During the commissioning phase of Prominent Hill, periods of reduced recovery were experienced with higher-grade ore blends. This was unexpected and as part of the process to identify the cause, surveys were conducted in May 2009, with two different ore blends (copper grades: 1.94 per cent Cu (blend 1) and 2.49 per cent Cu (blend 2)). Metallurgical performance was assessed in terms of rougher recovery and grade with consideration of both pulp and froth effects. In addition, hydrodynamic measurements (gas hold up, bubble size, superficial gas velocity) as well as measurements of bubble load and top-of-froth grade were taken during the surveys and full mineralogical assessment of selected streams completed to characterise the nature of the differences. The metallurgical results showed that the lower performance was obtained with blend 2 which contained the higher amount of chalcocite and was higher-grade. Analysis of the survey data showed that for both ore blends more than half of the copper loss occurred in the +38 ¦m size fractions. Almost 30 per cent of the copper in the +38 ¦m fractions that reported to the rougher tails during processing of blend 2 was liberated compared to less than five per cent for blend 1. Additionally almost 60 per cent of the copper in the +38 ¦m fraction of blend 2 was chalcocite compared with approximately 20 per cent in blend 1. This paper discusses the sensitivity of the chalcocite-to-surface chemistry effects causing marked reductions in recovery either through reduced pulp recovery or froth phase (detachment) effects. The reagent suite and operating conditions were subsequently changed and the recoveries increased substantially and the sensitivity to ore changes eliminated. The presence of reactive metal sulfide minerals in waste rock contributes to the hazard of spontaneous combustion in dumps, as these minerals react with air and water entering the dump at ambient temperatures to form various mineral products and significant heat. This reaction series can also be an initiator of self-heating of carbonaceous material present in the waste rocks if sufficiently high temperatures are reached. Characterisation of these reactive minerals has primarily been to assess the risk of acid mine drainage, which is not necessarily an indicator of spontaneous combustion risk. No systematic testing procedure has been adopted by industry to assess the spontaneous combustion propensity of the waste rock. As a consequence, the principal management strategy for spontaneous combustion has been a reactive approach of dealing with events as they arise.Recent advances in adiabatic oven-testing have enabled more definitive assessment of the spontaneous combustion propensity of coals, including the quantification of the accelerating influence of reactive pyrite (Beamish and Beamish, 2011, 2012; Beamish, Lin and Beamish, 2012). This same test procedure has been used to assess the self-heating performance of metal concentrates and is therefore amenable to assessing the metal sulfide oxidation process from low ambient temperatures. The data obtained from such testing can be used to quantify the more prone waste rock sequences of a mineral deposit in advance of mining. Highwall failures in surface coal mines in Queensland occur as circular slips through weak and weathered material, or as bilinear slides on sub-horizontal surfaces and steeply dipping joints. Weak horizontal planes occur in the Permian-Tertiary unconformity or on bedding surfaces within the Permian Coal Measures. Sub-vertical movements occur along rock joints and tension cracks induced by stress relaxation after excavation. Blasting also introduces new fractures and causes movement along existing rock discontinuities. Critical factors for stability include the dip direction of potential failure surfaces, shear strength of the rocks, damage due to blasting prior to highwall excavation, groundwater conditions, the type and performance of clays on shear surfaces, and pit geometry.

Due to ongoing demand and increasing depletion of high-grade iron ore resources from large deposits, Australian iron ore producers are developing smaller size deposits to maintain current export levels. The iron grade, mineralogy, chemical and physical characteristics of iron ore fines being mined from different deposits vary considerably. It is therefore imperative to develop long-term strategies to maintain the quality and consistency of iron ore fines while moving to a larger diversity of smaller deposits. Blending is a common practice in sinter plants as it is almost impossible to produce a high performance sinter mixture displaying the required characteristics from one single ore. Blending is also one of the most effective options being used by iron ore producers to ensure the long-term stability of their products while increasing production. When designing a blend, the blend components are selected to support each other to achieve the required overall balanced metallurgical performance of the final product at a relatively low cost. To do so, a fundamental understanding of the key characteristics of iron ore fines and their potential impacts on the iron ore sintering process and sinter quality are required. In this paper, the sintering process and sinter structure have been analysed and the key factors affecting the sintering performance of iron ore fines, including productivity and quality, identified. Under fixed sintering conditions, the granulation efficiency, nuclei stability and the volume and properties of the primary sinter melt are believed to have important impacts on both sintering productivity and sinter quality. Discussion is then focused on the effects of ore chemical, physical and mineralogical characteristics on the key factors identified and in turn the consequences for sintering productivity and sinter quality.

The Miocene Chichibu granitoids associated with the Chichibu skarn deposit are divided into North Body, South Body and Daikoku altered stock. Orebodies of the Chichibu skarn deposit are mainly distributed in the north-western part of the North Body and Daikoku altered stock. The North Body consists of magnetite-series granitoids ranging from tonalite to granodiorite and to monzogranite from the margins to the centre of the intrusion. The South Body consists of tonalite and granodiorite, and most of these rocks are also classified as magnetite-series granitoids. The Daikoku altered stock consists of a quartz diorite porphyry. The SiO2 contents of the granitic rocks of the North Body and South Body range from 61.6 to 70.7 wt per cent. During magmatic differentiation, Cu, As and Zn contents in fresh granitic rocks of the North Body and South Body increase with SiO2 content up to 63 wt per cent SiO2, and then progressively decrease with increasing SiO2 contents as SiO2 exceeds 65 wt per cent. Estimated pressure for the emplacement of the granitoids is about 0.5 kbars. Cathodoluminescence studies on quartz from those granitic rocks show that vapour rich two-phase fluid inclusions tend to occur in the core of quartz crystals, while halite-bearing poly-phase fluid inclusions occur in the margins of quartz crystals. The distribution of fluid inclusions suggests that fluid composition changed from low to high salinities during the growth of magmatic quartz crystals. Texture showing quartz crystals with an oval shape enclosed by radial aggregates of a mixture of fine-grained quartz, plagioclase and K-feldspar composing the groundmass of the monzogranite also suggests a pressure decrease during solidification of North Body. These findings show that high salinity fluids were present during magmatic differentiation and that Fe-Cu-Pb-Zn-Au-Ag skarn mineralisation of the Chichibu deposit was possibly associated with these high salinity fluids. The Morning Star mine is one of numerous historically mined gold-quartz lodes in the Preservation Inlet goldfield of southwest Fiordland. The mine is hosted in Early Ordovician metasedimentary rocks that are composed predominantly of psammitic and pelitic lithologies. These rocks still contain their primary depositional features and are characterised by upper greenschist facies metamorphic grade.   The Morning Star mine lies on the eastern limb of a gently south plunging anticline. A bedding parallel fault-vein and an associated network of minor quartz veins hosts mineralisation. The main fault-vein structure strikes N-NW, dips steeply (~60¦) W, has a strike length of ~350 m, a vertical extent of ~170 m and is up to 2 m in thickness. The internal structure of the fault-vein consists of laminated quartz, massive and fibrous quartz, and silicified breccias/cataclasites. Gold is typically coarse grained (~1 - 2 mm) and associated with pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite and galena. The geometry of the Morning Star mine is similar in form to that of a saddle reef. Gold-quartz lodes in the Preservation Inlet goldfield are comparable in geometry and host rock to their offset equivalents in the Golden Blocks field of NW Nelson.

Magmatic-related low sulfidation hydrothermal ore systems at plate margins exhibit distinct spatial and temporal zonations which can be used to aid mineral exploration and development. Low sulphidation systems at all crustal levels exhibit the same paragenetic sequence of events: early breccia formation, followed by quartz - secondary feldspar sericite/illite veining, then mineralisation, and final argillic overprint. This sequence of events is interpreted to reflect the initial emplacement of melts at high crustal levels, and the progressive cooling of that melt and release of magmatic constituents into a circulating hydrothermal system.   Low sulphidation systems in the south-west Pacific region exhibit a vertical zonation in deposit types: from porphyry copper-gold at deep levels, quartz-sulfide-gold at mesothermal to deep epithermal levels, carbonate-base metal gold at mainly epithermal levels, and epithermal quartz silver-gold at shallow levels. It is interpreted that the characteristics of each of these styles of deposits is produced by mixing with circulating waters of different physio-chemical compositions.

The laws of detonation wave velocity variation in propagation process along the charge under channel influence are investigated widely in this paper. The result is obtained by blasting experiments. Bore hole is simulated by plastic tube or steel pipe (with outer diameter 45 nun, inner diameter 40 or 41 mm). Blasting experiment is carried out with a cylindrical charge of 32 mm diameter. The author analyses the characteristics of energy distribution along the charge under above-mentioned conditions. Reasonable initiating position and initiating direction are also analysed. A double-direction initiating method which consists of several initiating charges is put forward. The blasting effect of this initiating method when used in underground mining is stated out.

The presence of unfavourable geological structures such as faults and dykes often can contribute to coal burst risk. Seismic events associated with rock fractures tend to cluster around these structures and it is important to understand the characteristics of seismicity for coal burst risk management. In an Australian underground longwall coalmine, two clusters of seismic activities close to the longwall face and within a section of the maingate roadway which was intersected by a major dyke were respectively identified. The induced seismicity in the dyke-roadway area was closely related to the longwall mining. These seismic events were located and the distribution of seismic events shows that more fractures were distributed on the inbye side of the dyke. The spatial-temporal changes of the seismic event locations delineate the fracture propagation as the longwall mined through the dyke. The frequency-magnitude relationship of seismicity was analysed and it was found that it changed significantly when the longwall was mining towards, through and past the dyke. The monitoring results demonstrate that because of the stiff dyke, the seismicity was intensified in the roadway section. It proves that the dyke promoted stress re-distribution and seismicity in its vicinity. More fractures were induced in the hanging wall of the dyke, whereas less strain energy was accumulated and released in the footwall of the dyke.

Copper and gold mineralisation at Batu Hijau is directly related to quartz veining and wall rock alteration that developed in close spatial and temporal association with multiple tonalite porphyry intrusions. To its advantage with respect to the study and better understanding of the evolution of the porphyry system, Batu Hijau has comparatively minor late alteration and mineralisation overprints. This paper summarises results of detailed geological logging, petrographic studies and geochemical analyses of diamond drill cores from the deeper sections of the Batu Hijau porphyry system (ie its roots). The Tolukuma gold-silver prospect is located approximately 100km N of Port Moresby in the Central Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Epithermal "adularia-sericite" style mineralisation crops out over 1200m within an en echelon quartz veined zone 1 to lOm wide. At a 4g/t cut-off grade, a geological resource of approximately 1.47Mt @ 13.77g/t Au is indicated from 38 diamond drill holes completed since discovery by Newmont Pty Ltd in September 1986. At a regional scale, Tolukuma miner- alisation appears localised in a dilatant zone at the intersection of a 1150 magnetic structure, and the western margin of a N-S trending graben which is filled by a Pliocene volcanic complex contemporaneous with the Mt Davidson Volcanics 30km to the W. A l0km diameter circular Landsat feature, which may reflect magma emplacement at depth, occurs immediately N of Tolukuma and nearby mineralisation. Mineralisation at Tolukuma occurs in sub-vertical quartz veins at, or adjacent to the faulted contact between Pliocene basic and intermediate volcanics/intrusives, and quartz mica schists and phyllites of the Cretaceous Kagi Metamorphics. Most veins display evidence of multiple episodes of brecciation and textures indicative of cyclic boiling, including crustiform rhythmic banding and quartz pseudomorphs after platy calcite.

Recent mapping at the Kelian epithermal gold deposit in East Kalimantan, Indonesia has delineated intrusive and extrusive-phreatomagmatic breccias, their magmatic roots, and late-stage endogenous domes of a maar-diatreme complex. The Kelian epithermal system is characterised by a wide variety of mineralised and unmineralised breccias, which include tectonic, hydrothermal, phreatic and phreatomagmatic varieties. Phreatomagmatic breccias and associated igneous rocks post-date early stage alteration and mineralisation, and pre-date main stage precious and base-metal mineralisation. This study emphasises the spatial, temporal and genetic links that have been drawn between diatremes and both epithermal and porphyry systems in volcano-plutonic arcs.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines installed surface and subsurface instruments at a mine site in Colorado to monitor and characterize the overburden response to longwall mining. Instrumentation included a time-domain reflectometry (TDR) cable, a multiple-point borehole extensometer (MPBX), vertical- deformation surface monuments, and in-mine pressure cells for monitoring abutment, pillar, and gob loads with respect to the longwall face position. The purpose of the study was to collect data that could be analyzed to correlate the design of the mine layout to the resulting overburden failure response. Determining the extent of caving and fracturing is important in the and and semiarid Western United States because of the possible consequences to the fragile underground hydrologic systems upon which the land owners and users depend. This study is unique from past investigations because the overburden contains massive sandstone members that impose special conditions on the caving process and pressure redistribution above the longwall panels. This paper presents the results of this correlation study.

A prototype version of a computer controll- ed on-line scanning electron microscope image analyser, employing the real-time signals ob tamed by digital control of the electron beam has been used to obtain statistical quantificat lion of a wide range of mineral grain character istics, including composition, size distribut- ion, and degree of liberation. These propert lies have been determined for suites of whole particles of flotation concentrates, mounted without further preparation. The facility is also well adapted to the measurement of general Istereological parameters. Multiple operating points for mine fans are a problem that fan and mining engineers must constantly be aware of in mine/fan systems. In a single-fan system, unstable conditions can be avoided by restricting fan operation to the "normal operating range." When mine fans are operated in parallel, the situation becomes a little more complicated. Multiple operating points are more often encountered and the fan user must be aware of these multiple points to have a suitable set of operating conditions. However, for fans in parallel, the engineer can plot the combined characteristic in a relatively straightforward manner and thus can avoid conditions that would cause instability in the mine/fan system.

Efficient performance of pulp lifters to discharge ground rock is critical to the effective performance of SAG and AG mills. The paper covers developments in the design of pulp lifters and associated grates, of both conventional straight-radial and curved types, and of the inner discharge cone. Issues covered include the discharge performance of both the slurry and rock components of the discharge, reverse flow back into the mill through open grates and backflow down the pulp lifters of material that fails to discharge from the mill. The design experience is interpreted in the light of developments in particle flow modelling of the flow of charge in pulp lifters.

A column (50 cm 4) provided with a bell charging mechanism and a rectangular perspex insert was used to investigate the inter-relationship between charging pattern, size analysis and velocity profile for a number of charging methods. It is shown that a strong correspondence exists between size distribution and velocity profile for bell charged ore and coke and that decreased coke volumes cause higher pressure drops and increased central flow in beds with "V" shaped layers. It is also shown that a bell charged mixed burden exhibits greater segregation than when it is bell charged as layers and that when uniformly charged the mixed burden shows least segregation and a virtually flat velocity profile. A relationship is derived for "V" profile charges showing the extent of central segregation with furnace size.

The election of Donald Trump and the Brexit referendum herald a shift towards a tighter definition of economic value, at the expense of the broader value concept of sustainable development; as well as a rise of protectionism, reversing a long-term trend of globalisation. However, the situation is complex, especially over the longer term in which mine project development and exploration operates. The minerals sector should proceed with caution. A greater focus on the local impacts of mining may be strategically beneficial, not only to mitigate against a potential protectionist future, but also because sustainable development has become more ‘localist’ via the concept of ‘social licence to operate’, whilst globalisation also seems to provoke increased ‘localist’ sentiments (known as ‘glocalism’). Localist strategies, therefore, seem a good hedge against multiple political futures. By contrast, moving away from sustainable development appears strategically riskier. Not only are ‘unsustainable’ activities, such as pollution and civil rights infringements harder to reverse, but a movement towards a more sustainable global economy may already be predetermined, even if the journey there may seem oblique.
