The characterisation and assessment of waste rock has been the subject of considerable research, and many guidance documents have been published both internationally and within Australia. While these documents provide detailed information on how to characterise waste rock, there is not a great amount of detail on how to determine the optimal waste management options from an operational viewpoint. For example, typical questions that a mine operator would seek answers to include: What placement method should be used (eg end tipping versus paddock dumping)? What is an optimal tip head height for waste placement in a storage facility? How should sulfide grade control be carried out?Defining the contributing factors to waste management and waste material placement and assessing the contribution of each variable directs these assessments towards a semi-qualitative and quantitative methodology. Quantitative methodologies show an increase in the confidence of these assessments by providing logical, measureable assessments.As part of a strategic assessment for waste management at an active mine site, a detailed risk-based investigation of the influence of variables common to waste placement was completed. These variables included placement method, placement height, sulfur grade and material conditioning (eg compaction) on the associated risks of waste material storage. The assessed risks include temperature assessments (potential for thermal take-off as a result of spontaneous combustion), toxic gas production and flow and acid production potential. Applying a numerical modelling approach to the assessment of the different waste material placement strategies allows for the variation in risk to be graphically presented and communicated through risk matrices and histograms.CITATION:Pearce, S and Lehane, S, 2015. Microstructure of CaO-SiO2-based glassy samples with various Al2O3 contents were examined quantitatively by Raman spectroscopy and 27Al MAS NMR (magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance). Sequence of multiple cluster models of aluminosilicate system modified with Ca2+ and Na+ cations have been designed, and Raman spectra simulation were carried out after geometric optimisation by quantum chemistry (QC) ab initio calculation. The functional relationship between Raman scattering cross-section (RSCS) and stress index of silicon-oxygen tetrahedron (SIT) for aluminosilicates was established, which was applied to the calibration of experimental Raman spectra. Some five-fold coordinated aluminium (AlV, around 5 per cent) and less than 2 per cent sixfold coordinated aluminium (AlVI) were detected by 27Al MAS NMR, while most of aluminium remained in tetrahedral sites (AlIV). The hyperfine quantitative results of Raman spectroscopy and NMR showed a gradually production of AlIV with addition of Al2O3, along with the significant adjustment of Qi species distribution, in which Q1, Q2 reduced and fully polymerised Q4 increased while Q3 showed a non-monotonic variation and obtained the maximum at Al2O3 = 18 mol per cent. Furthermore, the effects of aluminium to bridging oxygen bond types (T-Ob, T = Si, Al) and the degree of polymerisation were also discussed in detail. The evolution of microstructure and its correlation with the viscosity of CaO-SiO2 based melts, incorporating various Al2O3 additives, have been investigated by employing in situ high temperature Raman spectroscopy at 1823 K and viscosity model. These structural features related to composition are essential theoretic foundation to understand their properties. The average Qi evolution culminates in an overall enhancement of the degree of polymerisation. Viscosity was determined utilising a rigorously selected viscosity model, elucidating a consistent upward trajectory as Al2O3 content is incrementally added. Furthermore, a quantitative analysis of the relationship between viscosity and structure was conducted based on the average number of non-bridging oxygen per network-forming tetrahedron (NBO/T). It provides valuable insights for examining and predicting viscosity behaviour of aluminosilicate systems.

The Kalahari Manganese Deposit in South Africa accounts for 80 per cent of the worldÆs land-based mineable Mn reserves. Although the ores are primarily mined for export, South Africa is the worldÆs third largest producer of ferromanganese and ferrosilicomanganese alloy, both of which are derived from the smelting of these ores. Mineralogical analysis has traditionally been forsaken for bulk chemical assaying in quality control of smelter feeds, principally because quantitative data could not be easily produced. Yet, mineralogy plays a vital role in determining smelting behaviour, which in turn has economic implications when aspects such as energy and reductant consumption are considered. Smelting is an endothermic process, and the amount of energy input required is dependent on the minerals present in the ore, as well as their relative proportions. Further, knowing the bulk Mn oxidation state in the ores allows for calculation of the amount of oxygen that must be driven off to produce alloy, and hence the amount of reductant required. Additionally, certain minerals can be correlated with potentially deleterious elements, so that ore mineralogy can indicate penalty element distribution. Mineral abundance analysis was conducted on ores from the Kalahari Manganese Deposit using quantitative X-ray powder diffraction. Rietveld refinement using a fundamental parameters approach was applied to micronised ore samples. The mineral percentages obtained were validated using mineral chemical data together with bulk major element data derived from ICP-OES. Bulk oxidation state partitioning was then carried out knowing the Mn valence in the minerals. The results show potential for implementation of the proposed method on a smelting plant, where ore blending could be then implemented to achieve consistent feed compositions to smelters. Selective mining could also be undertaken to obtain desirable ore compositions for domestic or international markets.

Desktop X-ray powder diffraction using a D2 PHASER equipped with fast linear detector was performed on several iron ore and mill scale samples. Data were analysed using cluster analysis and Rietveld quantitative phase analysis. The quantitative mineralogy of both materials could be established. Thus the input is provided for understanding the energy consumption and the CO2 emission during iron production. Furthermore, tabletop XRD allows to distinguish iron ore from mill scales and to quantify their mixtures.

A rationale is presented for the use of vegetation on mine dumps to minimise runoff and infiltration which become vehicles for potential pollution. The unique topography of mine dumps promotes high atmospheric advection which leads to extraordinary energy levels for evaporation discharge - the driving force of vegetation "pumps". This effectiveness is mainly a function of how well the vegetation will grow on a given site. Recent advances in technology allow water discharge by vegetation to be measured semi-automatically, accurately and cost effectively. As a result the basis now exists for a thorough evaluation of the optimum mine dump vegetation cover. This paper presents the current status of dump rehabilitation as seen by the mining industry. The significant prospects for use of vegetation to minimise mine water related problems with subsequent savings in capital and operational cost are also outlined. However, to examine the crucial questions of optimum hydrological ability, suitability and cost effectiveness of various types of dump vegetation a proposition is made to interested parties in the mining industry: The CSIRO needs potential study sites to evaluate the hydrological ability of vegetation under mine dump conditions.

Borehole geophysical logging data are routinely acquired during exploration of coal deposits in Australia. These data are commonly used qualitatively to identify and correlate coal seams and geotechnically significant interburden rock units. Some quantitative analysis, such as using sonic logs for rock strength estimation is becoming increasingly widespread. This paper discusses results from a project aimed at expanding the quantitative approach to more detailed mineralogical and lithological analysis, which leads to improved geotechnical characterisation for mine planning and mining hazard reduction. A standard suite of wireline logs measuring density, natural gamma, sonic and neutron were analysed from three coal mines in the Bowen Basin. Thirty-nine samples from cored sections of the boreholes were analysed by X-ray diffraction, spectral gamma counts and hyperspectral scanning. Using a standard petrophysical approach to calculating porosity, shale and matrix components from a combination of density, natural gamma and neutron logs, a good correlation with observed mineralogy was demonstrated. However, unusual mineralogies such as heavy minerals or low-potassium clays may distort this analysis. Simultaneous evaluation of all available geophysical logs by modern data mining methods was able to show how these ambiguities may be solved.

At the treatment plant of the Broken Hill South Limited, Broken Hill, the zinc concentrates, with water, are pumped out to a more or less level area, and stored in dams to dry by drainage and evaporation.In-the construction of these dams a clay bank is first thrown up around the proposed dam site. The concentrate and water mixture are then run in from the perimeter, the solids being continuously shovelled up to increase the bank height, while the clear water is drained off at the centre and returned to the treatment plant.These dams vary in size up to 57,000 sq. ft. in area; when completed the banks are about 12 it. high, and the capacity for the largest dams is about 350,000 cub. ft., say, 20,000 tons.The survey office is called upon for a monthly survey of these dams, generally three of which are in process of building or refilling. The puggy nature of the material prohibits walking beyond the bank of the dam, therefore the following method of estimating concentrates was evolved. No originality is claimed, but as the need is for a true survey, and the results have shown the accuracy of the method, a description is warranted. The dam site is first laid out into 10-ft. squares with a theodoliteand 150-ft. steel tape, the outside lines being placed about 15 ft. from the clay bank - 15 ft. is the maximum convenient distance from the bank for working with the levelling staff mentioned later.As the dam is rarely rectangular in plan, the outside points pegged out are not always the corner of a square, but are placed to give the greatest convenience in later work, that is to say, there may be triangles and irregular figures. Ultraviolet and infrared spectroscopic analyses and the extended lluckel molecular orbital method were applied to determine the electronic and binding states of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole and the adsorption system of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole on pyrite. 2-mercaptobenzothiazole exists rather in thione form than in thiol forru and the two adsorption peaks in solution were assigned to both 7t--?rt* transitions. 2-mercaptobenzothiazole chemically adsorbs on pyrite mainly due to forming the bond between iron (pyrite) and sulphur (2-mercaptobenzothiazole).

As previously advised, two of the raw materials for Wilsons Portland Cement are cement rock and limestone, both of which are quarried by the company. We now wish to give you a brief outline of these operations. The major material, cement rock, is obtained for our Portland Quarry at Tikorangi Hill, which is one mile west of the Works and a familiar landmark to travellers on state Highway 1. The geological structure of this deposit is involved, having intensive and irregular earth movements interpreted as large scale slumps where older rocks overlay younger rocks - numerous folds, faults and overthrusts are clearly visible.

Formation of porphyry-style ore deposits starts with the metal extraction from magmas at so-called magmatic-hydrothermal transition (MHT). The processes and compositions at MHT are difficult to study as the record of them is poorly preserved. As the MHT is characterised by massive crystallisation of quartz, including quartz æeyesÆ and veins, their study can elucidate questions related to metal transport and deposition. Quartz grains from the porphyry deposits all over the world (Antapaccay, Peru; Batu Hijao, Indonesia; Climax, USA; Panguna, PNG; Far Southeast porphyry, Philippines; Rio Blanco, Chile; Omsukchan, Russia) were studied by optical, SEM-CL and BSE microscopy, electron microprobe and LA ICPMS. Quartz grains, even within each sample, have different shapes (rounded, egg-shaped, amoeboid or euhedral) and cathodoluminesence (CL) patterns (shape, number and width of bands in CL images). The outer layers of quartz are markedly different, which is unexpected if the grains had formed in the same conditions. Inflections and blurring of CL bands are often structurally associated with fractures that are commonly healed with secondary quartz and associated fluid inclusions. Our results show that quartz æeyesÆ could not crystallise from a silicate melt as normal phenocrysts. It is likely that in situ segregation of residual SiO2- and H2O-rich liquid and its solidification followed by coagulation (eg formation of silica-gel globules) took place in the magma (crystal mush) during MHT. Such globules could remain in a plastic state for a long time even at rather low temperatures. The solidification of globules occurred after bands of different composition had formed and led to fracturing of solidified and inflection of unconsolidated layers. All fluids (liquid and vapour) released from the original silicagel during solidification were trapped as inclusions (aqueous, salt-rich and sulfide). An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Three, and possibly four, distinct types of quartz-vein associated gold mineralisation are recognised in New Zealand. They are: epithermal, schist-hosted, metagreywacke-hosted and metamorphic core complex associated types. Each has a unique geological environment and structural regime which has provided the gold source, scavenging mechanism, emplacing mechanism and geometry. Each has a characteristic suite of associated metals and trace elements. The first three types form economically important gold deposits while the fourth type have been historically worked for gold and base metals. Intense exploration is currently being focussed on all four types.The epithermal type is typified by the extensive vein systems of Martha Hill, Karangahake and Golden Cross and numerous smaller examples. The veins were deposited in a near surface active volcanic environment from deeply circulating hot water. Their structure is tensional, veins are vertical-to sub-vertical and have limited depth. Their geochemistry is identical to that in active felsic hydrothermal centres in the central North Island. Major minerals are gold, pyrite, arsenopyrite, galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and argentite.

Turbidite-hosted, mesothermal lode gold deposits in Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks of the Buller Terrane, western South Island have a similar geological history and genesis to the Paleozoic lode gold deposits ofVictoria, Australia and Nova Scotia, Canada. In all three regions the gold deposits are hosted by interbedded meta-sandstone and meta-argillite that have been folded and regionally metamorphosed to greenschist facies, and locally in Nova Scotia to amphibolite facies. The gold deposits are typically narrow, structurally controlled quartz veins associated with dilatant zones in reverse faults or fold-related fractures. The principal vein types include: bedding parallel or concordant veins, discordant veins, saddle reefs, and stockwork veins. En-echelon and "ac" type veins are sometimes also gold-bearing in Nova Scotia. The contrasting competency of the host meta-argillite and meta-sandstone beds is an important factor in vein formation, particularly for the bedding parallel veins, which are typically developed within meta-argillite beds or along the contacts between meta-argillite and meta-sandstone. Veins found within meta-sandstone units are generally discordant. The deposits in Victoria are well known for their bedding-parallel veins, saddle reefs ( Bendigo ) and leather jacket reefs (Ballarat). Bedding-parallel veins are also common in Nova Scotia , along with a few examples of saddle reefs. In contrast, vein formation probably occurred later in the deformation history of the Reefton and Lyell goldfields, with most veins being bedding discordant and more typically aligned with the axial plane cleavage of the folds rather than bedding planes. The quartz lodes in one deposit, Globe-Progress, strike approximately perpendicular to the bedding and fold axes. No saddle reefs have been recorded from the Buller Terrane. Mesothermal vein morphology reflects the amount of fmite strain, the strain rate, competency contrasts, lithotypes, and the confirming pressures to which the system was exposed. On the basis of comparable depositional depths and rheologies of the host rocks, a controlling factor influencing the development of different vein styles (and timing) might be finite strain, as exemplified by the tightness of folding in the host rocks. Folding appears to be tighter in the Victorian rocks than in either the Buller Terrane or Nova Scotian rocks.

The Queensland Magnesia Project is based on a unique cryptocrystalline nodular magnesite orebody which required an innovative approach to process design in order to economically exploit the characteristics of the ore and produce a marketable range of high quality refractory magnesias for a declining world market. High quality natural refractory magnesia must have an MgO content in excess of 95 per cent with a very strictly controlled content and ratio of residual impurities such as calcium, silica and iron. The natural products compete with magnesias derived by chemical extraction from sea water or brines which exhibit very high purity but often lack other characteristics which are of value to refractory brick makers. Since start up in late-1991 QMAG has achieved a remarkable market penetration for both its deadburned and electrofused products with sales for the 1993/94 financial year representing 92 per cent of deadburned capacity and 138 per cent of original electrofused capacity respectively, all at a time when the world steel industry has been in recession.

This paper will examine the prospects for Queensland's non-fuel mineral industries as we approach the 21st century. The opportunity for growth is unprecedented. Exploitation of recent discoveries, proposals and developments in downstream processing are predicted to contribute to a doubling of the State's mineral exports to around $10 billion by the year 2000. In 1995 - 96 the value of Queensland's mineral production was $6 billion, comprising $1892 million metallic minerals, $127 million non-metallic minerals and $4 025 million total fuel minerals. For many years Queensland has been among the world's major producers of copper, silver, lead, zinc, bauxite and mineral sands. Recently Queensland has become an important producer of magnesia. Queensland's ability to compete results from its location close to rapidly developing Asian markets, the diversity of its major minerals and an increasing ability to add value to the resources base using competitively priced energy. Northwest Queensland is one of the richest base metal provinces on earth following the recent discovery of five world-class orebodies. Of these deposits, Osborne (copper-gold) has commenced production and Cannington (silver-lead-zinc) and Ernest Henry (copper-gold) are scheduled to be developed by 1997. Century Zinc Limited and the Queensland Government are negotiating with native title claimants on the development of Century (zinc-lead-silver). Expansion is in progress at the Mount Isa copper mine (renamed the Enterprise) and copper smelter and a high analysis fertiliser project may be developed based on Phosphate Hill. Korea Zinc Company Limited has reached agreement to construct and operate a 350 000 Mtpa zinc smelter/refinery near Townsville. There are future expansion prospects for the vertically integrated major industrial mineral operations based on Weipa bauxite and Kunwarara magnesite. Upgrading of the Boyne Island aluminium smelter will require a doubling of alumina consumption. Downstream processing options for Kunwarara magnesite are being investigated and are expected to lead to increases in production and the manufacture of a range of value-added products. At the Yabulu refinery near Townsville, nickel and cobalt production using imported ore is to be increased and a commercial cobalt plant is to be built. Additional opportunities for further processing and manufacturing are associated with proposed new mines at Ely (bauxite), Skardon River (kaolin) and Goondicum (ilmenite). Recently discovered resources of zeolite and perlite also offer exciting development possibilities. Other manufacturing opportunities such as glass and ceramics based on local and plentiful clay and silica sand could replace imports. Silica sand at Cape Flattery is currently exported and production is expected to double.

Laboratory leach tests have been carried out by the Australian Atomic Energy Commission to compare the effectiveness of Caro's acid (permonosulphuric acid) as an alternative oxidant to pyrolusite in the leaching of uranium ores. Results demonstrated that Caro's acid reduced acid consumption in leaching and the lime required for neutralisation of tailings liquor. The uranium extraction was unaffected by choice of oxidant.Following this study, Interox Chemicals Pty Ltd arranged a plant trial using Caro's acid at the Nabarlek uranium mill of Queensland Mines Ltd. The trial confirmed that significant savings in acid and lime usage can be achieved under plant conditions.Plant operations also demonstrated that Caro's acid has a number of significant operating advantages over pyrolusite.Queensland Mines Ltd have recently decided to convert their leaching process from pyrolusite to Caro's acid. The new system is expected to be fully operational by mid 1983.

"Mine decommissioning is the final phase in a mining project. Planning for decommissioning must commence for a proposed mine even before the government approves it. Queensland mining approvals require proponents to commit to completion (or closure) criteria defining successful rehabilitation. Queensland mining project statutory environmental authorities must also specify how progressive rehabilitation is to occur throughout the mining project. Final landforms with graded banks together with creek and run-off diversions are often required and constructed early in the life of a mining project. At closure, mining projects must demonstrate that future medium-term risks are not significant, or failing this, a residual risk financial payment must be made to the state. CSIRO climate change projections indicate that Queensland is likely to become warmer this century with less rainfall in parts and with extreme rainfall events likely to occur more frequently. This project was undertaken to?determine: if current rehabilitation planning tools assist in determining the environmental risks from mining closure not adequately addressing climate change if these risks are addressed by current rehabilitation outcomes.The north-west Queensland mining region and the central Queensland coalfields were represented in this project by five study sites. Local data sets for temperature, rainfall and rainfall intensity were produced using conservative greenhouse gas emission scenarios representing likely future atmospheres, and using the SimCLIM climate model, Evaporation data sets were also derived from available climate parameters. These projected climate variables supported equations and models used in Queensland to determine mining project rehabilitation completion criteria. Storm intensities and return intervals were directly applied to assess the likelihood of failure of engineered structures such as stormwater diversions and banks. Plant cover change determined by an existing growth model together with rainfall intensity and changes in the R and C factors of the universal soil loss equation (USLE) erosion model enabled estimates of long-term erosion rates. Flood estimates were undertaken using regional rated catchments.The study found that stormwater diversions and banks on recontoured rehabilitated landforms, if constructed to currently accepted completion criteria, would likely fail within 30 years and with the likelihood of failure steadily increasing thereafter. The change in likelihood of failure was able to be estimated and could be applied to the determination of residual environmental risk for approval of a surrender application involving rehabilitation. The USLE model showed that long-term erosion rates increased as a consequence of climate change from north to south across the Queensland mining precincts. Because the growth model did not consider carbon dioxide fertilisation affects, results would likely be worse-case.Likely climate change outcomes have consequential residual environmental risks of mining project rehabilitation failure. This increased risk may result in increased payments to the state from mining projects where high consequences exist. The Yabulu refinery of Queensland Nickel Pty Ltd located near Townsville now imports more than three million wet tonnes per year of nickel laterite ore from New Caledonia and Indonesia, making it the largest importer of any commodity in Australia. The project has illustrated that importing untreated bulk ore and re-exporting high value products makes good economic sense for the company and the nation. The economics of this exercise have been considerably enhanced in the past year by changing the project's principal product from nickel oxide sinter to refined high purity nickel metal. It is one of the few operations in the world where nickel ore is transformed to nickel metal at a single site. Several novel technological processes were developed at Yabulu and incorporated into the refinery to allow this product transition to occur. By utilising internally developed technology the new processes were installed at a capital cost of less than $10 million. It is unique for a large nickel producer to completely change the quality of its entire product range many years after the plant was constructed and considerable attention to marketing the new products has been required.

In 1990, the Queensland mining industry had come to the conclusion that new safety and health legislation based on risk identification and control was required if the mining industry was to be effectively and efficiently regulated. In particular stakeholders in the coal mining industry had arrived at this opinion after the industry had suffered a number of major underground explosions over the 14-year period between 1972 and 1986. Also by 1990, a general consensus had emerged across both the coal and metalliferous mining sectors that mining industry was over regulated and, more to the point this over regulation did not encourage industry to identify and address the underlying causes that had led to a cycle of major mining accidents in the state. The prevailing opinion was that the prescriptive legislation left the ownership of risk management with the regulator and not with the mine operator. This paper discusses the background to the development of the Queensland Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 and the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999 and the progress made in improving safety and health since the statutes came into force on the 16 March 2001. The paper discusses the issues that had to be addressed during the development of the legislation including the interaction with other legislation based on based on risk management principles that either overly or interface with the mining legislation. The effect the underground explosion at Moura No 2 in 1994 had on the final content of the new legislation is also considered. Health is often the neglected twin of safety and health legislation and the paper previews the health surveillance system being proposed in Queensland to ensure that health of mine and quarry workers is afforded the same priority as their safety. Thermal and metallurgical coal mining in Queensland has resulted in mines which contain voids due to open cut mining. While there are several proposals for greenfield coalmines or expansions to existing operations, many existing open cut coalmines are reaching maturity and most will leave one or more residual voids in place. The rehabilitation of mine voids is challenging. Water held in voids will evaporate over time leaving solutes to concentrate. This is likely to lead to poor water quality with limited practical use. The most basic practices to rehabilitate voids have historically involved stabilising the high and low walls, bunding to provide flood protection, and preventing public access. Regulatory reforms for mine rehabilitation were introduced in Queensland as part of the Mineral and Energy Resources (Financial Provisioning) Act 2018, and aimed to strengthen progressive rehabilitation planning, limit risks to the environment and improve outcomes for local and regional communities. Under the reforms, the goal for rehabilitation of voids is to achieve a safe, stable, and non-polluting landform, which can sustain a post-mining land use (PMLU). The reforms also introduced a requirement to describe rehabilitation of mined land in Progressive Rehabilitation and Closure (PRC) plans, replacing the description of such plans in Environmental Authorities (EAs). The reforms are not retrospective and recognise historic approvals for voids, meaning established voids will remain in the landscape as non-use management areas (NUMAs). The objectives of this study were to outline historic void rehabilitation planning practices, describe water quality limitations of Queensland mine voids and identify possible opportunities for improved planning
