The Youga gold mine in Burkina Faso, West Africa, is scheduled to produce first gold in the third quarter of calendar 2007. The project is expected to produce 540 000 oz of gold over 6.5 years, from a conventional open pit carbon in leach mine. The direct capital cost of the project is US$47 M. Etruscan Resources Inc, a Canadian based gold exploration and development company, holds 90 per cent of the project company Burkina Mining Company SA (BMC). The state of Burkina Faso is free-carried for the remaining ten per cent of BMC. RMB Resources Limited, of Melbourne Australia, has arranged a US$35 M project finance facility for BMC (the Borrower) as the majority of funding for the Youga project development. The loan facility was provided by RMB Australia Holdings and Macquarie Bank Ltd (the Lenders) each as to 50 per cent in the lending syndicate. The Lenders also provided a gold hedging facility to guarantee a minimum price for the projectÆs gold production. Burkina Faso is a francophone country, part of the Economic and Monetary Union of West Africa (UEMOA). The project financing is the first such facility to be arranged for a mining project in Burkina Faso, with little or no precedent available in other UEMOA countries. Therefore, while the Youga gold project is forecast to be a robust project applying conventional mining and processing methods, a number of legal, technical, commercial and social issues required identification, evaluation and resolution before the loan could be established. This paper describes that evaluation process and the resolution of these issues. In-house experience and expertise in both the LendersÆ and BorrowerÆs teams has facilitated a greater understanding and æownershipÆ of the issues and hence provided comfort with risks which might not normally be taken in conventional project developments and project financings. As a result, blanket external reviews were not required by the Lenders. A long-standing relationship between Etruscan and RMB Resources also facilitated solutions to a number of issues. Nevertheless, a degree of flexibility by the Lenders, the Borrower and Etruscan was required to successfully close the financing.

It is often said in business that if you donÆt have a customer you donÆt have a business. The same rule applies to project evaluation; if you donÆt have customers you really donÆt have a viable project. It is therefore essential that in the early stages of project evaluation the following fundamental questions are addressed: What products will this project produce? Who are the potential customers? What are the customersÆ requirements with respect to grade and impurities? Do they have adequate capacity to take the production from the proposed project? Will the products introduce adverse effects in the customerÆs process circuits? Will additional waste streams requiring disposal be produced? In the past the attitude has been along the lines of the customer will take whatever we produce at the mine site. Times have now changed with customers now operating under much tighter environmental regulation with waste disposal becoming increasingly difficult. It would therefore be prudent that the principles of product stewardship be used as a tool in project evaluation. This paper will provide a general discussion on customer requirements and provide detail on case studies of the impact of mine products on smelter process circuits. It will provide examples where there were synergies between the mine product and the smelter circuit and where the mine product had adverse impacts on smelter performance.

The Intec Copper Process is an environmentally advantageous hydrometallurgical process for the production of high purity copper and associated precious metals from copper sulphide concentrates. The process uses a mixed chloride-bromide lixiviant in an elegant cyclic circuit to leach the copper into solution, rejecting the iron as stable hematite rather than as unstable jarosite. After purification of the pregnant liquor, copper is electrowon at London Metal Exchange Grade A purity, while the anodic energy of the cell is stored as the soluble species, HalexTM, for recycle as the regenerated lixiviant to the leach circuit. Both gold and silver are leached and recovered directly from this cyclic process without resorting to cyanide leaching of the residue. No liquid emissions result from the Intec Copper Process, whilst spent air and water vapour from the leach are released to the atmosphere. The sulphur in the minerals reports to the solids residue in elemental form, without the need for expensive handling of voluminous gaseous sulphur dioxide streams found in smelters. A significant difference to competing smelting and hydrometallurgical processes is that any mercury entering the process from the sulphide concentrate feed is recovered rather than reporting directly to waste or polluting the environment. Outside the process circuit itself, the Intec Copper Process has several notable environmental advantages over competing technologies: Flexibility of scale with low capital and operating costs allow operation directly at the mill head at production rates as low as 15 000 tpa, significantly reducing environmental impacts from concentrates transport. The ability to handle low-grade and dirty concentrates often allows greater recoveries in the mill, improving both the economics and environmental acceptability of a mine by reducing metal losses to tailings. A comparison of the total energy requirements of the Intec Copper Process with those of competing technologies shows that the Intec Copper Process has the lowest energy consumption of any of the known hydrometallurgical processes, as well as improving upon pyrometallurgy under appropriate conditions.

The ultraviolet spectrum of isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate (the principal constituent of Dow flotation collector Z-200) in water and of Z-200 itself in water was found to have an absorption peak at 242 nanometers(nm). The height of this peak was found to be directly proportional to isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate concentrations up to 15 p.p.m. Z-200 contains about 90 per cent isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate and the heightof the peak was proportionately lower, but obeyed the straight line relationship up to 15 p.p.m. This showed the potential value of spectrophotometric measurements for the determination of Z-200 residuals in flotation liquors.Methyl ethyldithiocarbamate (an impurity in Z-200) increased the peak height slightly, but other impurities in Z-200, xanthates, and most inorganic salts present in flotation liquors do not interfere. However nitrate ion and thiosulphate ion have absorption peaks which overlap the isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate peak.The simplest general method to overcome this effect is to extract the isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate into cyclohexane and to measure the absorbance of the extract.The maximum absorbance of the cydohexane extract was at 247 nm and the peak height at this wavelength was found to be directly proportional to the isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate or Z-200 concentration in the original aqueous solution. An alternative method is to measure the spectrum of the original aqueous solution using the aqueous raffinate from extraction as a reference solution. This gives the spectrum due to isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate alone and measurement of the absorbance at 242 nm gives the concentration in the original aqueous solution. Both methods give the same value for the concentration of isopropyl ethylthionocarbamate in the original solution.

The metallogenic map of New Zealand shows the distribution of metallic mineral deposits, according to type and size, in relation to their geological setting. The major purpose of the map and accompanying 200-page monograph is to summarise the distribution, modes of occurrence and origins of the metallic mineral deposits of New Zealand. The map demonstrates the prospectivity of New Zealand for metallic minerals, particularly gold, silver, iron, and titanium. Information on each deposit is summarised in index tables based on major geotectonic units or deposit/commodity type. The mineral deposits are arranged and discussed in relation to tectonostratigraphic and tectonomagmatic units or terranes, under broad geotectonic divisions of the Paleozoic to Mesozoic Western Province, the late Paleozoic to Mesozoic Eastern Province, the mid Cretaceous to early Tertiary rifting phase, and the late Cenozoic Kaikoura Orogen. Regions or areas of marked concentration of mineralisation are recognised as metallogenic subprovinces or districts, namely: eastern Northland (Hg), the Hauraki Goldfield (epithermal Au-Ag-Pb-Zn-Cu), the west coast of the North Island (shoreline placer Fe), east Nelson (podiform Cr), west Nelson (porphyry Mo), the West Coast of the South Island (shoreline placer Ti), west Nelson-Westland (placer Au), Reefton (mesothermal Au-quartz veins), and Otago (placer Au and mesothermal Au-W quartz veins).

The End of the Line for Roadway Development By Michael Kelly, CSIRO Exploration & Mining Michael Kelly highlighted that roadway development performance remains one of the threats to expansion of Australia underground coal exports to the growing Asian market. In a recent industry study, automation was highlighted as one of seven strategies for roadway development improvement. Growing Asian markets The expansion of the Asian coal market is a long term driver for expansion of the underground coal industry in Australia - if significant productivity improvements are made. Imports of steaming coal by Asian APEC members are predicted to rise by from 150 MT to 190 MT. Australia is one of the few countries which has a potential capacity larger than predicted internal needs. Predictions are for exports of black steaming coal from Australia to increase from 50.3 MT in 1992 to 106.3 MT in 2010. To meet this prediction, an investment of $10.7 billion (in 1992 dollars) will have to be made in mining and transport facilities. This is equivalent to the opening of a major new mine each year until 2010. Many of these mines will be underground operations. However, much of Australia's capacity to respond to increased Asian demand will depend on its ability to develop underground technologies and improve productivity. The inability to make sustained improvements in roadway development rates has to date been one of the main reasons why new underground projects have failed to deliver the expected returns.

The Cowarra gold mine is at latitude 36°O'S. and longitude 149°19'E. which is roughly 20 miles north-north-east of Cooma.The deposit was· originally worked towards the end of the last century, but the presence of sulphides associated with the gold in the primary zone caused cessation of work when that zone was reached.GEOLOGY AND MINERALIZATIONThe principal country rocks are sandstones and shales of Silurian and Ordovician age, both very strongly folded with structural pitches ranging from a few degrees to almost vertical. The mine proper is within Silurian rocks and the main orebody (there are several minor parallel bodies) is developed within a shear striking approximately north, dipping approximately 70° east, and ranging in width from 2 ft to 15 ft but averaging about 4 ft.This shear is impregnated with quartz and sulphides with which the gold is associated. The predominant sulphide is pyrite though pyrrhotite is commonly present in quantity.Arsenopyrite and bornite are present in smaller amounts.Stillwell (1936, 1937a, 1937b, 1938, 1941) has published five mineragraphic reports on the ore.The various levels have been mapped in detail (Figs. 1-3) and the No. 2 level plan (Fig. 1) shows the general relationship of shearing, as now indicated by mineralization, and faulting. The Western Australian Mining and Petroleum Research Institute (WAMPRI) was established in 1981 by the Western Australian Government as a funding and co-ordinating Institute to foster research into the mining and petroleum industry within this State. To June 1984, the Institute has sponsored 34 projects with a total notional value of $2.5 million and an actual cash commitment of $1.5 million. Strong support for WAMPRI has come from Industry with 60 companies contributing half the money needed for the research grants.The 34 WAMPRI projects funded so far cover all aspects of the mining and petroleum geosciences.Several WAMPRI projects are concerned with gold including processing technology and the development of exploration models and techniques, they are providing successful results.Although well supported by Industry there is a surprising lack of applications being submitted to the Institute in the area of mining engineering, where it is felt there is much scope for research projects.

The selectivity in flotation columns involving the separation of particles of varying degrees of floatability is based on differential flotation rates in the collection zone, reflux action between the froth and collection zones, and differential detachment rates in the froth zone. Using well known theoretical models describing the separation process and experimental data, froth zone and overall flotation recovery values were quantified for particles in an anthracite coal that have a wide range of floatability potential. For highly floatable particles, froth recovery had a very minimal impact on overall recovery while the recovery of weakly floatable material was decreased substantially by reductions in froth recovery values. In addition, under carrying-capacity limiting conditions, selectivity was enhanced by the preferential detachment of the weakly floatable material. Based on this concept, highly floatable material was added directly into the froth zone when treating the anthracite coal. The enriched froth phase reduced the product ash content of the anthracite product by five absolute percentage points while maintaining a constant recovery value.

The Ravensworth-Liddell area is part of the Muswellbrook- Singleton Coal District of the Northern Coalfield. It lies in the Parishes of Liddell, Ravensworth, Vane and Howick, in the County of Durham, midway between Singleton and Muswellbrook, and is traversed by the Great Northern Railway, and the New England Highway.Ravensworth and Liddell railway stations are 57 miles arid 61 miles, respectively, north from Newcastle (Fig. 1).The area has been the centre of an intensive search for open cut coal during the past few years. More than 1,200 bores, of which about 10% were cored diamond drill holes, were drilled to depths of about 200ft. Portions with thicker cover have been explored by 10 diamond drill holes to depths of over 400ft. but core recovery from these deeper holes was poor, and the lack of detail in the recorded logs limits geological interpretation. The drilling has proved about 34,000,000 tons of open cut coal, and about 246,000,000 tons under deeper cover.GEOLOGYThe Ravensworth-Liddell area lies on the eastern flank and southern extremity of the Muswellbrook Dome, extending from Hebden in the north, to Jerry's Plains in the south, and the rocks under consideration belong to the Tomago Stage of the Upper Coal Measures. I know the theme of the Congress is "The 21st Century - Mining for Mankind" but I hope you will understand why my address touches upon some near-term issues as well. With the world oil market the way it is at present, "the long term" seems to be next week and no one is even sure what will happen tomorrow! So I am going to take a little licence with the theme of the Congress and talk about some fundamental issues that have much to do with the current uncertainties. The ways in which these issues are resolved and the role governments elect to play in the next few years will determine both the shape of the petroleum industry in the 1990s and beyond and the success with which we can confront a growing and inevitable future dependence on OPEC oil resources. But just in case you are not familiar with what has been happening in the petroleum industry recently and why the future seems more uncertain than ever, let me show you the gyrations in oil prices over the past 13 years, and remember that it is only another 13 years or so years to the 21st Century.

"The Mine Haul Road Optimisation Alliance (HROA) is a unique Australian industry–academia collaboration that has been developed to support mine haul road operators. The alliance integrates industry, end-user service providers and academic research expertise in mine haul road design, construction and operation to identify, quantify, implement and monitor the various equipment, materials and road management strategies and solutions required to drive haulage productivity improvements.Initially, a broad overview of the university–industry collaborative landscape is presented, following which the current situation in the Australian mining sector is reviewed both nationally, and on a country-wide basis internationally. This insight places into context the opportunity that strategic collaborations present, to drive productivity and efficiency in mining, while also delivering innovative technology solutions.Following an overview of the HROA collaborative structure, aims and objectives, it is shown how academia and industry collaborations can deliver a more robust and needs-driven solution to mine haul road design, performance and management, especially where integrated solutions are needed. Several studies have been conducted on the economic analysis of mining near-Earth asteroids for resources for use in Earth orbit. While these studies use detailed economic figures of merit, they often use many invalid assumptions in the trajectory design. Factors such as the energy and propellant requirements are estimated with analytic methods, however, the stay-time at the asteroid and the spacing of repeated launch opportunities are not taken into account. The work outlined in this paper attempts to combine detailed trajectory design methods with newly defined economic figures of merit to improve the economic assessment of asteroid mining missions. In the last two decades three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations have become an important tool in engineering sciences. More recently, the safety requirements in underground railway stations have increased with regard to incidents. For this reason, existing underground stations (eg Munich, Strasbourg and Berlin) are being equipped with smoke extraction facilities to protect passengers from smoke and visibility impairment in the event of fire. In addition, designs of planned underground stations (eg Karlsruhe, Doha) also include these facilities.For the commissioning of ventilation engineering systems with complex structures, the functional testing of the whole technical installation are important, as are the acceptance tests of ventilation and equipment parts. This functional testing includes not only the technical inspection of the equipment but also the acceptance measurements of the capability of the equipment and the execution of hot- or cold-smoke tests to confirm the effectiveness of the ventilation system.Due to the fact that the overhead contact line and other sensitive installations were already installed in the tunnel roof at the time that smoke tests were proposed, hot-smoke tests with fire loads up to a maximum of 1 MW could only be executed. Therefore, the evidence of the attainability of the safety objective had to be provided computationally in this special case with a fire scenario of a heat release of 10 MW using CFD simulations.This paper presents the interplay between the results from acceptance testing and smoke tests and the use of 3D CFD simulation and virtual reality using the example of Allmend station, which was repositioned underground and is part of a new section of track from Lucerne railway station to Kriens in the Zentralbahn network. The Stawell Goldfield, the westernmost of the main Victorian fields, has produced over a million and a quarter ounces of gold from one and three-quarter million tons of ore. The lodes are quartz reefs and sulphide bodies occurring in sediments of lower Ordovician or upper Cambrian age. The lodes are confined to a relatively narrow suite of weak rocks lying between stronger ones above and below and there is a definite relationship between fold structure, pitch and strength of folding and ore.LOCATION HISTORY AND PAST PRODUCTIONThe town of Stawell, situated 150 miles north-westerly from Melbourne on the main railway and road to Adelaide, is the most westerly of the main gold areas of Victoria. Alluvial gold was found at Pleasant Creek (now Stawell West) in 1853 and the usual "rush" followed. Numerous alluvial leads, some surface, others buried under up to 100 ft. of Tertiary sediments were worked. The alluvial gold was soon exhausted, but in 1857 gold-bearing reefs were found on the slopes of a prominent ridge on the northern edgeof the present town. Early reef mining was by small working parties mining to shallow depths only and treating their ore at public crushing plants. Some of the early returns were very high grade. The next stage was the amalgamation of claims and the formation of companies, with their own treatment plants. This stage continued till the last mine closed in 1921. Fine grinding in an air-swept ball mill working in closed circuit with a forced vortex air classifier has been investigated first in continuous laboratory and then in industrial scale. Results from the laboratory circuit have shown significant influence of mill load (powder filling) on the capacity of the circuit. In laboratory scale the mill load was measured and controlled by a weighing platform placed under the complete mill set-up. The mill load of the industrial air-swept ball mill has till now been controlled by measuring the power consumption of the mill motor. Thus, it was necessary to operate far from the range of optimal mill filling. To improve the circuit performance, alternative ways of mill load measurement were investigated. An important factor was investment cost, as many fine grinding mills operate in relatively small circuits that do not wan-ant large investment. In this case the task was accomplished by using a piezoelectric strain transducer, which detected strain changes in the mill shell. It was installed in the midpoint of the shell, where the highest deformation was obtained. As the transducer was on the top position, it indicated compression, and on the bottom position it measured tension. By taking the difference between the readings, it was possible to calculate total strain variations, directly proportional to the mill load. The signal from the transducer was sent to a control room via a cordless infrared communication system, employing a microprocessor control card, which could further regulate other operating parameters of the circuit according to the software model. The installation required very low investment cost and provided simplicity of application as well as stability and reliability of characteristics under severe industrial condition. The measurement system made it possible to optimise the mill load and thus increase the production from 3.2 to 3.7 dh (15 per cent), and stabilise the circuit operation.

The Olympic Dam iron-oxide copper-gold (IOCG) uranium-silver deposit is second in size only to Norilsk, the gigantic metalliferous deposit. Olympic Dam is the largest publicly declared uranium, fifth largest copper and third largest gold resource. The deposit is typified by texturally destructive brecciation and intense iron metasomatism of the Roxby Downs Granite, bedded clastic facies rocks and mafic-ultramafic dykes. The deposit contains over 100 minerals. Copper mineralisation consists of chalcopyrite, bornite and chalcocite. Uraninite, coffinite and brannerite are the dominant uranium-bearing minerals. Gold mineralisation consists of electrum, tellurides and Au-Cu alloys. Hessite is the major silver-bearing mineral. The economic minerals are disseminated throughout the breccia matrix where the average grain sizes of the Cu-sulfide, uranium, gold and silver minerals are ~50, 20, <5, <5 microns, respectively.A significant number of sampling theory-based test programs have been completed since the mid-1990s to establish sampling nomographs, select appropriate sampling (ie split versus chip and interval lengths) and sample preparation protocols, quantify the errors associated with each subsampling stage, determine the practical uncertainty limits of Olympic Dam matrix-matched standards, and identify improvement opportunities related to the ongoing assaying quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) program. During conventional eddy current separation, a repulsive force is applied to metallic particles by placing them in a rapidly changing magnetic field generated by a spinning magnetic rotor carrying an arrangement of alternate magnetic poles. This method works effectively for larger non-ferrous metallic objects, such as aluminium cans, but as the metallic particles become smaller, the bulk repulsive force on the particles is increasingly replaced by a rotational torque. Therefore, for small metallic particles it makes sense to use particle rotation, rather than particle repulsion, to effect a separation. Eddy current separators using particle rotation are similar in construction to present separators, but are designed to produce a rotating field of essentially constant angular velocity and field strength. Practical and economic particle rotation eddy current separations are possible down to particle sizes of about 200 ¦m, but separations, at probably uneconomic rates, can be carried out on particles as small as 50 ¦m.
