The Kanowna Belle gold mine in Western Australia has reached a depth of 1000 m on the way to 1300 m. A feasibility study undertaken in 2006 identified the mining of E-Block as both technically and commercially feasible. One of the major risks identified in the study was the ventilation capacity, as the existing primary ventilation system would not support the production schedule for mining and a major system upgrade would be required. Failure to provide the necessary airflow would put the project at risk. A review of the airflow requirements and infrastructure options detailed in the feasibility study was undertaken to ensure that the assumptions and design were optimised. This review recommended a minimum airflow of 206 m3/s, but by acknowledging the necessary constraints imposed by mining at depth and re-engineering the mine layout to optimise the primary ventilation circuit, this requirement was reduced to 160 m3/s. This represents a 22 per cent reduction in airflow and a reduction in capital cost that will see mining at depth become economically feasible at Kanowna Belle. This paper discusses the processes that led to a redesign of the mining layout and highlights the importance of including the ventilation network in the optimisation process.

The evolution of the Oaky Creek mining complex provides a good example of the mining cycle in practice. Oaky Creek has been innovative in its choice of mining methods, with virtually the full range of coal mining methods having been used as workings have progressed down dip. The history of the mine is traced through its development (and ownership changes), progressive selection of mining methods as depths of cover to seams being mined have increased, and rehabilitation. This allows the different mining methods to be described and illustrates the concept of æwall-to-wall miningÆ.

There are four main types of base metal and gold mineralisation recognised in the central Pine Creek Geosyncline. These are stratiform, polymetallic veins, stockwork/concordant gold-quartz veins and unconformity related uranium-gold-platinoid mineralisation. The stratigraphy of the central Palaeoproterozoic Pine Creek Geosyncline has been simplified into three groups comprising the Batchelor, Frances Creek and Finniss River Groups in ascending order. Stratiform mineralisation occurs within the Frances Creek Group. The earliest mineralisation is found adjacent to circular faults ringing basement highs. Higher in the stratigraphy, stratiform mineralisation is often associated with zones of high compression in the vicinity of basement highs. A synsedimentary-diagenetic origin for stratiform mineralisation is proposed. Polymetallic vein mineralisation occurs within the Frances Creek and Finniss River Groups. Its composition changes systematically through the stratigraphy similar to the stratiform mineralisation. The mineralisation is structurally controlled and usually occurs in the vicinity of basement highs. Stockwork-concordant gold-quartz vein mineralisation is hosted by the upper Frances Creek and Finniss River Groups. It occurs within compressional zones and along the Pine Creek Structure corridor around, above and particularly between basement highs. Mineable reserves occur in thick continuous semi concordant quartz-sulphide veins and/or stockworks. Unconformity related uranium-gold-platinoid mineralisation shows a close spatial relationship with the Palaeoproterozoic/Mesoproterozoic unconformity. The mineralisation is localised by structures formed during Mesoproterozoic deposition and is commonly adjacent to Archaean basement or its remobilised equivalents. The type of mineralisation (stratifom/polymetallic vein) is a reflection of local stress regimes, structure and physio-chemical conditions. An initial phase of stratiform mineralisation is postulated to have occurred with the first significant marine transgression in a tensional regime. A second phase occurred later during a compressive regime. "Ihermochemical sulphate reduction of mineralising fluids by hydrocarbons is invoked as the precipitation mechanism for the polymetallic vein type of mineralisation. Hydrocarbon generation is postulated to have occurred within the Frances Creek Group, in many places contemporaneously with the movement of mineralising fluids and basin compression. Polymetallic veins formed from the interaction of mineralising fluids and hydrocarbons which were trapped in suitable structures. An abundant, continuing supply of hydrocarbons was necessary to form significant deposits. Where these conditions were not net, the mineralising fluids largely continued their ascent to the near surface environment to form stratiform deposits. The stockwork/concordant gold-quartz vein mineralisation is a later event and occurred during the relaxation of compressional defonnation after deposition of the 1-inniss River Group.

The first mining in Western Australia probably commenced some 40 000 years ago when Aborigines arrived and began quarrying stone for tools and weapons, and ochre for decoration. The earliest documented mining by European settlers took place in 1850 on a small lead vein in the bed of the Murchison River, reported by the explorer A C Gregory. However, it was the discovery of gold in the Kimberley region in 1885 that first drew wider attention to the State's mineral potential.

Mineralisation adjacent to Herberton occurs within three main subcentres. The Her- berton Hill subcentre is characterised by the association of Sn,W the Herberton Dividing Range South subcentre by Sn, and the Herberton Dividing Range North by Cu, As. The relation- ships between the subcentres are discussed in terms of metal distribution, production, deposit types, wall rock alteration and re- lationships with granitoid intrusives. The temporal and three dimensional spatial re- lationships between the centres are uncertain.

As part of a project on the application of thiourea leaching to a variety of Australian ores, the systematic variation of pH, redox po- tential, and thiourea concentration were in- vestigated on an oxidized gold ore from the Nevoria mine, WA. Stirred open beaker tests were conducted with a pH-stat and Eh-stat system to automati- cally control pH and redox potential at selected values, while thiourea concentration was main- tained manually. Increasing the acidity of the leach liquor from pH 3.6 to pH 1, increased the gold extrac- tion from 37 per cent to over 90 per cent in S h, but there was only a limited improvement below pH 1.5. Silver extraction and thiourea consumption increased as the acidity was in- creased. Increasing the redox potential from 150 to 200 mV (i.e. potential of Pt electrode vs SCE) increased the initial rate of gold and silver extraction, but the effect on cumulative gold extraction by 5 h was slight. Thiourea consump- tion was greatly increased as the redox poten- tial was increased. An increase in thiourea concentration from 1.2 to 4.8 per cent increased the initial rates of gold and silver extraction, but, as for the change in Eh, the improvement in cumulative ex- traction by 5 h was marginal. Thiourea consump- tion increased with thiourea concentration.

The ore used in this test program was a composite sample from Waihi, New Zealand containing 2.7 g/t gold and 36 g/t silver. From the testwork it was found that a high concentration of sodium cyanide (0.1 per cent) was necessary to ensure a high recovery of both gold and silver. There appeared little chance for either differential leaching or adsorption of gold and silver. The addition of bentonite clay decreased the rates of gold and silver dissolution. The addition of 50 g/1 NaCI had little influence on the rate of silver extraction. The addition of 5 g/l carbon gave adsorptions of 70 per cent of the gold and 35 per cent of the silver, indicating the possible presence of base metal cyanides in solution. The addition of excess sodium sulphide only precipitated 70 per cent of the silver in solution, adding further evidence to the presence of base metal sulphides. The production of separate silver and gold products was not possible by either preferential leaching, preferential adsorption of gold on carbon or preferential precipitation of silver.

A number of people have expressed concern, understandably, that if mining operations take place in the Coromandel, the flows of mineralised ground water which exist will be intercepted. This water in many cases contains toxic metals including mercury, arsenic and lead and it is thought that if this water is allowed to enter streams or the waters of the Hauraki Gulf, it could endanger natural marine life and possibly established fisheries. This paper seeks to explain in simple terms the geology and the process of deposition of the various mineral deposits in the ground, the chemistry of the reactions between these minerals and the rain water falling on the ground, the hydrology and behaviour of this mineralised groundwater as it moves through the ground until it eventually enters the sea.

In the Waiotapu geothermal area only Champagne Pool, 109 ng/L, and Waiotapu Geyser, 7.6 ng/L, have dissolved Au concentrations greater than 5 ng/L and most springs have concentrations less than 2 ng/L. When Au concentration data are combined with other physico-chemical data from each spring including; pH, reduced sulphur concentration and temperature, the degree of Au saturation can be calculated. All samples sites except Champagne Pool, Waiotapu Geyser and the Artists Palette are under-saturated with respect to Au(s) by 1 to 3 orders of magnitude. This indicates that adsorption or co-precipitation or both are important processes depositing Au beneath hot springs. Deposition of Au by adsorption or co-precipitation beneath hot springs implies that dissolved Au may not have to reach saturation concentrations for ore to deposit. This interpretation is supported by the presence of substantial Au as sub-microscopic components within sulphide minerals in ore deposits and indicates depositional efficiency beyond that possible through precipitation of Au(s).

The Lachlan Fold Belt (LFB) is a complex orogenic belt which developed in Early to Mid Palaeozoic time. A number of orogenies and more localised deformational events affected the region. A simplified classification scheme for the diverse gold deposit types is proposed, subdividing primary mineralizing processes into four categories: volcanism (epithermal and volcanogenic deposits), igneous intrusion (subvolcanic/porphyry style, skarn and magmatic deposits), metahydrothermal processes (deposits generated during metamorphism and regional deformation) and hydrothermal-distal processes (deposits generated by poorly understood, generally remote large scale hydrothermal processes). Major gold deposit associations include epithermal and porphyry style deposits in Ordovician-Early Silurian shoshonitic andesite sequences; volcanogenic base metal-gold deposits in Silurian rift or basin felsic sequences; vein deposits in Late Silurian and Early Devonian S and I-type granitoids; deposits in Early Devonian sedimentary rocks of the Cobar Basin probably generated by metahydrothermal processes during basin closure and cleavage formation; deposits associated with serpentinite; and metahydrothermal quartz vein deposits in folded sedimentary rocks.Studies of host rock geochemistry suggest a relationship between magma types, gold enrichment and mineralization particularly in shoshonitic sequences and Early Devonian granitoids of the Boggy Plain Supersuite. Structural studies indicate the importance of thrust type structures and detachment faults in generation and location of gold mineralization. Lead isotope initial ratios help define metallogenic associations and a number of distinctive isotope "signatures" have been established.

"Approximately 32 per cent of the worldÆs total gold production has come from greenstone belts (Frimmel, 2008). In these regions numerous small to large, quartz vein-associated gold deposits are hosted in metamorphic rocks ranging from lower greenschist to granulite facies. Historical exploration has focused its efforts on rocks of greenschist to lower amphibolite facies because these seem to contain the most deposits. Consequently, these regions are now reaching mature brownfield status, particularly in developed nations, and finding new deposits is becoming progressively more difficult. In comparison, regions of similar tectonic setting, but instead containing high-grade metamorphic rocks of mid-amphibolite to granulite facies, have received little attention because the first explorers found fewer deposits there.However, these regions certainly do contain some very significant gold deposits such as Hemlo in Canada (~684 t Au), Renco in Zimbabwe (~31 t Au mined since 1980), the very profitable Challenger deposit in South Australia (~36 t Au; recovered + reserve + resource), and the most recently discovered Tropicana deposit in Western Australia (~182 t Au; reserve + resource). High-grade metamorphic terrains therefore offer explorationists an excellent opportunity to move onto relatively green fields within developed nations, which carry less risk associated with development. However, explorationists have comparatively little knowledge of the geological controls on gold distribution in high-grade terranes because: industry experience lies in traditional lode-style gold deposits these gold deposits are geologically more complex there has simply been minimal research conducted on these deposits as a holistic group.Furthermore, research conducted in the last five years has shown us that the previous widely accepted model for gold genesis in these terranes, the crustal continuum model, is incorrect. Here, I discuss features from several gold deposits hosted in high-grade metamorphic rocks and use these to define two categories for explorationists to consider: deposits that formed prior to peak metamorphism (metamorphosed gold deposits) deposits that formed well after peak metamorphism (post-metamorphic gold deposits). The New Zealand microcontinent is relatively well endowed with gold deposits; its past gold production per unit area of 3.2 kg/km2 ranks high on a world scale. Total recorded production (1857 - 1986) is about 854 000 kg and most of this gold was mined between 1861 and 1920. There has been a strong revival in gold exploration and mining since 1979, with exploration expenditure of around $15 million per annum and a declared gold production in 1986 of 1265 kg (886 kg in 1985). In addition to numerous alluvial gold recovery plants working small to medium sized deposits (mainly in Westland and Otago), there are five medium to large projects that have started production (Martha Hill), or have reached advanced stages of construction (Grey River dredge), permitting (Golden Cross and Macraes) or exploration (Globe-Progress). The Xiong’ershan district in the southern margin of the North China Craton (NCC) contains more than 20 gold deposits hosted in the late Neoarchean to early Palaeoproterozoic amphibolite facies metamorphic rocks or late Palaeoproterozoic unmetamorphosed volcanic rocks. Gold mineralisation consists mainly of auriferous quartz veins and disseminated ores in hydrothermally altered zones, with additional gold mineralised breccia pipes. Gold orebodies are strictly controlled by secondary- or higher-order brittle/ductile-brittle faults. Isotopic dating reveals two separate episodes of gold mineralisation: the Shanggong and Dianfang deposits formed in the range of 236 ± 1.4 to 202 ± 18 Ma, whereas the Gongyu, Qianhe and Qiyugou deposits formed between 135.0 ± 0.5 Ma and 124.0 ± 1.0 Ma. Stable isotope and noble gas geochemistry studies indicate that the Triassic gold deposits were precipitated from deeply-sourced, low-salinity fluids at 250–350°C, but whether the fluids were mainly derived from metamorphic devolatilisation or magmatic degassing remains unresolved. In contrast, the Early Cretaceous deposits most likely precipitated from a dominantly magmatic fluid, although metamorphic and meteoric components cannot be ruled out. Results from this study, when combined with regional geological and geochemical data, suggest that the Triassic gold mineralisation was generated by the deformation associated with the collision between the North China and Yangtze cratons, forming the Qinling-Dabie orogen. In contrast, the Early Cretaceous gold veining was a result of lithospheric destruction of the NCC, a process initiated by plate subduction from both the south and north since late Palaeozoic but ultimately triggered by the westward subduction of the palaeo-Pacific plate in the late Mesozoic. The Goldstrike Mine is in Eureka County, Nevada, U.S.A., approximately 23 miles northwest of the town of Carlin. The mine is at the north end of the Tuscarora Spur of the Tuscarora Mountains at elevations of 5,300 feet to 5,950 feet. It is part of the Bluestar/Goldstrike subdistrict of the Carlin Trend, a northwest alignment of sediment hosted, disseminated gold deposits. The Carlin Trend includes over 15 major gold deposits with production, reserves and geological resources of approximately 65 million ounces of gold (Figure 1). In the Bluestar/Goldstrike subdistrict, there are seven major deposits; Betze, Lower Post, Post, Genesis, Bluestar, Purple Vein and Deep Star, plus numerous smaller deposits (Figure 2). Production, reserves and resources for the subdistrict are approximately 40 million ounces. Betze and Purple Vein are located on property controlled by Bamck Goldstrike Mines and Bluestar and Genesis on Newmont Gold property. Post, Lower Post, and Deep Star occur both on Barrick and Newmont Property.

North Eastern Russia encompasses the northern part of the Circum Pacific. The region comprises various tectonostratigraphic terranes, including cratonic blocks, fragments of volcanic arcs, accretionary wedge terranes, oceanic crust and passive continental margins. The terranes have been accreted to the eastern margin of the Siberian Craton in the Late Mesozoic. The prominent structures of the region are extended zones of the Mesozoic flysch and turbidites. Another important structure is the 3000 km long Okhotsk-Chukotka volcanic arc which marks the Cretaceous active continental margin of northern Eurasia. The youngest structure of the region is the 2000 km long Late Cainozoic Kamchatka-Kuril island arc system. North Eastern Russia is the main gold producing region of the Russian Federation. Since the beginning of recorded gold production in 1932 until 1995 the region has produced 2575 t (83M oz) of gold. Most of it, 2439.5 t, has been produced from placers. Owing to depletion of alluvial gold resources, exploration and mining emphasis is currently switching to the development of the lode deposits. At least five distinct types of the gold mineralisation are reported in North Eastern Russia - mesothermal gold mineralisation in the Mesozoic fold belts, Paleozoic epithermal gold mineralisation occurring within Omolon block, epithermal gold mineralisation related to the Mesozoic volcanics, Cainozoic epithermal gold mineralisation, gold-bearing Cu-porphyry deposits. The current paper introduces the metallogeny of lode-gold deposits of North Eastern Russia. It provides the review of the regional geology, the selected gold provinces and representative deposits with an emphasis on the mineralisation styles and distribution control.

The Palaeozoic succession of Victoria contains one of the world's major gold provinces with a total production of 2500 tonnes of gold. Larger deposits, including Bendigo (over 800 tonnes Au), are related to Ordovician slates and greywackes, but a wide range of metamorphosed sedimentary and igneous rock types are host to significant gold deposits. Most, if not all, deposits demonstrate structural control, although the controlling structural features are variable between deposits: a majority of deposits comprise quartz veins. It is suggested here that a major factor in making Victoria such a gold-rich province might be a particularly high geothermal gradient in central Victoria during the Tabberabberan orogeny (360-380 my). This generated auriferous metamorphic fluids from underlying successions (?Cambrian) which migrated upwards along active structural pathways. One cause of gold deposition appears to have been fluid reduction by carbon, but other methods are suspected. This model is considerably simpler than the plethora of syngenetic, granite magmatic and lamprophyre-related models that have been proposed recently, but is in basic agreement with Cox et al. (1983). Exploration models for similar gold deposits both within Victoria and elsewhere should take account of the negligible evidence for a major syngenetic contribution to Victorian gold production, and the lack of any clear genetic relationship to particular igneous rock types. A real opportunity exists for new deposit types not identified by the early prospectors.

The history of gold dredging in New Zealand, leading to the develop- ment of the `New Zealand Type' dredge is considered. Much of this infor- mation has come from contemporaneous publications by the New Zealand Department of Mines. Alluvial gold production declined after 1902, and ceased completely in 1982, but is now rising again. The progress of the New Zealand alluvial gold mining industry is considered, together with some of its more exceptional successes. Recent developments are com- pared to those of the past.

This paper is in two parts. The first covers the evolution of dredging leading to the development of the æNZ typeÆ large dredge and the second, current alluvial gold recovery practice in NZ. NZ was the first country in the world to adapt the bucket-ladder dredge to alluvial gold recovery. Between 1857 and 1907, gold worth (at today's NZ price of about NZ$600/ounce*) over $11 billion was exported û from a country with well under one million people at that time. Over 200 small dredges operated, mostly on the Clutha River, around the turn of the century, however by 1940, only 20 or so large machines remained, and the last of these, the 4000 ton 'Kanieri' ceased operations three years ago. Recently recognition of the superior digging power of the hydraulic backhoe and reintroduction of the simple 'trommel and riffleÆ plant with about 80 m3 /hour capacity has led to a proliferation of static and floating plants, there being at least 50 currently in operation on the West Coast and in Otago. There are signs however, that the process of evolution of such small unsophisticated plants into larger, more efficient units has begun again. * At the time of writing (October 1984) NZ$l. 00 = US 50ó. The Mineral Resources Act 1989-90 came into force on 1 Septem- ber 1990 and the Second Schedule of this Act set out the Savings, Transitional and Validation Clauses to this legislation. The Second Schedule gave rise to a number of interesting situa- tions however due to the fact that the time set aside to attend to these matters (the prescribed period) has now expired, with the exception of the points raised below, most of these situations are now history and are of no relevance. The Transitional provisions of the Second Schedule provided for a three month "prescribed period" in which certain actions were required to be undertaken to ensure tenements granted or applied for under the repealed legislation transitioned into the framework provided by the Mineral Resources Act. This Second Schedule of the Mineral Resources Act highlighted a number of anomalies which are still worthy of mention and are listed below.

The Australian gold industry has in recent years experienced a tremendous growth period, though not to levels prevailing at the turn of the century. There are, however, a number of dynamic factors at play which collectively indicate that it would be unwise to assume that this growth will be maintained; indeed the future discovery of viable new deposits may be insufficient to prevent an industry decline in Australia.The higher gold prices of the 1980's together with technological advances, made previously worked mining centres areas of excellent prospectivity. These resources, signposted for us by the oldtimers, are being rapidly depleted. Whilst there can be no doubt that these resources can be replaced the real question is whether it is economic to explore for new deposits when it is likely that:The cost of future exploration will increase as exploration must focus on grassroot areas with few signposts. Almost by definition this primary exploration effort will be subject to a lower success ratio.The cost of future exploration will increase as new deposits will be located in more remote areas and at depth.
