To enable ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) to be used on an equal weight basis with nitroglycerine explosives, smaller diameter bore holes became necessary with consequent modifications to drill steel and burden on holes. Detonation of AN-FO in small diameter holes proved successful both with and without primer charges but some alterations were required to adapt anoloders to the smaller holes.Important factors in training all operators in the new charging method were the retention of improved fragmentation, avoidance of excessive overbreak and keeping wall rock dilution to an absolute minimum. The successful storage of ammonium nitrate in climatic conditions with daily temperature fluctuations above and below the critical 90°F has been achieved.INTRODUCTIONTechnical aspects of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-Fa) blasting agent are well covered in recent literature. A number of suggestions have been made to improve the design of cells used for electro winning and electro refining of metals. Most of these designs have been aimed at increasing the current density used in order to improve cell capacity, although the purpose of some has been to produce electro deposited metals in a continuous manner. Polarization phenomena associated with the use of an agitated bed of particles as an electrode for metal deposition were studied. The concentration polarization at this type of electrode is much smaller than that occurring at a fixed or moving electrode surface. The paper discusses the use of animated dynamic numerical simulations to support design and operational decisions in the mining industry. The basis of the simulations discussed is a queuing theory engine with added features that enable continuous processes to be included in simulations. This approach is well suited to the needs of the mining industry which has a mixture of discrete events interfaced to a variety of continuous processes via various forms of surge capacity. Examples are given of the benefits of animation in communicating concepts to those with limited domain knowledge and simulation as a tool that facilitates the sharing of understanding between the stake holders of a system. The analytical content of the paper addresses conflict for resources within systems, the constraints imposed by human and other types of resources, and the impact of external events. Examples are presented showing the use loop diagrams and Gantt charts in the recognition conflict, and its causes. and the use of utilisation logs to identify opportunities for cost reduction.

The selective recovery of gold and silver from solutions containing other metals, such as copper, is possible using AuRIX«100 resin in conjunction with the Gekko Resin Column. Selectivity is driven by controlling the solution pH, which enables activities such as loading copper, gold and silver and then selectively stripping copper before gold and silver. Alternatively gold and silver can be loaded and the copper left in solution. The selective loading of gold while reducing the silver loading has also been demonstrated, opening the possibility of producing high grade gold dorT from high grade silver pregnant leach solutions. This paper reviews the AuRIX«100 resin and Gekko Resin Column Technologies, discusses the uses of AuRIX«100 in the recovery of gold and silver and the chemistry relating to several projects for which AuRIX«100 is being tested.

Research and development into alternate gold and precious metals adsorbents has resulted in the development of a new technology named the AUROSAVE adsorption process (ARGOSAVE'" for high silver con- tent ores). Adsorbents called VITROKELE'" can be tailored for either Gold I (cyanide leach) or Gold III (halide leach) applications. VITROKELE consists of a chemically synthetic adsorbent carried on an inert substrate, often a polystyrene bead. It is suitable for both in- pulp and in-solution use. VITROKELE adsorbent offers certain advan- tages over both carbon and ion exchange resin adsorbents. This paper describes testwork on Australian ores and commercial solu- tions obtained from operating Australian plants demonstrating the kinetic loading characteristics, elution methods and other operating parameters of VITROKELE adsorbent in the cyanide system. Brief reference is made to VITROKELE in the Gold III system.

Past and present developments in the use of blast furnace slag in the manufacture of glass are outlined. The crude slag from Port Kembla is beneficiated by the Mineral Resources Division of Australian Consolidated Industries Ltd. at Mascot using a dry magnetic separation process which reduces the iron level in the slag to an acceptable value, The chemical and physical properties of both the crude and beneficiated slag are given and compared with those of other slags used in the manufacture of glass. Slag is added to intro- duce alumina into the glass and its addition to the glass batch also results in faster melting and refining. Slag was first used in Australia in 1968 and its use has increased steadily year by year. At present about 16 000 tonnes of slag are used per year, mainly in amber and white glass. Beneficiated slag is used'in three plants to supply all the alumina required in the amber glass and in four plants to supply part of the alumina required in the white glass, the amount added depending on the acceptable iron level in the glass. Slag is also used in limited quantities in the manufacture of both dark and light green glass.

Blasting represents one of the most relevant unit operations in the process of mineral extraction. The final objective of this operation is that of obtaining an adequate final fragment size distribution such that the combined costs of drilling, blasting, excavation and transport, and crushing/grinding, are minimised, while at the same time producing the minimum possible level of damage to the surrounding rock mass. The strong influence that drilling and blasting has over the subsequent processes involved in the operational cycle makes it imminently desirable to have access to experience and technology which make possible the evaluation and optimisation of this unit operation. The correct use of vibration monitoring techniques offers a number of benefits in terms of their ability to examine any blasting process in detail. In effect, the measurement of particle velocity levels that result from the detonation of each explosive charge offers a means by which it is possible to measure relative efficiency of each charge, interactions (productive and counterproductive) between adjacent charges, and a definitive indication of general performance of any given blast design and its implementation. In this way the monitoring of blast vibrations in rock due to the blast event, can be used as a diagnostic tool, given that the correct interpretation of the vibration traces allows the determination of the level of interaction between the design and operational variables of the blast event. This makes it possible to evaluate, for example, the presence of out of sequence detonations, statistical scatter in the detonation times of pyrotechnic delay detonators, deficient detonation of charges, instantaneous detonation of charges and sympathetic detonation of charges, as well as the general of vibration levels in terms of peak particle velocity, acceleration, and displacement. Another important use of such data is in the construction of a database relating vibration levels to charge weight, hole diameter, and distance, for any given rock type, enables the calibration of predictive vibration models which in turn make it possible to predict the damaging effects of blasting. Knowledge of both the vibration levels induced, combined with quantitative measures of the geomechanical competence of a rock mass make it possible to estimate the probability of producing blast induced damage. The high levels of vibration generated by some blast events may damage the rock mass, producing new fractures or extending and dilating existing fractures. The vibration in this context may be considered as a dynamic stress provoking strain in the rock mass. This paper describes the application of the vibration monitoring technique, particularly in the underground mining environment, and its importance in diagnosis, modelling, control, and optimisation of the development blasting process. The potential of the technique is assessed in the context of achieving substantial techno-economic improvements development blasting results, increasing output whilst minimising the operational costs of the mining process.

In coal mining each of the unit operations are interrelated with each preceding operation having an effect on subsequent operations. This presents difficulties for determining when the lowest overall costs for a particular mining system are achieved. Drilling and blasting is the first mining operation for production and is known to have an effect on the subsequent loading, hauling and crushing operations. Computer blasting models developed over the past 15 years can be used to describe the drilling and blasting operation. This paper describes the ICI Blasting Model "SABREX" in detail. Methods of using the model are discussed. This involves field measurements of geological structure, shallow refraction seismic surveys, laboratory measurements of rock properties and high speed photography of blasts. The predictions are compared with actual blast results for fragmentation sizing and muckpile profiles. Outputs from the model are described and these can be used for input to models of subsequent operations.

After the minim operation, most raw materials that occur in the earth's crust require some form of processing or refining before they can be converted into a final end product. In the mineral industry these remarks apply to materials such as iron ore, bauxite, limestone, copper ore and many others that are found in Australia in large quantities. Processing plants for these raw materials operate more efficiently, however, if the feed to them is consistent in both physical and chemical characteristics. Such uniformity rarely occurs in nature so that some form of homogenisation, or blending, is required ahead of the processing plant. Bending also assists the mining operation itself by reducing; the need for selective mining and, by combining high and low grade materials, a more uniformly graded, commercially acceptable product can be obtained, thereby increasing the commercial life of a mine or quarry. Bed blending is the most efficient of the processes available, and following its development in the United States in 1905, over 100 plants have been installed, or are under construction, all over the world. The original process, the Robins--Nessiter system, has been the subject of continued improvements and refinements, so that economical capacities are possible from less than 100 l.t.p.h. up to 10,000 l.t.p,h. and beyond.

"*This is an abstract only*Construction of geological models for kimberlites has historically largely been based on visual volcanic textures and features, with chemical data only collected on an ad-hoc basis depending on the level of perceived complexity observed in the geological data. The focus of this paper is a high-level view of the impact an initial absence (or lack) of relevant chemical data had on two kimberlite resource models as well as how the magnitude of the problem increased once the resource estimation process commenced (Stiefenhofer, 2013). The impact of ignoring chemical data on a project assessment where micro-diamond estimation techniques are employed, is also discussed. Resource estimates based on micro-diamond data are critically dependent on the use of the correct geological model since stationarity of the size frequency distribution is key to the generation of correct grade estimates. This abstract discusses a heap leach copper mine that was failing to perform and as a result was not meeting targeted production. The mine had numerous technical challenges including: high water inflows, low levels of geotechnical monitoring, performance issues with mining, resource model and grade control reconciliation issues, and unexplained low levels of performance from the heap leaching operations. A team from various organisations with specialist skill sets including: a forensic accountant, the owner’s representative and a mining engineer, was arranged to visit the site. The task was to investigate the situation and determine what could be done to turn the performance of the mine around. After an initial assessment in late 2018, efforts were directed to better understanding the operations and improving the performance of the site through preventative management. A key part included the creation of production forecasts that could be achieved that would help restore confidence in the operations. Uncertainty in the mine achieving production forecasts and the performance of the heap leaching operations were contributing to the decline of the operations. Investigations uncovered the fact that while the resource model could reliably predict total copper, a lack of sequential leach data meant the accurate prediction of soluble and insoluble copper species, both important for heap leaching, was difficult to do with any degree of certainty. The crushing and mining contractors also appeared to have suffered somewhat from a lack of management by the owner’s team and performance had affected the production of copper. Collaboration and management were used by the team to understand and stabilise the operations. Ongoing collaborative efforts by the management team, site personnel and contractors resulted in a positive outcome for the owners and their mine – and could at yours.

The relationship between comminution testwork results and the milling circuit that is subsequently selected is not a direct one and frequently involves recourse to databases of past test results. This in itself reflects the lack of a systematic engineering approach in the design process. This paper reviews comminution tests for SAG mill design in an attempt to identify where the essential information comes from that will be used in mill selection. The conclusion is that results from traditional test methods, including obscure and little used procedures like the Mokken test, are more valuable from an engineering perspective than parameters for breakage rate based modelling. Suggestions are made on ways in which existing test procedures can be enhanced in order to generate parameters that can be directly related to characteristics of the milling circuit being designed.

Business intelligence (BI) and business analytics (BA) are established IT technologies that are used extensively in the business environment. This paper discusses the use of these technologies in production environments and beneficiation plants.Assmang’s Khumani mine is an iron ore operation located in the Northern Cape, South Africa. Assmang Limited is jointly owned by African Rainbow Minerals Limited and Assore Limited. This paper presents a case study of a BI solution applied to this plant, which is used by metallurgists, supervisors and all levels of operations and management to extract and analyse data to control and optimise the operation of the plant.The main advantage of adopting an established BI solution is the ease with which production personnel can extract and analyse data. The data is easily presented in familiar spreadsheets and no IT staff or specific training is required to achieve this.The solution adopted at Khumani mine uses a data mart with a multidimensional model (called an online analytical processing (OLAP) cube) acting as the main repository and source of data. The OLAP cube simplifies the access and analysis of plant data.The OLAP cube stores data in a specifically-designed way, which allows extraction and analysis to be performed quickly. It is designed to hold large amounts of data on a long-term basis, which could be for the life of the plant. It also performs automatic aggregations over many dimensions on a background process.A major benefit in adopting such a BI solution is that it allows common BA methods to be applied. This is due to both the efficient long-term storage of data and the availability of standard BA tools. BA tools are now able to perform data mining, predictive analytics, forecasting and other machine-learning algorithms. The use of comparative sampling methods during the evaluation of the tin-copper deposits at Cleveland mine yielded closely checking average results from groove, channel, AXT split diamond drill core, and bulk sampling for both tin and copper content of the ore.The weighted mean tin and copper grades and values for the groove, channel, and split core samples showed small percentage differences from bulk sample results, and the F-ratio test for single population origin of the four types of samples was accepted at the 99· 5 per cent level of confidence.These results indicate that grade estimates based on the assays from AXT split diamond drill core and/or groove samples would be reliable within practical limits.

The aim of these analyses was to utilise the latest available production information for the Wandoo operation to determine the optimal blasting parameters, costing information and predicted results (fragmentation, muckpile shape and vibration). Much of the data used as input was made available from the information gathered during the excavation of the test pits during 1995. As with any æplanning stageÆ analyses, many assumptions were required to fill gaps in the available data. The calibration of computer blasting models was conducted using data from the last of the test pit blasts (this blast was carried out in material that closely resembled rock expected to constitute the bulk of the base case design pit). This calibration was refined using observation and experience based judgements to extend the accuracy of the predictions as far as possible. All the simulations were performed assuming that the blastholes will be wet (as instructed by BGM). This has consequently determined that the appropriate explosive for the simulations and the actual blasting will be a pumped emulsion/ANFO blend. The following blast design parameters were derived by determining a likely range of powder factor (from other similar scale gold mines) with a median value of 0.62 kg/m 3 being the powder factor arrived at through the field optimisation process conducted during the test pit excavation. The total swell/displacement percentage (volume after blast/volume before blast) largely determines the diggability of a well fragmented muckpile. Consequently where fragmentation is good any reduction of total swell will probably reduce diggabilty. Any reduction of diggability can and should be traded off against increased gold recovery. In most gold mines, diggabilty will be substantially compromised at the balance which produces the most profit. When these considerations are combined with the cost to drill and blast material, processing costs and the achievement of æacceptableÆ diggibility, the analysis becomes extremely complex and qualitative. Many trends are evident including:the relationship between powder factor (for each blast design) and maximum forward displacement (throw), see Figure 1; and the relationship between powder factor (for each blast design) and drill and blast cost per BCM, see Figure 2. The following blast designs are matched to each of three ore-tonnage alternatives (as supplied by BGM) (Table 1). They are all based on powder factor of 0.62 kg/BCM and are considered optimum from a mining æpoint of viewÆ. The costing of each design includes drilling, explosives and labour cost to load, stem and tie-in holes. Using the available rock data and relying heavily on the wall exposures in the test pit(s), it is the opinion of the author that between 20 per cent to 40 per cent of the final walls excavated in the Wandoo pit would be likely to have the angle between the dominant foliation and the wall plane that is well suited to presplitting and be cost-effectively served by presplit technique. The drilling cost for 125 mm blasthole is about $11.40 per drilled metre and the cost of 40 mm presplit explosive is about $140 per 25 kg (17 metre) case. This implies that the cost to drill and blast presplit on the above parameters would be about $10.90 per square metre of presplit face. The remaining wall area would be most cost-effectively delineated using modified production blasting techniques. This requires the use of modified parameters such as smaller hole diameters, smaller spacing/ burden, higher powder factor, free face firing, less rows per blast and longer delays. These altered blast parameters would usually be applied uniformly across the entire blast fired adjacent to the wall and this ætrimÆ blast would relieve burden away from the wall, into the pit. In simplest terms, this method relies upon maximised burden relief to minimise blast energy applied to the wall. It is only applicable where the material to be blasted is waste since the throw achieved is inconsistent with ore dilution control. The largest charge weight per hole for these analyses is 360 kg and the nearest domestic structure to the proposed Wandoo pit is about 6100 metres distant. From these parameters and assuming a worst case example of rock controlled site factor, the predicted ground vibration is 0.5 mm/sec that is about five per cent of the lower limit set down in AS 2187 part two (1993). This suggests that for the current location of neighbours, ground vibration will not be an issue for the Wandoo operation.

This paper aims to provide the reader with an insight into the field of computer graphics and Virtual Reality (VR), and show how both have been applied to the general area of Free Steered Vehicle (FSV) operations underground. It first explains this developing computer technology and explains its advantages over existing CAD based solutions. This paper deals with the graphical applications and implications of building models within a computer's memory. It then continues to describe the problems with Free Steered Vehicle operations. The work already carried out in the field of VR is explained, and the production of a VR system addressing the problems with fitting cameras to aid the driver's field of view is detailed. Another possible use of VR is also explained - the concept of risk regions, demonstrating its uses in the examination of proposed operational methods. Examples of possible uses are given, and its potential advantages over existing methods discussed. A case study of a computer-generated video involved with the safety of operations of FSVs is also presented. This addresses the precautions that pedestrians should take to ensure safe working in areas where FSVs are operating. This paper then concludes with possible further applications for computer graphics and VR, and the on-going research into these two technologies.
