This paper reviews the development and operation of a small underground tin mine in NE Tasmania. Tin mineralisation was discovered in the Lottah area in the 1880's with early alluvial and eluvial workings leading to the development of large low grade open pit operations. Apart from short lived activities operations ceased in 1915. Intensive exploration in 1978-81 outlined substantial tonnages of low grade tin mineralisation (0.2% Sn) of open pit material. An underground ore body was also located (800 000 tonnes 0.6% Sn). Spectrum Resources Australia Pty Limited acquired a 98 percent interest in the property in 1988. Mine and mill development began in early 1989 based on an underground mine utilising trackless mining using room and pillar with fill stoping. The milling circuit involves primary jaw crushing, Barmac secondary crushing to lmm, Mogensen and DSM screens with jigs and tables to make a wet concentrate. Final tin concentrates are produced by high tension and magnetic separation. Planned production rates are 500 t/day with a mine life of 6-7 years.

The copper-clay deposits consist largely of goethite and clayey mudstones carrying native copper, cuprite, and chalcocite. The mudstones are of Ordovician age, are interbedded with Fe-Mn carbonates, and probably contained syngenetic iron and copper sulphides. The secondary copper minerals have been derived from post-Devonian weathering in situ and also by deposition from surfaee and underground waters draining the adjacent mineralized volcanic rocks.

This paper reviews the need for, and potential of, dry technologies in mineral processing, and considers the problems that will have to be solved for such technologies to be economic. The need for water in conventional mineral processing is reviewed, together with the advantages and disadvantages of operating wet and dry. A wide range of dry processing techniques have been developed in the past, some of which are in routine use either in mineral processing or in allied industries. However more information is needed to determine which of these is appropriate to replace conventional wet processing. It is concluded that a new paradigm is required for the design of processing flow sheets, which will need to extend to innovative ways of valuing particular process routes. Research is also required to develop current dry methods to increase throughput and overcome other disadvantages, and to develop new or refined dry separation methods, perhaps exploiting alternative mineral properties.

Considerable confusion is to be found in the methods of estimating mineral reserves. The solution appears to be more cooperation between industry and government to agree upon a classification system with guidelines to overcome the problem of the many variable factors affecting reserves. The classification system proposed by the United States Bureau of Mines and the United States Geological Survey (USBM/USGS) together with the guidelines similar to those suggested by the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy/Australian Mining Industry Council (AusIMM/AMIC) is recommended for reporting mineral reserves to government.

The increasing pace of modern mining makes constantly greater demands upon the several contributing departments of rock breaking and transport, and rock-drilling, as the spearhead of attack, has received a great deal of attention with respect to both machines and steels. By a series of mechanical improvements, combined with the application of selected heat-treated alloy steels, the rock-drill has now been developed into a machine capable of rapid drilling and long service under severe working conditions. As a factoryproduct made under strict metallurgical control it is as foolproof as, say, the modern automobile, and, like its prototype, it can be kept in efficient operation by a minor amount of attention during use and by periodical adjustments and replacements.The same cannot be said, unfortunately, of the drills with which the machine is supplied; in conventional mine-shop practice these are made of the best tool steel shaped and heat-treated under the poorest of metallurgical conditions.The crudities of steel-shop practice have, in fact, always prevented the full exploitation of the steels available at any time, and even at the present day the general standard of treatment offers a contrast with the quality of the steels which moves the metallurgist to amusement, despondency or outrage, according to his temperament. Nevertheless, the tendency persists to meet the increasing demands of the rock-drill primarily by the use of still better steels, and secondarily by improvement, of the steel-shop practice. Athird type of development is the introduction of factorymade tools in the form of detachable bits and rods. "The large Yandi channel iron deposit (CID) is located in the north-west of Western Australia and is currently mined via open pit methods. Drilling at Yandi is widely spaced and current estimates are mostly linear averages of the surrounding local samples. Linear estimates such as ordinary kriging (OK) based on block sizes that are significantly smaller than the dimensions of the drilling grid are less variable than the unknown reality (Armstrong and Champigny, 1989).Conditional simulation (CS) provides a series of plausible realisations that represent the actual grade variability at a small scale (eg 1 m + 1 m + 1 m). These simulations are very useful for a number of purposes, eg: optimising grade control, stockpiling and blending selection of optimal drill hole spacing assessing resource risk on contained tonnage and metal.At Yandi the major constituents of the ore (Fe, P2O5, SiO2, Al2O3 and LOI) are correlated to varying degrees. Independent CS of each assay variable will not reproduce these correlations. Reproducing the correlations (and the shape of scatterplots) is important if the simulations are used for the abovementioned purposes. This paper examines and compares various methods of CS that aim to reproduce the correlations between the assay variables.The CS methods evaluated in this paper are conditional co-simulation (CCS) using the linear model of co-regionalisation and two other, alternative multivariate simulation methods, which use min/max autocorrelation factors (MAF) or the stepwise conditional transform (SCT) to de-correlate assay variables before performing independent CS. It was found that CCS best reproduced the characteristics (histograms, variogram, scatterplots, etc) of the declustered drill hole data (Figure 1). Whilst simulation using MAF generally produced acceptable results, the method did not adequately reproduce the variance of the assay variables. The univariate statistics, histograms and experimental variograms were acceptable for simulations generated from the SCT. Bivariate statistics, cross-variograms and scatterplot reproduction for the SCT were unacceptable. The latter method produced inferior results because there were insufficient samples to obtain a reliable transform of the third assay variable in the transformation sequence.None of the abovementioned simulation methods provides good reproduction of all the scatterplots. This is due to the presence of clay pods, which cause some scatterplots to display two trends. These clay pods contain higher percentages of SiO2 and Al2O3 than the surrounding CID. The clay pods are generally smaller than the drill-grid dimensions. Thus their locations are typically unknown and they cannot be defined by manual interpretation, eg via wireframes. The locations of the clay pods were simulated via indicator CS. CCS was then performed separately for the clay pods and the CID. This significantly improved the reproduction of the correlation coefficients, the scatterplots and visually the simulation was more geologically realistic. Simulating the location of clay pods followed by CCS of assay variables is the recommended approach for simulation at the Yandi CID.CITATION:De-Vitry, C, 2013. According to our experimental results, the following oxygen probe recommended, that is, the magnesia stabilized zirconia was employed as a solid electrolyte and Fe.FexO solid elect- rode was used as a reference electrode. Using such an oxygen probe, we tried to measure the oxygen potentials in molten metals, mattes and gases in the following fields of non-ferrous metal industry, molten copper in the side launder before casting, molten crude lead in the forehearth of ISP blast furnace, molten copper mattes in the forehearth of blast furnace and in the settler of flash smelting furnace, gas in the settler of copper flash smelting furnace and flue gas in the electric furnace for ferro-silicon. In the past ten years or so, many experi- mental results in the field of fundamental studies have confirmed that the equilibrium oxygen potential could be measured conveniently and accurately by an electrochemical method using a zirconia solid electrolyte. Recently, such an electrochemical technique has been also applied to a device for physicochemical invest- igation or process control in the non-ferrous metal industry. Such a device consists of an oxygen con- centration cell with stabilized zirconia, and it is commonly called an "oxygen probe" or "oxygen sensor".

The optimisation of mine complexes and related value chains is a challenging problem due to the simultaneous presence of a highly-dimensional decision space, integer decision variables, non-linear constraints and recovery functions, as well as geological and market uncertainty. In addition, if the uncertainty is revealed progressively, then decisions need to continuously adapt to new information, which poses additional challenges. Stochastic dynamic programming is a well-known class of methods for addressing problems where a decision-maker reacts to new information. While simplistic applications of dynamic programming using exact representations would be intractable for any realistic mine planning problem, new dynamic programming methods using approximate value function representations have been successfully implemented in the past to address problems of similar complexity. This work formulates the problem of mine complex optimisation as an approximate dynamic program and presents an application of the resulting method to a gold-copper deposit.CITATION:Paduraru, C and Dimitrakopoulos, R, 2014. The total world steel production in 1998 amounted to approximately 780 000 000 t. The share of electric steelmaking was in the range of 35 per cent and is expected to increase further to over 40 per cent of the world's production within the next ten years. As electric steelmaking is primarily based on the use of scrap and as it is progressing more and more into higher steel grades the need for low-residual metallics will become increasingly important. Consequently, the demand for scrap substitute material will increase, reflected in the world wide spate of interest for DRI (Direct Reduced Iron) and HBI (Hot Briquetted Iron). The increased significance of DRI/HBI as a substitute for steel scrap has obviously emanated also from its comparatively lower and more predictable costs per ton and definable chemistry. In 1998 already 37 million tons of DRI/HBI were globally produced.

Between, 1980 and 1984, the demand for non- ferrous metals in the free world grew annually by 1.5 per cent for copper, 0.4 per cent for lead, 1.4 per cent for zinc, and 2.5 per cent for nickel. The growth rate decreased substantially compared to the rate experienced before 1980, and was far lower than the GNP growth during the corresponding period. The main reasons for this are considered to be 1. resource-saving efforts by industrialized countries resulting from the first and the second oil crises, 2. saturated demand for durable consumer goods, and 3. substitution of non-ferrous metals by new materials such as optical fibers.

The wirebar furnacing and casting facility commissioned in 1970 at Copper Refineries Pty. Ltd. (CRL), Townsville, comprising a 70 tonne/ hour ASARCO shaft furnace and a Walker type casting wheel, contained several unique design features. Since commissioning, effort has been directed at improving metallurgical control of the casting process. This has resulted in the identification of optimum mould lubricant properties and the use of continuous on-line measurement of molten metal oxygen content. Casting defects such as cracks and surface porosity are readily explained and controlled using these techniques.

Precipitation of inorganic compounds or metals from aqueous solutions can either be physical (crystallisation) or chemical in nature. Chemical processes are varied; they may be due to hydrolytic action, due to ionic interaction, or due to reduction (ie transfer of electrons). Transfer of electrons in reduction processes may take place homogeneously or heterogeneously. In the first case it may be ionic or nonionic in nature. Heterogeneous processes may be electrochemical or electrolytic. Examples of interest to hydrometallurgy are given.

In the Broken Hill South mine tile practice of issuing to the miner a quantity of fuse and a box of caps from which he made up the "rods" required for a particular blast, has been abandoned. Instead, capping stations have been established, and the miner can now obtain, from the magazines, fuses cut to accurate lengths with the detonators attached.Various types of fuse-cutting machines and crimping devices are available, but only those used by the Broken Hill South Mine Ltd. are described in this paper.The fuse-cutting machine, designed by the engineering staff, is an electrically driven unit fitted with a gear box for the purpose of adjusting the rate at which the fuse is fed to the cutting device, thereby enabling fuses of various lengths to be accurately severed from the main coil of fuse.The machine in question is designed to cut 4, 6, and 8-ft. fuses, but no difficulty should be experienced in designing a machine to cut fuses to any required lengths.

Acceptable post-closure performance of decommissioned mining operations is a critical factor in persuading todayÆs environmentally conscious public that the mining industry will not continue to burden future generations with the legacy of environmental tragedies. Post-closure impacts must be identified and managed through robust engineering design if the post-closure environment is to be environmentally sustainable. To manage potential post-closure risks (environmental, health, safety, social and economic) within acceptable limits, WMC incorporates a risk-based approach to closure planning and engineering design. WMCÆs risk-based closure engineering design process provides a simple methodology for developing robust closure plans û the process æengineers outÆ unacceptable risks and æengineers inÆ a sustainable post-closure environment. Benefits of the risk-based process include stakeholder endorsed closure criteria for an agreed post-closure land-use, focusing of resources on major risks, and a realistic and accurate estimate of the required closure provision. The outcome is an increased likelihood of satisfying the three pillar goals of sustainable development û a financially sound solution that poses a low risk to the environment and future generations.

Instantaneous outbursts have occurred at Metropolitan Colliery from the pick and shovel work of early days to the modern mining techniques of today. Developments have been the introduction of an emission index to measure the proneness of the coal to outbursts, drainage and destressing by large diameter holes, attempts at higher productivity by the introduction of pulsed infusion shotfiring and improvements in ventilation. The future plans and aims for the Colliery include prediction of outbursts, seam gas pre- drainage and longwall mining.

This paper attempts to highlight some of the problems encountered in the economic exploitation of the deeper coal seams by opencast mining methods. The major cost elements of three methods of overburden removal are examined in relation to the overall cost of winning coal from deeper-lying coal seams. The three overburden removal methods examined are dragline stripping and two systems combining dragline stripping with shovels and trucks at varying depths of overburden. A dragline is, undoubtedly, the most cost effective system of overburden removal for depths of up to 30 metres but it is suggested that, when dealing with incremental overburden depths in excess of 30 metres, engineers should consider carefully the possibility of using a shovel and truck operation, or other system, to augment the use of a dragline.
