The orebodies at Kambalda are complexly faulted, folded and intruded. It is realized that the ore reserve calculations will be wrong and steps are taken to minimise the errors. The calculations are a combination of computer data handling and manual input. Initially Geological Ore Reserves are calculated and then production data and experience are used to produce a Planned Mining Reserve. At all stages maximum professional judgement is incorporated. The basis of the calculation is the polygonal method of area estimation, and production reconciliations together with the style of data available indicate that it is a most suitable technique. It is also a tech- nique that is easily communicated to all levels from operators to management.

The reliable estimation of ore reserves in mineral sand deposits depends on drilling methods and assay techniques that have been specially developed within the industry. Improvement of these techniques is a continuing process, as variations within and between deposits are highlighted during the actual mining operation. Constant monitoring of metallurgical losses along with mineral production allows comparison of mineral tonnages accounted for by mining, with original calculated reserves. A review of ore reserves in the Jerusalem Creek field from scout drilling in the sixties, through mining in the seventies, shows the progression from understatement prior to mining, to the present when more than two thirds of the reserves have been depleted.

A block model of the orebody is used to plan a mine. The first requirement is to identify ore to be extracted, discarding waste, so as to meet target grade, generally in multiple analytes. Commonly, cut-off values are set for each analyte, so as to distinguish ore from waste. It will be shown that, if more than one analyte is important, this procedure is wasteful of ore and a composite cut-off function is preferable.A second requirement is to sequence the ore extraction so that the variability in ore grade is controlled: failure to do so will result either in low-quality ore being marketed, or excessive re-handling being required to blend the ore to reduce the grade variability.A third requirement is that the extraction sequence should be such as to control the amount of equipment movement required, enhancing the equipment productivity.The overall objective, to optimise the Net Present Value (NPV) of the mined ore, is simply stated but complex in realisation, since so many factors, such as target grade, grade variability, equipment choice, equipment movement, and downstream blending all have alternatives which can be traded off against each other, and all of which contribute to the costs and benefits making up the total NPV.There exist commercial packages for ore selection and mine planning. However, they are often of a ‘black box’ nature, and users are sometimes not fully aware of the criteria being applied. In particular, the treatment of quality as a multidimensional vector may be problematic. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the issues involved and to suggest an alternative set of approaches, which should complement existing commercial treatments.The discussion will be illustrated specifically by reference to the mining of iron ore, but the issues are relevant to a wide variety of mining situations

Iron ore is normally sold in bulk at certain specifications. These include iron grade and specific contaminant grades, typically silica, alumina, phosphorous and sulfur. These target grades are normally agreed between the mining company (producer) and the steelmaking company (customer).This study presents an alternative to traditional cut-off grade calculation, using linear programming that maximises the total ore inventories within a predefined mining envelope while meeting the specified targets. Providing a feasible mining sequence that maintains the target grade is not covered in this study.The method was applied to Fortescue’s operations. The complexity arising from differing ore quality within each mining horizon, variable yields and upgrades and the need to control iron and contaminant grades provided a good opportunity to test an alternative method of ore selection. The new method significantly reduced the time spent in cut-off selection and sensitivity analysis, and provided an optimised solution.CITATION:Aros, M and Reilly, L, 2014. Ore selection is generally a highly subjective task, with emphasis on producing product with a consistent target grade matching a perceived market requirement. A composite selection criterion ‘Comp’ (a linear function of the grade vector) can be used to maximise ore tonnage at a specified target grade (in Fe and contaminants) extractable from a block model. The blocks correspond to the selective mining units, with grades interpolated from diamond drill hole data. An iterative procedure has been developed to identify the coefficients and cut-off value for the composite function ‘Comp’, maximising potential ore tonnage at target grade.Commonly, target grade is predetermined by marketing; however, there is no guarantee that maximising ore tonnage at a specified target grade maximises the potential value of the mine. If the value of ore could be expressed as a linear function of the grade components, then these coefficients would be appropriate for the selection criterion ‘Comp’. The cut-off value for ‘Comp’ would correspond to the marginal cost of production; all blocks with a ‘Comp’ score above the cut-off would be classified as ore; and the cumulative grade of these ore blocks would be the average product grade over the life of the mine.Unfortunately, no such value function for iron ore is generally available. Methods for estimating the value function are discussed, using the spot price and sensitivities based either upon operational tolerances for Fe and the contaminants or upon published price differentials. This approach has been applied to an anonymous Pilbara deposit with about one million blocks averaging 1.1 kt. It is shown how the optimal target grade, cut-off grade and maximum tonnage can all be explored as a function of marginal cost and iron ore price. Alternatively, given marginal cost and an iron ore price, the effects of changing the tolerances (and therefore the relative costs of the contaminants) can also be explored.It is suggested this procedure can enable informed decision-making for an iron ore mine. Rather than setting final policy for the entire life-of-mine, the method enables target grades and tonnage estimates to be revised by re-computation as the mine life proceeds to recognise changes in market conditions and knowledge about the resource.It should be emphasised that this paper is concerned with ore selection rather than ore sequencing. Appropriate ore selection is a necessary but not sufficient condition for maximising value. Having identified the set of blocks that potentially maximise value, the sequence in which they are mined will present a trade-off between producing at constant grade and extracting high value ore early. The sequencing issue is not considered here. It is shown that optimum ore selection for an open pit mine is independent of any consideration of discount rates, although ore sequencing will depend upon the time value of money if the product grade is to vary across time.CITATION:Everett, J E, 2015. Two types of low sulphidation epithermal deposits that have different gangue mineralogies and ore shoot geometries are recognised. One has laterally near-continuous ore shoots over a significant vertical interval that consist of quartz, chalcedony, pyrite, minor base metal sulphides and adularia, with electrum. The other type of deposit has discrete near-vertical ore shoots of a lesser vertical extent, that consist of quartz, pyrite, base metal sulphides, sulphosalts, electrum and in their upper parts barite, which are enclosed in veins of earlier quartz. The gold mineralisation in both deposit types is considered to be a co-precipitate of pyrite, with that in the first type of deposit produced by prolonged boiling in an upflow of a hydrothermal system (Upflow Deposits); an example is Waihi in New Zealand. The other type is produced by mixing, a deep water primed for gold deposition by prior limited boiling, with an iron-bearing oxidised condensate of the steam released by the boiling, in an outflow of a hydrothermal system (Outflow Deposits); an example is Thames in New Zealand. Early recognition of these different types of deposits can be used to develop mineralisation models of predictive value on which to focus exploration drilling. Early recognition of an Upflow Deposit promotes an extensive program to delineate the extension of the main ore shoot. In contrast recognition of an Outflow Deposit requires a more intensive approach to find individual ore shoots which, although smaller than those found in Upflow Deposits, may be high-grade, particularly if there is earlier mineralisation present to act as a protore.

Silver-lead mineralization at Indooroopilly, Queensland, extends upwards from Upper Triassic rhyolite which intrudes phyllite-containing Palaeozoic mineralization.Sulphides and magma were emplaced in a special structural site which underwent dilational fracturing while surrounding rocks were block-faulted and compressed. This site lies at tbe intersection of dykes, faults, and a lineament adjacent to a Middle Triassic granitic stock.Structural controls at Indooroopilly are attributed to the effects of piston faulting. Exploration for similarly controlled deposits should be directed towards structural intersections near stocks or batholiths which have intruded mineralized belts. Priority should be given to structural intersections which were sites of block-faulting and igneous activity under compressional tectonic conditions.Favourable sites lacking surface mineralization may contain ore at depth as piston faulting produces 'blind' ore deposits.

The treatment plant at Martha Mine was upgraded from a nominal throughput of 110tph (O.93mtpa) to 150tph (1.25mtpa) late 1999. Post-upgrade performance did not meet expectations when treating either the competent primary ore or the clay-rich oxide ore.   ò Plant throughput is constrained by milling capacity when treating the competent primary ore. This is not an issue at present as current plant feed is oxide ore from the top of the open-pit, but will become so in future years as the pit deepens. To counter this future threat, ball mill power has been restored to 1100kW through modifications to the drive train. The addition of a crushing circuit may also be necessary.   ò Plant throughput was originally constrained by thickener and leach/adsorption tank issues when treating the oxide are. Changes to plant equipment and operations has seen the removal of these constraints and throughput on this material is no longer a problem.   The most significant issue facing plant staff at present is the high silver grade and its impact on gold recovery. These high grades impact upon recovery through losses caused by insufficient leach and adsorption capacity. To counter this, the geology, mining, and milling teams are working together to blend the high grade silver zones with lower grade ores - this is seen to be the quickest and most cost effective way to deal with the issue. The plant design has also been evaluated with a view to modifying it to cope with the higher silver grades. The viability of these modifications will depend on cost and time (that is, the length of time to implement any modifications versus the length of time to mine out the high silver zones).

Peko Mines N.L. has considerable experience in the treatment of a wide range of comparatively small orebodies.Gold-silver, bismuth, and sulphide and oxide copper ores are treated under difficult geographical conditions.Treatment of these ores is complicated by some unusual metallurgical factors.Metallurgical operations are described, including the treatment of the gold-bismuth-copper ore from Juno. The new Warrego mine is to have a highly instrumented concentrator by December 1971. Autogenous grinding is being considered.

Renison Limited produces high and low grade tin concentrates at an annual rate of 5000 tonnes of contained tin metal. In spite of the fine average cassiterite grain size, emphasis is placed on gravity concentration methods to produce a high grade final product. Cassiterite flotation is considered and operated as a gravity circuit scavenger responsible for approximately 15 percent of recovered tin metal as a fine grained low grade concentrate. Metallurgical problems mainly result from ore-type variations which may be aggravated by a number of circulating loads. The rationalisation of circuitry is being studied to provide more effective control by operators and to allow exploitation of current control and modelling techniques.

"Ore is the economic portion of a mineral deposit that can be extracted economically. Hence an ore type is a classification of the ore based on one or more dominant characteristics in order to enable communication between unit operations and/or technical disciplines.In project evaluation, ore types are often defined early based on geological observations by geologists and initial metallurgical testing is based around this classification even though a number of processing options can be under evaluation. However, the geological drivers of performance for each of these processes can be very different and the ore type classification for one process may not be relevant for another. In operations an ore type, as either defined in the project evaluation phase or those that evolve with additional knowledge, is unlikely to provide the knowledge required across all the unit operations. The ore type has a meaning to someone but does not necessarily for all unit operations across the value chain.Geometallurgical or orebody knowledge has evolved through the consideration of multiple processes within the value chain, the improved understanding of variability of process performance within ore types and the effect on the complexity of the mineral extraction processes. Furthermore orebody knowledge has been moving from personal based knowledge and understanding to a more process oriented approach where measurement and spatial and process performance modelling is playing a greater role. Advances in mine planning and scheduling allow for both detailed analysis of the block model and the expected extraction processing attributes across various time scales. This capability of analysing and describing the complexity still requires to be communicated to the various unit operations, which may be beyond the traditional classification of an ore type.The limitations of an ore type and potential alternatives to enable the relevant information to be communicated to the relevant groups are outlined through a number of case examples across the value chain.CITATION:Jackson, J and Young, M F, 2016. Process plants are characterised by variability of performance over a wide range of time-scales; reflected in fluctuations in metal recovery, concentrate grade, plant throughput and reagent costs. In turn, these fluctuations impact financial metrics such as operating costs and revenue. The primary cause of plant variability is variation in the physical, lithological and mineralogical characteristics of the ore fed to the plant. The variability of the ore is driven by the intrinsic heterogeneity of the geology and mineralogy of the orebody, the mining method and mine production plan, the capacity to stockpile and blend, as well as the plant flow sheet and the level of plant automation. Whilst the impact of ore variability on process plants is universally recognised, it is rarely quantified in financial terms. Consequently, opportunities to reduce its impact are often overlooked due to the lack of a basis for a quantifiable cost-benefit analysis to justify improvement initiatives. This paper will present case studies using production data from the Renison tin concentrator and a zinc concentrator. These case studies demonstrate that as the standard deviation of plant head grade increases (as a proxy for ore variability), plant metal recovery subsequently reduces. The metal recovery is then converted into plant revenue losses, to quantify the economic impact of ore variability. The Renison case study demonstrated that whilst a very rare occurrence, revenue losses were as high as 34 per cent (relative to the baseline) when standard deviation was at its highest. The zinc concentrator case study demonstrated that revenue losses were as high as 6 per cent (relative to the baseline) when standard deviation was at its highest. Options are available for reducing and managing ore variability in the process plant. These options include changing mining practices so that the ore is fed to the plant with less variability, more advanced process plant control systems and the use of predictive geometallurgical models.

NATURE OF ORETHE Edna May ore consists mainly of clean quartz of a moderately hard and tough nature. The gold content is "free" and fairly coarse, so that a large percentage is recovered by amalgamation. The ore is practically free from metallic minerals.GENERAL OUTLINE OF PLANT AND TREATMENTThe ore, received from underground in trucks, is broken by a jaw breaker, then stamp-milled, follow~d by partial filie-grinding in pans. Mercury is used both in the mill boxes and pans. The pulp, on leaving the pans, passes over amalgamating tables and is then elevated by tailings pulp to cone classifiers and separated into a sand and slime product, each product receiving a separate cyanide treatment-sand by leaching in vats and slime by agitation and decantation in a "Trent" plant. Gold solutions from both sand and slime are precipitated together by zinc shavings in the usual type of precipitation boxes. Accumulated slime is trucked from the dam to a vortex mixer and from this point receives with the cement slime the same treatment.ORE BREAKING AND TRANSPORTThe ore is trucked from the brace of the shaft along an overhead line to the breaker station. Hence it is, by means of a "kick-up" dumped upon a grizzly, set with 2-in. spaces, the oversize being broken by a 15 x '9 Fraser and Chalmer jaw...

Orebodies in the Mt. Charlotte - Hannans North Area N. & B. of the town of Kalgoorlie provide a marked'dontrast to the pyrite - telluride lodes of the Golden Mile, although both groups of orebodies appear to be fundamentally related. These highly siliceous telluride free orebodies N. of the Golden Mile are closely related to strong oblique faulting. The Golden Mile. lodes, while possessing an apparent over-all relationship to the oblique faults also have a close relationship to E.-dipping strike faults.

S. A. Tomich (Consulting Geologist, Perth) : I would like to commend Mr. Haycraft on his presentation on the economic geology of the North End of Kalgoorlie. This is an intriguing area which is in the Kalgoorlie field but not of it, inasmuch as it is separated spatially from the main Golden Mile by the Golden Pike Fault. Mr. Haycraft has stressed the differences-the mineralogical and structural differences of economic significance between the two areas.I would like to ask whether he is satisfied that the lithological sequence in the North End is the duplicate of that in the main Golden Mile area irrespective of the postulated effects of erosion, and more specifically whether there is any chance that the quartz-dolerite-greenstone of the North End may be in any way dissimilar from the quartz-dolerite-greenstoneof the Golden Mile which is tellurude bearing.J. A. Haycraft: In relating the quartz-dolerite in the Hannan's North-Mount Charlotte area back to the Golden Mile, we find some quite close similarities. Although the rocks are similar they are not necessarily one and the same.At Mount Charlotte we have three varieties of dolerite- a coarse-grained gabbroic dolerite on the eastern side of the orebody, the host rock medium grained and on the western side, a fine grained dolerite. Further west we have an amphibolitic variety of quartz dolerite.Recent drilling south of the Golden Pike fault on the Enterprise No. 20 level had indicated a remarkably similar sequence of rocks. The Coeur dÆAlene mining district in northern Idaho, USA is the second largest producer of silver in the world. The Proterozoic Revett Formation hosts most of the mesothermal Ag-Pb-Zn vein ore in the district; it consists of informally designated lower, middle, and upper members. All three members show up to an order of magnitude of southward thickening across the regionally significant Osburn fault. Changes in thickness of the Revett Formation across the Osburn fault reflect a major, down-to-the-south, crustal-scale fault that:was active during sedimentation, was periodically reactivated during the structural and metallogenic history of the district, and likely provided first-order control over regional fluid flow during mineralization events. Where vein structures intersect favourable strata, they produce rich ore; where vein structures cross unfavourable strata, they are poorly mineralised or barren. The most favourable host rock in the district is quartzite, which accounts for the large production from the quartzite-rich Revett Formation.The district has five main types of hydrothermal alteration:feldspar destruction, hydrothermal bleaching, carbonatisation, sulfidation, and silicification. Feldspar destruction is the most extensive and pervasive type of alteration, involving the district-wide absence of feldspar from Belt Supergroup rocks. Hydrothermal bleaching results from the destruction of hematite; it forms alteration envelopes that extend for tens to hundreds of metres into the wall rocks around many of the mineralised veins. Siderite alteration is most diagnostic of mineralisation, forming alteration envelopes that extend for tens to hundreds of metres into the wall rocks around all mineralised veins. Fine-grained arsenopyrite and/or fine-grained pyrite commonly form alteration zones adjacent to high-grade ore shoots that extend for metres to tens of metres into the wall rocks. Widespread silicification is most easily recognised by the presence of numerous quartz veins.

The importance of orebody definition and optimisation in project development cannot be overstated. Inappropriate orebody definition is the single most important reason for project under performance and/or failure. Without the firm foundation of good orebody definition, the structure of a project cannot be assembled reliably. Many factors need to be considered in the process of orebody definition. These factors are well summed up in paragraph 123 of The Institute's Code and Guidelines for Assessment and Valuation of Mineral Assets and Mineral Securities (Valmin Code). The factors range from the initial geological data through assaying, geotechnical and hydrogeological factors to mining and metallurgical considerations. There are other factors which also need to be considered including marketing and environmental factors. This paper briefly reviews some of these factors and their impact on project development. Three examples are presented where one or more of these factors have had significant impact on the development of the Project.
