The tunnel alignments investigated for the Gosford Regional Sewerage Scheme are located in the Terrigal Formation and are covered for most of their length by a thick blanket of soil and weathered rock. The following techniques were found to be most effective in geotechnical investigations for tunnelling in this area: air-photo interpretation, seismic surveys to pinpoint drilling targets, in-situ measurements of strength,deformation modulus and permeability in cored holes, and the construction of rock- mass models. Cross-hole seismic modulus measurements, surface resistivity soundings and electric well-logging techniques were found to have limited applicability due to adverse local conditions.

To reduce the corrosion of a stainless steel crystallizer, caused by accumulation of chloride impurity in the liquor during the crystallization of ammonium sulphate, a strongly basic anion exchange resin in the sulphate form may be used to remove the chloride from the liquor. The spent resin may be regenerated with dilute ammonium sulphate.The ions involved are sorbed by the resin in the order Equation 1. The sorption of chloride from the liquor and the regeneration of the resin depend upon the effect of concentration on the formation of the the ion pair NH6SO4. The sulphate ion dominates sorption from dilute solution of ammonium sulphate containing minor amounts of choride; choride ion dominates sorption from concentrated solution.

Mt. Whaleback is in the Pilbara region of Western Australia approximately 1200 kilometers north of Perth, the State capital. In this deposit the Mt. Newman Joint Venturers are mining ore reserves totalling 1500 million tonnes of high grade hematite averaging 64.0% Fe. In addition to Mt. Whaleback, 38 ore bodies have so far been identified outside Mt. Whaleback on the Company's remaining 75,000 hectares of lease area. These ore bodies contain major tonnages of iron ore. Extraction at present is planned at a rate of 37 million tonnes per annum at an ore-to-waste ratio of approximately 1 to 1.4. The ore is railed north to Port Hedland on the Indian Ocean where the different products are screened, crushed and blended prior to shipping. The purpose of this paper is to acquaint the reader with the facilities installed in the Mt. Newman operation to form a background to the sampling techniques employed, describe the precisions which were achieved in experiments conducted February through June, 1976 and also to assess the degree of blending which takes place during the various processes and to put a quantitative measure to the degree of blending. In the exploration of an area proposed for the establishment of an underground colliery, consideration of all land and mining titles and consents has early priority. Environmental aspects have become more meaningful. Preliminary assessments of previous geological knowledge, together with new geological and geophysical data from surface investigations, condition the decision to proceed with costly diamond drilling programmes. Methods other than fully cored diamond drilling have a useful application in appropriate circumstances. Drilling exploration is conducted in stages of increasing density of-hole spacing to the point where, with holes at 1 km centres, reserves are categorized as measured. The programme is subject to constant review in the light of market changes.

The kinetics of chlorination of alumina and bauxite with CO/CI2 mixtures were studied in the range 300-1100°C. The temperature of prior calcination is critical in determining the reaction rates. An optimum chlorination temperature in the range 600°C-750°C was demonstrated such that there is no increase in reaction rates with increasing temperature. This lack of rate sensitivity to rising temperature is largely a function of the influence of gaseous diffusion gradients in the porous alumina together with a progressive decrease in surface area.

Since the discovery of coal of the Southern coalfield (Illawarra 1797, Burragorang 1806) coal mining has grown progressively to the thriving industry of today. Early shallow escarpment mining required no serious access development, but with extension of mining to further and deeper areas, sinking became necess- ary. Now, with 17 major shafts and 7 decline drifts in current use, new mining activities involve several current sinking and drifting projects, with more in prospect. Conventional sinking and drifting, using blasting and mucking techniques proven in recent years are normally in use, with attempts, recent and current to accelerate advances by boring techniques. With export and to less extent local market unpredictability, it is vital to produce mine establishment times to allow advantage to be taken of market upswings and there is great need for research and improvement of mine access construction as the major aspect of establish- ment.

The importance of proper planning, preparation, and execution of a steady state sampling campaign for metallurgical plant assessment must not be underestimated. Careful planning can increase the amount and reliability of information from an optimum number of samples and fully utilize available plant data. It requires specification of the data required, determination of run duration sampling frequency, the selection, modification and testing of sample points and cutters, as well as organisation and briefing of plant and sampling personnel. Preparation immediately prior to sampling, the conduct of the sampling campaign itself and procedures to handle the collected samples and information are discussed. Cutter design, fabrication and use are described in detail, and typical sampling situations, for ball mills, classifiers, pipes, launders, flotation cells and thickeners are considered individually. Measurement of pulp flow rate can often resolve difficult mass balance problems, and discussion of convenient techniques is included.

One of the responsibilities of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works is to provide a sewerage system for the metropolis of Melbourne which now contains over 2.5 million people. In providing this sewerage system it was necessary for the Board to embark on a large tunnelling programme some 20 years ago. As a result of this extensive tunnel construction programme, tunnel boring machines and shaft sinking methods have been developed to cope with the soft ground and soft to medium rock found in the southern and eastern areas of Melbourne where the majority of the recent tunnelling has been carried out. While in the last few years radical changes in construction methods have not been made, development has continued and improvements have been made, which have enabled the Board to extend the limits of the ground conditions in which it can efficiently construct shafts and also tunnels with boring Machines.

During this time some problems of general interest have been overcome, particularly in the area of autogenous grinding in large mills and in pump- ing solids over long distances. The plant flow sheet and equipment at Savage River and the control techniques are. described. Ore type has varied widely over the per- iod of plant operation. Over the last ten years at Risdon, zinc production capacity has almost doubled. This has resulted in modifications, many of which have affected zinc deposition operating conditions in the cells. Some of these changes appeared to have affected average current efficiency to such an extent that a special investigation was initiated, using multiple regression analysis to assess historic cell unit operating para- meters. The study highlighted the importance of certain parameters in maintaining maximum current efficiency for zinc deposition from !Risdon purified solutions under conditions of !changing current density, acidity and zinc con- centrations. Maximum current efficiency was obtained only within a zinc to acid ratio in cell electrolyte of 0.45 - 0.55 and a residual zinc concentration greater than 48 g.1-1, irrespective of actual zinc concentration or The investigation also established: ieters giving minimum power consumption at termined current density; the effect of ntration changes in common impurities on nt efficiency; the existence of high s of some impurities in solids precipit- in the cells and pure solution tanks.

The energy crisis and the general increase in fuel prices have changed the position of coal in the world. Countries need to review their policies on coal, depending on available reserves and their accessibility. On the demand side, a distinction should be made between the steel industry's specific demand for coking coal and the needs of power stations where coal is used in competition with other sources of energy. Coal consumption in these two sectors is expected to increase considerably over the foreseable future. Some countries have sufficient coal of their own to meet this increased demand but others will have to rely on imports. As a result, the tonnage of coal transported by sea may double by 1985. The coal industry lacks flexibility. The opening of new mines and the construction of a transport system to ship the coal takes time. This time-lag, coupled with the enormous expenditure involved, makes long-term contracts between producers and consumers essential.

Neutralization with lime is a simple, cheap, and effective means of treating acid raffinates from uranium processing to' raise the pH, reduce the concentrations of dissolved salts (including heavy metal impurities), and remove amine by adsorption. Two-stage neutralization, using limestone in the first stage at approximately pH 4 and lime in the second, lIlay be advantageous.Lime neutralization of mffinates in the pH range 7 to 8· 5 generally reduced the radium ·concentration to 10 to 200 pCi 1-1, but ·there was considerable scatter in the experimental data. The radium concentration was further reduced to less than 3 pCi 1-1 by co-precipitation of barium (radium) sulphate with 10 mg Ba (as barium chloride) per litre of raffinate. Adsorption of radium on barytes was -also effective in reducing the radium concentration in neutralized raffinate to less than 3 pCi 1-1.The radium concentration of pit water was readily reduced to less than 3 pCi 1-1 when pit water containing 0·01 M sulphate as ammonium, calcium, or sodium sulphate was treated with 20 mg Ba per litre of pit water.Adsorption on barytes was also effective in removing radium from pit water containing 0·03 M sulphate.

The first stage in process design for coal preparation is a study of the coal seam and its associated features followed by an examination of the mining method to.be employed and the coal market requirements. Normally benefication is based upon the differences in relative densities of the coal constituents and asso- ciated ash forming components. Since initial liberation is obtained at a relatively large particle size, the size to which coal is crushed is more subject to the market requirements than to liberation studies. It is possible to estimate energy requirements for comminution and recoveries and product grades can be cal- culated following the interpretation of standard laboratory tests. Numerous units are available for the separation and concentration of the components of run of mine coal in- cluding jigging, dense media separators, and for the finer particle size fractions, flowing film separators, dense media cyclones and froth flotation.

Following a summary of the development of a BF model using aerodynamic relationship and bulk fines index a blast furnace policy model is presented complete with the development of nomograms and featuring production rate, oil rate and total fuel rate. Application of the blast furnace model is then illustrated using No. 5 Port Talbot as an example. It is also shown how the policy model assists in ore allocation in the British Steel Corporation. Further developments which have recently occurred in the correlation between the bulk fines index and the permeability coefficient are detailed and a comparison made with a number of furnaces operated elsewhere. The implications of the comparisons made are that high driving rates are possible with burden containing a high proportion of sinter only if the burden behaviour in the lower parts of the furnace permits high driving rates with a steady gas distribution and low pressure drop. It is concluded that the value of a simple set of equations resulting from the model assisted furnace operators to pin-point likely causes of failure to reach or sustain target production rates.

The dynamic response of holdup in a continuous ball mill has a direct influence on the rate function of grinding kinetics and is useful for predicting the variation in the size distribution of the finished product with time.A model was proposed involving three interacting, completely mixed chambers and this was used to derive analytically the transfer function of the system, from which the unit impulse response and the unit step response of the holdup with feed rate were obtained.The theory was confirmed by comparing it with previously published experimental data for the residence time distribution of particles passing through a ball mill.

In recent years there have been a number of excellent towns built for mining communities in remote parts of Australia. Planning has been thorough, and very large capital expenditures have been made by companies to provide high standards of accommodation, services and amenities. But so often the phrase 'company town' comes to be applied, expressing the frustrations of the residents, working for a single employer who dominates their lives, and of the company, which would prefer not to have to build and operate a town. The much-vaunted early success of some iron ore, bauxite and coal projects has led to a belief that the success of all mining projects is assured. Those holding this belief ignore the vagaries of mineral deposits and of markets, and the need to amortise large high-risk capital expenditures, much of which is spent on social and industrial infrastruc- ture. A real Dorothy Dix title has been selec- ted for this paper. It has the advantage, however, of being capable of being interpreted in many different ways and hence I can select my own approach. You probably are thinking that this topic would be more appropriately handled by an Accountant. I wish to make it clear at the outset that I am not skilled in the sometimes mysterious ways of Accountants - likewise that profession frequently has difficulty in pinning down economists. We have our own strange ideas about profits, marginal efficiencies, cost/benefit analysis etc. What follows is in the main a mixture of two disciplines, probably in a form that few of the purists from either side would accept. Nor do I expect the reader to accept my own prejudices. The paper is designed to stimulate thought and discussion'on the subject. Emotive words such as "profit" and "loss" make for wide differences of opinion. At the time of writing there is a surprising degree of acceptance of the viewpoint that profits in Australia are too low and one is tempted to make this point of near agreement a starting Point.

When zinc is electrowon from concentrates or residues of high manganese content, the zinc sulphate electrolyte may contain high levels of manganese. The manganese level is usually controlled by removal of manganese at the anode as the dioxide during the zinc electrodeposition stage.By increasing the temperature of an electrolyte containing 8 gll manganese from 35°C to 90°C, decreasing the acidity from 100 gll to 30 gll, reducing the current density from 432.A.m-2 t6 286 A.m-2 and using new lead anodes containing over 0·75 per cent silver, the current efficiency for manganese dioxide removal was .increased from less than 1 per cent to over 20 per cent.At the same time the current efficiency for zinc deposition was maintained above 90 per cent by additions of high molecular weight cationic polyacrylamides to the cell. By utilization of these conditions in a small number of cells, the manganese level in the circuit could be economically concrolled to any desired level.With these conditions the formation of the dioxide changes from an indirect route, via Mn04-, to a direct oxidation of Mn2+ to Mn02.The incorporation of impurities such as Pb, K, NH4, Cu, Ni, or Fe makes the deposit unsatisfactory for direct use in Zn - Mn02 dry cells. The deposit structure changes from cryptomelane at low temperature to y3-Mn02 at high temperature.

The importance of communication by management through the organisational hierarchy and procedures instituted to ensure rapid and concise feedback on safety concerns are detailed. The paper also describes the role of the occupational health department and safety committees in assisting management to monitor the safety effort of supervisors and employees. Current safety performance levels are tabled together with details of some aspects of the programme on which safety effort will be concentrated in the future.
