The Plant Control and Data Logging System for the Loy Yang Open Cut (LYOC) is part of a control and communications network designed to provide a high level of surveillance of open cut plant and facilitate the efficient co- ordination of operations and plant maintenance. The computer system selected utilises a central dual mini-computer and multiple microcomputer data transmission network ,linked to the plant controllers using distributed, microcomputer based remote data collectors or outstations. Several aspects of the computer system are outlined.

Preliminary petrographic investigations of eight Upper Permian coal seams of the Muja sub-basin, Collie Coalfield, reveal that the coal is high in inertinite and relatively low in vitrinite and exinite contents. The exinite content of Collie coal is relatively high when compared to other Australian coal of similar age. In addition the mineral matter content of the coal is very much lower than comparable Permian coal of Eastern Australia. The higher exinite content could be attributed to the type of Glossopteris flora, and the lower mineral matter content to the environment of deposition postulated for the Collie Coal Measures.

Recent work has shown that, in at least some instances of regional metamorphism, metamorphic diffusion has been restricted to such relatively minute distances (of the order of 1.0 mm and much less), that there is no clear, direct evidence of prograde metamorphic mineral reactions, and that metamorphic equilibrium does not appear to have been attained through even very small domains.A number of stratiform orebodies and their immediate metapelitic environments exhibit very large, seemingly "disequilibrium", assemblages of regional metamorphic index materials. One such, in north-eastern Australia, includes laumontite, prehnite, chamosite, stilpnomelane and related hydrous iron silicates, primary chlorite, sericite-muscovite, epidote, actinolite, biotite, almandine, andradite, metamorphic hornblende and clinopyroxene, scapolite, staurolite and sillimanite, all within a 20 metres length of a single diamond drill core. In this and several related occurrences it appears that metamorphism has involved very small scale in situ transformation of pre-existing materials rather than large-scale diffusion and reaction, and hence that the observed metamorphic minerals have probably been derived directly from precursor materials of sedimentary/diagenetic origin.It is concluded that the fluctuating seafloor interplay between warm, acid, concentrated hydrothermal waters with cold, alkaline, dilute seawater during stratiform ore formation, together with diagenetic processes, leads to the formation of a wide range of clay, chlorite, mixed-layer clay and clay/chlorite, and zeolite precursor materials and hence, later, to the complex assemblages of metamorphic minerals closely associated with some stratiform ores. Commonly included in highly localized assemblages of this kind are various minerals which, in conventional regional metamorphic studies, are generally regarded as indicating widely different grades of metamorphism.

This paper presents an economic study comparing two gold recovery processes, zinc precipitation (Merrill-Crowe) and carbon-in-pulp (CIP). Capital, operating, and gold losses costs from an actual CIP plant study are compared to costs developed from a hypothetical Merrill-Crowe process flowsheet. ' Results indicate an overall economic advantage to CIP over Merrill-Crowe for plants processing slurries within the range of the five gold solution grades selected for this study.

Pre-drainage experiments have been conduct- ed at Appin, Cook, John Darling, Leichhardt, Macquarie, Metropolitan and Moura No. 2 Collieries. Appin (550 m deep) experiences particular gas problems in development drivages, and the almost pure CH4 seam gas makes difficult tiro compliance with statutory maxima in intakes and returns. Patterns of 43 mm diameter drain- a,.;e holes drilled ahead and laterally into virgin coal have improved gas conditions in working places and have allowed tolerable advance rates. Cook, Leichhardt, Metropolitan and Moura No,. 2 Collieries have experienced gas and stress phenomena ranging from conical bursts less than one tonne to full scale instantan- -us outbursts of hundreds of tonnes with tens ,f thousands of cubic metres of seam gas. Gas ~Irainage experiments with patterns of holes up a,, 200 mm diameter have been undertaken with ;,;siness monitors on the coal to establish .lative effectiveness. Incremental flows into mg 43 mm diameter boreholes have investigated drainage patterns relative to length, and at comparative incremental flows have nlicated lowered permeability zones at stress ,.,utments. Australia has a large resource of manganese at BHP's Groote Eylandt mine which has been progressively developed over the last two decades. While much of the product is marketed internationally to the iron and steel industry, substantial quantities are processed in Australia at the Company's ferro alloy works in Tasmania. In addition, small but increasing quantities of ore are being consumed by the non-metallurgical industry. Fluctuating fortunes in the steel industry produce similar trends in the marketing of manganese. The increasing cost of freight and power together with strict environmental control is further affecting the market balance. Mine operators are expanding into the alloy making field. Reduction in usage in less developed countries is occurring.

Movements in the mineral trade cycle are almost invariably out of phase with the gradua- tion rate of mining engineers, metallurgists and geologists. This commonly leads to situations where graduates are scarce in "boom" periods and in free supply when the trade cycle is depressed. This problem reflects the difference in elasticity and flexibility between the educational and industrial environments. In the educational system the decision that brings students to graduation is made three to five years prior to the event. This is quite a lengthy period of time in terms of mineral trade cycles. By contrast, the mineral industry has far more elasticity in responding to short term fluctuations in mineral trade. The authors do not believe that the mis- match between the availability of skilled personnel and the manpower requirements of industry in the short term is intractable. Much is to be gained by more realistic and rational manpower forecasting combined with greater flexibility in the educational realm.

Access to the Rosebery Orebody, which dips into the western slopes of Mount Black at 45¦, has been achieved in sequence by the following means: - A series of adits down to 8 level - An inclined shaft (No. 1 Shaft) sunk internally from 8 level to 14 level - A vertical circular concrete lined shaft (No. 2 Shaft) sunk internally from 4 level to 19 level. Although the orebody has been fairly well defined to 19 level, deeper ore occurrences have been outlined by a series of drill holes decreasing in frequency with depth to 26 level. No. 2 Shaft (sink) was stopped some 10 m below 19 level in order to make an early start on doubled production at West Coast Mines, with the intention of subsequently extending the shaft or of driving a decline from the lowest operating horizon for deeper access. The decline approach was adopted some six years after production commenced from No. 2 Shaft. The reasons for that decision are outlined, together with an account of the constraints and design requirements imposed by commencing by a vertical shaft in the hanging wall of the orebody.

Existing fluid flow techniques may be readily applied to the design of ranges for seam gas drainage. The Reynolds number characterises the flow regime within the pipe and it can be used in conjunction with data on absolute pipe surface roughness to determine the system friction factor. The application of the solution to the isothermal compressible flow equation utili- sing Moody friction factors and the concept of equivalent length of pipe for fittings and valves provides a practical method for sizing gas ranges. The physical capacity of a range can be decreased by the existence of significant quantities of water in the range and also by the ingress of air into the system at poor pipe joints etc. Both problems can be elimin- ated by adequate attention to design detail.

Detailed observations were made for two existing continuous miner and shuttlecar systems. A simple model for the shift average cycle consisted of three time components - delays, mining and transport. Cycle improvement and productivity improvement factors are derived and used to predict the theoretical improvement which the observed cycles could achieve. Various strategies of action ranging from short-term optimisation through to long-term planning for continuous haulage systems are evaluated. High potential for improvement is shown for a wide range of operating conditions. An overview is presented for systems, currently available or under active development, which can accept coal directly from continuous miners and offer continuous haulage to the surface. Systems are broadly classified as mechanical-roof mounted, mechanical-floor mounted and hydraulic transportation.

Western Mining Corporation, managing partner of the Windarra Nickel Project are in- stalling a raise-bored haulage shaft and under- ground crushing system at the Mt. Windarra Nickel Mine. The system will be the second of its type installed by W.M.C., the first being in- stalled at the Otter-Juan mine in Kambalda in 1976/77. Both haulage systems became necessary as a result of the increasing production limi- tations, and escalating costs of a deep decline mine. The Windarra haulage system required a single 3m diameter vertical raise drill hole to a depth of 470 metres. Two five tonne skips in balance will hoist crushed ore and mullock to the surface, at a design rate of 200 tonnes per hour, effectively reducing truck haulage leads by up to 50%. It is expected the project will be in full operation by mid 1982 and will enable the mine to achieve an annual production rate of 600,000 t.p.a. by 1983.

Mining is taking place at increasing depths of cover on the Southern Coalfield beneath predominantly massive sandstone strata. Within the next twenty years, there will be longwall mining at depths greater than 600 m. As the Sydney Metropolitan area continues to expand and as coal mining approaches these urban areas subsidence will continue to become an increasinglY important aspect of coal mining research. Investigations, commenced in the mid 1960's, allow prediction of subsidence in the Southern Coalheld with reasonable confidence. The work is showing that the characteristics of thc subsidence troughs over the deeper mining at Appin differ from the characteristics of mine subsidence at less cover.The longwall mining at Appin Colliery has resulted in a maximum measured subsidenee of 730 mm. The maximum strains were small because of the large radii of curvature of the subsidence profiles. There was no damage to any of the buildings in the township of Appin.

I am very pleased to be here at this seminar on carbon-in-pulp (CIP) technology for the extraction of gold as I am always interested to hear about any new development in any aspect of gold ore processing. We can expect to learn a great deal from the papers to be presented over the next few days. It is not my purpose to give a detailed description of the CIP process nor to give a complete historical review. However, in this opening address it was thought appropriate that I should mention some historical features and some technical factors to set the scene for subsequent papers. Arm Royalty systems of different types are used throughout Australia by both state and federal governments to raise revenue and thus facilitate in the proper distribution of mineral wealth. Royalty systems should be neutral and equitable but by their very nature these objectives are impossible to obtain. Because of the individual nature of mineral deposits, in particular variable cutoff grades and tonnages, governments should be aware of the possible trade off between short and long term gains of the particular royalty scheme introduced.

A method for the determination of the gas content of coal seams is presented which improves upon existing methods. The method makes use of a gravitational technique for measurement of the gas desorbed. The amount of lost gas is estimated by determining an empirical relationship relating the desorption of gas with time for each sample separately. This is to replace the assumption that desorp- tion follows a square root law with time. Laboratory investigations have been conducted which indicate that the square root desorption law does not hold good for carbon dioxide. Results of investigations on various factors influencing the technique are presented. It is shown that co-efficients of the empirical equation are dependent upon the elapsed time and the period of observation. Data about gas pressure measurements is presented and it is concluded that gas pressure can be approxi- mated to 0.6 times the pressure below a column of water equal to the depth of cover. The Isa Mine of Mount Isa Mines Limited currently produces 5.4 million tonnes of copper ore and 3.3 million tonnes of silver, lead and zinc ore annually. Of this, 5.1 million tonnes of copper ore and 2.2 million tonnes of silver-lead-zinc ore is produced by sublevel open stoping. This paper summarises the capabilities, operating practices and problems encountered with current production drilling practices used to drill sublevel open stopes at Mount Isa.

Biologically-mediated phenomena are involved in many of the natural processes by which mineral deposits are formed and ore bodies transformed and degraded. They may facilitate the environmentally-damaging effects of mining and mineral-processing operat- ions. Under contrived and controlled conditions, however, these phenomena can form the basis for economically- attractive processes for the recovery of metals from low-grade deposits by dump, heap or in situ leaching. They have application also in processes for the regeneration of leaching reagents and some potential for'-the recovery of metals from dilute solution. The micro- organisms concerned are potential sources for the production of novel flotation and solvent-extraction reag- ents. Perhaps the greatest opportunity for biotechnological processes in min- ing and metallurgy lies in the possib- ility of the evolving of novel proced- ures for the substantially complete recovery of metals from process tail- ings by the unlocking of recalcitrant and complex mineral assemblages, and for the beneficiation of some mineral materi,hls.

Various aspects concerning gold are mentioned below. These have no common theme but suggest points of interest any one of which, if warranted, could lead to development later and elsewhere. 'High level' auriferous gravels The gold deposits of Victoria are commonly classified as being either primary or secondary. Most primary occurrences comprise gold present in quartz reefs, together with other lode-like occurrences in which gold is associated with various sulphides, with or without quartz. Secondary occurrences are derived by physical release of primary gold and subsequent concen- tration of it as a constituent of sediments. Secondary gold deposits may be themselves eroded so leading to third or even fourth generation gold.

The additional information that Clarke and Taylor (1982) provide about the important but poorly documented Ardlethan deposit is, of course, very welcome. However their contention that structural considerations, in conjunction with petrology, alter the interpretation of the mineralogical and geochemical data presented previously (Scott, 1981) is not accompanied by adequate supporting evidence. Indeed characteristics of the orebodies studied invalidate their arguments.Heterogeneity between matrix and fragments is not a problem in the South Cherry and Ardwest orebodies because most samples are comprised entirely of interlocking hydrothermal assemblages with a fabric and mineralogy that is uniform through both former breccia fragments and matrix. In hand specimen, the rock superficially resembles altered granite and, as indicated by Clarke and Taylor (1982), a brecciated texture is difficult to discern. In thin section, relict brecciated textures can be observed as localized changes in the grainsize or in the distribution of minerals that outline former breccia fragments (P. J. Eadington, 1982, personal communication).Because of the intense brecciation and comminution of rocks (fragments < 10 mm are usual) in the South Cherry and Ardwest breccia bodies, hydrothermal recrystallization was complete, resulting in homogenization of fragments and matrix. Furthermore, the amount of sample analysed (-100 g for drill core and 2-3 kg for hand specimens) is sufficiently large to be representative of both former breccia fragments and matrix. The Carpathia and Stackpool orebodies, with their abundance of sedimentary fragments, have alteration superimposed on a heterogeneous fabric, and were not studied. Thus the problems of differentiating between fragments and matrix (Clarke and Taylor, 1982) are irrelevant to the particular orebodies described in my paper.Within the alteration halo, which is several hundred metres wide (Paterson, 1976), the very uniformity of the alteration assemblages implies that subsequent, postmineralization brecciation is of only minor significance.Indeed tourmaline pipes in the Ardwest pit are less than several metres across (Clarke, 1979) and produce minimal alteration in the surrounding rocks. Therefore the interpretation of the mineralogical zonation is not compromised by the recognition of several periods of brecciation.
