North Broken Hill Limited came into prominence as a producing mine at· the commencement of the present century, when a great many of the disabilities experienced in earlier mining operations th:rough lack of adequate stope filling had been overcome.The northern or narrower ore-body was first mined in the upper levels and, in the early stages, no great difficulty in mining was experienced. In depth, under the influence of its northerly pitch,. the wide southern ore-body entered the North mine between the 400 and 500-ft. levels. Owing to its flat dip and the relatively weak nature of the hanging wall and footwall, the value of close filling was recognized and this policy has been followed throughout the life of the mine. This feature undoubtedly contributed to the freedomfrom "creep" action to which some of the older mines had been subjected.The Broken Hill lead-zinc-silver ore-bodies occur as well defined replacements of favou:rable horizons, in intensely folded Pre-Cambrian sedimentaries. In the North mine two main replacement zones occur, the Gre being found where the beds are involved in a certain set of minor folds. The resulting ore-bodies are roughly elliptical in cross-section, the long axis of one being north-east of, and somewhat offset from the long axis of the other. The ore-bodies pitch eastwards at 40° and dip northwards at 60° in a fairly regularmanner. The southern Ore-body has an average length of 700 feet and an average width of 90 feet with a maximum width of 230 feet, whilst the nonhern ore-body on the lower levels averages 500 feet long and 40 feet wide.

The purpose of this paper is to outline the main points in the construction of the various types of wire ropes more commonly used for winding in Australia; and the maintenance of the ropes, and cage and skip safety gear as practised at the South mine, Broken Hill.It should be mentioned that both of the shafts at present in use are dry, and both downcast with or without the assistance of the two exhaust fans normally in use: Night shift and week.-end overtime are practicaly non-existent.Thus, during night shift, the cages in No. 7 shaft are landed on the chairs at the surface, providing efficient covers for the· shaft, and allowing the maximum amount of rope to be wound on to the drums. This also applies to the cages of both No. 7 and No. 4 shafts during the week-ends.These factors, combined with electric winding and skip haulage, are calculated to obtain the best use of the ropes when properly attended.WINDING ROPES-TYPE AND CONSTRUCTIONThese ropes may be divided into four main types which will include the more commonly used constructions(a) One-size strand.(b) Warrington strand.(c) Flattened strand.(d) Locked coil.1. One-size strand as the name implies, is a rope the strands of which are constructed 9f wire of the one size.Usually the strands are of 7, 19 or 37 wires.

For many years the mining industry at Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia, was carried on with just sufficient attention to underground ventilation and hygiene conditions as to keep pace with necessity. However, the campaign against industrial diseases in other mining centres (notably South Africa) some years ago, brought the subject more prominently before local mining engineers.Throughout a period of several years, gradual improvement has been effected, and at the present time industrial hygiene is considered an essential part of the production operations of the various companies.In June, 1918, a move was first made by the Board of Trade advising an inquiry respecting the health of employees engaged in the metalliferous mining industry in the State of New South Wales. At the end of that year, a recommendation was made to the State Government by the Board of Trade that a Techni.cal Commission of Inquiry be appointed to examine and report upon the dust conditions of the metalliferous mines at Broken Hill. Following this a second report presented in 1919 made specific recommendations in respect to the scope of such a Commission. A Technical Commission of Inquiry was accordingly appointed and arrived in Broken Hill to inquire into the prevalence of miner's phthisis and pneumonoconiosis in the mines. Early in March, 1920, the examination of all mine employees commenced, and the work was completed in June, 1920. During the extensive research which has been conducted in the Metallurgy Department of the University of Melbourne, into the properties of lead and its dilute alloys, the Brinell test has been used for the determination of hardness.The work described herein represents part of an investigation into the influence of various factors on such determinations, particularly when carried out on different qualities of "pure" lead. It is intended to publish the more theoretical and controversial aspects of this research elsewhere.MATERIALS USED AND THEIR PREPARATION FOR TESTINGThe tests to be reported have been conducted on a specially pure electrolytic lead, and several brands of commercially "pure" lead. The analyses of the samples upon which most of the work has been carried out are given in Table 1.Note: Oxygen was not determined, but from the work of H. W. Worner, in the Rosenhain Memorial Laboratory, it appears probable that it was approximately 0-0003% in all samples.

The, Ore-bodies.-The ore-bodies of the North mine, North Broken Hill Ltd.; consist of two lenses, connected by a narrow neck of mineralized country. They pitch at an angle of 40° in an easterly direction and dip north at 60° to the horizontal. The southern ore-body, on a horizontal plane, has a total maximum length of 800 feet and in one place attains a width of 230 feet, whilst the northern orebody has a maximum'length of 600 feet and a maximum width of 80 feet.

(This paper reviews the reasons for and the principles followed in designing and constructing complete new surface works at the mine of the Zinc Corporation Limited, Broken Hill, New South Wales, and describes the layout, plant, buildings and services.)The Zinc Corporation mine produces high grade lead, silver and zinc sulphide ore. Lead and zinc concentrates are sent by rail to Port Pirie, where the lead is smelted and the zinc concentrate is shipped to Tasmania, England and other overseas countries.Some time ago consideration was given to the advisability of sinking an additional shaft. For some years the old main shaft had been working at full capacity and developments underground had indicated that the mine would eventually be capable of an output greater than that which could be handled through the shaft. It was therefore decided to sink a new main shaft and the site chosen was in footwall country 900 feet south of the old main shaft. The reason for the move south was so that the new shaft would be opposite the centre of gravity of the ore-bodies at depth. The size of the new shaft is 27 ft. ,6 in. x 15 ft., and the work was put in hand early in 1936.It was intended to haul the whole mine output through this shaft, which was 1,600 feet from the mill then operating. An extensive conveyor system thus became necessary unless a new mill was built near the shaft. The scheme of rehabilitation of surface plant commenced in 1936, included the provision of improved and more hygienic changing and bathing facilities for the employees.At that time the Thompson's Shaft section of the British Mine was being prepared for a resumption of operations, and it was decided to repair and re-equip the existing building. Thus any new scheme adopted could be given a thorough trial, and the proved arrangement used as a basis for the contemplated new main changehouse on the North Section.Investigations were carried out to determine the most suitable arrangement for the Thompson's Shaft changehouse, to provide for a total of 120 men, with particular regard to the internal fittings and fixtures. Also, as the mining conditions were such that a large proportion of clothes worn underground by miners, etc., were wet by the end of the shift, the problem of drying these clothes in the availaole time from a man coming off shift to his commencing again some sixteen hours later was one of the most important to be dealt with.The changehouses in use on the North mine section of the lease were provided with racks around the walls for the men to hang their street clothes on, and a section was partitioned off to house the mine clothes and their drying facilities. The actual drying was carried out by means of hanging the wet clothes over racks between which ran pipe coils heated by means of hot water circulated from the hot water boiler supplying the showers.This method had proved to be far from satisfactory for several reasons, the main objections being:-

The smelting of the Broken Hill lead concentrates at the Broken Hill Asso,ciated Smelters produced, among other products, approximately 4,900 ounces of gold and 8,800,000 ounces of silver during the year ending June 30th, 1938. The following table shows the actual amounts of gold per ton of lead concentrate produced during this period at the important mines. The total gold in the period is calculated from the number of tons of lead concentrates produced, and by comparison with the production' of silver, shows thatthere is no constant relation between the amounts of gold and silver.The fact that no gold is seen during milling, even when gravity concentrating tables are employed, signifies that the gold does not occur as occasional coarse particles.Further, as the values increase considerably in the flotation slime, it can be inferred that the gold occurs as minute inclusions in one or more of the minerals in the lead concentrates.The four most abundant minerals in the lead concentrate are galena, zinc blende, chalcopyrite, and...

A large number of experiments have been carried out by many workers on the recrystallization of deformed and subsequently annealed metals and alloys. Although observations on single crystals are of great importance in the study of the recrystallization textures of deformed and annealed metals, very little of this work deals with material in this form.Since, in deformed metals, the stress concentration is greatest at the grain boundaries and along the planes of slipping, it is to be expected that recrystallization will start in these regions. For example, in polycrystalline aluminium (1),:1: (2), copper (3), a-iron (4) and brass (5), (6), which had been deformed by cold-rolling, drawing, pressing or stretching and then annealed, the new grains first appeared in the boundaries of the original crystals, whilst in the case of cupronickel (7) and iron (8), recrystallization commenced along the slip planes of the deformed material. Deformed and annealed single crystals of aluminium (9) and cadmium (10) first start to recrystallize along slip planes and in deformation twins.The present work deals with the process of recrystallization of single crystals of lead after deformatjon by creep.Two factors enter into these experiments that were not met with in other work on this subject. In spite of the many contributions that have been made to our knowledge of the creep properties of polycrystalline lead, the precise influence of various factors on these properties is not yet fully understood. Indeed, the position is such that several important points in connection with the creep of lead are a matter of controversy. This has been brought about largely by the fact that, in the case of lead, the changes that are produced in the creep behaviour by slight variations of such factors as the purity, grain sizeand previous treatment are out of all proportion to the magnitude of these variations.In order to study the fundamental properties of lead as related to creep, and so gain a more enlightened perspective with which to consider the creep of lead in general, the work that is described in a series of papers, of which the present paper is the third part, has been carried out. It deals with lead in the form of single crystals.It has been shown (1) - (3) that the grain boundaries as well as the actual grains play a part in the creep of polycrystalline lead. The present work, by eliminating grain boundaries, enables the. contribution of the grains themselves to the process of creep, in other words, crystalline creep, to be studied effectively.This object was, possibly, the major one in this work.

In the plumbing of vertical shafts the methods employed and equipment used, are generally made to best suit existing conditions. Undoubtedly, there is no method that can be called standard or that can be used with equal ease and success on all shafts. At the Mount Isa Mines Limited property in Northern Queensland, Australia, local conditions have presented no major difficulties to be overcome in shaft plumbing work. In fact, compared to those at many shafts, the problem has been rather simple. There are three vertical shafts connecting main mine workings, with the greatest plumbing depth for any single lift, 350 ft.Other conditions pertaining to plumbing work have been generally normal.The method we have employed is, in principle, similar to the Weisbach orientation method with a variation that does not necessitate damping of the wires to bring them to rest. Although conditions encountered have not been such that damping the wires would have been inconvenient, we feel we have saved much time and eliminated unnecessary...

Every estimate of ore reserves necessarily contains an assumption in regard to the specific gravity of the ore. This assumed figure may be based on experimental data, on textbook data, or on a reconciliation of past tonnage estimates and production figures. Not infrequently it is simply a guess - shrewd or otherwise.Errors in the density factor are not likely to be serious in gold-quartz mines-or, at least, not so serious as in base metal mines. It is to the closer determination of ore density in the latter that this paper is devoted. Moreover, the remarks apply to ores which show no appreciable pore space.Not many ore bodies are sufficiently homogeneous to allow of a truly representative factor being obtained by the simple testing of a few specimens of ore, or by the weighing, after breaking, of a carefully measured block. The empirical figure derived from a comparison of past ore reserves and actual production can never truly describe conditions other than those now past; no real link with ore as yet unmined is provided. The dilution of heavy ore by waste is not exposed by this method, but is effectively cloaked. Anyerrors in past estimations of ore reserves are transmitted, by way of the density factor, as a source of error in all future estimates.ObjectIons may be raised to the practice of weighing measured blocks of ore in the case of any but a very homogeneous ore body. Even then, the exact composition of the block weighed, and an indication of whether its moisture content is representative of the whole, are difficult to determine.

Before presentIng my address I wish to acknowledge the honour which has been conferred on me by my appointment to the position of President of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.It is a matter of great concern to us all to find our Empire at war. I am confident that, as was the case in the war of 1914-1918, members of this Institute and of kindred Institutes and Associations will contribute in full to the Empire's needs and that in the end our cause shall triumph.I think it appropriate that I should take as the subject of my address that of the Broken Hill Lead-Silver-Zinc Industry. The subject matter of this address has been confined to the operations of Mining, Ore Dressing, Lead Smelting and Refining and production of Electrolytic Zinc in Australasia. The review of the Broken Hill Lead-SilverZinc Industry would not, of course, be complete without reference to those Australian industries which trace their origin to the Broken Hill field, but· it is thought that an outline of these industries would make thIs review too extensive.HISTORICALMany efforts have been made to translate the early history of Broken Hill and its subsequent growth throughout the years into one of the wor~d's most famous mining fields in the form of a simple story.

BUCKETT (Lake View and Star Limited) : At the outset I should like to add my congratulations to those already extended to Mr..Norwood on his excellent paper, which has given us all an inspiration to strive further to improve our plant recoveries. In some respects this paper has left us so little to discuss without considerable time spent on. further research work. At all points one is met by a baffling array of facts which leave one feeling hesitant to speak.The careful and methodical way in which Mr. Norwood went along step by step until all channels of research presenting themselves were tested to his own satisfaction leaves me with but a few comments to make. Particularly striking to me is the explanation of the residual gold values in calcines by recrystallization of haematite and here is a line to be attacked by future studies. This will be mentioned again later.Particularizing on the paper, the first point that struck me was the method of change of pyrite through to the final haematite. I have never been able to satisfy myself that a sample taken from various positions along a roaster when cooled, as described on p. 397, represented a fair sample of the conditions at that point, but I must confess that I have not found a substitute that did satisfy me.However, the following figures are illuminating... Technical control in an industrY invariably leads to a basic contribution from the science of chemistry. It is interesting to note. that the change from the "Assay Office" to the "Chemical Laboratory" has already taken place on the majority of progressive mining fields.Although the serlvices of an efficient chemical staff are freely availed of by operating departments, it is not generally realized that practical chemistry is definitely expensive. A great deal of misplaced energy and expense can be involved in an enthusiastic research campaign where a full appreciation of laboratory economics and a balanced sense of analytical values are lacking.In order to supply data to the various departments concerning individual costs, it was decided at the North mine to issue a supplementary sheet concerning laboratory activities.The costs are compiled under the Unit System, which is based on a relative comparison between the total cost of the various determinations. carried out and the number of such determinatiQns converted to an equivalent aggregate of units.The introduction of the system necessitates the initial compiling of a table of relative units for the various estimations carried out on the works. Each laboratory will find it necessary to draw up such a table governed by local conditions, and, as will be anticipated, a relative comparison of the cost for any particular estimation will show a variation on a lead field, a copper field, or a steelworks, etc.This is due, of course, to the predominating type of routine work, cost of landing reagents, frequency of assays, etc. The satisfactory preparation of the Unit Table requires a good knowledge of laboratory procedure.

The final criterion of the payability of gold production must necessarily be the cost per ounce. While the cost per ton or per cubic yard is a convenient comparative measure, and a necessary one for operating control, it is obviously insufficient as a means of judging whether or not, in a given set of circumstances, a gold production operation can be carried out economically.. An alternative method, which brings in the ton or cubic yard as a unit of measurement, is to determine what the cost per ton or per cubic yard is equivalent to, in terms of pennyweights or grains at the ruling price of gold. But this is really only another way of stating that the cost per unit of product is the ultimate measure of profit or loss, and not the cost per unit of input material.It is accordingly of interest to determine the cost per ounce of Australian gold production and to compare it with the cost of gold production in some other parts of the world which are important gold producers. The attached Appendix, which it, is believed comprises practically all Australian mines of any consequence (except Big Bell and the de Bernales group, for which. insufficient information is available), shows this information for financial years ending between 31st December, 1938, and 31st December, 1939, the production of gold dealt with being some 1,084,000 oz., or 66% of the total Australian production for 1939. For comparative purposes the cost of producing gold at representative mines in New Guinea, New Zealand, Fiji, Canada, India, West Africa and Rhodesia, and the average cost of production at the Rand mines, has also been included.It is obviously necessary in a study of this sort that the basis of the cost should be clearly set out and should be as nearly as possible uniform. Ore recovered by North Broken Hill Limited as a result of mining operations at its Broken Hill leases is obtained, at the present scale of working, in the proportions of 80% from the North mine and 20% from the British mine sections, and is composed mainly of a silver bearing, sulphide lead and zinc mineral, in association with the gangue materials mentioned later in the text.The lead-zinc sulphide lode at the North mine is deposited in folds in pre-Cambrian sedimentary schists. These folds pitch north-east at approximately 40° and dip north-west at approximately 60°. In plan the deposit appears as two lenses designated on the mine as the "Southern" and "Northern" ore-bodies.The Southern ore-body yields the main tonnage of crude ore. The sulphide mass here overlies a heavy layer of rhodonite which persists with the pitch of the lode. In the central section of this ore-body the sulphide zone is coarse grained and of high grade with a wide range of minerals in the gangue dilution. Quartz, garnet, ftuorite, rhodonite, and felspar are common, whilst chalcopyrites, pyrites, pyrrhotite and green felspar are often present. The Northern ore-body is dolomitic to siliceous in nature. During the course of the major research in the Metallurgy Department of the University of Melbourne into the creep characteristics of lead and .its dilute alloys, it has been the practice to prepare the majority of test specimens from rolled strip. From time to time during the progress of the work, certain variables involved in. the rolling of the experimental ingots have been investigated. It is proposed to collect together in this paper the results of these experiments. Some general features relating to the type of deformation produced have been discussed in a previous paper.While it is admitted that the conditions prevailing through this work differ' in some respects from those of industrial rolling practice, it is felt that many of the factors investigated have an important practical significance. The following brief observations on the mineral composition of the Mt. Oxide copper ore are intended to supplement the geological description of that ore-body recently published by Blanchard (2).'" The Mt. Oxide copper mine is situated about 45 miles W.N.W. of Dobbyn, in the Cloncurry district of Queensland (Fig. 1). A representative suite of specimens from the mine was obtained through the kindness of Mr. P. B. Nye, Executive Officer of the Aerial, Geological and Geophysical Survey of Northern Australia, and Mr. Jack Hall, the tributor of the Mt. Oxide mine. The specimens, as shown in Fig. 2, were nearly all from the sulphide zone, between the l04-ft. level and the 300-ft. level.
