The paper considers the factors that will control the importance and the nature of R & D required by the Australian mineral industry over the next decade. The process required to determine the appropriate priorities for research and how it must be managed is described. The work of the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association is used to illustrate this process.

Tonnes per Hour - Kilowatts per Tonne Tonnes of Mesh Size Produced Kilowatts per Tonne of Mesh Size Produced - Terms often heard in discussions of grinding mill and grinding circuit performance. All of them only tell a partial story as none of them relate to a fixed reference or overall standard measurement. Tonnes per Hour gives the production rate relating it to a specified or desired rate set as a goal or objective. As such it does not take into account changes in feed size, product size or grindability. Kilowatts per Tonne which accurately stated is kilowatt hours per tonne brings power consumed into the picture which is related to grindability but still does not take into account changes in feed size and product size without which power changes do not necessarily reflect the complete effect of changes in Grindability.

A method is proposed for the determination of antimony in ores. Antimony is volatilized as antimony iodide by heating with ammonium iodide at a controlled temperature.The fusion mixture is extracted with hydrochloric acid and the antimony content is measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry using an air/ acetylene flame. The time taken for analysis when comparedwith existing fusion and separation procedures is considerably reduced. Cations and anions likely to be present in antimony ores were also studied for possible interference effects but were not found to interfere.

Seismic tomographic imaging has been applied to determine the blast induced damage zones in bauxite pillars in underground mining. At the retreating stage, when pillar dimensions are reduced from 8 x 8 m to approximately 5 x 5 m, the' seismic tomographies reveal, through measurements of the P-wave velocities which is a measure of the degree of fracturation of the pillar rock mass, the presence of three zones within each pillar. In the external zone, where velocities recorded are below 750 m/s. extensive pillar damage occurs which is attributed to both the growth and coalescence of pre-existing cracks and even the creation of new cracks in the rock mass. This effect is in agreement with literature, when considering the peak particle velocity as a criterion for rock failure in tunnels. In the intermediate zone, where velocities range between 7S0-1000 m/s, damage to a much lesser extent occurs which is due mostly to growth of pre-existing cracks and widening of their apertures. The inner zone, where velocities exceed 1000 m/s, is considered to be unaffected by blasting. Simple remedial measures of low cost, which are based on blasting mechanics are proposed to minimise the blast induced damage zone and consequently the transition zone.

Mineral resource and ore reserve estimates are founded on two sources of data: tonnage and grade. The tonnage is a product of volume and density; both of which are estimates. Density impacts numerous operational factors, which include, but are not limited to, mine design, mine planning, equipment selection and operational performance. Hence, density is a significant parameter and its determination requires similar care as the measurement of grade. Selecting an appropriate method to determine density, and ensuring its rigorous application, thus reduces risk and can improve operational performance, which in turn increases profit margin.Different Anglo American sites use a variety of practices and protocols to determine density, which is highly dependent on the physical characteristics of the orebody, local conditions and historical practices. Also, individual sites sometimes execute the same method in a slightly different way, which may also affect the outcome of the measurements. In order to gain a better understanding of how density is determined at Anglo American projects and operations, a review of these techniques was undertaken. The objective of the study was to identify and share good practices across the company, as well as to look for improvement opportunities, where applicable. Ten different methods of measuring density, applied to nine different commodities, were identified and described. An additional technique was recently developed by Anglo American Technical Solutions. The core pycnometer is a large gas displacement pycnometer capable of measuring density at high accuracy on full pieces of intact core.This paper provides an overview of methods used to determine density within the Anglo American Group, including quality control and quality assurance aspects. It is not the purpose of this paper to identify a preferred method, but to highlight the importance of choosing the best suited practice for a project or mine site. In addition, a case study comparing two different density determination methods applied to the same rock samples from the Los Bronces Copper mine was undertaken and the results of that study are presented here.Selecting the most appropriate method to determine density and comparing results from two or more techniques against each other, together with other suitable quality control procedures, is considered to be of utmost importance for all mining operations and exploration projects.CITATION:Makhuvha, M, Arellano, R M and Harney, D M W, 2014. The combustible volatile matter in coal mine roadway dusts (CVM) has been determined using x-ray backscatter techniques. The correlation between x-ray and chemical techniques is reasonably good for the 92 samples from collieries on the Bulli seam, and the maximum error expected at the maximum level of 11· 5 weight per cent CVM permitted in the N.S.W. Coal Mines Regulation Act, 1912, as amended, is about ± 2·5 weight per cent. This x-ray technique can be used only when the combustible volatile content of the coal matter (cvm) varies within a limited range, and a separate calibration is required for each coal seam.Portable equipment based on a radioisotope x-ray source ahd digital ratemeter makes possible simple and rapid analysis, and with adaptation to use in coal mines should lead to much more comprehensive testing- ofroadways and hence improved overall prevention of coal dust explosions.

This paper addresses critical environmental, health, regulatory and scientific concerns related to gold mining activities in the specific area of Barberton, Mpumalanga, South Africa. The paper thus calls for informed decisions to be made by the authorities to safeguard both the environment and people’s health. The novelty of this study is based on its comprehensive nature of the simultaneous assessment of both cyanide and potential toxic elements (PTEs) in tailings, while taking into account their composition variability over time. By combining these aspects, it is then possible to provide a holistic understanding of the contamination risks associated with mining tailings and thus justify the need for regular monitoring and supervision to ensure compliance against regulatory limits. Additionally, this paper considered investigating the dynamic nature of tailings, which are subject to changes in their chemical composition due to exposure to weathering by various agents. In this study, the determination of weak acid dissociable (WAD) and free cyanide in tailings was performed using a validated method employing the South African Council for Mineral Technology (MINTEK) Laboratory Cynoprobe. The PTEs in tailings were determined by an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES). The results revealed that the tailings contained primarily substantial amounts of PTEs, including Fe (87 566 to 37 800 mg/L), Cu (271 to 110 mg/L), Mn (2100 to 680 mg/L), Ni (400 to 390 mg/L), Zn (180 to 68 mg/L), Cr (645 to 510 mg/L), As (450 to 128 mg/L), and Pb (up to 35 mg/L). The cyanide concentrations in tailings varied between 0.20 mg/L and 0.26 mg/L for free CN (with a mean of 0.23 mg/L in water leaching), 0.23 mg/L to 0.28 mg/L for free CN (with a mean of 0.25 mg/L in alkali leaching), 0.24 mg/L to 0.35 mg/L for WAD CN (with a mean of 0.28 mg/L in water leaching), and 0.31 mg/L to 0.39 mg/L for WAD CN (with a mean of 0.35 mg/L in alkali leaching). The measured concentration of cyanide and the PTEs was compared to the minimum permissible levels enforced by the South African Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) and the Water Research Commission (WRC) regulations that govern the disposal of hazardous constituents into the environment. Additionally, it was observed that the concentrations of contaminants in the tailings exceeded the acceptable minimum limits for hazardous waste exposure, posing risks to the environment and human health.

THIS excellent volumetric method commends itself as a means of estimating the fineness of silver firstly, owing to the large number of possible impurities which do not affect its accuracy (these impurities include Cu-up to 70 % Au, Ph, Zn, Bi, Cd, Fe, Mn, Sb, and As); secondly, the method combines accuracy with speed. The above impurities are the only ones likely to be present in the B. H. A. S. Pty. Ltd. refined silver, and, with the exception of Cu and Au, the others, if present at all, would be well under 0.1 parts per 1000.Briefly stated, the method consists in the solution of the refined silver in HN03 , addition of ferric alum (indicator), and titration with an alkaline (either ammonium or potassium) thiocyanate solution until the brown ferric thiocyanate is formed, and gives a definite tint to the solution. The method is used at the Port Pirie smelters, and the outstanding feature in the method as there applied is the type of burette employed. This burette enables the operator to read 0.01 of a cc. with ease, whereas, with the ordinary burette fitted with a float, 0.05 of a cc., when a number of readings have to be taken, becomes very straining to the eyes. Moreover, waiting for the float to rise, and dislodging air bubbles from it, hinders rapid working.A description of the burette and fittings is appended with fig. 2. Failure of rock materials is a process of crack propagation. Crack initiation takes place when the crack tip stress intensity K reaches a critical value called fracture toughness, K1C. The rock fracture toughness is known to be affected by the surrounding environment such as temperature, confining pressure and humidity. In order to examine the effect of humidity, a series of semi-circular bend tests were performed under various water vapour pressures in a rock material that is known to be anisotropic. Water vapour promotes stress corrosion of rock and therefore the fracture toughness was found to have a decreasing trend with increasing water vapour pressure. The rate of decreasing the fracture toughness depends on the microcrack density that promotes the migration of water vapour into the rock. Also in an anisotropic rock, the fracture toughness depends on the direction of crack in relation to the anisotropy of the rock material.

A method for the determination of the gas content of coal seams is presented which improves upon existing methods. The method makes use of a gravitational technique for measurement of the gas desorbed. The amount of lost gas is estimated by determining an empirical relationship relating the desorption of gas with time for each sample separately. This is to replace the assumption that desorp- tion follows a square root law with time. Laboratory investigations have been conducted which indicate that the square root desorption law does not hold good for carbon dioxide. Results of investigations on various factors influencing the technique are presented. It is shown that co-efficients of the empirical equation are dependent upon the elapsed time and the period of observation. Data about gas pressure measurements is presented and it is concluded that gas pressure can be approxi- mated to 0.6 times the pressure below a column of water equal to the depth of cover. Semi-confined, trachy-andesite sills which overlie the German Creek Seam, within the critical tensile strain zone, form major groundwater hazards to longwall mining at the German Creek underground mines. The water contained in these aquifers is normally neutral, but highly saline. Techniques used to detect aquifers include routine air-lift pumping in exploratory drill holes, downhole geophysical and geological logging and upstage packer testing. Hydraulic constants are calculated from pump-out and pump-in test results. Hydraulic parameters for the calculation of mine inflow rates are determined from pump-out test results because these tests appear to be more representative of aquifer drainage during goat dewatering than pump- in testing. During mining of the first longwall block at Central Colliery, caving fractures intersected overlying aquifers after the longwall had retreated 40m, and mine water inflow rate rapidly increased from less than one litre/sec to 25 litres/sec. The amount of water pumped out of the mine during first panel extraction was 140 megalitres with drawdown occurring over an area of 168 hectares. In the Southern Colliery area approximately 324 megalitres of highly saline water which is actively stored in the Aquila Sill area will be pre-drained from six well points prior to longwall mining. With effective pre-drainage from surface drill holes, maximum inflow rate into the mine during initial goafing can be reduced from 165 litres/sec to about 45 litres/sec.

Iron ore oxide and oxyhydroxide minerals such as haematite (eg various types of martite and microplaty haematite), different forms of goethite, magnetite, hydrohaematite and kenomagnetite were analysed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) techniques, to determine the type and proportion of deleterious elements present and the chemistry of associated gangue minerals. The aim was to characterise elements potentially deleterious for agglomeration and steelmaking, eg sulfur, phosphorus, aluminium and silicon and correlate their distribution with mineral texture and association, to provide feedback on downstream processing performance and product quality.Examples of characteristic mineral associations are shown from various genetic styles of iron ores, including magnetite banded iron formation (BIF), BIF-derived martite-goethite and skarn-type magnetite ores.A number of examples are presented demonstrating the benefits of the use of combined techniques of reflected optical microscopy, SEM and EPMA data to reliably identify ore and gangue minerals and their associations in different types of iron ores.

Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and other near infrared (NIR) tools have been used in the bauxite industry for many years. Infrared spectroscopy exploits the differences in chemical composition and lattice structure to produce a characteristic response. Spectral devices, such as those from ASD Inc and the HyLoggerTM, provide qualitative mineralogical data targeted towards hydrated minerals detected in the near and short wave infrared region. The FTIR spectrum extends into the mid and thermal infrared range and can therefore respond to the presence of silicates and oxides, in addition to hydrates and carbonates.The key to successful utilisation of infrared spectra, however, is the interpretation methodology. In this study, FTIR spectra were calibrated against quantitative X-ray diffraction data for the determination of the mineralogy of iron ore. A full pattern profiling machine learning technique was utilised for the calibration, and the assessment of the regressions determined from an independent validation set. The abundance of key minerals – hematite, goethite, kaolinite and quartz – were determined and the results correlated against X-ray fluorescence assays and loss on ignition data. The results of the study indicate that spectral techniques using a full-pattern profiling machine learning approach and artificial neural networks can be used successfully to obtain objective and quantitative mineralogical data to support field observations and analytical results for iron ore resource modelling. Tin in ores containing 0·025 to 1·5 per cent tin can be determined polarographically by the reduction of the chlorostannite ion at the dropping mercury electrode in 2M hydrochloric acid solution containing 15 per cent ammonium chloride. The tin is separated from interfering elements by distillation as the tetrabromide and collected from the distillate by co-precipitation with aluminium hydroxide. The method can detect 0·01 per cent tin in ore.INTRODUCTIONAn iodimetric method, suitable for routine analysis of titrating tin in concentrations down to 1 per cent, has been available for some years (Low, Weinig, and Schoder, 1939).As concentrations fall below 1 per cent tin, there is increasing difficulty in obtaining a distinct end point due to large amounts of iron and silica normally present after fusion of the ore. Since concentrations of tin down to 0·02 per cent are significant in ore dressing products it was necessary to examine methods to determine such low concentrations, and to adapt these to tin ores containing a wide variety of other minerals.EXPERIMENTALDigestion and separationCassiterite, the principal tin mineral, is refractory but readily attacked by a sodium peroxide flux to yield soluble sodium stannate. IN the determination of very small amounts of lead, the usual analytical methods are far from being satisfactory. Small amounts of lead may be present in the reagents empioyed, and it is customary to run a blank experiment to correct the error arising in this way. When the correction is of small magnitude compared with the amount of lead in the sample, this procedure may be adopted; but when very small amounts of lead are being determined it may happen that the lead found in the blank is as much, or even more, than the lead actually present in the sample, and the analysis has to be rejected. Moreover, the blank experiment cannot check errors which are not common to the blank and the analysis itself eg, the apparatus used in the parallel experiments, etc. It seemed to be desirable, tl;l.erefore, to make an investigation of the problem to ascertain, as far as possible, the nature of the errors arising from the introduction or loss of lead during the analysis, and how far these could be eliminated or corrected for; also, to determine the limits of accuracy of the improved method and the minimum amount of lead that could be reliably estimated.In the investigation, reliability and sensitiveness were regarded as essential features. Speed of operation, on the other hand, was considered of less importance. The amounts of lead dealt with being usually less than 1 mg, there is no alternative to the use of a colorimetric method. The latter, depending as it does upon the development of a brown coloration when ammonium sulphide is added to a very dilute -solution of a lead salt, is far from being a characteristic test for lead. Indeed, it is well known that the salts of most of the commonly occurring metals interfere with this test. A novel method utilizing PIXE with microbeams following fire-assay has been developed to determine PGE and Au at sub-ppm levels suitable for application in exploration. Analyses of the prills from the lead and silver fire-assay yield Pt, Pd and Au concentrations readily. NiS must be used as collector if the complete suite of PGE is required, but this method is not as Convenient.

IN concentrating mills, where several millerals are recovered for realisation in more than one product, various systems are used to express the relative economic value of the work done, and, in the hope that it may prove of use to other operators, the writer will describe a system which, in his opinion, is more complete than any other that he has seen published.The controlling factor in all mill work must be based on the economic result represented by the greatest margin possible between the realizable value of the products and the cost of obtaining same.From a mill-man's point of view these are affected by the following factors:1. Metal contents of ore.2. Grade of products.3. Recoveries.4. Working costs.The grade of ore milled is usually outside the mill-man's control, but this may exercise a considerable influence on the grade of his products, metal recoveries, and revenue per ton of ore. Higher grades or recoveries may be obtained by using a more expensive process, or by additional grinding or reagents, and the economic comparison can only be arrived at by obtaining an analysis showing the monetary value of each variation within the possible limits.In the system to be described, the value of unit variations of metal contents of the ore, grade of products and recoveries are calculated in terms of a monetary unit per ton of ore with the returning charges ruling, and any suitable metal prices. The theory of sampling has progressed slowly over the last century. The concepts of correct sampling were known to mining engineers such as D W Brunton in the 19th century. It was recognised early in the 20th century that the Poisson distribution of particles carrying the target analyte was the key to the uncertainties between samples of a given mass. However, no efforts were made until the 1980s to determine the entire sampling distribution as a function of sample mass. The variance of sampling was made clear by Gy and others, but none attempted to determine the entire sample assay density function until J H Venter in South Africa applied the method of characteristic functions to the problem.Venter applied the method to a specific case of very low analyte concentrations in samples of very fine particle size where his assumption of constant sample mass was justified. When his general methodology is applied to the more general problem, it can be shown that the assumption of constant sample mass is no longer justified and leads to some anomalous results for sampling variance. Venter’s method can be expanded to allow for a statistically variable sample mass and to take into account the size distribution of particles that carry no analyte.This paper presents the basis of Venter’s work and shows how the approach can be easily modified to yield results for the variance that are consistent, for example, with the work of Gy.
