Virtual reality (VR) simulators represent a powerful tool for training humans to perform tasks which are otherwise expensive or dangerous to duplicate in the real world. The idea is not new. Flight simulators have been used for decades to train pilots for both commercial and military aviation. These systems have advanced to a point that they are integral to both the design and the operation of modern aircraft (Adams, Klowden and Hannaford, 2001; Mastaglio and Callahan, 1995). This technology has been successfully extended and utilised in the mining industry in a range of successful applications (Bise, 1997; Denby and Schofield, 1999a; Schofield, 2005; Henning et al, 2002; Kaiser, Vasak and Suorineni, 2005). There are a number of lessons that can be learned from other industries that have successfully utilised virtual technology for a number of years. Specific rules of thumb regarding the specification, development, application and operation of these simulators can be garnered from other industrial training systems and examined in a minerals industry context (Tromp and Schofield, 2004; Schofield, 2006). This paper intends to discuss some of these generic rules in the context of a number of recently developed virtual reality mining applications.

Project managers must juggle many aspects to bring their project in on time, on budget, and in accordance with the aims of the project owner. Whether the project is a mining feasibility study, a technology implementation or a construction project, it falls to the project manager and his or her team to deal with risk from two standpoints, which may be at odds with one another. First, a project team must deal with risks to the project itself û that is, risks to on-time, on-spec and on-budget delivery against the value promise made to the customer. Second, there is the management of risks within the subject matter of the project, undertaken on behalf of the customer. The project manager cannot dodge this responsibility; yet there is a tendency (particularly in smaller, in-house studies) to avoid digging too deep, possibly for fear of what may be uncovered! This paper investigates the responsibilities of project teams in regard to risk management and reporting. It examines ownership of project risk; the nature of risk management activities undertaken by the team during the course of a project; and outlines some controls to ensure that the two opposing arms of project risk are reconciled for the benefit of both the project team and the project owner.

Most new engineers in the mining industry do not realise the importance of legal obligations. During investigations the first question you are asked is: Do you have any proof or evidence? The smallest detail in an underground notebook or a diary entry is able to be used as your proof and/or evidence. The importance of a paper trail is often undervalued and overlooked when you first enter the industry. As a new engineer, all too often your legal obligations, including your duty of care are not given enough consideration. Whose job is it to inform you of what your legal obligations are and when do they end? Everyone has legal obligations at every level of the industry, from graduate to mine manager. The level of these responsibilities varies depending on the position that you hold. When you first start in the industry you need to understand what your responsibilities are and how you are expected to discharge them, whether they are memos, databases or senior sign-offs, etc. In order to fulfil your obligations you must first discharge your own obligation, which in turn discharges those of your department and ultimately those of the mine. As a graduate engineer in the mining industry what I have learnt about my own legal obligations has come directly from my own experience, which will form the basis of this paper.

The use of column flotation cells for recovery of phosphate is becoming more common practice in certain parts of the world (Brazil, Russia) where igneous phosphate ores are processed. Igneous phosphates are generally finer grained (< 200µm) than some of the traditional sedimentary phosphates (<400µm). Australian phosphate from the Georgina basin is sedimentary, but has a much finer grain size (typically < 106µm) than similar deposits in North Africa and the USA.In 2013, Arianne Phosphate completed a bankable feasibility study for the development of their igneous phosphate deposit at the Lac a Paul site in Quebec. Initially, lab test work and bench scale piloting indicated that using traditional mechanical flotation would be able to produce adequate concentrate grade and an economic level of recovery, but would necessitate the installation of a complex and operationally challenging flotation circuit. Later pilot plant testing using column cells resulted in a significant reduction in process complexity and facilitated the processing of the -20µm ore fraction which resulted in a 10% increase in P2O5 recovery and a 5% increase in concentrate grade %P2O5.Flotation column testing achieved a concentrate grade of 38.6% P2O5 at a P2O5 recovery of 90%. Using a mechanical flotation cell circuit, the concentrate grade was 36.4% P2O5 with a P2O5 recovery of only 78.8%. A noticeable feature of the testing was the simplicity of the column flotation circuit configuration (Rougher + 2 stages of cleaning + Cleaner Scavenger) compared to the mechanical flotation cell circuit (Rougher + Scavenger + 3 stages of cleaning).The financial benefit for this case study was estimated using a sales price of US$ 195/t FOB for a 38.6% P2O5 product, and an assumed cost of production of US$ 95/t, the netback price is calculated at US$100/t. For a daily milling rate of 55,000t/d, the improved flotation performance provides additional concentrate production of 1,203t/d. Using the netback price calculated above, this calculates to additional gross profit of US$ 120,260/d.Annualised, this equals US$ 40.7 million in additional revenue for a similar or reduced CAPEX.The use of column flotation on fine grained phosphate ore types often requires fine grinding and desliming to liberate the phosphate value, such as the Australian sedimentary phosphate ores. Metallurgical process control systems in mineral plants often employ state-of-the-art monitoring analysers in an attempt to optimise plant operations and enhance mineral recoveries. These systems are unfortunately invariably fed by simplistic ‘sampling’ designs consisting of various in-stream methods or pressurised probes. These are unfortunate compromises and provide a false picture of what a mineral flotation or other process can achieve. The situation is further aggravated by some manufacturers using misleading marketing to suggest discrete cross-stream methods for metallurgical accounting and unreliable continuous in-stream off-takes for control sampling and that they are of synonymous integrity.Reliable, absolute or representative samples are often absent in many modern day concentrator plants, due to compromises around sample taking, particularly in terms of delineation and extraction errors and thus leading to sample bias. For more reliable information from online analysers we need a continuous, but much more reliable sample taken, than is current practice.Online analysers require a fully proportional and continuous supply of sample for effective process control, otherwise maximised or benchmark recoveries will be nothing but a pipe dream. Large discrete cross-stream samples from mechanically less reliable equipment cannot be used as feed to online analysers, as it will negatively impact real-time feedback and efficient process control.It is possible to build correct sampling systems that could do both process controls online and metallurgical accounting at the same time. Multotec Process Equipment (Pty) Limited, in close association with experienced sampling consultant Francis Pitard, have jointly patented a concept to achieve this and which is embodied in the design of the unique Rotating Cone® Sampler (International Patent Application No. PCT/IB2016/057464). This presentation opens with a definition of technology and how it is implemented. The expenditure and progress on R&D in the mining industry is then investigated and found to be difficult to quantify. The needs and interests of that industry including contribution to this Congress are examined and it is concluded that short-term rather than long-term goals seem to be prevalent. The presentation concludes with the opinion that the answer to the question in the title is both affirmative and negative but overall there is a need for the mining industry to become more innovative.

The authors have undertaken many independent mine optimisation and operational improvement projects at Australian and international mining operations over the past decade. This work has provided an understanding of the underlying practices responsible for the good long-term performance of some operations, and the failure of others to achieve their objectives. Good long-term performance, and value creation can be achieved through a logical and rigorous process of identifying the optimal mine plan (æThe PlanÆ) that delivers the corporate goals, establishing appropriate performance measures that are aligned with these goals, and ongoing monitoring of compliance with the established targets to ensure the operation reliably achieves The Plan. A number of practical methods have been developed and implemented to assist mining operations deliver their corporate goals. This paper outlines some of these methods, providing some fundamental guidelines that will assist in the establishment, and reliable achievement of The Plan that delivers the corporate goals.

The only economically significant deposit of dolomite in New Zealand is at Mount Burnett, in north-west Nelson. The dolomite, associated with marbles and schists, is complexly deformed, and is of Paleozoic age.A very large quantity is present, although the recoverable amount is to some extent limited by the difficult terrain.Physically the quality of the dolomite is excellent. It is a tough, durable, fine grained rock. Chemically it is a little more variable. The range and frequency o~ the more important impurities are illustrated by hlstograms, as is the "dolomite factor"-a measure of the amount of the mineral dolomite in the rock. lbe dolomite factor averages 84 per cent, the remainder of the rock consisting largely of calcite. Quarrying, milling, production, and uses are described. In 1966 production reached 13,250 tons.

The use of dolomite as a refractory began in England about 1870 when the basic Bessemer process for the removal of phosphorus from steel was developed by Thomas and Gilchrist.Knowledge of dolomite as a refractory in this country goes back to the early part of this century, at the time when the Hoskins Brothers took over the Lithgow Iron and Steel Works from W. Sandford. The practice then was toimport burned dolomite in casks from England. It is reported that much of the material was powdered when received, but was still serviceable. The earliest. used sources of local stone were in the Bathurst and Mudgee areas of New South Wales, and these dolomites were first used raw. Later, dolomite was burned in cupolas at Havilah near Mudgee, coke being obtained from the South Coast of New South Wales. This plant supplied burned dolomite to the Lithgow steel plant, later to the Australil1n Iron and Steel plant at Port Kembla, and also to the electric steel furnaces at Newcastle, Sydney and Melbourne until the plant was closed down in 1946.The Broken Hill Proprietary Company first obtained its dolomite from George's Plains near Bathurst (this was, really a magnesium limestone) and later from Mount Knowles, a deposit near Mudgee, which was eventually taken over by the CO:plpany in 1918. Don Hausen was a pioneer in the field of quantitative mineralogy. Methodology that he developed at Newmont almost 40 years ago is still employed today, only the technology has advanced. Petrographic methods were stressed with an emphasis on alteration, mineralisation and paragenesis. Methodologies employed by Don on the Carlin deposit were applied to developing the Carlin Trend by helping to work out lithology and structure, which ultimately led to the discovery of deep high-grade deposits. Quantitative methods used by Don on San Manuel, Copper Creek and Superior, Arizona were applied to the development of the Batu Hijau Deposit in Indonesia. Advancements in technology since DonÆs time have made the mineralogist much more efficient. Manual measurement of peak heights off of strip charts for semiquantitative XRD has been replaced by software that does Rietveld refinement and whole pattern fitting. Hand contouring of XRD data has been replaced by digitised data incorporated into geologic models. Optical point counting, which would take a dayÆs work to process 1000 points, has been replaced by automated SEM methods where 20 000 points are possible in an hour. The use of the optical microscope remains relatively unchanged, and still remains as Don emphasised the æeyesÆ of mineral exploration. However, the information can be relayed much more quickly with digital image capture and electronic data transfer. Don insisted on becoming involved in projects at the grassroots level and supporting the project through mine closure. This made the mineralogist a liaison between exploration geologists, mine geologists, metallurgists and mine engineers. The methodology that Don helped develop continues to provide invaluable support to Newmont geologists and metallurgists worldwide today.

In 1985 a 2.5-tonne top blown rotary converter was installed in the silver refinery at Cominco's Trail Operation to carry out the final cupellation of burndown metal to Dore metal. The furnace is fired with an oxygen-natural gas lance which is capable of achieving a variety of furnace conditions, varying from reducing to highly oxidizing. Reaction rates are about 4 times greater than using conventional cupel furnaces. The faster reaction rates improve productivity and reduce in-process precious metal tie-up. The furnace is also used to reduce litharge slag for bismuth recovery.

Underground mechanized excavation in New Zealand has become more commonplace in civil and mining applications during the last three years. At one stage up to seven Dosco Road- header machines were being used on different projects around the country. The Huntly West Mine Drifts inclined at one in four were by far the most severe grade conditions that the machines were subjected to; however, other operations posed their own particular problems for the machines. Two major interrelated factors became evident as soon as the machines commenced at Huntly. These were traction problems on the grade and control of water, particularly on the invert.

Until recently the Corus IJmuiden pellet plant produced approximately 4.5 Mtpa of pellets. Corus IJmuiden is currently running a program to increase its pig iron production to 6.4 million tonnes HM per annum. The burden of the Corus IJmuiden blast furnaces consists of approximately 50 per cent high basicity sinter and 50 per cent acid pellets, both produced in-house. To accommodate the increased pig iron production, the capacity of the pellet plant needed to be increased to 5.0 Mtpa. The productivity was increased by modifications to the plant layout, which were implemented during the 2006 cold maintenance stop. In addition, the composition of the ore blends is optimised to gain productivity.

The Wharekirauponga (WKP) epithermal gold-silver deposit is located about 10 km north of Waihi in the Hauraki Goldfield east of Auckland. WKP is notable for its sheeted to stockwork quartz veins hosted in rhyolitic rocks, that have attracted exploration interest as a low grade, bulk tonnage exploration target. Exploration between 1978 and 1993 included 23 diamond drill holes totalling 5505 m. The mineralisation occurs in a rhyolite dome complex (Miocene), consisting of flow-banded rhyolite and rhyolitic pyroclastic rocks, with minor andesite. Fifty four drill core samples were collected from six exploration drill holes and analysed by semiquantitative XRD techniques. Hydrothermal alteration of the rhyolitic and andesitic rocks has developed secondary mineral assemblages of quartz, adularia, albite, chlorite, illite, sericite, interlayered illite-smectite, carbonate, halloysite and pyrite. The main zone of mineralisation is characterised by quartzadularia alteration, which grades oiItward to quartz-clay (illite, local halloysite and/or interlayered illite-smectite) alteration. Propylitic alteration is present at the southern end of the drilled area of the prospect. Depth-related changes in mineralogy include a decrease in illite and appearance and increase in quantity of chlorite with increasing depth, and the localisation of halloysite and interlayered illite-smectite in the shallow parts of some drill holes.

In addition to volatile commodity prices influencing decision making, in recent years, social and environmental performance have become important decision drivers within the mining industry. There are increased demands from stakeholders, communities, and governments to ensure that raw materials are mined, processed and refined responsibly. The industry also faces the challenge of better managing its waste, which has led to severe consequences when not done properly. The high commodity prices of the late 90s and early 2000s encouraged larger economies of scale and drove mining companies to extract large volumes of rock for separation and concentration at the downstream processes. Over time, as ore grades dropped, the cost of mining escalated and tailings volumes grew. This arduous process also caused strains on recovery cost and performance. Scarcity of water and energy resources coupled with increased production demands and higher operating costs are putting pressure on companies to find innovative ways to increase mining intensities. Hatch’s value chain optimisation methodologies, specifically Grade Engineering® and early waste rejection of the mine, have been of interest to intensify operational performance and minimise waste generation. Enabling preconcentration of the plant throughput, the methodology has significant potential to improve overall metal production and reduce water and energy intensities, whilst minimising wet tailings. Using representative data from real world mines, this paper reports on a case study that evaluates the impact of preconcentration using sensor-based ore sorting on downstream process improvements as well as energy, water and tailings reduction. Financial and economic viability of this technique is presented for both brownfield and greenfield implementation cases. The results show that business case for preconcentration is best when: the distribution of metal in the run of mine ore is negatively skewed and left tailed; mining costs are low; energy, water and tailings management costs are high; and low cost methods of recovering pay metal from low grade material are available.

The exercise of preparing this paper has been both enjoyable and thought provoking.In carrying out the research I have spoken and written to many people. Without exception they have been eager to help, all have spoken of the high regard in which they held Dr Williams, not only as a metallurgist but also as a person.Review of GK's life reveals an enormous impact on the industry in which he worked and the people with whom he associated. Consideration of this impact inevitably leads to the question "what can we learn from his life and the way he went about his work?"

Froth flotation is one of the most widely used beneficiation processes for fine and ultrafine coals and minerals. Maintaining optimal metallurgical performance in industrial flotation operation is still a challenging task owing to the lack of an effective tool to diagnose the flotation performance in realtime. For this purpose, a number of flotation performance monitoring systems with different working principles have been developed to provide instant feedback for process control and optimisation. In this paper, for the first time, five different flotation performance monitoring systems were systematically compared through an on-site trial in a coking coal flotation plant in Queensland, Australia. The monitoring systems were used to measure (i) gas holdup, (ii) overflowing froth velocity, (iii) overflowing froth height, (iv) air recovery and (v) drag force exerted by overflowing froth, in an industrial flotation column and the outputs of these systems were collected simultaneously at a wide range of operating conditions. For each monitoring system, the best regression model describing the correlation between the system output and the flotation performance was selected from various regression models (eg linear, quadratic, power-law and logarithmic) using the Akaike information criterion (AIC). A comparison of the coefficient of determination (R2 ), residual sum of squares (RSS) and measuring accuracy at 95 per cent confidence level of the best regression models of these monitoring systems suggested that the drag sensor outperformed the other systems at a wide range of flotation operating conditions. The superior performance of the drag sensor was attributed to its distinctive design that enabled intimate sensing of variation of the overflowing froth properties. Furthermore, the drag sensor had the ability to monitor feed ash content variation when the other operation variables were set almost constant.

Past experience has shown that the automation of the dragline swing motion requires real time monitoring of the bucket position. A current project at the Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE) is aiming to achieve this using machine vision. The hardware platform is a Datacube MaxVideo 200 system. The images are obtained by a fixed camera installed on the dragline boom. The field of view is large enough to include the bucket in all possible configurations. Standard chain coding and run-length coding algorithms are used to process the video image. The three-dimensional bucket position is calculated by combining the output of the machine vision system with the rope length data obtained from transducers installed on drag and hoist drums. This information is then fed into a control computer which takes corrective action to suppress bucket oscillations before they reach dangerous levels.

Open cut mining in Australia is facing the greatest challenge in its history in attempting to compete not only with other operations internationally, but also with underground operations domestically. Most flat dip and shallow depth surface-mineable coal reserves have been depleted during the last two decades and new open cut operations must extract deeper coal deposits. As open cut coal mines move into deeper areas and the stripping ratios increase, the relative cost of overburden removal also increases. It therefore becomes even more important to design the mine around the optimum overburden removal scheme. The deeper mines are usually multi-seam operations with a more complex geology and with more geotechnical and hydrological problems. Deeper mines are subjected to greater problems requiring more detailed mine planning and design, such as selection of the optimum mining method and pit layout. In planning and design of such operations, the number of alternative methods which need to be considered is consequently greater.Dragline productivity and its stripping capabilities are directly affected by the selection of digging method, strip layout and pit geometry. Every mine has a unique combination of geological conditions. The operating methods that work well at one mine may not necessarily work at another site. Selection of an optimal stripping method, strip layout and pit geometry for a given dragline must be considered with respect to the geological conditions of the mine. With increasing geological complexity of Australian strip mines, it is becoming more important to use sophisticated techniques such as computerised mine planning methods to assist in optimising dragline operations.
