Andean countries (Chile, Peru, Bolivia and Argentina) have 42 semi-autogenous mills (SAG) in operation and there are more than 30 projects in the pipeline that consider SAG mills. At the end of the next decade, the total amount of SAG mills in this area will likely be close to 100.There is a lot of reliable operational information collected by JRI Ingenieria Sociedad Anonima, the author’s engineering company, for more than 20 years and processed by statistical software, to be used as a reference for design basis of future projects or to improve operations by comparison. JRI Ingenieria Sociedad Anonima has reliable information related to the performance of more than 50 per cent of the Andean SAG plants.The paper presented considers a set of graphs that summarise the collected and verified SAG plants technical data. The figures will show key parameters as circuits and equipment data, energy consumption, technical availability, utilisation rates, throughput variability, pebble productions, steel consumption and others.The data is compared with typical design basis of several engineering companies and the main differences are analysed and/or commented on.CITATION:Rayo, J, 2014. The study focuses on sulfide oxidation processes in unweathered pyrite-rich mine tailings from a soil-covered impoundment in northern Sweden. To simulate the oxygen-limited conditions in water saturated tailings two long-term column experiments were performed. Results are presented for the first 11 months of the experiments at room temperature. The tailings used in the experiments were of two different grain sizes (one coarse grained, in the range 0.02 - 0.6 mm with a grain surface area of 1.86 m2 g-1, and one fine-grained, in the range 0.0015 - 0.06 mm with a grain surface area of 10.00 m2 g-1) and with slightly different mineralogical composition. The S:Fe molar ratio in the leachates (1.0 - 1.5) indicates either that pyrrhotite is the main iron sulfide undergoing oxidation in our experiments, or, alternatively that the S:Fe molar ratio in the leachate is determined by pyrite weathering in conjunction with other processes releasing iron or immobilising sulfate. However, speciation modelling of the leachates indicates that ferrihydrite was close to saturation, suggesting that a ferric oxyhydroxide may have dissolved/ precipitated during the experimental period, thereby affecting the S:Fe molar ratio. Pyrite oxidation rates obtained from the two column experiments during æsteady-stateÆ were 2.25 + 10-13 and 8.45 + 10-14 mol m-2 s-1 in the coarse and fine tailings, respectively. Pyrrhotite oxidation rates, as an alternative, were 2.31 + 10-12 and 1.24 + 10-11 mol m-2 s-1 in the coarse and fine tailings, respectively. Natural microbial activity was confirmed in both the tailings and the leachates; therefore, the obtained oxidation rates are not strictly abiotic. It is thus concluded, based on the experimental results, that tailing heterogeneity will result in zones with different oxidation rates, related to their physical and chemical properties.

Supergene lateritic iron ores are uncommon when compared with the vast tonnages of BIF-hosted microplaty haematite ores of the world or with the dominant supergene mimetic martite-goethite ores of the Hamersleys. In Australia and to a lesser extent in India and South America, mimetic replacement of gangue minerals by iron hydroxyoxides is a major factor in forming supergene iron ore from banded iron-formation (BIF) and results in the superb preservation of all of the original BIF features. This includes primary banding down to the finest inclusions, as a result of pseudomorphing of the BIF gangue at depth by goethite. The enrichment as a whole is an absolute accumulation of Fe at depth, dissolved from the surface BIF, and a removal of the gangue elements without loss of the original BIF mineral textures. Thus the ores grow upward to meet the downward destruction of the surface BIF by erosion. By contrast the supergene lateritic ores including the 'blue dust ores' are residual ores resulting from the relative accumulation of Fe. In the supergene lateritic ores derived from BIF, removal of the gangue is accompanied by repetitive solution and reprecipitation by secondary haematite and goethite. The final product of lateritisation of BIF and BIF-derived ores is typically complex, due to successive overprinting of earlier stages of alteration during the process, and because of the different precursors. This progressive lateritic modification tends to produce a varied surface complex including massive, vermiform, and botryoidal, or nodular aluminous/siliceous goethite and haematite, variously known as ferricrete, duricrust, canga, or 'hydrated zone hardcap'. The significant difference in these ores to the supergene mimetic martite-goethite ores is that they grow downward, with the total destruction of any of the parent BIF or BIF-ore textures.

With the introduction of diesel powered loading and hauling equipment, a number of Australian mines producing less than one million tonnes per year from shallow orebodies have been dev- eloped by decline. This method of entry has the advantage of providing both flexible access and early prod uction. However, as the depth of mining increases so does the operating cost of haulage, due to the need for more trucks. This cost, together with increased capital requirements for both equipment and infrastructure, leads to the point where the alternat- ive of shaft hoisting must be con- sidered. With an established decline it is possible to provide an ore hoisting shaft using a drilled raise with subsequent stripping to a suitable size. Using DCF techniques and known equipment operating and capital costs, an economic comparison of the two systems is made to determine the limit- ing depth to which truck haulage can be used.

The safety and stability of construction structures are often affected by blast-induced waves. Investigating the generation mechanism of shear wave (S-wave) during blasting is important, because it has a strong effect in blasting damage. In this paper the generation mechanism and verification of S-wave was studied analytically and numerically. Under the finite velocity of detonation (VOD) of cylindrical charge or the compression wave (P-wave) communicating with the interface of different media during the propagation, the generation mechanism of S-wave was analysed. Propagation of blasting wave in cylindrical charge was simulated with the elastic model, and the generation of S-wave induced by finite VOD was proved. To compare with different numerical methods in simulating the generation of S-wave, the blasting process of instantaneous detonation was simulated by using the elastic model, elastic-plastic model and smoothed particle hydrodynamics and finite element method (SPH-FEM) coupled model. Results demonstrate that the S-wave could not be found in middle section of the charge if the elastic model is employed. But when using elastic-plastic model and SPH-FEM coupled model, the generation of S-wave could be verified. Under the SPH-FEM condition, the amplitude of S-wave is larger and the arrival time difference between P-wave and S-wave is closer to theoretical results.CITATION:Gao, Q D, Lu, W B, Hu, Y G, Chen, M and Yan, P, 2015. Comparison of the Zadra, Anglo-American and organic solvent procedures for desorption of gold from activated carbon loaded in carbon-in-pulp gold circuits indicates that the Anglo American and the organic solvent procedures are considerably more effective than the commonly used Zadra procedure. Organic solvent elution procedures, particularly those using acetonitrile and acetone, can provide effective gold elution and very high concentrations of gold in eluate solutions. The operational simplicity and effectiveness of the Anglo American procedure would appear to make it the most satisfactory procedure available at the present time but this may change as the solvent elution procedures become better developed. INTRODUCTION The carbon-in-pulp technique has been introduced into the gold processing industry to by-pass the often lengthy CCD and filtration steps required in the conventional Merrill Crowe cyanidation procedure for gold recovery. Adsorption of gold on to carbon is also a valuable technique for recovering trace amounts of gold from low level waste streams from conventional processing procedures.

Characterization of pore pressure is critical for appropriate design of tailings dams. Furthermore, if seepage rates through tailing embankments increase unexpectedly or become uncontrolled, undesirable conditions may prevail to progress piping or internal erosion that could lead to the dam’s instability or ultimate failure. A three-dimensional seepage analysis was performed on a tailings dam using finite element method to find the rate of seepage and pore water conditions in the embankment and foundation. The results were then compared to a conventional two-dimensional seepage analysis carried out on the typical cross section of the embankment and the field data acquired from the instrumentation system. Considering the monitoring data, comparison of seepage analyses results for the two and threedimensional models, showed that the results of the conventional two-dimensional seepage analysis are significantly underestimating reality. Relying on two-dimensional seepage analyses might result in underestimation of seepage rates and impact the safe operation of tailings dams. Similarly, unrealistic prediction of pore water pressure conditions, based on simplified seepage analyses, can lead to overestimation of the rate of strength gain of material and consequently safe embankment raising rates.

Two quantitative methods for Mineral Resource classification have been applied to a copper skarn deposit beneath a large open pit that is mining a world-class porphyry complex. A drill hole spacing study (DHSS) using the single block kriging method (SBK) and a conditional simulation method (CS) were applied to the skarn deposit and the results compared. Inputs to both processes included the proposed mining rate and stope designs to estimate the likelihood of achieving grade and metal production targets. Mineral Resource classification of the deposit considers the relative precision of tons, grade and metal predictions over quarterly and annual production periods. These relative precision estimates are calculated at 90 per cent confidence interval (CI). The SBK method represented the production period as a single large block. Kriging estimates were performed in the large block for various synthetic drill hole grids, and the estimation errors derived. The error was assumed to be normally distributed due to the large block size and quantity of samples, allowing CIs to be deduced. The CS method followed a conventional sequential Gaussian simulation workflow where grades were simulated with a 5 ft × 5 ft × 5 ft grid node spacing inside mineralisation domains. Each realisation was then averaged up to monthly production volumes represented by a combination of designed stopes, and the coefficient of variation (CV) for the averaged grade was calculated. CI on the relative precision of grade predictions were then deduced from the CVs. The two methods produced similar results; despite being calculated independently. CS results were used to report uncertainty in the proposed life-of-mine plan and highlight areas for additional drilling. SBK results were used as the basis for Mineral Resource classification as this method has been previously applied to the skarn deposit.

This study provides quantitative data on vein distributions within seven selected epithermal systems, four deposits hosted predominantly in rhyolitic rocks: Ohui, Wharekirauponga, Neavesville and Komata, and three major deposits mainly hosted in andesite: Martha Hill, Golden Cross and Karangahake. The technique of fractal analysis was used to help quantify vein distribution patterns. The fractal dimensions (D) obtained are related to the number of veins per metre, the degree of vein clustering, and vein thickness. An increase in any of these tends to increase the fractal dimension.   It is the relative relationship of these parameters that is important for the characterisation of vein distributions, and the comparison of different deposits. Within the same systems, the rhyolites are characterised by lower vein thickness and vein density, but have a higher degree of vein clustering compared to the andesites. Sections that are deeper and more centrally located within the epithermal system and/or close to major structures tend to have a greater degree of vein clustering, higher average vein thickness and density, and higher thickness to density ratios. This depth control is most pronounced in epithermal gold-silver systems because they have formed at shallow crustal levels where physico-chemical conditions change drastically both vertically and laterally. In addition to lithological and structural control at vein scale, deposit scale structure is of great importance in the deposition of economic mineralisation. Large open vein structures capable of sustaining high fluxes of hydrothermal fluid, favourable for the formation of large, high-grade gold deposits, are best developed in andesite sequences.

The geologic settings, geochemistry of host rocks, mineralogy and metal values in modern back-arc volcanic-hosted massive sulphide (VHMS) mineralisation are very similar to those in many ancient polymetallic VHMS deposits. The geology, distribution and styles of seafloor mineralisation in modem back-arc basins, especially the eastern Manus and Lau Basins, southwest Pacific, are compared to VHMS deposits in the Mount Read and Mount Windsor districts of Australia . Based on exploration and research in modem back-arc settings, geologists are now observing the direct analogues of the polymetallic VHMS deposits currently being exploited in ancient back-arc volcanic belts throughout Australia and the world.

Re-commencement of mining in the Western Zone of Beaconsfield Gold Mine following a seismically-induced rockfall fatality in April 2006 required a change of mining method involving drilling and blasting from specially developed drives in the footwall of the orebody. Broken ore is mucked remotely from ore drives on each level. Support in the footwall drives is required to maintain stability during their development and as stopes are retreated, which increases induced stresses and further seismic events are triggered. The paper outlines the challenges involved and methods used to select the footwall drive support to handle both static and dynamic load demand. The importance of load development in the support system, its displacement capacity, the compatibility of support elements and energy absorption capacity of the support system are highlighted. It is usual in any support selection process to ensure that capacity exceeds demand to create a factor of safety. In this case the demands on the system relate to load, displacement and energy absorption and the support system capacity for each must ensure that appropriate factors of safety for each are achieved. The paper shows how these factors are not independent and that selecting a high factor of safety for load can lead to compatibility problems with support elements in the support system.

The recent drought has highlighted the finite nature of AustraliaÆs divertible water resources. According to AustraliaÆs recently completed National Land and Water Resources Audit, development of water resources in southern Australia has reached or exceeded sustainable extraction limits. Similarly, 161 out of 538 groundwater management units are either totally allocated or already over allocated. Whilst mining only uses about three per cent of diverted water resources, water scarcity may be a major factor that determines whether potential mines can be developed in the future. Furthermore, the development of extraction and processing facilities that limit water use and maximise the re-use the waste water streams will be even more fundamental features of the mining industry in the 21st century than they are at present. There are encouraging examples where innovative water re-use technologies are significantly reducing the water used per unit of mined product. Whilst mining in the areas of Australia draining to the tropical seas may be less constrained by a current lack of water (60 per cent of divertible water resources drain into the Timor Sea, Gulf of Carpentaria and north east Coral Sea), it is highly probable that there will be increasing demand for these waters from the irrigation industry, whilst pressure will also be applied to ensure that environmental flows that benefit the coastal fishing and prawn industries are maintained. In the Great Artesian Basin, current research is demonstrating that the groundwaters are being recharged at rates considerably lower than current extraction. Whilst some other groundwater basins in arid and semi-arid Australia have currently untapped resources, these water are often relatively saline and/or may be intimately linked with key ecosystems in discharge areas. This paper presents an overview of the current state of our water resources and examines some of the key water use issues including allocation, use and reuse, environmental flows and competing demands on the resource that will ensure that water issues remain high on the policy agenda for mining, irrigation and other water users.

For the last decade Australia has been the leading exporter of both steam and coking coal. In the ten-year period 1989 - 1998 steam coal exports increased by 93 per cent and metallurgical coal exports increased by 50 per cent. However, profitability of the steam coal sector has been disappointing. The coking coal sector, especially the hard coking coal segment, has fared better but its profitability was more because of its ability to maintain relatively high prices rather than its inherent productivity. Until quite recently the Australian coking coal sector was widely expected to be able to maintain this comfortable state without undue effort for the three major æpartnersÆ; the companies, the State Government and the unions. But coking coal could now be heading down the path followed by steam coal that ends with long-term over-supply and, despite steady improvements in productivity, poor profitability. Steam coal entered the ænewÆ era of long-term over-supply some years ago. Over-supply was due to the rapid increase in production in Indonesia, often from new mines and Australia. AustraliaÆs production rise was underlain by the apparent belief that the best way to lower costs was to increase production. In the first couple of years costs didnÆt fall much but the additional tonnage was sold at lower and lower prices into the spot market. By mid-1998 the difference between the contract price set with Japanese utilities and spot sales was often in excess of $US12 per tonne. Japanese contract prices and tonnages have since fallen significantly. Steam coal has moved from being a product to being a commodity. Any profits are due more to the low Australian dollar rather than inherent mine productivity. Seaborne coking coal trade has been dominated by Australia, Canada and the USA, with the USA becoming less competitive. Unfortunately, when the Queensland capacity expansion was well down the pipeline, the Asian financial crisis occurred and the Japanese economy entered what appears to be a long-term recession. Contract prices fell 18 per cent, tonnages decreased and some mines have been reclassified as supplying lower priced coking coal. The paper analyses past and expected future trends in labour and mine productivity, rail freight and FOB export port cash and total costs of the Australian steam coal and coking coal sectors and discusses the market outlook for Australia. The future economic viability of the industry is analysed and discussed in the light of the rapidly changing global environment.

Rail, port and shipping charges represent 30 to 50 per cent of landed costs for Australian coal mines selling to Asia. This proportion is higher for sales to Europe, yet it is in Europe where Australian producers are aiming for increased market share. The landed cost of coal to the international customer is the key parameter which determines market competitiveness. The objective of this study is to examine Australian export coal competitiveness in terms of transport distance. The approach used examines world coking coal and steaming coal production and the transport distances between major exporting regions and importing countries. Reference is made to the importance of land transport costs and a comparative approach for emphasising the relative magnitude of this factor is developed. Models developed are examined in terms of Australia's exports and a conclusion is reached that a reduction in rail freight costs would be an effective measure for improving the competitiveness of Australia's coal industry.

The Coal Resources Survey commenced in 1974 as a search for Huntly Power Station coal, but soon developed into the most detailed regional coal search programme to be instituted in New Zealand. The program was initially conceived as geological in nature, but later included geotechnical, geohydrological, mining assessment, coal use, and environmental considerations in its investigations. The programme never undertook development work but has provided Government and the private sector with a sound basis for identifying development options. The discovery of large-scale coal resources in the Mokau, Waikato, and Taranaki regions and the lignite resources of Otago and Southland are a measure of the Survey's success. The directive by Government to phase out the NZCRS to a large extent coincides with the completion stage of the program. With most of the detailed regional study finished, it now remains to collate the data and publish summary reports at Coalfield and Coal Region level, in order to maximise the use and value of the data collected over the years.

Computer controlled truck dispatching systems is a newly-developed technical system in surface mines with shovel-truck technology. The real time dispatching criteria, as the core of optimal truck dispatching software, are analysed and a new criterion, complex dispatching criterion, is put forward. Dispatching criteria previously proposed include: 1. `Earliest Loading' (EL) - to assign a truck to the shovel at which the truck can be loaded earliest. 2. `Max Truck' (MT) - to assign a truck to the shovel at which the truck will have the shortest waiting time. 3. `Max Shovel' (MS) - to assign a truck to the shovel which has been waiting for the longest time. 4. `Minimum Saturation Degree' (MSD) - to assign a truck to the shovel at the branch where the truck flow saturation degree is minimum. 5. `Minimum Saturation Degree with Truck Cycle time consideration' (MSDTC) - as the MSD principle, with the truck travel cycle also considered. 6. `Fixed Dispatching' (FIX) - to assign trucks to fixed shovels. A system simulation model has been set up for truck dispatching system analysis. A few surface coal mines have been selected for case studies. Equipment waiting times and shift production of the system are obtained as the main outputs of the model. Simulation results show that each dispatching criterion has its own applicable range, no one can absolutely dominate the others. For example, when under-trucked, EL and MT criterion can obtain higher production than the MS criterion; when over-trucked, it is vice versa; while for MSD criteria, better results can be obtained no matter how the truck numbers fluctuate. From the view point of shovel output balance, large fluctuations occur for EL and MT criteria, while a good balance can be obtained for other criteria. In the light of dynamic change of mining system conditions, a single dispatching criterion is not necessarily reasonable. A complex dispatching criterion has been put forward to seek the complex optimum effect. Taking the advantage of each dispatching criteria, the dispatching result of a complex dispatching criterion dominates over individual dispatching criterion and a comprehensive optimum effect can be reached.

The Pleistocene basanite-tephrite Rothenberg cone complex was built by an alter- nation of strombolian and phreatomagmatic phases of explosive eruption. Two main centres, on a one km long NNE-trending fissure, were active during its construction. The strombolian deposits from three discrete facies corresponding to the crater-fill and inner wall and outer wall environments on the cone. The outer wall facies consists of an alternation of 1. 'normal' coarse-grained, relatively well- sorted lapilli and bomb beds, and 2. finer-grained poorly-sorted lapilli beds. Evidence suggests that the former was pro- duced by open-vent lava fountaining, with balanced magma supply and discharge rates, and the latter are the products of eruptions during partial blockage of the vent, by collapse of wall-rock, and formation of a degassed crust on the magma. The resulting explosions there- fore ejected a mixture of fresh actively ves- iculating magma, older partially degassed lava and material recycled from the wall of the cones. The phreatomagmatic deposits are an alternation of moderately-sorted fall beds and thinner ash-rich pyroclastic surge and rain-flushed units. The clast populations are much more diverse than strombolian ones, including abundant wall rock fragments from 0-100 m depth. The juvenile (magmatic) particles range from highly vesicular scoria to dense 'bread-crusted' clasts, and contain abundant small wall rock inclusions. The phreatomagmatic phases are products of explosive interaction of small batches of magma with shallow groundwater. Vesiculation of this magma played a small but significant role throughout the fragmentation.

The level of wire rope technology used in mine hoisting applications has a significant effect on the overall efficiency of the hoisting system. This paper discusses the effect that a reduction in rope mass per unit length and an increase in rope breaking strength can have on rock skip capacity and hence mine shaft output. A 20 per cent reduction in rope mass per metre for a typical 48 mm hoisting rope, while maintaining the breaking strength, increases the skipÆs capacity by circa 30 per cent at a suspended rope length of 3000 m. Such gains in shaft output, without any significant changes to the shaft or winder design, can have major implications for the feasibility of future deep mine projects. The technical challenge for rope manufacturers is how to get rid of 20 to 30 per cent of the rope mass while keeping the breaking strength and modulus of elasticity of the whole rope constant. CASAR are currently developing steel wire rope constructions where the steel IWRC has been replaced with high strength, high modulus fibres such as Kevlar«, Spectra« and Dyneema«. One of the key aspects of such composite rope designs is to ensure equal load sharing between the different rope components, ie in proportion to their area. If there is a significant difference in modulus between the fibre core and the steel outer strands, the core may not carry its proper proportion of the load and the outer strands would be overloaded. Some technical aspects of the design of composite steel wire ropes are discussed. A design and operational issue that needs careful consideration is the safe non destructive testing (NDT) of composite ropes. Traditional magnetic NDT would only be capable of inspecting the steel wires. Techniques therefore need to be developed that would give operators a reliable indication of the condition of the load bearing fibre core. This paper also discusses possible solutions to this very important NDT question.
