Davis tube tests were conducted on a Koolanooka magnetite iron ore sample, supplied by Kingstream Steel Ltd, to determine the optimum grind size, maximum iron recovery and the cleanness of the products from low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS). The ore sample contained 38.6 per cent iron, 37.8 per cent silica, 6.5 per cent magnesia and 0.54 per cent alumina. XRD and microscopic examination showed that the main minerals in the ore were amphibole (42 per cent), magnetite (39 per cent), and quartz (14 per cent). Amphibole, (Mg, Ca, Fe),Si8O22.2(OH), containing 50.3 per cent SiO2, 35 per cent FeO and 11.5 per cent MgO is the main gangue mineral in the ore, and about 30 per cent of the total iron in the ore is contained in the amphibole. Heavy liquid separation tests showed that it is very difficult to separate iron from silica by gravity separation to obtain a high quality iron concentrate. Three grind sizes were initially tested, ie 45, 38 and 20 ¦m. It was found that grinding to 100 per cent -38 ¦m (P80 of 29 ¦m) appeared to be the best option for liberating the magnetite from gangue minerals. The iron recovery to the LIMS magnetic product for the 100 per cent -38 ¦m sample reached 73 per cent and the iron content was 65 per cent. Further test work suggested that the optimum grind size was a Psu of 25 ¦m.

The æMine to MillÆ concept is not new. In fact, it is the underlying objective of every mine. Unfortunately, in many operations the management structure and reporting systems have created independent æbusinessesÆ within the overall mining enterprise. This has created incentives to optimise the performance of each component of the operation rather than the enterprise as a whole. The Mine to Mill Conference organised by The AusIMM in October 1998 documented a number of case studies where run of mine ore was not presented to the mill in the best possible form for subsequent stages of comminution and processing. A number of examples were quoted where modest expenditure in the mine had a very significant impact on downstream process efficiency and hence costs. Examples included:the minimisation of fines in the mining and handling of iron ore; the management of fines in blasting and crushing for a copper heap leach operation; the control of blast damage, mining recovery and dilution in open cut coal operations; and the optimisation of mine fragmentation to increase mill throughput in gold and copper operations. The latter topic has been trialed at a number of mines and is referred to as æMine to MillÆ fragmentation. A number of æMine to MillÆ type investigations have been reported in the literature including Pease et al, Simkus and Dance, Nielsen, Scott et al, Kojovic et al, Kanchibotla et al, Bulow et al and Hawkes from the 1998 Mine to Mill Conference. In addition, a number of studies are in progress or the results have yet to be published. These studies have demonstrated the feasibility of obtaining the data required to characterise the breakage behaviour of ores and to model the impact of changes to blasting practices on process efficiency. Characterising the breakage behaviour of ores is a vital step in the management of fragmentation and comminution in mines. The characteristics of importance to fragmentation fall outside the parameters conventionally required to describe the economic geology of a deposit. æMine to MillÆ optimisation of fragmentation means that the mining engineer needs information from the geologist in order to be able to help the metallurgist. Providing this information requires close interaction between these groups.

Ore recovered by North Broken Hill Limited as a result of mining operations at its Broken Hill leases is obtained, at the present scale of working, in the proportions of 80% from the North mine and 20% from the British mine sections, and is composed mainly of a silver bearing, sulphide lead and zinc mineral, in association with the gangue materials mentioned later in the text.The lead-zinc sulphide lode at the North mine is deposited in folds in pre-Cambrian sedimentary schists. These folds pitch north-east at approximately 40° and dip north-west at approximately 60°. In plan the deposit appears as two lenses designated on the mine as the "Southern" and "Northern" ore-bodies.The Southern ore-body yields the main tonnage of crude ore. The sulphide mass here overlies a heavy layer of rhodonite which persists with the pitch of the lode. In the central section of this ore-body the sulphide zone is coarse grained and of high grade with a wide range of minerals in the gangue dilution. Quartz, garnet, ftuorite, rhodonite, and felspar are common, whilst chalcopyrites, pyrites, pyrrhotite and green felspar are often present. The Northern ore-body is dolomitic to siliceous in nature. Ridgeway Gold Mine is part of Cadia Valley Operations which is wholly owned and managed by Newcrest Mining Limited. It is an underground sublevel cave (SLC) operation mining approximately 5 Mt per annum. Ore control systems at Ridgeway have been designed to deliver gold and copper metal production through focussing on the ore characteristics that impact on mine and mill performance and ultimately metal delivery. This is achieved using data collection and management systems which allow data to be collected digitally with æat captureÆ validation routines. These data form the basis for forecasting and on-going systems analysis which aim to accurately assess local in situ and drawn ore characteristics. Physical attributes of ore such as draw characteristics, brow conditions, visual grade estimates and draw point sampling are routinely recorded. Ore tracking and accounting systems monitor gold and copper grades, copper mineralogy, host lithology and ore sizing. These factors have material impacts on concentrator throughput and metal recovery. Draw point recovered grades are routinely reconciled back to design data to monitor and assess draw performance. Statistical variance controls are also employed to analyse mine and plant performance and guide actions.

The Henty Gold Mine is a good example of a situation where conditional simulation and optimisation techniques may have useful impact on modelling of mineralisation distribution and ore definition. Much of the gold mineralisation at Henty is concentrated within an alteration zone which is both physically discontinuous and forms only a small fraction of the overall mineralised volume. The alteration units are mappable from diamond drill core and underground workings. Conditional simulation and optimisation techniques for ore definition have found considerable success in the open pit gold mining environment. For many reasons including computational efficiency, lack of consistent geological information, and lack of familiarity with ideas and methods among mine geologists, implementations of these methods in open pit mining have been comparatively simplistic. Modelling is commonly reduced to treating the sample data as a single geologic population. This paper discusses the application of the MP method (a particular implementation of conditional simulation and optimisation) to modelling the distribution of potential ore blocks in the Henty gold mineralisation. The approach allows the mine geologist to model both the spatial geometry of the alteration types and the gold grades associated with each alteration type in a single process. Options allow the geologist to include or exclude underground geological mapping and face sampling depending mainly on the abundance of drill hole sampling and the quality of the face sampling. An optimisation algorithm based on maximisation of profit from mining is used to assist in ore definition.

In the first part of this paper, the principal sources of dilution during underground evaluation and mining are discussed, then definitions of ore dilution currently in use are analysed. These definitions vary depending on the authors. Ten different analytical expressions of dilution percentage currently exist. It is demonstrated, with the help of a numerical example for a given mining condition, that dilution percentage results vary considerably and that they depend on the definition used. This situation makes it difficult to compare different results regarding the dilution problem, often because some of the terms used are contradictory. A new ore dilution evaluation methodology is proposed, replacing the ten different analytical expressions by only two: the planned dilution factor related to the stoping selectivity, done at the mine planning level, and the additional dilution factor related to the efficiency of the dilution control measures during stoping operations. The conclusion shows that the use of this methodology would be a definitive asset in planning, in stoping operations follow-up, and in future costs comparison studies between mining operations.

Blasting is an essentially violent process aimed to disrupt and loosen rock for productive excavation and downstream processing. Dilution of the orebody to some extent is the inevitable result, particularly in narrow vein gold mines. A small change in gold recovery is usually a strong lever on revenue generation. As a result blast designs are carefully engineered to both minimise and control the direction of rock movement. Traditionally blast designs in gold mines have used the minimum powder factor that will still permit rock excavation. This now conflicts with the recent industry trend to optimise the total process flowsheet from the mine to the mill. Numerous mines have achieved success in reducing total mining cost by increasing powder factors. Not only is explosive energy cheaper than mechanical comminution energy requirements, the increased blasting effect may deliver benefits across all downstream processes of digging, hauling, crushing and milling. Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) Fimiston operation is the largest gold mine in Australia, located in the heart of the Kalgoorlie Goldfields. Blast dilution has been reduced at KCGM by managing location of blast boundaries and by firing along strike to choked faces. Significant economies of scale have resulted from application of a bulk mining methods. The bench height of 10 m is the largest in the Western Australian Goldfields, and is typically mined in a single pass with large face shovels. Recent increases in production rates in both the mine and mill has been partly attributed to a 30 per cent increase in powder factor. KCGM then examined the benefit of a further 18 per cent increase in powder factor to 1.0 kg/BCM. A concern though was the impact of very high powder factors resulting in excessive blast movement and subsequently ore dilution. This was the subject of a project conducted with Orica Explosives. OricaÆsDMC(Distinct Motion Code) blast model was applied to understand the effect of not just further increases in powder factor but also blast geometry and explosive type. The modeling work demonstrated that high powder factors may be applied with minimal increase in ore dilution provided the combination of blast geometry and explosive type is optimised. These results are currently being implemented to achieve further reductions in total mining costs without a significant impact on recovery.

Throughout the Kalgoorlie Field the dominant factors influencing all planned exploratory work are: firstly, the general geology of the district, and, secondly, the lode fracture pattern. Superimposed on these, there are innumerable faulting problems which tend to complicate the search for ore.In this paper it is proposed to deal primarily with the lode fracture pattern and to touch on the general geology only insofar as it affects ore distribution. So much has been written on Kalgoorlie geology that it would be impossible to review the literature adequately in a brief paper such as this. The basic facts of rock types and rock distribution are well established and the broad structure of the field is known in the central portion, though it is less well established towards the northern and southern ends.The latest descriptions of the general geology are those of Stillwell (1), and Gustafson (2), -and these represent the basis of current knowledge.GENERAL GEOLOGY.The field is six miles long and about one mile wide, the long axis trending north-west. The "Golden Mile," or heart of the mining 'area, covers a length of three miles in the southern section, and consists of a central core of quartz dolerite greenstone which merges into uralitic quartz 'dolerite on its western margin. Reconciliation of the ore reserve has been an integral part of mine planning since Bougainville Copper Ltd. commenced mining operations at Panguna in 1972. Confidence in the ore reserve is considered essential, both for long term planning of the deposit, and for fair and accurate reporting of the mining resource to shareholders. Recoverable, proven reserves are published annually. Although the ore reserve quoted is based only on diamond drill hole (DDH) information on a 122 metre by 122 metre grid, predictions are regularly reviewed against production. Concentrator results are taken to be the best estimate of grade and tonnage. Surveyed mined perimeters and average blasthole grades are reconciled at the end of each month against the concentrator figures. Predictions of the in-pit reserve are made using an orebody model. DDH and blasthole (BH) sample grades are used to make predictions for both long and short term planning. This paper describes how reconciliations are used to validate ore reserves at Panguna. Development of the orebody model is described, and some of the difficulties encountered in doing reconciliations are addressed.

Laser ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS) analysis of fluid inclusions trapping mineralising solutions in major porphyry-copper deposits indicates that copper concentrations can reach 103 - 104 ppm in both dilute, CO2-bearing fluids and in high salinity brines. Non-Cl transport of Cu is implicated. Au has been determined at 0.2 - 0.4 ppm in the low salinity fluids and may be co-transported with Cu. In contrast, high concentrations of Fe, Mn, Zn and Pb are only attained in brines and correlate strongly with Cl-indicating chloride transport. Physical and/or temporal separation of these fluid types can therefore producemetal fractionation within porphyry systems. Evidence concerning the behaviour of Mo is less clear but brine transport appears to be favoured; phase separation is one mechanism that may account for the fractionation of Mo from Cu and the formation of quartz-molybdenite veins. Coupling between deformation processes and rock permeability is a major factor influencing the architecture of fluid migration and the localisation of ore deposition in several types of hydrothermal ore systems in middle to upper crustal regimes. Permeability in many hydrothermal systems is controlled by a dynamic competition between deformation-induced porosity-creation processes and porosity-destruction processes. Localisation of deformation within faults, fractures and shear zones leads to flow localisation, with large-scale flow systems forming when active faults and shear zones link to create percolation networks. Numerical modelling techniques are used to explore the growth of fracture networks and evolution of network connectivity during progressive deformation. Initial results indicate that networks reach a percolation threshold at very low strains. Near the percolation threshold, flow is localised along a small proportion of the total fracture population and favours localised ore deposition. At higher strains, flow is distributed more widely throughout the fracture population and may provide reduced potential for production of high-grade deposits. The distribution of mesothermal gold deposits along a small subset of the total population of co-active faults and shear zones in the Archaean Yilgarn Craton in Western Australia indicates that some hydrothermal systems maintain themselves near the percolation threshold for a substantial part of the lifetime of the system. Fluid-driven growth of fault/fracture/shear networks may lead them to self-organise near the percolation threshold.

Two genetic types of base metal deposits occur in the Wainivesi area of central eastern Viti Levu. The Wainivesi deposit is now considered to be a stratiform volcanogenic type, and the Wailotu and Wainiviti deposits are described as contact metasomatic with some hydrothermal manifestations. The Wainivesi mineralization is correlated with the Tertiary "e" stage, i.e. uppermost Oligocene-Iowermost Miocene. Tertiary "e" stage rocks in Fiji are therefore potential ore producers of stratiform volcanogenic type. On the basis of plate tectonics with Fiji part of the New Hebrides Arc prior to rifting apart in the late Miocene, stratiform volcanogenic deposits of the Wainivesi type may also occur in rocks of comparable type and age in the New Hebrides.

Grinding of iron ore is an essential step to utilise ore fines for pelletisation needed for DRI units. While preparing iron ore pellets for DRI production, the iron ore needs extensive grinding which is highly energy consuming step causing the process to become non-viable in some cases. In the present paper an attempt has been made to evaluate grinding performance of thermally treated ore compared to normal ore grinding. Such thermal pre-treatment has been found to reduce the energy requirement with lower consumption rate of grinding media. It has been observed that by applying thermal shock the ore is rendered weak with improved grindability. The stresses generated due to thermal treatment may extend existing micro-cracks in the ore and in some cases it may even nucleate fresh cracks. Experimental studies carried out on thermally treated hematitite ore reveals that the heating to 400¦C followed by water quenching can cause a reduction of 45 per cent in grinding energy. Some major mineral deposits in northern Australia are found in preconsolidation slump disturbances in the sediments.In the retransported marine sediments at Tennant Creek, breccia beds and disturbances are found which have localized later mineral deposits such as the Peko copper orebody. These disturbances are thought to result from slumping, turbidity flow and various types of "semi-fluidized" subaqueous slides intermediate between slumps and turbidity currents.Movements are found to ~ause widespread disturbances in the sediments such that subsequent mineralization can spread through a large volume of rock giving rise to orebodies greater than those localized by tectonic structures.A similarity is noted between the sedimentary disturbances at Tennant. Creek and those at Mount Isa and Mary Kathleerr. It is suggested that disturbed beds which are host rocks to ore minerals in these mines may also be due to movements of the sediments before compaction.Certain characteristics of the slumped rocks can be recognized and limited generalizations can be made about the shape, extent and habit of these host rocks and the orebodies they contain.INTRODUCTIONSubmarine slumping and· turbidity current retransport are almost entirely responsible for some types of deep marine sediments.However, little attention has yet been drawn to slump deposits and associated disturbances bedded in the sediments as features localizing later mineralization.A study. has been made by the writer of the slump and associated phenomena of the ,Tennant Creek field where many mineralized bodies, including some gold and copper orebodies, occur as replacements of coarse fragmental slump...

All major companies now producing iron ore in Brazil currently employ or are planning to employ some sort of concentration method to upgrade their fine sized products (sinter feed fines and pellet feed fines). The criteria for the selection of the most suitable concentration method for each application include a series of parameters; the most important among them being related to ore mineralogy. This paper reviews the concentration operations currently employed in Brazil and shows how ore mineralogy plays a fundamental role in the selection of a given method. Examples involving gravity concentration (jigs and spirals), magnetic separation (Rare Earth wet drums, ferrous wheel, and Jones type magnetic separators) and flotation (especially column flotation) are discussed. Fundamentally important for the selection of a concentration method is the mineralogy of iron-bearing minerals and gangue minerals presented to the feed to the concentration unit operation. For instance, the presence of liberated quartz as the major gangue mineral for a pellet feed size stream generally indicates that flotation will be the best selection for the concentration of that stream. However, even if magnetite is present only in the form of crystal relicts within hematite grains, it may lead to the selection of either magnetic separation alone or a combination of magnetic separation and flotation for concentrating such material. Presence of gibbsite and/or kaolinite as the major phase containing alumina will also affect the selection of the concentration method in all cases. Again for the case of pellet feed size streams, kaolinite does not interfere with flotation whereas gibbsite tends to contaminate flotation concentrate (pellet feed fines) as it is depressed together with iron oxides and hydroxides during the reverse cationic flotation process.

BM37 is a bonanza-grade (>30 ppm Au) ore shoot of the Maria Lode of the Karangahake adularia-sericite epithermal deposit in the southern Hauraki Goldfield. Samples from BM37 contain up to weight percent gold. The ore shoot is a vein that pinches and swells, but is typically tens of cm thick, and locally exceeds 0.5 m in true width. Gold occurs as irregular anhedral electrum grains that range up to 300 microns across and contain 38 to 59 wt per cent Au (ave. 52 wt per cent Au). Electrum occurs in sulphide-rich bands in association with pyrite, chalcopyrite, acanthite, galena, sphalerite, and local covellite. Lower grade samples contain local to rare mckinstryite [(Ag, Cu) 2S] and polybasite [(Ag, Cu) 16 (As, Sb) 2S11]. Pyrite from BM37 is nearly stoichiometric; it lacks the As that commonly occurs at up to percent levels in pyrite from other veins in the goldfield. Acanthite also contains low quantities of trace metals, and typically has less than 2.5 per cent Se. The vein shows complex textures. Bonanza grade sulphide-rich ginguro bands form discrete layers adjacent to the vein margins, and occur as breccia fragments encased by later massive to comb quartz with local quartz after platy calcite. Both the breccia fragments and ginguro bands are cross-cut by later quartz veins. Textures thus indicate that formation of the high-grade portions of BM37 resulted from one or more discrete events that differed markedly from the events that formed the bulk of the vein.

I report results of over 850 microprobe analyses of sulfides, sulfosalts and electrum from the Favona adularia-sericite epithermal deposit of the Waihi district in the southern Hauraki Goldfield of New Zealand. Pyrite and marcasite from altered wall rocks that enclose the veins are stoichiometric, with compositions of FeS2, and no significant trace elements. In contrast, pyrite in veins commonly contains appreciable As (up to 3.2 wt per cent), and locally contains several tenths of a percent of Cu, Zn, Co, Ag and Sb. Vein pyrite may contain up to 0.22 per cent Au, but Au contents do not show a positive correlation with As. Limited electrum data indicate that it ranges from Ag0.47 Au0.53 to Ag0.54Au0.41Cu0.01Zn0.04. Chalcopyrite is stoichiometric CuFeS2, and most galena is PbS, but some galena contains up to 4.4 wt per cent Se, which substitutes for S in its lattice. The galena is not argentiferous; the highest Ag content is 0.45 wt per cent Ag. Sphalerite averages 4 mol per cent FeS, but ranges up to 15 mol per cent. Tetrahedrites [(Cu,Ag)10(Zn,Fe)2(As,Sb)4S13] show variable substitution, but most are Cu- Zn- and Sb-rich. Veins also contain aguilarite (Ag4SeS), stromeyerite (CuAgS), naumannite (Ag2Se), and mckinstryite [(Ag,Cu)2S].

The Tolukuma Gold Deposit is hosted by metamorphic and volcanic rocks, and igneous intrusions. Dilatant structures for the main veining appear to be provided by post-metamorphic flexure/faulting; syn-mineralisation tectonics is recognised from the en-echelon patterns of much of the veining. A SSE trending structure containing high grade mineralisation has acted as a major dilational zone within or at the contacts of porphyry intrusions. An ESE trend has controlled numerous dilational structures splaying eastward from the SSE vein structure and containing medium grade mineralisation.Early hydrothermal activity (Stage I) is represented by unmineralised, pyrite-rich brecciation and fracturing. Associated chloritic veining is indicative of single phase neutral-chloride fluids upwelling in relatively low fracture controlled nenneahility

The silver deposits of Rockvale near Armidale, N.S.W., occur in fissure veins in epi-Permian granite. The ore is fine grained, mineralogically complex, and contains twenty-seven different minerals including eleven silver minerals. The ore is characterized by a unique multiple unmixing from a sphalerite solvent. The following minerals have exsolved from solid solution in sphalerite: pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, cubanite I, cubanite II (chalcopyrrhotite), valleriite, "brown" stannite, "olive" stannite, argentian tetrahedrite, pyrargyrite, and an unknown grey-white mineral. Several of these minerals derive from a second-stage unmixing, the immediate solvents of which are the products of earlier exsolutions.INTRODUCTIONSmall silver-rich base metal deposits occur at several localities near Armidale in the New England district of New South Wales. Chief among these are the Tulloch Mine and the Rockvale Mine at Rockvale, 27 miles SE. of Armidale, and the Tait's Gulley deposits some 15 miles NE. of Armidale.At Rockvale (Kenny, 1928), irregular lenses of lode material, principally quartz and calcite, occur along a zone of shearing in biotite granite and altered sediments. The orebodies had a maximum width of 6 ft but averaged 2 ft 6 in. The largest lens was 150 ft long and 50 ft high. The Rockvale deposits were worked for both arsenic and silver; 2,897 tons of arsenic were produced but no figures are available forsilver.Little is known of the Tait's Gulley deposits which occur in folded arenites containing small but rich veins of pyrargyrite with base metal sulphides.The sediments in these localities are possibly Silurian.
