THE Broken Hill mining field, approximately 31 miles in length, is at present being exploited by seven companies, viz. : North Broken Hill Limited, Junction North Broken Hill No Liability, Broken Hill Proprietary Block 14 Company, Broken Hill ProprietaryCompany Limited, Sulphide Corporation Limited, Broken Hill South Limited, and Zinc Corporation Limited.The variation in size and shape of the ore-bodies in the mines of these companies, together with the many alterations in pitch and dip, necessitates differences in methods of mining, each company working out its problem in its own particular way.In the matter of chute construction for the handling of the ore broken in the stopes, each mine belonging to the above companies has adopted a style particularly its own, though it may be said that one or two of the types approximate very closely to each other, slight minor differences only being noticed in the design. It is the purpose of this paper to give a brief description of the principal types of chutes now in use in th,e various mines on the field, and in doing so they may roughly be classified into three groups, viz:1. Bulk Chutes, 2. Circular Chutes, 3. Square-set Chutes.The Bulk type of chute is used in the North and British mines of the North Broken Hill Limited, the Central and Junction mines of the Sulphide Corporation, the South Blocks mine of the Zinc Corporation, and the Block 14 mine.The Circular type of chute is used by the Broken Hill South mine and the South Blocks mine.The Square-set chute is used in the Proprietary mine, the Junction North mine, and occasionally in other mines where the square set method of mining is a necessity, and more particularly as mullock passes.

The paper continues an account, begun in a previous paper, of experimental work carried out by the author whilst a member of the metallurgical staff at the Cockle Creek Works. The general method of the description of the plant and works practice adopted previously has been followed.The paper is a short account of the methods used in and the results of an investigation of the fume losses from the various parts of the plant.MEASUREMENT OF VOLUMETwo independent methods were used. The first depended on a number of pitot-tube measurements of velocity. These readings were taken in the stacks leading from the various furnaces at a considerable height above the ground so as to obtain as regular conditions as possible at the points where the readings were taken.Three openings were made in each stack and the pitot tube inserted into each opening in turn and readings taken at the centres of imaginary areas of equal size. The average velocity in the stack was thus obtained.After four tests had been made at the smelter stack, which removed the gases from all blast furnaces in use, the centre of velocity of the gases for each test was calculated and was found to be practically constant in position. THE MORWELL BROWN COAL DEPOSITSTHIS deposits of brown coal in the neighbourhood of Morwell, are of tertiary age, and are represented on several horizons, but, owing to lack of evidence, the exact age cannot be fixed definitely. It is chiefly by reference to the basalt flows of the Older Volcanic series that the brown coal beds have been classified as of Pre-Volcanic and of Post-Volcanic age. The Pre-Volcanic brown coals are less widely distributed, and the seams generally are thin, though near Thorpdale a thickness of 40 tt. has been recorded, and from 10 ft. to 12 ft. in the vicinity of Narracan. Both of these localities lie to the south-west of Yallourn, and it has not been proven as yet whether these older coals and accompanying basaltic flows pass under the Morwell beds.The brown coal deposits have accumulated in an area where extensive faulting in early tertiary times has taken place with oscillations of elevation and depression of the land surface. In the vicinity of Yallourn, Paheozoic strata (probably Silurian) are exposed on either bank of the Latrobe River about a mile above the powerhouse weir, where the river flows through steep banks rising a couple of hundred feet on either side. The Silurian strata are highly inclined, and consist mostly of slates and Illudstones. Resting unconformably on the upturned edges of the Silurian is a conglomerate bed of Mesozoic age, above which occur beds clipping to the south-east of felspathic sandstones, with alternating mudstones at times carbonaceous, and containing thin seams of black coal.The brown coal seams and associated lignitic Clays, sands, gravels, etc, rest on the Mesozoic strata (as proved in the vicinity of the power-house and by boring north of the Latrobe River, near the old open cut), but do not appear on the surface of the Mesozoic, where these beds attain an altitude of more than 50 ft. above the present level of the Latrobe River.Half a mile upstream from the power-house a layer of basalt of the Older Volcanic series, almost resting upon the Silurian strata, is...

GENERALTHE coal deposit, where it is being worked, consists of a bed of brown coal varying in thickness from 120 ft. to 200 ft., covered by an overburden of clay, drift, loam, etc., of a thickness of 22 ft. to 40 ft., and averaging 28 ft.The overburden is first entirely removed from the coal, and then the coal is excavated by. large revolving shovels which work at the bottom of the hole or open cut in the coal and deliver it in shovel bucketfuls to the transport system. The shovels owned by the Commission and available for this coal excavation are two Bucyrus steam revolving shovels, one being type 150B, weighing 150 tons, having a 21-cub. yd. bucket, and capable of digging a 47-ft. face; and the other being type 175B, weighing200 tons, having a 31-cub. yd. bucket, and capable of digging a 61-ft. face.In addition to these two steam shovels, the Commission has recently obtained a No. 250 Ruston electric revolving shovel weighing 340 tons, and having a bucket of 10 cub. yd. capacity, and capable of digging a 75-ft. face. When this electric shovel has been erected it will replace the steam shovels on the coal excavation, and the permanent transport system has been designed to take delivery of the coal from its bucket.The duty to be performed by the transport system is to take the coal from the shovels, elevate it out of the open cut, transport it to the screening house, deliver it iuto the hoppers at the top of this building, then to take the coal after it has passed over the screens and distribute the required grades to the power house and to the briquetting plant.

THE Yallourn chimney has aroused interest, as it is, for the time being, the tallest structural erection in Australia. Its height was not decided on, however, with the object of breaking records, but is purely incidental to the purpose which it serves. Theboiler plant at the briquetting works (first instalment) consists of five Babcock and Wilcox land-type water-tube boilers, each of 4510 sq ft. heating su:r£ace and 225 sq. ft. grate area in the form of step grates. Four boilers will normally produce 73,000 lb. of steam per hour at a gauge pressure of 265 lb. and a temperature of 6500 F., the fifth boiler being a reserve. Each boiler will consume about 100 tons of Yallourn coal per 24 hours. Provision is made for future installation of economizers, should it be found desirable. Designing for this condition, and allowing for a waste gas temperature of 3500 F. and an air temperature exceeding 1000 it was found necessary to have a draft of about 1.3 in. (water gauge) at the base of the chimney, and to deal with about 2000 cub. ft. of gases per second. Estimates were made of the cost of providing the necessary draught by means of fans and by means of a tall chill).ney. The annual charges of the two methods differed only slightly, and the tall chimney wasselected as being the more general practice in briquetting factories.Estimates were prepared for brick and concrete chiIlllleys. Yallourn bricks at that time were hand-made, and, while very suitable for domestic work, were not capable of withstanding high compressive stresses. The chimney design to suit these bricks thus required to be on very ample lines, resulting in high cost. GOLD has played a part in the development of Australia. The total yield exceeds SIX hundred million pounds sterling, while the glamour of gold-mining and the unfailing demand for the product have enhanced its influence. The production is still considerable, but the yield is less than one-quarter of that twenty years previously, while the number of men employed has dropped from 70,000 to 11,000. Not only has there been a marked decline in production, but it is anticipated that thisdecline will continue, and continue more markedly. It is therefore desirable to ascertain the causes of the decline and inquire into means for diminishing or preventing it.The problem under discussion is far from being only local. Finlay states: The grand feature of the history of the business has been the progress of an economic cycle unfavourable to gold milling. The USA yield fell from $101,000,000 to $44,000,000.South Afriea has for some time produced one-half of the world's gold; yet in the Mining and Scientific Press of 11th February, IH22, General Smuts is quoted as saying that if the premium disappeared entirely 24 out of 34 mines would shut down. IT has often been stated in the past that the materials known as inert fillers were merely adulterants nsed in the manufacture of paint, and that their purpose was to cheapen paints made from more expensive pigments, such as zinc oxide or white lead. In recent years, however, practical tests in various parts of the world have proved that many of the inert fillers, when used with wisdom, possess very definite and advantageous properties.Another oft-repeated statement which had a far-reaching effect in the past, and which is not without influence to-day, is that the very best paint must always be made from a pure pigment, without admixture with either a fellow pigment or an inert filler. Both or either of these statements may be true in a few isolated instances, but for the vast majority of ordinary painting conditions there is an abundance of experimental evidence to prove that neither is true.With the desire to further investigate these points and po 'determine the best combination of pigments and fillers for use as an outside white paint on plant buildings, a number of panels were prepared in the laboratory of this company.

IN the recent monograph on Broken Hill, N.S.W., by E. C. Andrews,* two independent petrological reports appear as Appendices 1 and n, by W. R. Browne and F. L. Stillwell respectively. In these considerable differences of opinion occur. Andrews contributes to some of the questions at issue, but no analytical review of the differences appears in the body of the report. Their development may invite question, and the following notes have been prepared partly in explanation and partly as a summary of some of the divergences. The soope of Browne's report extends over the whole district of Broken Hill, while Stillwell's deals with the rocks within 25 chains of the main lode. The more difficult and important rock-types occur in both areas, raising similar questions. In both cases observations extended beyond the limits of the prescribed areas. Broadly, Browne faces his problem as a study of a series of primary igneous rooks, acid and basio, whioh are intrusive into a series of sillimanite gneisses. The development of the sillimanite gneisses is regarded as belonging to an earlier period than the intrusion of the igneous rooks, while the gneissio structures of the latter are features which are incidental to their orystallization, and are not acquired subsequent to their consolidation. He finally produoes a picture in which his views of igneous injection and differentiation takes a prominent place. One direct result is the claim that three separate periods of metamorphism have oocurred in the Broken Hill area. Stillwell primarily examines the rooks as schists and gneisses since their present dominating features have been acquired during metamorphism. The effort is made to understand suoh differences as might arise from differing conditions of metamorphism upon rocks of similar and different oonstitution. The aim is to divest the rocks of those oharaoters which are due to metamorphism before approaching the questions of intrusive relatio'nships between igneous rocks andsediments.

The principal dirnensions of the chimney were fixed as follows: Height from formation to coping, 328 ft. 8 in.; inside diameter concrete shell, 13 ft. Gin.; inside diameter of the 4~-in. brick lining. 11 ft. (j in. ; shell thickness above flue inlet at a point 39 ft. above formation, 1 ft. 8in.; shell thickness at coping, 6 in. That is, the inside of chimney is cylindrical, wldst the outside is gradually stepped inwards with of 1 in. and less until the shell is 6 in. thick only at the top. With these dimensions in mind, it will be seen that some close thought was necessary to ensure a satisfactory of fonn which could be kept rigid and plumb to a height and at the same time provide safe working conditions for the labourers employed.FOUNDATIONSThe spread base of the chimney is 45 ft. in diameter, and foundations were carried down to a depth of 8 ft. 6 in. below natural surface into good hard clay which was known to be the best foundation obtainable in the vicinity being capable of withstanding, when dry, a load of 3 tons to 4 tons per square foot, whereas dead load is 1A tons per square foot and the maximum load expeeted under the most severe wind condition is 2 tons per square foot to ensure the foundation being kept dry and unaffected by ground water, the site was surrounded by a ring drain at a distance of six feet from edge of concrete foundation and at a minimum depth of one foot below bottom of concrete. Open-jointed pipes were laid in the bottom ofthe drain and graded to a pipe drain with outfall clear of the site.

The metallurgical has been discussed sufficiently for the reader to follow the course of the experiments but the actual plant has only been described in so far as it effected metallurgical treatment, since the arrangement of such a smelter is a matter of common knowledge.The lead-roasting plant consisted of Godfrey roaster, Dwight-Lloyd maehines and Huntingdon-Heberlein pots. THIS paper deals with the handling of the various materials used in the 100-ton zinc plant at Risdon, and, in view of the magnitude of the works, the configuration of the ground covered by these works, the variety of the rnaterials used, and the large quantities, a very attractive and interesting subject is opened.The works are situated on the right bank of the River Derwent, about four miles above Hobart, the capital city of Tasmania. The Risdon works cover a space of 149 acres, the area being :3800 yards long by 2800 yards wide, and the elevations vary from 6 ft. above high-water mark at the wharf and foreshore to 163 ft. above high-water mark at the power station, these being the limiting points as regards elevation which are considered in this paper. Throughout the paper elevations are given in feet above high-water mark. Fig. 1 shows a general view of the works taken from the opposite bank of the River Derwent. The wharf is clearly shown, with SS Kekerangu loading residue; behind the wharf is seen the inclined conveyor leading to the cakine bin; further up the hill is the leaching division. No. 1 haulage runs to the left of this up to a point on the left of the power station, the large reinforced concrete building at the top of the hill. Below this is the cell room, the largest building on the plant. The roasting division, not very clearly seen, lies at the foot of the main stack, and the casting division lies to the left of this, between the leaching division and the cell room. A large wharf has been construl'ted alongside the works. This wharf is 880 ft. long and 60 ft. wide. It is capable of berthing large overseas steamers, as at low tide there is a depth of :30 ft. of water. DURING a period extending over about the last two and a half years, the performances of various types of rock drills in use at the mining department of the Zinc Corporation have been recorded as closely as possible. The main objective was the collection of sufficient data regarding internal water-feed hammer drills, when used for the same class of work as the older type reciprocating drill, to enable a decision to be formed on the following points:(1) Whether internal water-feed, hammer drills could efficiently perform the work previously carried out by reciprocating drills without excessive repair cost to the former.(2) If so, was it good policy commercially to eliminate the reciprocating type completely, writing these off together with the accompanying spares, accessories, and solid drill steel, and replacing with internal water-feed hammer drills, with lighter fittings, and the requisite amount of hollow drill steel.(3) What were the best types and makes of hammer drill for different classes of mining work(4) What was the economic aspect of the introduction of the principle of internal water feed to every type of machine throughout the mine.Prior to the strike of workers in May, 1919, Ingersoll-Rand E47 31-in. reciprocating drills had been used for stoping and for the major portion of driving, cross-cutting, and similar work. The accompanying columns and fittings were all 4t in. The drill steel used was solid octagon. Up to 1916 these machines were also used for winzing, after which time jackhamers were more successfully employed. These latter were of the usual types, varying in weight from 40 to' 46 Ib. Ingersoll BCR 430, Holman No. 2 spool valve, Sullivan DP33,. Waugh Clipper 55. These machines were all dry head; the drill steel was hollow hexagon, shanked.

ONE of the phases of mining wide ore-bodies, such as are found in Broken Hill, is the laying-out and design of the sill floor gangway timber, When, in the above operation, a detail has to be repeated frequently, it is desirable in the interests of efficiency that that detail should be standardized as far as possible. Before arriving at a standard design e.g., a crosscut layout-it would seem necessary to compare its strength with some other unit of timber and see that the general design is at least as strong as the unit that has been taken for comparative purposes, In these notes no attempt is made to calculate the stresses to which timber underground is subjected, but merely to draw a comparison between the relative strengths of the various cross sections of timber in common use underground.It has been assumed for the purposes of comparison that the milling exerts pressure in a vertical plane only, and is uniformly distributed over any area. THERE are few industrial and metallurgieal processes which do not require the application of heat energy, and the modern demand for increased working efficiency has resulted in attention being paid to temperature control as a means of ensuring fuel economy and more efficient plant operation. In general, mill accuracy required is not very contant in laboratory work, and few industrial operations are controlled to within less than 5° while in many cases greater limits are allowable. Almost every thermal property of matter has been suggested as a basis for the construction of pyrometers, but the thermo-electric type finds by far the widest application, and hence this paper will deal only with the principles, construction, and uses of this type of instrument. THERMOELECTRIC PYROMETRY.In the year 1821 Seebeek discovered that if the ends of two dissimilar metal wires were joined and one junction heated, a current flowed in the circuit, and the KMF (electro-motion force) set up could be measured by inserting a galvanometer at the cold junction. The phenomenon was not thoroughly investigated for many years, but, as the demand for high-temperature thermometers increased, several investigators, of whom Le Chatelier was one of the pioneers, successfully endeavoured to utilize the principle in pnometric construction. The couples which gave the most satisfactory results were discovered, improvements were made in material and design and the present-day type of instrument gradually evolved. The apparatus consists of three main parts, viz. (1) The thermo-couple itself of two dissimilar metal or alloy wires together at one end. (2) The leads which connect the terminal of the thermo-couple with the measuring instrument.

IN the ordinary course of treatment of pyritic ores or concentrates, whether for the recovery of copper, tin, gold, or any other contents, the removal of some or all of the sulphur contents is almost invariably the first step. The practice is to roast the ore in a current of air so that the sulphur is oxidized to sulphur dioxide and the metal constituents are changed from sulphides to oxides. If it is feasible to produce sulphuric acid in conjunction with the treatment process, the sulphur can be usefully employed; but if this is not possible, then the sulphur contents not only become a dead loss, but tend to be a nuisance as well in the surrounding neighbourhood.The problem of avoiding this disadvantage and making economic use of the sulphur has had attention from the early days of scientific metallurgy, and in the past few years very special efforts have been made both to drive part of the sulphur as such from pyrites and recover it, and to replace the sulphur in the S02 by carbon, with the production of carbon dioxide and precipitation of the sulphur. So far economic success does not appear to have crowned these efforts. In the case of pyrites, of the two atoms of sulphur which go to make the FeS2, the first is very lightly held. Dissociation is effected by heat alone at a temperature which is given by Peters as 5160 C.Now, sulphur and hydrogen will unite or burn together, with the production of sulphuretted hydrogen. It occurred to the writer that, if hydrogen was passed over pyrites heated to the above temperature, this first atom would be snatched away by the hydrogen, and could possibly be economically recovered.The first step consisted of some simple laboratory experiments. From these it was found that this first atom was readily removed, and that the extraction was practically complete. Further, the reaction took place at a low temperature, a dull red heat being sufficient.

A BRIEF account of the water-power potentialities of Tasmania is given, together with possible applications of the power commercially. A short history of the Waddamana development is then given, and the main works are described.WATER POWER POTENTIALITIESTasmania is an island of approximately 24,500 sq. miles area (exclusive of small islands). An area of 12,000 sq. miles is at an elevation of over 1000 ft. above sea-level, and of 2300 sq. miles at over 3000 ft. above sea-level. Average annual rainfall varies from' over 140 in. on West Coast to 20 in. on East Coast, and for the whole island averages 48.5 in. The total water-power available, based on conservative figures for run off and efficiency, is 6,000,000 b.h.p. Only a small percentage of this total will, under present conditions, and under likely conditions in the immediate future, be capable of being developed commercially.An extensive hydro-metric and water-power survey is at present being carried out in order to collect information concerning the most promising water-power schemes. Already 400,000 b.h.p. has been located in different proposals, and there is still a large area of very likely country along the West Coast which has not been investigated yet. Tasmania thus has very vast power potentialities, which, combined with good ports and communications and wonderful mineral and timber resources, should augur well for the establishment of the great key industries, particularly chemical and metallurgical.

FOR some time past keen interest has been shown in both America and South Africa in the mining drill-steel problem. This interest has extended to Australian mining fields, and Australian drill users, ever desirous of increasing efficiency, are vigorously attacking the problem. The writer has recently been engaged in the investigation of the problem on two of ,the biggest mining fields in Australia, and has formed very definite conclusions concerning the causes of many drill-steel casualties. He puts these views forward in the hope that they may be of interest to, both drill manufacturers and drill users. The subject is here dealt with mainly from the aspect of the properties of the steel and the modifications of these properties whensubjected to various manipulations. It is generally admitted that the drilling machine has greatly increased in power and efficiency during recent years, and the consequence is that the machine is demanding better service from the steel. This is being impressed on the drill users by an increase in steel casualties. This fact has led many mining people to the view that the machine has developed so rapidly that the steel maker has not been able to keep pace, and that consequently the steel isfailing by fatigue 0:1; so-called crystallization. This view is rather depressing. The writer, on the other hand, is inclined to discountenance fatigue as a serious factor under good normal working conditions where the steel is carefully manufactured and supplied to the user under suitable structural and sound conditions, and has subsequently received kind treatment at the hands of the drill sharpener and the drill user.It is not reasonable to attribute failures to fatigue until it has definitely been proved that the steel is fundamentally sound and is in the best structural condition to resist the stresses it is called upon to withstand, and, this being so, that all fundamental principles of...

THE following really forms the second part of, or a sequel to, a paper, " Ventilating Metalliferous Mines: a Method of Attack," read before the Broken Hill Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in May, 1920. In that paper the writer advocated a consideration of the question of ventilation in metal mines from a different aspect to that 'which had hitherto prevailed locally. Various factors regarded as having an important bearing on the subject were set forth, together with the results of observations made during ventilation tests carried out at the mining department of the Zinc Corporation.During the subsequent discussion the question was raised of the possibility of any practical application of the method of attack described, and also whether the theoretical considerations mentioned were likely to be of any real utility to the mining engineer engaged in ventilation work in a metalliferous mine.
