The mining industry needs to recruit young talented people. An important task therefore, is to create future attractive mining workplaces that engage and motivate young people to work within the industry. Our intention with this article is to illustrate a possible way forward for the mining industry to form such workplaces. We discuss different aspects of an attractive workplace and summarise our findings in a specification of basic demands dealing with safety, physical and psycho-social work environments and social responsibilities.

The mining industry needs to attract and recruit young talented people. An important task is, therefore, to create an attractive mining workplace that engages with, and motivates youngsters who are not particularly interested in working in the industry. This paper aims to illustrate a way forward for the mining industry to form healthy and safe workplaces honouring key components such as knowledge, skill, co-operation, continual development and acceptance of diversity. This is a way to create a vision of healthy and safe mining work. The mining industry must work towards zero vision; a future without accidents and hazardous environments. In this paper the authors discuss different aspects of an ‘attractive workplace’ and summarises lessons learnt in 26 statements dealing with safety, both physical and social work environments, and social responsibility. The authors hope these recommendations will provide some guidance for how attractive workplaces should be designed for future deep mining.The paper is based on lessons from two large European projects, a Swedish-Polish project: The Smart Mine of the Future; and a European Union project: Sustainable Intelligent Mining Systems (SIMS). Attritioning has been a method of improving mineral extraction for over 60 years, however it is only recently that an understanding of the mechanism employed and the improvement in efficiency that have been achieved.The paper will discuss these improvements and how to overcome the problems that have been raised. At present there is a dearth of information on the correct design and operation of these machines.The paper will address these issues as well as fluid on the Zeta potential, micro shear, retention residence time and pilot plant operation.A study on the hydrodynamics of attritioner operation has been identified and will be discussed.Surface chemistry, clean lines of attrition material and the treatment of fines significant advances in the understanding of attritioning highlighted.CITATION:Baguley, W, 2013. In some deposits valuable heavy mineral quality is poor due to increased mineral surface coatings from higher slimes and more competent sand orebodies. Mineral surface coating can include silica or aluminium rich clay minerals and iron based minerals that render the final product quality off-specification, in this case specifically ilmenite and zircon. Conventional physical beneficiation processes such as magnetic separation, electrostatic separation and gravity separation are not able to remove these surface coatings. Surface dependent separation techniques such as electrostatic separators are affected by these coatings which hinders the rejection of non-valuable mineral from product. Attrition scrubbing is the most commonly used technique to reduce surface coatings, using mechanically induced particle to particle interaction, abrasion and shearing.In many cases it is a challenge to measure the surface removal efficiency of these scrubbing units. Elemental analysis techniques (ie X-ray flourescence) (XRF) in a multi mineral environment are unable to measure surface impurity reduction with enough precision. Mineralogical analysis (in this case Qemscan®) has constraints in terms of sample preparation with highly coated particles being plucked out during block polishing. This paper suggests a combination of laboratory separation techniques coupled with elemental analysis to evaluate the surface removal efficiency. Three different types of feed materials were used to analyse the efficiency of surface removal using production attritioner scrubbers. This approach relates the downstream beneficiation plant’s expected performance with that of the attrition scrubber’s scrubbing efficiency.

The performance of a system for detecting the onset of overloads on rod mills is described. The system has bee,, tested at CODELCO E1 Salvador Concentrator where, due t,, variations on size distribution of the copper ore feed, th' rod mill is frequently subject to overloads. The main inpur signal to the system is the rod mill sound, after being measured and analog conditioned. This signal and othe signals measuring the fresh ore feed and the mill watt addition are fed to a computer containing a simpl mathematical model. The model parameters are empiricall estimated and an analog output signal is generated, whic gives an early prediction of the overload condition. The experimental results described in this paper show that the overload condition may be predicted with an anticipation of about three minutes.

Risk management for resources and reserves includes examining the fundamental processes of data collection, interpretation, modelling and estimation. Newmont Australia has developed a procedures manual to assist mine sites to build Resource block models, estimate Ore Reserves, validate the outcome and report the results. An audit scheme has been developed to compliment the procedures manual by assessing the degree of site compliance with recommended practice. A score of between one and five stars is awarded to each site depending on its performance in the audit. Audits are undertaken by a team of three Newmont personnel over a three to five day period at each site. Scores are ultimately compared between sites and reviewed annually. The objective of the program is to encourage continuous improvement in the modelling, estimation, validation and reporting practices used at sites and in advanced projects. The scheme provides a method of risk management for the companyÆs biggest asset û its Ore Reserves. Newmont Mining Corporation is preparing to use the audit scheme internationally in part to conform with recent legislation requiring US companies to demonstrate that management systems and procedures are in place to monitor and verify the companyÆs assets.

The use of walk-through inspections, approvals and ad hoc investigations to ensure risk is kept within acceptable levels is reaching its limits of effectiveness. Further improvement in occupational health and safety requires a systems approach, and the use of Quality Management principles is an obvious basis for this. SafeGuard, a æbest practiceÆ model health and safety management system and audit criteria based on AS/NZS ISO 9001:1994, has been produced by the Department of Mines and Energy. Quality style audits of mine and quarry health and safety systems are now being carried out by the Inspectorate.

The Augusta underground mine at Costerfield in Central Victoria has been in operation since mid 2006; however, AGD Operations Pty Ltd have explored and undertaken open pit operations in the area for over 20 years. The high-grade, narrow gold-antimony orebody is being mined using both mechanised and hand-held methods, to produce up to 70 000 tonnes per annum at ten grams per tonne gold and six per cent stibnite. AGD Operations Pty Ltd processes the ore on site using gravity and flotation to produce two products; a concentrate which is sold to Chinese smelters and a gravity concentrate which is refined off-site. The circuit achieves up to 30 per cent recovery of gold from gravity methods. There are many challenges in the underground mine, including an orebody with an average width of 300 mm, very poor rock mass conditions in the host rock and variable dips in the ore along strike, between 45¦ and 90¦. The upper levels of the mine have been developed ready for stoping; however, their depths range from 20 m to 70 m below surface in both oxide and transitional material. A major fault structure consisting of mud has been encountered underground and is associated with the orebody causing very poor ground conditions, water inflow and requiring additional reinforcement. The northern limit of the mine is defined by the proximity of historical workings in the South Costerfield mine, which is being continuously dewatered.

The AuPlus" Systems have been applied in the gold mining industry to achieve improved gold recoveries, faster leach kinetics and reduced cyanide consumptions. Calcium or hydrogen peroxide, collectively known as peroxygens, can be used. The choice depending on plant design and the nature of the ore. Laboratory test work and plant trials are included in this paper to illustrate the benefits of peroxygen usage in extractive gold metal- lurgy.

The Mongol-Okhotsk belt consists of detached fragments of the Circum Pacific fold belt which have been trapped within the Mongol-Okhotsk fold belt. In its western part, the structures of the belt form an east-facing loop that is not connected with the other orogenic structures of Central Asia. In the eastern part of the belt (the Mongol-Okhotsk suture zone) the terranes form a zone between the Siberian craton to the north and the Bureya composite terrane to the south, that is linked with the Circum Pacific belt. The accretionary terranes, together with their Precambrian backstops, form a series of consistently-stacked, paired units that are bounded by northwest and north trending sinistral strike-slip faults. The ages of the rocks forming these accretionary complexes vary from Late Precambrian - Carboniferous in the west to Cambrian - Jurassic in the east. The terranes developed due to a progressive westward stacking of the accretionary complexes during the process of accretionary growth. The magmatic rocks young eastward indicating that migration of the magmatic front of the arc followed the eastward growth of the accretionary complexes. The accretionary terranes may be differentiated by their Paleozoic lithological assemblages. Only the Selemdzha, Niman, and Kerbi terranes located in the eastern part of the Mongol-Okhotsk suture zone contain significant amounts of black shale, and it is these terranes that host the bulk of the hardrock and placer gold mineralisation that is present within the suture zone. Gold mineralisation is present both as vein style and disseminated mineralisation within structural duplexes.

Probably no other country or coutinent has so many rich deposits of various different minerals as Australia. Long ago in the days of my boyhood in the old land the marvellous discoveries of high percentage copper at Burra Burra, Peak Downs, Yudanamutana, and other mines, was one of the principal themes of conversation in mining circles whilst the specimens of malachite, azurite, etc, brought home by returning miners were the admiration of my boyish eyes.Later on the WalIaroo and Moonta mines still further helped to heighten the reputation of Australia as a copper-producing country. During the 21 years that the writer has been resident in the Australian colonies, other mineral deposits have sprung into prominence, and with a Mount Bischoff for tin, a Broken Hill for silver and lead, and a Mount Morgan for gold, Australia can now boast that it has had within its borders the leading mines of the world, in four different minerals, and still at least maintains that pre-eminence in gold, silver and tin. To the miner from the old land, Australian mining is at first a revelation and a wonder. In very many instances he looks in vain for the regular strike and dip of the veins he has been accustomed to'Smooth hanging and foot alls are often wanting. 'Huge irregular deposits, like those mentioned above, viz., Burra Burra, Mount Bischoff, Broken Hill, and Mount Morgan, are mysteries that will take time to fathom-if, indeed, they are ever thoroughly understood and in many a smaller deposit there is much to interest alike the professor in the college and the miner in the mine.

This paper summarises the lessons learned during a recent carbon reactivation kiln upgrade project at the Sukari Gold Mine in Egypt. The kiln is being replaced to ensure that the plant achieves full value from the current throughput expansion from 5 to 10 Mt/a.The suitability of the original engineering design criteria for kiln selection and the adequacy of the original kiln are reviewed in the light of the carbon chemistry, operating experience and a site inspection of the kiln. Particular aspects of the reactivation facility are discussed including: predrying, preheating, feeding, gas seals, kiln heat transfer, steam injection, counter-current sweep gas flow, carbon cooling, fines minimisation and removal.Design criteria for a carbon predryer, reactivation kiln and cooler combination for carbon heavily fouled by high molecular weight frothers and collectors are discussed and the abridged Ausenco datasheet for the combination is presented.Responses to a request for a budget price sent to most of the worldÆs suppliers of carbon regeneration kilns are summarised.CITATION:Claflin, J K, La Brooy, S R J and Preedy, D, 2013. The Ausmelt Catalytic Waste Converter (CWC) has been developed for use in the treatment of industrial wastes and for the recycling of secondary materials. Ausmelt Technology uses a top submerged lance system within a versatile and efficient slag bath reactor. High temperature pyrometallurgical reactions are carefully controlled within an oxidised molten siliceous slag such that metals can be extracted from waste feedstock for recycling, with non-volatile elements reporting to the slag, usually as oxides. Modification of the slag chemistry results in a final slag product that is stable, vitrified and is able to pass standard leach tests such that it is safe to discard or be used in civil engineering applications. Toxic components in the wastes such as organohalides can be completely destroyed and are prevented from reforming. Waste to energy conversion is practiced by the addition of a heat exchanger/steam generator in the converter offgas system. The Ausmelt CWC has been used for recovering zinc from residues and slags, treating spent potliner (SPL) from the aluminium industry and a wide range of electronic and other potentially valuable waste materials. Methods of monitoring the exhaust gases at different stages in the CWC gas handling system are discussed. The assay of these gases prior to emission is used to assist in the control of the converter chemistry to ensure the complete oxidative breakdown of the feedstock.

In Australia we usually define "resource" in purely material terms, and rarely relate it to intellect and human capacity. We look at the sheer abundance of our natural resources and are satisfied with the feeling that we don't really need-to rely on using our brains. Certainly our country is fortunate to have the mineral resources it does, but in many ways Australia's worst enemy is its "lucky country" syndrome because we tend to underutilise the great resource we have in the capacities of our people. Raw material exports will undoubtedly continue to contribute a major share of our export revenue, but to harness the riches our country has to offer most effectively we need the vision and planning necessary to bring together our material and human resources. There is a need not only to find, exploit and process our minerals economically, but to turn as much of our mineral wealth as possible into high value products before it leaves the country. In particular we must use our brainpower if we want to maximise economic benefit from and political influence over the strategic minerals which leave our shores. In the past we have been successful in finding and exploiting minerals because our mining industry has been in the forefront of private sector research and development. But if Australia is to have an advantage over other mineral rich countries in insulating itself from the effects of cyclical swings in commodity prices, then the future of the industry must lie even more in technological sophistication rather than depending. on such considerations as size and location of mineral deposits. To survive, our mineral industry must have the foresight and resourcefulness to make its own luck. There are two keys to increased efficiency in exploration and production and in further processing methods: enhancement of the skills of the workforce and continual improvement of R&D.

It is a great privilege to be invited to give this address at this centenary conference. A centenary is a time for recollection, for celebration and for looking ahead. The AusIMM has much to celebrate and many things to recall. I hope in this address to make some useful comments about Australia's future (and mindful of but not forgetting New Zealand), looking ahead for 25 years or so, and the mining industry's role in that future.

In September, Croesus Mining presented our company at the Mining 2000 Forum in Melbourne, a city caught up with multinational protestors demonstrating against multi-national companies.

During 1999 there was a considerable turnaround in world prices for most minerals and energy commodities, except for the bulk commodities (coal and iron ore). The main reasons for this turnaround were: improved prospects in demand for most minerals and energy commodities in the Asian region following a return to both economic and industrial production growth in key economies in that region; continued moderate growth in demand in Europe and North America; substantial production cutbacks in a range of minerals and energy industries; effective reductions in the supply of oil by OPEC nations; and an announcement by European central banks that they would cap the amount of gold they sell and loan in the next five years. Most of these influences are expected to be sustained into the first years of the new millennium. In 2000, with exception of coal, average world prices of minerals and metals are forecast to rise significantly. Gross domestic product and industrial production is expected to grow in some European countries and most Asian countries in 2000 and, with moderate growth expected to be sustained in the United States, demand for minerals and energy is expected to increase. AustraliaÆs main bulk commodities, iron ore and coal, saw prices set for 1999 - 2000 at substantially lower levels in negotiations in early-1999. Double digit price cuts were locked in. However, similar falls appear to have been avoided for coal in Japanese Fiscal Year 2001, while increases of between four and six per cent were achieved for iron ore. Forecast modest recovery in economic growth in Japan and increasing demand elsewhere in Asia are expected to lead to tighter market conditions in 2000. Beyond 2000, world minerals and energy markets will be influenced by the expected robust global supply responses of minerals and energy companies, against a background of sustained economic growth and industrial production growth in major consuming countries. Over the medium-term, a return to declining real prices which have been evident for most commodities in the recent past, is expected as exploration, mining and processing technological change and associated productivity growth continues to reduce industry costs. While lower rates of exploration and mining investment in Australia between 1998 and 2000 will modestly constrain the rate of future industry expansion, Australia remains an important contributor to expected growth in global minerals supply over the medium-term. Australian mine production is forecast to grow between 1999 - 2000 and 2004 - 05, boosted by production from recently commissioned mines and minerals processing facilities and comissioning of other projects at advanced stages of planning.

The Australian coal industry has undergone sevenfold growth over the last 30 years and since 1985 has been the world's largest coal exporter. Three quarters of Australia's coal production is exported so its future is dependent on it remaining internationally competitive with other energy sources and other coal exporting countries. Coal is likely to increase its share of the energy market during the nine- ties as oil prices increase, new coal-fired capacity is commissioned and some form of nuclear energy is developed which is of acceptable safety standards to the community for use in the 21st century. Gas may take a part of coal's anticipated market share by the Year 2000. While coal exports will increase from China, Colombia, Indonesia and Venezuela and satisfy some of this additional coal demand Australia will also expand its export production, due to its existing advantages. The United States, Canada, South Africa, Poland and USSR seem unlikely to enjoy the same degrees of expansion and some, particularly Poland and USSR, will decline. Australia will always find it difficult to compete in the more distant markets due to levels of ocean freight, although its high quality coals will tend to partly offset such disadvantage.
