BHP has recently constructed a Hot Briquetted Iron Plant at Port Hedland in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Supply of iron ore fines to the plant is by conveyor from the companyÆs existing Nelson Point stockyards. The conveyor passes under Port Hedland harbour in a concrete segmentally lined tunnel, approximately 1030 m long and with a 5.1 m external diameter. The tunnel was constructed by a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) which both excavated the ground and erected the tunnel lining. The tunnel was bored between cut and cover in situ concrete portal structures, the TBM being launched from the Finucane Island side towards Port Hedland town. The alignment required lengthy gradients of 1:6 on either side of the harbourÆs dredged channel, under which the tunnel is bored with a minimum clearance of 8 m.The tunnel is fitted-out with:1800 mm belt conveyor capable of 10 000 tph;walkway along which a specially designed inspection/ maintenance vehicle can run; andtunnel services including power, light, fire detection and suppression communications, water mains for wash down and sumps and pumps for drainage.This paper gives a general overview of the design and construct contract, important aspects of the design and the construction process itself.

The influx of an industrial environment into or adjacent to the indigenous society has in the past frequently caused the breakdown of traditional be- haviour and culture, and the generation of social and psychological impacts on the local population. Successful programmes developed by government agencies and private industry have been implemented in many areas to maintain the cultural environment and still afford the needs for industrial development. The ultimate goal of such programmes should be directed toward eventual operation and management of the established industry by the local population.

The value created in any mining operation is a function of the mine plan. The quality of this plan is dependent on the strategies employed during definition drilling, resource estimation and mine planning. This paper presents opportunities to improve the value of an operation through better strategic management of these core activities. Gold and copper mineralization in the Parkes area is hosted by a meridional sequence of Late Ordovician to Early Silurian igneous and sedimentary rocks on the central northern edge of the exposed Lachlan Fold Belt. The mineralized area straddles two zones separated in part by the Parkes Thrust and exhibiting different styles of deformation and mineralization (Figure 1). The western zone is characterized by gently folded rocks, with shallow dips and weak to non-existent axial plane cleavage. Faulting is restricted to directions oblique to bedding. Numerous occurrences of minor copper mineralization are known, but of recent national importance is the discovery of the Coradgery- Goonumbla porphyry copper-gold deposits by Geopeko Ltd. A resource in excess of 250 million tonnes has been delineated (Jones, 1985), and this represents the first porphyry deposit of sufficient grade and tonnage to be potentially mineable in New South Wales. The eastern zone is much more strongly deformed. Folding is tight with strongly developed axial plane cleavage. Faulting is abundant both parallel and oblique to bedding. Quartz veining is also abundant, and a narrow belt of gold mineralization adjacent to the Parkes Thrust stretches from Forbes in the south, through Parkes and Peak Hill, to Tomingley in the north. Over 31 tonnes of gold have been produced from this gold belt, mostly before 1914, and now three deposits show good potential for redevelopment - Peak Hill, and the London-Victoria and Lachlan lines of lode.

It is a great honour to be privileged to address The Institute for a second time as President and I appreciate it more than I can say. Eight years ago in Hobart I tried to cover the development of the mineral industry in Tasmania. That was a general subject. Tonight I want to be more specific - I propose to talk to you about rutile.The choice of subject for a Presidential Address is never easy. One is addressing an informed audience and the best one can do is to try to crystallize a particular subject and to present it in a form that willbe of interest to those who listen.I looked carefully at the addresses given by our Presidents over the past seven or eight years. The titles are impressive, the content excellent, and the length, as published, much greater than I had hoped.It is therefore with some trepidation that I have chosen as a subject one only of the three crystal forms of titanium dioxide. This subject is not as limited as may at first appear.There are two aspects with which I can deal - the mineral itself, which has become familiar as the major product of the East Coast beach sand operations, and the lesser-known "synthetic" product, which is the major pigment in almost all the white paints in common use today, and in cosmetics and white-walled tyres and toothpaste, and even the better types of fine papers. The synthetic form of rutile is' the "whitest"of white pigments.

It is difficult with inadvertent explosions to establish fundamental data, especially of original dust, of pressure, temperature etc. and of ventilation oscillations, as exposed personnel rarely survive. Retrospective data from explosions must be derived from damage, from fatalities, from ventilation analyses, from analyses of dusts and other indications of temp- erature and duration of temperature. The five disastrous explosions selected for analysis provide examples of what data can be established as to the cause and extent of explosions. Such information is required for legal etc., inquiries subsequent to explosions, but most importantly to give the best guidance for avoidance of possibility of further Disasters.

Continuous monitoring of mining impacts on the surrounding environment is a necessary sustainability criterion. Traditional monitoring approaches such as in situ sampling and airborne and satellite-based remote sensing have several limitations. Over the past few decades, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have evolved into popular platforms for remote sensing. UAV-based remote sensing has been successfully applied in different sectors, including agriculture, forestry, urban environments and disaster management. However, the potential of UAVs for mine environmental monitoring has not yet been fully established. The New England Fold Belt forms the easternmost and youngest section of the Tasman Fold Belt System of eastern Australia. From middle Palaeozoic to Early Cretaceous time it was the site of extensive episodic calc-alkaline magmatism related to W-dipping subduction. The oldest rocks may have formed at least partly in a volcanic island arc, but from the Late Devonian, the fold belt developed as a convergent Pacific-type continental margin. For Late Devonian-Carboniferous time, parallel belts representing continental margin volcanic arc, forearc basin and subduction complex assemblages can be recognised. Major dextral transform faulting may have offset parts of the fold belt in the Late Carboniferous. In addition, some structural blocks which appear to be out of place in the overall palaeogeographic setting are possible exotic or suspect terranes. A great variety of lode deposits ranging in age from middle Palaeozoic to Early Cretaceous is present in the New England Fold Belt. The vast majority of these are related to emplacement of extensive granite plutons and eruption of continental silicic volcanics in Late Permian-Late Triassic time. However, volcanogenic massive sulphides and volcanic hosted epithermal gold-silver deposits in older rock sequences include one major orebody (Mount Morgan) and several important ones (Mount Chalmers, Cracow, Silver Spur, Cangai and Halls Peak). Some problematical deposits are best classified as metamorphic-hydrothermal. These include gold-bearing quartz reefs and stockworks in sedimentary host rocks, the most important of which are at Gympie, and antimony-gold- tungsten mineralisation in the New England area, mainly at Hillgrove.

Ore reserve reporting practices in the United States may be broken into four general categories as follows: ò Reserve reports, often of an unofficial and preliminary nature, which are made through the news media. These are often based on exploratory drilling or sampling results. ò Reserve reports made for the purpose of raising public funds by issuing securities on the stock market, or as part of other filings to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. ò Reserve reports to obtain private funds from banks, financial institutions, or other investors. ò Reserve reports for internal use and planning by companies operating or evaluating mineral properties. This paper discusses current practices for each of these types of ore reserves reports and reviews recent changes which have affected those practices.

Models of the genesis of existing ore oodles and targetting of exploration for new mines are greatly enhanced by an-understanding of the plate tectonic environment existing at the time of mineral emplacement. In areas of recent or active tectonism, a study of the present-day crustal and upper mantle structure is an obvious starting point in unravelling the evolution of the accessible upper crust. Bougainville is the northern-most island in the Solomon Islands arc. A 7km deep trench almost 100km off its western coast marks the commencement of subduction of the Solomon Sea plate beneath the Pacific plate. As outlined by the seismicity, the subducted crustal slab under the southern half of Bougainville reaches the axis of the island at about 100km depth, from which point it dips near vertically another 300km into the upper mantle. Large surface blasts at the Bougainville Copper Mine at Panguna, Bougainville, Papua New Guinea were used to derive an unreversed upper crustal profile of the island. The crust appears to be relatively simple, being comprised of a 5km deep layer with a P-wave velocity of 4.5km/sec, overlying a l0km thick layer with a P-wave velocity of 7.2km/sec. Constraints on the 15km mantle depth were provided by the identification of both P to and S to P phase conversions of seismic waves from local shallow earthquakes at the Moho boundary. An upper mantle velocity of 7.95(¦ 0.15) km/sec was measured from travel times of selected shallow earthquakes along the strike of the island arc.

William Frederick McBryde Broun, a graduate of the Royal School of Mines, was employed on the staff of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company for some years prior to 1912, and will perhaps be remembered by some of those who attended the Mount Morgan meeting of the Institute in 1910, as an Associate Member present on that occasion. He severed his connection with the Mount Morgan Company in 1912, and was returning to England via the East Indies, when he contracted typhoid atSingapore and died at Colombo.Years later some old papers were being turned out in the office where he had worked, when a set of M.S. notes in his unmistakeable handwriting came to light. On examination these appeared to be the rough draft of a paper he must have beenpreparing for the local branch of the Institute, which he had not been able to complete. The notes were very rough. Apparently it was the author's intention to fill in numerous gaps with extracts from sundry published articles on Cornish mining; theextracts were missing and only the written portions linking them together were there. They give a sketch of Cornish mining practice which those who wish may supplement (as the author would have done) from Le Neve Foster and other well-knownsources. The fragmental notes which have been pieced together as carefully as possible by Mr B G Patterson, Hon Secretary Mount Morgan Branch; are as follows :-The first mine the author worked at was Carn Brea, in 1904."This is one of the largest tin mines in Cornwall, and belongs to the Carn Brea and Tincroft Mining Co, which also owns Cooks Kitchen. The Western Australian School of Mines is continuing to investigate the blasting techniques and mining strategies that are used for ore/waste separation (or high grade/low grade ore separation) or to prevent ore and waste mixing. The aim of all the mining strategies is to produce an optimum product. The optimum product is one which contains no diluent and undergoes no mixing of the various identified ore and waste blocks and is fully recovered at the minimum overall operating cost. The current study includes the use of computerised Knowledge Based Systems (KBS) technology to assist the user with the blast technique selection and blast design process. These aspects are highly dependent on the geology. (geometry, rock mass properties, grade distribution), explosive performance and the expectations of the mining company in terms of production rates and equipment utilisation. Most of these factors are not well defined and nor are they easy to quantify. However, a large amount of knowledge does exist and is available in the following forms: rules of thumb, empirical formulae, engineering judgement and past experience. KBS techniques are well adapted to handle such"forms of knowledge. The primary objective of this paper is to illustrate an approach for the use of Knowledge Based Systems during the analysis and interpretation stages of the blast design process. In particular, the components and methodology of the developed system are described for selective open pit gold mining. The Knowledge Based System developed was written using the declarative programming language PROLOG.

Structural geological modelling is a process which results in a 3D computer model that represents the essence of the geological and structural understanding of an area and is presented in a way that is directly useable, typically by internal customer groups. BHP Iron Ore operates a number of open cut iron ore mines in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia. The largest mine is the Mt Whaleback Mine located at Newman close to the southern margin of the Pilbara Craton. The structurally complex Mt Whaleback Mine is the largest metalliferous single pit open cut mine in Australia with over 1.6 billion tonnes of original iron ore resource. Additional to the Mt Whaleback Mine, a number of satellite open cut iron ore mines are operated by BHP Iron Ore (BHPIO) in the Newman area. BHPIO also operates the Yarrie mine approximately 400 km north of Newman at the northern edge of the Pilbara Craton Most of the BHPIO mines are located in the Archean- Proterozoic Hamersley Province that overlies the Archean granite-greenstone terrain of the Pilbara Craton. The orebodies are considered to be the result of supergene enrichment of the approximately 2.5 Ga Brockman Iron Formation and the slightly older Marra Mamba Iron Formation. Folding represents the most prevalent and penetrative structural element in the Newman area. Four folding phases have been identified regionally (Fj, F2, F3, F5), while a more local folding deformation (F4) developed mainly in the Mt Whaleback and Orebody 29 mine area. A northeast trending, southeast dipping, 45 km long, high angle, normal fault zone, the Whaleback Fault Zone, cuts through the Mt Whaleback mine resulting in an approximately 1400 in gap in stratigraphy. Additionally, two large, low angle, normal faults, the East Footwall Fault and the Central Fault, are present at the Mt Whaleback Mine. During the formation of supergene orebodies, up to 40 - 45 per cent volume loss occurred resulting in local non-tectonic deformation in the orebodies.

Numerical modelling is an effective aid for the planning and design of underground coal mines. With funding from the National Energy Research Development and Demonstration Program, CSIRO Division of Geomechanics has produced a workstation environment which will allow the Australian Coal Mining Industry access to a wide range of numerical design models. The emphasis is on usability and simplicity and the long-term aim is that the techniques should be used routinely at the mine site, so that, in the future, design of a new underground mine will routinely involve modelling of each proposed layout.Each of the five numerical analysis programs, FESOFt, FLAC, MNLAY, FEBLK and UDEC has both strengths and weaknesses. Some analyses with each program demonstrate areas when; observed in situ behaviour in underground coal mines has been successfully modelled, and the results of site monitoring provide a basis for comparison with the predictions of numerical models.

The Bunga Beds of the Late Devonian - Boyd Volcanic' Complex is a well exposed succession of rhyolite, sedimentary rocks and minor basalt outcropping along the south coast of New South Wales. The sedimentary rocks vary from shallow water basin margin facies, to deep-water basin centre facies, and the majority of .the volcanics are associated with the deep water facies association. The volcanics are dominated by rhyolite domes, lavas and cryptodomes, whose margins are extensively autobrecciated and quench fragmented. In situ pyroclastics represent a very minor volcanic component and are restricted to the remnants of two small doors- top tuff cone successions. Pyroclastic debris is common in the sedimentary succession enclosing the volcanics and was clearly derived from shallow to emergent basin margin areas through mass-flow redeposition. The succession has bearing on the origin of the fragmental component of, the volcanics that host Kuroko- type massive sulphide deposits. The characteristics of these fragmental volcanics are not well documented. We suggest that based on the Bunga Beds,'Kuroko-type volcanic successions are dominated by coherent rhyolite/ felsic lavas and intrusive domes, autobreccias and hyaloclastites, that in situ pyroclastics are rare or lacking, and that redeposited volcanic debris is abundant. Pyroclastic debris is most likely to have been derived from shallow areas marginal to the deep-water volcanic centre that produce the Kuroko-type volcanics and sulphides.

The Shagou deposit is located along NE-trending faults within the high-grade metamorphic basement of the Xiong’er Terrane in the Qinling orogenic belt. It is a large Ag-Pb-Zn deposit hosted in the Taihua Supergroup and has proven reserves of 1.54 Mt of ore with grades of 767 g/t Ag, 13.24 per cent Pb and 4.31 per cent Zn. The hydrothermal ore-forming process can be divided into early quartz-pyrite, middle quartz-polymetallic sulfides and late quartz-carbonate stages. Four types of fluid inclusions (ie pure carbonic, carbonic, pure aqueous and aqueous) can be distinguished in quartz. Fluid inclusion, hydrogen, oxygen and sulfur isotope systematics indicate that the ore-forming fluids are initially deeply sourced metamorphic water with meteoric water gradually mixed in the later stages. Sulfur isotope data show that the ore-forming fluids originated from both the Taihua Supergroup and the sedimentary successions of the Guandaokou and Luanchuan Groups (CSC) located to the south of the Machaoying Fault. A genetic model of the Shagou deposit is proposed as follows: CSC subducted northward along the Machaoying Fault beneath the Xiong’er Terrane during the Mesozoic collision between the North China Craton and South China Block. Subsequent dehydration resulted in the devolatilisation of fluids rich in CO2. These fluids migrated upwards, reacted with the Taihua Supergroup and formed the Shagou deposit.CITATION:Han, J-S, Yao, J-M and Chen, H, 2015. GHD-Black & Veatch (GHD-BV) have completed design and specification of the ash thickening plant at Tarong Power Station, including operation of a pilot plant. Construction of the plant is in progress and commissioning is planned for early-2004. The objective of the new plant is to convert the low concentration (lean phase) ash slurry currently generated by the power station into concentrated slurry which will then be pumped to the existing ash dam. Water recovered from the lean slurry will be returned to the power station for reuse. The drivers behind this project are to extend the life of the ash dam and to reduce water pumping costs. A maximum flow of 1000 litres per second is expected in the thickening plant. The process involves a screening phase, which removes large material that could cause blockages or equipment damage. A 50 metre diameter thickener then concentrates the screened lean ash slurry to 55 - 60 per cent w/w solids. In addition, the thickener plant will allow the harvesting of floating cenospheres (hollow, spherical ash particles) from the lean slurry. Cenospheres are currently collected from the surface of the ash dam and drained on a pad adjacent to the dam. The new system will use a surface skimmer to remove the cenospheres from the thickener and transfer them to settling ponds for further classification. The settling ponds simulate the detention on the existing ash dam, and allow entrained fine ash and slow settling cenospheres time to settle. As settling occurs in ponds, the slow settling cenospheres can be completely recovered whereas when they settle in the dam, the opportunity for recovery is lost. Cenospheres are a valuable by-product produced during the combustion process, and recycling of this material reduces the waste generated by the power station. Water recovered from the thickener drains to a three megalitre reservoir. Water is drawn from the reservoir for thickener plant service water and various other uses in the power station. The bulk of the water is used to sluice ash from the power station to the thickening plant. In the current configuration, surface water from the ash dam is reused but must be pumped several kilometres back up to the power station. The dam also holds an inventory of several thousand megalitres of water and has significant evaporative losses. Therefore the current raw water make up demand is substantial. In addition, some areas of the power station traditionally using raw water will be modified as part of this project to allow the use of recovered water, further reducing the raw water demand. The design incorporates many features of sustainable water management. By more effectively recovering water from the lean ash slurry, the amount of raw water make up required by the system will be significantly reduced. This method of water recovery provides a more sustainable and energy efficient ash-transport mechanism.

The Great South Basin is located beneath the northwest part of the Campbell Plateau, a+broad, nearly level, triangular shaped submarine platform, southeast of the South Island of New Zealand. It encompasses an area of 77 700 square kilometres and contains a sequence of Cretaceous to Tertiary sedimentary rocks which are up to 6000 metres thick near the centre of the basin (Shirley, 1983). The western boundary of the basin is adjacent to the steep Aucklands Slope. In the+ north it merges with the Canterbury Basin and to the south onlaps against the Pukaki Rise, a basement high. The eastern margin of the basin is bounded by the northeast - southwest trending steep linear Antipodes Scarp. In the extreme south the Antipodes Scarp curves westward and joins the north trending Aucklands Slope. The Campbell Plateau is dominated by tensional tectonics. The Antipodes Scarp represents a major region of transcurrent faulting initiated by Cretaceous rotation within the Campbell Plateau. Later movements are associated with the Alpine Fault of the South Island (Sandford, 1980; Anderton, Holloway, Engstrom, Ahmad and Chong, 1982).

In mineral asset valuation the use of any valuation method requires the input of competent and independent technical professionals. A resource valuation must be as transparent as possible to allow others to assess the validity of their underlying assumptions. Materiality is a dominant factor in all valuations and a valuer should set out the basis for the subjective decisions made in this regard. Any valuation methodology must comply with the requirements of the law, practice notes and guidelines issued by the various relevant authorities and professional bodies. The valuation methodology chosen to value a mineral asset depends upon the amount of data available on that asset and the reliance that can be placed upon those data. Mineral assets generally fall into one of three broad categories, depending upon their state of development, ie whether they are at the exploration, development or operating stage. Naturally there are transition phases. Hence, there are ""Grass Roots"" Exploration Areas and Advanced Exploration Prospects; Pre-Development Projects and Developing Mines; and Operating Mines. The features of each of these mineral asset status categories are described, mainly in terms of the confidence in the contained identified Resources/ Reserves. The various subjective methodologies available for the valuation of ""Grass Roots"" Exploration Areas and Advanced Exploration Prospects -are specifically reviewed. The pitfalls in adopting a ""recipe"" approach are noted. It is the author's view that the Expected Value Method (based on the probability adjustment of the output of a Discounted Cash Flow/ Net Present Value model) has little application in the valuation of exploration mineral assets, so it is only briefly addressed. The methodologies reviewed are listed below. ò Multiple of Exploration Expenditure Method (expenditure based). ò Joint Venture Terms Method (expenditure based). ò Geoscience Rating Methods (eg Kilburn - area based). ò Comparable Market Value Method (real estate based). ò Rules of Thumb (eg $/Resource or production unit; % of in situ value). Some recent Prospectuses are used to provide examples of their misinterpretation and misapplication.
