Mining companies in order to compete and succeed in being viable business propositions must look to the future and select mining methods which guarantee improved efficiency and productivity as well as lower costs. A mining company in adopting a method of mining must now select the equipment most compatible. To some mines compatible equipment may mean the use of drilling jumbos to replace hand held rock drills or the use of load haul dump units to replace scrapers. To other more mechanised mines compatible equipment may mean the use of raise borers and road heading machines. The right decision will be where equipment compliments method in such a way that the working environment is improved, productivity is maximised, cost if reduced and all profit opportunities are optimised. An example of such is where the use of improved mining techniques in underground operations may see cut off grades reduced. By selectively mining these lower grade orebodies, smaller operation's ore reserves improve and the capacity for continued growth is enhanced.

Several new techniques. which may be applied with advantage to the search for uranium are described. Scintillation type gamma spectrometers are now available for airborne', ground and borehole use. These can distinguish in a broad way between anomalies due to uranium, thorium and potassium. Gamma spectrometers based on semiconductor detectors now under development should be capable of much greater resolution. These should also make possible rapid, accurate and cheap radiometric analyses of samples containing uranium and/or thorium, whether in radioactive equilibrium or not. Another valuable prospecting aid, particularly in areas of tropical leaching, is systematic sampling of soil for radon content. Equip- ment for this purpose is currently available and it will be possible to extend the method when development of an alpha probe suitable for use in deeper holes is completed. Variations in the concentration of certain trace elements'in soil (e.g. mercury) also offer promise in the search for mineralized zones which may contain economic eon¦- centrations of uranium.

Gold Fields Australia is constructing two major ventilation shafts at the Wallaby gold mine in Western Australia. The new ventilation shafts are required to facilitate the long term ventilation strategy for the mine, thereby allowing continued extraction of ore beyond 1000 m below the surface. The construction work has involved all of the challenges that shaft construction can throw up, including challenging geotechnical conditions, unexpected high water inflows and major circulation loss during pilot hole drilling for raise boring. An extensive geotechnical and hydrological investigation program was undertaken prior to awarding the shaft construction contracts. While most of the risks were identified, several proved to be much more challenging than expected. The shaft construction methods included conventional sinking into the fresh rock profile in each shaft, followed by raise bore pilot hole drilling and reaming. A headframe was constructed for the first shaft, which was sunk to 92 m with a stage suspended in the shaft to facilitate the concrete lining and provide rope guides for the kibble winding. Drawing from experience when sinking the first shaft, additional ground pre-conditioning was implemented for the second shaft, which was pre-supported with continuous piles to 28 m followed by sinking to 50 m using a crane instead of winders and a headframe. Following the conventional sinking through the weathered zone in each shaft, the shafts were completed using a raise bore. The first shaft utilised a riser pipe and rotary vertical drilling system (RVDS) with the second shaft having utilised a dual rotary rig for pilot hole drilling. Alluvial gold was discovered on Sudest Island in 1888, and by 1893, an official production of 10 000 oz had been won by expatriate miners from shallow alluvial and colluvial workings. Hardrock sources were located and while one was developed at Mt Adelaide, production is unknown. Sudest Island comprises mostly phyllites and lesser coarse grained rocks which are cut by metamorphic quartz veins and basic (locally shoshonitic) intrusives. Sheared and altered basalts and serpent- inites represent are believed to be elements of an ophiolitic suite inferred to be associated with metamorphic core complex development and thus similar to tectonic environments on Misima and the D'Entrec- asteaux Islands. No epithermal-style quartz suggestive of a target similar to that on Misima Island has been identified on Sudest. A hardrock source for the alluvial and colluvial gold is interpreted to be metamorphic quartz veins similar to those in the Bendigo- Ballarat Zone of central Victoria, possibly remobilising gold derived from the meta- sedimentary and meta-igneous rock pile. The present focus is on development of a small scale alluvial gold mining operation in conjunction with exploration for hardrock targets. This latter programme remains at a reconnaissance stage.

In the geologically prospective nations which rim the Pacific Ocean, mineral deposits offer great potential to create wealth for social and economic development. The paper first examines the geological and economic attributes of potential mineral wealth based on current outlook assessment of all significant base metal deposits discovered to 1988 in two Pacific Rim nations - Australia and Canada. The variability of mineral wealth among the economic deposits evaluated and the major contribution of the few world-class discoveries to total mineral wealth are highlighted. Then, the essential but too often neglected linkage between the makeup of potential wealth and its actual realization is analyzed. The impact of taxation and the role of exploration are crucial in this regard. Finally, the ingredients of exploration success, prerequisites for realizing the mineral wealth of nations, are examined.

The cement industry requires large quan- tities of limestone, its main raw material. It is the major consumer of this mineral. Limestone is widely distributed throughout Australia but location in relation to major markets, and transport considerations render most deposits of no economic value. Of those which are sufficiently close to the major me- tropolitan markets many are rejected as being unsuitable on grounds of quality, inadequate size for major development, or other reasons such as environmental considerations. Detailed geological investigations are necessary, not only to prove raw material sources prior to establishment of a cement works but also to permit planned extraction programmes and satisfactory grade control during subsequent development. Conventional field techniques have generally proved adequate for raw material exploration. Data assessment and reserves estimation also are by conventional methods although the specific requirements of the industry relating to raw material and cement quality, the type of manufacturing process and fuel used are relevant. The paper describes a spectrometric method and apparatus developed for lithology logging in brown coal formations. The nuclear spectromet- ric technique developed is able to delineate coal/sand/clay seams. One requirement was to log inside drilling rods, as well as cased or open holes. The method described is based on combined natural gamma and gamma- gamma techniques using a spectrometric system for signal acquisition and subsequent computer based on-line data analysis and interpretation.

Codelco’s Salvador Project has been operating a block/panel caving mine for more than 50 years. This underground mining method dynamically mixes the ore and dilution. As a result, forecasting grades is difficult and achieving 100 per cent extraction of the reserves is practically impossible. A substantial volume of the ore mixed with dilution becomes remnant ore and remains to be subsequently extracted.A potential open pit mine is under evaluation at Codelco’s Salvador Project, which includes the extraction of remnant ore post-block caving extraction. An effective methodology has been implemented to estimate what is left behind once the underground mine has closed. A new mixing method using the Cellular Automata (Alfaro and Saavedra, 2004) approach has been used to allow estimation of the remnant ore with a sufficient level of confidence to be included as part of the open pit reserve.A remnant block model is created using elements such as in situ block model, drawpoint layouts, historical production records and the drawpoint extraction. Using this information, simulations of the extraction of the mine by month from 1959 to 2019 were completed, using different mixing scenarios and trying to replicate the tonnage and grade extracted.Finally, the remnant block model is categorised using a score card with four inputs to assess the risk of the estimation of this material into a category class (measured, indicated and inferred).CITATION:Villa, D and Farías, F, 2016. As part of a long-term study of titanium minerals processing being undertaken by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC), techniques have been developed to measure the electrical properties of the various minerals. The measured values will be used to model the behaviour of the various minerals in high-tension roll and electrostatic plate separators. The resistivities of ilmenite, rutile and zircon from a number of Australian producers have been measured by applying a DC voltage across a test sample and measuring the resulting very small current flow. By appropriate design of the measurement cell and attention to the experimental procedure, reproducible resistivity values have been obtained, ranging from 106Ωm for ilmenite to 1013Ωm for zircon. However, the conditions of measurement are radically different from those under which electrical separation takes place. It is not certain that the measured values reflect the resistivities seen under high-tension separation, during which the particles are subject to a high intensity corona field. Consequently, an alternative technique for measurement of resistivity under conditions of corona bombardment has been developed. It is based on the experimental procedure of Castle and Yelle (1979) used to measure the resistivity of fly ash under the conditions occurring in electrostatic precipitators. This paper describes the development of the segmented ground plane measurement surface and a high-voltage switched resistor network which comprises the in situ resistivity apparatus. Results are presented comparing the measurements made under corona bombardment with those made using the DC measurement cell. The equipment has also been used to study the current distribution from a corona wire, as a function of high-tension voltage and wire-to-plane spacing.

In the 1890s, The Goldfields Water Supply Department in Western Australia commissioned the diamond drilling of two deep artesian exploratory water bores near Coolgardie (Blatchford, 1899). At the time, in spite of strongly-worded advice to the contrary from the Government geologists, there was a wide popular belief that you could obtain artesian groundwater virtually anywhere providing you drilled deep enough. The first Coolgardie hole was drilled to over 900 m, despite the fact that the bore penetrated granite from a depth of 5 m below the surface. Drilling proceeded for more than 16 months, between July 1896 and November 1897. A small quantity of salt water was struck at a depth of 36 m. The second bore was mercifully terminated at a depth of 50 m, also in granite, with again only a small inflow of salt water. Such were the desperate lengths that were pursued to obtain a reliable water supply for the influx of people in the Eastern Goldfields gold rush. The WA Goldfields continued to rely on huge condensers for water supply until that great engineering feat, the construction of a water pipeline from Mundaring Weir to Coolgardie, was completed in 1903. An enormous network of rail tracks penetrated outwards from Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie for the collection of timber, principally to feed the condensers. Remnants of the rail network are still visible today. The acute shortage of fresh water led to great deprivation, disease and death among the early miners. Today, the water problems faced by the mining industry are thankfully not as severe, but they are nevertheless no less challenging. The southern part of the WA Goldfields is a notoriously difficult area for finding potable quality groundwater. Even as recently as the 1990s, there were occasional serious efforts to find potable groundwater in that area, some very imaginative and innovative. One mining company, working south of Southern Cross, spent many months experimenting with recovery of potable quality water from a shallow freshwater lens overlying hypersaline water in a low permeability weathered granite aquifer. They used very low capacity pumps manufactured from car windscreen washer pumps powered by solar panels.

The last decade has seen a major increase in use of the discrete fracture network (DFN) approach applied to cave mining problems, often integrated within more complex geomechanical simulations. Because the value of the DFN model directly depends on the quality and quantity of available field data, there is the need to apply dedicated mapping procedures to collect sufficient structural data at the required engineering scale. This paper attempts to address several key questions about DFN modelling; for example: are current methods for fracture mapping suitable for DFN modelling? What are the critical parameters that we need to measure and what do we need to change in the current practice? Particularly at the earlier stages of a cave project, engineers may have to account for the lack of appropriate data, which manifests itself in the form of increased uncertainty and the difficulty to characterise variability in an objective manner using a limited set of data. DFN models could in principle be generated using limited data by assuming statistical distributions for the sampled parameters; however, engineers would need to be aware of the implications that such limited knowledge (and increased uncertainty) would have on stability analysis, fragmentation analysis and mine design. There are a number a stages in a project at which an audit must, or should, be undertaken. An independent audit may be necessary for the comfort of directors and/or financiers before the major finance is committed, but an internal pre-development audit is the opportunity for the management team to take stock of the project and reaffirm their confidence and commitment. Maxims for project success are given and a check list for pre-development audits is presented. The need of mid-development audits may arise and their brief will depend on the circumstances arising. A game theory approach to decision-making is demonstrated in which the alternative of fast-tracking a development is considered. At the conclusion of the project, before the team is disbanded, a post-development audit should be made. Valuable learning can come from this process which could give important guidelines for future projects and a check list is presented.

Landscape interpretation, geology and mining history are being successfully used to explore options for sustainable community tourism product development. Recent work by the author in Europe and Australia has indicated the value of adding and producing interpretive information about mine and quarry locations û both active and inactive. This work has allowed for the branding and development of new sustainable community tourism products based on the landscape, folklore, mine and geological heritage. Communities in rural areas are seeking new opportunities to sustain their local economies. Using a relatively new phenomenon called geotourism as a starting point, they have developed themed products connected to walking/cycling guides, interpretive panels and visitor centres. These themes can be linked to geology, archaeology, botany, local history and to industrial heritage sites such as old mines, to generate local employment. This new geotourism approach has successfully brought a new and greater audience to discover the value of geology and mining history. Communities have established a unique place for themselves within the tourism marketplace using the geotourism brand. Other communities with an established tourism product are also now using geological and mine heritage via geotourism to rebrand and meet changing global trends. The geotourism approach has allowed for positive collaboration among communities, service providers, local and government authorities to channel tourist revenues into rural communities. The pooling of resources under the banner of geotourism has led to cost-effective marketing, targeting and promotion of products using multimedia and web sites. Geotourism has emerged strongly in Europe, North America and China in the last decade. The Australian minerals industry now has an opportunity to implement this new branding concept to assist and benefit the communities in which they run their activities. Communities can also take advantage of the potential to develop a sustainable geotourism business around a past or present mineral industry in their vicinity.

Mineralogical, chemical, and isotopic data have been obtained for samples from 11 volcanoes and 4 kortlandite intrusives on Kamchatka.Similarities and differences in ore-bearing and barren intrusives are discussed. Differences in sulphide mineralization and sulphur isotope compositions of intrusives are explained in terms of the "auto-sulphurization" hypothesis which involves the redox conditions of the host rocks. possible role for carbon in nickle sulphide ore formation is also considered.

The papers in this section of the conference and indeed the conference as a whole will rightly focus on the recent û the state of play around the Pacific Rim. However, to set the scene I propose to take a longer-term perspective. In so doing I wish to illustrate and emphasise that change is normal and natural û to paraphrase Bob DylanÆs 1963 classic, æThe times they are (always) a-changinÆ Æ. The challenge is how to cope with such change, in an industry, a corporate and a personal sense. A further challenge for geologists, both exploration and mine-based, and indeed for anyone, is to understand where they fit in the broader picture. For several reasons it is appropriate first to look briefly at the minerals industry in the Pacific Rim around a century ago. It was here in Adelaide in April 1893 that the first general meeting of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers (or The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy as it later became) took place and where the Centenary Meeting was held in 1993. The late 1800s and early 1900s was a period of extraordinary change in the minerals industry regionally and worldwide. The industry benefited from the economies of scale provided by improved mechanisation. It further benefited from the introduction of technically qualified professionals, such as chemists, metallurgists and mining engineers, although the usefulness of geologists had yet to be recognised commercially. With the rise of such professionals, technical societies formed and flourished. At the same time international financial markets and trade were expanding, a gold standard was widely supported and the financing of mining ventures was well established. Mining was an international business and its people travelled widely. As a consequence of the better-educated mining professional, the ready exchange of knowledge and the availability of finance, new processing techniques such as pyritic smelting, the cyanide process and flotation were developed. These, together with much improved materials handling in the mining and processing phases, dramatically changed the economics of the minerals industry.

Partnering has come to prominence in the Australian construction industry in a formal sense this decade. The high level of disputation in the building and civil construction industries in the 1980s drove its development in both Australia and North America. PartneringÆs use has been most prominent in the construction industry, particularly in the civil and construction sectors of the industry. It has found favour in some mining development projects, one of the most notable being BHP MineralÆs Cannington project in NW Queensland. This paper examines the requirements of successful partnering agreements and describes in detail the mine development partnering agreement at Cannington. In particular, the paper discusses the authorÆs experience and recommendations for partnering to avoid contractual problems and achieve win û win project outcomes for all parties to major mining projects.

THE machine from which the following results were obtained makes one of a row of seven at work in the Junction North, Concentration Mill at Broken Hill, New South Wales. It consists essentially of a belt for dressing purposes, which travels round two 12-in drums situated at either end of a wooden frame. This frame is supported on wooden legs, and the whole is affixed to two iron castings, one on either side of the frame. A to-and-fro motion is obtained from an eccentric shaft, which, together with the stationary end of the supporting legs, is carried by the iron castings. A belt drive to the forward drum provides a constant rate of travel to the dressing belt.The top half of the dressing belt is supported on 3-in rollers spaced about 12-in centres along the frame of the vanner. A fairly thick dressing belt is used, and no trouble whatever is experienced from the formation of gutters between the rollers.These belts are 28 ft 4 in long, 4 ft wide, 3-16 in thick, and are made of two-ply 32-oz duck, with a coating of rubber on either side. The surface available for dressing is about 10 ft 6 in x 3 ft 8 in- ie, about 38'5 square feet. The machine is driven atthe rate of 245 i-in strokes per minute, while the dressing belt travels at 15 feet per minute...

Economically significant gold-silver mineralization occurs in Miocene andesitic flows and tuffs at Golden Cross, eight kilometres northwest of Waihi, New Zealand. The highest grade mineralization occurs in a steeply dipping elongate zone of strong quartz veining and brecciation underlying, but contiguous with, a gently dipping tabular quartz vein stockwork containing potentially open-pittable lower grade gold-silver mineralisation. The stockwork zone is enveloped by argillic alteration and overlain by unaltered Pliocene andesites and recent tephra. Evaluation of the prospect involved underground and surface geologic mapping, rock and soil geochemistry, IP-resistivity, magnetic and gravity surveys as well as 1844 metres of reverse circulation drilling and over 30 000 metres of core drilling. The paper outlines the exploration history of the area and describes the results of the various exploration techniques used at Golden Cross.

Technological advances evolve in different ways; many are the result of years of application of scientific method. i.e. Observation Deduction Hypothesis Proof In the mining industry, better explosives, drill bits or reagents are likely to evolve in this way. The scientific method is suited to the application of conventional management structures. Other advances are simply the result of a "brainstorm", or building a better mousetrap. Such inspiration probably resulted in "Split Set" rock bolts, or the first use of a vacuum cleaner principle for shaft mucking. Individual consultants can apply lateral thinking to generate such inspiration. In gathering material for the presentation of this paper, I sent a.letter to all members of the Mineral Industry Consultants Association asking them to nominate problems in the industry requiring investigation. The answers have been divided into two classifications - contract research underway and identified problems requiring solutions.
