Stope filling practice on the Great Boulder Mine was described in -a paper published in Aus.I.M.M., Proceedings No. 137, in 1945. When the paper was presented the process had emerged from the experimental stage, most of the initial operating difficulties had been overcome, and it had been established that this method of filling was suitable for the working of ore bodies in the Kalgoorlie field: Since 1945, it has fulfilled its early promise, -and during 1947, the tonnage of fill placed was sufficient to cover current operating requirements as called for by the mine ore breaking programme. The object of this paper is to outline current operations. In so doing it will refer' to some ground covered by the previous paper, but will omit details of the initial experimental work. It will include, however, a description of further experimental work on the use of hydraulic filling for worked-out shrinkage stopes, arid will provide more accurate data on costs than were available previously.ESTIMATE OF TONNAGE OF FILL REQUIRED.Early in 1946, the mine ore reserves were analysed in order to estimate the relative tonnages to be mined per four-weekly period by shrinkage stope methods -and by cut and fill stope methods respectively. In feasibility studies the choice of optimum cut-off grade is typically based on an evaluation of tonnage grade curves and manual design of stopes at one or two cut-off grades. In the industry these stope designs are usually based on break-even cut-off grades, but there is little consensus on what cost and price assumptions ought to be included. A new tool for automated stope design has been developed that generates sets of stope shapes for a nominated range of cut-off grades, or depending on the nature of the mineralisation, cut-off values based on net smelter return calculations in the block model. The stope design procedure includes constraints in stope and pillar geometry for the selected mining method and can be used to evaluate sublevel interval and sensitivities to other design parameters in the specific geological and geotechnical environment. These ænested stopesÆ are analogous to ænested pitsÆ in open cut design, and can be used as a key input in the æhill of valueÆ methodology for the evaluation of the optimum cut-off grade in underground design. The results of many consulting studies indicate that a break-even cut-off grade will not be the optimum cut-off grade. A particular benefit of the new stope design tool is that the design rules used to establish stope shapes in the feasibility study can then be used in mine production, in an optimal and repeatable method. This methodology is being advanced in the AMIRA P884 PRIMO project, which is a new research collaboration coordinated by AMIRA International. The project has brought together active research groups in Australia and Canada, with the goal of developing a flexible framework and set of software tools for optimisation in underground mine design.

The performance of 460 stope surfaces at WMC ResourcesÆ Olympic Dam Operation (ODO) has been used to investigate the confidence that can be placed in the Stability Graph Method for design of stope dimensions. A detailed database of stope performance and ground condition information was established for each stope. The database contains all the required stability graph information as well as other factors thought to influence stability, such as discrete major structures, poor shape and exposure time. The performance of each stope surface was quantified by calculating Equivalent Linear Overbreak/Slough (ELOS). The performance of stope walls and crowns was plotted on the supported and unsupported case history stability graphs. Based on this information an ODO design limit of HR = 3.3 x NÆ0.33 has been suggested for stope walls. Walls that plotted above this line were 80 per cent stable, 20 per cent unstable and zero per cent failed. Below the line 60 per cent were stable, 30 per cent unstable and ten per cent failed. Supported crowns that are flat or arched in shape and are not within the influence of major structures can be designed in the stability graphÆs æstable zoneÆ with a strong likelihood of stability. The Stability Graph Method did not reliably predict the performance of unsupported crowns at ODO.

Throughout the study phases (scoping, prefeasibility and feasibility) of new mining projects one is forced to work with and make predictions based upon limited date obtained from diamond and reverse circulation drill holes. These data are extrapolated to determine how much of the valuable metal is present in the ground, how it can be recovered it and the efficiency of this recovery. Mining methods to extract the ore are investigated with forecasts made regarding excavation stoping stability and performance in an attempt to optimise production. Extraction and use of rock mass data for use in characterising the mechanical behaviour of the rock mass is no exception. One often relies heavily upon the use of empirical charts developed over many years on hundreds of case histories based upon rock mass characterisation schemes. This is largely successful and indicative of what one might expect. However specific site characteristics can always play a significant role, and are not necessarily apparent in diamond drill core. Feasibility studies for the Favona orebodies indicated that the rock mass was generally poor to extremely poor, and that stoping conditions would be difficult in all of the orebodies for various reasons. A range stope performances were achieved ranging from very good to very poor and in some cases unexpected results were achieved. A comparison is made between what was actually achieved and what was expected since stoping commenced in 2007. Explanations are attempted for differences in stoping performance and, in some cases, unexpected results at the Favona underground mine are attempted.

The Big Gossan mine is operated by PT Freeport Indonesia and is one of the largest stope-and-fill mining systems in the world. The Big Gossan deposit is a ~200 m wide, 1200 m long and 500 m high steeply north-east-dipping to subvertical skarn body at the Cretaceous-Tertiary Ekmai-Waripi contact. The copper-gold mineralisation, with a 1.3 per cent copper equivalent cut-off grade, occurs mainly proximal to the Ekmai-Waripi contact in the garnet-clinopyroxene prograde skarn at the base of the Tertiary Waripi formation and partly distal to the contact in the tremolite-actinolite retrograde skarn of the Tertiary Waripi formation.The Big Gossan stope mine is designed from 2540 m to 3020 m above sea level. Present active stoping operations occur at level 2540 mL to level 2640 mL and are done in a primary and secondary stoping sequence. The width and length of the stopes is 15 m and 20 m respectively, while the height of the stope varies between 20 m and 40 m, depending on the ground conditions. The stability of the stopes is visualised in the Mathew’s Stope Stability graphs. These graphs and actual Cavity Measurement Scanner measurements on the stope will predict and show the overbreak and underbreak, which affect the reconciliation of the mined stope and also the pillar stability between the primary stopes. THE method of stope surveying as practised at the Mount Lyell Company's mines has been evolved out of the exigencies created by special conditions. It presents some novel features, and has proved effective for all requirements. All stope measurement work is brought under one complete system, to which office methods are standardized. Before proceeding to deal with the subject a brief description of the physical characteristics of the ore-bodies of each mine and the method of stoping will serve to show, cause ,for departure from ordinary survey practice.NORTH LYELL MINEThe ore-bodies of this mine occur on or near the conglomerate schist contact, and, being probably the result of replacements of both rocks, they rarely present any definite walls. It is usual for the payable material to merge into the respective countryrocks, and the limit of the occurrence is defined rather by assay value than by any distinct natural boundaries. The general configuration of these ore-bodies, therefore, is highly erratic both in horizontal and vertical section, so that, in order to obtain an accurate record of any occurrence, the measurement of the actual contour at short vertical intervals is essential.Stoping is carried out on a modification of the "rill." system, perhaps more properly described as "arched back" or "dome" stoping. Mullock rises are placed in as convenient positions as the erratic configuration of each ore-body will allow, and aroundthese rises the back is kept well arched, both longitudinally and transversely. Many open pit mines require dewatering or need aquifer depressurisation systems to manage mine water inflow and/or mine floor stability. In many instances these mining operations impact on regional groundwater resources and therefore access to these resources by other users.As such potential exists for mine development to be hindered or even blocked by groundwater legislation that aims to prevent declining groundwater levels and demonstrate equitable use of a regional groundwater resource.There is a need to manage aquifer systems during and after the mining operations, and in some cases stresses on the aquifers and associated ecosystems may be elastic and can be managed with minimum impacts or reversed once the mine ceases to operate.This paper uses the Gippsland sedimentary basin, with a history of declining groundwater levels and mining and petroleum production, as a case study to pose the question: Should period of mining operation, aquiferÆs storage capacity and its ability to recharge be concurrently considered when granting groundwater abstraction and mining licenses for prospective mine development?It further examines that by utilising an aquiferÆs storage capacity and demonstrating an understanding of aquifer system hydrodynamics during and beyond the life of the mine (time), the approval process for groundwater abstraction and associated cost of statutory monitoring may be made less onerous.

A metalliferous mine has operated at Storys Creek from the 1890s to 1979. Storys Creek drains from a pristine catchment and National Park and remains as the most degraded stream from historic mining in north-eastern Tasmania. It has been the subject of public concern since the closure, particularly at times of high rainfall such as existed in 1985 and 1986. The mine is located on the banks of the creek, which flows into a major river, the South Esk River, which is one of TasmaniaÆs largest rivers and important for recreational fishing and water supplies. For much of the life of the of the operations tailings were directly discharged into the creek, and in latter years stockpiled or very close to it. Little rehabilitation was carried out at mine closure. The result was erosion and subsequent deposition on the banks of the creek downstream. Direct emissions of adit water and the consequential emission of contaminated ground water to the creek continue to affect water quality. Contaminant loads discharging from the mine and tailings comprise 70% of the metal load in the catchment and are by far the largest single source. Acidity data suggested that the introduction of systems to introduce alkalinity could be effective in ameliorating the residual acid drainage impacts in the Storys Creek catchment. After a period of investigations and trials which proved their effectiveness, treatments adopted have included the following: relocation of tailings to a constructed and clay capped disposal area and rehabilitation of tailings area; crushed limestone addition to stream flows; crushed limestone addition to creek banks and exposed tailings; sealing of a drainage Adit; and construction of an anoxic drain to generate alkalinity to surface waters draining to old mine workings. These innovative treatments have resulted in a marked improvement in water quality draining from the area. The anoxic drain is believed to be one of the few, if any, which has been constructed to have generated high levels of alkalinity from clean waters and offers a solution to the clogging problems experienced in such drains in the past. Similarly, the use of crushed limestone in an active stream has proved effective in buffering acid drainage and removing metals from solution.

In the course of the last ten years the development of the mining industry in the Czech Republic has been influenced by the pushing through of economic and ecological criteria. Due to this coal mining was ended in the whole series of the underground coal mines. These mines become the source of ecological and safety risks û methane leakage, surface deformation, etc. The way of solving of these problems is by stowing of underground spaces, and also surface fault basins with the help of mixtures produced from industrial wastes. The presupposition of this procedure is knowledge of prescriptions for production of the mixtures, and of the economic advantageousness of carrying out these activities. This contribution pays attention to the utilisation of power-gypsum as a raw material in the production of mining-construction materials.

The East West Link road tunnels are proposed to provide a connection between the CityLink toll road and the Eastern Freeway north of the Melbourne CBD. The alignment passes from Moonee Ponds valley beneath the Upfield Line railway cutting, Royal Park, the historic Melbourne Cemetery and beneath Alexander Parade rising to an eastern portal at Hoddle Street. The western (Royal Park) part of the alignment passes through the folded and faulted Silurian Melbourne Formation, which has been subjected to deep weathering since the Triassic.The Melbourne Formation in the Royal Park area is mainly characterised by interbedded sequences of siltstone and fine-grained sandstone. The beds are often graded and a clear boundary between the siltstone and fine-grained sandstone rock can be difficult to distinguish. Variation in lithology and the presence of structural geological features such as folds and faults have resulted in an irregular weathering profile within the Silurian rock; nonetheless the formation typically becomes less weathered with depth.Due to difficulties in obtaining reliable laboratory strength and stiffness relationships with weathering grade, in situ testing methods such as downhole shear wave velocity and high-quality pressuremeter testing are a useful aid to assessing appropriate geotechnical parameters for design.This paper presents an analysis of the variation in shear modulus of the Melbourne Formation, determined at small-strain (from downhole seismic data) and at ‘engineering scale’ strain (from pressuremeter tests) for extremely weathered (XW), highly weathered (HW) and moderately weathered (MW) rock. Estimates of small strain shear modulus (Go) obtained a range between 400 to 3400 MPa for these weathering grades. By comparison against the pressuremeter test data, reduction factors to be applied to these Go values to estimate shear moduli at engineering strain levels typically range between 0.10 and 0.35.The downhole geophysics undertaken in the Royal Park boreholes also suggests that there is an inversion in velocity between approximately 15 and 27?m depth below the top of the formation. This is thought to be related to the effects deep Plio-Pleistocene weathering, iron cementation of joints and increasing frequency of ‘non-healed’ joints in the transition from MW to slightly weathered (SW) rock.CITATION:Macklin, S, Schult, M, Terzic, Z and Chu, D, 2014. The major strata control considerations which affect the optimisation of roadway driveage in highly stressed strata is the performance of reinforcement placed and the extent of stress induced rock deformation. High development rates and opening stability requires efficient rock reinforcement and stress relief strategies which maximise the integrity of the rock about roadways created. Current studies demonstrate the capability to reduce lateral stress distributions across panels and research is aimed toward a higher capacity bolting system. It is the intention to provide industry with more efficient reinforcement and stress control alternatives which will allow high production development equipment to operate without the restriction of delays caused by poor ground Conditions.

Pillar extraction carried out using various methods (split and lift, Wongawilli and Old Ben) involves the formation of narrow fenders (commonly 7 m of coal) formed by driving "splits" for lifting off with a continuous miner. The strata above a split and fender adjacent to the goaf consists of a cantilever beam (usually >3 m thick) that extends from the solid coal and bridges across the fender. Lifting off the fender from the split in safe conditions depends upon the bridging capability of the cantilever and the fender strength. The nature and competence of the immediate and near roof, the support capability of the coal fender and the presence of faults and or joints can adversely affect the bridging behaviour of the cantilever. Insufficient knowledge of these parameters can lead to extraction under dangerous conditions. Remnants of fenders ("stooks") also support the cantilever and their dimensions are critical to obtain regular caving and goaf falls. Stook area, goaf roof span and roof stand-up time after lifting can be related and only a relatively small increase in stook area of 10-15 m2 can lead to a significantly increased stand-up time, especially under a massive roof. Such conditions strongly influence the re- distribution of abutment stresses and can create increased outbye pillar loading. Based on detailed underground geotechnical investigations, it is concluded that strata caveability, roof cantilever behaviour, fender H:W ratio and remnant stook size are all critical parameters for successful and safe pillar extraction.

A multi-wire borehole instrumentation system was used to monitor strata movement caused by a retreating longwall face at the Ellalong Colliery, situated in the Lower Hunter Valley in New South Wales, Mechanical anchors were placed at various horizons in the borehole which extended from the surface to the extracted coal seam. The vertical movement of the anchors was monitored during mining. The zone of major disturbance was confined to 13 times the extracted seam thickness above the seam. The average dilation of strata in this zone was 6 per cent. Above the caving zone, the tensile strain was under 2mn/m except at one location, where it was `xmi/m. The subsidence trough under dynamic conditions was flatter than that under stationary conditions. The subsidence also depended upon the extent of strata fragmentation prior to undermining.

An investigation into the mechanics of sub-surface deformation caused by caving of the extracted area behind retreating longwall faces has been completed by the Subsidence Engineering Section of the New South Wales (NSW) Department of Minerals and Energy. Changes in strata bulk permeability were also measured by standard packer tests undertaken before and after mining. The strata movement was measured by a multi-wire borehole instrumentation system consisting of mechanical anchors installed at different horizons in a borehole extending from the surface to the coal seam. The mechanical anchors were collected to suspended weights on the surface by stainless steel multi-strand wires. The movement of these weights was monitored as the longwall face approached and retreated past the borehole. The anchors did not move significantly until the face went past the borehole. For subcritical extraction geometry with the extraction width to mining depth ratio of 124, the caving zone extended to roughly 9 times the extracted seam thickness above the seam roof. Tensile strains within the overburden tended to be much more closely related to stratigraphy than to the proximity to the extracted seam roof. Larger tensile strains were associated with layers of sandstone, siltstone and conglomerate, whereas layers of mudstones, claystones and coal underwent much smaller strains indicating subsidence in blocks. A beller correlation was observed between pre-mining Rock Quality Designation and permeability than between rock type and permeability. This correlation was less evident in the post-mining core logs. There was an overall increase in bulk permeability after mining.

Design and selection of support systems for longwall faces call for in-depth know- ledge of strata mechanics and in particular of strata-support interactions. The paper presents the results of field investigations and analysis of a difficult-to-cave roof using powered supports under a massive dolerite sill in Central India using a state- of-the-art datalogger system. The mechanised long wall face was equipped with 4/680 tons chockshields operated on the IFS mode using a 300 KW DERD shearer. The datalogger system was capable of storing data simulta- neously in 32 channels. The paper describes the monitoring system and the monitoring programme. The system provided useful information on support behaviour, build- up of leg pressures and face convergence during an intense dynamic periodic weighting phenomenon which destroyed the integrity of almost half of the face supports. At this point, the face had advanced by about 197 metres from the barrier. The paper outlines a post-mortem analysis of this dynamic event and provides a critical evaluation of the data collected for understanding strata support interaction and the behaviour of the massive sill in the overburden.

"Geometallurgy is now recognised within the mining industry as an approach that can both maximise value and reduce the risks associated with resource development. The process of spatial ore variability testing for metallurgical response and the use of quick, inexpensive metallurgical proxies has been well developed in the past decade in industry and the literature, and via various collaborative research programs and laboratories. Technology continues to advance with new techniques such as hand-held analytical tools and automated hyperspectral core scanning, allowing for even faster, less expensive in situ geometallurgical testing.In the current mining industry downturn, a critical frontier of geometallurgy is in its application in short-term geological modelling (ore control) and mine planning, and the associated decision-making. This is the end game at which the hard-won knowledge of orebody variability can be exploited to add near-term value. In order for spatial block models to be fit-for-purpose for such tactical uses, they must be populated with key geometallurgical information and then have workflows that use this richer model as a basis of material allocation to destinations so that the true value of the resource is realised.We envision geometallurgy (geomet) programs designed to add and sustain value at two levels:‘Strategic geomet’ has a long-term strategic focus that actively uses all relevant data that helps predict processing performance such as bench-scale metallurgical tests, mineralogy, geochemistry, ore texture etc (‘the geometallurgical database’) to model spatial ore variability and metallurgical response throughout the life-of-mine (LOM). This will enable better resource definition, more optimal mine planning and scheduling, improved process design and sustaining capital strategy over the LOM. The value-realisation is gained by basing all these strategic decisions on spatial models that better reflect the actual value of blocks (or aggregates of blocks) in the model.‘Tactical geomet’ has a short- to medium-term tactical focus that, again, actively uses the geometallurgical database, but also includes new data derived during ore control activities (such as drilling and sampling) to inform allocation-to-destination decisions via the ore control process. This will enable improved efficiency (ie less error) in allocation of mining blocks as direct feed, stockpile or waste. Importantly, this efficiency will be measured in terms of value and not grade, which is an incomplete – and typically biased – proxy for value. The key benefit is that ore control will then be planned and executed on the basis of realised value.We therefore propose a twofold systematic and holistic, value-based geometallurgical process. This process needs to be planned and implemented in an integrated manner, noting that strategic and tactical geometallurgy can be worked on by the same professionals, sharing data, methodologies and potentially models. In large companies with mining operations spread over multiple sites, it is essential that consistency between sites is maintained in preparing and classifying resource and reserve estimates. The endorsement by The AusLMM and AMIC of the "Australasian Code for Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves" and the subsequent incorporation of reference to the code into the ASX listing rules for mining companies has provided a basis for the consistent classification of resources and reserves. However, compliance with other criteria more or less stringent than the Australasian Code can present some reporting difficulties. Examples include listing requirements for foreign stock exchanges, particular Acts of Parliament that may apply to individual leases, constraints imposed by individual companies on their own leases, and ultimately, reserves for short, medium and long term planning. Confusion can arise when any two or more sets of reserves for the same lease are compared.. To alleviate this confusion, a standardised procedure was developed for the calculation and classification of coal resources and reserves. The procedure which is geostatistically based incorporates a technique called "Irregular Block Kriging" where specific mining blocks are directly kriged. The procedure has enabled those engineers and geologists with only a basic understanding of geostatistics to apply the technique and not feel hampered by some of the complex mathematics which in the past has tended to inhibit and overcomplicate the use of geostatistics. The procedure has resulted in "cleaner" data bases and hence more reliable reserve estimates.

"'Optimisation' has become a catchcry among many mining companies looking to tell the market how mining businesses will be improved and shareholder value increased. Consequently, the term 'optimisation' has been adopted by many service providers as they look to assist mining companies in achieving their objectives. But the explosion of services and products being offered with the label 'optimisation' has created some confusion. Mining companies ask for help in 'optimising' and service providers offer their assistance because they have a product that has the word 'optimisation' in its title. This is of course an over-simplification, but not by much! The authors' discussions in recent years with both mining companies and service providers have uncovered a number of very different definitions of optimisation.This paper provides a framework for identifying the scope and approach of different mining optimisation products and services, particularly the distinction between optimisation of components of the operation and the business as a whole. The different types of business optimisation are discussed, highlighting the failings of the mining industry's typical approach of strategy selection (as opposed to strategy optimisation). Mining business optimisation is discussed as a wicked problem, with the implication of this on how strategy optimisation models should be used and what the objectives of a business optimisation study should be.Case studies are also included to illustrate how fully flexible strategy optimisation models have been applied to assist decision-makers understand the impacts of changes in one part of the operation on the whole mining and treatment process, from geological models to the sale of product to customers.CITATION:Kahler, D B and Hall, B E, 2016. The originally estimated mine life at Kidston (starting 1984) was 12 years. Through a continuing process of re-evaluation and improvement in the operation and by expanding the geological knowledge in the region, the mine life has been considerably extended. With falling grades and harder ore, the additional reserves have come with increasing risk - not only in an economic sense associated with diminishing profit margins but also operationally, requiring innovative milling technology and geotechnical designs to provide a lower cost environment for continued profitable mine production.

To secure a sustainable competitive advantage some smelters may need strategies based on flexibility in feed and product ranges depending on immediate future projections of profitability. This paper explores the technical requirements for strategic diversity in smelting, leaving procurement, marketing and contractual considerations aside. The days when a smelting operation is tied specifically to say only processing zinc concentrates are perhaps drawing to a close. While internationally traded mineral concentrates are available, attractive business opportunities must exist for fully diversified custom smelters. Certain new and emerging technologies have inherent characteristics that are evaluated in this context. The paper identifies the basic building blocks that will permit such a scenario and assesses the technical feasibility.
