The REFLUX Classifier is used to perform particle separations on the basis of density utilising a set of parallel inclined channels positioned above a vertical fluidised section. In continuous mode, feed enters part way up the vertical section, while fluidisation water is introduced from below. Lower density particles are conveyed upwards and collected in an overflow stream, while high density particles segregate onto the inclined surfaces, settle to the base of the system and empty via an underflow stream. Pressure transducers are used to measure the suspension density in the vertical section. This suspension density is maintained by a pneumatically controlled underflow valve to maintain a target suspension density or ‘set point’.Previously, Galvin et al (2010) demonstrated the significant improvement achieved via a new laminar-shear separation mechanism, achieved by utilising closely spaced inclined channels in the REFLUX Classifier. For the separation of low-density coal particles from mineral matter, a channel spacing of 6 mm proved effective; however, for the separation of gangue minerals from much higher density minerals such as iron ore, the shear-induced lift needs to be even higher. In this paper, we examine the influence of two different channel widths on the continuous processing of an industrial iron ore feed in the REFLUX Classifier. It was found that when moving from 6.0 mm to 3.0 mm channels, the ability of the system to reject coarser gangue material and retain finer high density material across a particle size range from 0.125 to 1.0 mm was increased, resulting in a higher grade product.CITATION:Hunter, D M, Zhou, J, Iveson, S M and Galvin, K P, 2017. The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to develop blast designs for the control of fragmentation and rock displacement and the reduction of overall mining costs. This Bureau experiment, a program of 25 reduced-scale blasts conducted at the University of Missouri-Rolla's experimental quarry, determined the effects on fragmentation of changes in burden, spacing, explosive diameter, and stemming-explosive length. Combined with previous work at this experimental quarry examining air gap, delay, and decoupling effects, this experiment provided a data base of over 50 shots. The fragmented rock, 1000 to 3000 kg from each 3- to 4-hole blast in the 1 m bench of massive dolomite, was completely screened to assess fragmentation. The explosive used for all the tests was extra dynamite initiated by seismic caps fired from a sequential blasting machine with delays of 5.2- to 13-ms/m of burden. Empirical equations were developed which predicted the effect of shot design parameters on the fragmentation. These formulas predicted the average fragment size of each of the 25-shots to within 13 percent. For spacing to burden ratios of 1, 1.4 and 2, there were optimum burden to explosive diameter ratios (B/de) of 30, 26 and 20, respectively. Decreasing the B/d. ratio beyond these levels resulted in little or no reduction in the average size. For B/de ratios above these levels the average size increased but, at least a 15 percent reduction in the average size results when the shot design parameters are optimized.

Al2O3 in natural iron ores generally occurs in goethite, kaolinite, gibbsite, hematite and iron carbonate. When the content of alumina in sinter increases from 1.11 per cent to 3.50 per cent, the reducibility of sinter decreases with the addition of four different types of alumina. When gibbsite and kaolinite are added, the low temperature reduction disintegration (RDI+3.15 mm) of sinter increases with the increase of Al2O3 content in the range of 1.5 per cent to 3.5 per cent. Furthermore, when adding pure reagent alumina, the increase of Al2O3 content in the range of 1.5 per cent to 3.0 per cent will increase the RDI+3.15 mm of sinter. The addition of ferric oxide–alumina spinel with the Al2O3 content in the range of 1.5 per cent to 2.5 per cent, also increases the RDI+ 3.15 mm of sinter. The influence difference is results from the change of the mineral composition and microstructure of sinter because of the occurrence state of Al2O3. Under the condition that Al2O3 content of sinter is 2 per cent, the porosity of sinter with kaolinite is 37.26 per cent, and the shape is irregular. When gibbsite and ferric oxide–alumina spinel are added, the porosity of sinter is about 16 per cent, and the pores are round. When pure reagent alumina is added, the porosity of sinter is 17.49 per cent, and the pores are regular and small. When kaolinite, gibbsite and ferric oxide–alumina spinel are added, platy calcium ferrite is mainly formed in the sinter, and some of it is columnar calcium ferrite. On the other hand, when pure reagent alumina is added, in addition to platy columnar calcium ferrite, acicular calcium ferrite is also formed in the sinter.

A two-dimensional finite element modelling technique is applied to predict the subsidence movements on a sloping ground surface above a completely mined panel. The modelling is carried out for the surface both directly and using a combination of an equivalent horizontal surface and a rays projection method and the result compared. The rays projection method provides the subsidence components on a sloping surface from the corresponding ones on an assumed equivalent horizontal surface through the point of mean elevation of the relevant part of the sloping surface. This method is used next to compare the subsidences, horizontal displacements and horizontal strains from the mining of a given panel at the surface for different inclinations. The results show that the magnitudes of the subsidence components are greater on the dip side of the slope from the point of the mean elevation, than the corresponding ones on the rise side and the asymmetry increases with the inclination of the surface. The findings are also compared with those of other research Workers.

Synthetic and commercial activated carbons are characterised for several chemical and physical properties. A range of techniques is used to establish correlations between physicochemical parameters and gold- adsorption activities. The most important parameter in the carbon activation process for a product with a high gold-adsorption activity is the activation temperature. High activation temperatures yield products with large micropore volumes which provides sites that are ideal in size for adsorption. The surface area of an activated carbon is not necessarily a good measure of its adsorption activity. Surface oxygen-containing functional groups are identified by Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry to be comprised mainly of ethers and hydroxyls. These functional groups line the edges of the micropores imparting a polar character to the pore and aid in the solvation of the adsorbate. Oxidants such as nitric acid result in a proliferation of surface carboxyl groups. resulting in a negatively- charged surface that is not conducive to the adsorption of gold.

Tunnel excavation may induce adverse effects on nearby existing structures/foundations in urban areas. Accurate prediction of tunnelling effects on pile foundations of nearby structures in the urban environment poses a major challenge during design. Several studies have been undertaken to understand the mechanisms of the soil-tunnel-pile interaction, which focused only on influence of tunnelling on nearby existing building and foundations. However, effect of pile loading on existing tunnels did not receive enough research attention so far. So it is essential to measure the response of existing tunnel-lining due to loading on newly constructed pile to assess to the safety against the additional forces/moment caused by pile loading and to evaluate the critical distance for the proposed construction of any structures from the tunnel location. This paper presents result of three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis carried out in ABAQUS to investigate the effects of pile loading on existing tunnels embedded in cohesive soil. It is found that the effects on tunnel lining depend on horizontal separation distance between pile and tunnel as well as location/elevation of pile tip with respect to tunnel location.

There is a considerable difference in the particle size distribution (PSD) of clay mineral-rich coarse coal reject with variations in the test moisture state and the chemistry of the water used for testing. The coarse coal reject tested were collected from Jeebropilly Mine, located in the Ipswich Coalfields of south-eastern Queensland. Differences between the results of dry and wet sieving analysis indicate a significant breakdown of the clay mineral-rich coarse coal reject on wetting-up. Wet sieving caused a breakdown of the gravel-sized fraction to silt and clay size without significant breakdown to sand size. There is also a considerable variation in the results of hydrometer analyses of the clay mineral-rich coarse coal reject with variations in the chemistry of the water used, particularly at the fine end of the particle size range. The waters used included tap water, coal processing water and deionised water. In addition, the method of dispersion applied prior to hydrometer analysis can have a significant effect on the PSD of clay mineral-rich coarse coal reject, with boiling and sonic vibration causing the most breakdown of the clay particles. In this paper, the scientific bases of creation of simulation modelling systems of excavator-truck-conveyor complex work are represented. During the simulation modelling process of big mining and transport systems work the strict and full account of an order and sequence of all operations of simulated process is carried out. Step-by-step fixing of mining and transport system elements condition - excavators in loading and unloading points, trucks, road section, unloading points in storage bin, crushers and conveyors is conducted. Work and idle time of system elements are considered. During modelling process the information characterising system work as a whole is collected. It allows us to establish qualitative and quantitative influence of each system element on the final results of its functioning and provides to estimate rationality of a particular organisation variant of mining and transport equipment interaction from technological positions. Simulation results are: economic and technological indicators of mining and transport complex functioning of the period for each subsystem, as well as on the road, the points of loading, unloading and reloading.

Discovery 2000 is basically about data, its collection, management, assessment and dissemination. A major focus of Discovery 2000 is the collection of new geoscientific data. However, the Department is already a major source of data on the geology and mineral resources of New South Wales. These existing data when combined with the new data, will greatly enhance the knowledge of and information on the geology and the mineral development potential of New South Wales. This paper discusses some of the existing datasets and outlines how they can be accessed. It also gives an insight into the Department's strategy for data and information technology management.

Information is a key ingredient for successful mineral exploration and development. Whether identifying potential exploration localities from a map, interpreting technical reports or searching a register for operators past and present, the common aim is a parcel of information from which the enquirer can make a decision. Traditional information gathering often requires days or weeks of manual research, studying maps, files, reports etc, before consolidating the results into an investment proposal. In recent times, such methods have largely been replaced by Information Technology, making the process much faster, easier and more centralised. However, notwithstanding some very successful technology implementations, the general rush to computerise everything in sight has left many organisations struggling to cope with the management of large volumes of diverse information. Information management is now recognised as the most important factor in determining the success of information technology implementation. The Northern Territory Department of Mines and Energy (DME) has established a detailed information management strategy to underpin the rapid advance of computer technology within the organisation. A broad base of timely and reliable information is gradually becoming more accessible. It is envisaged that the availability of combined spatial, textual and scientific information will provide a sound basis for decision-making within the Department and the mining industry at large. Although information held by DME will be available at all times (24 hours on-line), its security and confidentiality will be guaranteed. The production of the DME system is aimed at satisfying the corporate objective to facilitate and promote mineral exploration and development. This paper outlines some current developments in the system.

The information age has definitely arrived and in fact has only begun to affect our business processes. Traditionally mining companies have been innovators and leaders with technology, but applying information technology systems to machines directly working on the mining extraction process poses challenges to those introducing the technology. Caterpillar is now presenting machine guidance and information systems for dozers, graders, blast hole drills, shovels, excavators, wheel loaders and trucks. These systems simply increase the flow of real information in real time and deliver it to the end users who can make informed decisions that effect real productivity gains and at the same time eliminate the role of the middle manager who used to monitor and control these activities. Technology also offers cultural changes that appear intangible, but offer significant gains to those that implement technology. Critics state that these intangible benefits are still available to traditional processes, however these intangible elements are never identified nor managed without the introduction of technology enhanced processes. The benefits of these technologies are real and dramatic, existing users offer impressive testimonials, but still the technology can be disproportionate in the time it takes to introduce to an operation. Caterpillar finds that senior to executive management needs to be a part of the technology introduction, to coordinate all departments and set technology strategies.

An infra-red absorption study has been made of crocidolite, country rock. and associated host rocks from Wittenoom Gorge. The spectrum of the country rock is appreciably different from those of crocidolite and the magnetite-rich host rocks which are closely similar. A process to separate crocidolite-bearing ore from country rock based on infra-red emission is therefore possible in theory.

Thermal method of diagnostic as a nondestructive monitoring is based on data logging of infrared radiation from heated surface or from the associated thermal field. Monitoring of gearcases and motors hidden faults, such as, bearing degradation (deep-seated wears and tears, fretting wear, spalling and jamming solids of revolution) is closely related to high variations in temperature. The use of portable thermal imaging devices provides considerable advantages due to: easy remote access to the unit under test even when it is operating; minimum time required to obtain information and an opportunity for a real-time diagnosis of the tested subject's condition.

Infrared spectroscopy has the ability to accurately measure mineralogy of drill cores, allowing for better spatial characterisation of iron ore deposits and potentially improving the prediction of key mining and processing parameters at the deposit scale. BHP Billiton Iron Ore is using infrared spectroscopic drill core logging to provide fast and accurate mineralogy for diamond cores and reverse circulation (RC) samples.Mineralogy can be predicted from infrared spectroscopic drill core data with errors on estimates ranging from six to 12 weight per cent. The error on the clay estimates is significantly lower than for hematite and goethite content estimates. This manuscript presents the results from a study on a bedded iron ore deposit, hosted in the Brockman iron formation, for which infrared spectroscopic data were collected on all of the diamond and RC drilling. Results show that these mineralogy estimates improve drill core logs, the geology model and the metallurgical block model.CITATION:Haest, M, Vitins, I and Hacket, A, 2013. The focus in the iron ore industry has shifted from increasing production volumes with less regard for cost, to efficient production of quality tonnes. BHP Billiton iron ore geoscience and exploration has embedded infrared spectroscopic sensing of drill hole samples to help meet this challenge.Infrared spectroscopy is delivering mineral predictions that are used for (automated) geology logging and modelling. The spectra are processed together with other available data sets to predict geometallurgical and geotechnical variables that include lump per cent and uniaxial compressive strength.Trials are ongoing to test the benefit of infrared spectroscopy during mining, including the analysis of grade control samples and remote sensing of mine faces. Results show great benefits in the fields of short-term geology modelling, better understanding of material (handling) properties, identification of geotechnical risk areas and high resolution ore-waste delineation.These trials are bringing BHP Billiton iron ore closer to its ultimate goal of having infrared spectroscopic data collected across the mining value chain. Once such data are available everywhere, regression models can be trained at one point (eg iron grade model trained on exploration samples) and be applied elsewhere (eg iron grade predicted on mine faces). Such predictive analytics will enable not only high precision mining, but also provide maximum time to tailor plant design to the ore in the ground, based on learnings from ores processed in other plants. Extensive infrastructure construction works were required for the development of the underground and open-cut coal mine at Ulan to a production capacity of 5 million tonnes of steaming coal per annum. The Ulan Mine development project was constructed in a two year period at a cost of $240 million. The infrastructure component included the construction of the mine site building works, civil works and 150km of railway, valued at $105 million. These works were successfully completed under a construction management agreement within two years. The separate elements of the project are described in detail in the paper.

In this paper, a subtle, but important, difference has been drawn between responsibility and mandate. Responsibility has a connotation of financial involvement assigned to an organ- isation as a result of some action it takes, the ramifications of which can be ascribed directly to the organisation. In contrast mandate relates to the power and authority to act. The paper outlines the role of poli- ticians as community decision-makers and the need for Government policy to be flexible in an advanced industrial society so that decision- making options are kept open for as long as necessary. Further, broad community objectives need to be understood and defined so that plans and policies can be consistent. Co-ordination through communication at all levels, especially at the public administration interfaces and with the private sector,is essential for effective resource allocation and efficient implementation. The paper discusses several aspects of the infrastructure responsibility question and some considerations which might be viewed as important by the community decision-makers in considering what responsibility the "community" should accept in providing infrastructure.

Infrastructure may be defined as anything necessary for the development and operation of a project, which is peripheral to the basic extraction, handling and processing of material.
