Hydrocyclones are widely used in both mining and various industrial sectors. Considerable fundamental research work on the modelling of hydrocyclone classifiers has been carried out through the past 25 years. Based on the similarity principle, the hydrocyclone classification was taken as a whole physical process and a group of similarity numbers were obtained with the help of dimensional analysis in this paper. Then, the functional dependences of the similarity numbers have been established. The variables optimisation was carried out with the multiple objectives linear planning programs developed in this study.

This paper explores the techniques and issues in the acquisition and analysis of mine production data for tactical decision making in production control. The use of information and operations management tools is presented in the context of block caving studies, with particular focus on the relationship between secondary breaking and LHD production performance.

The capabilities of the three 61R and one 81R Robbins Raiseborers currently in use at Mount Isa are defined. Their applications in the development of ventilation and hoisting shafts, orepasses, escape routes, fill passes etc. are described and possible future uses of these and newer raiseborers at Mount Isa are examined. Problems associated with the use of raiseborers, together with ways of overcoming them are discussed. The impact of raiseborers on the mining operation is assessed in terms of new approaches to design and development, safety, cost and manpower efficiencies.

In the early stages of opening up a mine, when there is some uncertainty as to its future career, necessitating caution in laying out works of a permanent character, the want is often felt of an assay furnace, easily built and easy of transportation, should the" mine " prove to be " no mine." Again, cases occur in which parties buy the right to treat comparatively small heaps of tailings, and then shift their plant to other localities. Under these circumstances it is necessary to restrict the plant to the barest necessaries, to suit, so to speak, the nomadic character of the work.An assay furnace that is really portable, easily transported, erected, taken down, of little weight, always ready for action on short notice, is indeed in these cases a desideratum which has long been wished for. The gasoline furnaces introduced intothe Australian market some time since practically fulfil these conditions; but they have the fatal drawback of being dependent on a constant supply of the liquid fuel, gasoline, which is seldom, if ever, obtainable locally in' any wayback mining township...

HiTec Energy Ltd has been conducting research since 1996 into novel process routes for the treatment of low-grade and waste manganese sources for the production of high value and high quality electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) for the alkaline battery market. HiTecÆs approach is to treat previously unsaleable manganese deposits and mine site tailings using a novel sulfur dioxide leach route, followed by purification and electrowinning to generate the sought-after EMD product by an environmentally superior processing route to those presently practiced throughout the world today.HiTec Energy Ltd expects to be in commercial production with its Stage 1 facility in Kalgoorlie in the last quarter of 2004 for the production of 12 500 tpa EMD. With this production facility being adjacent to a laterite nickel producer with available waste manganese units, the opportunity arose for HiTec to combine its existing technologies with processes (that will be discussed in this paper) to turn two waste by-products into products that are used for high-tech purposes.HiTec Energy Ltd and the Parker Centre have had a collaborative research relationship for a number of years in areas involving EMD and battery related technologies. Meanwhile the solvent extraction (SX) group of the Parker Centre (CSIRO Minerals) has developed SX processes to separate manganese from nickel and cobalt. A project was initiated by HiTec Energy to recover manganese from waste laterite leach solutions using SX technology. Batch tests were conducted to select a suitable organic system for the extraction of manganese in terms of selectivity and extraction and stripping kinetics.A total of eight organic systems were tested by determining pH isotherms of metals using a laterite nickel process waste stream. Two organic systems, the Versatic 10 and Versatic 10/synergist systems, were chosen for further test work with Shellsol D70 chosen as the diluent for both systems.The Versatic 10/synergist system would be advantageous over the pure Versatic 10 system because fewer SX stages are required, resulting in a smaller organic inventory and lower capital costs. The risk of gypsum formation is also significantly lower with the synergistic system.

Computer-controlled microscopes with digital image acquisition and analysis led to the creation of the new field of digital microscopy. These techniques not only allow a certain degree of automation but have also brought new possibilities to microstructural characterisation. One of these new and promising possibilities is co-site microscopy, which links different kinds of information obtained from different microscopy techniques. The present work presents the development and implementation of a co-site microscopy methodology that combines images obtained by reflected light microscopy (RLM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This methodology can improve the SEM analytical capacity by adding colour information from RLM. It involves the whole sequence, from image acquisition at the microscopes to the analysis of the phases using pattern recognition techniques. An automatic registration procedure for the two kinds of images was developed, allowing the adjustment of magnification, translation, rotation and pixel size, and the correction of local distortions. Thus, the images from RLM and SEM can be combined to build a multidimensional data set of each field, which can then be used in a pattern recognition approach to discriminate different phases. The methodology was tested with a copper ore sample, aiming at the discrimination of minerals that are not distinguishable with either RLM or SEM.

This paper describes a multi-lift bench stoping method introduced recently to extract the narrow silver-lead-zinc orebodies at the Isa Lead Mine. Cut-and-fill methods were chief mining methods for the narrow orebodies at the mine over 35 years ago. Benching methods were introduced approximately two decades later, and quickly replacing the cut-and-fill methods. The benching methods had improved both the economy scale and safety of the mining operation. The multi-lift benching method combines a number of bench lifts into a single stope to further improve the operational efficiency. Three stopes in the initial multi-lift benching trials are described.

Preliminary experiments have shown that, when used in a fusedchloride electrolyte, titanium carbide anodes dissolve yielding lower titanium chlorides which nlay be electrolysed in situ to produce a cathode deposit of pure titanium metal. The anode residues are easily withdrawn from the cell. Further experiments have established the operating conditions for maximum efficiency in the process.The process is essentially two-stage, viz.: (1) titanium carbide production, (2) electrolysis producing metal. Power requirements appear to be moderate and this fact, combine·d with the simplicity of the process make it attractive as a possible method for the production of titanium.INTRODUCTIONDue to the high reactivity of titanium and its, affinity for oxygen and nitrogen, the extraction of this metal generally involves the use of halide. compounds as intermediates. The Harima works were established in 1964 and started operation in 1966. The initial capacity was 3500 t/month of zinc and 1500 t/month of lead. Until 1990 a lot of improvements had been made and the capacity had increased 6600 t/month of zinc and 2200 t/month of lead without enlarging the furnace size. During the ten weeks campaign shut-down at the end of 1990, many modifications were carried out including the enlargement of the furnace shaft area. By these changes, the capacity has gone up to 7500 t/month of zinc and 2500 t/month of lead. In the sinter plant, the amount of SO2 rich gas supplied to the acid plant was raised to 50 000 Nm3/h from 43 500 Nm3/h. An electrostatic precipitator was adopted instead of a venturi scrubber to clean the rich gas. Oxygen enrichment has been continuously operated since August 1991, because the furnace capacity is more than the rate of sinter production. Utilisation of the sinter plant is high being as much as 97 per cent and the sulphur burning rate has been increased. In 1990 the furnace was replaced except the hearth. The shaft area was enlarged to 19.4 m2 from 15.3 m2. The target blast was designed to be more than 36 000 Nm3/h. Tuyere layout was changed to prevent slag breakouts. Due to these modifications shaft condition has been very good. Automatic launder jacket cleaners were installed to increase the lead cooling efficiency. Many other improvements and developments were also made. Coke powder injection from the tuyeres has been successfully operated since April 1987.

The presence of clay minerals slows down the settling rate and mitigates compact consolidation efficiency in tailings dewatering. The increasing use of saline water in many plants, affects the dewatering performance and presents the mining industry with new concerns. Efficient tailings dewatering is a great challenge due to the complexity character of tailings, especially clay mineralogy, clay content, and water chemistry. In this study, existing studies of the effect of different affecting parameters, such as pH, ionic strength and polymer flocculants, on clay aggregation behaviours are reviewed. The settling behaviours of three types of commonly observed clay minerals in tailings, kaolinite, bentonite, and illite, are also investigated in saline water with different water salinity as a case study. The settling rates of clay minerals are found to be affected by water salinity, clay type, clay content and polymer dosage levels. High salinity water hinders the settling of kaolinite but assists the settling of bentonite and illite through formation of different aggregation structures.The current work has indicated that strategies to promote more rapid dewatering could include adjusting flocculant type or level, water salinity and salt balance, and tailings solid content levels. Implementing dewatering strategies may require a more detailed knowledge of the effect of surface chemistry on the nature and strength of the clay inter-particle forces. This study discusses the research gaps on how to better manage clay-rich tailings in saline water and identifies new research directions. The development of a water management model, supported through in-line monitoring data to predict and manipulate of the surface chemistry of the clay component of the tailings could be a new direction to manage the issues associated with clay minerals in the process of dewatering and tailings management. THE object of this note is to set forth some particulars of the effect of light on cinnabar occurring in a deposit of this mineral at Puhipubi, in the North Auckland peninsula of New Zealand. This deposit is contained within a gently-inclined sheet of siliceous sinter forminga hillock called Mount Mitchell, and is particularly notable in that it is an instance of the simultaneous deposition of cinnabar and silica on a large scale. The mercury-bearing material varies in character from semi-porous sinter to dense translucent cbalcedony, of which the former is stained to various shades of pink, the latter to brilliant reds and vermilion. On exposure to daylight-and particularly to sunlight - these colours change to corresponding shades of translucent bluish-grey. As a direct result of this change the Mount Mitchell deposit remained unknown until some ten years ago, for, while prospectors early discovered cinnabar in the adjacent city and in a neighbouring stream bed, none of them recognized this mineral in the bluish chalcedony strewing portions of the surface of the Mount. The writer has carried out a series of experiments designed to indicate the cause and nature of this change, and to form a basis for the elaboration of more delicate experiments which would yield positive information. Circumstances, however, have so far combined to prevent the continuation of the research, and, as there seems little prospect of the writer being able to do more work on the subject, it seems well to publish the data so far obtained. Prior to describing this colour change, the writer would point out the desirability of restricting the meaning of the term cinnabar to the naturally occurring red sulphide of mercury; this would eliminate the ambiguities which arise from its indiscriminate application, in chemical literature, to both natural and artificial sulphides. Further the term cinnabarite having long since fallen into disuse, there appears to be no good reason for retaining the companionterm "metacinnabarite" when reduction to "metacinnabar" would preserve the meaning in a less clumsy word.

An asymmetrical floating point Array Processor is a special-purpose Scientific Computer which operates under asymmetrical control of a host Computer. Although an Array Processor can receive fixed point input and produce fixed point output, its primary mode of operation is floating point. The first generation of Array Processors was oriented towards time series information. The next generation of Array Processors has proved much more versatile and their applicability ranges from Petroleum Reservoir simulation to speech synthesis. Array Processors are becoming commonplace in Mining, the primary usage being construct- ion of grids - by usual methods or by Kriging. The Australian Mining community is among the world's leaders in regard to computer-assisted Exploration and Exploitation Systems. Part of this leadership role must be providing guidance to Computer vendors in regard to current and future requirements.

The recycling of metals can be very efficient with careful selection of the material being recycled. The volume and value of recycled ferrous scrap has lead to the development of steel mini-mills which in turn has caused major changes to the steel industry. Although much smaller in volume, the recycling of lead is very significant, with battery recycling accounting for 60 per cent of annual world production. This high recycle rate can be attributed to the relatively uniform feed-stock from lead-acid batteries. The recycling rates of other metals are considerably lower due to longer use and non-uniform product usage that results in less efficient segregation and processing. It is clear that recycling of metals has advantages but its sustainability is uncertain. What are the key benefits of metal recycling? Metal recycling has technical, economic and social impacts. It is relatively easy to assess recycling on a technical basis, but the social impacts are harder to evaluate. This paper examines some of the issues in evaluating the sustainability of metal recycling.

This paper describes the behaviour, under creep conditions, of a cast lead creep specimen consisting of five crystals, the boundaries of these crystals being substantially at right angles to the direction' of tension, i.e., across the long axis of the specimen. This particular specimen was obtained in an attempt to produce a single crystal in the manner described in the appendix of a previous paper (1).Thus, the specimen was of the same shape and size, was composed of the same purity lead and received the same preliminary treatment as the single crystal test-pieces.The object of the experiment was mainly to observe the effect of the crystal boundaries on both the deformation of the test piece and the process of recrystallisation and to compare the creep rate of the test-piece with that of a specimen consisting of one crystal only.EXPERIMENTAL METHODThe specimen had an effective test length of 10 cms. and a cross $ection of 0·5 in. x 0·25 in. In Fig. 1 is given a sketch of the specimen to scale showing the positions of the crystal boundaries on all four surfaces. Considerable improvements in diamond drilling equipment have been made since the early 1950s. A recent drilling programme, however, at Williamtown, near Newcastle, carried out by the Joint Coal Board on behalf of the Electricity Commission of New South Wales, emphasized deficiencies in existing equipment when particularly diflkult coring conditions were encountered.Spurred by unacceptably low recoveries in coal seams in this area, the Joint Coal Board devised and developed, with the assistance of the Electricitv Commission, a new typc core lifter and a special 26 ft triple tube core barrel, designed to operate in conjunction with it in bad coring conditions.The core lifter, whieh is propped open clear of incoming core during drilling, is activated by fluid impulses generated inside the core barrel. It can be used with double tube barrels when drilling firm rocks whichdo not change diameter by compaction inside the barrel.Softer rocks. such as clayey types, require the use of a rriple tube barrel.Results from testing carried out to date in difficult areas in New South Wales coalfields have shown that greatly improved results can be obtained with the new equipment. Although developed essentially for coaldrilling, the new core lifter and barrel could be adapted to other fields of diamond drilling. Even in areas where no great coring difficulty is encountered the cost advantage deriving from the greatly inereased life of the core lifter and the adaptor in which it is housed could justify its use.

A new flotation method is introduced for separating zircon from rutile and other Ti-bearing minerals at normal temperature, using a mixture of cationic and anionic collectors without any acid, alkali or fluoride as regulators. By combining the method with gravity concentration and magnetic separation to process the seabeach placer, the technological flowsheet can be simplified and the pollution of environment and the corrosion of acids, alkalis and fluorides on equipment can be removed.

Polarization phenomena associated with the use of an agitated bed of particles as an electrode for metal deposition were studied. The concentration polarization at this type of electrode is much smaller than that occurring at a fixed or moving electrode surface. Agitated particle electrodes can be used to electro-reduce copper from solutions over a wide range of concentration and at cur·rent densities up to 2000 AIsq. ft. of bed cross section.

While a per onnel location system is primarily used to check that nobody is left in the mine at firing time, it is also useful for contacting people, uch a foremen, shiftbosses and tradesmen, who travel over several mine levels during a shift. The system installed at The Zinc Corporation, Limited, Broken Hill, uses punched coded plastic identity tags, with "In" and "Out" tag readers on each level. When entering a level, the employee inserts his tag in the "In" reader, and when leaving, in the "Out" reader. Each reader is connected to a central computer which shows who is still in the mine and their location.The system has been used on 3 levels by 21 men for a trial period of 4 months. It ha proved reliable in an underground mining environment, and employee acceptance has been good.
