The paper briefly discusses the benefits to proponents of a formal environmental assessment process. It is argued that any process should be fair, cost effective and efficient, involve all affected parties, and should identify important issues at an early stage. The paper outlines the procedure used in Victoria, and the ways in which it attempts to address the above criteria.In conclusion the paper discusses progress towards a national approach to Environmental Impact Assessment. This is currently being pursued by the Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council.

In the last two years the Commission for the Environment has received four Environmental Impact Reports (EIR) for Audit and has been or is involved with at least four environmental impact assessments (EIA) related to mining. The EIRs have included Weavers Coal Mine, the Monowai-Maratoto mining proposal, the Martha Hill mine and the Wainui Road Mill. The EIAs are related mainly to coal fields in the Waikato but also included a further EIA on Martha Hill.

Coal mining reclamation is a worldwide concern. This paper presents a Brazilian example where the economic aspects of reclamation are considered. The basic goal of the study is to transform the reclamation procedures into an economic process by integrating the use of land after reclamation and developing profitable post operations. Some of the activities considered in this case study include: using of the coal pit as a landfill, considering appropriate landfill design and construction; using the area for forest development; and developing grassland, forests of native species and the construction of ponds for fishery. This study will conclude that the mined area is: capable of storing large quantities of waste at a competitive cost and at a low environmental risk; commercial forest development is economically feasible; and the lakes and other reclaimed areas can be integrated into the landscape creating a fresh water supply and an area to raise cattle.

Mineral sands make up only 3% of the value of mineral production in WA. However, the distribution of mining operations, close to the more highly populated south-west coastal areas, and the wide range of land-tenures and land-uses involved has resulted in the most complex range of regulatory procedures found anywhere in the State's mining industry.Mineral sands are mined on private agricultural and "minerals-to-owner" land, State forests, nature reserves, coastal reserves and vacant Crown land. Local Government authorities, State Government departments and private landholders can, depending on the land tenure, be involved in setting the environmental conditions for mining operations and supervising subsequent rehabilitation. In the past, rehabilitation was predominantly aimed at establishing an agricultural land-use after mining; however, it is now necessary for mining companies to rehabilitate mined areas to a much wider range of end land-uses.

After the processing operation, with the concentrates extracted, what is left behind generally is a wet material in suspension form, which may or may not contain reagents harmful to the environment. The amount of waste generated in any of the mining processes is large, in fact, the mining industry is the largest generator of solid waste in Australia. In order to minimise the waste generated within the industry it has become of interest to handle the particulate fluid wastes, or suspensions, at high concentrations, thus removing water and some of the reagents which may be harmful to the environment. The resultant highly concentrated suspension is a non-Newtonian fluid. Rheology deals with the flow of non-Newtonian fluids; therefore a combination of rheological understanding of high density suspensions, in conjunction with an understanding of the environmental problems being faced by the mining industry, can and has led to improved methods of waste disposal in the industry, ie waste minimisation. To operate a mine in California requires compliance with State environmental regulations, including assessment of risks and associated financial assurances for postulated worst case catastrophic event scenarios. Carson Hill Gold Mine, an open pit, heap leach operation, completed new risk assessment catastrophic event analyses in 1988. The risk assessment was performed at the same time that a new leach site (Leach Site 3) was being designed. Leach Site 3 is located about 400 m upslope of New Melones Reservoir, which is a public recreation facility and a source of drinking water. Release of leachate (pregnant solution) or ore containing cyanide and metals from Leach Site 3 into New Melones Reservoir was considered to pose the largest risk of environmental damage.Flow failure of the ore heap, potentially induced as a result of liquefaction of the saturated portion of the ore, and/or overtopping of the leach site containment embankment due to excessive precipitation were found to be the most plausible leachate release scenarios. Yearly combined probabilities of various downstream release volumes were estimated. The release volume corresponding to a yearly probability of 0.05 percent was then used to estimate potential environmental impacts and mitigation costs. The costs include earthwork to restore the geometry of the ore heap and repair the fill slope below the Leach Site 3 containment, and impacts on New Melones Reservoir.

The rapid industrialisation in China has consumed large amounts of various industrial raw materials, which has left behind large quantities of industrial solid wastes produced from the processes of mining, mineral processing and smelting. The storage of huge quantities of industrial solid wastes is an obvious risk to the environment and human well-being. As the first step to fully appreciate the scale of this risk, it is necessary to carry out research for developing a pollution source environmental risk assessment system (PSERAS), especially for the typical staple industrial solid waste (TSISW). This paper aims to discuss the frame of the PSERAS for TSISW for large scale production. This system consists of two aspects: predicted factors and accidental ones, which involve physical, chemical and biological risk assessments, on-site and during transportation process. Two analysis methods, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and fuzzy logic assessment (FLA) were used to handle the complexity of environment and non-quantitative data. The risk assessment system for such a complex objective is difficult and the assessment of relative factors is problematic through the usual quantitative analysis. With the proposed PSERAS, it is possible to define the risk class of pollution sources. Furthermore, the risk assessment results will be helpful to the decision-maker, especially when facing unknown risks in the environmental management of industrial solid wastes. "Brazil is the sixth worldwide producer of aluminum and Votorantim (Metals) has been operating three bauxite open pit mines in a particular way of working. In those the deposits occur on the top of hills, under forest, coffee, eucalyptus plantation or pasture area.The deposits are not large and normally mining takes an average of two months to be completed before starting the rehabilitation process, which demands a good strategy in mining planning to achieve the production goals.The benefit function developed to select feasible areas uses, beyond production costs, fees from the owner by using their area and rehabilitation cost. Both are based on land use and occupation field survey data. In this process each area with different land use receives a specific rehabilitation cost as input into a block model.Once the selection is made the mining schedule begins, taking into consideration the following premise: the orebody needs to be mined in a short period of time because during this time, the surface owners receive from Votorantim a compensation based on the expected profits from their plantation or pasture, plus royalties related to the ore amount existing in their area.Not all operations have waste dumps. Waste is pushed down by bulldozers to the lower part of the ore border. After loading and transporting ore, the waste is handled back to the mined area to fit the topography. With this step concluded, the mined area is directed to the environmental team who, alongside university partners, develop land reclamation to return them to their owners, eg in 2011, 110 ha were rehabilitated of which 29 per cent is native forest.Votorantim closes many mined areas a year and currently the entire mine planning considers this particular way of operation, making profit with minimum interference with the community and the environment.CITATION:Artioli, P, Kato, M S, Romanel, A and Piermatei, M P, 2012. Environmental, social and governance issues (ESG) have become a defining feature in the marketplace to differentiate preferred investments. With the sustainability commitment and reporting landscape anticipated to evolve exponentially, it is now imperative to rapidly develop the approach taken by mineral companies to adequately identify and address ESG risks and opportunities in the reporting of Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve (MRMR). MRMR cannot be effectively reported as technically and financially assured and realistically executable, if ESG is not integrated into the strategy, business model, input assumptions and process that defines and drives robust MRMR public reporting. Regulatory reporting codes across the globe are presently in various stages of being updated and modified to ensure ESG factors are appropriately covered as a key part of diligent and transparent disclosure. Security exchanges are making it clear that companies must not omit ESG risks from reports to investors. This paper discusses associated challenges for MRMR reporting and suggests avenues for improvement. Key themes include: the importance of procedure rather than prescription and checklists; how ESG criteria impact Modifying Factors and determination of Reasonable Prospects for Economic Extraction (RPEE); the need for financial models to account for material ESG commitments; the uniqueness of each mineral asset; the need for education, upskilling and accreditation of both ESG experts about MRMR reporting and equally Competent Persons in ESG matters; and the need for clear and balanced reports that meet the needs of end users. (RPEE is adopted here for simplicity and consistency, recognising that some reporting codes still include ‘Eventual’ in the term (ie RPEEE). Whilst RPEE and RPEEE are subtly different the intent is to point to the process of assessing ESG factors in determining reasonable prospects.) The principles of transparency, materiality and competence remain paramount when considering the impact of ESG matters on MRMR reporting, and this necessitates an inclusive, cohesive, and integrated approach to assessing ESG issues to ensure the necessary expertise and diligence is applied.

The Tui Mine is an abandoned Pb-Zn mine giving rise to water quality problems in the Te Aroha region of Coromandel, New Zealand. When sampled in September 2002, for example, both the Tui and Tunakohoia Streams draining the mine site exceeded ANZECC (2000) water quality guidelines for aquatic life protection (Cu, Cd and Zn) and recreational quality (Cd). Based on trace metal mass flux (kg/yr) from parts of the mine site, the principal pathways by which Cu, Zn and Cd contamination reach these streams have been identified as:the tailings dam leachate,the diverted stream water from above the dam,the drainage from Adit 5 (which accounts for 95 % of Zn and Cd contamination in Tunakohoia Stream), andto a lesser extent, run-off from waste rock piles below Adit 4 level. Of the various remediation options, which have been proposed for the site, the following are identified as providing the best protection for the Tui and Tunakohoia streams:stabilising the tailings dam embankment and capping the embankment and tailings,constructing and/or cleaning out engineered diversion drains around the perimeter of the tailings dam to divert surface water away from the tailings dam, andinstalling bulkheads within Adit 5. A formal postal survey of the people of Te Aroha (66 respondents from 230 surveys) indicated that their priority was that the site be made safe for the public to visit, and used for recreation. As soil samples in potential recreational areas of the mine site, significantly exceeded guideline values for Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd and As, soil removal or capping clearly also needs to be part of a remediation plan. Development of the site as a historical/ecotourism area was viewed favourably, as this may encourage more visitors to the Te Aroha area as well as educate local residents.

As we strive for a sustainable and resilient future, repurposing assets has become a top priority. In Australia alone, we have a significant number of mineral projects in the pipeline, extensive existing operations, and over 50 000 legacy sites. Collectively, this presents a unique opportunity to be a world leader in mine rehabilitation. Complex stakeholder landscapes, inflexible policies, aged regulatory frameworks, technical uncertainties and increasing liabilities are all barriers hindering effective transition of legacy assets. The impetus for change is further catalysed by shifting consumer preferences, workforces in flux and regional Australians questioning what the transition means for their local community. We need innovative approaches to take a leading role in the industry and support global efforts more broadly. Co-designing an ambitious, shared vision spanning projects, operations and legacy assets with all key parties is a fundamental step to unlock and realise maximum societal, environmental, economic and reputational value. Serious play and gamification can further enhance this visioning process.

Results of laboratory studies on the flotation of marmatite (zinc sulphide) with new reagents, which were developed to avoid the use of copper sulphate, are presented.Episulphides were chosen as the basis for the reagents because of their reported special chemical affinity for zinc and cadmium. Attempts were made to solubilize and introduce functional groups to episulphides with organic and inorganic acids, ammonia, phenol, aniline, diethylamine, and pyridine. As a class of reagents, the episulphide-amine combination was generally found effective in zinc sulphide flotation to a greater or lesser degree. Best results were obtained with ethylene sulphide-aniline combination. Although anilino-ethyl mercaptan is the reported reaction product of aniline and ethylene sulphide, it was concluded that the effective zinc sulphide flotation with ethylene sulphide-aniline combination is not entirely due to the formation of the mercaptan.The economics of the possible usage of ethylene sulphide-aniline reagent are discussed.

Kapowai Caldera Complex (KCC), located 10 km west of Tairua (eastern Coromandel Peninsula), is a late Miocene composite collapse caldera, formed during eruption of several small and large volume andesitic rhyolitic ignimbrites. Numerous epithermal Au-Ag mineral deposits and associated alteration zones at the KCC are related to caldera (rhyolite lava domes, intracaldera faults) or regional structures (faults). The main epithermal deposit exposed in the central KCC is associated with an E-W striking structural boundary fault that cuts the Welcome Jack rhyolite dome. Propylitic (calcite - chlorite) and sericitic (quartz - sericite) alteration haloes surround this deposit. Sporadic zones of sericitic alteration are also exposed within and on the margins of the Bulls Run rhyolite dome complex. Epithermal systems post-dated emplacement of these rhyolite domes, but were controlled by them. Propylitic alteration of ignimbrite in the floor of the Kapowai and Kauaeranga valleys is related to the major NE-trending Kapowai Fault which extends SW to south of Thames. Alteration along this fault pre-dates alteration associated with the rhyolite lava domes. Numerous sericitic and propylitic altered welded ignimbrite, rhyolite and andesite lava lithic fragments have been sampled from intracaldera ignimbrites, and although no direct source is known, they infer the presence of buried epithermal systems. Repeated epithermal activity at the KCC is inferred by the exposed epithermal deposits/alteration zones and the older buried geothermal systems. Silicic caldera volcanoes are considered to be critical volcanic environments for epithermal Au-Ag mineralisation in Coromandel, but are highly variable and need detailed stratigraphic, structural, petrologic, and geophysical studies to characterise them.

Geological models for the exploration and evaluation of epithermal Au and porphyry Cu-Au deposits rely upon a classification of different deposit styles and an understanding of the evolutionary processes of deposit formation. These models guide the interpretation of subsurface deposit anatomy in order to target drill testing and assist the explorationist to focus on the more prospective projects. It is important for the explorationist to distinguish between different styles of magmatic arc Au deposits as each style displays distinctive characteristics with exploration implications. Magmatic arc Au deposits are distinguished as porphyry Cu-Au formed at depths of 1 - 2 km at the apophysis to larger, buried, magmatic sources which are also the ultimate metal sources for the varying styles of shallower level epithermal Au deposits. Low sulfidation epithermal Au deposits characteristically develop from dilute circulating meteoric waters and are distinguished as the group with a closer relationship to intrusive source rocks, and slightly higher sulfide contents (still generally

Low sulfidation epithermal deposits are important sources of gold and silver, and are considered the extinct analogues of modern geothermal systems. The aerial extents of alteration halos that surround twenty-two epithermal deposits range from 4 to 315 km2, with many less than 60 km2. Deposits with alteration halos <30 km2 typically have well defined limits, whereas deposits with alteration exceeding 30 km2 are commonly complicated by overlapping alteration centres related to adjacent epithermal deposits or other deposit types (i.e. high sulfidation, porphyry). Irrespective of the physical coverage of vein or alteration halos, both large (>60 km2) and small (<20 km2) deposits can contain large amounts of gold and silver. The size ranges for twenty-one analogous liquid-dominated geothermal fields from around the world have a restricted size range of 5 to 60 km2 and irrespective of physical size, commonly have multiple zones of focused fluid upflow. From an exploration perspective the comparison between epithermal deposits and geothermal fields provide the following four important points. 1) Alteration halos surrounding epithermal deposits as well as those for analogous geothermal systems show a range of sizes, although most are less than 60 km2. Therefore, where alteration exceeds 60 km2 multiple vein systems related to several paleogeothermal systems are predicted. 2) Multiple upflow zones are common in geothermal fields of all sizes (5 to 60 km2) and although difficult to demonstrate in epithermal deposits there is a strong possibility of discovering several discrete adjacent mineralised centres. 3) The orientation of veins parallels the principle orientation of the surrounding alteration and where alteration is wider than the vein strike length, this could suggest the occurrence of adjacent veins. 4) The physical size of both veins and alteration zones is not important in relation to amount of contained gold, as both large and small can contain large amounts of gold. These conclusions provide insight into the physical size limits and hydrologic structure of these paleogeothermal systems and highlight the potential for multiple mineralisation centres within a single alteration halo.

In different parts of the world the term epithermal is commonly used for a variety of deposit styles. Using the redox state of the ore-forming fluid (inferred from mineralogy and alteration), the metal assemblage of deposits, and other characteristics, at least five different styles of epithermal deposit can be distinguished. Most of these different deposit styles appear to be related to magmatic fluids, with differences resulting from different compositions of source magmas. The most common style of epithermal deposit (low-sulfidation gold-silver deposits associated with calc-alkaline volcanic rocks) remains the most difficult to explain; the metals in these deposits may be derived by basement leaching without magmatic input, or they may come from magmatic volatiles, with contaminated I-type or S-type magmas as the most likely source.

The Japanese gold mining industry has a long and productive history and is presently undergoing a period of revitalisation encouraged by the Hishikari discovery. Deposits exhibiting the characteristics of epithermal mineralisation are very widely distributed throughout the island chain and an encouraging number of these are large, seven containing gold in excess of one million ounces. Epithermal gold-silver deposits occur in young volcanic terrains where post-mineral cover commonly impedes the search for mineralisation. At the Togi Project in Honshu, Japan, a complex mineralised system is largely covered by post mineral volcaniclastics. A combination of high resolution electrical resistivity surveying and detailed airphoto interpretation has, with close geological control, enabled synthesis of structural and alteration characteristics of the Togi geothermal system, in turn permitting ranking of the prospects for drill testing.

It is argued, that plate convergence, i.e. subduction, at other than right angles under a continental margin may lead to compensa-tional transcurrent faulting in the sialic environment. In this pro-cess the introduction of ultrabasic slivers, derived from the down-going oceanic crusial plate, along this fault may occur. This regi-me, both compressive overall and tensional along the transcurrent fault, will contain numerous indications for ongoing igneous and tectonic processes (such as volcanism, hot springs and frequent earthquakes).Examples for this scenario are California, the hinge between the Alpine- and Appennine orogens and the island of Sumatra.Igneous manifestations of subduction will be present both as inter-mediate intrusions and/or andesitic piles. The intermediate volca-nics may be intensely altered (chloritic, propylitic, argillic). Silice-ous breccias and banded chalcedonic sinters may be commonly found. This entire scenario is indicative for epithermal gold mine-ralisation.
