Steelmaking slags are usually used as roadbed and civil engineering materials. However, the expansion phenomenon, which is caused by the volume expansion during hydration of free CaO and free MgO contained in steelmaking slag, is indispensable. Since the hydration of free MgO in steelmaking slag is much slower than that of free CaO, it is qualitatively considered that free MgO contributes to the hydration expansion of steelmaking slag over a long period of time. Similar to free CaO, free MgO consists of undissolved MgO and crystallised MgO in steelmaking slag. The latter precipitates during slag cooling. When divalent metal oxides (FeO, MnO, CaO) are dissolved in the crystallised MgO to form a MgO-based solid solution, it is expected to inhibit the hydration reaction similar to precipitated CaO. From the previous hydration test of Magnesioferrite, which was calcined after mixing MgO and Fe2O3 reagents, it was found that the higher the Fe2O3 concentration, the slower the hydration reaction progressed. In this study, by clarifying the influence of calcination conditions of MgO-FeO and MgO-FeO-MnO solid solutions, which were prepared by the calcination of mixture of MgO, FeO and MnO reagents, on their hydration reactivity, the effect of composition and thermal treatment on the formation of free MgO that is not hydrated (or easily hydrated) were discussed. To investigate the influence of MgO grain size, coarse MgO particles, which were obtained by crushing MgO crucible, were also used for heat treatment. With increasing the amount of FeO and MnO in the MgO-FeO-MnO solid solution, the hydration reaction became more suppressed. The expansion suppression effect was higher with solid-solved FeO than with solidsolved MnO. When the calcination temperature of the MgO-FeO solid solution was increased, the Fe3+/Fe2+ concentration ratio increased, resulting in a higher hydration rate.

The effect of stresses and acoustic emissions on the gas permeability of coal was investigated in the field and the laboratory in order to find an estimative method of the practicability of gas drainage. In the field, acoustic emissions and gas emissions during gas drainage drilling were monitored tentatively at some coal mines in Japan and China.In the laboratory, acoustic emissions from coal specimens in addition to gas permeability were measured during the triaxial compression loading in order to interpret the results monitored in the field. Besides, the opening of gas permeation channels in coal was considered on the basis of the experimental results.

Slope stability has now become a practical tool in the design and oper- ation of open pits. The stability of rock slope depends on many factors, including not only structural geology, the existence of weak layers, ground- water, blasting and weathering, but also the virgin stress field. This paper presents an application of a numerical method to investigate the effect of the virgin stress on slope stability. The finite element method is employed to simulate the excavation of open pits. Redistributed stress fields in the slope of open pit are computed for several different virgin stress fields. Based on the redistributed stress fields, the shear force which tends to produce sliding of a rock mass and the frictional resistance to sliding are evaluated. The possibility of potential failure is assessed by the limit equilibrium method. The combination of the finite element method with the equilibrium method provides a powerful analytical tool for slope stability. The significant effect of virgin stress on the stability of slopes is shown by studying a typical case.

"Work in CSIRO with several Australian ores has shown that?by heating a high-phosphorus goethitic iron ore and then leaching with caustic or acid, the phosphorus levels in the ore can be lowered to a commercially acceptable value of around 0.08 weight per cent phosphorus (P). With increasing heating temperatures up to 1300¦C, the extent of phosphorus removal increased. This is considered to be associated with mineralogical changes in the iron oxide phases in the ore during the heating.Little phosphorus was removed from four high-phosphorus goethitic iron ores containing 0.12 - 0.16 weight per cent P in leaches with boiling water. However, leaches with sulfuric acid removed ten to 20 weight per cent of the phosphorus and leaching with sodium hydroxide removed even more phosphorus to produce leach products containing between 0.08 and 0.12 weight per cent P from three of the ores.After heating at 300¦C, leaches at a low pulp density of 0.5 weight per cent solids with 1 - 5 M NaOH and 0.1 - 1 M H2SO4 gave leach products with 0.06 - 0.09 weight per cent P. The lixiviant concentration required and extent of phosphorus removal depended on the ore. At a higher pulp density of 25 weight per cent solids, leach residues with between 0.07 - 0.14 weight per cent P were obtained.More phosphorus was removed from ores heated at 900¦C. Leaches at both the low and high pulp densities, with 1 - 5 M NaOH and 0.1 - 1 M H2SO4, gave leach products with 0.05 - 0.09 weight per cent P. However, the lowest phosphorus levels were obtained after heating the ores at 1200 or 1300¦C and leaching with 1 M NaOH or 0.1 M H2SO4. Leach residues with 0.02 - 0.06 weight per cent P were obtained, even from leaches at the higher pulp density of 25 weight per cent solids. Leaching tests on heated samples under heap leaching conditions at ambient temperatures have shown that phosphorus levels can be reduced to similar levels to that achieved in an agitation leach within ten days.CITATION:Fisher-White, M J, Lovel, R R, Sparrow, G J and Washington, B M, 2013. In most of the literature, the hydrocyclone is viewed as a black box in which only global variables are present and where the equations are obtained by curve fitting. Recently some work has appeared where the Navier Stokes equations are solved numerically in the hydrocyclone geometry. However, in all of these works the air core surface, which has an important influence on the hydrocyclone dynamical behaviour, is modelled as being a cylindrical surface of fixed radius. In this work, we model the surface of the air core as a free-boundary which has to satisfy a jump condition, the Young-Laplace equation, relating the physics to the geometry. Based on this model, we are able to explain, qualitatively, some phenomena that have puzzled research workers in the field for many years, and can show, through the air core behaviour, the influence of material parameters on the performance of the hydrocyclone.

This research is to grope for a method to reduce high pore pressure taking place on tunnel shotcrete lining, especially in underwater tunnels, effectively by utilising a new concept of patternised pin drain. Accordingly, the patternised pin drain system is investigated numerically in order to confirm to the effect of reduction of pore pressure by the pin drain and its effective application. Installation of pin drain shows considerable reduction in the figure of pore pressure. It is found through 2D numerical modelling that the change of pore pressure, according to the shape and the location of pin drain, is sensitive by the sequences of the change of location > the change of length > the change of angle degree. In the results of investigation in 3D modelling, the pore pressure is the largest in the centre of the interval among pin drains, and it is possible to obtain an ideal degree of longitudinal angle and an interval by investigating pore pressure taking place on the lining.

It is well known that the high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) can only be operated efficiently under choke feeding conditions in which a material bed is built up between the rollers to ensure interparticle breakage. By increasing the fines amount in the material bed up to a specific level with the recycling load, a uniform material bed is created and higher pressure gradient along the roller width is obtained which results in compact flakes including more fines. Extensive test work has been carried out with an industrial HPGR unit grinding cement clinker in a cement plant in Turkey. During the test work the recycling load of the circuit was changed to achieve different ratios to the fresh feed rate in order to identify the effect of the recycling load on the circuit performance. Six different tests were performed with the circuit at steady state. For each test, samples were collected from HPGR fresh feed and discharge, and total feed, then the particle size distributions of the samples were determined and mass balances around the circuit were calculated. The conclusion was that the reduction ratio of the HPGR increased with increase in recycling load. The flake densities showed the same trend with more compacted flakes being produced for higher recycling loads.

The effect of titania (TiO2 ) addition on the sintering performance of hematite iron ore has been studied by doping pure TiO2 into a sinter blend. The results of laboratory-scale compact sintering tests confirmed the considerable effect of TiO2 addition on sinter strength and mineralogy. The tumble index measurements confirmed an improvement in the strength of the sinter in response to TiO2 addition. The melting point of the sinter was also affected by increasing the TiO2 content, indicating a possible relationship between coke breeze consumption and TiO2 on industrial-scale sintering of Ti-bearing ores. Analysis of the sintered structures using optical and scanning electron microscopes confirmed a general improvement in the overall pore structure and sinter melt characteristics with the addition of TiO2 to the sinter blend. An important feature of the sinter structure was the formation of a perovskite phase (CaTiO3 ) and an increase in the proportion of this phase in the structure as TiO2 levels increase.CITATION:Dehghan-Manshadi, A, Manuel, J, Hapugoda, S, Ware, N and Donskoi, E, 2015. This work investigates some suggested methods for blast vibration monitoring on a hard surface based on 53 tests on a vibration exciter. Errors in the measurement attributable to coupling have been described as function of frequency by the rock-to-mount (or coupling) transmissibility, ie ratio of the velocity of the vibration sensor mount to the velocity of the rock motion. Transmissibility has been measured from 2 to 200 Hz, at two vibration levels (5 and 20 mm/s), in four seismographs. Attachment methods with an anchor, thermal adhesive and gypsum plaster allow stiff rock-to-mount coupling. They ensure accurate measurements (errors below 0.3 dB) for frequencies commonly found in blasting (below 100 Hz) irrespective of the mount characteristics and the vibration level. Free laid mounts and sandbagged vibration sensors lead generally to a poor, weak coupling. Errors are non-linear errors with the input velocity, ie the operating frequency window narrows as the velocity of the ground increases. Free mounts follow ground motion acceptably well (error up to 0.4 dB) at both vibration levels and frequencies below 15 Hz. At higher frequencies, free mounts lead to the largest distortions with expected errors ranging from 0.8 to 6.6 dB. Sandbagging limits the expected errors below 1.3 dB, but it does not prevent large errors that can be up to 4.5 dB. This paper presents a method for estimating the strength and stability of model coal pillars with bedding planes (weakness planes) inclination. The strength of coal relative to the angular difference between the principal stress direction and bedding planes is considered. The failure behaviour of model coal pillars containing weakness plane inclination by using servo-control Schenck Machine are shown. Uniaxial and triaxial compressive strength of coal specimens are investigated, and test results indicated that the strength of coal pillars depends on the weakness planes inclination with respect to the principal stress direction. However, it is shown that with increasing confining pressure, the effect of weakness planes inclination on the strength of the coal specimens is reduced. An empirical method is given for prediction the compressive strength of coal containing weakness planes inclination. The results of this method are compared with the experimental results and Jaeger theory. Finally, three well-known empirical strength criteria were tested against the triaxial test data for coal containing weakness planes inclination.

Of all of the processes in the mining cycle, blasting has the greatest impact on the efficiency of both mining itself and the initial stages of ore processing. The cost of blasting can be readily accounted for, but the true benefits of an effective blasting operation are seldom measured or reported. This means that blasting is seldom optimised in terms of its overall economic impact on an operation. Blasting operations have evolved according to the environment provided by mine management. Most operations seek to minimise the unit cost of each component process (overburden removal, blasting, excavation and transport, crushing or grinding) without recognising the impact that blasting performance has on subsequent activities. The creation of æcost centresÆ or æmanagement unitsÆ that isolate blasting from its downstream impacts reinforce this trend. Modern blasting technology is regarded as sophisticated by virtue of the mechanical design of the drills, the chemistry of the explosives and the flexibility and reliability of modern blast initiation systems. However, blast performance is controlled by the nature of the rock mass and there is generally an inadequate appreciation of how blast designs should be tailored to suit different rock mass conditions or to meet different blasting objectives. Most operations utilise a limited suite of standard designs without routinely tailoring designs to suit the actual conditions at hand or the objectives of each blast. Mining operations would benefit from tackling the following specific challenges:What is the appropriate target performance for blasting operations to generate the maximum economic benefit for the operation as a whole? How should designs be configured to suit the changing rock mass conditions and operating constraints? What compromise (if any) should be allowed from the ideal to assist conflicting scheduling or other operational requirements? How can blast performance be measured and reported to provide appropriate guidance to future operations? These challenges can be tackled through the process of æblast engineeringÆ. This paper discusses the potential impact of blasting performance on the economics of mining operations and the author argues that very considerable benefits over and above those currently being achieved could be realised by improving the routine engineering of mine blasts. The paper then explores how the industryÆs failure to recognise the economic importance of blasting has resulted in the engineering of blasting operations receiving less management and technical support than is appropriate. Finally, a simple approach to the engineering of routine blasting operations is described as an example of how these challenges can be tackled.

This paper addresses project commissioning, that is, activities that culminate in the transfer of a project from the construction phase to routine plant operation. These activities should be initiated early in the engineering and design phase to ensure that the plant design is operator friendly and that construction is scheduled such that pre-operational testing and hand over to the owner occurs in a timely and cost-effective manner. For the purposes of this paper, commissioning includes all activities related to pre-operational testing, no-load testing, water commissioning, and ore commissioning. That is, all activities from construction completion to practical completion of the prime contract. This process is facilitated in numerous ways dependent on the nature of the project prime contract and the size of the project. For small lump sum projects, the contractor's responsibility may include all phases of commissioning to practical completion, whereas, a managing contractor on a complex multi-contract project may only be required to bring the project to mechanical completion and hand over to the owner for ore commissioning. The extraction and transport of coal from underground coal mines can result in significant liberation of coal and/or silica dust into the mine atmosphere. Mine operators have long used ventilating air as a primary means of diluting generated dust, removing dust from the working faces and preventing dust from reaching the minersÆ working environment. As production levels have increased, mine operators continue to be challenged in maintaining dust concentrations below compliance levels. The need for maximising the effectiveness of available ventilating air in conjunction with other effective controls, such as water sprays and dust collectors, continues to be critical to the long-term health of mine workers. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted full-scale laboratory and mine-site research to evaluate improved application of dust controls for both longwall and continuous mining methods. A summary of recent research results and recommended practices will be provided.

Effective domaining is fundamental to geostatistical modelling for grade control. Through analysis of lithological, structural and alteration logging data, effective groupings (domains) can be identified and employed for estimation or simulation purposes.The poor definition of domains can adversely affect the grade control model resulting in a misinterpretation of the optimal ore-waste boundary and ultimately reduces the quality of recovered ore. The implementation of an appropriate domaining strategy is therefore expected to improve recovery and reconciliation.A thorough understanding of the geology of the deposit and adequate sample data is required for selecting domains. For new deposits, a resource drill database and resource model may be the only information available. Where extension to a previous operation is taking place, historic grade control, mapping and exposed geology may be used to improve domain selection. Preconceptions about domains, should they exist, need to be re-evaluated and tested to ensure they are fit for the purposes of grade control.While mining progresses, the domain model is re-evaluated to ensure that the previous interpretation is still suitable for the present configuration and geology. The grade control process, being iterative, lends itself to regular review and continuous improvement as further data is collected during the grade control cycle. Regular updates to the geology model, mapping, geostatistical data analysis and review of variography will provide indications of a changing domaining environment.Narrow vein gold deposits, which may have several factors influencing mineralisation, present considerable domaining challenges. For utilization of solid carbonaceous materials produced in processes of cracking heavy oil, such as petroleum pitch, as powder fuel, it is necessary to develop a process for fine grinding of these materials. It is known that grinding' additives are effective for fine grinding of cohesive and heat-sensitive materials such as petroleum pitch, therefore in this study, effective methods for fine grinding of petroleum pitch with some grinding additives were investigated. Experiments were carried out by using comminution kinetics based on mass balance. From the results of the investigation by using a batch ball mill, it was found that sodium stearate, calcium stearate and carbon black were effective additives for the improvement of grinding efficiency. Optimum concentration of the grinding additives was also found to give a required particle size of products. Concerning to the action mechanism of these additives, it is considered that the additives which adhired to, or were absorbed on the surface of petroleum pitch particles not only prevented cohesion of the particles but improved dispersion of the particles as well. From the results of the investigation by using a laboratory screen mill which is a representative built-in classifiered impact crusher, carbon black was found to be an effective additive for the improvement of grinding efficiency and mill performance. It is also considered that the improvement of classification efficiency by carbon black affected the mill performance.

The interest of industry, in particular future mining, is pointing towards the use of novel visualisation systems to improve the operational efficiency of user interfaces. While the technologies used to enhance operators’ experience are advancing, the implementation of novel visualisation paradigms within mining operations is trailing behind other industries, particularly health and aviation. In this work, we present a number of initiatives and use cases of immersive virtual and augmented reality systems that can fit within the mining context. These ideas represent a step towards new platforms that might increase the efficiency and safety of mining operations through applications such as 3D panoramic video monitoring technology with annotated information coming from big data analytics and visual analytics processing engines. However, while the technologies are used in a variety of training settings, their application in the working environment is lagging behind. This paper presents examples of scientific visualisations that could be applied in a mining context to extend the possibilities of operators’ cognitive abilities and working efficiency.
