The Merrill-Crowe process for gold and silver recovery yields a low grade concentrate containing high levels of zinc and copper. External refining charges and high transport costs prompted the company to establish itsown enrichment facility.The route chosen was a wet chemicaltreatment which converts the gold, silver and other metals to their chloride. This is achieved with hydrochloric acid and sodium hypochlorite. Gold is recovered from the resulting filtrate by cementation with copper.The solid residue from the gold process is washed and treated with ammonia which dissolves the silver chloride. Mill operators are entrusted to manage what are normally the largest capital assets on any mine site. Achieving maximum utilisation and lowest costs that drive operating margins are realised by applying well known fundamentals of good housekeeping and proactive (as opposed to reactive) maintenance programmes. Historically, maintenance and operations staff are bought in late during the construction stage and often do not have the time, know how or tools to put in place (let alone train the incumbent staff) a functioning maintenance system before commissioning starts. They then get drawn into a reactive maintenance paradigm as teething problems post commissioning are dealt with and day to day issues envelop the line tradesmen and supervisors. Additionally, even when some semblance of a planned maintenance system is established, it is often the case that over time personnel and cultural issues mask the development of problematic maintenance practices. As has been observed by the authors on many occasions, even when some basic programmed maintenance system is in place, the collection of maintenance data is often inaccurate, incomplete and not subject to analysis. The net result is of course a high incidence of machine failure leading to lower than expected availability, which ultimately translates to lower revenue and higher net maintenance costs. The time taken and the cost to repair a failed machine is always greater than the timely and planned repair of a worn machine.Upon review of a number of processing plants around the world, especially gold and small base metal operations, it is apparent that companies need to implement maintenance systems whereby the operators are not overwhelmed with data and can manage by exception. Inadequate or inaccurate data collection and analysis result in poor decisions being made and misguided actions taken. GR Engineering Services (GRES) has developed a system to enable the custodians of mining plant assets to make more effective and effective use of maintenance data by being able to focus on the indicators of plant deterioration and to programme concurrent maintenance activities to maximise plant availability and utilisation.This paper outlines the structures that can be employed to address the challenges of implementing a proactive asset management system. The gold-scheelite-quartz lodes of the Wakamarina valley were the most productive of the mesothermal gold-bear in the Marlborough Schist. Most of the production came from the Empire City and Golden Bar mines which worked tug, Golden Bar lode. Only 134 m of its 1800 m strike length are accessible, in the No. 2 level of the Golden Bar Mine. A fau I has downthrown the Golden Bar Mine section by 2 47 m and displaced it left-laterally by 18 m. The lode is a typical ribbon-banded mesothermal vein, averaging c. 1.75 m wide, and enclosing narrow horses of schist country rock. It i composed of bands of milky "buck" quartz with thin laminae of schist. Scheelite occurs in short strings of grains withi quartz on the footwall side of the lode and also in small quartz-carbonate veinlets in the foot wall and hanging wall schist The lode quartz contains only localised traces of pyrite and arsenopyrite. They are more abundant in the wall-rock schist.

Permian oroclines in eastern Australia must have formed by sliding on a detachment surface. It is identified as a westward- dipping Devonian and Carboniferous sub- duction zone. Major strike-slip faults probably sole out on the same surface. One major fault with an associated serpentinite belt was pulled away from the craton abd bent into loops. Basins formed in the loops.

The Closure Risk model was developed as a new tool to aid decision makers in the complex area of mine closure. It uses a simple analytical technique that allows the decision maker to simplify what is often a complex mine closure process into more easily managed sub components. This systematic approach ensures that critical factors in the closure process are not overlooked. It also allows the most important issues to be highlighted. The model can also be used to produce quantitative estimates of risk by weighting and prioritising the issues to produce the Closure Risk Factor (CRF). Field trials at several mine sites in the Northern Territory of Australia in 2001 tested the model. The trials confirmed that the model has significant potential as a tool for decision-makers to assess in a structured, systematic manner, the major closure risks at individual mine sites. The risks include not only environmental impacts but safety and health, community, legal, financial, technical and other issues. The trials confirmed the value of a team-based approach and the inputs of key staff including environmental, production, mine planning, and community liaison personnel as well as mine management. Although the usefulness of the qualitative component of the model was established, it was found that, due to the influence of subjectivity, the utility of the prototype model to determine quantitative risk was of limited value. Using a continuous improvement approach, improvements to the model were sought. A refined model, incorporating the Australian Standard 4360 definition of risk and facilitated in-house risk assessment sessions was developed and tested against the data obtained in the field trial. This model, while maintaining the qualitative strengths of the original, allows more accurate absolute and relative quantitative scores to be calculated. This in turn facilitates comparisons between the issues at a single site as well as between different mines.

Substantial efforts by the industry, as well as by process and equipment designers, have resulted in many innovative developments that provide cost effective reductions in water usage. This paper showcases four emerging best practices in industry including examples of recent installations. Belt press filters are a small fraction of the operating and capital cost of alternative ædryÆ tailings technologies. This gives operators who must ædryÆ their tailings a competitive advantage and makes such operations much more sustainable. The new generation of belt filter presses use less energy, produces lower cake moistures and better disposal stacking properties. The need for tailings storage facilities may be eliminated or in some cases high-grade tailings can be dewatered and sold as a low value product. Mining applications include sand tailings, sinter plant waste, coal tailings and power station fly ash. Flip-flow screening machines are proven worldwide in the dry classification of coal and other minerals, reducing the size of beneficiation plants, whilst reducing energy, water demand and media consumption. They also allow the screening of wet/sticky materials not able to be sized using conventional screens. Lamella separators are used for toxic water clarification and/or sludge thickening in many downstream metal industries with the underflow often dewatered in a belt filter press. Such low cost, high capacity thickeners could also be used instead of conventional thickeners at smaller mines. The simple and reliable continuous washing upward flow (CWUF) sand filters have been used for treatment of waste water from coal preparation plants and steel works as well as in the production of potable water. The filtered waste water from mining processes can then either be reused or discharged from site. Other installations include cleaning mine water to prevent the blocking of dust suppression spray nozzles.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Elaine Dorothy Cu-Au (REE-U) skarn deposit in the Mt Isa Inlier, Queensland, Australia is characterised by extensive metamorphic calc-silicate hornfels long before hydrothermal skarn and complicated deformation history. The deposit is hosted by the Corella Formation (1780–1740 Ma) and exhibits two phases of skarn formation in the study area – banded fine-grained diopsidic hornfels (Phase 1) and coarse-grain pyroxene skarn (Phase 2). Phase 1 skarn is predeformation and is interpreted to have been caused by the 1743–1734 Ma Burstall Magmatic Suites, whereas the coarse-grained pyroxene skarn (Phase 2 skarn) postdates the deformation and peak metamorphism events. Phase 2 skarn consists of prograde pyroxene, less garnet and titanite, retrograde epidote, REE-allanite, amphibole, biotite, and later sulfides, carbonate, quartz, anhydrite and chlorite. It hosts most of the copper mineralisation, with the REE elements occurring mostly in allanite. Titanite coexisting with allanite and Cu-Fe sulfides in Phase 2 skarn has been dated by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) at 1524 ± 9 Ma (207Pb/206Pb). The ages are similar to Williams-Naraku Batholiths, which outcrop approximately 40 km to the east in the Eastern Fold Belt. In Elaine Dorothy, the isotopic compositions for calcite cluster around 12.2‰ d18O and -3.7‰ d13C. It probably resulted from a mixing processes between marine sourced carbon-oxygen (ca 20‰ d18O and -0.5‰ d13C) and other distinct geochemical reservoirs, eg magmatic C-O. These features indicate that Phase 2 skarn and Cu-Au (REE-U) mineralisation may be related to unexposed intrusions at deeper levels.CITATION:Sha, P, Spandler, C and Chang, Z, 2015. Reclamation field trials commenced in 1985, two years before the granting of the Mining Licence. The level of pasture production on varying soil depths (0 cm, 5 cm, 15 cm and 25 cm) overlying both tailings and oxidised waste overburden was assessed. After seven years, the rate of increase of N, C, P and S, losses of S and P and pH changes were investigated on the plots where grass seed was sown into bare tailings. It was determined that on these plots it would take approximately 24 years to reach the original carbon and nitrogen levels at the mine site.

The experience gained in the development of an Operator Guidance System (OGS) for on-line process control and fault diagnosis in a commercial scale sintering process will be discussed in this paper. The OGS development started with the specification of feasible control and support tasks, eg ratio control scheme, mass balance calculations. Next, minimum requirements for fault diagnosis and process control were defined and the adequacy of existing instrumentation was assessed. The OGS knowledge base consists of both quantitative and qualitative diagnosis methods. Quantitative models based on fundamental engineering principle are used first and any gaps in such quantitative knowledge are then filled with heuristic rules. The diagnostic rules for the knowledge base was developed based on the knowledge acquired from experienced operators and operations engineers and validated with plant data. A real time reasoning program was written using C language and data base software. The OGS has a human-computer interface which is the primary means of interaction between the OGS and process operator. The OGS development has been successful in assisting operators in decision-making in their routine tasks. Further enhancement to the existing system is currently underway.

Different types of lump iron ore-bearing particles were investigated in terms of their raw material properties depending on their behaviour during reduction. To predict the reduction behaviour different types of lump iron ore and pellet brands were characterised by their mineral abundance, texture and pore size. The image processing software VisuMet was developed to semi-automate the evaluation of photomicrographs from polished sections of lumpy iron particles. The results were compared to the standard reducibility test after ISO 4695. The evaluation of lump iron ores is based on the simulation of the transformation of the different iron minerals due to their sequence of reducibility. The progress of the reduction front is simulated and the result is a degradation curve. Pellets were also investigated due to their different pore size distribution. The results indicate that the pore size influences the reducibility in addition to mineral abundance. The evaluation with VisuMet of the lump iron ore and pellet samples correlates with the reducibility provided by the ISO 4695 test. The determination of the mineral abundance by VisuMet is comparable to common point counting with a correlation coefficient of 99.67 per cent.CITATION:Kain-Bückner, B and Mali, H, 2017. There is approximately 240 000 tonnes of arsenic trioxide dust stored in underground chambers at the Giant Mine in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. To minimise the amount of arsenic released to the environment, a number of closure alternatives are being considered. One alternative is to mine the dust, encapsulate it and dispose the mixture into a secured landfill. The potential leaching behaviour of the encapsulated dust was examined in a laboratory programme. Cylinders of arsenic trioxide dust mixed with cement/aggregate and bitumen were prepared. The dust content varied between zero per cent and 60 per cent of dry weight charge. The cement cylinders were tested for strength, leaching and freeze/thaw durability. The bitumen cylinders were tested for leaching only. The results show that increasing dust content in the cement cylinders negatively impacts the strength and the freeze/thaw durability of the samples. A contributing factor is likely the high water to cement ratio in the samples. Leaching tests show that arsenic release from cement cylinders increase with increasing dust content. Arsenic concentrations in leachates do reach a plateau at a certain point in time. Arsenic release from bitumen cylinders was significantly lower compared to cement cylinders. Arsenic concentrations eventually were less than 0.05 mg/L in samples containing up to 25 per cent arsenic trioxide dust. Arsenic leaching rates were found to decrease by an order of magnitude over the course of three months.

There are particular implications, processes and main experiences of coalmine modernisation in China.Ensuring a coal output of over one M tonne/yr from one coalface is a very complicated system-engineering project which deals with a wide range of problems. The most important measure used for achieving an output of over one M tonne/yr from a single coalface is the analysis of affecting factors on coalface production by means of the theory c reliability. Thus, as far as possible , the production stoppages caused by mechanical equipment failures and other factors are avoided, the equipment recovery rate is increased and the working hours of shearers are extended so as to ensure a high output and high efficiency.

The properties along Ida Avenue in Mosman stand 10 m above the road on an outcrop of Sydney sandstone. Access to the houses is generally via a long steep staircase. The owner of 22 Ida Avenue identified an opportunity to use the natural strength of the rock beneath his property to excavate an underground garage and to provide access to the basement of his property via a 10 m elevator shaft from the back of the garage. This paper will describe the design and construction of this unique and innovative urban development.

Open stope mining is the most common mining method employed in underground, hard rock mines in Canada. It is characterised by relatively small, single lift stopes (20 000 to 100 000 tonnes), and fast stope turnaround times. Host wall rock mass conditions, which are typically poor to fair, are the controlling parameter in stope dimensioning. Rock mass stability is maintained by designing all stope surfaces at a stable dimension, and through extensive use of cablebolting for stope backs and frequently stope hanging walls. Dilution control is a high priority. The typically small, high-grade, deep and irregularly shaped orebodies are incrementally developed, usually in a bottom to top direction. In many cases, high stress is encountered due to the depth of the orebodies. Overstressing of pillars and hanging pillars are avoided through the use of pillarless or early pillar recovery mine sequencing strategies. Stopes are invariably filled, and in higher grade and wider orebodies, cemented fill is commonly used. This paper generalises many of the similarities found in Canadian open stope mines.

'Nothing happens until something is sold' This statement is not original - it is a necessary orientation for marketing industrial minerals. The most important single philosophy of marketing is that it recognises the consumer as the starting point. Production orientation is concerned with producing products that the customer might buy. Market orientation is concerned with finding the needs of the customer and how they can be satisfied. The difference between the two approaches can be recognised in company structures but the most tangible difference is in the approach by a company to selling and development. In other words, it is the market that decides what can be done with a mineral. The markets requirements dictate what mineral, what grade and what price will be paid. Therefore it follows that when pricing a product we should avoid taking the basic cost and arriving at a final selling price through a series of standard markups (unless government insists on it). We should start with the price the market can stand and work backwards to find out whether you have a profitable product or one that will fail because it is too dear. Naturally a thorough understanding of production costs is necessary particularly when marginal markets are concerned.

The properties of bearing metals are of considerable interest to mine engineers, since continuous running of mine and mill machinery is of vital importance. Of the several available types of bearing metal, the low melting point lead or tin base alloys are most generally used in mining plant because of the ease of replacement and the possibility of remelting scrap metal from old bearings. The most valuable property of these "white metals," however, is the plasticity which gives a self-aligning character to the bearings, enablingthem to adjust themselves to inequalities which may exist at the time of fitting, or which may develop during running. The object of the present paper is to explain in general terms the physical structures of white bearing metals, and to point out that constitution rather than composition determines the physical properties of these alloys. The same, indeed, is true of most engineering alloys. In steels, for example, a change in the structure may affect the properties to a far greater extent than a change of chemical composition.Structural changes in steels are produced chiefly by heat treatment. Mr. P. F. THOMPSON said this matter was one of very great importance to producers of lead. His association with the matter was that he happened to be the Institute representative on the Committee of the Standards Association of Australia charged with formulating a standard for chemical lead, that is, lead used in technical chemistry for acid chambers and the like. The British standard had this test incorporated in it, but those on the committee felt that it should not be included in the specification. The main objection was that in an accelerated corrosion test one was endeavouring to do in a few seconds what in natural conditions would take years; and it was now being recognised that such tests were of little value in assessing the corrosive properties of a metal.The flash point test was carried out with boiling hot strong sulphuric acid; but no chemical manufacturer would be likely to use such in contact with lead. There were many factors such as the formation of steam, the chemical reduction of sulphuric acid, the evolution of hydrogen, the catalytic effect of the surface lead, affecting this test, other than the presence of the segregated impurities upon which this test throws the onus of the whole imperfection of the lead. Mr. Russell had shown that lead which had stood the test of time often gave a low flash point. They were endeavouring to find rapid methods of estimating minute amounts of the more important impurities, which would eliminate the labour and expense of a full analysis.Mr. H. St. J.
