The Otago Schist is being subdivided on a regional scale into structurally, metamorphically and lithologically distinct blocks. Differences between blocks are subtle, and difficult to map in the field. Boundaries are late-metamorphic or immediately post-metamorphic in origin, and are different from later brittle faults which disrupt the schist. Mapping of late-post-metamorphic structural discontinuities has direct application for basic grassroots exploration in the Otago Schist. The mineralised (and currently mined) Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone forms a regional scale boundary between a block dominated by politic schist and a block with massive psammitic schist, pelitic schist, and minor greenschist and chert. The HMSZ forms a metamorphic discontinuity, with garnet and biotite in the underlying schist, and neither index minerals apparent in the overlying schist. The HMSZ is also a structural boundary between domains with differing lineation orientations. The HMSZ can not yet be traced along strike to the northwest to the Rock and Pillar Range, where the only major discontinuities recognised are the Caples-Torlesse boundary and a normal fault separating low grade from high grade schist. Structural and lithological discontinuities in the Dunstan Range break the range up into distinct structural blocks, two of which are separated by the gold-mineralised Rise and Shine Shear Zone.

Banded iron-formation (BIF) and iron ores were measured using the CSIRO developed TIRHyLogger ™ to assess its ability to map quartz, carbonates and riebeckite. The TIR-HyLogger™ measures continuously spectral refl ectance data from diamond drill core or drill chips with a high spatial and spectral resolution. Samples from twelve BIF, bedded iron deposits (BID) and channel iron deposits (CID) have been analysed. The spectral data were processed with two different approaches. The first approach, focused on the identifi cation of the major minerals, was performed using principal component analysis (PCA). It identified four minerals (quartz, ankerite, riebeckite and goethite) and provided pure spectra called end-members. The second approach included a mineral diagnostic spectral feature extraction involving wavelength position, relative peak heights and relative depths of absorptions. Quartz has a diagnostic absorption at 8.625 µm and ankerite shows a refl ectance peak at 11.275 µm. In addition to the identified end-members, two carbonate populations (calcite and siderite) and two silica species (quartz and amorphous silica) were identified.

The marine portion of the Pacific Basin and Rim constitutes a significant part of the world's surface in which the mineral resources are virtually undeveloped. Indications of substantial resources have resulted in speculation and uncertainty with regard to their potential in the near term. The main issues are centered on the markets for the resource materials, the technology needs for their recovery, and the possible impacts of their development on the environment. While the governments of Japan, France, the Soviet Union, India, China, and Korea are financing new programs in deep ocean mining, the US is consolidating its early leadership by the continuation of NOAA's authority under the Deep Seabed Hard Mineral Resources Act and the Sea Grant Act, Interior's authority under the outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, and by the development of a new Marine Minerals Technology Center within the Department of Interior's mineral institutes program, managed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The Center has a Continental Shelf Division (CSD) located in Mississippi, and an Oceans Basin Division (OBD) located in Hawaii. Research and training in the divisions is directed toward the practical aspects of mineral recovery from the nearshore and deep ocean environments with a strong bias for the OBD toward industrial and international cooperative programs in the Pacific Basin and Rim. In terms of resource development, the marine minerals in the Pacific Basin may be favored in some cases, in competition with land sources, by political and environmental considerations.

The Water Delivery Alliance (WDA) was established to design, construct and commission the pump station and desalinated water delivery pipeline to link the desalination plant on the Kurnell Peninsula (constructed by others) with the existing distribution network at Erskineville, Sydney, Australia. The WDA consisted of McConnell Dowell Corporation Ltd (Macdow), Bovis Lend Lease Pty Ltd (BLL), Kellogg Brown and Root Pty Ltd (KBR), Worleyparsons Ltd (WOR), Environmental Resources Management Group Inc (ERM) and Sydney Water Corporation (SWC).Sydney’s Desalination Project is one of the initiatives to secure Sydney’s water supply against the effects of climate change, population growth and drought. The desalination plant, 100 per cent powered by renewable energy, can supply up to 250 million litres of water per day (mld), which is up to 15 per cent of Sydney’s water needs. The project involved the construction of an 18 km pipeline with an ultimate capacity of 500 mld to accommodate any future increase in the output of the desalination plant.The Alliance procured three full-face tunnel boring machines (TBM) from Herrenknecht AG to construct the 6.5 km of tunnel that would provide a conduit for the DN1800 welded mild steel cement mortar lined (MSCL) pipeline at a number of locations along the route. Nineteen shafts and 16 tunnels were required to complete this work.Crucially one of the TBM drives involved construction of a tunnel into Botany Bay under protected marine life habitats; enabling the connection of the MSCL water carrier pipeline into the dredged section of pipeline underwater, approximately 800 m off-shore in Botany Bay.This paper details the retrieval of the 17.4 m long TBM from the ocean floor upon completion of the Botany Bay tunnel allowing for subsequent use on the Project. Elements covered in the paper include the 835 m tunnel, design and construction techniques for the tunnel and recovery, and details of the methods used to install the DN1800 water carrier pipeline.

With the exeption of the United States, Canada and Russia, oil has not been around in quantity near world centres of population. Production: in Western Europe is insignificant. Japan is without production as are Australia, Southern Africa, India; Brazil, Chile, New Zealand and China. The United States is, however, a large importer of crude oil. The very fact that oil is produced generally away from centres of population means that it has to be carried by sea to the area in which it is required. There is, therefore, a constant flow of oil around the world in very definite channels.

Bulk cargoes, including iron ore fines, must be shipped according to the rules agreed by the member states of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). One critical safety measure is the transportable moisture limit (T?ML) required for Group A cargoes (cargoes that may liquefy). A number of shipping incidents involving iron ore fines from India, where liquefaction of the cargo was suspected to be the cause, have brought the issue of iron ore fines T?ML into the spotlight. Extensive research has been undertaken by the major iron ore producers from Australia and Brazil to support the IMO in developing regulations for the shipment of iron ore fines. To this end, iron ore companies sponsored the AMIRA P1097 project to establish a modified T?ML test approach specific to iron ore fines. The project was undertaken by TUNRA Bulk Solids, CSIRO’s Centre for Bulk Solids and Particulate Technology and the University of Auckland, with project leadership provided by Creative Process Innovation. Coal is a very versatile resource, having variable characteristics and having potential for a wide variety of mar- kets. Australia has extensive deposits of black coal, although they are concentrated mainly in Eastern Australia. Assessments of the currently known reserves are related to the qualities of these reserves. Markets available to black coal fall into the broad groupings of metallurgical, fuel, conversion and miscellaneous markets and the requirements of these markets are related to coal characteristics. Market trends in Australia and on the export market are discussed and projected forward. By the end of this century Australian consumption of black coal could well be 100 million tonnes per annum, and, in the absence of any export restriction, a similar amount is likely to be exported. Currently defined black coal resources in Australia will last at least 600 years at these projected rates of consumption. Although the position appears satisfactory in considering the projected life of the black coal resources, there is a serious lack of detailed information on reserves, mining and preparation yields, quality and possible environmental restrictions. Action is required on three parallel courses: (1) a consistent, systematic and extensive survey of current coal resources in Australia, (2) accelerated exploration activity to define poorly prospected and potential areas, and (3) regular updating and extension of the knowledge of Australia's coal resources. This information would be of tremendous assistance for the formulation of a national energy policy on coal.

Until the early 1960s the world aluminium industry was dominated by six principle pro- ducers with integrated activities from bauxite mining to aluminium production. The growth in consumption of aluminium since that time and the emergence of additional producers has broadened the market for bauxite. In addition the increase in the optimum size of alumina refin- eries has influenced competing metal producers to unite in large joint ventures to minimize alumina costs. From these bases the paper examines present and likely future markets for Australian bauxite; differing marketing phil- osophies for serving those markets; factors influencing successful marketing; and the sources and relative strength of competition which Australia faces.

'Nothing happens until something is sold' This statement is not original - it is a necessary orientation for marketing industrial minerals. The most important single philosophy of marketing is that it recognises the consumer as the starting point. Production orientation is concerned with producing products that the customer might buy. Market orientation is concerned with finding the needs of the customer and how they can be satisfied. The difference between the two approaches can be recognised in company structures but the most tangible difference is in the approach by a company to selling and development. In other words, it is the market that decides what can be done with a mineral. The markets requirements dictate what mineral, what grade and what price will be paid. Therefore it follows that when pricing a product we should avoid taking the basic cost and arriving at a final selling price through a series of standard markups (unless government insists on it). We should start with the price the market can stand and work backwards to find out whether you have a profitable product or one that will fail because it is too dear. Naturally a thorough understanding of production costs is necessary particularly when marginal markets are concerned.

Marketing of mineral products has not yet succumbed to the degree of pre- dictability and exactitude that is fam- iliar to the engineer or metallurgist in pursuing their profession. Whilst the Great Market of the world economy dic- tates circumstances for the sale of min- eral products, there are more than just buyers and sellers in the determination of the revenue received by the producer. For the engineer or metallurgist he will be required to gain an understanding of these participants and of the peculiar languages of the market place. This will be only one of his tasks in learn- ing to communicate with society, as his responsibilities increase as he climbs the ladder of success. There is un- doubtedly a need for better statistical information so that producers and sell- ers can make an appropriate and earlier response to market conditions. There is in addition, a need for more aggressive concern by raw material producers for the development and promotion of better end use of their products. Undoubtedly the marketing of mineral products will be more influenced by the direct involv- ment of government agencies than has been the case in the past. Whilst that 1. The uranium markets are at present well covered by available producers. However the predicted increase in demand, recently reinforc- ed by the Arab oil crisis, will by, the early 1980s'outdistance supply. Current trends are towards light water reactors with-fast breeder reactors not expected to make any significant impact to the mid 1980s. The proposed lifting of the US embargo on the use of foreign uranium in US reactors will expand the market available to non US producers. A balancing in supply and demand worldwide will probably occur in the early 1980s. Australia's potential producers at present hold about 20 percent of the worlds U308 resources. Three companies, have contracts to supply nearly 10 900 tonnes of U308 between now and 1986 which represents about 1 percent of the predicted demand to 1986. Australian producers need to establish themselves more firmly in the market place in order that other countries will not replace us. Contracts can be written now which will allow for world market prices to be paid in the future, thus protecting the Australian producer.

Laboratory flotation tests were conducted to investigate the role of pH, zinc sulfate and potassium metabisulfite in the flotation of galena and marmatite in the Broken Hill orebody. Marmatite was depressed under alkaline conditions alone, however the addition of the two depressants, either individually or combined, resulted in the greatest selectivity. The use of zinc sulfate under alkaline conditions resulted in good selectivity whilst maintaining a high lead recovery. The addition of potassium metabisulfite under alkaline conditions reduced zinc recovery, but high additions reduced lead recovery. The addition of both depressants at alkaline pH produced the best result, with a lead concentrate of 72.6 per cent at 98 per cent recovery with less than four per cent zinc recovery.

In 1972 the Marra Mamba Iron Formation in the Lower Proterozoic Hamersley Iron Province of Western Australia was recognised as a stratigraphic horizon with significant potential for high grade iron ore reserves. Within the Newman area the Marra Mamba Iron Formation has been subdivided into four strati- graphic units: Lower BIF member, Middle BIF and shale member, Upper BIF member and Upper shale member - and a standard natural gamma log reference section compiled for the entire formation. The recognition of the Upper shale member as an additional unit contrasts to the previously proposed stratigraphy. Enrichment of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation to ore grade (0)8 percent calcined Fe) in the Newman area is restricted to the Upper BIF member and to a lesser extent to the Middle BIF and shale member. Typical ore from Orebody 29 is friable interbedded martite-ochreous goethite, signifi aptly different both physically and chemically from the Brockman Iron Formation ores of the Tom Price-Whaleback type. Large scale customer acceptance trials (in excess of 4 million tonnes) have shown that Marra Mamba ore crushed to fines and blended with Mt. Whaleback fines in a ratio of up to 15:85 forms an acceptable sinter feed.

A positive mill reconciliation at a mine is a double-edged-sword. Much back slapping happens. The bank and the board can’t get enough until the downside becomes apparent. Over a prolonged period, there becomes an issue with market perception and the potential for shareholders to be misinformed regarding the potential value of the project. In addition, there are impacts on mine scheduling, waste allocation (or lack thereof), government expectations, and the potential for misguided external assumptions regarding the ‘unexpected’ results. The PT Agincourt Resources Martabe Gold Mine has shown a significant under-call, in the order of 20% total gold metal, between the Mineral Resource (MR) estimates and Grade Control (GC) estimates since production commenced in 2012. Recently, the under-call has been reduced by incorporating the use of grade control drilling in the MR grade estimates. Despite recent improvements in reconciliation, drilling in 2017 at both Purnama and Barani open pits shows that infill reverse circulation (RC) drill holes often produce significantly higher grades than those predicted in the MR block model. Martabe gold and silver mine is situated in northern Sumatra and comprises several deposits in steep terrain that are required to be developed in the optimal sequence for the best possible Net Present Value (NPV) return on the project. In addition, the waste from the excavations is a by-product to be scheduled and used for construction of the tailings storage facility (TSF). These plans need to be aligned to ensure the tailings can be contained relative to the production rate. The TSF embankment construction includes potentially acid forming (PAF) waste that needs to be progressively sealed and rehabilitated to meet the closure requirements of the future.The mine is situated approximately 3 kilometres north of the township of Batangtoru in a seismically active zone between the off-shore subduction zone and the trans Sumatran fault. The mining operation currently includes two open cut pits with a third in development stage, an integrated TSF and dualpurpose valley-fill type waste rock storage facility (WRSF) and TSF embankment. Mine waste is used in construction of the WRSF / TSF embankment, including PAF waste rock, which needs to be scheduled for optimal use in construction activities in a manner that mitigates future acidic and metalliferous drainage (AMD) risks (Pearce and O’Kane, 2017).The Life-of-Mine (LOM) plans must satisfy both optimal pit development to maximise NPV and suitable delivery of waste for effective TSF construction matching the rate of rise of tailings, and consider AMD management, progressive rehabilitation and ultimately effective sustainable mine closure. At Martha Hill, the mining contractor is undertaking a wide range of activities from open pit mining, crushing, conveying, waste embankment construction and drainage.

Martha Mine is an open pit gold-silver mine, located within the township of Waihi, 150km southeast of Auckland and is operated as a joint venture between Normandy Mining Ltd. 67 %) as Manager and Otter Gold Mines Ltd. (33%). The deposit was historically mined, by underground methods from 1888 to 1952, producing 5.5 moz of gold and 30 moz of silver, from 11 mt of ore. The current operation began in 1988, producing, to June 1999 - 867,245 oz of gold and 5.5 moz of silver from 9.5 mt of ore. The licensed reserves were due to be mined out by late 2000. Consents were granted in December 1998 to allow the expansion of the operation through to 2007 accessing an additional 7.5 mt of ore at 3.4 gpt Au and 26.0 gpt Ag for 800,000 oz of gold and 6.4 moz of silver. The key elements of the expansion are: 1. Pit enlargement 2. Upgraded crushing and material handling facilities 3. Construction of a second tailings storage facility 4. Upgraded water treatment capacity 5. Increased operating capacity This paper presents an update of expansion activities to date.

Environmental incidents involving mine tailings and waste rock inevitably become highly publicised and serve to damage the credibility of the entire industry. The recent serious incident involving a spill from a Romanian mine, was blamed for triggering æone of the worst environmental catastrophes in Eastern EuropeÆ. It is important to clearly demonstrate to the general public that these incidents are not representative of the industry as a whole. Where such incidents have occurred, the causes are generally related to poor design and/or construction, inadequate supervision and/or monitoring and maintenance, lack of independent expertise, inadequate risk identification and treatment and no provision to ensure that rehabilitation and long term management of the site occurs. Many people are unaware that these issues have been considered and provided for at the Martha Mine. Despite the fact that the first tailings storage facility has performed very well over fifteen years of operation, the long term safety and security of the tailings storage facilities continues to be questioned and debated by the public. The best way to address this is to provide quality information to enable a better understanding amongst the general public.

Conditions encountered at a recently completed brownfields mining project provided valuable insight into, and development of, techniques for working in and around known underground mining voids in an open cut environment. The careful application of underground blasting principles to a pit environment and successful excavation whilst maintaining appropriate stand-off distances were two primary areas of innovation enabling the success of the project.Mary Mac Hill is a gold deposit situated less than 2 km south-west of the town of Laverton, Western Australia. It is owned and mined by Crescent Gold Limited. Previous underground mining by various other mining companies has left an extensive network of underground horizontal development, subvertical stopes and shafts, some of which daylighted at surface. This was identified as potentially posing substantial risks, which would prevent the application of conventional mining methods. Two major stopes were located under a hard banded iron ridge topped by a peak of cap, connected variously by narrow drives and vertical development. Due to the proximity of the first of these stopes to the surface, its dimensions and governed by procedures and advice provided by externally engaged engineers, Crescent Gold could not access the area of the ridge immediately overlying the stope using conventional open cut mining methods. This was the first of many hurdles surmounted in mining this deposit.The following report outlines how the challenges this geometrically complex deposit presented. Solving these problems enabled the team to mine the contained gold ore to a completed design, without subjecting personnel or mining equipment to harm due to a void breach incident. This paper outlines the numerous complications and difficulties Mary Mac Hill posed and explains the strategies developed to overcome them.
