly

THE formation of intermediate phase layers in cementation processes has been subjected to extensive qualitative investigation though to relatively little quantitative study; this work has recently been fully summarized by F. N. Rhines.1 It is necessary here only to enumerate the general conclusions drawn concerning the kinetic laws governing the growth of intermediate layers and to state what is known concerning the structural changes accompanying the generation of phase layers. I. When the intermediate phase is protective in type-i.e., when its density is less than that of the base metal, so that a continuous coating is formed and maintained the isothermal growth of the phase follows a simple parabolic equation: X2 = kt [I] where X is the thickness of the alloy layer, k the reaction rate constant, and t the time. The applicability of this equation to diffusion processes is tested by plotting the square of the thickness versus time, or by plotting the thickness versus the square root of time; the resultant achievement of a straight line in such. a plot has been con¬sidered sufficient proof of the validity of this equation. Exceptions have been found where liquid phases are involved in the reaction, where the diffusion layer is cracked,2 and where thin semimetallic oxide and sulphide coatings are formed on metals.3 In the first two cases the thickness increases linearly with time, and in the latter it is a logarithmic function of time. 2. The rate of thickening varies with temperature according to the Arrhenius equation k = Ae-Q/RT [2] where k is the parabolic rate constant of Eq. I, or some other rate-descriptive function, A is the action constant, e the base of natural logarithms, Q the heat of activation, R the gas constant, and T absolute temperature. This equation has been found to be generally valid except when transformations occur during reaction in either the base metal or in the reaction layer; in such instances Eq. 2 is still applicable with different values for the constants A and Q above and below the transformation temperature. 3. All phases that are stable at the temperature at which diffusion occurs will appear in the interdiffusion of two components. In some cases certain of the phases may be too thin to be observed and identified easily. Nonequilibrium phases have never been noted in thick reaction layers; i.e., layers of a thickness that may be discerned microscopically. The relative, thickness of each phase in a diffusion layer is proportional to the concentration gradient and to the rate of diffusion in that phase .4 The reaction layers tend to have a

Diatoms are microscopic aquatic plants of the order Bacillariaceae. They are unicellular plants with skelctons made up of amorphous opaline silica. The skeletons show highly ornate, complicated geometrical designs. Diatoms live in water virtually everywhere. They are found in clean sea water, brackish water, and fresh-water lakes and ponds. When conditions are right, diatoms propagate by subdivision in huge numbers. Alkalinity, temperature, and the presence of high concentrations of silica in the water largely control diatom life. When the diatoms die the skeletons drop to the bottom of their habitat to form oozes of varying thicknesses. Diatomites Diatomite, or diatomaceous earth, is composed essentially of the siliceous remains of the diatoms, although other organic skeletons are also present, especially in sea-water deposits where radiolaria, sponges and silico-flagellates are common. Impurities are generally carbonaceous material, fine-grained silt, volcanic ash and dust, and occasional coarse grains of sand. Diatomites are marine, brackish, or fresh-water, depending upon types of diatoms and their method of deposition. Diatoms More than 8000 species of diatoms have been named and classified. Some are definitely classified as to their habitat; some are so well recognized as to their living conditions that they can be stated to be diagnostic types, and when encountered in a deposit determine the origin of the deposit.
