The DOZ underground mine at PT Freeport Indonesia is a copper and gold mine in Indonesia with current ore production of 42 000 tpd. Because of the mine expansion into the West DOZ more ventilation raises are needed to create a safe and healthy work place. All ventilation raises that connect the extraction levels to the underlying gallery exhaust drifts at DOZ are now developed using drop raise techniques. This paper describes the improvements undertaken to increase blasting efficiency, to decrease cost and reduce safety risks. This was achieved by using deck loading and presplitting, changing of stemming materials and prevention of excessive raise collar cratering (blow up).

In resource definition and mine development, major capital expenditures are committed on the basis of sparse information and even in production surprises such as bad ground are not uncommon. Drill holes constitute the principal source of information about the orebody and its environment and optimisation of drilling implies maximising the yield of useful information per dollar expended. Geophysical borehole logging provides new flexibility for optimising the drilling budget. Economic benefits can flow from geophysical logging at all stages of the mining cycle. The most commonly cited benefit is substitution of diamond delineation drilling with cheaper percussion or reverse circulation drilling in cases where geophysical logs can substitute for core. This approach can deliver an attractive direct saving in drilling costs (and time) if drill meterage is unchanged, or a potentially greater indirect benefit from better ore control if more holes are drilled within the original drilling budget. More ore contact intercepts per dollar can translate into lower dilution and enhanced ore recovery, thereby increasing revenue as well as reducing mining costs. Substitution of diamond drilling with percussion drilling is not always feasible. However, geophysical logging of diamond holes is often highly advantageous in its own right, both for geotechnical characterisation as well as ore delineation. Operational advantages of logging include data objectivity, speed of interpretation and reduced core handling and analysis costs. Geophysical logging assists mining engineers by providing a continuous measure of in situ rock strength, even over intervals with poor core recovery. The additional expense of geophysical logging in blast holes can be justified in terms of more accurate ore boundary delineation and rock strength evaluation. Precise ore boundary delineation permits refinement of charge placement, to minimise dilution and maximise recovery. Detailed knowledge of rock strength can enable optimisation of blast design. Rock strength can be evaluated in real-time via analysis of drill performance data recorded with measurement-while-drilling (MWD) technology. To successfully apply geophysical logging in mines, its technical, operational and economic viability must all be established. This entails verification of the existence of appropriate physical property contrasts, investigation of the best way to integrate the geophysical results with the mining method and an objective assessment of the value of the resulting mine performance benefit. Geophysical logging is already well established in many mining operations. The greatest impediments to its wider utilisation at mines are: lack of appreciation of geophysics by most mine geologists, engineers and managers; limited interpretational aids; and the necessity to re-enter completed drill holes. In this paper we endeavour to address these issues by informing mine geologists about potential applications of geophysics, by illustrating automated interpretation of geophysical logs and by highlighting the importance of emerging MWD and logging- while-drilling (LWD) technology.

In mining industries, materials handling costs represent a significant component of the operational cost. A variety of methods have been applied in surface mine equipment selection in order to select the suitable loading system with the lowest loading operation cost. These are queuing theory, bunching theory, linear programming and genetic algorithm. Among them, genetic algorithm is a simple method and applied for preliminary selection of the loading system. In this study, gathering information from anomaly No 2 of Gol-e-Gohar iron mine of Iran, loading system (number and its capacity) has been optimised by genetic algorithm. The study results showed that two shovels 8.25 m3 are required for the removal of 60 million tonnes of overburden. After removal overburden, these two shovels contribute to the extraction of 42 million tonnes of ore with a stripping ratio of 1:1.

Consolidated Rutile Limited (CRL) was one of the best performing mining stocks of the turbulent 1980s, having a very high payout of franked dividends. In contrast to some other mining groups, it was not highly involved in the speculative lead-up to the 1987 sharemarket crash. Its base was firmly laid through a succession of decisions that were taken in the period 1982-1985. These decisions and the rationale behind them are outlined in this paper. CRL began the 1980s in a highly favourable position. It had successfully pioneered the transition to high-throughput mining of the high dunes on North Stradbroke Island (NSI), commissioning its 2100 tph cutter suction dredge at the Bayside reserves in 1978 at the time of rising prices, such that it was able to pay off its modest bank loan within 18 months. The June 1980 results showed a record after-tax profit of $5.6M, from total assets fo $26.5M and sales tonnages of rutile and zircon of around 50,000 tonnes each.

A mine waste dump progression plan can provide a clear outlook of the mining operation. To produce such an output requires detailed placement schedule of the mined material, including the volume (or tonnage) and the allocated dumping location. However, current practise mainly focuses on the ore production, over-simplifying the waste material scheduling. As a result, a rock dump is often treated as a single point in long-term planning, making it difficult to predict the waste dump progression pattern over the life-of-mine. Without such a guidance, it is almost impossible to carry out progressive rehabilitation on the waste rock dumps. The lack of dumping schedule could cause delay in development construction, ie tailing storage facility and run-of-mine pad. Other downstream effect due to the over-simplification is inaccurate estimation of required truck hours, which could have huge financial impact on the operation.In this paper, mixed integer programming (MIP) models of different objective functions, ie maximise truck productivity by minimising the overall haulage distance, minimise required truck deviation between adjacent years, and a hybrid between the two objectives, are utilised to generate the long-term optimum rock placement schedules under the criteria of satisfying site specific conditions. All three MIP models are implemented in a large scale open pit mine. The numerical solutions from the models forms three different rock placement schedules, based on which, the yearly truck requirements are easily calculated and compared. The graphical results show the three corresponding waste dump progression patterns over the life-of-mine, providing the optimised long-term forecast of the operation.CITATION:Li, Y, Topal, E and Ramazan, S, 2014. The Yara Siilinjärvi plant is located in the central part of Finland. Siilinjärvi is Western Europe's only apatite mine and annually it produces 1 Mt of apatite concentrate, which creates approximately 10 Mt of tailings.At the beginning of 2017, tailings handling in Yara Siilinjärvi was brought to a new era, by replacing the conventional tailings storage facility with a new tailings treatment plant. The new high-density tailings disposal system with two paste thickeners increased the percentage of solids in the slurry from 45–48 per cent to 66-68 per cent, making it possible to deposit as a paste. This extended the life-span of the current tailings storage facility by 15 years; from 2020 to 2035.This paper presents the storyline of the Yara Paste Plant Project. The project began with laboratory testing and then progressed to pilot-scale thickening and beaching trials. After some successful pilot trials, the final process design was implemented. Process instrumentation and automation played a key role in the project, as the aim of the Yara Project was to make the plant operable remotely from the main plant. An advanced control system is needed to maintain process stability and the desired operation point in various operational circumstances.This paper discusses the results from the Yara site since the new tailings treatment plant commenced. Some of the main points are that the operation has been running consistently with an underflow solids content of 66-68 per cent, with average beach slope angles of 3.5 degrees in the tailings disposal area. This control system additionally facilitates minimum use of flocculant, which delivers significant savings to operating costs. Robust thickener operation also leads to the trouble-free high-density pumping and high availability of the Paste Plant. During the first year of operation, the plant’s availability has been very good, over 97 per cent.Currently, the plant still has its own staff working there during the daytime, but the Paste Plant is now already operated remotely during the night shifts. Many products and technologies have been developed from outcomes of research projects carried out by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC). When these products and technologies are applied to the design and optimisation of blasting, comminution and separation, improvements in profitability can be realised. In 1970 Alban Lynch promoted two practical ideas to improve plant operations: Ore and equipment properties can be separated allowing experience with one type of ore or equipment to be transferred to other types of ore and equipment. If this experience was encapsulated in a mathematical model, then these properties could be combined and used to simulate (ie to design and to optimise) complete mineral processing circuits. Many problems associated with scale-up from laboratory to industrial equipment could be eliminated by experimental work on full-scale equipment in the plant. Many JKMRC research projects have focussed on the development of models of unit operations in mineral processing and their application to process simulation. Models of comminution and classification developed at the JKMRC have been used since the early-1980s. Ore characterisation techniques developed to support these models are licensed world wide through JKTech. The application of comminution modelling techniques to blasting, which optimises the process feed size distribution is used in Mine-to-Mill? projects. The advances in the understanding and modelling of froth flotation over recent years have provided the opportunity for integrated ore characterisation and process optimisation from resource to product. JKMRC project outcomes often provide proven opportunities for the mineral industry to improve performance and productivity. JKTech was established in 1986 to commercialise and market the most promising outcomes and thus ensure their continuing availability to the mineral industry. These include: commercial software (JKSimMet, JKSimBlast and JKMetAccount); monographs (Comminution and Blasting); technologies (Mine-to-Mill? and flotation optimisation); and hardware products (JKFrothCam, JKJetLift? and the Mineral Liberation Analyser). This paper summarises these technologies and their benefits.

The Bentley underground mine, which is located 60km north of Leonora, Western Australia, is owned and operated by Round Oak Minerals Pty Limited. A high-grade Zn-Cu Volcanogenic Massive Sulphide (VMS) orebody, Bentley was discovered in 2008 with production commencing in 2012. Long-hole open stoping is employed to mine the steeply dipping ore body, and in recent years the Avoca method has been adopted. This requires all development in a particular area of the mine to be completed prior to stoping commencing in a bottom up sequence. Voids are commonly backfilled with loose Run-of-Mine (ROM) waste loose rockfill (LRF); or alternatively cemented rockfill (CRF) can be used. Stopes in the 3860 AOS and 3900 AOS panels were located below previously extracted Avoca zones, with LRF situated immediately above them. These high-grade stopes were originally designed with rib and sill pillars to maintain control of the existing backfill during extraction. Due to changing factors over time, including mining economics, alternative options to achieve full extraction of the stopes were reviewed, including: • Mining small successive full height stopes which would involve drawing a blanket of LRF down with the extracted ore (stoping under waste); • Stabilisation of the existing LRF above the stopes and implementing a primary/secondary stoping sequence, with the primary stopes backfilled using a cement fill. An assessment of these options was undertaken which determined that the second full extraction method was the most beneficial to the operation, and could be achieved using a cement grout (Minova’s FB200 grout) to stabilise the LRF in conjunction with implementing a sequence where the primary stopes would be backfilled with cemented aggregate fill (CAF). Footwall drives were developed adjacent to the rockfilled stopes, allowing for the installation of horizontal grouting conduits, as well as providing access to the top of the planned 3860 and 3900 level stopes for the placement of CAF. An interval at the base of the previously rockfilled stopes was grouted at multiple horizons to achieve the required thickness, with a comprehensive quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) process undertaken. Primary stopes were CAF backfilled via an arrangement of downhole winzes, linking the top of primary stopes to cross-cuts developed off the associated footwall drives. CAF was delivered underground through an open reticulation network that was extended to the specific levels. Overall the successful implementation of the revised mining method effectively increased ore recovery while maintaining control of overbreak and dilution, providing significant financial upside. This was achieved while maintaining effective controls in light of the changes to the risk profile. Stabilisation of the existing rockfill has allowed the extraction of stopes to full height, including the originally designed sill pillars, representing an average 23% increase in ore tonnes on the initial design, with dilution from the stope crowns averaging less than 1%. The use of CAF in association with primary/secondary stoping, eliminating the need for rib pillars, has yielded an average 47% increase in ore tonnes compared to the base case mine design.

"The Telfer processing plant commissioned its pyrite regrind and flotation circuit in August 2012. The circuit was designed to regrind pyrite concentrate to a p80 of <30µm then float a gold and copper rich concentrate before tails from the flotation circuit fed the carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit downstream. Expected benefits were: improved CIL performance that would result from the finer grind and a reduction in cyanide soluble copper to the CIL circuit, as well as a small increase in overall flotation circuit recovery. While the benefits of a finer grind were soon realised, recovery in the post-regrind flotation circuit (named the ‘pyrite recleaner circuit’) was consistently and significantly lower than that expected based on laboratory test work. Selectivity in the pyrite recleaner circuit was virtually nil and copper reporting to the CIL circuit did not change as a result of the pyrite recleaner circuit operation.A pulp chemistry survey of the plant and comparison with the lab showed that the dissolved oxygen (DO) demand in the plant was much higher than that in the lab. Lab flotation tests conducted using nitrogen gas instead of air resulted in recoveries similar to those from the plant. It was identified that the freshly ground pyrite surfaces exiting the regrind mill were consuming oxygen in the slurry and there was insufficient oxygen available for collector adsorption and pyrite depression to occur. Test work, using a pilot regrind mill, showed that a reduction in grind size resulted in an increase in DO demand.A range of oxidising agents were tested in the laboratory and using a pilot flotation rig set-up in the plant. Oxygen was found to be the most reliable and effective agent and options for increasing oxygen delivery to the plant were explored. Norwich Park Mine commenced production of export coking coal in November 1979. Attention to consumables control was limited during the early running of the plant. Once higher than anticipated magnetite consumption levels were confirmed, efforts were directed at determining the causes. Extensive plant sampling, monitor- ing of operational procedures and plant modif- ications have led to a significant reduction in magnetite usage.

The cost-effectiveness of blasts involving radiating blastholes is cur- rently restricted in the following ways. (a) Significant percentages of potential explosion energy are not being liberated; the collar sections of some charges are being dislocated and/or desensitised by the detonations of adjacent earlier-firing charges. (b) If the minimum charge spacing is too small, detonation of an early- firing charge can initiate an adjacent charge sympathetically, thereby eliminating the benefit of any intended inter-charge delay. (c) The overall distribution of energy is poor. Appreciably better fragmentation would be achieved if current drill- ing patterns were to be replaced by staggered fans/rings having a toe spac- ing : burden ratio of about 4 : 1. This wide-spaced pattern would enable a higher percentage of the potential energy to be released, would reduce the incidence of sympathetic detonation and would provide a superior overall distribution of this liberated energy. If improved fragmentation is not required, the proposed fan/ring design should allow a significant expansion of the blasthole pattern with consequential cost savings in drill- ing, explosives and initiation.

"Underground mine scheduling decision-making has been based on production requirements, equipment productivities and the mine planner’s instincts on the best scheduling strategy for the mine to optimise the net present value (NPV) of a project.In the last few years, innovative software has been developed to optimise underground schedules based on NPV. The schedule optimisation tool (SOT) allows the user to set up scenarios based on grade, metal content, capital and operating costs.This paper discusses the results of two case studies undertaken using the SOT software to optimise the NPV of the projects.In each case study, the SOT software has been applied in two ways:using the original mine planner’s scenario and determining whether the NPV could be improved by changing resource capacitieschanging the scheduling goals to determine whether a different mining strategy would have a better NPV outcome.The outcomes of the case studies demonstrate that the mine layout and design were contributing factors to the overall improvement of the NPV and that SOT has a more noticeable impact on the NPV of projects where less sequence constraints are required, such as geotechnical sequencing and access development.CITATION:Ebbels, A M, 2016. The development of Western Australian magnetite deposits has lead to the design of some of the largest grinding mills and plants in the world. One of the projects demonstrates the efficiency gains possible by developing a simple yet thorough test program for circuit design. By drawing on the experience of current magnetite operations in Australia and the Mesabi and Marquette iron ranges in the United States, a basic flowsheet was developed. Through comprehensive testwork with AG, ball and stirred milling the flowsheet was optimized to take full advantage of each grinding mill’s strengths to reach the required final grind size. Laboratory work was verified in the pilot plant to optimize the energy efficiency of each grinding step while ensuring adequate liberation at each step for sufficient gangue rejection. By using three stages of grinding, the ball mill can best be employed in ensuring all top size gangue material is liberated and removed in the second magnetic separation step. The inclusion of the IsaMill, with its inherent steep product size distribution, as the tertiary grinding stage ensured that maximum grade was achieved and simplified the downstream process while giving further improvements in total grinding capital and operating costs. In this way the combination of the two technologies downstream from the AG mill is far more efficient than either would be on its own by reducing the total installed power by 1/3 and annual grinding media cost by 2/3.

Optimisation of capital in the development process is critical to the profitability of any new mining venture. The process of optimisation should apply to all aspects, that is the financing, management, revenue, reporting and, of course, the development of the project. Unfortunately, too much emphasis has been placed on the optimisation of the financing or reporting aspects and too little on the project itself. This paper addresses the latter.

A sulphide ion selective electrode (ISE) is suitable for control of sodium sulphide additions in flotation because it has a rapid response to changeS in S2- concentrations, can indicate -low concentrations at differentpH values, suffers from few interferences, and is robust enou'gh to use in a pulp. Three sulphidization techniques were studied using the lSE electrode for measurement and/or control of S2- levels. Metallurgy was assessedfrom concentrate grades and copper recovery.With slug additions of sodium sulphide, sulphidizing conditions were poorly defined and reproducibility tended to be poor. Although acceptable metallurgy could be achieved by multiple additions, sodium sulphide consumption was high.Controlled potential sulphidization readily gave good metallurgy. The optimum potential of the lSE for sulphidizing was about -500 mV versus SCE, but depended on sulphidization and flotation times; suitable times were3 and 5 min respectively for three to five stages. Application of this technique to previously untested ores gave good metallurgy in a first test in spite of variation by a factor of three in the sodium sulphide requirements ofthe ores.Simultaneous sulphidization and flotation was satisfactory when conducted at an lSE potential of -450 mV versus SCE. Mixed cha!copyrite-oxide copper ores responded satisfactorily.Besides optimizing sulphidization conditions it is also necessary to optimize xanthate additions (e.g. by measuring xanthate residuals).

A new bench blast design method and its realization with the assistance of the computer is introduced. The basic design principle is to define a rhomb cell, called fully- fractured zone, through a series of full scale bench crater tests and apply this geometric pattern in multi-hole, multi- row blast design. To illustrate the design method, the optimization process and assessment of blast performance are presented in the context of a case study.

Of the optimization techniques proposed in determining the optimum open pit limits, dynamic programming and graph theory have proved most successful. However, publications on these two methods lack a certain amount of rigour and clarity in exposition. Certain ideas in the methods have been clarified and additional features introduced in order to make them more sensitive to practical applications. A case study in the form of an application of these ideas on data from a producing mine is presented and discussed.

The drilling and evaluation of bore cores provides the best available statistical basis for characterizing a coal prospect. Important, long-term decisions by management frequently must be based on the results. The majority of coal mined presently is used for steam raising or the production of metallurgical coke. Common bore core tests and analyses appropriate to this usage can be cate- gorized as non-destructive, chemical, physical, petrographic, caking/plastometric and propert- ies of non-coal material. The major tests within each category are described. Certain specific information from the bore cores is required by the coal geologist, mining engineer, coal preparation engineer and the user, either individually or as a group. The optimal bore core evaluation test pro- gramme is the one which satisfies the needs of all the professional disciplines with the grtatest speed and at minimal cost. The principal steps in such a programme are listed. There is an urgent need for a bold new Australian standard to provide the necessary guidelines to an industry which at present lacks uniformity in its approach to the task.

The quality of mine planning decisions ultimately depends on reliable estimates of the characteristics of the orebody. The quant- ifiable factors such as grades or thickness can be estimated from field data gathered from outcrops or exploratory drillholes. Since outcrop data is necessarily limited to the periphery of a deposit, extensive drilling generally is required. This paper outlines a method for selecting the number and location of additional exploratory boreholes using an iterative procedure based on a mathematical optimization concept called fixed point theory. The method is illustrated through its application to an exploratory drilling program for a coal mine where optimized locations gave a lower estimate of regional and block variances than a manual Choice.

The model described in this paper has been developed for and in close collaboration with the Bong Mining Company Ltd, Liberia/West Africa. When working an irregular deposit a de- tailed short term production schedule becomes necessary in order to ensure an equal and homo- genous concentrator feed. If the irregularity of the ore body exceeds a certain degree, blen- ding facilities have to be provided between the mine and the concentrator, but even then sche- duling of the mine production is inevitable to meet the given requirements of the blending bed and to keep these conditions steady for at least some of the successive periods. To assist the planning department in set- ting up optimal production schedules a computer model has been developed using a linear pro- gramming approach. The deposit is divided into equally shaped blocks containing defined quali- ties and quantities of ore and/or waste; from which one has to select those quantities of ore which will meet the requirements of the blen- ding bed.
