The Silver Swan nickel mine is located at the Black Swan Nickel Project, 53 km north east of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. The Silver Swan orebody is a massive sulphide nickel deposit dipping 70¦ east with an average in situ grade of 14 per cent. Mining of the massive orebody is by Mechanised Ramp Cut and Fill (MRCF). A mining recovery of 98 per cent and minimising dilution are primary goals in extracting the high-grade ore. Placing a distinguishable marker bed (working platform) on rock fill was identified as a key method to achieving these goals. Gravel from a pit located onsite was considered the most suitable material for the marker beds. Research undertaken to design the marker beds using the gravel revealed conventional methods used in mining would not suffice, but that road stabilisation methods could be a viable alternative. Trials used a road recycler to mix cement and gravel in situ and several test beds were constructed on the surface to determine the final design. The trials attempted to replicate a marker bedÆs life cycle of construction and placement and mucking of ore from the marker bed. Testing the marker bed for strength for use as a working platform was completed using a Clegg Hammer; good correlation to a Clegg Impact Value and the compressive strength of the stabilised gravel was found. This paper describes the use of a road stabilisation machine, tests conducted, monitoring and marker bed design and discusses underground placement of the marker bed and its performance.

One of the key challenges for the mining industry globally is the rehabilitation of mine waste, and Queensland is no exception. Out of pit waste structures including waste rock dumps and tailings storage facilities, create novel landforms which require ongoing maintenance and pose risks to the environment and sometimes to communities. Where multiple mines co-exist, such as parts of Queensland’s Bowen Basin, individual mines can often be constrained by adjoining operations. This presents opportunities for broader rehabilitation strategies to be considered, more than the current single mine focus, that may provide better environmental outcomes for a region. Given recent global disasters involving tailings storage facilities, and our team’s endeavours to drive Queensland to achieve leading practice in mined land rehabilitation, we are exploring the potential to maximise in-pit tailings disposal opportunities for coalmines through shared waste management strategies. A shared waste management strategy is where two (or more) mines, owned by different companies and operated under different environmental permits, transport tailings from one mine to the other in close proximity, for disposal in a disused pit. This would reduce the number of waste structures to be built, operated, rehabilitated, and managed in perpetuity. Our objectives are to identify and remove barriers to tailings transfers between sites to:  minimise environmental risk  minimise long-term liability of managing mining waste and associated structures  support improved outcomes for the local community. To determine the scale of coal waste disposal practices in Queensland, internal data and publicly available imagery was analysed by the Department of Environment and Science in 2022. Approximately 6500 ha of land in Queensland is utilised for coalmine tailings storage facilities or codisposal areas, with ≈ 3700 ha of this being out of pit.

Banded Iron Formations or more commonly known as BIF are sedimentary rock formations with alternating silica-rich layers and iron-rich layers that are typically composed of iron oxides (hematite and magnetite), iron-rich carbonates, and/or iron-rich silicates. Considering the depletion of highgrade iron ore reserves in South Africa, there is a need to maximise resource utilisation through the exploitation of sterile resources in particular BIF material which makes up greater than 65 per cent of current reserves. BIF, like most resources, is non-renewable and the deposition of BIF is thought to have come about by the reaction of Fe2+ ions in the ocean water with dissolved oxygen billions of years ago. BIF ore derived from the Limpopo region in South Africa (SA) located in the Penge Iron Formation is according to Cairncross, Kramers and Villa (2018) equivalent to that contained within the Asbestos Hills Iron Formation of the Transvaal Supergroup in the Northern Cape, SA. Considering that these are one of the largest iron ore deposits in SA, the case study involved mineralogical characterisation followed by beneficiation of BIF from these two regions to ascertain the comparability. Coarse and fines gravity separation comprising of Heavy Liquid Separation/Dense Media Separation on the +1.18 mm size fraction and shaking table on the -1.18 mm size fraction was conducted to ascertain whether an on-grade product or blended feedstock could be produced. The Limpopo mixed and Northern Cape conglomerate BIF samples achieved similar overall responses due to the conglomerate sample containing 15.3 per cent additional -1.18 mm fines. A combined coarse and fines product grading at 60 per cent Fe could be achieved at a yield and recovery of 43.9– 53.0 per cent and 62.2–63.8 per cent respectively. Increasing the grade to 63 per cent Fe reduces the overall recovery by 13.3 per cent. At the higher target grade, the contaminant specifications could be achieved for both samples. The Northern Cape laminated BIF sample is the most promising of the three samples studied. At the two iron target grades overall yields and iron recoveries of 72.9–65.4 per cent and 85.2– 80.2 per cent was achieved. In both instances the silica grade exceeded the product specification, however if the silica content is the driver the target iron grade should increase to 63.32 per cent. This will result in a minimal decrease in recovery of 0.4 per cent. The promising results of this study indicate that coarse beneficiation of BIF material is possible. These ore types could be blended with superior grade products to improve overall yields and recoveries or sold directly at a 63 per cent Fe product grade whilst sacrificing 0.4–13.3 per cent recovery.

The current copper ore handling systems in use at Xstrata CopperÆs Mount Isa Copper Operations are up to 33 years old and have hoisted over 160 Mt at a rate of around 6 Mtpa. The mineÆs production profile is increasing in line with the optimum life of mine plan to over 6.6 Mtpa, which requires a system utilisation and reliability above that previously achieved. Copper ore is hoisted up the U62 shaft, which forms the central part of the U62 ore handling system. In theory this system can cope with the duty planned if the bottleneck is only the U62 winder. To achieve the planned production rate will require increased focus on reliability of each component in the ore handling system so that ore is available at the shaft for hoisting whenever the shaft is available, and the shaft is available for the maximum practical time. Increased availability will be achieved through the outcomes of the study of each component in the U62 system, and the internal ore handling systems that deliver ore from as far as 2 km laterally and 700 m vertically from the U62 shaft. The true capacity of each component is being determined and current performance is being measured with the aim of improving performance through root cause analysis and engineering out the causes of delays. The program began in March 2004 and this paper describes the progress achieved as of April 2005.

In the minerals industry allocating capital for setting up a new project or for upgrading an existing facility usually requires that a compromise be found between the initial cost of equipment, its operating performance and on-going operating costs. To maximise the return on the investment usually requires that various possible combinations and layouts of equipment be assessed. This task is both difficult and time consuming. Computer simulation can be used as a means of determining the expected operating performance of a range of alternate equipment configurations. Simulation is a particularly important technique for analysis as it is one of the few approaches that allows the analyst to take into account the variability inherent in a mining process. While computer simulation is a well established technique its use, until recent years, has been limited to large organisations with access to substantial computing facilities. However, with the current availability of low cost computing platforms combined with easily understood animated displays, simulation is now becoming more widely used across the industry.

This paper deals with the design and implementation of a 17 MW (nominal) surface cooling installation at Impala Platinum No 14 shaft located in Rustenburg, North West Province, South Africa.The cooling requirements included the installation of a surface ammonia refrigeration plant complete with the storage of hot and cold mine service water for underground use. It was also necessary to install a surface bulk air-cooling facility, which cools 400 kg/s of ventilation air going to the underground workings. Primary cooling is to the surface bulk air cooler. The cooling duty of a surface bulk air cooler is heavily dependent on the ambient wet-bulb temperature. Because of the daily wet-bulb temperature variation in this part of the world, use was made of a cold thermal storage facility of four million litres. The excess chilled water is stored during the night, for use by the main drilling shift during the day. This keeps the refrigeration machines as close as possible to full load during the summer, thus maximising the use of the capital expenditure. This paper discusses the control philosophy used to maximise the cooling output, as well as the thermal process. The project consisted of two phases resulting from the underground development phases of the mine. The first phase started in January 1999 and was commissioned by the end of the same year in record time. The final commissioning of the second phase took place at the end of 2002. The most difficult part of the construction phase was the tunnelling of a subsurface air duct from the bulk air cooler to the operating vertical shaft. This was done without disruption to the hoisting of men, material and ore in the shaft. Owing to the size of the refrigeration machines, the ammonia quantities involved and the application on a mine (no ammonia can go underground, either in the service water or in the mine air) special precautions had to be taken. South Africa has developed high standards for ammonia refrigeration plants used on mines, which will be partially dealt with in this paper.

Increasing orebody complexity, restrictions in ground access, and longer lead times for disturbance approvals, have generated the need for the Resource Development Team within Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO), to explore optimised drill design techniques that deliver resource conversion value while maximising program outcomes. In response to this challenge, the Team initiated a case study to produce an AI assisted/designed drill program using a non-machine learning AI. The case study involved the assessment and implementation of an AI generated drill program at one of RTIO’s Pilbara iron ore deposits, located in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia. The Mineral Resource is currently classified as 100 per cent Inferred. Access constraints inherent to topography, and the presence of exclusions zones have prevented adequate drilling coverage, resulting in lower resource confidence and a poor definition of the orebody extents and geometry. The drill campaign, planned in Q1 2023, needs to consider access constraints, complex topology and the limitations related to additional ground clearance, while addressing the requirement of improving orebody knowledge. The drill plan had to address two objectives. The first and main aim of drilling was to upgrade the Resource Classification to allow for possible conversion to Ore Reserve. The input for this objective was a volumetric representation of the areas currently not meeting pre-defined quantitative Resource Classification upgrade criteria. The second objective was to better define the orebody extents and geometry. For the second objective, the input to the drilling optimiser was a volumetric representation (blocks) of the areas of high uncertainty in the mineralisation/waste boundary, which were defined using an indicator conditional simulation technique. The drilling optimiser output was a range of compliant drill plans. A set of KPIs based on economic and orebody knowledge criteria were used to assess the plans and to select the most optimal drill design to be drilled in 2023. The geology and management teams were able to make better informed, objective decisions using the trade-off between cost and orebody knowledge gained. As part of the assessment, the AI generated plans were compared to our current planning practises. The AI assisted plans, when gauged against the project KPIs, showed clear and measurable improvements in both meeting project objectives and in managing operational risk.

Mine operators use grade control to determine the destination of each block of material in the mine. In polymetallic mines, grades are best expressed in dollars: the Net Smelter Return, NSR, per tonne. To estimate NSRs, geologists working on grade control develop models for each geometallurgical domain in the mine. These models may incorporate observations on the mineralogy and grain sizes of the material being examined. The site’s mill operators contribute to the models by providing geologists with statistical analyses that relate assay results and mineralogical compositions to metallurgical parameters, such as the rates of recovery of each economic metal to each of the concentrates produced, and the compositions of those concentrates. The team responsible for sales and marketing of the site’s products contributes to the NSR models by providing details of the costs of shipping concentrates to smelters and refineries; and by providing figures that are specified in the smelter contracts, such as the payability of the metals in each concentrate and the fees charged by the smelter. The mill operators also provide, for the NSR models, equations to estimate the rates of recovery of deleterious materials to each concentrate. Deleterious materials comprise mostly halogens and amphoteric elements, both of which reduce the efficiency of smelters. Furthermore, deleterious materials such as antimony and arsenic may be poisonous to people and to the environment. The sales and marketing team provide specifics of the penalties that smelters impose upon deleterious materials. These penalties may reduce NSRs by tens of percent, possibly to levels below the cut-off grade. Thus, in the blocks that are subject to grade control, mine geologists monitor not only the concentrations of economic metals, but also the presence and abundance of deleterious materials. The preparation and maintenance of models, to estimate NSRs and to assess changes in the levels of potentially toxic materials to be mined, requires close and continuing consultation between corporate departments. There must be strong communication of mine geologists with the mill operators; with the people who market the mine’s concentrates; and, should there be a risk of encountering toxic levels of deleterious materials, with the mine’s health, safety and environmental officers. This co-operation could require radical changes in the structure of many organisations. However, experience suggests that such changes can significantly improve the profitability of a mine.

Long before a modern mine commences operations it has already become a wealth of information. After start up, it can generate enormous quantities of data û especially with semi-automated data acquisition by instrumented mine equipment. However, much of this data is of limited use for evaluation of (potential) performance unless it links in some way to the site business model. An underlying reason for this waste of data is that the different cultures, financial, technical, community, environmental, etc not only have many areas of interest but also have very different conceptual models by which they evaluate performance. It is too ambitious to attempt to bring all of these cultures together û in a single step. However, the success of the Mine to MillTM project has demonstrated that substantial operational value can be added by using a more integrated approach to comminution. The next logical step is to integrate measurement and then to track performance from orebody model to saleable product and waste disposal. From resource to product also represents a path from very sparse, highly variable data to much more detailed measurement and more representative sampling. However, in both cases the data collected is strongly focused on the technical requirements û not on the business model. This paper considers how to define at least some of the key decision points in terms of some case studies. Performance data from many areas might be used to derive simple models which can then be used for forecasting and optimisation of planning.

The mining industry continues to faces significant challenges due to increasing resource constraints (quality of ore bodies, water, energy, human resources) and increasing license to operate requirements (safety, health, environment, location) from society, employees and shareholders. Technology advancements and hence research are necessary to ensure that the industry remains viable in this changing environment. Collaborative research is an important part of a company's research portfolio and offers the opportunity for the industry to work on generic issues that it is facing. Obvious benefits include the reduced cost to individual companies by sharing the costs, the opportunity to leverage government funding and the opportunity to conduct longer term projects resulting in skills development (PhD and MSc). Limitations of collaborative research include the reduced focus on company specific issues and the loss of competitive advantage from owning the outcomes of the research. The challenge for researchers and research managers is for them to demonstrate the value derived from longer term, pre-competitive collaborative research. The competitive advantage is not necessarily derived only from the outcomes of the research but rather from the company's ability to direct the research, translate the generic research outcomes to address company specific issues and to implement improvements at its operations. Implementation remains the greatest challenge. In this paper, case studies of selected collaborative research projects are presented to demonstrate key success factors required for implementation of research outcomes. This is an ABSTRACT ONLY. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.

In the 1989 best-seller The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, the author, Stephen Covey, highlights the importance of maintaining not only ‘production’, but also, ‘production capacity’. When operating a modern flotation concentrator, production is often measured in terms of concentrate tonnage, tonnes milled and plant utilisation. There are very few metrics that focus directly on flotation equipment condition in relation to performance, which is analogous to Covey’s production capacity principal. It is evident on many mine sites that flotation equipment condition is not monitored on a proactive basis and that the prevailing culture is to wait for a failure, before addressing an issue.This paper discusses examples of how poor equipment condition can lead to production loss through poor metallurgical performance. Actual examples are given where these problems have occurred in operating plants. Sub-level caving with bottom ore drawing has gained wide acceptance in rich, soft, low magnetic iron ores because it provides moderate ore dilution and ore losses. The main problem here is the high rock pressure exerted on sub-level drives situated in the sub-level sill pillars. To reduce this effect, the ore block is divided into panels. This paper illustraes the method of determining the maximum panel width providing low maintenance cost of sub-level drives.

In 2012, a single module heavy medium cyclone plant (HMP) was installed at the Glencore Zinc’s (then Xstrata Zinc) McArthur River lead zinc mine. The HMP formed the first part of the MRM Phase 3 Project to increase run of mine (ROM) capacity from 2.4 to 5.5 Mt/a.The purpose of the HMP is to remove liberated gangue from the crusher product at minimal loss of valuable mineral. The McArthur ores are very finely disseminated requiring a fine primary grind size prior to rougher flotation. Rejecting waste prior to grinding therefore offers significant power and grinding media savings. The plant was designed to treat only those ores with a reasonable upgrade ratio at the target zinc recovery across the HMP of 95%.On this basis, a 1.8 Mt/a single module plant was built based on 250 t/h feed rate and 82% availability. In contrast to existing base metal heavy medium plants in Australia, the MRM Flow sheet utilised the principles in modern coal heavy medium cyclone plant design. Since commissioning, the plant feed rate has been significantly increased and is now normally operated up to 540 t/h (dry basis).Although this throughput increase is partially due to debottlenecking work, it is also attributable to the conservative design parameters for base metal heavy medium cyclone circuits in comparison to those used in equivalent coal circuits.This paper discusses Flow sheet design and compares traditional base metal design parameters with those achieved at MRM and those of modern coal plants. It provides information on plant capital and operating costs and the net savings realised by its installation. Thank you chairman, good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. In my talk this afternoon I intend to cover a brief history, some of the recent experiences and an overview of the McArthur River project.If we consider the themes of this forum, Obstacles and Opportunities, I can confidently say that in attempting to develop the McArthur River deposit Mount Isa Mines Limited (MIM) must have encountered almost every obstacle that can be imagined. However the large size and the high grade of the deposit has ensured an opportunity, from which it is very difficult to walk away from.The McArthur River Here's Your Chance (HYC) Deposit is located in the Northern Territory of Australia. It was discovered by Mount Isa Mines Limited geologists in 1955 and is one of the largest known sedimentary stratiform zinc-lead-silver deposits. The deposit has been the subject of numerous investigations and considerable expenditure culminating in a major feasibility study in 1979. There were a number of factors which prevented development, these being the size of the project, the fine grained mineralization, geographical location, market, social and capital cost. The latter had been estimated in the 1979 study to be $800 million at that time.

Mr. Chairman, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for asking me to your conference, with its most fundamental and appropriate topic of 'Investment in Mining'. I must confess at the outset that I am one of those Australians who has rarely visited your fair land of New Zealand. This is in fact only my third visit, with all three related to Institute Conferences, and all much too brief. In so many ways your country provides a counterpoise to ours, despite the obvious disparities in size and population. And I am not only referring to the Bledisloe Cup! We would certainly each be much more lonely without the other, in this strange long-lost corner of the globe û if globes can have corners. Such an important factor in common in our shared heritages has been the mineral industry we have won from our alluvials and our rocks û especially for gold. So much of the major mineral developments which have supplied the world's appetite for metals and fuels in the past two hundred years has come from the countries settled in that period by people from Europe, especially those from the British Isles. So much of the technology for mineral and metal extraction has come from the skills of those people in New Zealand and Australia. And so much of the further development of metal processing and manufacturing of productive equipment has come from those people and from their cousins throughout the world. It is, I believe, a fair question to ask why we have failed to build on those early and considerable successes, and why we have in so many ways apparently been so content to allow others to add value to our raw materials, and to take our technological developments on to levels far beyond those that our domestic markets could sustain.

This paper presents measurement and analysis of the dynamic response of a five-storey building to very high frequency excitation (>100 Hz) from blasting vibrations originating from a contiguous excavation of rock. Velocity response measurements in the rock and on the structure were employed to calculate the time-correlated dynamic displacement response of the building to blasting. Time-correlated structure response measurements are needed to advance the understanding of the response of urban structures to high-frequency excitation. Current regulations and understanding are based upon measurements of the response of one- to two-storey residential structures by 10 to 40 Hz excitation. The extension of these observations to taller structures when excited by high-frequency excitation needs to be investigated further.Measurements show that the amplification patterns at the ground level and top of the structure match or are lower than that observed by the US Bureau of Mines (Siskind et al, 1980) for the shorter residential structures. They decrease with increasing peak particle velocity. From the measurements, the global transverse shear strains found by differentiating ground floor and top displacements were calculated to be 12 µstrains. Time-correlated bottom and top of structure displacements show that building response may be more reflective of wave propagation up the structure than whole-structure inter-storey drift.In addition, a 3D model was used to compare computed displacements and strains to measured results. Modelled responses varied considerably, both in magnitude and location of the maximum strain. No conclusion can be made regarding the best 3D model to employ to simulate building response. More data such as motions measured at many points in the structure are needed. Maximum inter-storey transverse shear strains calculated with the model were found through the acceleration excitation and were less than 12 µstrains for 37 mm/s rock motion excitation. The inter-storey transverse shear strains calculated with rock displacement input were less than that found with the acceleration excitation.CITATION:Dowding, C, Aimone-Martin, C and Abeel, P, 2015. The terms measured resources and proven reserves denote the highest level of estimation confidence in all of the major classification schemes. But what do they really bring to today’s project or mine with respect to production planning and expectations? Initial reserve declaration does not need measured resources, just indicated resources. Economic viability of a project is assessed on total reserves with nary a bonus for the amount of proven reserves. Production plans are based on grade and tonnage goals that may only coincidently correspond to proven reserves. So are the measured and proven categories still relevant? Historically, and almost exclusively in underground mines, companies only allowed mining in areas of proven reserves. Some companies still follow that philosophy. But many others will mine a mixture of probable and proven reserves without hesitation. Also what of the undeveloped project in a new district – what is to be made of their declared measured resources and proven reserves? Measured resources are commonly set either by some type of proximity to data scheme or a matter of ‘feel’ based on the qualified person’s experience. The parameters for reserve conversion focus on the project as a whole and then a portion becomes classified as proven reserves almost solely based on whether the resource category is measured. So should the mining industry continue to use these categories of resource and reserve classification? This paper will present arguments about making these categories once again more relevant. A more disciplined usage of these categories may re-introduce their relevancy in public disclosures of resources and reserves. As well a more consistent usage in operations may lead to increased confidence in managing production targets and costs.

A field investigation by making use of the seismic method has been carried out in order to comprehend the mechanism of rockburst and gas outburst and their predictive measures. The seismometers were so arranged both on the surface and underground as to enclose a mining panel. Seismic signals detected by the array were recorded and processed by the 32-kwords computer system. At present the system is available for analysing the source location and Richter's scale of each event and for visualizing the distribution of seismic foci and released energy at any mining stage. The magnitude distribution of events can be regarded as a comparable index of the seismic activities among mining panels. An analysis of the spatial density distribution of seismic energy in the mining panel can be useful to distinguish a highly stressed zone from stress released areas. The energy released curve or the rate of energy release determined from seismic data is also a good indication of the seismicity.

There are various methods currently in use to determine detonation performance of bulk explosive products including velocity of detonation (VOD), high speed photographic analysis, fragmentation analysis and unconfined detonation of samples. For assessment prior to detonation the current practice is limited to a measurement of cup density. This paper presents additional techniques that have been developed to provide measurement and assessment of bulk explosive products. Techniques applicable prior to detonation include a mobile laboratory to allow on-site chemical and physical analysis of sensitised products and ‘in-hole density’ measurement to monitor the in-hole density during sleep time. Assessment of detonation performance is achieved using detonation pressure sensors. These sensors allow measurement of detonation pressure, average VOD, propagation time and magnitude of the pressure induced in the explosive column by detonation of adjacent blastholes.CITATION:Cavanough, G, Torrance, A C, Rock, J and Olsson, A, 2015.
