Mining One (M1) is often challenged with the task of evaluating deposits considering open cut and/or underground (UG) mining methods. In many near surface deposits a combination of both methods results in the optimum economic means of exploitation. As common as it is to have open pit mines eventually develop into underground mines, theory associated with determining the optimum underground/open pit interface location continues to be subject to refinement. With recent developments in underground software packages, the generation of rudimentary underground mining stopes from basic economic inputs is not only fast, it provides a practical underground mining solution. The determination of the open pit/underground interface is not new to Gemcom's Whittle 4X (Whittle). However, its solution has only ever claimed to be indicative, mainly due the rudimentary nature of how Whittle represents any potential underground mining. The efficient generation of the aforementioned underground mining solution has provided mining engineers with a unique opportunity. Underground mining can now be represented within the Whittle environment to allow the open pit/underground mining scenario to be modelled with increased accuracy. Providing Whittle with the ability to now consider mineable underground stopes combined with the consideration of time value of money (discounting), has delivered a solution with higher credibility than ever before.This paper will elaborate on the potential value gains associated with improved accuracies in the modelling of any potential underground mining in the Whittle environment. Furthermore, it will explain the importance of incorporating time value of money in the optimisation process to provide a consistent solution through to pit selection and final analysis.

Long hole drilling underground has come a long way since 'down the hole' surface drills were first taken underground. The underground miners have progressively developed the use of long hole stope drilling from the 'quarry blast' to a precise and selective removal of ore while leaving the remaining structure as undamaged as possible. To reach this position has involved the development of equipment and explosives to give the desired results. This paper reviews some aspects of long hole stope production drilling.

Optimisation and sensitivity analysis of final pit limits is now an accepted procedure for open pit planning studies. Tools to assist the design engineer in an underground metalliferous mine to make optimal choices for the selection of major development, stope geometry and cut-off grade analysis have not been available. The engineer has had to rely on experience and a limited analysis of design alternatives. A new tool called the `floating stope' has been developed to define the optimal (boundary) limit for material that can be economically extracted by underground stoping methods. The method is analogous to the `floating cone' method of open pit optimisation. The geology and mineralisation are modelled as a regular or subcell block model. Included in the model are structural and geotechnical features, and any previously mined out areas. Inputs to the procedure include the minimum stope dimensions, cut-off grade, stope head grade, and the way in which dilution is to be calculated. The optimisation procedure can be directed to maximise ore tonnes, grade, contained metal or the economic (dollar) value of material mined. The procedure can be applied at each stage of mine evaluation and design to assist with preliminary resource appraisal, selection of stoping methods, and detailed mine design. As with open pit optimisation procedures, manual intervention by an experienced engineer is required to produce practical and detailed designs. This practical design should follow the optimised design as closely as possible. The paper outlines the algorithms used in the definition of the stope envelope, and describes the analysis and results of several case studies where the optimisation procedure has been applied.

Mill filling is an important operational parameter in a SAG mill circuit and by its control and optimisation it can produce significant improvements in production capacity and energy efficiency. However, it is industry practice to report mill load as the total output given by load cells, or kPa for systems based on lubrication bearing back pressure, rather than the actual percent total mill filling.Ball trajectory is another critical parameter as overthrow can result in accelerated liner wear and possibly liner failure whilst underthrow can result in reduced grinding action. The assessment of ball trajectory cannot be done in isolation as the toe of the charge needs to be determined to make any meaningful assessment. Thus both total percent mill filling and mill trajectory are critical parameters; however neither is reported or available to metallurgy or processing teams in real time or a regular basis.In this study the performance of a fixed speed SAG mill was assessed and optimised by employing mill trajectory models and using the JKMRC power model to calculate percent total mill filling. Power Curves, which correlate ball filling, mill filling and mill power, were also developed. The characterisation of rock fracture networks is an important component of rock engineering applications involving stability assessment or fluid flow analysis. However, the derivation of a reliable rock fracture model remains a very challenging problem in practice. This paper describes a Bayesian framework, in the form of Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation, for the construction of such a model. Model conditioning using different data sources is discussed including seismic events recorded during hydraulic fracture stimulation, rock face fracture mapping data and downhole geophysical survey data. The freeware FracSim3D is used for the simulations.

Optimisation of a real-time at-line monitoring system for control of industrial granule coating quality is presented. The system is based on a fluorescence imaging system, because fluorescence originates in the interiors of enzyme granules but is significantly quenched by a polymer coating (which is needed due to environmental precautions). We have developed an image analytical system for direct prediction of coating quality, which is based on application of the Angle Measure Technique (AMT) for image complexity characterisation; AMT is briefly described. The first part of the presentation addresses pixel sampling strategies within a digital industrial image, inherent in application of AMT, in which the unfolded image is regarded as a one-dimensional object in analogy with 1D process sampling in Theory of Sampling (TOS). The effects of random, stratified and systematic pixel selections in the unfolded image are evaluated. Also factors such as the fraction of image pixels and the effects of specific unfolding strategies (there are three principal strategies, termed æchopÆ, æsnakeÆ and æspiralÆ respectively) are investigated. It turns out that unsuspected artifacts are sometimes produced, related to the specifics of the unfolding procedure, which interferes with a straightforward 1D TOS process sampling analogy. These artifacts have a wider interest û among others, for 2D sampling û and therefore receive special attention in this presentation. The optimal pixel selection strategy for the AMT algorithm is found to be systematic or stratified sampling (not surprising according to TOS) of 500+ initiating points, but need to be unfolded in the novel spiral- or snake-wise fashions in order to effectively counteract these artifacts. This also has a general impact on various suggested standard schemes for 2D grid-sampling, among others, from the geoscience realms. The second part of the presentation is directed towards optimal image analytical sampling of a continuous series of fluorescent images (imaging of conveyor belts of æinfinite lengthÆ), ie optimisation of process image sampling. The minimum number of images needed to uphold a sufficiently good on-line estimate of the quality control (QC) parameter in question is found to correspond to the relatively high sampling rate of 15 - 20 per cent, which can be shown to be related to an intrinsic very high measurement error level (25 per cent) of a mandated analytical reference method.

The Asanko Gold Mine in Ghana started processing ore from the Nkran pit in January 2016 at a production nameplate of 3 Mt/a. The flowsheet is a conventional SAG, ball mill and pebble crusher (SABC) with gravity-gold and carbon-in-leach (CIL) recovery. The nameplate production was comfortably achieved within 3 months, so much so, that it was clear the SABC circuit was capable of processing more than the downstream section of the plant. Consequently, a program of de-bottlenecking was initiated to rectify volumetric capacity constraints. This program was later referred to as ‘Project 5 Million’ (t/a) or P5M. Having completed the de-bottlenecking exercise, it became evident that the SABC circuit could not reach 5 Mt/a solely on hard rock from Nkran. The new challenge was therefore to increase the capacity of the milling circuit through a focused comminution initiative that would address the following: geometallurgical treatment plan; upfront fragmentation requirements; installation of feed and mill monitoring equipment; and integration of a knowledge-based control strategy. This paper takes the reader through the various measures implemented to increase the milling rates and to create a stable/ sustainable control philosophy. Research programs have established the correlation between the basic mill operating parameters such as: size of crushing products, number of mill rotation, ore flow and quantity of ore in the mill, diameter of grinding media, and specific consumption of grinding media. Also, the mill efficiency has been determined in dependence of adsorption. Mathematical dependences and equations are presented in this paper.

It has long been known that drilling and blasting operations have a direct influence over productivity and costs of subsequent operations. If mine management is to effectively optimise blasting operations, good information is required on the operating costs of each of the affected operations, together with knowledge of how they are influenced by blasting. In practice it is not possible to do enough repeats of a full scale production blasting experiment to make a statistically significant analysis of the results. By monitoring each blast and subsequent operations in as much detail as possible, enough data will be available to effectively measure the effect of blasting on costs. This gives management an insight into the blast performance and is the first step towards optimisation. An Integrated Blast-related Cost Reporting System has been developed at the Rossing Mine Open Pit, which calculates the total mining cost for each blast. In assessing the total mining cost for each blast, use was made of an.integrated planning and management information system to collect relevant production variables, current operating costs and survey data. An automatic image analysis system was employed to measure the fragmentation of the blasted material in the back of haul trucks. A shovel monitoring system is also under development for use in assessing the muckpile diggability and, in conjunction with an appraisal of shovel component reliability, to estimate the maintenance cost under various digging conditions.

The use of cemented rock fill (CRF) for support of open stope walls has increased in the Australian underground mines operations over the last five years due in part to its low capital cost. In open stoping the exposed CRF masses require adequate strength and stiffness, in order to resist the forces and to limit the displacement associated with movements in the rock mass surrounding the excavations. The CRF material preparation often involves the use of large particles, either from crushed rock or from development mining waste sometimes up to 1 m in diameter. However, the use of waste rock, which has a poorly graded particle size distribution may not achieve the required minimum target strength due to segregation and large air voids within the fill mass. This paper describes the optimisation of CRF strength by either crushing the waste rock or the addition of sand to the mix. Both methods increase the level of fines in the mix design. Cylindrical samples having 400 mm diameter and 800 mm heights were prepared for uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) testing. The UCS test was determined using the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) large-scale static test frame. The laboratory results were compared with a database of large-scale CRF strength mixed without sand from a number of mine sites around Australia. The comparison shows a significant strength development in the CRF mixing with addition of sand for a given cement percentage. Due to the higher strengths achieved by the addition of sand and the crushing of the waste material these CRF types require less cement to achieve the same strength. Refractory ores need to be pretreated prior to cyanide leaching for acceptable gold recovery. Pressure oxidation is one method of rendering the ores more suitable for cyanidation. The focus of this work is optimisation of autoclave configuration for pressure oxidation. An autoclave for the pressure oxidation of a feed containing pyrite and arsenopyrite was modelled, using the population balance framework. The autoclave model takes into account feed particle size, reaction kinetics and retention time. Mass balance calculations were incorporated into Cycad Process« software. This allowed for the investigation of different circuit configurations. The base case model consists of a single autoclave. The feed was then doubled and additional autoclaves were added to provide the same residence time as the base case. Four different configurations for the additional equipment were simulated. These were parallel, series, series with inter-stage thickening and parallel-series circuits. The options are compared in terms of extraction and productivity. The parallel circuit behaves similarly to the base case. The series and series-parallel circuits have higher recoveries and productivities than the base case. The series circuit with inter-stage thickening provides the highest extraction and productivity. This is because the thickening reduces the slurry volume and increases the residence time of the solids in the downstream autoclave.CITATION:Saloojee, F and Crundwell, F K, 2013. The technology of coal preparation, while based on similar processes to those in common useage in the 1950s, has improved significantly over the past 15 years primarily due to advances in process control. This technology at least offers the potential for most coal preparation unit operations to be optimised to a considerable degree. However, to maximise the overall yield of an operation from pit to port, factors often outside of the control of the preparation plant operator have a dominant effect. Specific factors include an in depth knowledge of the feed characteristics of the various sources of coal, the detailed mine scheduling to provide an appropriate blend to the plant, and the interim handling and stockpiling processes between the mine face and the customer.This paper summarises the criteria for optimising the yield for a variety of mining, processing and stockpiling options, based on the principle of operating at constant incremental ash. Pragmatic operating assumptions such as extension of the principle to operating at a constant density for gravity operations will be discussed. A means of optimising the compromise between maintaining specification product ash to the customer and maximising yield by always washing at constant incremental ash, without the benefit of a homogenised feed, will also be Presented.

"Several mine scheduling tools exist for use in optimising and scheduling the reserve according to in situ value. These tools generally value the ore on a per block basis according to regressed recovery models based on ore grade and type. It is then the task of the plant metallurgist to ensure that these ore blocks are fed to the plant in a manner that satisfies the prevailing plant constraints. This task is often completed in complex Excel® spreadsheets that are modified over time with factors applied to account for plant modifications or limitations.It is the authors’ experience that this approach is difficult to audit and replicate in a consistent manner. Furthermore, operational decisions, such as primary grind size or autoclave oxidation are made on the metallurgist or managements’ perceived optimum value and does not necessarily represent a cash flow based optimum.Many processing plants contain multiple internal constraints. As ore feed grades and properties change over the life-of-mine (LOM), processing-bottlenecks shift from one unit process to another and different operating strategies need to be adopted to maximise cash generation from the process.This paper presents a unified optimisation approach to scheduling ore based on a circuit mass balance to describe the process plant with individual models for each significant unit operation. The approach allows for optimisation over multiple input variables and the inclusion of linear and non-linear constraints.This optimisation process has been applied to different complex gold operations. The end result is an automated scheduler that selects the optimum blend of ores as well as plant operating conditions that satisfy all internal plant and shutdown constraints while maximising the objective of choice (metal production or cash flow). The models are also valuable for evaluating expansion or debottlenecking opportunities of individual processing units. Fine-grained coal tailings slurry undergoes only limited settling and self-weight consolidation, and tends to remain slurry-like and unsuitable for conventional laboratory consolidation testing. In addition, constant rate of loading consolidation testing is more representative of the continuous disposal of tailings slurry into a tailings storage facility (TSF) than conventional step loading. The laboratory consolidation testing of coal tailings slurry under a constant rate of loading has been carried out in a purpose-built, large-scale, slurry consolidometer, instrumented with load cells and pore water pressure (PWP) transducers. In the slurry consolidometer, the rate of loading may be varied to represent the actual rate of rise of the tailings in the TSF. A slow rate of loading increases the test duration, while too fast a rate of loading may build up very high excess PWP, without achieving significant consolidation. For the particular fine-grained coal tailings slurry tested, the rate of loading in the slurry consolidometer is varied to access its effect on the development and dissipation of excess PWP. Since the commissioning of the BHAS Copper Plant in 1984 the copper electrowinning operations have not fully met expectations. During 1988, a laboratory scale electrowinning unit was constructed to enable an investigation of the effects of process parameters on copper cathode deposition and quality. The process parameters investigated were copper concentration, acid concentration, current density, electrolyte temperature, electrolyte flow, electrolyte impurities and electrolyte additives. The findings of this research program indicate that there is an optimum cathode deposition morphology which results in good quality copper deposits which have improved stripping characteristics. All of the process variables investigated influenced the copper deposition and therefore it was necessary to delineate a suitable operating envelope for the copper electrowinning. As a result new standard operating parameters in electrowinning have been implemented which has enabled the production of higher quality copper cathodes with improved stripping characteristics.

The surface treatment works in the Mount Isa Mines Limited copper stream consist of a concentrator and smelter with annual capacities of 5.6 million tonnes of ore and production of 155 000 tonnes of anode copper respectively. Both plants have been sites for process optimisation in recent years, the emphasis being to achieve productivity gains in each particular plant. The continued low real world prices for copper resulted in an in-depth review of the entire copper process stream. This indicated the need for developments within both the concentrator and smelter, and changes to operating strategy to ensure that the entire treatment stream could be optimised. The paper reviews these changes.

The practical application of LaneÆs theory on optimum cut-off grade policy has to date proved difficult for selective stoping in large-scale underground mining. The key to determining an optimum cut-off grade is the ability to rapidly perform complex mine layout designs combined with rapid output of multiple potential schedules. This paper describes aspects of the detailed investigation into estimating a practical static cut-off grade for the two main orebodies in Mount Isa MineÆs Enterprise Mine. Rule based automated scheduling software was used to evaluate thirteen different stoping layouts (including design infrastructure and capital development) of the Enterprise MineÆs two main orebodies, with over 200 schedules generated. The investigation illustrates the application of commercially available software to solve the problems of generating multiple cut-off grade stope designs and achieving the otherwise insurmountable task of rapidly generating and valuing multiple scenarios for each stoping layout. Each scenario was evaluated using modelled net cash flows of the mining, concentrating and smelting operations of the company and calculating NPV. The cut-off grade for each orebody was selected based on the cut-off grade that achieved maximum NPV û with an appropriate production rate. Underground mine scheduling is a complex task involving the adherence to a number of simple scheduling rules and the balancing of several competing drivers. The study also found that: while each scheduling rule itself is simple, the compounding complexities of their interaction preclude manual scheduling from being a realistic option. there is a maximum sustainable rate of production possible for any given stoping layout, and that the actual maximum production rate is also a function of the required number of years of sustainable production. the optimal cut-off grade was different for each orebody û a recognition of the impact of the different characteristics of each orebody.

The theory of declining optimimum cut-off grades is more than 25 years old, but for a number of reasons it is still not widely used in industry. A lack of faith in the veracity of estimated grades is not in itself a reason to abandon any attempt to optimise cut-off grades. The use of declining cut-off grades has been thought to cause high-grading, but in fact this is only true if an artificially high discount rate is used in the calculations. Perfect application of an optimum cut-off grade should ensure that only ore generating more than a minimum net return is mined, and that as much as possible of the ore capable of generating that return is mined. Therefore differing mining costs in different parts of some underground mines necessitate local modifications to cut-off grade. Optimisation of cut-off grade is of necessity an iterative process. Integration of that process into a feasibility study need not be excessively time-consuming. A number of approximations can be made to speed the optimisation (any attempt to achieve a high level of accuracy is probably doomed to failure by a lack of precise cost and price projections). A procedure is outlined for optimising cut-off grade during planning of a typical underground mine.

Ban Houayxai is a gold-silver mine operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited in Laos since 2012. The first two years of operation processed predominately soft oxidised ore but subsequent years were expected to process more fresh hard ore. Fragmentation of the fresh primary ores was also expected to be much coarser than for the soft oxide ores. This coarser and harder ore is expected to significantly reduce mill throughput and mining productivity. The Ban Houayxai management realised the potential downside risk when processing fresh harder ores and implemented a blast optimisation project to deliver finer fresh ore to the mill without unduly increasing blast induced dilution and damage.JKTech and the Ban Houayxai drill and blast team began a joint blast optimisation project in April 2013 to achieve finer fragmentation from fresh ores. This was achieved by modifying the bench geometry, blast patterns and applying exceptionally high levels of quality control during implementation. Blast induced ore loss and dilution was controlled by adjusting the ore blocks for blast movement. Finer fragmentation from these modified designs improved mill throughput for the hard fresh ore by 46 per cent above design on average. The Girilambone Copper Mine is located in central New South Wales and has been operational since May 1993. Girilambone is operated by the Girilambone Copper Company (GCC) which is a joint venture between Straits Resources (60 per cent) and Nord Resources (40 per cent). The mine complex consists of an open cut pit, ore crushing and stacking, heap leaching, solvent extraction (SX) and electrowinning (EW) allowing for the recovery of 14 600 tpa of LME grade A cathode copper. The leaching and SX-EW plant have been described previously by Rear, Taylor and Busby (1994) and Miller (1994).
