The iron (Fe) concentration in nickel slag is high, making its recovery and utilisation a hot and challenging topic. In the nickel smelting process, using CaO instead of SiO2 to adjust slag’s composition, and then directly reducing Fe from the output of molten slag is a more feasible method in practice for Fe recovery in nickel slag. The adjustment of slag’s composition in the nickel smelting process will have an impact on the distribution of impurity elements such as Pb, Zn, and As. In this paper, the slag adjustment of nickel smelting process was carried out with the oxygen-enriched topblowing system. The distribution of impurity elements in the smelting products with each composition slag was conducted by using thermodynamic software. Experimental verification was performed with rich oxygen top-blowing, and the distribution characteristics of impurity elements in the smelting products were characterised to explore the differences in mineral phases of impurity elements with each smelting conditions, elucidating the distribution patterns of Pb, Zn, and As in each phase. The results indicate that after slag adjustment, impurity elements are more easily to volatilisation and removal into the gas, reducing their total concentration in slag and matte. In the slag, the existence form of Pb, Zn is changed from silicate to ferrate, and As is changed from arsenate to low-valent arsenic oxide. It is easier to decompose the impurity-containing mineral phase and remove the impurity elements in the subsequent iron extraction process.

The external urfaces and interiors (as polished sections) of particles of coconut hell and extruded peat activated carbons taken from everal Australian carbon-in-pulp operations were examined with an optical micro cope, a scanning electron microscope, and an electron microprobe.Calcium carbonate (calcite) precipitated from the pulp was the major inorganic material on the external surfaces of the carbon particle, but several ore minerals, including quartz, hematite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, and clay minerals were also identified, along with trona, gypsum, a nickel cyanide, and a magnesium salt. Sections of carbon particles showed that calcite was virtually the only introduced inorganic material inside the carbons.It was distributed in the pores and cracks throughout the coconut shell carbon particles but tended to be concentrated in the outer layers of the extruded peat carbon particles. The mechanism of calcite formation and deposition is uncertain. Gold X-ray dot maps showed that gold was distributed through to the centre of coconut shell carbons and to a depth of at least 500 µm in extruded peat carbons. The distribution of gold within the carbon particles was similar to that of calcite.

Thirty six different commodities were recorded from 3708 mineral occurrences in the Atherton 1:250 000 Sheet area, mapped by personnel of the Queensland Department of Resource Industries. Tin, occurring in 56% of all mineral occurrences, is the most common, followed by copper, tungsten, silver, lead, gold, fluorite molybdenum, zinc and antimony. The densest area of mineral occurrences is the Herberton Mineral Field, one of the most intensively mined areas in the state.The majority of occurrences in the sheet area are fracture, fault or shear related vein or lenticular deposits, with subordinate types being pipe, skarn, endogreisen, disseminated and porphyry copper deposits. However the larger mines in the area are commonly of the subordinate types including the Red Dome gold-copper skarn, the Wolfram Camp and Bamford Hill tungsten- m olydbenum endogreisens, and the Vulcan pipe tin deposit. Significant gold prospects occur in quartz-antimony veins, breccia pipes and skarn deposits associated with rhyolitic porphyry dykes. A fluorite-gold association has been noted in several areas on the western side of the sheet.Mineralised fractures are predominantly oriented in a NNW direction which is the major trend in the Hodgkinson Province. Secondary N and NE directions are also present.

The goal of this study is to characterise co-processed clinkers by identifying the most common minor elements, their distribution in the clinkers and possible effects on the mineralogical properties of the same. The results show the presence of an elevated content of transition metals, especially manganese concentrated in the matrix (up to three per cent) of the clinkers. Anomalous concentrations of arsenic have also been detected, especially at silicate crystal edges. The results indicate that the tracer elements can perfectly be associated to the mineralogical characteristics of the clinkers.

The increasing complexity of ore resources and recycled materials in the feed of pyrometallurgical processes present a technical challenge to the metallurgical engineers working on maximising the recovery of the valuable elements and minimising the environmental impact of the processes. To address this challenge, the availability of computational tools that can predict the mass and energy balance in complex systems is required. Then the accurate description of phase equilibria in the complex multicomponent systems describing the chemistry of the pyrometallurgical processes becomes critical for the correct implementation of the indicated tools and facing the outlined industrial challenges. In the present study the distribution of selected elements (Pb, Zn, Fe, As, Sn, Sb, Bi and Ni) between oxide liquid and metal in the ‘CuO0.5’-CaO-AlO1.5 system in equilibrium with Cu metal at 1400°C (liquidus of CaAl2O4) was experimentally studied using the equilibration and quenching technique followed by the electron probe X-ray microanalysis of the resulted samples. The study covered a wide range of effective p(O2) over the system from 10-11 to 10-3.5 (corresponding to formation of immiscible CuO0.5-rich slag). To avoid loss of volatile elements (Pb, Zn, As, Sn, Sb and Bi), a correlation between ‘CuO0.5’ in oxide liquid and p(O2) in open system was obtained first, followed by studying the volatile elements distribution in closed conditions (Al2O3 crucible sealed in SiO2 ampoule), where ‘CuO0.5’ concentration was used as a marker to evaluate the effective p(O2) over the system. The experimental results were then used for the optimisation of the thermodynamic model parameters of the system as part of the integrated experimental and self-consisting thermodynamic modelling research program of phase equilibria in the Cu-Pb-Zn-Fe-Ca-Si-Al-Mg-O-S-(As, Sn, Sb, Bi, Ag, Au, Ni, Cr, Co and Na) gas/oxide liquid/matte/speiss/metal/solids system.

Three volcanic sequences of different ages occur close together in the Burdekin Falls area, southeast of Charters Towers in northeastern Queensland. The oldest is equated with the Cambro-Ordovician Mt Windsor Volcanics, and consists mostly of strongly deformed, regionally metamorphosed rhyolitic lava and minor feldspathic to quartzose sandstone. This unit is overlain by folded but unmetamorphosed Upper Devonian-Lower Carboniferous volcanics (DCv) of the lowermost Drummond Basin sequence. The primary volcanic facies of (DCv) principally comprises andesitic and rhyolitic lavas, and dacitic ignimbrites. Similar volcanics are widespread in the lowest formations of the Drummond Basin sequence elsewhere, and dominate that sequence east of the Anakie Inlier. The youngest volcanic sequence is Late Carboniferous and composed of lower, more deformed, compositionally diverse ignimbrites, lavas and conglomerates, overlain by generally less deformed rhyolitic ignimbrite sheets. The upper part is equated with the Bulgonunna Volcanics which extend 90km south to the Mt Coolon area. The Burdekin Falls area contains an ignimbrite stratigraphy different from that in the south. However, one of the most voluminous ignimbrites (Locharwood Rhyolite) in the southern stratigraphy is also present in the north, enabling the two to be correlated.Each of the three volcanic sequences reflects proximity to eruptive sources. Both the volcanics at the base of the Drummond Basin sequence and the Late Carboniferous volcanics are largely the products of subaerial eruptions. The former were erupted from several intermediate-composition volcanoes, and the latter from multiple-vent silicic calderas. All three sequences are considered to be prospective for precious and/or base metal mineralisation. Polymetallic massive sulphide deposits occur in the Mt Windsor Volcanics farther west, and many epithermal gold prospects and mines are hosted by the volcanics at the base of the Drummond Basin, especially east of the Anakie Inlier. The Late Carboniferous volcanic sequence is deeply eroded, and co-magmatic high-level plutons are widely exposed; this sequence may therefore be more prospective for deeper-than-epithermal mineral deposits.

Diversity is a key strength for Western Mining Corporation. An international corporation with assets of about $A10 billion, WMC is engaged in both mining and downstream processing of minerals including nickel, gold, alumina, copper and talc, as well as having interests in oil and gas production and agricultural fertiliser. The company is focusing on several core commodities that will maintain its strength in the years ahead. Although most current mineral assets are within Australia, it plans to have 25 per cent of its operations off-shore by the turn of the century, and be a major producer in at least six core commodities. WMC's strategic and management focus has shifted from a regional approach to a commodity focus so that it can more readily cater for different markets with differing sensitivities. Diversification has characterised the mining industry in this country and globally in recent decades, and in Western Australia in particular. One of the most obvious aspects of diversification is technological change which continues at a rapid and sometimes bewildering pace. A function of technological advances is the increased capacity to further diversify the range of minerals which can be identified in economic concentrations and profitably extracted. This broadening of the total base of the industry has a synergistic effect on its further development by extending its geographical spread and increasing scope for decentralised infrastructure. Another aspect of diversification is the corporate thrust towards establishing overseas mining bases for a variety of reasons. Off-shore (sea bed) mining is a further manifestation of increasing diversity, although very much in its infancy.

During the 1960s, '1970s and 1980s, the Australian companies spent much of their time exploring in Australia. It was only some of the major companies like CRA and BHP that had explored in places like Bougainville and Chile. However, during the mid-1980s some of the smaller companies started looking beyond their shore towards other opportunities in other countries. Why did they do this? Were they pushed or did they jump? And where did they go?

Why go to the CIS? The vast mineral potential of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) has long been recognised, but it has taken the lowering of the iron curtain to open up the region to serious mineral development consideration by the Western World. The advent of a free market economy and the emergence of the Independent States with pressing needs for foreign investment has led to a greatly improved investment climate. Coupled with the desire for some of the more entrepreneurial resources companies to head the wave of investment to the region, this sequence of events has promised a great deal, but delivered only modest progress to-date. Potential gold project development has provided the major focus, for three reasons: the region is highly prospective for gold, gold projects tend to have a relatively lower start-up capital cost compared to base metal and fossil fuel projects and finally bullion or refined gold is more readily transportable and easier to sell.

Australia contains some of the most productive mining areas and is characterised by ancient landscapes and highly variable hydrology. Historical mining of iron ore, coal and other minerals has targeted ore deposits located above water tables, and elevated above creek lines where possible to reduce cost. The downturn in mining caused by falling ore prices over recent years has triggered a drive to reduce cost, maximise yield and delay capital expenditure associated with opening new mines. So as the ore deposits with more favorable mining conditions become depleted there is an increased focus on mining ore associated with valley floors and creek lines. This is demonstrated by a regional assessment of the extent of Channel Iron Deposits (CID) and Iron Ore (Fe) Mines and Deposits in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia (Figure 1). A large proportion of these mines are, or plan to, target high grade CID ore associated with existing creek systems. Figure 2 shows outcropping and inferred sub-cropping CID extents, which suggests there are vast quantities of CID ore deposits throughout the Pilbara Region, intersected by major creeks which could be mined at some point in the future using creek diversions (Atkinson et al., 2017). A similar picture could also be produced for coal mining in Queensland, particularly in areas such as the Bowen Basin.While creek diversions provide an opportunity to maximise the utilisation of these orebodies and extend the life of mine, creek diversions can involve substantial financial, social, environmental and regulatory risks that need to be carefully managed (Markham et al., 2017, Atkinson et al., 2017). This paper discusses the key issues and opportunities associated with diversion decision making. It highlights the importance of using a well-structured assessment methodology that allows key stakeholders to be part of the assessment process and is complementary to material presented in Atkinson et al., (2017). Design considerations for operational and closure designs are presented, as well as mine planning considerations, risks, cost saving opportunities and the benefits of an integrated approach to design. Prob- lems occurred due to delay in supply of essen- tial rock support materials from overseas and alternative methods using locally available materials were developed. Several major rock- falls and rock movements occurred and remedial measures are outlined.

DIVERSITY There are plenty of examples to show that diversity has been the fundamental downfall of many organisations, particularly when you consider the international position. What about core business, the return of companies to key competence directions and market focus. The stockmarket for instance defines groups and companies in key groups of core business. The expectation is that companies toe the line and do not diversify across their areas of defined expertise. In essence, the market has given notice that the requirements are to focus and stick to our core business. So what right does the conference have to suggest that diversity is the key to prosperity. Hasn't the organiser read the book, studied the history, listened to the market - obviously not. Have they got it wrong, My feeling and belief is no - the organisers have got it right. However, the matter is not as simple as first perceived. What is Diversity, or Diversification as I would prefer? Is it a product position? Is it a geographic position? Is it an expansion or change in services offered? Does a gold mining company diversify into copper or diamonds or aluminium or nickel? Does a gold miner in Australia diversify into China or Kazakhstan or West Africa? How do the two relate? They don't. A successful company will always possess a 'core competence' not so much a 'core business'. The best example of this is the service company extraordinaire - McDonalds. They don't sell hamburgers or french fries, they sell a service, a convenience, a lifestyle. The core business is hamburgers and if McDonalds were to diversify further into new styles of hamburgers, I suggest to you they would fail. But if McDonalds were to diversify into other products based on their 'core competence', provision of service, then I would suggest to you they would be very successful. DML Resources Limited - Mining Division produced over 50 000 oz of alluvial gold in the 1995 - 1996 year from five operations located in the West Coast and Otago Regions on the South Island of New Zealand. DML Resources Limited - Mining Division have a twenty year history of alluvial gold mining development in New Zealand. Recent expansions have seen the establishment of two operations in Chile whilst exploration continues in Bolivia, Peru and Argentina. The overseas growth is based on a stable production base in New Zealand focussed on the West Coast and Southland/Otago present and future operations. DML Resources consider that the mining potential in the Arahura Valley on the West coast will be fundamental to their New Zealand operations for some time. Collectively the plants operating in this catchment are referred to as the Poutini Project. Recent and late Pleistocene gravels derived from the erosion of the Alpine Schists running parallel to the Alpine Fault located on the Pacific/Australian Plant boundary are thought to be the sources of the alluvial gold in the Arahura and adjacent catchments. These gravels have been extensively mined for the past 130 years yielding some six million ounces over this period. Production from the Poutini Project started in 1989 and stood at approximately 35 000 oz for the 1995 - 1996 year. This production was split among three plants each working different areas of the deposit. Recovery techniques from each of the plants are fundamentally the same. Gravels are fed to a floating treatment plant where, following screening, the gold is recovered using jig plants and knudsen bowls. Overburden to wash stripping ratios vary between zero and seven to one with plants treating between 80 and 250 cubic metres per hour. Restoration of the land following mining is undertaken progressively. All land in the Poutini Project area mined to date has been restored to a standard suitable for dairy farming purposes. The Poutini Project is a cooperative venture between the Maori landowners and DML Resources Ltd. The Arahura River has particular cultural significance to the Maori as it is the source of the much valued greenstone or pounamu a type of jade valued for jewellery and tools. The Poutini Agreement was signed in 1989 setting out the role of each party in the mining of the Arahura and adjacent lands. Current exploration and development should extend the resource to allow mining to continue on the Poutini project for an additional three to five years at current gold prices. Production within new Zealand beyond this point may be compromised by increasing difficulty in gaining access to prospective areas within New Zealand, lowered margins due to high New Zealand dollar exchange rates and the overall lowering of alluvial headgrades throughout the West Coast and Otago/Southland regions. To counter these effects DML has continued to improve on operational efficiency and performance monitoring to optimise the mining practices used. This paper detains the background to the Poutini Project, the geology, plant and equipment used together with descriptions of the current mining methods employed.

MetPlant conferences have focused on ensuring mining projects are well designed then optimised to operate safely and effectively at the top end of world’s best practice to ensure shareholders are not just happy but delighted. This assumes the MetPlant was built right the first time. However, reality is, too often Plant Metallurgists (PlantMets) find after commissioning they are faced with the expensive task of correcting errors or modifying shortcomings to achieve product quality at name-plate capacity, i.e. get it right the second time. Why do companies spend good money to engineer an excellent feasibility study then allow “wise men” remote from the project team to impose cuts in budget and schedule, often under the guise of value engineering? Since mining is full of uncertainties, such actions can increase the risks of failure with the result that some MetPlants do not work well. Can PlantMets influence the remote wise men who often are also imposing the rules for lending and the required returns to appreciate the uncertainties of mining and their associated risks then let the project team get it right the first time? PlantMets can negotiate with the wise men from the outset of the project and bring them into an outer layer of the team where they can understand the risks then share responsibility and accountability to achieve the common goal of building a MetPlant which works well the first time and deliver the forecast profits. Since shareholders are not in the business to make losses they appoint a Board of Directors to deliver the best outcomes for the shareholders. The value created in any mining operation is a function of the mine plan. The quality of this plan is dependent on the strategies employed during definition drilling, resource estimation and mine planning. This paper presents opportunities to improve the value of an operation through better strategic management of these core activities. This paper uses a case study to demonstrate best practices techniques for predicting the contribution of gravity concentration in a gold recovery process flowsheet. The case study was selected as an example of an ore with a marginal gravity gold content, which makes the value of a gravity circuit difficult to quantify. In this instance the value of leveraging a significant knowledgebase of operating gravity circuit performance to support the decision making process was demonstrated. The extractive phase of broad-scale mining can have major impacts on landscapes and associated ecosystems. Post-mining ecological rehabilitation typically starts with reconstructing topography. A fairly common industry practice has been to use landform elements such as plateaus, terraces, and gentle slopes for stabilisation purposes. However, this approach can lead to the generation of fairly uniform landforms that do not necessarily reflect natural ecosystems. Previous research in undisturbed and agricultural landscapes shows that ecological attributes and diversity in microclimates is positively correlated with landform heterogeneity. An objective of this study was to investigate if those findings are still valid in post-mining rehabilitating landscapes on North Stradbroke Island, Queensland, Australia. We investigated the relationship between landform heterogeneity and status of ecological recovery. The landform heterogeneity is measured through variance in three landform characteristics (relief, slope, aspect) using remote-sensing data and the status of ecological recovery is represented by ecological indicators measured through field surveys. The results indicate strong correlations between landform heterogeneity indices and native vegetation species richness with sensitivity to the spatial scale of investigation. It is recognised that climate, substrate and rehabilitation practices act as primary drivers of rehabilitation success. However, the results indicate that, in some examples, landform heterogeneity (heterogeneity in relief and slope angles) contributes up to 30 to 50?per?cent of the variance in native vegetation species richness. While the primary drivers of ecological recovery are difficult to control over extensive areas and extended time periods, landform heterogeneity provides a tool to indirectly control the micro-environmental parameters to improve ecological recovery. Reducing the uncertainties in the choice of ecological and landform indices and the degree of landform heterogeneity suitable for particular rehabilitating landscapes would be site specific. The introduction of desired landform heterogeneity may provide a very effective tool for significant improvement in ecological rehabilitation across broad-scale post-mine landscapes, an outcome of benefit to industry, government and local communities.CITATION:Datar, A and Mulligan,?D,?2014.
