Drilling and shooting techniques at Moura open-cut have evolved over a period of 16 years and are the result of hard earned experience combined with established practices and consul- tation with professional services. The wide range of overburden types encoun- ted in the field requires varying methods to achieve the best results at all times. Safe working conditions for the employees and protection of mining equipment is of para- mount importance and close liaison is maintain- ed with the Department of Mines Queensland to keep abreast with changing legislation. Drill patterns, charging profiles, types of explosives and ultimate results are des- cribed in detail along with a resume of equip- ment. Costs of drilling, labour and explosives are also analysed with a total of approximately 20c per cubic metre of shot ground. Future developments and improvements to facilities are also outlined.

The Pike River Coal Company is set to develop the Pike River Coal Mine in the Paparoa Ranges of New ZealandÆs South Island. The mine will be developed to extract a coking coal deposit of the Brunner Seam, some 46 km north-east of Greymouth, using a combination of continuous miners and hydraulic extraction.   The mining area is located within Department of Conservation (DOC) land and is adjacent to the escarpment of the Paparoa Range and the Paparoa National Park. As such, the major restriction to planned extraction is protection of:   +        the western escarpment, +        vertical and sub-vertical rock faces, +        permanent water courses, +        significant vegetation, and +        steep slopes.   The mine will use its elevation advantage to hydraulically flume coal from the working faces to the pit bottom area where it will be slurried to approximately 35 per cent density of solids and pumps down a slurry line to the coal prep plant some 10.5 km down the Pike River Valley. The coal will be sold on the export market as a high quality coking coal for international steel making.

The Paddington Gold Mine ties within the Norseman-Wiluna greenstone belt, in the celebrated Eastern Goldfields province of the Yilgarn Block, Western Australia. Regionally, tropical to subtropical weathering has effected development of a prominent regolith and a deep lateritic profile. Detailed examination of the clay mineralogy, largely from a single drill hole which traversed the original Paddington I deposit, outlined three separate, vertically gradational assemblages, which are, in part, rock-type dependant. These include; 1. kaolinite with minur to trace quantities of sericite/illite (0-22m), 2. smectite and/or interstratified clay minerals, together with variable amounts of kaolinite, relic chlorite and illite/sericite (22-81m), and 3. chlorite and sericite (> 81m). Near surface, kaolinitic assemblages may be directly correlated with the intensity of lateritization, whereas smectite and interstratified clays from intermediate zones appear in association

The Peak Gold Mines Pty Ltd (PGM) operations are located approximately 9 km south of Cobar, NSW. PGM currently mines and treats ore from three separate orebodies within 5 km of the original plant. Production from the original Peak orebody ceased in April 2002, with ore currently sourced from underground at New Occidental and Perseverance, while New Cobar supplies ore from an open cut mine. In March 2003, Wheaton Minerals Asia Pacific purchased the operation from Rio Tinto who operated the mine for around ten years. The Perseverance deposit is situated between 600 and 1000 m south of the Peak orebody. Access is via shaft from Peak to 630 m below surface and then by decline to the northern end of the deposit locally known as Zone A. Development of the resource commenced mid 2002 to set up for a long hole open stoping operation at 25 m level spacing. The first production stope was successfully brought on line December 2003. The Perseverance deposit is hosted by sediments and volcanics along the eastern margin of the Devonian Cobar basin and is one of many deposits with the Cobar Gold Field. The Cobar Gold Field has produced approximately 2.5 million ounces of gold since 1880. The Perseverance area had long been considered prospective due to the presence of old workings at the southern extensions of Peak line of lode. Significant mineralisation was first discovered at Perseverance in 1994 when PGM drilled a hole targeted 950 m below the historic workings. The target was based on an apparent plunge to the stratigraphic controls to the Peak Orebody. Subsequent exploration within and around the ægreaterÆ Perseverance area has been significantly aided through the use of downhole electro-magnetic surveys due to the close spatial association between gold and sulfide mineralisation.

Copper-gold ores have been technically difficult and uneconomical to process due to high consumptions of cyanide. Many copper oxide and sulphide minerals react with cyanide to form copper cyanide complexes, partly contributing to the high level of weak-acid dissociable cyanide in the tailings which is normally experienced during the processing of copper-gold ores. The cost for detoxification, if required for treating these tailings, would further inhibit the development of these copper-gold resources unless the cyanide used for leaching was recovered. Several technologies have been proposed to process copper-gold ores, aiming to recover copper as a co-product and cyanide for recycling in conjunction with the leaching process. A critical review of these processes reveals that a pre-concentration stage (solvent extraction or resin ion exchange) is required. Cyanide is recovered by the conventional Acidification-Volatilisation-Regeneration technique in most cases. A critical evaluation is also provided on technical aspects related to the use of Vitrokele Technology and a newly developed Elutech process in processing copper-gold ores, in particular with its application at May Day Mine.

Oxidation or sulphidization of the surface of pyrrhotIte partIcles enhances atomic interdiffusion at elevated temperatures and provides a mechanism for interface growth between particles in contact. In a mass of pyrrhotite-rich ore or tailing, where oxidation heating is not controlled, bonding of particles by diffusional mass transport contributes significantly to the agglomeration of the mass.

Goodenough and Fergusson Islands, in eastern PapuaNew Guinea, lie in an area of crustal extension on the western end of the Woodlark Basin seafloor spreading system. The islands are made up of a number of mountainous domes of complexely deformed basement, and these are intruded by large bodies of granodiorite. The domes are bounded by curved shear zones and faults dipping outwards at angles of around 25 to 45¦. The cores of the domes contain lower crustal rocks of eclogite and granulite facies, these rocks have undergone retrograde metamorphism in the outer sheared zones. Movement indicators on the shear zones indicate a complex moverm.-It geometry which does not fit the models proposed by earlier workers. These dome-like structures are similar to the metamorphic core complexes of the western United States Cordilleran region, however there are a number of aspects which do not fit with the models proposed for the development of metamorphic core complexes. Uplift of the metamorphic basement probably resulted from a combination of forces associated with the extension of the crust and the intrusion and emplacement of granodiorite plutons.

The model considers a range of design parameters and operating condit- ions and evaluates the significance of these in the ultimate design of a mine. It also considers organizational features associated with the mining method and examines the inter-dependence between operations. An important characteristic of the model is the use of both stochastic and deterministic methods to study the behaviour of the complete mining system. The simulator selects the appropriate unit operation, computes and records its time, performs it and then calculates the production and cost data. Output is in the form of shift, day, week or period repor-ts. These reports will indicate problem areas such as restrictions in the production network for a given set of conditions. Transformations of minerals to processed mineral products fundamentally involve wholesale chemical change, and therefore have a high potential for the release of chemicals and wastes. In this regard minerals processing contrasts with downstream production operations, which involve mainly physical changes. The contrast with mining, which must take place where the minerals are found, is that mineral processing allows choices as to location, processes, fuels and reductants. These choices provide a foundation for dealing with issues of resource stewardship. This paper locates the mineral processing industry in the global perspective by quantifying the masses of major material inputs and outputs, based on current processing choices. Estimates for recycling have also been collated, revealing figures that differ surprisingly from commonly held impressions. The paper draws on a variety of current sources, mainly those available through the Internet, to rank the major transformed virgin mineral products by production, price and value. The figures demonstrate the dominance of Portland cement and steel in the global environmental impacts of mineral processing. Aluminium comes a distant third in the list, and the metals particularly associated with localised environmental impacts have relatively small global effects compared with those of the staple materials of our built environment. This global macro input/output perspective, with materials flows expressed per unit of virgin product, provides a benchmark for grasping sustainability challenges within specific operating businesses. Because of the global scope and pervasive impact of the minerals processing industry, the issue of resource stewardship is rising as a matter for public concern. There appears to be a developing view that the mining and mineral processing sector should take responsibility for these products throughout their various life cycles. However, in a future of stabilising consumption, dematerialisation and intensive recycling, the mining industry would only need to provide the top-up to a stock of recirculating materials. The question of responsibility for stewardship over SocietyÆs stock of materials remains open.

Thirty six different commodities were recorded from 3708 mineral occurrences in the Atherton 1:250 000 Sheet area, mapped by personnel of the Queensland Department of Resource Industries. Tin, occurring in 56% of all mineral occurrences, is the most common, followed by copper, tungsten, silver, lead, gold, fluorite molybdenum, zinc and antimony. The densest area of mineral occurrences is the Herberton Mineral Field, one of the most intensively mined areas in the state.The majority of occurrences in the sheet area are fracture, fault or shear related vein or lenticular deposits, with subordinate types being pipe, skarn, endogreisen, disseminated and porphyry copper deposits. However the larger mines in the area are commonly of the subordinate types including the Red Dome gold-copper skarn, the Wolfram Camp and Bamford Hill tungsten- m olydbenum endogreisens, and the Vulcan pipe tin deposit. Significant gold prospects occur in quartz-antimony veins, breccia pipes and skarn deposits associated with rhyolitic porphyry dykes. A fluorite-gold association has been noted in several areas on the western side of the sheet.Mineralised fractures are predominantly oriented in a NNW direction which is the major trend in the Hodgkinson Province. This paper illustrates that sampling problems and difficulties are as common in an R&D environment as they are in an operating plant. Researchers need to be aware of the potential influence of poor sampling practices and when feasible determine the sampling and analytical precision at the start of any experimentation. Specific problems that have been encountered are discussed and the procedures implemented to overcome these difficulties are described. Examples from projects include the cyanidation of a Au/Ag ore, column leaching of refractory gold and oxide ores, the bioremediation of contaminated sites and the flotation of ore containing native copper.

In this paper, the history of Japanese coal and gas outbursts is presented and circumstances and countermeasures at the time cf outbursts are summarized statistically. Then the present meth- ods for prevention used practically in Japan are introduced. From statistics, it was reconfirmed that Japanese coal and gas outbursts have occur- ed frequently in the district of geological disturbance, symptoms immediately before out- burst occurrence were the phenomena in connec- tion with failure of a coal seam and outbursts have occurred many times when the number of boreholes had not been sufficient to degas. One of the principal protective method adopted in Japan is the large diameter gas drainage boring which also posesses a stress relief effects. There is a tendency to make diameter of borehole larger to increase both stress relief and degassing effects.

The Hauraki Volcanic Region of the North Island developed between 18 and 1.9 Ma. Initial andesitic volcanism from 18 to 12 Ma was followed by 12 to 1.9 Ma volcanic activity that included rhyolitic, dacitic, andesitic, and basaltic compositions, with a gradual migration of activity to the SSE. Early andesitic volcanism evolved over the course of 8 m.y. to more silicic compositions; this trend was reset and repeated by post-10 Ma andesitic volcanism. Early and later andesites are otherwise remarkably similar in trace element composition. Rhyolites have the most diverse compositions, suggesting a major role for crustal input in their formation.

Optimisation of an open-pittable orebody raises many questions relating to the operation, corporate objectives and orebody characteristics. Often the `black box' is expected to provide instant answers to many complex questions. The aim of this paper is to pose some commonly asked questions that arise during an optimisation study, and to try to provide some answers. The questions are aimed at typical objectives that affect the project and are of primary concern with the decisions that affect its course during the various development stages.

The acid mine drainage (AMD) situation at three opencast collieries in the Witbank Coalfield, South Africa, was evaluated from different perspectives. Twenty-seven test pits were dug into the spoils of these collieries to characterise the in situ conditions of spoils of varying age. Detailed static testing was done on surrounding drill holes and additional samples were taken from the test pits. Selected samples were tested using different techniques, namely ABA, mineralogy and kinetic tests. Groundwater monitoring boreholes from the areas surrounding these spoils were also used for characterisation. The ABA results compared favourably with the in situ determinations; acidic test pits proved to be potentially acid-generating from ABA, even when the samples had neutral paste pH. Kinetic test results showed these samples to yield low pH leachate over the test period. In several of these results, the theoretical depletion of neutralising potential and the onset of acidity were well matched. NAG pH-values and final observed water chemistry corresponded for the cells predicted by ABA to acidify, but compared poorly in cells that did not acidify. Results from the non-acidic spoils were consistent with the in situ observations. Alternative kinetic test methodologies were also employed. Duplicate samples were tested in humidity cells and in aerated trays that were manually wetted on a regular basis. Results from these tests showed an excellent correlation. Detailed mineralogical determinations using XRD and XRF were used for comparison to the ABA and, in some cases, humidity cell results. These comparisons show that the ABA results are consistent with the results expected from the mineralogy. The conclusion from these assessments is that ABA, in most cases, provides information that can be correlated to the field, mineralogy and to humidity cells. The use of multiple techniques leads to a higher degree of confidence in the use of the data.

The paper discusses details of the plant and the influence the soft clay overburden has on the design of the plant, to handle the dif- ficult Latrobe Valley overburden.

The Mt. Morgan mine, located 36 km SSW of Rockhampton, Qld at Lat. 23¦38' S, Long. 1500 22'E, is hosted by a Middle Devonian sequence of acid volcanic rocks and sediments. The Upper Nine Mile Creek (UNMC) prospect, 14 km SE of the Mt. Morgan mine, is in an ap- parently equivalent sequence of rocks. The Late Devonian Mt. Morgan Tonalite separates the two areas. The Mt. Chalmers mine, located 27 km NE of Rockhampton at Lat. 23¦ 18' S, Long. 150039'E, is hosted by the Early Permian Berserker Beds. These three volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits show pronounced similarities in their host rock lithologies and stratigraphic-struc- tural settings.

The Mathews et al (1981) stability graph was developed to provide guidance in the determination of stope sizes to control dilution in bulk mining of large orebodies. Longhole and sublevel open stoping (LHOS and SLOS) are the lower end in scale of underground mass mining with panel and block caving (PBC) at the higher end. Currently, the stability states of stopes in the stability graph are described qualitatively as stable, unstable or cave. The alternative quantitative option to the qualitative stability graph is the Equivalent Linear Overbreak Slough (ELOS) stability graph. The ELOS stability graph only applies to narrow vein orebodies. It is easy for the Mathews et al (1981) and the ELOS stability graphs to be applied outside the limits of their databases. What is currently referred to as ‘stable’ in the present stability graphs has diverse interpretations at different mines depending on their acceptable dilution values. In 2014, a research program was conceptually conceived at the UNSW Australia School of Mining Engineering to develop a quantitative dilution-based stability graph independent of orebody width to address some industry concerns on the use of the stability graphs. A dilution-based stability graph provides the mining engineer the flexibility to determine open stope sizes based on what dilution amounts are acceptable. The graph also unifies both the Mathews et al (1981) and ELOS stability graphs for wide and narrow vein orebodies, thus, eliminating their potential misapplications. To date, the concept is proven with case studies from metalliferous underground mining operations located across Australia. The mining industry, and in fact the world, has undergone significant changes in the past five to ten years, ranging from the metals boom, the global financial crisis and the rise and fall of national economies, to name just a few. There has been a focus on sustainable development for projects and operations in the mining industry, mainly pushed onto the industry by communities, governments and other agencies. While sustainable development and operation is a worthy priority for mining operations, discussions with mining industry personnel (with a strong slant on the mineral processing perspective) have shown other issues have surpassed the typical issues of water resources, energy availability and the environment. These include staff turnover and skills shortages, extracting metal from more complex orebodies and the uptake of new step-change technology.A number of key operating mineral processing personnel were interviewed to determine their perspective on the current issues facing the mining industry.
