This work was instituted to investigate the microscopic structure of brown coals by means of microtome sections cut from them. It was found to be essential to impregnate the coal with some material prior to cutting, because of its powdery and crumbly nature. Of a number of impregnating materials tried, e.g., glycerine gum, gelatine, by far the most satisfactory was paraffin wax. Samples of brown coals for section cutting must be moist. When obtained, they should be put immediately into air-tight tins, and, if they are not to be used for some time, it is desirable to keep them under water containing a small amount of formalin. If the sample is allowed to dry in air, it becomes too hard to be cut. It cannot be softened again even by prolonged soaking in water.PREPARATION OF COALSmall rectangular, blocks were cut from the sample with a chisel and a strong scalpel. The largest block prepared was 3·2 x 2·5 x 0·6 cm. The faces of the block from which sections were to be cut were approximately levelled before treatment. The block was then painted carefully on all sides with two coats of warm aqueous agar, approximately 2 %. This prevented crumbling and breakage of the block during treatment. When the agar was set, the block was placed in water, and all the air removed with a vacuum pump. The water was replaced first by alcohol, then by chloroform, by the usual step transference of a series of liquids, in each of which the block was placed for 24 hours: Ethanol %, 10, 20, 30, 50, 70, 85, 95, 100 (three changes); Ethanol-chloroform, 3: 1, 1: 1, 1 : 3, chloroform pure (three changes) '. Geochemical investigations carried out in the Woodcutters area, Rum Jungle district, NT., consisted of a programme of C-horizon soil geochemical sampling followed by rotary-percussion and diamond drilling.Comparison of detailed geochemical sampling with the original broadly-spaced sampling showed that the structures along which the orebodies occur are reflected very closely by the detailed sampling.A series of vertical rotary-percussion drill holes put down adjacent to a gossan revealed a broad layered dispersion of lead and zinc in the deep lateritic weathering profile, while primary dispersion haloes are only very narrow. The layering appears to be related to the weathering profile.

The occurrence of lollingite (FeAs2 ) in the Broken Hill lode is recorded by an analysis of lollingite published in the Annual Report of the Department of Mines, New South Wales, for the year 1934 (p. 69). The analysed specimen came from the North Broken Hill mine, and material from the same occurrence (Specimeh No. 1), as well as two specimens (Nos. 3 and 4) from the Zinc Corporation mine, have been forwarded· to us by Mr. M. Mawby of the Zinc Corporation Mine. This material has been supplemented by another specimen (No. 2) from the Zinc Corporation mine, passed over to us by Dr. I. Wark.The original analysis of lollingite is quoted in Table I, and shows that the Broken Hill lollingite contains appreciable amounts of cobalt and nickel, and, indicates that the iron is to a considerable extent replaced by cobalt and nickel, so that its formula should be written (FeCoNi) As2This is supported by a microscopical examination of a polished surface of the lollingite, in which no individual arsenides of cobalt and nickel can be detected.Coarse grained galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and pyrite are attached to our specimen of lollingite from the North mine, and are separated by a sharp junction from a mass of lollingite associated with some arsenopyrite and garnet. The massive lollingite can be distinguished from arsenopyrite in the hand specimen by a much brighter, silvery lustre, against which arsenopyrite appears a dull silver grey; but the passage from lollingite to arsenopyrite appears transitional.

The report by Baker (1958, p. 27) of krennerite in contact with gold in a specimen from the 2500 ft level, Phantom South lode, Great Boulder mine, Kalgoorlie, led the writer to look into this further, since Cabri (1965) reported that the assemblage krennerite-gold was unstable between 238° and 356° C, and possibly down to room temperature.Dr. G. Baker very generously provided the writer with two chips from the same rock specimen (No. 14 as labelled from the mine) in which the krennerite gold assemblage was reported to occur. These were examined by polished section and x-ray diffraction techniques and returned to the classified collection of the Mineragraphic Investigations Section of CSIRO.One specimen, showing visible gold, was examined optically with a binocular microscope and telluride material was twice removed from contact with the gold for x-ray diffraction. THOSE who dabble in mining are no exception to the general rule that persons who know a little of a subject are apt to think that they know all about it. Some colour may be lent to the belief that anyone may succeed in mining when we hear stories ofsuccessful diggers and others who have accidentally dropped on to something good through no foresight on their part; but we seldom hear the contra account of the far larger number who fail. Those who go more thoroughly into the subject, and take up mining as a profession, know very well that it is not one that can be carried out successfully by rule of thumb, but when they point this out to the public they are credited with trying to make it a closed profession; and outsiders are for ever trying to find out the "trade secrets," at the same time spurning the main one, which is hard study, experience, and the ability to apply their knowledge. The average mining man is not rich. When he amasses a fortune it is generally through speculation rather than professional work, thought no doubt his technical knowledge may have assisted...

The timber township of Powelltown, Victoria lies N.E. of Yarra Junction, 60 miles east of Melbourne and in the site of the mill of the Victorian Hardwood Company Proprietary Ltd.A lift gauge railway owned by the company connects Yarra Junction on the Warburton line, with the township through two or three smaller mill centres on the way.The company has been operating for some 12 years. In the divide, about four miles from Powelltown, between the Little Yarra and Latrobe rivers, cutting was continued with material being handled by winch and double incline haulage over the divide. A small bush locomotive dealt with the traffic between the divide and the cutting site.In order to reduce costs, which were heavy at the haulage, the company decided to make a continuous railway from Powelltown to the bush by means of a tunnel through the divide.Hand bore holes were put down on the proposed line of tunnel and showed that the divide at this point consisted of decomposed depth of about 100 ft. towards the eastern or Latrobe side - and that the undecomposed granite summit lay to the west of the surface summit.The bores also served to locate the underground water line, this was afterwards found to rise and fall with wet and weather.To avoid tunnelling in hard and heavy water, the grading of the was laid out with the summit of the hard granite the point in the line.

In this paper is given a general description of the Black Star copper orebody, its relation to the lead orebodies and the controlling factors in the mineralisation.Copper ore, in the form of chalcopyrite, was first noted at Mount Isa in 1930 during the surface drilling campaign to prove the downward continuation of the silver-Iead-zinc orebodies.Details of the occurrence are set out in table 1.Other sub-commercial widths were also disclosed and examination of these occurrences showed that commercial mineralisation could not be expected within 800 ft. of the surface. It was therefore decided that further exploration was not warranted until underground workings had advanced to this horizon.Detailed surface mapping showed two small outcrops of the host rock of the copper orebody. One occurrence, 50 ft. x 75 ft., was of quartz, with leaching suggesting former dolomite. Another outcrop, further north and west of silicified shale, with low grade oxidised copper, has recently been found. In the years prior to the outbreak of war in 1939 Australia's production of copper had declined from a peak of about 80,000 tons in 1911-1915 to approximately 25,000 tons in 1939. This production met the need of the slowly growing national requirement and gave an excess for export. However, with the intensification of the war effort in 1942 due to the imminence of a Japanese invasion of this country, or at least a blockade of the sea lanes, it became necessary to expand production of armaments, and consequently the demand for copper increased beyond the capacity of the industry. Importation of copper to Australia during the period 1940-1944 was 131,000 tons.When exploration of the Mount Isa orebody was first being carried out in 1928, No. ID diamond drill disclosed the presence of some copper ore lying outside the limits of the Black Star orebody2, but it was not until 1941-1942 that the development of No. 7 level in the Black Star orebody enabled the existence of a lode of copper ore of economic grade to be established. At the request of the Commonwealth Government of the day a programme of development for copper production was undertaken whilst lead smelting was continued as before the war.A series of flotation tests on up to 1,500 tons of ore at a time, was undertaken and the concentrate so obtained was stockpiled. These tests were conducted, using one section of the lead mill, and demonstrated that a concentrate grade of 22-23% Cu with a recovery of 80-85% might be expected.These recovery figures were afterwards much improved, and 93-95%was obtained before the close of smelting in 1946.

William Frederick McBryde Broun, a graduate of the Royal School of Mines, was employed on the staff of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company for some years prior to 1912, and will perhaps be remembered by some of those who attended the Mount Morgan meeting of the Institute in 1910, as an Associate Member present on that occasion. He severed his connection with the Mount Morgan Company in 1912, and was returning to England via the East Indies, when he contracted typhoid atSingapore and died at Colombo.Years later some old papers were being turned out in the office where he had worked, when a set of M.S. notes in his unmistakeable handwriting came to light. On examination these appeared to be the rough draft of a paper he must have beenpreparing for the local branch of the Institute, which he had not been able to complete. The notes were very rough. Apparently it was the author's intention to fill in numerous gaps with extracts from sundry published articles on Cornish mining; theextracts were missing and only the written portions linking them together were there. They give a sketch of Cornish mining practice which those who wish may supplement (as the author would have done) from Le Neve Foster and other well-knownsources. There has been little change in the lead smelting practice at Mount Isa since 1939 when the metallurgy and general practice were outline by Raney and Blott.The purpose of this paper is to descriqe some of the operational details that have influenced the overall production. The slag fall hns been increased by the lowering of the lead content of the concentrate. Further, as it is the practice to include iron on the furnace charge and carry a higher lime content in the slag, both factors have produced notable results in furnace operations.All blast furnace gases are filtered in a baghouse and this unit is. being further extended to take all smelter gases, thus eliminating the existing Cottrell plant handling Dwight-Lloyd gases.The lead smelter was closed down from April 1943, to May 1946, during which time blister copper was produced.The report is subdivided as follows:-1. A summary of the more important work by previous workers is followed by brief descriptions of the rock formations and regional structure. LAKE MARGARET is situate high up on the West Coast Range of Tasmania, and lies in a roughly triangular valley formed by the ridge of Mount Sedgwick on the south, the ridge formed by Mounts Geikie and Tyndal on the west, amid a ridge connecting Mounts Geikie and Sedgwick on the east. Any description of this hydroelectric installation, however brief, naturally divides itself into the following sections:1. STORAGE BASIN, &c. 2. DAM. 3. PIPE LINES. 4. POWER STATION. 5. TRANSMISSION LINES. 6. SUBSTATION 7. VARIOUS WORKS utilizing the power.The Storage Basin used is the natural lake itself, which has a maximum length of 110 chains, a maximum width of 40 chains, and a mean arelj. of 300 acres. The water-level of the lake, which has been maintained by a natural dam, is 2143 ft. above sea-level. The approximate catchment area at present appropriated is 7 sq. miles, and the rainfall, on the average, about 144 in. per annum. It is possible to increase this catchment area by suitable races, &c. Dam.-The dam constructed is of very small dimensions, and is not a storage dam in the usual sense of the term. The natural storage ot-the lake itself was used by means of a channel cut through the natural dam and thence to the mouth of the lake, the lake level being thus temporarily lowered while the outlet pipes, screens, &c., were placed in position, and the channel was then closed again with a concrete wall in which the pipes and screens are set. In order to maintain an accurate survey underground, it is first necessary to connect all shafts used for the transferring of the survey to the levels below by a precise surface survey.This has been achieved at Mount Isa by a careful triangulation survey with stations adjacent to those shafts most suitably located for transferring the survey below.The precedure used is described herein.The Weisbach triangle commonly used is obtained by reading to swingirig wires, the theodolite being placed in line with them as nearly as is possible. The surveyor at the surface places the wires in the shaft as far apart as the size of the shaft will permit, with sufficient space between the wires and walls to ensure their swinging freely. The far wire is fixed in position, while the near one is movable by means of fine adjusting screws to facilitate its being brought into line with the fixed wire and the theodolite. When this is done the surveyor at the lower level is advised by pre-arranged signals and the survey can then commence.The surface portion of the survey is simple; all that is necessary being to read the angle from the backsight to the wires, measure their distance from the theodolite, and keep a check on them throughout the survey to make sure that no movement takes place.The lower portion of the survey is more difficult, the surveyor first qf all having to place his theodolite as nearly as possible in line with the wires.

This paper deals briefly with three of the more controversial aspects of the geology of the Mount Isa ore deposits namely the geologic structures, the method of ore deposition and the origin of the ore.In the section on geologic structures, an outline is first given of the purely tectonic deformation advocated by the early authors. The current interpretation, which differs in the proposed order of events and causal forces, is then discussed. Other concepts, which attribute all or part of the deformation to sedimentary features or preconsolidation movement, are outlined ilnd commented on.The remaining two sections deal mainly with the better known lead-zinc orebodies. In the first of these a brief description and criticism is given of the early interpretation which was based on the deposition of successive waves of mineralisation which replacedindividual beds in the shales. The current ideas, which visualise emplacement of the ore between the beds rather than replacement of them, is then discussed. The final section develops the case for a sedimentary origin of the lead-zinc ores and broadly outlines the author's ideas concerning the evolution of the Mount Isa ore deposits.INTRODUCTIONAny consideration of the geology of Mount Isa must begin with the work of Blanchard and continue with that of Hall. Individually, or as co-authors, they published various papers on the geology of Mount Isa. Of these, the best known is their "Rock Deformation and Mineralisation at Mount Isa" (1941) which gave a comprehensive account of all aspects of Mount Isa geology.It is necessary to appreciate the limits set on geological knowledge of the mine and environs in 1941 by the extent of mine development and regional geologic studies. Underground, 7 level (897 ft.) was the lowest producing level. Mount Read is 'situated in the county of Montagu, on 'the west coast of Tasmania, about 20 miles inland from. Remine in an easterly direction, 15 miles northerly from Mount. Lyell, and 30 miles south-east from Mount Bischoff, and is one of the mountains forming the west coast range; it rises to a height of 3890 ft. above sea level.About eleven years ago the first mineral section was taken up on Mount Read by a Hobart company, known as the Mount Reid Silver Mining Company, consisting of 25,000 shares its holding consisted of one section of 80 acres, held under mineral lease. Prospecting was carried on for some months under great disadvantages, as all supplies had to be carried up the mount from Dundas, a distance of nine miles, on men's backs, until a pack track for horses was made.The track rises 2500 ft. in the first five miles, and then falls 200 ft. from that point to the mines, which are at an altitude of 3000 ft. above sea level, and at a point about two miles westward from the summit of the mountain, approximately midway between Mounts Read and Dundas.

Isa): I found many ideas to interest me in Haddon King's paper "Notes on Ore Occurrences in Highly Metamorphosed Precambrian Rocks" (Stillwell Anniversary Volume).At Mount Isa I have not been happy about some of the longstanding appreciations of the geological evidence as fresh data accumulated, and as more and more knowledge has been building up outside Mount Isa in recent years of sedimentary deposition of sulphides.Accordingly, I organized a small section of the Geological Department at Mount Isa at the beginning of 1958 under Senior Geologist, W. J. Murray to reappraise our geological record and investigate old interpretations and new ones that arise. The work is expected to take several years to complete, but it is hoped that sufficient will be done before then to permit the most plausible story on the ore genesis to be chosen. In the meantime, W. J. Murray has proposed, in a Company Report, that the.epigenetic features of the silver,lead-zinc deposits, which are essentially conformable with the shales, could have resulted from remobilized syngenetic deposits.Haddon King, on p. 159; has listed six assumptions that are required by a magmatic-hydrothermal theory of, origin for conformable deposits. This subject of paramount importance in many modern plants employed in the extraction of gold from ores by cyanidation, involves several considerations.With the old-type "slimes decantation" process, using several tanks of large dimension, installed at high capital cost, it was frequently possible to obtain good settlement over a protracted period, but the disability of indifferent response to subsequent filtration and washing of the residual pulp, after decantation of the supernatant pregnant solution, was often present.In modern cyanidation practice, the tendency is to reduce capital expenditure by continuous processing of the ore pulp in a plant of less volume, but capable of handling more tonnage through-put and yielding, coincidently, less residual dissolved gold in the final pulp residues.INHIBITORY FACTORS.These involve a study of the effect of the circuit water or solution employed in milling and treatment, the amount of "primary" slime occurring in the ore broken underground, the constitution of the "walls" underground, the inherent occurrence of colloidal slime in partially decomposed ore, and the presence of kaolinised and ferruginous clayey structures carrying payable infiltrations of gold values, to mention some of the troubles encountered in practice. In undertaking to write a few notes on practical mining in Bendigo, the great quartz mining centre of Victoria, which just now is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary of gold mining, satisfaction must be expressed which is, no doubt, shared by all mining men and inyestors, that Bendigo has not lagged behind other Australian mining districts in the evolution of mining from its crude state, subsequent to the discovery of gold in 185 to its present more perfect state; and though it may be said that it has not yet reached the high pinnacle of perfection towards which advanced science and change of conditions may yet lead it in the course of future progress, yet, what has already been done in this respect, the adoption of the most approved methods appliances and modern machinery, tending towards greater and still greater efficiency, facility, and economy in our mining industry, must be accepted as a guarantee that in tne future as well as in the past, progress in our means of developing our mining resources will ever remain our watchword, by means of which future difficulties will be overcome as well as they have been removed in the past.The adoption of this principal, combined with a study of rigid economy, has raised gold mining here, as well as in other places, from a state of speculation, and sometimes wild speculation, to the status of a solid, stable industry, the strong supportand backbone of the country in which it flourishes. Two of the principal factors which have been to a great extent instrumental in bringing about this satisfactory state, must be specially mentioned.
