With the next mining boom looming, the industry will once again struggle to meet skills needed as the current generation boomers are set to retire. In order to meet these needs it is going to need to focus on what underutilised human resources - in particular women - want!   Women comprise around 14 per cent of the mining workforce, compared with a 45 per cent participation rate in the work force overall. Within the industry, women still make up only one per cent of trades people, eight per cent of operators/production employees, 12 per cent of engineers and 11 per cent of executive management.   It may be worth pointing out that mining has an age profile skewed towards the older end of the spectrum. When it comes to employee retention, what women want may be a good starting point to examine, more broadly, what all employees might want (but are too afraid to ask!).   Women in mining want the following: To be scrutinised for their work and performance, not their personal lives, appearance or relationships. True pay equity. This is addressed at lower levels between companies but at professional levels the salary differentials begin to appear and little is done to identify why this continues to be the case. Recognition and acceptance that women can have different work-styles, and that diversity of work-styles is an asset to be nurtured not a threat to be neutralised! Recognition that a more diverse workforce demographic that better reflects society at large will assist the company in its dealings with many diverse stakeholders from society at large. For employers to recognise that a career break to accommodate caring responsibilities does not mean that an employee's commitment to progressing their career is any less than that of someone who has not taken a career break. Similarly, for employers to recognise that working part-time for to accommodate caring responsibilities does not mean that an employee's commitment to progressing their career is any less than someone who works a more traditional roster. Access to affordable and quality child care compatible with mining rosters in mining towns. Zero tolerance for bullying and harassment, and workplace cultures that promote respect and safety. Fission track thermochronology is a well established method for reconstructing the thermal histories of rocks with particularly important applications in tectonic studies, detecting low-grade thermal events, sedimentary basin analysis and resource exploration. These applications take advantage of the limited stability of fission tracks, especially in apatite, when exposed to the temperatures found in the upper 3-4 km of the crust. Apparent fission track ages in apatites can define an invisible 'stratigraphy' in otherwise homogeneous rock masses that can give valuable information on thermal, tectonic and erosional events. Quantitative modelling of the thermal annealing of tracks in apatite shows that distinctive profiles of apparent fission track age can be related to a number of simple thermal history styles. The main types of profile observed tend to be either an essentially linear decrease of apparent age with increasing depth, which relates to continuous uplift and denudation, or a concave-upwards profile produced by partial annealing in environments of tectonic stability or burial. More complex thermal histories produce compound profiles which are essentially just combinations of these two elements. Track length information allows the apparent age profiles to be interpreted in much greater detail. Examples of the major profile types have now been identified in various geological environments and can be analysed to give information about, for example, uplift and denudation rates, the timing of uplift or low-grade thermal events and maximum palaeotemperatures experienced during burial.

The Chatree deposit is located in the central portion of Loei Fold Belt, which extends from Lao PDR in the north through centralThailand to Cambodia in the south. Epithermal gold-silver mineralisation at Chatree occurs as veins/veinlets and stockworks with minor breccia in volcaniclastic and volcano-sedimentary rocks of andesitic to basaltic andesite composition and Permo-Triassic age. This preliminary oxygen isotope study mainly focuses on vein quartz of Au-Ag bearing mineralization (Stage 2) and a few samples of late Stage 4 quartz ¦ calcite veins. Quartz from Au-Ag bearing mineralisation has oxygen isotope values ranging from 8.1 to 12.3ë with the lowest values generally occurring at the deeper level (140 m below the surface). The late barren quartz ¦ calcite veins (Stage 4) tend to have higher oxygen isotope values ranging from 11.9 to 12.0ë. The oxygen isotope composition of the Chatree ore fluids were calculated at 250¦C, 300¦C and 350¦C based on homogenisation temperatures of fluid inclusions. The calculated oxygen isotopic composition of the Chatree ore fluid ranges between -1 and 6ë that overlaps with both meteoric and magmatic compositions. This shift in oxygen isotope compositions may relate to processes such as water rock-interaction and/or mixing of meteoric and magmatic fluids. It is interesting to note that the lowest quartz oxygen isotope values are spatially more or less confined to the prominent structures in the centre of the major ore zones. These structures may have been acted as conduits for higher temperature magmatic fluids. The quartz oxygen isotope values increase outwards from the centre of the main ore zones to the margin of the pits possibly due to mixing of magmatic fluids with lower temperature meteoric water. Whole rock oxygen and hydrogen isotope studies are in progress to investigate isotopic trends in the wall rock away from the ore zone. The systematic variation of oxygen isotopes in quartz from the mineralised veins and adjacent wall rocks could potentially be used as a vector to ore. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Gladstone Hill, a volcanic-hosted low-sulfidation epithermal prospect in the Coromandel Peninsula, is less than 1 km from the world-class Martha Hill Au-Ag deposit. Gold-silver-bearing quartz veins occur in Late Miocene andesitic volcanic rocks of the Waipupu Formation that are extensively altered. The occurrence, spatial distribution and temporal relationships of hydrothermal minerals have been determined along two cross sections that transect the Amaranth, Gladstone, Cowshed and Moonlight veins. Quartz and pyrite are ubiquitous along these sections. Adularia and chlorite are widespread, but both are scarce in wall rocks adjacent to the Moonlight and Cowshed veins. By contrast, rare hydrothermal albite and epidote are restricted to wall rocks surrounding the Amaranth vein. Illite, which replaces adularia, is widespread and grades laterally eastwards into a zone of interstratified illite-smectite that envelops the Moonlight and Cowshed veins. During late-stage hydrothermal activity, rare calcite formed at depth and uncommon kaolinite and alunite formed at shallow levels. The overall clay mineral zonation with illite grading eastward into interstratified illite-smectite reflects paleothermal gradients of >220¦C to -170¦C towards the margin. The alteration assemblage of quartz, adularia, chlorite, albite, epidote, illite, interstratified illite-smectite and pyrite reflects formation from a near-neutral to weakly alkaline pH chloride water that contained low concentrations of CO2, Late calcite formed from very local descending steam-heated CO2rich water, whereas the rare assemblage of kaolinite and alunite formed from shallow steam-heated acid-sulfate water. Analysis of the available data indicates that the Martha Hill deposit and the Gladstone Hill area formed within a single large geothermal system. We infer that the Martha Hill deposit formed in the main upflow zone, whereas the Gladstone Hill area may have formed adjacent to this upflow zone.

Byproduct coking is practised in three of the major Australian ironmaking centres, the Newcastle and Whyalla works of the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. and the Port Kembla works of Australian Iron & Steel Pty. Ltd. Coking first commenced at Newcastle in 1915 and at Port Kembla in 1938. The installations established at these centres include coal cleaning facilities and com- plete byproduct streams. The Whyalla plant, because of its location is somewhat less extensive, having no coal cleaning plant and a comparatively restricted byproduct section. As new batteries have been built every opportunity has been taken to incorporate modern design features and improved operat- ing techniques. This has included the provision of equipment to reduce atmospheric and water pollution. A marked reduction of markets for byproducts has had serious repercussions on the profitability of this section of the Industry.

Dimension stone is the term generally given to rock used in building construction. During early European history in Otago, locally available dimension stone products were easily obtained. Crude rock shelters built on river banks with schist rock within Central Otago soon gave way to more established and sophisticated permanent homesteads constructed with the same materials. Victorian architectural achievement is celebrated in Otago with many fine bluestone block buildings. When the University Council decided to build substantially in stone, it narrowly escaped disaster. It was well known at the time that brick in Dunedin was of an inferior quality and that it soon wasted. Rev Dr Stuart said before the 1879 Commission that æthe Council had some old-world notions and liked to have the University with some architectural styleÆ. Contemporary utilisation of dimension stone is generally restricted by expense to a simple veneer. Stone products produced from Otago quarries have found ready markets in other areas in New Zealand , particularly prior to the share market crash in 1987.

Further exploratory drilling led to the discovery of the Marlin gas field in December 1965, the Kingfish oil field in April 1967 and the Hblibut oil field in June. 1967. In September 1968, a small oil reservoir was found in a sand below the main Barracouta'gas reservoir. The Snapper gas field was discovered in May, 1968 Information on exploration activities associated with the discovery of oil and gas in the Bass Strait area may be found in the paper, "Exploration in the Gippsland, Bass and Otway Basins, Australia" by B. M. Hopkins. _ Development of the commercial fields is being undertaken on an equal participation basis by Hematite Petroleum Pty. Ltd. and Esso Exploration and Production Australia Inc. Esso Standard Oil (Australia) Ltd. is responsible for the design, construction and operation of the production facilities.

The kinetics of cementation of silver chloro-complexes from sodium chloride solutions onto copper and zinc was studied using rotating disc electrode system. The activation energies were found to be 10.8 and 30.5 k7/mole, in a 3M NaCl solution on copper and zinc discs, respectively. Higher dissolution factors were obtained on zinc disc, due to hydrogen evolution, whereas, copper dissolved close to the predicted values. Scanning electron microscope studies were conducted both on copper and zinc- cdiscs-to evaluate the deposit morphology and its effect on reaction kinetics. Two stage deposit growth was observed both on copper and zinc discs. Smooth, coherent initial deposit followed by tree-like secondary dendrites formed on copper, whereas, scattered bulbous initial deposit followed by porous dendrites was typical on zinc disc.

The evolution of the Oaky Creek mining complex provides a good example of the mining cycle in practice. Oaky Creek has been innovative in its choice of mining methods, with virtually the full range of coal mining methods having been used as workings have progressed down dip. The history of the mine is traced through its development (and ownership changes), progressive selection of mining methods as depths of cover to seams being mined have increased, and rehabilitation. This allows the different mining methods to be described and illustrates the concept of æwall-to-wall miningÆ.

Of the world's total production of gold the largest proportion comes from the more regularly consistent ore bodies, but in the aggregate an important part comes from those which are often irregular, uncertain and small. These smaller ore bodies are often high in grade and, as the capital required to work them is not large, they appeal to people seeking a quick and profitable return for a small outlay.These small mining concerns cannot afford detailed geological and petrological investigations and mapping, so they are very often dependent on local knowledge and experience which admittedly may be of really great value.Nevertheless the absence of skilled guidance may not only cause good opportunities for intelligent exploration to be lost, but discourage the seach for other ore bodies.lVIining engineers in the course of their travels in the examination of mines often come across such cases and also others where problems of finding lost ore bodies have been solved by the man on the spot. As records of cases are valuable and useful additions to the knowledge of ore occurrences, the writer now proposes to describe one such case coming under his observation in recent years.It is that of a small mine, known as the Idaho, at the southern end of the famous "Golden Mile" at Kalgoorlie (see Fig. 1). This mine has been a small and very erratic producer ever since it was abandoned by an English company which owned it forty years ago. There are a number of different mechanisms by which wetlands can immobilise the metals in mine drainage. Here, the biogeochemistry behind four of these mechanisms (adsorption, biological uptake, precipitation as oxyhydroxides, and precipitation as sulfides) is discussed from the perspective of sustainability. Moreover, treatment wetlands are considered as part of a larger system, also taking into account the source of the drainage and various aspects of the receiving waters. The biogeochemistry of different metal immobilisation mechanisms in wetlands determines what kind of drainage can be treated with success, and it also places an upper limit on the amount of metal that can be removed from the water phase per unit of time. This has important implications for the design of treatment wetlands, perhaps particularly in colder climates. A thorough understanding of the prevailing biogeochemical processes is essential when attempting to establish treatment wetlands after the closing of a mine. If a wetland is to be used as a sustainable æwalk-awayÆ solution, the anticipated change in treatment efficiency over time (as pollutants accumulate in the system) must be considered in relation to the expected changes in drainage quality. It is also important that the total metal immobilisation capacity of the wetland is not exceeded and that the integrity of the system is maintained, in order to minimise liberation of previously immobilised metals.

The reduction of titanium tetrachloride to trichloride can be achieved by employing hydrogen and electric arcs. It is possible to produce melts containing up to 50% TiCk in the eutectic mixture of LiCl/KCl by striking a D.C. arc at the surface in the presence of hydrogen and TiCl. vapour. If the electrode IS made to just penetrate the surface of the salt mixture, a hot zone results from the' high resistance contact with both lower chlorides and sintered titanium may be produced. The sintered metal forms just below the melt surface while the trichloride forms at the gaslIiquid junction.The "hotspot cathode" appears to offer a solution to the problem of producing coherent deposits as the spong'e metal can 'be continuously withdrawn in a similar manner to the "calcium process".INTRODUCTIONConsiderable interest has been shown for some years in the possible development of a cheap electrolytic process for the extraction of titanium metal, since a method using simple materials and cheap electric power would materially reduce the cost of production. Even when cheap starting materials are used, however, there exist several general difficulties in the operation of plant which both limit the speed of production and increase the cost of the product. It happens that most of the techniques so far tried produce a powder as cathodic deposit, and when this is the case the following difficulties arise:1. The whole contents of the bath must be treated with solvent in order to extract the 'metal powder which may itself tend to oxidise, and thus become contaminated.2. Fine metal powders, which often contain residual entrained salts, are less easy to consolidate by arcmelting than metal sponge.

P754 has been an unusual project in that its main aim was to develop a code of practice for metal accounting with the following key objectives:Development leading to an agreed industry standard at corporate governance level Significant improvement of the credibility of metal accounting from deposit to saleable product Development of guidelines for data collection, data analysis, reporting and audit A data analysis toolbox which provides go/no go testing for metal balance data Promotion of industry adoption of these guidelines to improve transparency and financial credibility. Over time, these guidelines may evolve into a code and eventually into a standard Develop and train engineers to become expert in metal balancing and reporting. Papers like this one and the workshop which follows this conference are part of promoting the code for adoption by industry. Developing a code of practice has traditionally been the provenance of professional bodies associated with particular industries û often on a voluntary basis. Given todayÆs industry pressures, it was felt that funding key input might accelerate the development process as well as offer opportunities to research some of the problems and to train some post graduate students in a difficult discipline. In fact, the project has brought together six industry sponsors from a wide range of process types, three research providers, and funded students in South Africa and Australia. The project has also attracted input from the financial community. A textbook to support the application of the code has also been written. The industry sponsors have made the Code and Guidelines available on request to help to facilitate its use by the mineral industry beyond the sponsor group. The Code and Guidelines have already been translated into Spanish and Portuguese which suggests that industry acceptance may happen quite quickly. The main thrust of the code is to integrate commercial and technical performance to a much higher degree. The Check in-Check out (CI-CO) method has been chosen as the vehicle for this combined approach. The mass and metal values used for CI-CO are 'absolute' and provide the basis of financial transfers. The CI-CO process occurs at each transfer of custody - whether between divisions within a company, or between companies. This approach means that measurement of mass and metal flows becomes the critical element of the process and that a quantitative knowledge of measurement accuracy and precision is also essential. This knowledge allows technical differentiation between differences which are within the expected margin of variation and those which must be formally identified as discrepancies and subject to a process of investigation and sign off. Hence, the application of the code for most companies should be more evolutionary than revolutionary, but with substantially more emphasis on measurement and definition of measurement error. Where this can be achieved, it should bring the mineral industry more into line with other industries competing for investment funds, community acceptance and future employees.

The successful implementation of sublevel caving (SLC) at Ridgeway Gold Mine (Ridgeway) requires the technical aspects of caving and flow behaviour to be understood. Cave propagation must be controlled and continuous to allow safe extraction of ore below. The understanding and use of processes to manage granular flow behaviour are also required to ensure economic metal resource recovery. Caving and flow technologies are thus critical to the economic viability of the application of the SLC mining technique to Ridgeway Gold Mine. At the time the Ridgeway SLC design was approved there were significant technical uncertainties associated with cave mining methods, including the SLC mining method in competent rock masses. This was in spite of the fact that caving is a relatively low cost mining method. Unique features generating technical risks at Ridgeway include: the fact that the orebody is blind (550 m below surface); highly competent cap rock (RMR >50); and high aspect ratio (height to width ratio of 3:1). Due to the presence of these unique features Ridgeway is considered to be beyond the current state-of-the-art in SLC mining technologies. The success of the technique at Ridgeway to date has indicated that blind SLC mines in strong rock mass can be operated safely and productively, if the technical risks are understood and properly managed. The risk management process was defined by the use of a formalise process to identify and assess the risks to the mine. The major mining related risks were formalised into Major Hazard Management Plans (MHMP) which contained a description of the risk, early triggers indicating the creation of a hazard and a series of agreed responses to be automatically initiated in the event of each trigger occurring. This paper outlines the following with respect to the critical technology areas of caving and flow: international industry, state-of-the-art technology; gaps in the application of this technology; the application of risk management, new processes developed at Ridgeway to bridge these gaps, including issues encountered; and trials and experimentation conducted to develop the new processes.

In November, 1975, Aberdare North colliery was sealed at the surface to extinguish an open fire underground.The fire had developed from a spontaneous heating in one of the open goaf areas of the mine.The mine was re-entered with normal ventilation methods following the isolation of the working district containing the fire. The isolation was accomplished by remotely sealing the open roadways with lly ash emplaced through boreholes from the surface. A subsequent re-entry operation similarly closed the roadways close to the fire and enabled the re-opening of the sealed district.Most of the mine and the underground equipment was recovered after clearing of numerous falls and production recommenced on 25th October, 1976.

If an orebody has been drilled to achieve some level of regulatory compliance, then a number of associated geological databases will exist, representing 10 000 to 100 000 m plus of core intervals. The databases usually contain data about assays, lithology, mineralisation and geophysical attributes. They will also include location information such as collar positions and downhole surveys. Obviously this data is collected by geologists for, predominantly, geologists and mining engineers. However, from a process design viewpoint process engineers usually ignore the geology where possible and rely on a small number of metallurgical test samples. Typically these test samples are sourced from convenient and available cores or from a small number of specially drilled metallurgical holes. One of the worst instances known to the author was the design of a SAG mill using only two SAG specific test results (one for each of the major ore types) while, geologically, the orebody was defined by more than 30 000 m of drilling. This paper sets out a philosophy to maximise the use of the geological data, both for process design and in preparation for the commissioning phase of projects. Geological data is used in the identification of preferred locations for metallurgical test samples, for checking the metallurgical validity of the geological ore-type definitions, where necessary developing new ore-type definitions (geometallurgical domains) and developing mathematical relationships for the estimation of important metallurgical factors across the geological database. If the estimation of factors (for example ore competence) is considered reliable enough then there is also the possibility of feeding calculated data back into the block modelling process to allow the generation of metallurgically relevant outputs in the mine plans.
