During the 1960s chalcocite ore was mined from the Black Rock open cut. A large amount of this uneconomic material was not treated by the No 3 Concentrator at the time and as a consequence a surface stockpile was created which contained 750 000 tonnes of material at an average of 1.5 per cent copper.Laboratory trials indicated that due to oxidation, an average of 25 per cent of the copper was water soluble and the remaining copper was leachable using a sulphate/ferriclbacterial leach. On the basis of these trials it was decided to investigate the feasibility of producing copper via a leach SX-EW process. The investigation proved the process was feasible, so began the design, construction and commissioning of a 10 tpd (cathode copper) Copper Leach SX-EW Pilot Plant. CMPS Pty Limited in a joint venture with John Holland Engineering Pty Limited were awarded the turnkey contract for the design, construction and commissioning of the Pilot Plant.

Many mining companies, by their remoteness of location from source of power, have to generate their own power and must experience the same problem that had to be met when deciding to increase the capacity of the power station. At present the Company is treating approximately 54,000 tons of ore mined per month, and the present shift average load. is approximately 8,500 kW. at 0.8 power factor, generated at the power plant, the observed peak load being 10,500 kW.It is proposed to increase the tonnage of ore treated to include 36,000 tons of copper ore, in addition to the present 54,000 tons of lead ore. The average load is estimated to be approximately' 16,000 kW. with a peak load of 17,500 kW. The estimate provides for power of 1,000 kW. to be supplied to the north end leases in the next 12 months, also for increased ventilation in the mines.There are installed in the main power station three turbo alternator sets each of 5,000 kW.; normally two sets are run in parallel and one set is a standby unit. A 12,500 kW. set is being installed and proposed loading with the increased tonnage will require the 12,500 kW. set and one 5,000 kW. set, or alternatively, the three 5,000 kW. sets When the 12,500 kW. set is down for service. Glencore’s Mount Isa Mines Limited (MIM) operates the Mount Isa open cut and underground copper (Cu) and zinc-lead (Zn/Pb) mines near Mount Isa in Queensland, Australia. Tailings from processed Cu and Zn-Pb ore is contained in a 1,315 ha shallow (< 35 m deep) multi-cell valley fill tailings storage facility (TSF). Static geochemical testing conducted by MIM over the life of mine (LoM) verifies that the Cu, and Zn-Pb tailings has a wide range in sulfide content and diverse mineralogy with significant acid neutralising capacity (ANC) in some samples. The tailings are predominantly classified as potentially acid forming (PAF) using static analytical methods. Kinetic leach testing using free draining columns and humidity cell tests simulating tailings placed on the surface of the TSF suggest that the tailings samples are likely to remain non-acid forming (NAF) for 10 to 40 years under aerial exposure, and much longer than this under saturated conditions within the TSF. During this period of weathering, as ANC is depleted, the neutral pH drainage may contain elevated concentrations of some elements including sulfate, manganese and zinc. The 50 million tonne Mount Morgan gold-copper deposit (4.99 g/t Au, 0.72 per cent Cu) was an irregular pipe-like body of quartz and pyrite, with subordinate chalcopyrite, magnetite and gold. Mineralisation was hosted by the Middle Devonian Mine Corridor Volcanics which occur as a roof pendant within the Late Devonian Mount Morgan Tonalite. On three sides, the deposit was enclosed by a series of normal, concave, listric faults and surrounded by outward-dipping Mine Corridor Volcanics. The tonalite which bounded the western side of the deposit transgresses the domal structure with no apparent interference. A pipe of intense, texturally-destructive, quartz-sericite-chlorite ¦ pyrite underlay and partly surrounded the deposit.The volcanic setting of the deposit, its shape, metal content and associated footwall alteration are consistent with a subsea-floor replacement origin for the gold-copper mineralisation. Mineralogical studies have confirmed the deposit has been recrystallised and annealed by a thermal metamorphic event, most likely the intrusion of the Mount Morgan Tonalite. Pyrrhotite Pipe mineralisation replaces annealed massive pyrite, suggesting that it formed during retrogressive metasomatism associated with tonalite emplacement. Telluride minerals have a close association with chalcopyrite, and no evidence for a late telluride paragenetic stage was observed. Telluride mineralisation is inferred to be genetically related to the massive sulphide mineralisation, and a separate magmatogenic origin for this mineralisation is discounted.

THE irregularity of the Mount Morgan ore body presents problems other than those for mining only. For irregularity of outline is coupled with irregularity of grade, and the ore varies so rapidly from profitable to non-profitable, and from highly siliceous to highly pyritic, that the task of estimating quantities and values of ore reserves is manifestly rendered a difficult one, while the actual disposal Of the broken ore demands constant supervision.Four classes of ore are handled. The oxidized ore, cheaply mined and cheaply treated, is obtained by quarrying from the top of the mountain. Below the 315-ft. mine level (measured from the original summit) sulphide ore comes in, and this is divided into siliceous sulphide ore (too siliceous for economic smelting), sulphide ore suitable for smelting, and ore too poor either to be smelted or to be treated by wet process with the siliceous ore. The Mount Morgan mine occupies a unique place in the mining history of Australia and although not as glamorous during the second phase of its existence, it made a significant contribution to the technical and financial history of the nation throughout its life. The stories of the intrigue surrounding its discovery and early operation, the enormous return received by its original investors in its first five years as a public company, its influence on the local, national and international scene to its final closure have been documented in many publications, the most recent and authoritative being by John Kerr (1982). Institute publications as far back as 1911 have documented details of the mining, metallurgical and engineering practices of the two companies which worked the 100 or so acres which were alleged to be `the richest single gold mine in the world'. Within the Institute records appear the names of Presidents, Institute Medal recipients and others connected with Mount Morgan who have played an important part in the Institute history.

The design of crawler-mounted conveyor belts installed for the handling of brown coal in open cuts is described.INTRODUCTIONThe State Electricity Commission of Victoria operates two brown coal open cuts at Yallourn, Victoria. The larger of these cuts produces n million tons per year of brown coal containing 67 per cent. moisture, and the smaller, at Yallourn North, produces 1-1 million tons of coal, with a moisture content of 50 per cent. A further open cut at Morwell with projected output of 9-10 million tons per year is in the course of development. In the larger Yallourn open cut coal is excavated by means of conventional bucket chain and bucket wheel dredgers and transport is by electric locomotives and saddle bottom trucks running on 90 cm. gauge railway tracks. At Yallourn North, coal until recently has been largely won by 3i and 5 cu. yd. electric shovels and transported by large diesel-enginedmotor trucks. Despite the current downturn, coal remains an important commodity in the Australian economy. Increasing coal resource development has resulted in increasing competition for land use in coal mining regions across the country with communities and other stakeholders becoming more adept at articulating their concerns regarding this competition in a range of traditional and social forms of media. In this environment, obtaining and maintaining a social licence to operate (SLO) is problematic and has been identified as the fourth greatest risk facing the international mining industry.This research presents the findings from a longitudinal study on how Australian newspapers frame the views of coal mining stakeholders across each stage of the coal mining life cycle. News stories from national, state and regional newspapers in 2000, 2006 and 2013 were analysed.Over the study period, there have been significant changes in the coal mining themes being covered by Australian newspapers, the number of stories being published, the number of newspapers covering coal mining stories, and the diversity of stakeholders being quoted. How do the dominant themes in media communication change over time? The financial evaluation of mining projects drives a whole range of decision-making regarding project viability, project design, operating models and closure philosophy. Net Present Value is a financial assessment approach that is pervasive across the industry and has been widely criticised for driving short-term thinking and leading to poor long-term outcomes and future unfunded closure liabilities. But are there alternative models and what are the impediments to their implementation? This paper aims to outline current and past mine closure practices in the mining industry and questions these outcomes given the changing shareholder investment requirement for alignment with sustainable Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) goals. Examples are presented of closure programs planned and executed in the later stage of the life-of-mine and explores the benefits that could have been realised by integrating these into concurrent production operations. Examples of simultaneous mine development and closure execution and their benefits are presented, and their relevance to corporate investor branding. This paper also discusses the concept of investor project ownership through to sustainable closure and outlines alternative approaches to responsible, sustainable mine closure. We explore the current mining industry divestment practices to remove closure liability from the balance sheet. These underlying financial practices and Net Present Value approach to Mine Closure and alternative approaches are discussed.

Pasminco is actively addressing the optimal utilisation of the known orebody at the Broken Hill mine, in addition to actively exploring for economic mineralisation in the region. As part of the policy of better utilising the known mineralisation a major upgrade of geological systems at the mine was initiated. The software chosen for this change was Maptek's Vulcan, mainly because of the ease of use of this package. Rather than having numerous data sources in varying software packages the mine aimed to limit interfaces and packages. The decision to upgrade the mine's software was not taken lightly, especially in view of the inature stage of Broken Hill mining operations. However, the current mine life of Pasminco Broken Hill mine is I I years, which is longer than many new mines setting up in Australia today. Also, a more sophisticated system brings with it a better understanding of the economic mineralisation, possibly extending the mine life further. The process of moving the Broken Hill databases into Vulcan was a huge task which included, database transfer, digitising, wire framing, modelling and eventually ore resource calculation. To ensure the validity of the new ore resource accounting system, the existing system was run as a duplicate for the introductory year, providing a comparison and if necessary a safety net. The benefits of such a change, however, became apparent almost immediately. Area geologists realised the opportunity to revise geological interpretations in their areas of responsibility, enabling them to obtain a better understanding of orebody morphology. Three- diniensional analysis provides an excellent method by which review of ore targets both in the underground and mine lease exploration areas can he made. As each new find of mineralisation enters the system and hopefully extends the mine life, the opportunities for further mineral exploration in Broken Hill area by Pasminco are enhanced.

Schalker Eisenhütte und Maschinenfabrik GmbH, Nordic Minesteel Technologies and Bombardier Transportation have developed an evaluation tool that considers the main cost drivers of the rail, truck and conveyor haulage systems on the market today. In almost every circumstance, the advantages of a haulage solution are clear. A haulage system is outlined that is fully automated, including driverless operation, and that provides increased tonnage, safety and equipment life and reduced maintenance downtime. Suppliers of products and services have a pivotal role in sustainable development in the mining and minerals industry. Reputable suppliers know their products and services, and the industry, and have unique knowledge of these in relation to their customerÆs needs. Petroleum hydrocarbon suppliers, in particular, impact upon a mineÆs sustainability because of the extensive reach of petroleum hydrocarbons into the mining and minerals life-cycle. The petroleum hydrocarbon life-cycle is a useful framework to enable engagement between supplier and customer on the issue of sustainability. The life-cycle starts with supply of fuels, lubricants and services at the mine, through to plant operation and maintenance, transport of mined products, ship loading, and finally through to mineral processing and other downstream value-adding. There are barriers to leveraging supplierÆs capabilities which have to be overcome before the industry will gain the potential benefits from such supplier engagement.

In November 1996 the NSW Minister for Mineral Resources, Hon Bob Martin MP, commissioned ACiL Economics and Policy Pty Ltd to conduct a wide ranging review of safety within the New South Wales mining industry.The review was a response to a disturbing number of fatalities which had occurred in the industry during the Minister's term of office together with a number of alarming near misses where serious failures in mining systems had occurred. Shortly after the review was commissioned, four mine workers died at Gretley Colliery near Newcastle. An inquiry is currently being conducted into the incident.

The Mount Isa Copper Concentrator was commissioned in 1973. Since commissioning some significant upgrades have been undertaken such as: • the replacement of the rod mill/ball mill circuit with AG mills and the subsequent conversion of the AG mills to SAG Mills. • the introduction of columns as retreat cleaners in 1987, then reallocated as prefloat cleaners in 1994 and rougher cleaners in 1996.• the repurposing of some rougher capacity to preflotation roughing to remove carbonaceous pyrite and talc in 1994.• the introduction of a Jameson Cell for preflotation cleaning in 2000. • the expansion of the rougher and cleaner circuits in 2002 with the inclusion of 6 x 100 m3 Wemco cells to replace the capacity lost to preflotation and to increase residence time and improve recovery. In 2013 work commenced to replace the cleaner circuit after 40 years of operation. The new cleaner circuit, consisting of 3 x B5400/18 Jameson Cells, replaced the rougher cleaner columns, cleaners, recleaners and retreat Agitair banks and was commissioned in Sep 2015. The new cleaner circuit was configured as two cells in series producing the final concentrate and a cleaner scavenger cell to supplement the existing Wemco cleaner scavenger cells. The study commenced in October 2012, to understand the basic ecology of the spotted-tailed quoll (Dasyurus maculatus) and to confirm whether the species utilise previously mined land on the Mt Owen mine site that was rehabilitated in 1996 to 2011, as part of their home range. The spotted-tailed quoll is a widely distributed marsupial carnivore that is listed as rare or threatened in every state in which it occurs. The species is a forest-dependent marsupial carnivore that occupies a wide range of habitat types (Long and Nelson, 2004).The first part of the study involved trapping a spotted-tailed quoll and fitting the individual with a combined global positioning system / ultra high frequency (GPS/UHF) radio-transmitter collar (Telemetry Solution – Quantum 4000E). The benefit of the GPS/UHF collar is that it records locations (or fixes) at intervals programmed by the user. The UHF component allows the researcher to locate the individual at a frequent interval, and the Quantum 4000E also has a remote download function, enabling the GPS data stored in the collar to be wirelessly transmitted between the collar and researcher. The benefit of this new technology is that the animal does not need to be repeatedly captured to retrieve the GPS data.Daytime searches are also undertaken using the UHF receiver to locate the individual and locations of daytime denning and latrine sites. The location of each den site is recorded using a hand-held GPS. Data downloaded from the GPS collar is then imported and mapped using computer software program ARCGIS (geographic information system), to overlay the data points onto aerial photography.Results demonstrate that threatened species will utilise rehabilitation areas post mining. The data presented will be used to develop a greater understanding of threatened species ecology in and around rehabilitated areas, which will assist in the planning and design of native forest rehabilitation areas.CITATION:York, P, 2014. This paper discusses the dewatering strategy adopted and the considerations and procedures required to incorporate a dewaterinq scheme into the Mt Whaleback mining operation. It concludes that in pit pre-dewaterinq has successfully allowed mining to progress below the standing water level with the minimum of disruption or radical change to the mining method. It is recognised however, that dewatering is not a static activity and there is a requirement for ongoing investigations and development. Pre-dewatering commenced in October, 1984. Purpose designed pumping trailers have been employed to minimise the loss of pump availability resulting from the frequent. need to remove and reinstall pumps when close vicinity blasts occur. To July, 1986, some 0.5 Mm' of groundwater had been pumped from the unconfined orebody aquifer. Mining has progressed to some 20 m below the standing water level without. any undue water associated problems. Ultimately, it is ,cheduled to extend some 300 in below the original water level in the West Pit. With the development of an increasing area of the mine below the standing water level, the influence of seasonal high intensity rainfall events, which had previously caused little concern, now need to be addressed. The Mt. Wright Underground Mine is located near the town of Ravenswood in North Queensland and is operated by Carpentaria Gold – a wholly owned subsidiary of Resolute Mining Limited. The establishment of the world’s first Sub Level Shrinkage (SLS) mine from a tradition Sub Level Open Stoping operation has proven to be a geotechnical challenge which has required tailored solutions to overcome unique issues. This paper will be broken into two distinct sections that will outline: a brief overview of the mining method and how the SLS method was chosen; and how the SLS is managed and key geotechnical learnings. The story of the world’s first SLS originated from the need of a bulk mining method to ensure the viability of Mt. Wright into the future. Traditional bulk mining methods such as; Block or Sublevel Caving were originally ruled out due to the low natural ‘cavability’ of the orebody and the proximity of the orebody to existing major infrastructure (Decline, Ventilation Rises and Egresses). The first section of the paper will outline the key geotechnical information that helped decide the SLS method in addition to how continuous backfill influenced the design. The second section is intended to address issues that the geotechnical engineers encountered since the inception of the SLS. The feature topic of this section is mining induced stress. Like most bulk mining methods, Mt. Wright had success when the production front was running parallel to the stress (production front being ‘shadowed’ from the stress). This was until a design change, forced by a splitting ore body resulted in this shadowing effect becoming harder to achieve. As a result, rehabilitation and production hole re-drilling become a regular occurrence, which teamed with a strict set of access controls made the production cycle longer and harder to complete.
