This paper reviews recent advances in geophysical tools for mineral exploration. It does not restrict comments to methods which are usually applied in the tectonically active belt surrounding the Pacific Ocean, where geophysics has often been secondary to geological prospecting (eg visual recognition of surface alteration) and drainage geochemistry; but considers geophysical tools applied to a broader range of both deposits and terrains. For example, the subdued topography of much of Australia and Canada has lent itself to the development and extensive application of airborne methods. In Australia, deep weathering and transported cover have necessitated the use of geophysical methods to not only detect anomalies but also to map and understand basement geology. This same weathering has caused specific problems, particularly for electrical methods, but recent improvements in instrumentation, processing and visualisation have largely overcome them. A great deal of geophysical data is now being collected by government agencies, often from the air, and made readily available to explorers. In several Australian states it is free, often on line, and in almost all cases it is relatively cheap. These regional data sets are often augmented by more detailed local surveys in areas of interest. Although æanomaliesÆ are still important much more is being done with the high quality data which is now available The results are used for geological mapping, to test geological hypotheses, to construct detailed 3D geological models and, together with fluid flow modeling, to predict optimum locations for mineralisation.

Recent and on-going studies on the leaching of gold, the properties and activity of carbon, developments in the elution of gold from carbon, and methods of recovering gold from solution are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on Australian contributions, and their impact on gold metallurgy. Consideration is given to the future development of selective solvent extractants, ion exchange resins or alternative reagents for cyanide.

Several new techniques. which may be applied with advantage to the search for uranium are described. Scintillation type gamma spectrometers are now available for airborne', ground and borehole use. These can distinguish in a broad way between anomalies due to uranium, thorium and potassium. Gamma spectrometers based on semiconductor detectors now under development should be capable of much greater resolution. These should also make possible rapid, accurate and cheap radiometric analyses of samples containing uranium and/or thorium, whether in radioactive equilibrium or not. Another valuable prospecting aid, particularly in areas of tropical leaching, is systematic sampling of soil for radon content. Equip- ment for this purpose is currently available and it will be possible to extend the method when development of an alpha probe suitable for use in deeper holes is completed. Variations in the concentration of certain trace elements'in soil (e.g. mercury) also offer promise in the search for mineralized zones which may contain economic eon¦- centrations of uranium.

Sintering is the most economic and widely used agglomeration process to prepare iron ore fines for blast furnace use. Due to the depleting reserves of traditional high-grade iron ore, there have been considerable changes in iron ore resources available throughout the world, especially in steel mills in East Asia. Corresponding to the changes in the availability of iron ore resources, the amount of impurities in iron ore has been slowly increasing. Some of these impurities have been found to have deleterious impacts on sinter quality and sintering performance. In the meantime, an increasing number of large blast furnaces with inner volumes of more than 5000 m3 have been built that require more sinter and are often more demanding in terms of the quality requirements of the ferrous materials. Finally, sinter plants are facing increasing pressure due to more stringent regulations regarding their environmental impact. Geological concepts are employed routinely in porphyry copper exploration at the area selection, prospect appraisal and deposit definition stages. Regional, district-scale, deposit-scale and laboratory-based concepts can all play a role, with the resulting porphyry copper models providing templates for the integration of geochemical and geophysical responses and interpretations. Of the 19 concepts and parameters selected for brief discussion, those relating to subdivision of porphyry intrusions, understanding of diverse and commonly complex alteration-mineralisation patterns and lithocap characterisation are undoubtedly the most influential in exploration. Several of them are of particular importance because of their role in promoting grade development. Additional belt-, district- and deposit-scale features are currently little used but hold promise, whereas others have less practical value but help in underpinning the evolving porphyry copper genetic model.CITATION:Sillitoe, R H, 2015. The majority of surface tailings storage facilities continue to employ sub-aerial tailings slurry deposition. Surface TSFs are typically sized and operated in a way to minimise the initial capital cost of the facility, driven largely by the net present value approach to accounting. This generally leads to too small a storage, too fast a rate of rise of the tailings, and difficulties in managing supernatant water. In turn, this results in wet and soft tailings deposits of high moisture content and low density, and the need for frequent and costly tailings dam raises. Further, such tailings deposits often do not facilitate closure and rehabilitation of the facility. Globally, there are on average over two failures annually of such tailings dams, resulting in loss of life, damage to infrastructure and environmental impact downstream, and the loss of company shareholder value and reputation. Recent high profile tailings dam failures are threatening the mining industry’s financial and social licence to operate.Among the physical processes that tailings undergo on sub-aerial deposition are beaching, hydraulic sorting down the beach according to particle size and specific gravity, settling, consolidation, and desiccation on exposure to the sun and wind. Beaching and hydraulic sorting have proved difficult to test at laboratory scale and difficult to model, and are best assessed in the field. Settling, consolidation and desiccation may be assessed at laboratory scale, but to date there has been an absence of tests to form the basis for the design and management of tailings deposition, and ultimate closure and rehabilitation. The paper describes recent advances in tailings testing methods, including a purpose-built slurry consolidometer that tests the settling and consolidation of tailings from a slurry consistency, simulating increasing tailings depth to about 50 m; and a purpose-built instrumented column that tests the settling, self-weight consolidation and desiccation of a surface layer of tailings, also from a slurry consistency. Selected test results from these two apparatus are presented in the paper, together with brief descriptions of how they may be used to better design tailings slurry deposition. Owing to their complexity, many metallurgical processes are difficult to model fundamentally, and as a result more attention has been focused on the use of artificial intelligence techniques to simulate these processes. In this paper recent advances in the use of neural nets to model processes not amenable to conventional methods are discussed. These include the application of a new modelling methodology based on the use of neural nets for the dynamic simulation of metallurgical processes, the use of conventional techniques in conjunction with neural nets to simulate gravity separation circuits, as well as the detection of gross errors in variable measurements by means of a neural net representation of the relation between measurement and constraint residuals.

The control of phosphorus in steelmaking is one of the famous challenges of pyrometallurgy. It is well established that highly basic slags, the presence of FeO in the slag and lower temperatures (less than 1650°C) are favourable for phosphorous removal. The thermodynamics of this reaction have been extensively studied under laboratory conditions and the general trends confirmed through industrial trials. However, in general, phosphorus slag/metal distributions measured in industry are far from equilibrium and quite specific to the oxygen steelmaking technology being used. This variability was quantified by Urban, Weinberg and Cappel (2015), who found that the phosphorus partition ratio measured in plants varied with blowing practice, stirring intensity and even converter life. Some recent kinetic studies by Gu, Dogan and Coley (2017) have shown how the kinetics of these reactions vary with FeO content and dissolved sulfur at the droplet scale. A global kinetic model by Rout et al (2018) provides meaningful predictions of where dephosphorisation occurs in an industrial basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and some recent heat transfer modelling by Madhavan et al (2021, 2022) implies that temperature difference between droplets and slag has a role to play in explaining why equilibrium is not achieved. This paper will review the current state of knowledge and provide suggestions on predicting phosphorous removal for industrial operations and how greater removal could be achieved.

A project to develop the Zinclor electrowinning cell to industrial size is being conducted at Tecnicas Reunidas' Research and Development Centre with Spanish Ministry of Industry support. This project is the final development phase in zinc electrowinning from a chloride medium, the highest ZINCLOR technology development level prior to the industrial scale having already been reached. This paper covers the outcomes and conclusions corresponding to project Phases 1 and 2: Process Selection and Industrial Electrodes (1 m2) design and testing. The most important achievement reached is that there are presently available industrial cathodes and anodes for the Zinclor diaphragm cell giving an optimum response for zinc chloride electrowinning with unit power consumptions between 2.65 and 2.80 kWh/kg Zn, depending on the diaphragm type. Standard electrolysis conditions were: 65 g/L ZnC12, 3 g/L HCl, 160 g/L NaCl, 350 g/t Zn arabig gum as the addition agent, 36¦C, and 400 A/m2 current density. The selection of electrodes, diaphragms and organic additives for the industrial scale tests have been optimised. The complete electrowinning cell development, with electrodes having an active area of I m2, enables the evaluation of Zinclor Technology application for industrial processes.

A brief history of the development of pneumatic flotation cells from early in the 20th century to the present day and a comparison to conventional cells demonstrates the efficiency and simplicity of design and operation of the ænew generationÆ of pneumatic cells. Recent successful testwork on phosphate minerals in the USA and a variety of coal types in Australia confirm the utility and efficiency of the design. The key aspects of this technology are improved recovery and selectivity with lower capital expenditure and operating costs.

The ERA - Ranger Mine ore processing operation consists of a sulphuric acid leach followed by counter current decantation and solvent extraction circuits. The most expensive unit processing operation at Ranger is the sulphuric acid leach. In 1992 and 1993 changes were made to the operation of the leach circuit. These changes have reduced power and reagent consumption in leach by 30 per cent and 20 per cent respectively with minimal effect on extraction efficiency. The first change was to operate the leach circuits at higher pHs than previously attempted. In addition a cap was placed on the amount of acid added to the leach circuit. Secondly, an on-line pH measurement system was installed and has reduced the variation with time of the leach circuit pHs. Finally, the number of leach vessels used was reduced from ten to seven. This action was undertaken after an examination of the uranium profile and the residence time in the leach circuit from previous years. This paper examines the above changes and assesses their effectiveness on plant performance and costs.

Draglines have found wide application in strip mining coal seams down to 60m depth. A research Project funded through NERDDC has been underway during the past two years investigating the application of large draglines loading overburden into hoppers feeding into conveyor systems or off-highway trucks. This paper presents the preliminary results of these investigations and covers overburden characteristics, bucket spotting con- trol, bucket design, conceptual hopper systems, system application at representative mine sites, and broad process comparison. The studies have initiated new concepts in the extended use of draglines at deeper strip- ping depths. Alternate arrangements for dragline bucket rigging and bucket control aspects of dragline stripping operations offer productivity improvements. Extended use of existing draglines includes, draglines dumping into hoppers which feed large trucks or conveyors, trigger dump buckets rigging arrangements, and rear dump dragline buckets with integral grizzly bars. The paper details these suggestions, and points to specific areas where the most productive applied research is anticipated. Mine planning considerations detail the factors involved in selecting dragline bench heights in association with hopper operations.

Increasing attention is being focussed worldwide on the strategic environmental assessment of mining projects, including consideration of cumulative environmental effects. In New Zealand there is now an end in sight for inappropriate delays in resource consent approval of responsible mining projects. This paper investigates six case examples of recently consented mining and quarrying projects, whose applications were notified. It also explores the nature of delays that occurred, the factors that contributed to the delays, and whether the consent process delivered fair and effective public participation and desirable environmental outcomes.

During 1997 two different types of coal mine inertisation equipment were trialed in separate underground coal mines in Queensland.In April 1997 tests of the Polish developed GAG-3A inert gas generator were carried out at the Collinsville No 2 Coal Mine. These demonstrations indicated that the GAG-3A device was applicable in underground coal mines and that with respect to inertisation rate the device outperformed all other currently available techniques. The unit was assembled rapidly and operated safely during surface and underground trials and no mechanical problems were encountered with the device. The GAG-3A is not suitable for every fire scenario particularly if large volumes of fresh air are being drawn into the mine(where multiple units may be required), but with respect to the selection criteria developed by the Moura Implementation Process Task Group 5 criteria, the unit performed up to the specifications required.

The Research Centres Program initiated by the Federal Government and supported by the mining industry has had a major impact on geoscience research and education during the past five years. Eight major university based-Geoscience Research Centres are currently supported by the Government, including four Key Centres of Teaching and Research and a further four Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs). The Research Centres Program has led to a concentration of high quality research and teaching in areas of demand and strategic importance creating strong university - industry linkages and a source of well trained and motivated graduates. Over the last decade Australia's reputation as a leader in mineral exploration and ore deposit research has grown substantially, in part because of the development of the Research Centres Program, and to increased collaboration and interaction between research groups and exploration geoscientists across the industry. During a period when ore deposit research activity has been decreasing in other countries (eg USA, Canada, Japan and most European countries), equivalent research activities in Australia have been increasing, within a well co-ordinated national framework. The future challenge for universities and the mining industry will be to maintain the momentum of the successful research centres in order for the centres to become self-funding over a six- to nine-year period.

At Cominco's Zinc Refinery at Trail, British Columbia impurities are removed from zinc sulphate electrolyte by a two-stage purification process using zinc dust. Copper, cadmium and thallium are removed in the first stage whereas cobalt is removed in the second stage. Cobalt removal kinetics are affected by soluble antimony and copper additions to the electrolyte. This study was focused on the kinetics of cobalt removal by zinc powder cementation. Experimental variables included copper and antimony concentrations, pH and temperature. Common organic additives employed in zinc plants were studied to determine potential interactions with the cobalt removal process. Cementation products obtained from laboratory experiments and plant practice were studied using SEM. A number of significant results were obtained: 1. Copper and antimony ions were sustantially removed from solution during the early stages of the cementation reaction (within the first 15 minutes). Cobalt cementation kinetics are slow and follow a first order kinetic regime. 2. A drop in the cobalt removal rates can be correlated with a rise in the Eh of the slurry. 3. Ligninsulphonate, Percol 351 and animal glue at levels of 2 mg/L significantly impede cobalt cementation.

Technological changes in Portland cement manufacturing during past years have reflected changes in the economics and availability of various types of fuel such as coal, fuel oil and natural gas. The industry consumes a sig- nificant quantity of both thermal and electric- al energy. The nature of the process and its chemical constraints does however permit the use of comparatively low grade fuels such as high ash coal and high sulphur oil. In striving for increased daily kiln outputs and conservation of energy, there is a worldwide trend towards the use of dry process plants. Wet process kilns of about 2 500 tonnes per day assume massive component sizes which present difficulties in manufacture, and transport to plant sites. Large capacity dry process units in excess of 8 000 tonnes per day are now in operation using precalcination techniques in which part of the fuel is introduced in the static preheater section ahead of the kiln while the balance is added to the kiln in a conventional manner. This technique has virtually doubled the potential output of any given single kiln.

Faster and more efficient methods of producing and refining iron and steel are imposing severe conditions on the refractory materials used to contain these metals in the molten state. In order to provide refractory linings which will give the desired service life and maintain unit availability at an economical level, it is necessary to appreciate the aggressive environment in which the refractories operate and determine the reaction mechanisms by which the refractories are destroyed. Only by such studies can the most suitable refractory or refractory combination for a particular unit be selected. Examples of refractories selection and reaction mechanisms are discussed for blast furnaces, BOS vessels, AOD vessels, steel ladles, vacuum degassing units and continuous casting.
