The development of computers is examined in the context of the mining industry. The risk element is given as a reason for the slow introduction of the computer into mining. Dealing with mining's uncertainty is seen as a major role for computers. The use of computers is traced from early accounting applications to current involvement with all aspects of mining. The problems associated with increasing use of computers and their impact on management is discussed in depth. Disenchantment of management is thought to arise from unfulfilled expectations. Contributory causes are given as overselling of computers, reaction against change, speed and growth of computer technology. The solution is seen to lie in a more dominant role for user management in the development of computer systems and greater emphasis on education. The computer of the future will then become integral to the mining process as an extension of management's planning and control function.

The year 2000 is not very far ahead - only five years. It should not be hard to forecast what will happen between now and then, because the technologies that will be in practical use then should all be at least in embryo existence now. There has been a historical trend for the mining industry to work ever more difficult and ever more marginal deposits. There are clearly a few exceptions and major discoveries, but the industry is becoming heavily dependent, at both the exploration and the mining stages, on technological innovation to retain acceptable profit margins. With the new exploration and mining technologies come requirements for additional computing support. Computing technology further allows the potential integration of a wide variety of different types of data to help the explorationist to build and test exploration strategies, or to help the miner to design and schedule mining operations.

Technical applications of computers within the coal industry are expanding rapidly with an increase in the number of users and user locations. Collinsville Coal Company Pty Ltd is an example of a remote and growing user company which has a Telecom link to MIM's ICL mainframe computer in Brisbane. The Planning Department is one of the technical user departments at Collinsville, with a variety of VDU, plotting and screen graphics hardware supported by the MIM Computing network. Current applications involve the storage, retrieval and manipulation of borehole information, plan and map production, volume calculations from survey data and mine ventilation modelling for underground Operations.

For many years it was realised that the methods used for unloading concentrates at Port Pirie were inefficient and labour intensive, therefore, when a decision was reached to standardise the east-west rail link from Sydney to Perth, the opportunity was taken to consider entirely new schemes for the handling of concentrates at Broken Hill and Port Pirie. After considerable testing and investigation, it was decided to install a completely new concentrates handling plant incorporating a tippler at Port Pirieòto replace the previous long established methods of unloading and dis- tributing concentrates to the operating plant.and the shipping berths. To achieve this, wagons of concentrates from the various mines are marshalled in a set order at Broken Hill and conveyed to Port Pirie in 56-wagon trains. On arrival at Port Pirie, the wagons are checked and moved to a position where they come under the control of the automatic wagon marshalling equipment.

Copper concentrate from Bougainville's copper mine located on the west slope of the Crown Prince Range on Bougainville island, is pumped 27 km to the filter and drying plant at Anewa Bay for preparation and storage prior to shipment to overseas customers. Prior to shipment the thickened concentrate slurry is passed through a test loop to check that its consistency and pH are acceptable for transportation through the main pipe line. "The Jaguar concentrator, 60 km north of Leonora, Western Australia (WA), consists of a standard closed circuit semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball mill producing a float feed of approximately 60 micron at 70 t/h. Following comminution, separate copper and zinc concentrates are produced by differential flotation. These concentrates are subsequently dewatered by thickening and then filtration.Separate audits of the Jaguar Operation’s copper and zinc concentrate thickeners were conducted to evaluate their performance, following occasions where site personnel had identified unnecessary loss of copper and zinc concentrate to the thickener overflow. The feedwells were identified as the source of the observed problems due to the following issues with their design/duty:lack of retention time in the feedwell as current design is completely opennot conducive to effective mixing required for efficient flocculationdiameter of the zinc concentrate thickener feedwell was undersize for its duty.To improve the performance of the thickeners, it is planned to replace both concentrate thickener feedwells with a high rate design for their respective duties in February 2016. The audits also identified that the feed system requires modifications with particular importance placed on minimising air entrainment of slurry into the thickener feedwell. Minimisation of air entrainment is hoped to be achieved by providing constant head pressure through installation of weir arrangements in the feedboxes and redirecting each feed pipe so that it feeds tangentially into the feedwell. In addition, improvements to the control philosophy of both thickeners will be made with the installation of an ultrasonic bed level probe and bed mass sensor, in order to make real-time adjustments to the underflow pump speed to maintain steady state operation.Following the feedwell replacement and modifications to both thickeners it is expected that losses of recovered copper and zinc will decrease to undetectable levels. Titanium and Zirconium Industries Pty. Ltd. separates rutile and zircon from heavy mineral concentrate recovered from sand dunes on the east coast of North Stradbroke Island, Queensland. Separation plant feed is delivered to Dunwich, on the west coast, by a seven mile aerial ropeway traversing the island. Mining and concentration is effected by two floating dredge-concentrators now operating on the beach 31; miles from the aerial ropeway terminal. Heavy mineral concentrate is transported hydraulically from the dredges to the ropeway through a 6 in. pipeline. Six pumps in series deliver 24 ton/hr of dry solids in a pulp containing 13 per cent solids. For maximum economy the transfer pumping system is controlled deliberately to cause transportation in the zone of incipient settlement of solids, ieat velocities below the limit deposit velocity for the particular pipe diameter, pulp density, and specific gravity of solids. Automatic density control, based on a combination of power consumption and pipeline pressure, eliminates the danger of plugging the line but periodic flushing is necessary to remove gradual accumulation of solids in the bottom of the pipe. After 15 months operation the pipeline was descaled with hydrochloric acid to remove severe blistering with rust nodules, regrowth of which is now prevented by continuous injection of inhibitors. After transporting 100,000 tons of heavy mineral the average wear on the steel portion of the pipeline was 0·01 in. and indications are that wear on the asbestos cement portion is less.DESCRIPTION OF OPERATIONSGeographyTitanium & Zirconium Industries Pty. The Kelsey Centrifugal Jig incorpo- rates the principles of operation of a conventional mineral jig, at the same time utilising high centrifugal forces to extend concentration to very fine heavy minerals. The main operating variables which are adjusted to control processing of different types of material are centrifugal force, ragging material and size distribution. Pilot plant trials have been under- taken to examine concentration of a mineral sand in which the heavy mineral particles occur mainly in the minus 0.075 plus 0.032 mm size range. Stage recoveries of greater than 90% were achieved at concentration factors of up to 2, although lower recoveries were obtained with higher concentration factors. A final concentrate containing 65% heavy minerals was obtained.

The gold adsorption capacity of ash-char and ion exchange resin Zerolit F.F. (I.P.) was evaluated by obtaining Freundlich isotherms in the presence of selected variables. It was found that the presence of Na , 2+, Ca 2+ cations and SO4 , CN , S Z, 0 2- Zn anions prompted adsorption of gold onto the char and reduced gold adsorption capacity of the resin. Temperature, particle size of adsorbent and pH of solution were found to influence the gold adsorption capacity of char and the resin. The most efficient desorbent for gold adsorbed on the ash char was S2 ions. Optimum sulphide concentrations were found in the region of 1% Na2S. Investigation into the concentration of gold from actual carbon contaminated gold residue dumps in Kalgoorlie area onto ion ex- change resin showed limited success in one case and not so in another. Maximum gold adsorption by the resin appeared when cyanidation and sulphidization treatments were carried out simultaneously in the presence of the resin.

Igneous phosphate deposits located in tropical and subtropical regions of the world are characterised by low P2O5 grades, very diversified mineralogy and intensive lateral plus vertical variations in chemical composition, mineralogical assembly, rock texture, grain size, slimes content and morphology plus surface coating of apatite particles. Those variations characterise ore types with distinct behaviour in mineral processing plants. This work reviews the main challenges to concentrate those ores, addressing developed solutions. Apatite concentration requires long chain anionic collectors to conduct reverse flotation of barite (alkyl sulfate) before direct flotation of apatite (sarcosinate, sulfosuccinate and oleate) at basic medium. The long chain collectors decrease the surface tension of the flotation solution (?LV) and a particular value of 51 mN/m was found to promote the most selective separation between apatite/gangue at a particular plant. Effective control of the magnitude of ?LV in industrial plants has not been realistic because there is a lack of reliable instruments to carry out in-situ measurements. Regarding gangue depression by starch, a review is made on possible mechanisms that promote its remarkable ability to depress some minerals (Fe-oxides, ortho plus meta silicates and calcite) vis-a-vis others (quartz, apatite and layered silicates). Flotation recovery (R) of fine (20<R<30 per cent) and coarse (30<R<60 per cent) apatite particles is considerably lower than the recovery of the intermediate ones (R>70 per cent) and inadequate hydrodynamic conditions within flotation cells are the main reasons for that behavior. Once the best hydrodynamic conditions to float coarse particles are not the same to float the fine ones, flotation of coarse and fine particles is commonly conducted at separated circuits in industrial scale. Entrainment of very fine gangue particles is an important source of contamination of apatite concentrates, mainly when weathered ores are treated. In most cases, adjustments in flotation equipment (columns or mechanical cells) promote considerable improvement in the quality of final concentrates.

The following brief paper is intended, to apply to the concentration of the silver-lead ores at Broken Hill, New South Wales, generally, but more particularly to the process as applied to the ores in the Block 10 mine. The attached plans are similar inmany respects to those prepared, recently for the Block 10 company.Most of the information here given is already well known to those members who are conversant with the concentration practices of this field, but it is the writer's object to give just a few of those figures which he found difficult to obtain when first engaging in practical work. At that time no text-books were at hand from which it was possible to get sufficient details for practical working purposes.It is first supposed that the mine has been thoroughly explored and has been found to contain a lbde sufficient in size ·and quality to warrant the erection of a concentrating plant. The points then to determine are:-(1.) The quantity and cost of water available for steam-making and ore-dressing purposes.(2.) The most convenient site for the mill.

Beaches contain the residue of eroded rocks which have resisted weathering, and it is common to find in all beaches some of the harder, heavy minerals. The natural sorting action of waves and winds tends to concentrate the heavy minerals into banded deposits.The value of such deposits is extremely variable. Even amongst the more concentrated deposits, the principal minerals, in the vast majority of cases, are magnetic, titaniferous magnetite and other forms of iron oxide, which, in the present state of mineral economics and technology, are of little or no value.Valuable minerals of fairly common occurrence in beach sand deposits are rutile, zircon, ilmenite, monazite and chromite, and each of these minerals, as well as others of less common occurrence, is obtained from beach deposits in various parts of the world.Along a stretch of 300 miles of coast from Coff's Harbour in New South Wales to North Stradbroke Island in Queensland, occur unique concentrations of heavy minerals. The principal minerals which occur are rutile, zircon and ilmenite, and for some years these deposits have contributed half to three-quarters of the world's consumption of rutile and zircon 1, ,2. The only other notable beach sand concentrations in Australia are at a number of places in the southwest of Western Australia, where deposits containing highgrade ilmenite are being developed.

Traditional engineering practice for concentrator design uses a mixture of risk minimisation options and capital minimisation approaches. Often this is based on the preferences and experiences of the engineers involved.A geometallurgical approach involves identifying primary lithology, alteration, and mineral dispersion patterns within a deposit to allow representative samples for test programs. This provides a method to infer from laboratory test results meaningful production data for larger amounts of the ore body. Geometallurgical models can be integrated into the resource block model and subsequent mine plan and can assist in predicting when difficulties in the processing route might be expected, allow adjustment of the design to compensate for these or provide an early warning system so that production forecasts can be more adequately developed. Simulation modelling is the process of creating a computer model of a real system based on mathematical logic. In simulated time, the model explores the randomness and chronological sequencing of events observed on real systems. The objective is to mimic the real system with sufficient accuracy to make predictions of real behaviour under experimental conditions. Amec Foster Wheeler often use the ‘discrete-event’ simulation modelling technique. This method is well suited for inclusion of the statistical variation of effects in unit operation, mechanical availability, throughput and operating strategy (based on historical operating data for equipment downtime), operating schedules and equipment capacity. The net result of the simulation model is an analysis that can quantify risks in terms of system performance and capital and operating costs.CITATION:Harbort, G and Quan, K, 2017. This paper outlines a range of strategies for steady state optimisation of most types of concentrators. Optimisation is considered in terms of comminution performance, energy efficiency, concentrator strategy and overall mine/concentrator operating philosophies. Application becomes more complex as the range of optimisation is expanded. However, the potential gains also increase. A step by step framework for data collection and analysis is provided. This process is facilitated by powerful simulation and mass balancing programs which are now in common use. Once a sound, steady state rationale for optimisation has been developed, it may be used to provide a fine foundation for process control system development.

In May 1991, AZSA commissioned a new conventional Cell House. This paper focuses on the major improvements introduced in the design and the construction of the equipment, machinery and control. An effective control system together with good reporting and routine operation has resulted in quality control of the Cell House at the highest possible level. Consequently the monthly current efficiency consistently averages above 93 per cent with a total energy usage of 3000 AC kWh/t of cathode zinc. The new concept for the year 2000 and beyond is introduced.

The New Zealand rail authority, Kiwi Rail and Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA), are jointly planning a new mainline rail link between Auckland’s downtown Britomart Station and the existing Western Line at Mt Eden. In 2009, APB&B, a consortia of Aecom, Beca, Parsons Brinkerhoff and Hassell Architects where commissioned to develop the conceptual design, Assessment of Environmental Effects (AEE) and business case for the new 3 km rail line towards preparing a Notice of Requirement to protect the route through Auckland’s central business district.This paper describes the engineering challenges in the development of the conceptual design for the three proposed underground stations, the running tunnels and connections to the existing network. Feasible alignment and station location options were developed and evaluated using multi-criteria analysis based on key client functional requirements, constraint mapping and environmental impacts. The resulting preferred scheme was then developed to a conceptual design suffi cient for assessment of environmental effects, risks, and the development of a robust construction methodology to allow high level capital cost estimates.The paper describes some of the major challenges overcome to develop the concept, including steep gradients, narrow street envelopes with existing buildings and structures, the need for large platform spaces with low ECBF rock cover and complex connections at Britomart and the main line near Mt Eden.The development of the conceptual design of the underground stations in particular demonstrates the need for a holistic value engineering approach to satisfying the architectural and functional requirements, in a highly constrained dense urban environment and at lowest practical cost. The construction methodology was a key input to the conceptual design development throughout.The conceptual design will be used as the fundamental basis for the development of the AEE and business case for the project in the future.

While the general concepts are relevant to a wide range of gold ore bodies, their application is specific to particular ore bodies.The important factors contributing to the recoverable reserves aregeology, mining method, dilution, ore loss, sampling methods and theultimate bench height used in production.The implications of current methods of computing recoverable reservesare reviewed and some alternative approaches to recoverable reservecomputation based on production experience are presented.
