Bulk materials handling operations depend on efficient storage and gravity flow facilit- ies. ,It is important that proper attention be given to the complete storage bin or stockpile and feeder combination. The paper briefly des- cribes the principles of efficient feeding and discusses the common types of feeders under practice. While ideally unaided gravity flow should be sought, occasions arise where flow promotion is necessary. Various types of flow promotion devices are described and their operational features evaluated.

The selection and application of an effect- ive firing system first require a clear under- standing of the initiating abilities of the com- ponents in such systems. The conditions under which charges can be prematurely initiated by a detonating cord downline must be appreciated. This is a principal consideration in the design of a successful downline/'Anodet'/primer assembly. The advantages and limitations of an electric and several non-electric initiating systems are explained. The factors which in- fluenced selection of the two most suitable systems for use at Isa Mine (viz. downline/ 'Anodet'/primer assemblies and the reinforced long-lead 'Anodet'-type delay system) are dis- cussed. Blasts are detailed in which each of these has been applied. The initiating design for a hypothetical 2 x 106 tonne blast using electric short delay detonators and multi-channel exploders is presented. In this design, charges in remote blastholes are activated after the detonation of earlier firing charges by protecting the firing lines with sandbags.

Experimentation with new methods, materials and machines to improve primary drilling and blasting is a continuing practice in the hard rock quarry operations of the BMI Group. These experiments will continue in the remote hope that one day we may produce a perfect feed for the primary crusher. As this day is still a long way off, the necessity to break oversize boulders will be a problem to be faced for the foreseeable future. To gauge the efficiency of primary blasting from this point of view, BMI monitor the tonnes of material crushed in the primary crusher for each boulder requiring secondary breaking. Over a period of about 10 years, this figure has improved from 30 tonnes througi the primary crusher per boulder, to 100 tonnes per boulder at our largest operation, which produces in excess of 2 million tonnes per year. Evan with this improvement, 25,000 boulders require secondary breaking each year This paper does not provide the solution to this problem, as like primary blasting, it will have to be constantly reviewed as new products and techniques become available. Much effort over the years has been put into the task of devising parameters which adequately assess the metallurgical efficiency of mineral processmg operations. One of the most celebrated of these methods is the so-called "release analysis" method of Dell (1953) which tackles the problem in terms of an ideal separation based on sequential retreatment of the products and tails of a given separation process. Other methods have also been proposed by Jowett (1969) and by Holland-Batt (1971 ). While these procedures are appropriate to multi-component mineralogical separations, they perhaps do not lend themselves to the much more simple two-component systems encountered in coal preparation. However Dell (1962) has suggested the use of the term "specific profit" in coal preparation in order to assess the conditions that give maximum economic gain. Specific profit is derived from data relating washability data with equipment performance and operating costs. The procedure for using this criterion for comparative purposes is therefore somewhat cumbersome as is illustrated by its lack of widespread acceptance in the coal preparation literature.In contrast, an efficiency index, E, which is both simple and meaningful from the utilitarian standpoint, has been proposed by Tsiperovich and Evtushenko (1959a). This index is defined by the relation, E = Yield X Tailings ash/Product ash (1) A cursory examination of this parameter shows that it increases when yield and tailings ash increase and also when product ash decreases; all of which are desirable circumstances in coal cleaning operations.Further, it will be shown that slight variations in operation are amplified by this function which makes comparisons simple and direct.While the use of this index is quite extensive in the Soviet coal preparation literature for some reason it has not received wide usag~ elsewhere.

Geologists employed by Metals Exploration Pty. Ltd. discovered nickel enrichment at Greenvale, 180 kilometres West of Townsville, in 1967. Subsequent drilling proved an ore body containing 45 million dry tonnes of ore containing an average of 1.5% nickel and 0.11% cobalt. The Freeport Minerals Company, who had experience in treating lateritic nickel ore, were invited to participate in development of the ore body. This resulted in the formation of the operating company Queensland Nickel Pty. Ltd., jointly owned by Freeport Queensland Nickel Inc. and Metals Exploration Queensland Pty. Ltd. With the completion of successful pilot plant testing of Greenvale ore at the Freeport research facilities at Belle Chasse, Louisiana, a treatment plant was constructed at Yabulu, 24 kilometres North West of Townsville. A 225 kilometre railway line was built connecting the Greenvale Mine and Yabulu Treatment Plant. The ore reduction and ammonia/ammonium carbonate leaching flowsheet is similar to that constructed and operated by the Freeport Minerals Company during World War II at Nicaro, Cuba. Modifications to the Nicaro flowsheet implemented at Yabulu include facilities to recover cobalt in a mixed nickel/cobalt sulphide product and the reduction of nickel

Segregation roasting was used to recover more than 85 per cent of copper from crushed, minus 14 mesh refractory furnace-lining bricks. A plus 14 mesh fraction: which was high in copper, could be recycled directly to the smelter, giving an overall recovery of approximately 90 per cent. An oxidation roast at about 700°C was necessary, before segregation roasting, to convert copper sulphides and copper metal to sulphates and oxides. Withsegregatron temperatures in the range 600°-650°C the quantities of solid carbon and NaCI required are 2-5 per cent and 1 per cent respectively. P.V.C. coating from scrap copper wire can be used instead of NaCl as asource of hydrogen chloride for the segregation reaction.

Investigation of the "whole-rock" major element geochemistry of the Broken Hill lodes and of the rocks immediately enclosing them has been carried out on the full lengths of 19 diamond drill cores transecting B lode,A lode, No. 1 lens and Lead lode in The Zinc Corporation Ltd.-New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited, at the southern end of the line of lode.It appears that the abundances of all of the principal "non-sulphide components" - Si02, AI2O3, Ti02, CaO, MgO, MnO, K2O, TiO2 and P203 - are closely tied to the incidence of sulphide. The well-known direct relationship of calcium and manganese with the incidence of sulphide is confirmed, and to this is now added the pairing sulpnide-phosphate, which is particularly welldeveloped in the zinc lodes. It is also now shown that there is a clear inverse relationship between sulphide on one hand and AI2O3, Ti02 , MgO, and K2O on the other.Total Fe-which is an important constituent of both sulphide and non-sulphide-appears to occur in essentially similar amounts in ore and enclosing materials. The incidence of Na20, while generally depressed in ore, issomewhat erratic and equivocal. Si02 and sulphide usually show a highly systematic inverse relationship-a feature stemming inevitably from their being by far the two most abundant, and hence two co-dominant, materials ofthe ores.These features of elemental abundance are interpreted in the context of seaflooor hydrothermal ore deposition to give some insight into the amount and nature of detrital and of chemical sedimentation, the formation and accumulation of different clay minerals, the chemical and physical characteristics of the bottom waters, and the reasons for the comparative paucity of iron in the Broken Hill lode.

The grinding characteristics of quartz which is normally associated with gold bearing ores in Kalgoorlie area was examined in a stainless steel laboratory size ball-mill in the presence of inorganic and organic surface active reagents. The cationic species considered were Fe3+, Cu2+ and Ca2+, and the anions were CO? and S2 as these are normally present during the process of grinding of gold ores in the region. The organic surfactants examined were K-amyl- xanthate, dodecylamine-hydrochloride and the Grinding Aid XFS-4272 manufactured by Dow Chemical The study was primarily based on an examination of the electrokinetic properties of quartz surface in the presence of the grinding reagents. Zeta potential at different reagent additions and pH values in the presence of individual reagents were examined and the corresponding grinding charcteristics determined. The ash content of coal can be determined using radioisotope X-ray techniques. A number of overseas applications of X-ray techniques are described; however these suffer from the disadvantage of either not compensating for iron variations or, if compensation is used, using X-rays of low penetration with consequent sampling difficulties. Current Australian Atomic Energy Commiss- ion (AAEC) research on X-ray techniques is aimed at overcoming the limitations of these methods. The AAEC method involves making measurements proportional to mass absorption coefficients of X-rays in coal at two energies. Calculations and experiments with X-rays up to 35 keV have shown that ash content can be determined to about 1 wt.%. This work is being extended to higher X-ray energies to enable the technique to be used directly on a conveyor belt or in a hopper. Neutron techniques can be used to measure the concentration of specific elements such as carbon, hydrogen and silicon in coal. Their con- centration is correlated to the coal parameters of interest. Methods of moisture determination based on hydrogen measurement and ash determina- tion based on silicon and aluminium measurement are described. New plant has been commissioned to treat off-gases from the Fluo-solids Reactor in the Copper Smelter. The new section of plant was built onto an operating system and commissioned with minimum disruption to production. Under construction is a 270 m tall stack for Lead Smelter gases. Additional items for the Lead Smelter will include a new gas cooler, a central baghouse to replace Sinter Plant wet gas scrubbers, a new exhaust fan on the main baghouse, and ducting of drossing gases to the main baghouse. Emphasis is given to discussing improvements the new plant has made to working conditions, the general environment and increased production capability. Total expenditure in the two smelters is in the order of $25 million.

Drilling and shooting techniques at Moura open-cut have evolved over a period of 16 years and are the result of hard earned experience combined with established practices and consul- tation with professional services. The wide range of overburden types encoun- ted in the field requires varying methods to achieve the best results at all times. Safe working conditions for the employees and protection of mining equipment is of para- mount importance and close liaison is maintain- ed with the Department of Mines Queensland to keep abreast with changing legislation. Drill patterns, charging profiles, types of explosives and ultimate results are des- cribed in detail along with a resume of equip- ment. Costs of drilling, labour and explosives are also analysed with a total of approximately 20c per cubic metre of shot ground. Future developments and improvements to facilities are also outlined.

As previously advised, two of the raw materials for Wilsons Portland Cement are cement rock and limestone, both of which are quarried by the company. We now wish to give you a brief outline of these operations. The major material, cement rock, is obtained for our Portland Quarry at Tikorangi Hill, which is one mile west of the Works and a familiar landmark to travellers on state Highway 1. The geological structure of this deposit is involved, having intensive and irregular earth movements interpreted as large scale slumps where older rocks overlay younger rocks - numerous folds, faults and overthrusts are clearly visible.

Mary Kathleen Uranium Ltd. recommenced operations in early 1976 following a twelve year period of care and maintenance. Several sections of the plant were modified or completely changed for the second operation. The most important change was the replacement of ion exchange with solvent extraction as the means of purifying and upgrading uranium rich Isolutions Most of the problems experienced in the solvent extraction system originate from the leach liquor which has a strong tendency to form stable emulsions. This has been countered by some careful control of leaching conditions and by closer observation of operations in the solvent extraction area. Most problems have now been resolved and plant recoveries are quite Satisfactory.

As part of its Concentrator operation Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited uses wet high intensity magnetic separation to upgrade shaley low grade ore in the minus 0.5mm size range. Materials handling problems, largely caused by fine ore types and design deficiencies, surfaced in the Fines Treatment Plant soon after Concentrator commissioning in 1979. Surging throughout the circuit impaired process efficiency and added to problems caused by capacity and process control limitations. In 1981 extensive modification works were initiated to supplement minor changes made to that date. The new circuit significantly increases capacity and provides greater process control.

Keyboard patterns of hundreds of minor faults with vertical displacements of 3 mm to 2 m occur within the Greta coal seam and cause serious mining problems in collieries. Many of the faults are concentrated in linear zones termed swarms. One swarm is 600 m wide and more than 800 m long and others are of comparable size.The minor faults between the swarms are normal and are relatively widely spaced and show dip-slip movements, but the faults within a swarm are clustered and show strike-slip and oblique-slip movements. Fault swarms ofthis size and frequency have not previously been described from the Sydney Basin or on a comparable scale elsewhere but appear to be a widespread phenomenon in Australian coalfields. The faults are assigned to classes onthe basis of orientation which are then assigned to sequential phases I to IV on the basis of offsetting relations between representatives of each class. Phase I faults are minor thrusts. Phase IT, Ill, and IV faults are concentratedin the swarms and show sinistral strike-slip and normal dip-slip movements. The interference of slickenlines indicates that multiple movements have occurred within a single phase; their order is (i) strike slip (ii) dip slip and (iii) oblique slip. All faults truncate and post-date both cleat and sedimentary "stone" dykes.Phase I minor thrusts trend at a high angle to the Hunter Thrust and are considered to predate the Late Permian movements on the Hunter Thrust. Phase II and III minor faults are younger and may be any age between the latePermian and Tertiary.

The mining, metallurgical, and petroleum industries can be viewed as financial or as social institutions or both. The differences between these two conceptions of their businesses will influence their environmental and social actions. During the next 10-20 years western industry will be subject to a drop in the growth of a more highly educated labour force and to the emergence of holistic economics, new national goals, and a new ecological perspective. The profitability of the mining industry may therefore be influenced by the human side of its business to a greater degree. The increas- ing human, social, and environmental responsibilities can be discharged by improving the miner's equip- ment; by learning to look at situations through the eyes of all those involved; by developing common `languages' which governments and the public can understand; and by mediating where feasible on the international scene.

These vary from complex textural problems in the lead-zinc concentrator and their subsequent effect on grinding and flotation to scheduling of converter slag treatment in a chalcopyrite concentrator. Opinions vary widely within the community on what are legitimate environmental social respon- sibilities. The extreme conservationists see the responsibility as the total preservation of the natural environment achieved by opposition to all forms of industrial development that would disturb it. The `growth-at-any-price men' consider it more important to stimulate economic growth, develop new industries, and maximize profit letting the environment take care of itself: within this wide spectrum of concern are the middle-of- the-road men, part of the vast majority, fully aware of the need to compromise to achieve a satisfactory economic growth rate whilst pre- serving to the greatest extent practicable the con- ditions upon which we depend for a balanced self-perpetuating existence. Environmental change is not new. It is the inevitable accompaniment of human activity. Plato wrote in the 5th Century B.C.* of the devastating changes wrought by man and his animals on the ancient world of the Mediter- ranean. Down through the ages rural development to *The Dialogues of Plato: `What are now her moun- tains were lofty, soil-clad hills; her so-called shingle plains of the present day were full of rich soil; and her mountains were heavily afforested-a fact of which there are still visible traces.
