Experience in evaluating grade control at operating mines has shown that a number of similar errors re-occur in diverse settings. These can be broadly classed as technical errors, and procedural or grade contra management errors. Examples of typical errors are presented a; generalised case studies. A brief explanation of why the recommender solution worked is also presented for each case.

The behaviour and deportment of indium during the precipitation of sodium jarosite from Fe2(S04)3 - Na2SO4 solutions were investigated. Indium is readily precipitated with sodium jarosite, and the extent of In precipitation increases as the In concentration of the solution increases. It was shown that In 3+ substitutes for Fe 3+ in the jarosite structure to form a nearly ideal solid solution series. On a molar basis, the precipitation of Fe is slightly favoured over that of In, and the difference is reduced as the pH increases. Sodium jarosite precipitation becomes kinetically rapid at temperatures >70¦C, but increasing temperatures in the range 70 to 150¦C affect neither the relative precipitation of In and Fe nor the composition of the jarosite product. Low Na2SO4 concentrations result in reduced product yields and jarosite precipitates in which H3O' > Na+. The hydronium-rich precipitates have reduced In contents. Increasing the ZnSO4 concentration of the solution slightly increases the quantity of jarosite formed and results in the incorporation of -0.3 per cent Zn in the jarosite structure. Otherwise, the presence of ZnSO4 has no significant effect on the composition of the jarosite. Seeding accelerates the rate of jarosite precipitation but has a negligible influence on the deportment of In. The jarosite precipitation reaction at 98¦C is relatively rapid and near-steady state conditions are achieved in - 6 h even in the absence of seed. The initially precipitated jarosite is slightly enriched in In with respect to Fe. The ferric ion concentration of the solution has a significant influence on both the amount of jarosite formed and its composition. In particular, the jarosites precipitated from dilute Fe3+ media have significantly enhanced In contents. Hence, it may be possible to recover - 25 per cent of the dissolved In, at the 1000 mg/L level, in a jarosite precipitate assaying - ten per cent In by the controlled oxidation-precipitation of sodium jarosite from a ferrous sulphate processing solution.

This paper describes the development and installation of equipment for continuously measuring separating density in the dense medium cyclone circuits of the four million tpa Port Kembla B/C plant coal washeries. Monitoring equipment consisting of magnetic coils and differential pressure cells were installed in U-tubes taking the full flow of magnetite from the drain sections of the product drain and rinse screens. The monitoring equipment measures overflow magnetics concentration and overflow density continuously and has operated since 1989. From these measurements and calibration trials, the separating density of operating cyclone modules can be inferred reliably. Variographic analyses of the data show that medium density control to +/- 0.002 RD units and separation density control to +/- 0.007 RD units are achievable. Either method for measuring separation density can be used with approximately the same accuracy, although the overflow density measurement technique suffers from the need to have regular flushing of the Dp cells which complicates the signal analysis. Data from the plant shows that separation density can be controlled by regulating medium density, but the assumption of a constant offset between medium density and separation density is erroneous.

This paper, one of two written about the Queensland Railways Brunswick Street tunnels presented at the VIII Australian Tunnelling Conference, 1993, describes the design and monitoring aspects of the railway tunnels built between Central Station and Brunswick Street Station.The design was mainly influenced by the need to minimise settlement of buildings above the route. Chromite tailings assaying 21.2 per cent Cr2O3 was upgraded to 48.7 per cent Cr2O3 at a recovery of 72.0 per cent using column flotation with a mixture of anionic collectors at pH 11. Electrokinetic methods were used to elucidate the mechanism of collector adsorption and correlate the findings with the optimum flotation conditions. Multivalent constituent ions such as Cr3+, A13+, Fe2+ and Mg2+ were found to adsorb on chromite surface and shift the zpc of chromite in the direction of oxide form of the mineral. The anionic collectors also imparted a negative charge to chromite in the entire pH region. The higher zeta potentials obtained upon adding the anionic collectors is ascribed to the adsorption of anionic surfactant onto the positively charged chromite surface. The positive sites are generated through formation of significant amount of hydroxy complexes of magnesium at pH 11. Complementary infrared data reveal the absence of a shift in the spectra indicating the possibility of physical adsorption in the system.

The South Junction deposit of St Barbara Mines Limited was discovered in 1989 by the geologists of Ross Atkins Mining.The deposit occurs in the lower part of the Gabanintha Formation of the Lukes Creek Group in the Mt Magnet -Meekatharra greenstone belt. Country rock is predominantly talc-chlorite schist. Gold mineralisation is associated with north-south shear zones, quartz-carbonate-fuchsite alteration of the ultramafic rocks and in particular close to deeply weathered quartz-albite porphyry. Many Australian tunnelling and mining companies regularly investigate different methods or equipment in an attempt to keep ahead of their competition. Sometimes the result is a new approach or process which wins a tender or provides an advanced solution to a problem.The Australian Government has a policy of encouraging forward thinking among Australian companies and provides a range of incentives. One of these incentives is currently available retrospectively to 1985 - 86, and the registration process is relatively simple with only one form to be completed. Companies who investigate methods of raising productivity could be reimbursed for the costs of the investigation.

Understanding how liberated and unliberated minerals behave in comminution and classification circuits is of vital importance to ensure that maximum liberation occurs without unnecessary and costly overgrinding. This paper presents the results of a study carried out by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre and Newcrest Mining of the liberation performance of Newcrest Mining's New Celebration grinding circuit. Using data from surveys of the circuit, together with QEM*SEM analyses of individual streams, a detailed picture of the liberation and classification of gold-associated pyrite is presented. In addition the relationship between the QEM*SEM analyses and results from laboratory leach tests are also discussed. Using the survey and QEM*SEM data, mathematical models were constructed of the performance of the ball mill and cyclones, and simulations carried out to investigate ways of improving the performance of the circuit. The results from the more promising scenarios are Reviewed.

The Bannockburn gold deposit is located 67 km north-west of Leonora in a poorly exposed part of the Norseman-Wiluna belt of Western Australia. The deposit consists of narrow, complexly shaped orebodies which have presented a challenge to find successful grade control and mining methods. The deposit also presents an opportunity to examine in detail the geology of this part of the Norseman-Wiluna belt.This paper discusses the geology and structure of the Bannockburn gold deposit as well as the grade control and mining systems developed to define the ore and extract it with minimum dilution. We discuss the different techniques employed for grade control in the past and their shortcomings, and the evolution of the present system of doing grade control in cross section from blast hole assays.

The new legislative regime applying to the mining industry has been in force for nearly two years. However the parameters for the permits required under the Crown. Minerals Act 1991 and the resource consents required under the Resource Management Act 1991 are still being established. Mining operators will benefit from participating in the development of policies and plans currently being formulated by local authorities. The Energy Legislation Amendment Bill currently before the House contains amendments to the Crown Minerals Act to clarify points of uncertainty and to reduce transaction costs where possible.

Recent work on computerised mineral resource databases at the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences Limited has concentrated on the development of the GERM, REGCHEM, and MINLIT databases, and their integration in a Geographic Information System using MapInfo software on an IBM-compatible microcomputer local area network. GERM (GEological Resource Map) is a mineral deposit inventory with national coverage and more than 10 300 entries. REGCHEM (REGional Exploration GeoCHEMistry) is a database of stream sediment analyses from open-file mining company reports, containing more than 14 000 sample sites from the Coromandel and west Nelson regions. MINLIT (MINeral LITerature bibliography) is an annotated bibliography of literature on topics relating to the exploration and geology of mineral deposits in New Zealand, and includes more than 5000 entries for published books and papers, and unpublished mining company reports, university theses, and government reports. Master sets of GERM and MINLIT continue to be maintained on a VAX mainframe network but REGCHEM is operated only in the PC environment using the Microsoft ACCESS database management system software.

This paper presents the experimental results on the effects of slurry Theology on ultra-fine grinding by a stirred ball mill. The amount of dispersant, slurry density and the particle size were selected as the parameters. The viscosity of dolomite-water slurry was measured by rotational viscometers. It was found that by adding enough dispersant, the effect of particle size from 1 to 10 pm on the slurry theology could be eliminated, but a strong effect of slurry density (tested for a range of 65 to 75 wt per cent) remained. The use of dispersant transformed the slurry from Bingham plastic flow to dilatant flow, which reduced the yield stress to zero, but increased the viscosity at higher shear rates. During the milling process, the viscosity was stable. The yield stress, however, increased suddenly from zero after a certain milling time. The mill operation stopped at the point where the yield stress increased due to poor slurry fluidity. The milling efficiency was found to be higher at a lower amount of dispersant addition or a lower slurry density within the experimental limits.

It will consider such influences on the new disposal, allocation, pricing and management arrangements for the Crown's mineral estate as the existence of prior ownership claims, exclusivity in access, the requirement for cost recovery and the treatment of contingent liabilities.

In this paper, it is shown that the higher the pre-activation concentration of copper ions in pulp, the larger the adsorption amounts of copper ions and xanthate on arsenopyrite surface, and the better the arsenopyrite flotability in strong alkaline medium. On arsenopyrite pre-activated with cupric ions, the xanthate adsorption density in strong alkaline medium is approximately equivalent to that of cupric ions. It is therefore concluded that an amount of copper ions adsorb on arsenopyrite surface first, and then an amount of xanthate can (and only can) adsorb dependently on the surface active sites produced by these adsorbed copper ions on the mineral, so that arsenopyrite is kept rather flotable and is hardly separated from pyrite even in very strong alkaline medium. Selectively wiping out the surface copper active sites on arsenopyrite is the key point of successful separation of pyrite from arsenopyrite. According to this theory, a new 'SZLI' (know-how) method was recommended to satisfactorily deal with the difficult separation.

A problem with secondary breaking at one of the mines of Pasminco Mining led to a study of new rock breaking technologies. Many of the techniques being developed had emerged from the thrust in the USA for continuous drill=break excavation. Such approaches to rock breaking highlighted the applicability of what would normally be classified as tunnelling techniques, to the secondary breaking sector - and possibly the reverse. As a direct result of the investigations for suitable technologies, Pasminco Mining supported the development of two improved rock breaking methods specifically targeting secondary breaking, one of which could be applied to continuous excavation.

Completely dry or completely wet materials are comparatively easy to screen, but materials with moisture contents between these two extremes can present varying degrees of difficulty. The presence of moisture can impair the performance of a dry screening plant in a number of ways: ò agglomeration of fine undersize particles onto larger oversize particles, resulting in the fine particles being misplaced to the oversize; ò increasing attractive forces between particles that hinder stratification and particle presentation to the screen; and ò blinding of the screen apertures caused by fine moist particles clinging to the screen which reduces the effective aperture size and the open area of the screen. Test work on full-scale screens has shown that the agglomeration of fine particles onto larger particles only occurs once the equilibrium moisture content of the ore is exceeded, and that the quantity of adhering fines present is proportional to the surface area of the larger particles. An -adhering fines screen model has been developed from this work, and by using relationships derived between the model parameters and feed moisture content, the effect of changes in feed moisture on both product quality and operation of iron ore dry screening plants is predicted.

The behaviour of cationic and anionic collector mixtures in the feldspar-quartz flotation system has been investigated througl conductivity, surface tension, zeta-potential and flotation studies. Tht results show the formation of molecular complexes between oppositel; charged collector ions through charge neutralisation. The molecular complexes are found to have a higher surface activity than the individua components. The mole ratio of the mixed composition is found to have, significant effect on flotation. Geostatistics - a tool used by geologists and mine planning engineers to estimate grades and rapidly evaluate alternative mining strategies has reached an advanced stage of development for the silver-lead-zinc orebodies at Isa and Hilton Mines. Geostatistics has been used for over a decade in the massive copper orebodies but the stratiform lead-zinc orebodies are much more complex and provided a completely different set of challenges. Recent increases in computer processing speed and power provided by the Integrated Mine Planning System (IMPS) has aided the development of the geostatistics package. Also the formation of a project team and the subsequent in-house development which has drawn together the expertise of geologists, engineers and system analysts has contributed significantly to the success of the project.The most important feature of any approach to modelling the lead-zinc orebodies is that the kriging search must consider estimate and sample points according to their positions relative to bedding surfaces. By transforming co-ordinates as perpendicular offsets from a plane representing the local strike and dip, it is possible to elongate the ellipsoidal influence to parallel bedding. By interactively modelling surfaces using CAD facilities and then specifying these surfaces as 'hard' or 'soft' boundaries, the geologist has complete control over the kriging process.
