Significant advances in regional geochemical exploration techniques have been made over the last 5 years in the search for gold deposits. This has occurred largely by the development of the bulk cyanide ex- tractable gold (BLEG) also known as the Bulk Cyanide Leach (BCL) tech- nique. The technique has been developed and designed for Australian conditions and has two main ad- vantages over the pan concentrate technique preferred by many ex- plorationalists, viz:,. 1. It is designed to collect ultra fine gold common to epithermal and other north Queensland types of gold deposits. 2. The large sample (approx.5 kg) allows very low detection levels, ranging between 0.1 and 0.05 ppb Au. The use of the BLEG technique in exploration has led to the discovery of the Wirralie gold deposit and numerous other epithermal gold prospects previously undetected by pan concentrate and minus 80 mesh (pathfinder elements) surveys in the Drummond Basin.

The two major massive sulphide deposits in the Silurian rocks of southern NSW, Captains Flat and Woodlawn, differ from classical Kuroko deposits in several ways, e.g. they lie on the flanks of felsic volcanic piles in volcano-sedimentary marine sequences, are relatively thin and large compared to individual Kuroko deposits, show prominent banding in lead-zinc ore, and contain arsenopyrite. Qualified stuctural and stratigraphic correlations of the various fault-bounded remnant Silurian sequences that host these deposits provide the basis for a new interpretation of the regional geological setting that also differs from that of the Kuroko deposits (Ohmoto, Tanimura, Date, Takahashi, 1983), and sheds further light on the distribution of volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits in the Silurian rocks of NSW.

The western Cordillera of North America, including more than 99% of Alaska, is made up of an agglomeration of litho-tectonic terranes, some of which have undergone large rotations and (or) translations. The larger terranes can be broadly grouped into a small number of composite terranes based on affinities in their lithology, structure, and tectonic evolution. The terranes reflect repeated episodes of marginal rifting as well as formation of marginal arcs, island arc chains, back-arc basins, and oceanic plateaus since late Proterozoic time. Accretion to the continental margin occurred mainly from Middle Triassic through Early Cretaceous time. Major northward dispersal of terranes was largely during the existence of the Kula plate from about 85-55 Ma. Major rotations are the mid-Cretaceous opening of the Arctic Ocean basin with counterclockwise rotation of Arctic Alaska and Laramide oroclinal bending of western Alaska. The present complex Cordilleran geology along the northeast Pacific rim is a sum of these earlier accretionary processes together with continued Cenozoic faulting and deformation that has been superimposed upon the agglomerated displaced terranes over a broad segment of the continental margin.

The present geology of the northwest quadrant of the Circum-Pacific is the product of the interact-ions between plates or paleo-plates which have oc-curred since the earliest part of the earth's hist-ory. Almost every possible geologic structures are observable there; stable continents, collision belts, and subduction arcs as well as extensional basins. This suggests that almost all the possible tectonic processes occurred through geologic time and the present overall structure of the Quadrant is no more than a time section of the long lasting tectonic history which the region experienced.

New Caledonia, Norfolk Island and northern- most New Zealand lie on a long, narrow, ridge system, the Norfolk Ridge System, which is sit- uated in the centre of a geologically complex region of ridges and basins between Pacific Basin oceanic crust and continental crust of Australia (see Eade, 1987).

An analytical technique is described to identify areas of structural disturbance to coal and interseam strata in coal measures. It is based on exploration borehole data which records seam intersections and interseam lithologies. Computerised data bases have been developed to allow processing of large quantities of borehole records. The case study discussed is located in a tectonic setting dominated by thrust faulting. It provides a mechanism for the identification of low angle and bedding plane faults. In addition it allows the preparation of plans showing the areal distribution of the thrust sheets in the statigraphic section throughout the mine prospect. The technique requires the identification of normal undisturbed depositional thickness of coal seams and interseams to be determined. This is done for coal by the identification of coal ply distribution over the area. For interseam lithologies it is based on sedimentological modelling of lithology distributions, related back to the original depositional environments. Variations from the expected values are interpreted as structural Deformations.

The history of the rail and mining industry in Queensland over the past century is inseparable. Indeed it was mining that led to the construction of the line west from Townsville and that shaped its current alignment. The discovery of gold at Charters Towers started construction of the Great Northern Railway west from Townsville in 1879, with completion to Charters Towers in 1882. The line was extended to Hughenden in 1887 and to Cloncurry in 1907 - driven by copper mines both to the south west and the north west of Cloncurry. The mining industryÆs association with funding the construction of rail lines to service their individual mines began in this area when the Hampden and Mount Elliot mine companies agreed to pay 50 per cent of the cost of the line from Cloncurry. The line to Selwyn was completed in 1910. Copper mining saw the construction of many other rail lines in the Cloncurry area in the 1910 - 20 period before copper prices slumped. Included in these lines were the Malbon to Duchess line and the line to Kajabbi and beyond.

The assistance that can be gained by the use of aerial photographs in the geological examination of a mineral field is clearly illustrated by the results of a rapid reconnaissance survey of the newly-discovered Mount Fitton talc, deposits, situated in the north-eastern extension of the Flinders Ranges in South Australia.The talc deposits were found to occur about the margins of a large lenticular mass of dolomitic marble, interbedded with hornfelsic tillites and fluvio-glacial sediments of Upper Pre-Cambrian age. Aerial photographs show clearly the extent of the dolomitic marble on which the growth of a species of eucalypt-Eucalyptus Gillei-is prominently developed, and which assists in defining the limits of this relatively light-coloured formation. (See Fig. 1).Upon field investigation it was found that the talc, deposits are related closely to the margin of the dolomitic marble where the latter has been subject to minor folding and faulting. The deposits themselves have been formed by metasomatic replacement of schistose dolomite. The contact of the dolomite with the underlying and overlying glacial beds is also noteworthy for the presence of minor occurrences of copper, silver, lead and zinc minerals.An examination of photographs covering a wide area reveals an outcrop of a massive granite to the north-east of the dolomitic marble, Fig. 2, which was almost certainly responsible for the regional metamorphism of the dolomitic and glacigene sediments, and the source of the mineralising solutions.All these features, as well as the broader structural features of the area, which are extremely important in the understanding of, individual commercial depQsits, were quickly determined with the assistance of the photographs.It is useful, briefly to relate the procedure adopted in examining this recently developed field as an example which may be well worth following on other fields, even if exposures are not so clearly defined. The method to be outlined, of course, will be of maximum advantage. Where rock exposures are good, where the ore bodies are likely to be widely spread, and where such bodies are related to some major geologi-cal control. Typical of such deposits are pegmatitic, hydrothermal and related ore bodies associated with the periphery of an igneous intrusion, or ore bodies related to particular sedimentary horizons in a regionally metamorphosed province.Procedure.The first requirement is the preparation of a detailed reconnaissance geological plan of as large segment as possible of the potentially mineralised province. The competition between various options for the use of land is ever increasing. Commonly in Australia large tracts of land were un-encumbered by sweeping land use option limitations, but this situation has been rapidly altering in recent decades as governments are obliged to maximise the utility of the land for a broad range of competing interests. While the interests of miners have always been considered, the effects on limiting access to land for exploration and possible mining have not always been effectively incorporated into decision-making processes. As a result the challenge for national and state organisations representing these interests has been to develop a transparent process to allow for the mineral potential of an area to be systematically assessed and for information to be presented for use by specialists and non-specialists. Government agencies are called upon to implement government policy but also to provide accurate and meaningful advice which can assist in policy and land use decisions. Commonly timeframes are short and information can be less than complete. Nevertheless on-going decisions are made based upon the best available understanding. It is in this operational framework that the methods described in this paper are set. The paper describes a process for quickly and systematically providing advice on mineral potential for use by government agencies and ultimately the community within tight time and resource constraints. It is a method of combining the accumulated knowledge about mineral resources and their potential and presenting this information in an easily accessible form which can be used in a negotiation and policy development environment. Development of the method was undertaken to meet the needs of the Regional Forestry Agreement process in Australia. The method has been applied to study areas in New South Wales, Tasmania, Western Australia and elsewhere. Examples in this paper are taken from north eastern New South Wales.

On the 1 June 1978, the Town and Country Planning Act 1953 was replaced by the revised and more comprehensive Town and Country Planning Act 1977. The new act brings in some substantial changes to the law affecting regional and district planning, and for the first time makes provision for maritime planning. The importance of the Town and Country Planning Act 1977 to the Mineral industry is primarily in the relationship between Regional Planning Schemes and District Schemes as the needs and resources identified in a Regional Planning Scheme will override the underlying District Schemes. The mineral extraction industry must be recognised as a regional responsibility which draws on the resources of a region to satisfy the demand of the communities within that region rather than a purely local operation within one District.

A survey has been undertaken of the petrography of North Island greywackes with a particular focus on the occurrence in them of smectite (swelling clay) and chlorite, two minerals that are closely associated, chemically similar, and commonly interlayered with each other. Smectite is the mineral which is a major cause of greywacke aggregatesÆ poor performance. Smectite occurs in post-metamorphic shear zones and in surface weathering profiles over greywackes. This study focuses on the petrography of fresh greywacke rocks.   The occurrence and abundance of smectite and chlorite and their relationship in greywackes is largely a function of the chemistry of the sediment and the maximum temperature that the sediment has been subjected to during diagenesis and/or very low grade (anchizone) metamorphism. Rock chemistry, particularly total iron and MgO, determines the smectite and/or chlorite content in fine-grained greywackes (argillites and siltstones) but chemistry is less influential in sandstones, where at low grades of metamorphism much of the Fe and Mg of the rock is held in unreacted detrital minerals and the mineral constituents of lithic grains.   Four zones which represent different levels of diagenesis and very low grade metamorphism, based on the crystallinity of illite and chlorite in the greywackes, and the proportion of smectite interlayered with chlorite, have been mapped in the North Island. In the anchizone smectite does not appear as a discrete mineral, it is always interlayered with chlorite. In the upper anchizone chlorite contains approximately ten per cent of smectite interlayered with chlorite. In the lower anchizone about 30 per cent smectite can occur in chlorite.   In addition to the smectite and chlorite inherent in the greywackes as the result of the thermal overprint, smectite as a discrete mineral and smectite-chlorite interlayered minerals with high levels of smectite, occur in abundance on shear zone surfaces and in alteration zones adjacent to shear zones; these are the main contributers to the high levels of smectite recorded in many greywacke aggregates.

Material characterisation, ore sequencing and process capability are commonly regarded as the key parameters to consider in designing and operating an effective pit to plant supply chain. Therefore, an understanding of rock mass properties is the starting point for controlling the presentation of problematic material to the ore handling plant and optimising process utilisation. There are different methodologies for characterising problematic material and ore handleability which exist across a spectrum of sophistication. At one end of this spectrum are simple indices built using first principles geology and at the other are complex algorithms developed using advanced analytical methods, machine learning and ore traceability. Regardless of the method, without an integrated process for careful management of problematic ore, material handling delays (ie blocked, bridged, blinded and buried events) will interrupt the stable flow of production. The ability of the ore control geologist to mitigate these delays is central to the ore handleability challenge. This paper describes a quick and easy solution that links the presentation of ore to the operating window at the crusher. This operating window is based on material characterisation, using the physical, textural and mechanical properties of the rock mass, and crusher performance. It also describes how a basic problematic ore index (POI) can be developed using ore tracking to the production face, petrographic studies of ore texture and mineralogy, and existing variables in the geological model. Finally, this paper will demonstrate that by coding the POI into the geological model for mine planning, together with performance monitoring through compliance to plan routines, material handling delays at the crusher can be reduced, unlocking significant resource value.

Stratigraphic correlations across the Mur- phy Tectonic Ridge are crucial to regional corr. elations between the Mount Isa and McArthur River areas. Recent work in the Westmoreland and surrounding areas has substantiated the earlier general correlations between the Mount Isa and McArthur River sequences. The Mount Isa and McArthur Groups, and their equivalents, remain prime prospecting targets for major lead-zinc deposits of the Mount Isa and R.Y.C. type. A prospective area for Redbank-type copper mineralization is suggested.

The history of soft and hard rock underground mining is blemished with regional instabilities of mine workings. Whilst the potential consequences of regional instability events are recognised to be high, there is a false perception that the probability of them occurring is very low. In fact, Australia has averaged more than one event per year for the past 20 years. At least five fatalities and over $100 million of losses have been associated with the events. As such, they are a core risk to underground mining and have a significant effect on the quadruple bottom line of business û safety, environment, community acceptance and economics. This paper explores the important roles that risk management has in reducing the probability and consequences of regional instabilities. It concludes that education and continuing professional development are essential elements for effectively managing the risk.

Stream sediment geochemical analyses from 140 mining company exploration surveys of the Coromandel, Northwest Nelson, Marlborough and Westland regions of New Zealand have been compiled from open file reports and entered on a database called REGCHEM (for Regional Exploration GeoCHEMistry). REGCHEM is supported by GEOEXPL, a custom-written computer software application which operates under the Microsoft Access relational database management system on a PC-type computer, The data are plotted as maps using the MapInfo geographic information system (GIS) package. Thresholds separating anomalous values from background values are determined using the PROBPLOT uni-variant statistical package, which enables the discrimination and modelling of several populations. Relevant REGCHEM data are being incorporated into a GIS for the Coromandel region as part of ongoing studies to develop mineral deposit and metallogenic models for the region, and to assess regional prospectivity.

Intrusion related Cu/Au mineralisation is localised in Pacific Rim island arcs by arc parallel, termed accretionary structures; or arc normal, termed transfer structures. In Papua New Guinea, NE trending transfer structures, evident on Landsat imagery, represent deep crustal fractures which have facilitated dextral rotation of the mainland during oblique plate collision. Major structures localise intrusion centres, and by rotation, develop ore hosting dilational environ-ments in subsidiary structures. While transfer structures localise the Porgera, Wafi and Yandera porphyry centres, the Frieda Porphyry and associated Nena high sulphidation Cu/Au mineralisation are localised by accretionary structures. The Bulolo Graben, which hosts the Morobe Goldfield, developed during intra arc rifting aided by movement on transfer structures. Crustal thinning has initiated magmatism with which diatreme breccias and fracture controlled mineralisation are associated.

The mining industry faces concurrent pressures of reducing water use, energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in coming years. However, the interactions between water and energy use, as well as GHG emissions have largely been neglected in modelling studies to date. In addition, investigations tend to focus on the unit operation scale, with little consideration of whole-of-site or regional scale effects.This paper presents an application of a hierarchical systems model (HSM) developed to represent water, energy and GHG emissions fluxes at scales ranging from the unit operation, to the site level, to the regional level. The model allows for the linkages between water use, energy use and GHG emissions to be examined in a flexible and intuitive way, so that mine sites can predict energy and emissions impacts of water use reduction schemes and vice versa. This paper examines whether this approach can also be applied to the regional scale with multiple mine sites.The model is used to conduct a case study of several coal mines in the Bowen Basin, Australia, to compare the utility of centralised and decentralised mine water treatment schemes. The case study takes into account geographical factors (such as water pumping distances and elevations), economic factors (such as capital and operating cost curves for desalination treatment plants) and regional factors (such as regionally varying climates and associated variance in mine water volumes and quality).The case study results indicate that treatment of saline mine water incurs a trade-off between water and energy use in all cases. However, significant cost differences between centralised and decentralised schemes can be observed in a simple economic analysis. Regolith, the blanket of bedrock weathering products and surficial sediments, covers almost all of the landsurface. In Australia extensive areas are covered by regolith up to several hundred metres thick which is relatively old (extending back to the Mesozoic or possibly earlier) and largely complex. As such, it is poorly understood and is presently regarded as a significant hindrance to resources exploration. The regolith: obscures bedrock lithology and structure blankets ore deposits in the bedrock hosts surficial mineral deposits ranging from placers (gold, diamonds, platinum, mineral sands ....) to chemical precipitates (uranium, opal, gold, bauxite....). contains important groundwater resources. The application of surface exploration techniques without recognition or understanding of the regolith could result in wasteful expenditure. The understanding of the distribution and characteristics of the regolith in the context of its evolution and geomorphic history and its relationship to underlying bedrock will promote development of suitable geological, geophysical, geochemical and remote sensing techniques. It also will assist exploration industry with the interpretion of data from: geological mapping soil geochemical surveys stream sediment geochemical surveys airborne remote sensing airborne radiometric surveys other airborne geophysical surveys some ground geophysical surveys shallow drilling and so improve mineral exploration Strategies.

"In 2010, two McLanahan RSS14×50 scrubber screens were installed at Fortescue Metals Group’s (Fortescue) Christmas Creek site. By 2015, the trommel (screen) section had effectively reached the end of their serviceable life. This was determined by regular measurement of structural components over the previous 18 months that tracked wear life. At the same time, numerous trials and optimisations had taken place on screen panel design and material composition. During 2015, a new set of trommels were designed, manufactured and installed that incorporated many new features: increased open area to facilitate high throughput, improved wear protection for structural members, simplified trommel panels and realigned discharge ports to reduce wear on exit. Numerous other upgrades have taken place on the drive system, feed chutes, liner and weir configurations and park brake, to name a few. This paper will highlight how regular measurement drove design changes and how the site and the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) managed a replacement program that has delivered improved performance.Citation:Wilson, R, Luke, S, Freeburn, B and Williams, R, 2016.
