In order to meet the increasing demand for coal for their Newcastle Steel Works, the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd., on June 5, 1937, approved of a scheme to sink a tunnel to the Victoria Seam at their Burwood Colliery. This seam was virgin at this locality and lay nominally horizontal at a depth of 320ft. vertical from the surface.For the purpose of despatch of the coal produced it was decided that the tunnel be equipped with a rubber belt conveyor system.This was a comparatively new departure in Australia, and, indeed, was one of the first installations of its kind in the world, designed to raise coal from considerable depth by this means. Later the tunnel was extended to the Borehole Seam, which lay nominally horizontal at a vertical depth of 600ft. from the surface. The whole installation is the subject of this paper.In planning a project of this kind, consideration had to be given to the following:-1. Location of tunnel with regard to existing surface railway sidings and shafts.2. Ultimate tonnage required.3. Width and construction of belt.4. Speed of belt.5. Inclination of belts.6. The island chains of the Western Pacific (Fig. 1), on account of their related origin, and the similarity of the rocks that compose them, constitute in the main a most homogeneous mineral province. They lie in a complex "mobile" zone of the earth's crust, that formed a geosynclinal area separating the continental margins of Australia and South-Eastern Asia (the so-called Sundaland) from each other, and from the margin of the Pacific Ocean proper (FIg. 2). The whole region was drowned at the close of the Ice Age, as a result of the rise of sea-level that accompanied the melting of the great ice caps in the polar regions, leaving only the higher portions as islands and peninsulas, many of them separated only by shallow seas or "shelves."The geosyncline was infilled with Mesozoic and Tertiary sediments that have undergone varying intensities of folding and metamorphism, and has been subject to intermittent periods of volcanic activity, continuing into the present. Midway between the two continental margins there is a narrow belt of pronounced negative gravity anomalies, with an extraordinary S-shaped convolution in the vicinity of the Banda Sea and Celebes, that marks the core of this unstable region. The folding within the "mobile" zonetrends parallel to it, so that the islands in its vicinity, which are regions elevated by folding, are all elongated in the strike direction of the folds. This explains not only the linear shape of Sumatra and Java, but the arc of islands enclosing the Banda Sea, and the peculiar shape of Celebes.Parallel to the belt of negative anomalies, at a close remove from it, is the line of Recent, or active volcanoes, that extends along the whole length of Sumatra and Java...

The paper deals with the taking of soundings in connection with coal mining operations under part of the Pacific Ocean adjoining John Darling Colliery.INTRODUCTIONIn the early days of mining in the Newcastle District there did not appear to be any definite law specifying the limits to which mine workings, other than certain borings, could extend under tidal waters.As time went on, a figure of 120 ft. was fixed as the minimum thickness of strata between the roof of the seam and the sea bottom; beyond this mining operations are disallowed. The laws relating to working coal under tidal waters are as follow:-The minimum width of pillars to be left shall be eight (8) yards and the maximum width of bords or other excavations shall be six (6) yards, but the lessee may at his discretion increase the minimum width of the pillars or decrease the maximum width of the bordsor other excavations so as to increase the general safety.The eight (8) yard pillars shall be left unwrought.In on-road of every pair of Winning-off or leading headings, a bore shall be kept going ten (10) feet in advance for the purpose of foretelling the presence of any fissure, wash-out, open joint, fault, dyke, or otherwise, and all winning-off headings shall be driven atleast one hundred (100) yards in advance of the working bords.The most accurate and trustworthy information shall be obtained by the lessee not only' of the depth and character of the ocean bed, river, lake, or estuary deposit, but also of the strata overlying the coal seam.When working under the ocean, strata shall be bored through and proved a minimum thickness of thirty (30) feet at the face of the leading headings or levels immediately such headings or levels are under the ocean, and...

The paper describes the preparation of new rail guides, removing existing rails, and replacing with new rails in a vertical winding shaft.INTRODUCTIONThe general practice in coal winding shafts is the use of two cages, with one or more decks in which men and materials are raised or lowered. Winding speeds vary according to depth, the type of winding gear, and whether winding is done in downcast or upcast shafts. Each cage occupies a position between the centre and side of the shaft, with a clearance depending on the type of guides used. The function of the guides is to keep the cage in position throughout the entire depth of the shaft. There are three types of guides, two of which are in general use.1. Selected wood of about 6 in. square section, fixed to the side of buntons.2. Solid strand steel made up similarly to that of an ordinary wire rope, suspended from the head frame with weights attached to the lower end.3. Standard T-rail sections fixed to end or side buntons. Of the three types, 2 and 3 are in general use. The satisfactory ventilation of an extensive coal mine is a subject which requires continual attention from all concerned.It must be remembered that a colliery contains many miles of workings, extending in all directions and throughout which noxious gases may be given off either naturally or by oxidation of the coal; fumes from explosives will be produced, dust will be gathered and carried in suspension, and water will be evaporated, producing a high humidity. Hence a considerable quantity of air in movement must be available to provide sufficient oxygen for men and horses, as well as to dilute and sweep away impurities, and maintain a tolerable degree of coolness.To maintain these conditions a modern colliery is divided up from the main ventilation shafts or adits (as the case may be) into a system of main airways, and in the working districts is further subdivided into district splits. To initiate the air movement, large centrifugal fans with a displacement capacity of up to 400,000 cu. ft. of air per minute are installed, generally in drifts off the upcast shaft, or adit, and at the return end of the ventilating circuit. These fans are thus exhausting fans and by producing a region of low density bring the heavier air at the other extremity of the circuit into movement to correct the difference in density, so far as it is not prevented by the frictional resistance of the airways. A flow of air is thus established, and it is obvious that to enable this volume of air to be as great as possible, the frictional resistance of the mine airways should be maintained at the lowest practicable figure. To this end, main airways should be as large as possible, have sides as smooth as practicable, and be straight, any necessary bends being of large radius.REQUIREMENTS OF THE VENTILATION SYSTEMThe New South Wales Coal Mines Regulation Act contains stringent provisions on requirements of the ventilation system. The scope of this paper has been restricted to the manufacture in Australia of seamless steel tubing, as the subject of buttweld tubing has already been dealt with by A. N. Hamilton in a paper delivered before the Institute in 1935.The earliest attempts to produce seamless steel tubes were based on the extrusion of lead piping, a process developed by Thomas Burr in 1820. However, the problems associated with the extrusion of white hot steel had to await the metallurgical knowledge of the twentieth century, and these early attempts were unsuccessful.The years 1840 and 1845 were noteworthy for the introduction of the first practical methods of making seamless steel tubes. In one process, a large circular plate was 'cupped' in a vertical press; in the other, a round steel billet was pierced for its entire length.The product from both these methods was then elongated by repeated reheating and rolling over an internal mandrel, in a circular pass mill.At this juncture, it should be noted that every process developed for the manufacture of seamless steel tubing can be divided into two parts. In the first part of the process, attention is centred on the conversion of the heated bloom into a short, thick-walled, hollow cylindrical forging; this product is then elongated in the second section of the process. It will be noted that these two sections are actually quite distinct, and in practice numerous methods exist for carrying out both functions. The first stage is generally referred to as 'piercing', the second stage being termed 'elongating.' In this paper, the author proposes to outline the various methods adopted for piercing and elongating; the reader is asked to note that although certain methods of piercing are almost invariably associated with only one method of elongating, the distinction between the two functions is, nevertheless, a vital one and should be noted accordingly.

This is the second of a series of papers dealing with Geology in Exploration. The first, published by the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Proceedings Nos. 143-144, 1946, was written as an introduction to the subject and employed the exploration geology of the Cobar field to illustrate the prospect thinking. This paper will be concerned with the problem of ore repetition in depth and borrow its- example from the Mount Lyell copper field. The writing will be taken up altogether by the example. Nevertheless the intention remains to develop the subject in terms of its wide interest and application.The Mount Lyell field possesses large actual and prospective resources within, and in the vicinity of, the known deposits. This paper does not bear at all on these accessible ore reserves and tangible prospects. There is also in this area evidence of deep ore. The possibility is of little practical interest at present. But the picture of ore repetition, exemplified by the Mount Lyell field, does matter now to the outlook on exploration in this country. For once this essential feature of ore occurrence is widely understood there may develop, on the scale warranted, the search for major deposits which do not outcrop but which are still at shallow depths because of the part erosion plays in this story of concealment and exposure of ore. Also there is the chance in some fields (including Mount Lyell) of a second harvest of orebodies within mineable depths. This exploration goal, introduced in the first paper, will appear more clearly as the Geology in Exploration series is written up. Here the concern is to show the character of the geological evidence which points to the occurrence and recurrence of ore in the earth's crust, the picture at the foundation of this exploration scheme. Consideration of the Establishment o£ a Central Testing or Proving Station.HISTORICAL.Since the introduction of improved high air pressure drilling machines in the early part of the century, efforts have been made to develop the quality of the rock drill bit, in order to take advantage of the greater increase of power output per unit weight of the machines (1). This resulted in the change from solid to hollow steel in the second decade of the present century (2).As the greatest sufferers from the dread disease of silicosis (3), it seemed appropriate that the South African gold mines should be the first to use hollow drill steel. Since then solid drills have become practically obsolete for mining purposes.Water is used with hollow steel drills not only to keep the cutting end cool, but also to assist in preventing the formation of undue dust during drilling. It is of interest to note, however, that water fed through hollow steel or sprayed into the air is only partially effective in removing fine dust particles a few microns in diameter, which particles are said to be the most potent in producing silicosis (3a).So far as the composition of "straight" carbon steel drills is concerned, a commission appointed by the Johannesburg mines carried out a very exhaustive series of tests on drill steels.These drills were manufactured from steel made by all the standard methods, including Swedish, Bessemer, crucible, openhearth, and, to a limited extent, electric furnace steel. It should be remembered that the commissioners' report was issued in 1913, when hollow drill steel had not yet been introduced. Only solid steel drills were then in use.

The history of the reduction of iron from its ores is lost in antiquity. Archreologists state that man has practised it for over four thousand years. Until comparatively recent times charcoal was the principal reducing agent for making metallic iron from its various oxidised ores. Coke was first used by iron founders in England in 1619, and its use spread gradually throughout the civilised world from then onwards. Indeed, the destruction of forests to obtain the requisite charcoal made the iron founders, both in England and America, extremely unpopular, and this hampered the iron industry to a considerable extent, until coal provided the metallurgist with a new and better fuel--coke which is used by most pyro-metallurgists today. The transition from wood to coal products for iron smelting had a profound effect on the location of iron works. Particularly was this the case in America where, in the infancy of the industry, practically each of the early States had its own iron producers, but as coal and coke replaced charcoal, there came about a concentration of the iron and steel industry around the coking coal deposits, and so today there are huge steel plants clustered around the soft coal basins in Pennsylvania and Illinois.The development of the iron and steel industry in Australia, which is comparatively recent by world standards, has been cradled in the coal basins of New South Wales. The first steel works of any consequence in this country were built near Lithgow, close by the mines which produced the coal for coking.Incidentally, these works were rather unique in that the three essential materials for iron and steel manufacture-ore, coal, and limestone-were found virtually at the works' back door.When, in 1912, the location of the proposed steel works for The Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd. for smelting ore from Iron Knob in South Australia was considered, the site ultimately chosen was at Newcastle, almost on top of seams of satisfactory coking coal. One of the major factors which had determined the site of the steel works was the fact that, about 1912, three tons of coal were required to produce one ton of finished steel product, and the relative economics of ore and coal haulage were much in favour of bringing ore to the coal.

A pillar 'is a block of coal left in the first working of a coal seam for the purpose of supporting the superincumbent strata in such a manner that the winning out roadways will be safe to traverse by men and by the coal transport system.PRINCIPLES OF PILLAR EXTRACTION.The size of a pillar is chiefly dependent on the depth of cover, and in a lesser degree on the nature of the coal, or the condition in which the seam has been laid down. In a seam at 1,100ft. depth of cover, and assuming a spec'ific gravity of 2.5 overall for the cover strata, a pressure of 1,200lb. per sq. in. is the loading on the top surface of the coal seam before mining begins.When mining commences, and as the pillars are formed, an increased load is imposed on the coal left in the pillars, according to the percentage of coal extracted in the first working. Thus, if 25% extraction is taken in the first working, the load on the pillars is theoretically increased from 1,200lb. per sq. in. to 1,600lb. per sq. in. over the area mined. If this state of things went on indefinitely it would not be possible wholly to extract a pillar because of the extreme pressure tliat would be thrown on the diminishing portion; but, fortunately, another element, that of time, enters into and assists the process of extraction.If the superimposed strata were of an entirely plastic nature, this time factor could not operate, as the cover weight would settle instantly on the remaining portion of the p'illar and finally overwhelm it. The cover strata above a pillar generally have a certain rigidity which does not allow the superimposed weight to settle instantly on the pillar fraction, and it requires a period of time to elapse before the extra weight is felt by the pillar.The time factor varies widely, and is governed entirely by local conditions; it can only be determined by experience gained on the spot or in close proximity to the area of operations. It is dependent on the strength of the strata and its characteristics under bridging conditions.It is, therefore, logical to assume that the more rapidly a pillar can be extracted the greater will be the safety factor and also the percentage of recovery of coal.Up to the present time, the operation of the extraction of pillars in this country has been, with a few exceptions, a manual one, and before mechanization of Collieries can be fully accomplished, the process will have to be performed mecharrically.

The following is a brief summary of the Bulli Colliery and its method of operation when Australian Iron and Steel Ltd. took control.Bulli Colliery is situated about a mile west of the village of Bulli and is some 10 mUes north of the Australian Iron and Steel Company's Steelworks at Port Kembla.The mine is owned by Australian Iron and Steel Limited, who purchased it in 1936 from the liquidators of Bulli Colliery and Coke Works.It is one of the oldest working coal mines in Australia, having been opened about 1858 and has worked more or less continuously since that date.The seam worked is the No. 1, or Bulli, Seam, which outcrops along the escarpment of the Illawarra Range and is generally operated by tunnels, the portal at Bulli being some 440ft. above sea level.The colliery holding is fairly extensive, but the coal seam over a large portion of the area within two miles of the outcrop has been more or less destroyed by an intrusion of basalt.At present there is no coal being worked within a distance of about 21 miles from the surface, the farthest workings being about four miles from the tunnel mouth.The existing main haulage road, for the first two miles from the portal, is not straight; it is very narrow over fairly long stretches and has many changes of grade varying from 3% in favour of the load to 13% against the load.The dumping station and screens are situated close to the portal of the haulage tunnel, and at this point the coal is loaded into railway hopper waggons, which are then hauled by rope to the top of a self-acting incline. The waggons are lowered down the incline, a distance of approximately! mile, the ruling grade being about 18 %.From the bottom of the incline, waggons are hauled by Company's steam locomotive to exchange sidings from whence they are taken by New South Wales Government Railway engine to the Company's Steelworks at Port Kembla.

Efficient roof control in colliery operation is a factor that must be maintained for· the maximum reQovery and economic extraction of the mineral. It must be carefully considered in each of the following stages in the life of a mine.1. The primary development and the first working of the mine.2. The maintenance of access roads, intake and return airways.3. The extraction of pillars.FACTORS IN ROOF CONTROLThe main objects of roof control are: The support of the roof in working places, the relief of roof pressure from the workings during pillar extraction, and in some instances the prevention of subsidence of the surface.The support of the roof during development operations and first working, and the subsequent maintenance of these is influenced by:-1. The depth of the seam below the surface.2. The thickness of the seam.3. The dip of the seam.4. The condition of the roof and floor.5. The method of extraction-mechanical or by hand.6. The method of. working-Iongwall or bord and pillar.7. The availability of material.As a general rule, the pressure exerted by the superincumbent strata may be taken as one pound per square inch for each foot of cover, and the crushing strength of coal as 1,500 to 2,000 lb. per square inch; this, of course, varies, but from these figures it may be assumed that seams below 2,000ft. in depth are liable to crush. If any part of the seam is removed, added weight is thrown onto the remaining coal. It is therefpre essential that for effective working this extra weight must be removed or supported as soon as possible.The outstanding principle in the support of mining excavations is to ensure that the supports are set as soon as possible after the natural support has been removed.Where a system of bord and pillar is applied, the early setting of supports reduces the extent to which the roof bends, thereby reducing the liability to ·tension fractures at the centre of the road.

This work was instituted to investigate the microscopic structure of brown coals by means of microtome sections cut from them. It was found to be essential to impregnate the coal with some material prior to cutting, because of its powdery and crumbly nature. Of a number of impregnating materials tried, e.g., glycerine gum, gelatine, by far the most satisfactory was paraffin wax. Samples of brown coals for section cutting must be moist. When obtained, they should be put immediately into air-tight tins, and, if they are not to be used for some time, it is desirable to keep them under water containing a small amount of formalin. If the sample is allowed to dry in air, it becomes too hard to be cut. It cannot be softened again even by prolonged soaking in water.PREPARATION OF COALSmall rectangular, blocks were cut from the sample with a chisel and a strong scalpel. The largest block prepared was 3·2 x 2·5 x 0·6 cm. The faces of the block from which sections were to be cut were approximately levelled before treatment. The block was then painted carefully on all sides with two coats of warm aqueous agar, approximately 2 %. This prevented crumbling and breakage of the block during treatment. When the agar was set, the block was placed in water, and all the air removed with a vacuum pump. The water was replaced first by alcohol, then by chloroform, by the usual step transference of a series of liquids, in each of which the block was placed for 24 hours: Ethanol %, 10, 20, 30, 50, 70, 85, 95, 100 (three changes); Ethanol-chloroform, 3: 1, 1: 1, 1 : 3, chloroform pure (three changes) '. The man in the street (and no doubt most members of the Institute) thinks of wire, if he gives it any thought at all, as a most commonplace commodity. It is an accepted necessity, and like most necessities is taken for granted, unless a shortage in one or other of its multitudinous forms or products causes inconvenience.For many years Australia has ·been a large consumer of wire, particularly for fencing. With the rapid development of secondary industry the demand has increased in both size and character until at the present time much of the wire produced in this country is used as raw material for subsequent manufacturing processes. The call has been of so varied a nature that the Newcastle Wire Mills now turn out a greater variety of wire types than any other single plant in the world.In this paper, the aim is to provide a picture of the manufacturing, properties, and uses of wire. No attempt is made to cover the subject in any detail, as the field is much too broad for anything other than general treatment. Many phases, particularly in regard to manufacturing processes, are, therefore, dealt with cursorily, but it is hoped that the paper will, without delving too deeply into the technical aspects of Wire production, give a general appreciation of:- (a) How steel wire is made. (b) The remarkable physical characteristics obtained by judicious combination of chemical composition, heat treatment, and subsequent cold work. (c) The uses of steel wire.HISTORY.Best known of the early references to wire is that appearing in Exodus, where mention is made of gold wire being used for the sacerdotal robes of Aaron. However, the period in question, about B.O. 1491, is comparatively modern history as far as wire is concerned, for specimens believed to have been made about B.O. 4600 have been found. Shortly after the outbreak of war in September, 1939, it became apparent that considerable quantities of certain metals and alloys which at that time were not being produced in Australia would be required in increasing amounts for the prosecution of the war effort.Australian industry had relied on overseas sources of supply for the relatively small quantities of many special metals which were needed under peacetime conditions. As the war progressed so great became the demand for mooy of these alloys in Great Britain and other allied countries that it was necessary for them to place an embargo on the export of these materials, and thus it soon became evident that if Australia's production of munitions was to expand and develop it would be necessary for her to become independent of overseas sources for many of these essential 'items. The shipping position also became very acute, and this, accentuated the difficulties of obtaining these alloys. Because of the conditions outlined aqove, the manufacture of over thirty different metals and alloys .was undertaken at Newcastle during the past decade. It is with two of these that this paper proposes to deal. They are tungsten powder and ferro-silicon.TUNGSTEN POWDERTungsten is a rare and comparatively new metal. It is used extensively in the production of high speed tool steel, some grades of which contain up to 22% tungsten. Such articles as twist drills, reamers, milling cutters, and lathe tools are made from tool steel, and the demand for these during the war years was greater than ever before. The use of tungsten in the manufacture of high speed steel was first developed in 1914 by the Germans, and when it was discovered that they were using tungsten bearing steel for the production of munitions there began a world-wide search for ores of this rare metal.

A chemical study of the petrographic components of Greta (Maitland) coal, carried out by the Metropolitan Gas Co. (Melbourne), has revealed an anomaly in the composition of the durain which was thought to warrant petrological investigation.The original study, by the Metropolitan Gas Co., extended over eight shipments of coal received during the winter of 1943.The percentages of the several petrographic components were eslimated by careful handpicking of large samples of each shipment, and analyses were made of the handpicked components, which were also tested as to their gas-making and coking properties.The results are summarised in Tables 1 and 2. At first sight the components of the Greta coal bear a general resemblance in composition to those of other bituminous coals of similar rank, apart from a notable richness in volatiles, which is a distinctive feature of Greta coal. The durain has a typically higher ash content, and lower volatile content than the clarain (Table 1); and the coking behaviour of the four components is typical (Fig. 4).When, however, the analyses of Table 1 are re-calculated on a dry, ash-free basis, an anomaly appears: the clarain and the durain, on this 'pure coal' basis, have practically identical compositions, with the durain containing a slightly higher proportion of volatiles than the clarain (cf. Table 3); but the tar yield of these two components is very different (Table 1). Re-calculated on a dry, ash-free basis, the yield from the clarain is 18.9 gallons of tar per ton, while, that of the durain is 29.0 gallons per ton. The gas derived from the durain is correspondingly richer in illuminants (CH etc) and poorer in hydrogen than that from the clarain (Table 2), and is also notably richer in nitrogen.That the composition of the Greta durain is consistent is proved by the analyses of Table 3, in which the compositions of the respective durains and clarains of eight separate shipments of coal are compared. In most bituminous coals, the durain contains several per cent less volatile matter than the associated clarain, and high volatile content in a durain usually indicates a durain rich in spores.

The subject of steel wire ropes covers such a wide range of points that it would be impossible to deal with it fully in one paper, and in view of the apparent scarcity of published information on the subject it is proposed in this paper to deal with those items which should give the mining engineer a better understanding of the basic factors which affect the design.selection, and use of ropes. The matter will be considered under the following headings:-1. Brief history of steel wire rope-making.2. Rope-making terms.3. Wire rope materials.4. Characteristics affecting economy, operating life, and serviceability of a rope.5. Properties of construction of rope, and stresses met with in wire ropes.6. Drum and sheave sizes and sheave bearing pressures.7. Storage, handling, and maintenance of ropes in service.8. Common factors affecting rope life, particularly winding and haulage ropes.9. Inspection of ropes.GENERALWire rope, which was invented for, and first applied to mine winding, has become an indispensable aUXiliary throughout the whole field of mining, be it for underground, open cut, or dredge work, as well as the requirements of transport and treatment of ores.Though wire ropes appear simple collections of wire and fibre, the demands made upon them are many, and the stresses and abuses to which they are exposed in service are varying, and often of serious dimensions.The exposition of these stresses and abuses, particularly dynamic stressing, corrosion, etc., all of which seriously affect the safety and economical life of the ropes, is often enough to frighten most practising mine staffs, who are aware that before the requirements of economic operation stands the still more important question of safety in mining.

Although developed primarily for sintering tantalum, the unit to be described can be used to heat-treat metals in the form ofa bar, wire or strip, by passing a current through them. The upper temperature limit with this type of heating is the melting point of the metal being heated.The unit was designed for vacuum work, but. various gases can be used if required.Briefly, the vacuum sintering furnace consists of a bell which is counter-balanced and may be lowered onto the brass base plate which holds the electrodes. A rubber ring seal is used for vacuum work. The lower flexible grips are bolted to the brass base plate which is at earth 'potential, while the other electrode passes through the plate by way of an electrically insulated vacuum seal. This upper electrode, the height of which can be altered as desired, the lower grips, and the bell are water cooled. The vacuum line to the pumps and a line to the vacuum gauges also lead from the base plate. The more important sections of the unit are described below.THE BELLThe unit was designed so that the bell could be lifted clear of the base plate and the electrodes, thus facilitating adjustment of the latter and the mounting of the specimen to be heated.
