GOLD, the most important and highly coveted valuable metal, is being sought and exploited in almost all the geological environ- ments by the developed, developing and underdeveloped coun- tries of the world. Brazil, one of the five largest countries of the world, has similar geological and lithological environments as of Africa, Australia and Canada and also produces this noble metal. With the recent gold rush in Serra Pelada Hill in Para State of Brazil and the consequent migration of a large number of enter- prises to the Amazon region in search of geological conditions similar to that of Serra Pelada, the status of Brazil in gold produc- tion has been considerably elevated to be among the first five of the world. The principal geological environments or the lithologies where gold can be explored are the greenstone belts, banded iron for- mations, quartz lodes and placers; and the tectonic controls like shear zones in these horizons, or the tectonic relics or the annular- structures that limit the quartz vein systems in felsic as well as volcanogenic systems and epithermal models. Recent major urban trunk sewer infrastructure projects in Melbourne have involved construction of nearly 10 km of tunnel boring machine (TBM) driven tunnels in a range of geological conditions varying from soft alluvial soils to hard volcanic rock. To provide both construction and permanent access to the new trunk sewer network, a total of 17 shafts between 5 m and 13 m in diameter, and up to 64 m in depth have been constructed. This paper describes the design and construction of the temporary shaft support systems for the shafts.The range and variability of geological conditions at each shaft site required the adoption of the following shaft support systems across the projects – jet grouting, sheet piles, diaphragm wall, secant pile, contiguous pile, reinforced shotcrete rings and rock bolts.Groundwater control, settlement, TBM launch and reception chambers at the shaft base, chambers and TBM launches at mid-depth of shafts, connection shafts between new and existing sewers and bypass pumping shafts are among the challenges that have been met.This paper reports on the some of the challenges involved and experience gained in developing design and construction solutions for large diameter shafts that are excavated within varying geology in Melbourne over the past three years.

An investigation on the breakage characteristics of closely sized orc samples at different levels of input energy was carried out to determine an appearance function for possible use in ball mill modelling. A consistent pattern of breakage behaviour was observed and the resultant size distributions could be described by a one-parameter, ('t'), family of curves. For each particle size range tested, this parameter 't' has an exponential relationship with input energy below an upper energy limit. A tentative linear relationship between the input energy at a constant value of 't' and the work-index leads to reconstruction of 'I' - input-energy curves from the work-index values. To normalise the efrect of particle size and input energy, multidimensional cubic spline regression was performed on thc entire range of data. The results indicated that the parameter 't' can be determined, reasonably accurately, as a function of Ln (input energy, kWh/tonne) and Ln (particle size, mm) for input energies between 0.5 and 8.0 kWh/tonne.

This paper describes the characteristics of blasting which set it apart from other methods of breaking rock. The mechanism of rock breakage and the influence of rock proper- ties are then discussed. The strain and fragmentation produced by a cylindrical charge does not change once the charge is longer than 16 blasthole diameters. The influence of bench geometry, charge length and drill diameter are then examined. It is shown that spherical charges have advantages over long slender cylindrical charges. By selection of the appropriate drill diameter, explosive and charge configuration the optimum blasting practice for a given rock to give suitable fragmentation and muckpile profile for sub- sequent handling can be found. The fragmentat- ion depends not only on rock and explosive properties but also on the pattern which dictates how effectively the cracking is utilised. The size distribution of the fragments is given by the Rosin - Rammler equation. Undesirable cracking of the rock in the final wall can be controlled by the careful design of blasts as they approach the final wall. Finally, it is concluded that because of the distance to which blasting can fracture and then displace rock it is suited for the breakage of large volumes of rock.

Traditionally, most Australian iron ore mining operations have been surface-based. Processing plants were designed to handle dry ores. In recent years mining operations in the Pilbara have progressively moved below the water table exposing wet, sticky ores which have caused lost efficiency in screening operations as particles tend to agglomerate and adhere, blinding screening media. Miners and vibrating screen manufacturers have experimented with a shift from linear motion to elliptical motion screens. Elliptical motion conveys and lifts particles. Effective on flat deck (horizontal and inclined) or sloping decks it can be configured to provide a controlled transport rate, applying pressure in all directions to maximise screening efficiency. In practice, elliptical motion screens have proven to be effective in dislodging sticky particles from screening media, reducing blinding rates and improving screen efficiency. Moisture and clay content change during the life of a mine. These changes are sometimes the effect of seasonal rainfall, in other cases due to increased groundwater and clay content as mining operations go deeper. To compensate for such changes and optimise screen efficiency, changing the ‘shape’ of elliptical screen motion is required. This has traditionally required shutting down processing plants and making mechanical screen adjustments. Plant downtime is costly and machine adjustment has been a ‘trial and error’ practice. This paper will explore the results of a field trial that is currently underway in Brazil of a next generation elliptical motion screen design that allows operators to make changes to exciter rotational direction, speed and screen stroke angle, through electronic drive phase control. The machine’s electronic drive system synchronisation is enhanced for stability with a unique mechanical timing system. Operating at up to 6 g, screen adjustments can be made on the fly without stopping production. Early trial results are showing up to 50 per cent improvement in screen efficiency compared with traditional elliptical motion machines under certain feed conditions.

IN the course of his employment the Broken Hill Co. the writer has had occasion to use and instruct others in the use of the Shamrock rescue apparatus. This paper deals with the various types of apparatus tested. The common object of the various types of breathing apparatus is to enable the wearer to remain and work for varying periods of time in an atmosphere which is either deficient in oxygen or is poisonous that is, contains carbon monoxide or irritating and irrespirable vapours, such as the smoke from underground fires, sulphur dioxide or ammonia fumes. For any apparatus to be efficient as required in the above paragraph it must fulfil the following conditions;1. Air-tight as regards the passage of the air from the outside to the inside. In atmosphere containing carbon dioxide a slight leak would not render the apparatus useless; but where irritating vapours, such as the smoke from burning oregon and sulphides, are met with, even the slightest leak must be avoided.2. The oxygen supply must be ample, and so supplied that it is not checked by expiration.3. Expiration and inspiration must not be retarded.

The Mount Kasi gold deposit in Vanua Levu represents an epithermal, high sulphur, gold-enargite system occurring within a volcanic caldera of Middle to Upper Miocene age. High level breccia pipes flare upward and form flat lying, near surface, mushroom shaped sheets parallel and near to the present land surface. The upper portions of the pipes contain explosion breccias which are capped by sandy siliceous sinter-like beds and are cut by alunite veins. Outlying intercalated scoriasceous lavas and breccia sheets show evidence of subsidence within a shallow basin. Detailed mapping of breccia types, intensity of silicification and the presence of multiple quartz veining and enargite abundance outlined blocks of more consistent gold mineralization within the breccias. This work has provided a model for mineralization which will aid future exploration and ore reserve estimations. A significant eluvial concentration of gold occurs in soils overlying the breccia sheet.

The Plumduff sinter occurs at Whenuaroa, near Puhipuhi, approximately 30 km north of Whangarei. It is one of three residual sinters in the southern portion of a mid- to late-Pliocene geothermal system. The deposit consists of many large sinter breccia boulders, including rudrocks (coarse breccias), scattered around the flanks and summit of the small conical hill of Plumduff. Three types of sinter breccia occur: (i) rudrocks consisting of large, angular to sub-angular clasts of layered sinter up to 0.8 m across, as well as smaller clasts of sinter (20 - 100 mm dia), and fragments of stromatolitic structures; all clasts are supported in a matrix of microcrystalline, transparent to translucent to milky quartz; (ii) fragments of layered angular to irregularly mottled sinter of white to grey or bluish hue supported in a translucent to opaque silica matrix; (iii) smaller, matrix-supported breccias with clasts both partially surrounded and/or penetrated, by a clay-like weathering rind, and sinter conglomerates with rounded to oblate clasts. Three principal types of fabrics constitute the bulk of the sinter: (i) stromatolites, including columnar, palisade and filamentous networks, showing progressive silicification, in fenestral, tufted to clotted fabrics; (ii) peloids and pisoids; (iii) plant-rich facies in which various silicified plant species occur in a silica matrix. All fabrics have counterparts in hot spring deposits in the Taupo Volcanic Zone formed at temperatures from 75¦C to 35¦C. Also present is steam-condensate-produced alteration: kaolinite and alunite as well as boulders of quartz lattice texture. Cinnabar only occurs in sinter on the north and south central slopes of the hillside. No quartz veins or geyserite were recognised.

The Kidston breccia pipe is situated approximately 280 km west northwest of Townsville, north Queensland. It is currently Australia's largest gold producer with production varying between 8,000 and 16,000 tonnes of ore per day. Current reserves are estimated at 36.2 million tonnes averaging 1.74 C/t Au and 2.21 g/t Ag. Alluvial gold in the gullies surrounding the deposit was first discovered in the 1880's and between 1907 and 1948 small scale open cut and underground mining was undertaken. Advances in extractive metallurgy and an increase in the gold price were major factors influencing the recent exploration and development of large scale mining of the deposit by Placer Pacific and Kidston Gold Mines. The breccia pipe is trapezoid in shape with surface dimensions of 1100 m by 900 m. Clasts show only limited evidence of mixing during brecciation, with the pre-breccia stratigraphy still discernible on the basis of clast types. This lack of mixing together with the intimate association with intrusive activity, suggests that the brecia formed by collapse, probably associated with the escape of a large volume of irothermal fluid from a crystallising hatholith. Mineralisation and alteration are also sratially and temporally associated with rhyolite emplacement and brecciation. Pre-breccia mineralisation consists of laminated stockwork quartz veins associated with muscovite, quartz and orthoclase-epidote alteration. Stockwork veins contain either anomalous molybdenite or gold. Uneconomic early stage post-breccia mineralisation and alteration consists of cavity infill quartz-epidote and calcite associated with potassic and propylitic alteration respectively. Economic late stage post-breccia cavity infill and sheeted veining consists of quartz-carbonate-sulphide infill associated with phyllic alteration. The grade of gold mineralisation generally decreases downwards in the system with an increase in the amount of pyrrhotite relative to pyrite. The equipment and general smelter layout for the Mount Isa Copper Smelter were designed by engineers associated with the American Smelting and Refining Company and by Mount Isa staff engineers. The final notice of site was dictated by the need for 'building the smelter near the existing Mount Isa power house to enable full use to be made of the steam from the waste heat boilers. Although much excavation work was necessary before concrete foundations could be poured, the location lends itself to further expansion should it become necessary. The plant is designed and constructed to involve straight line smelting operations which include the following major steps in the overall scheme.1. Charge make-up.2. Roasthig.3. Reverberatory smelting.4. Converting.5. Refining.6. Casting.CHARGE MAKE-UPA system of proportioning bins is provided for preparing the feed mixture for the roasters, Sulphide concentrate containing 24% copper wiil be delivered by belt conveyor from the filter plant to the smelter storage patio. This is a large roofed concrete floor that provides a maximum storage capacity of 8,000 tons of concentrate. Eight proportioning bins located below but adjacent to the south end of the patio will be used for actual charge make-up from which concentrate, ore and flux will be proportioned to the feed belt and conveyed to the roaster feed hoppers. The BHP Billiton Cannington mine uses sequential flotation to treat a silver, lead and zinc ore supplied from an underground mine. The final products from the process plant are a silver rich lead concentrate and a zinc concentrate. Operational history of plant performance highlighted that the majority of valuable metal losses to final tailing occurred in the -5 ¦m fraction. Research completed on the flotation characteristics of this size fraction in plant feed resulted in the development of a split flotation process to improve the silver and lead mineral recoveries. Construction of a $A 9.5 million brownfield project to install the new split flotation circuit at Cannington was completed in July 2002. The circuit consists of three stages of cyclone classification to recover the ultra fine material to a final cyclone overflow stream, conditioning of this pulp to achieve optimal process conditions, and conventional rougher and three stage cleaner flotation to produce a silver rich lead concentrate. The rougher tail from the new circuit is recombined with the cyclone underflow streams and processed through the original lead-zinc flotation circuit. This paper discusses the circuit design, material properties, material selection for components of the circuit, operational practices and requirements to ensure the circuit succeeded in meeting production targets. Croesus Shaft is one of two operating shafts on North Kalgurli Mines Limited's Fimiston lease.At the cessation of gold mining in 1974, the workings at Croesus were allowed to flood. Large quantities of deslimed mill tailings used in filled stopes were washed into the shaft and surrounding drives, making re-access very difficult. The shaft has been desludged from the 9 level to the 15 level, and a loading pocket installed below the 14 level. A vacuum lift unit was installed underground to facilitate the removal of the slime and spillage.Stoping at Croesus was hampered by poor drainage, pumping, and shaft availability. These difficulties have been overcome by utilising an open stoping system for the relatively steep, narrow, high grade stopes. Open stoping has proved to be effective and economic.

The Thiess John Holland Group is undertaking the design and construction of Brisbane’s Airport Link Project, the largest single investment in transportation infrastructure in Australian history. Twin Herrenknecht TBMs are being used to bore parallel road tunnels from Kalinga Part in Toombul through to Lutwyche, a distance of 2.45 km. At 12.48 m, these tunnel boring machines (TBM) are the largest diameter machines, outside of Japan, to incorporate annular two-component type grouting through the tailskins.Grout design, preparation and injection have been given particular attention in this project in order to push the boundaries of achievement. Laboratory testing was conducted on various mix designs to ensure the contract specifi cations for grout strength could be met. To study the mechanics of the grout injection process, Herrenknecht supplied a test rig which duplicates the grout injection systems on the TBMs. Multiple recipes were tested, carefully selected to balance the requirements of rapid strength development with high mobility (to completely fill the void between the segmental lining and the ground) and minimal bleed.Team Mixing Technologies, Canada, was selected as the grout plant provider based on the technical performance of their high shear colloidal mill mixers. Field results have shown that the colloidal mixer prepared grout gives almost double the strength of an identical grout prepared by a paddle mixer.

The Brisbane Airport Link Project (AirportlinkM7) includes the design and construction of more than 12.5 km of tunnels, with the Kedron interchange including four ramp tunnels that intersect with mainline tunnels and result in caverns with spans of up to 26 m. These caverns are in highly variable ground conditions with less than 35 m of cover underlying residential neighbourhoods and commercial properties. The Kedron caverns were constructed using the sequential excavation method (SEM). Owing to complex geometry and excavation sequence, the caverns were designed based on numerical modelling methods, including both two- and three-dimensional models. These numerical methods were used to develop a suite of support types with excavation sequences for the expected range of ground conditions. A combination of methods that included in-tunnel monitoring (convergence monitoring and extensometers), probe holes, endoscope probes, face mapping and ground settlement measurements were used to verify performance of the tunnel support systems and to select and refine the appropriate support system for each section of the caverns. The construction monitoring data indicated that numerical modelling can provide a good basis for predicting the performance of large-span underground openings in highly variable ground conditions. The progress between 1983 and 1989 towards Management Guidelines for R16 was extremely slow and painful because protection of the mining heritage was a new function and administrative activity not referred to in any Queensland mining law. Also, until 2 December 1989 the Queensland political climate was anti-preservation. Therefore an understanding had to be achieved between John Hay, the Mines Department and the National Parks and Wildlife Service, to ensure preservation of the mining machinery in situ rather than being removed to a town site such as in Ravenswood.

There are two main challenges in analysis of spectral data: to output as accurate an interpretation of the sample mineral assemblage as possible and to then use the spectral data to map out trends (downhole, across section or traverse) that will assist the exploration geologist to target drilling and further exploration. This paper will discuss methods of extracting the maximum amount of information from spectral data and examples of plotting the information downhole, in section and plan view to assist in exploration and mining. In common with several great orebodies and mineral camps around the world Broken Hill has been the subject of state-of-the-art technical and scientific scrutiny during its long working life. During the early years geological interest in Broken Hill tended to be directed at the body for its intrinsic scientific worth, mainly on account of its large size, high grade and wealth of mineral species. For much of the last 60 years the interest has had a more applied motivation, namely, to assist the search for either repetitions in the Broken Hill field or analogues in other terrains. This paper looks at the major changes in geological concepts and exploration techniques applied at Broken Hill and attempts to assess their impact.

A review is given of the development of the author's ideas on the relationship of ore occurrence to regional dislocations in the earth's crust, presently identifiable in particular areas as linear discontinuities in patterns of geological and geophysical data. Ideas originating from field observations in Broken Hill were developed in conjunction with three-dimensional kinematic deformation models which were devised to simulate rock structures, and to illustrate their response to assumed linear and planar movements at the scale of mine and regional geology. These led to the study of linear features in the pattern of Broken Hill district geology, and to the observation that the Broken Hill lode occupies a "cross-roads" position at the intersection of regional geological lineaments where they cross through and deflect the host rocks. A genetic association was therefore proposed. The recognition of significant regional lineaments requires special techniques and treatments of field data originally developed for the Broken Hill situation. The subsequent application of the work to the Western Australian shield revealed that known major nickel and gold deposits also occur where the host rocks are crossed by one or more regional lineaments. These lineaments were recognised as part of a continental tectonic pattern of major linear trends with which major ore deposits are associated. The ideas were later used in exploration leading to the discovery of the Olympic Dam deposit at Roxby Downs, South Australia, which is related to regional lineaments.
