CHROME ore, which is used in Canada in the production of ferro-alloys, in a variety of refractories, and indirectly in many chemical industries, is both commercially important and scientifically interesting. The sight of chromium metal is familiar to all of us in the home, the office, the automobile. Chromium is synonymous with armaments: it is understood to be one of several essential metals in tanks, which played an important role in the defeat of France in the spring of 1940. Chromium, in other forms, comes into our daily lives by way of paint and leather, of the familiar green ginger-ale and beer bottles, and more indirectly in every pound of steel produced in the .Dominion. Necessary to our civilization in peace and war, the ores of chromium occur in many corners of the earth. This paper attempts to describe the chemical constitution of chrome ores, their world distribution, and the various chrome products and their industrial applications in Canada.

"Placer Dome - Campbell Mine is a gold mine located at Balmertown in the Red Lake District of North Western Ontario. During the last 50 years, the mine has produced over ten million ounces of gold.A change in ball mill grinding media was made in August 1998 from 1.5” diameter forged balls to 1.5” diameter, 18% chrome balls. This was done to reduce grinding media consumption and to potentially help flotation performance.A marked ball test done in September-October 1999 showed that, of the alloys tested, 18% chrome was the optimum for the ore at Campbell Mine. The test showed that consumption of chrome balls should be 3 times less than forged balls.In December 1999, the ball size was increased from 1.5” to 2” in an effort to reduce the amount of oversize rock discharging from the ball mill. This change in size was successful.Grinding media consumption for the ball mill decreased 73% from 1.20 kg/tonne before the use of chrome balls to 0.327 kg/tonne after the use of chrome balls. This clearly indicates that, for the ore at Campbell Mine, there is significant savings in grinding media by using chrome.Grinding ball costs were reduced by 59% from $O.88/tonne of ore milled to $0.36/tonne of ore milled representing a saving of $298,000 per year. This also clearly indicates that using chrome balls is a benefit at Campbell Mine.Test work to show that chrome grinding media is beneficial to flotation has been inconclusive so far but is still ongoing.No tests have been done to see if there would be a benefit with an even higher chrome percentage in the grinding media. Test work in this area is also planned for the future"

THE Eastern Townships of Quebec have been the chief Canadian source of chromite. Production, however, has never been large and, except for a period of steady but small output between 1894 and 1909, mining has been active only in war time. The known deposits are too small or too low grade to compete with overseas sources in normal times. During the last war, shipping difficulties and a greatly increased demand in the United States resulted in high prices and a ready market for low-.grade material. The Quebec chromite industry flourished and played an important part in relieving the wartime shortage. Shipments in 1918 .amounted to 15,600 tons of crude ore and 6,400 tons of concentrates. At the outbreak of the present war it was natural to turn again to the Quebec field as a possible source of this strategic mineral. Some of the old properties have since been opened by private and government money and some new deposits have been found. Total mill capacity is 750 tons per day, as compared with 200 to 300 tons in 1918. During 1940, 1941, and 1942, about 85 chromite deposits were examined by the Geological Survey in a belt 100 miles long and up to 7 miles wide. A part of this belt, about 35 miles long, in which the geological features ?were not well known, was mapped on a scale of 1/2; mile to an inch.? Small ..areas around some of the deposits were mapped in detail, on scales of 20 to 200 feet to an inch. Some geophysical work was done but did not result in the discovery of ore. Prospecting by stripping and trenching was then undertaken and chromite ore was uncovered at several localities. The above work was done by the writer and by J. W. Ambrose, who has kindly contributed his results for incorporation in this paper. Y. O. Fortier actd as assistant in the geological work and, in 1942, was in charge of a sub-party engaged in geological mapping. The author is indebted to H. C. Cooke and J. W. "Canada's largest known chromite deposit occurs in a layered intrusion in the Bird River area of Manitoba. However, numerically most of the chromite occurrences are in the Appalachians. Few, apparently minor, occurrences are also known in the Cordillera.In the Appalachians, chromite occurs as lenses and pods in dunite; they are of ""podiform"" type. The individual concentrations vary in size from a few pounds to tens of thousands of tons. Locally, chromite concentrations form discontinuous zones extending several hundred feet along strike and presumably down dip, therefore resembling boudinaged layers. Chromite layering and lineation are commonly concordant to those of the host rocks.The Appalachian chromite occurrences are thought to have been formed by fractional crystallization and perhaps also by liquid immiscibility. Their present shape and distribution are largely the result of deformation mostly prior to complete solidification of their host rocks. Therefore, the attitude of layering, foliation, lineation and other features related to deformation provide valuable guides in predicting the probable distribution of chromite, and hence are helpful in exploration.Chromites fulfilling the requirements for metallurgical, refractory and chemical grades occur in the Appalachians. Although the Appalachian deposits are similar in size and grade to some of the chromite deposits being mined elsewhere, they are unlikely to be economic, at present, in the higher wage Canadian environment. However, in case of shortages in chromite ore supply which may result, among other reasons, from increasing tendency to further processing in the producing countries, the Appalachian occurrences may become sources of ore. Such eventual shortages combined with relative abundance of electricity in Canada and recent innovations in oxide ore reduction technology may hasten the time when ferrochrome manufacture based on local chromite sources becomes economically viable."

High-pressure acid leaching (HPAL) of nickel laterite ores typically extracts 95% of the nickel and 91% of the cobalt. Impurity elements in the feed, such as iron, aluminium and chromium, also dissolve and can be detrimental to downstream processes. Rejection of impurities within the autoclave is highly desirable. Aluminium and iron hydrolyze, and then precipitate in the autoclave leaving only small amounts that are subsequently removed by precipitation in a neutralization step. The concentration of dissolved chromium can range from 200 to 2000 ppm, depending on the feed composition. Chromium in the liquid phase, usually in the hexavalent state, introduces many problems and can limit refining options. For example, chromium poisons the organics in solvent extraction making SX an expensive option. Also, hexavalent chromium must be converted to the trivalent state before it can be precipitated along with iron and aluminium. Bench-scale work confirmed that mixing small amounts of carbon-base additives, such as coke, with the autoclave feed significantly reduced chromium concentration in the autoclave discharge without any detrimental effects on paymetals recoveries and selectivity.

"The basic refractories used in non-ferrous industry contain chrome ore for improving the thermal shock resistance, thus reducing the penetration of molten metal and fayalite-type slags into the lining. The current study aims to replace chrome ore with Me4+ ions along with Fe3+ ions in order to form MgO-Al2O3- FeOx-Me4+O2 based complex spinel systems that could perform similar to the complex chromia-bearing spinel in the magnesia-chrome refractories. This system allows for lower temperatures of synthesis and sintering. In our study, compositions with 60% MgO were fired below 1500°C and resulted in complete formation of complex spinel, and open porosity less than 5%. The in-situ formation of the complex spinel from the fine mix of oxides in the MgO-Al2O3-FeOx-Me4+O2 system offers a suitable alternative of binding system to produce basic refractories at lower temperatures and of similar physical and mechanical properties with magnesia-chrome bricks fired above 1750ºC. INTRODUCTIONThe synthesis of magnesium aluminate spinel (MgAl2O4) (Maschio, Fabbri, & Fiori, 1988) or magnesium chromate spinel (MgCr2O4) from their respective oxides is diffusion controlled resulting in a sluggish reaction even at high temperatures. For instance, the diffusion of Mg2+ and Al3+ ions in the intermediate spinel layer during reaction is slower than the diffusion of Mg2+ in corundum and Al3+ in periclase. The interfacial layer of spinel formed during the reaction increases the diffusion path for the spinel forming cations. This accompanied by ~8% volume expansion retards further reaction resulting in incomplete spinel forming reaction during sintering and hence densification during the reaction cannot be achieved. In order to assess sintering studies with fine particulate oxides that would result in a lower diffusion path, a mechanical mixture of the hydroxides of aluminium and magnesium calcined at 1400ºC to 1600ºC for 1 hour does not result in complete spinel formation (Sarkar, Das, & Banerjee, 2003), which indicates that reaction sintering of stoichiometric magnesium aluminate spinel is retarded by initial reaction forming the interfacial spinel layer. The basic bricks used as linings in non-ferrous pyro-metallurgical convertors are manufactured using magnesia and chrome ore, the sintering of which produce spinel solid solution. This solid solution is a mix of both normal and inverse spinel structures that sinters at temperatures in excess of 1800ºC in air."

ABSTRACT Exploration by geophysical methods and diamond drilling of an occurrence of chrysotile asbestos, located ten miles east of Matheson, Ontario, was commenced on March 25th, 1949, by the Canadian Johns-Manville Company, Limited. The asbestos is associated with a narrow sill-like body of basic and ultrabasic rocks which strikes northwesterly across portions of Munro and Beatty townships. To date, asbestos zones of commercial interest, many hundreds of feet in length, width, and depth, have been outlined by diamond drilling along a 2-mile length of serpentine. The fractures occupied by the asbestos veins are closely associated with the regional faulting in the area. The mining of the first occurrence, or A orebody, will be by open-pit methods. Milling will commence at a rate of 50 tons an hour. INTRODUCTION OCCURRENCES of chrysotile asbestos in Munro township have been known at least since 1914 and references to them appear in reports published by the Ontario Department of Mines in 1915 (1) and 1919 (2). J. G. Ross (3) in his excellent publication on Chrysotile Asbestos in Canada, mentions an occurrence in Munro township. The area was first mapped in detail by J. Satterly, of the Ontario Department of Mines, in 1944, and brief mention is made of chrysotile asbestos in Satterly's preliminary report (4), which was published the following year.

Due to its unique properties, chrysotile asbestos is used in many diversified applications. In recent years, a better understanding of the structure and properties of chrysotile has evolved due to the research efforts of many investigators. A summary of the results of some of these investigations is given. An attempt is made to show the relationships between the properties of chrysotile and its crystal structure. Examples taken from the literature are cited in which methods have been developed for modifying the properties to improve the performance of asbestos in some applications. These include the effect of pH on the positive zeta potential and the addition of sodium silicate to improve filtration characteristics. The dehydroxylation and formation of forsterite when chrysotile is heated are also discussed.

The origins of the electrorefining process date back to 1869, when the first ER cathodes were produced at Pembrey, South Wales. By the time that Pembrey was closing, Chuquicamata tank house was under construction, initiating in 1915 a long history of electrolytic cathodes production. Initially electrowon cathodes and later electrorefined cathodes were produced. During the history of Chuquicamata tank house, there have been several challenges associated with the quality demanded for electrolytic copper. Among them, the transformation from electrowinning to electrorefining in 1952, the onset of the direct commercialization of ER cathodes and the phase out of wire bars in the 80s, several technological changes including the implementation of permanent cathodes, and certainly the constant increase in complexity of the anodes refined. This paper explores the manner in which Chuquicamata has addressed these challenges and examines its links to process characteristics, which have been necessary to maintain a product quality according to market requirements and a brand, “CCC”, that is widely recognized worldwide. INTRODUCTION Located in the north of Chile, in the Atacama Desert, Chuquicamata is an open pit copper mine that for many years has played a relevant role in the global and local mining industry. Known from prehispanic times, the Chuquicamata deposit was initially developed between 1912 and 1915 by the Chile Exploration Company, the operating company of the Chile Copper Company controlled by the Guggenheim Brothers in the USA (Yeatman, 1916). Officially inaugurated on May 18th, 1915, by the President of Chile who pressed a button in Santiago sending a telegraph signal to the power generation plant specially built in Tocopilla, 1500 km north. It signaled the beginning of generating energy, sending it to Chuquicamata, another 140 km east (“El mineral de Chuquicamata”, 1915), marking the beginning of its industrial operation.

Cameco Corporation, on behalf of a joint venture, is preparing surface and underground facilities at their northern Saskatchewan property in preparation for the future operation of a high-grade uranium mine. The Cigar Lake orebody is situated about 430 metres below surface at the unconformity between metamorphic basement rocks and flat lying sandstone. Major technical factors influencing the mining method selection include ground stability, control of ground water, radiation exposure and ore handling and storage. A decade-long test mine program resulted in the selection and validation of ?jet boring? a non-entry mining method. Cigar Lake?s jet boring mining method involves several major steps; artificial ground freezing of the orebody and surrounding rock, TBM (tunnel boring) type development of access crosscuts below the orebody, installation of cased pilot holes upwards through the ore, and ore extraction using a rotating high pressure water jet within the pilot holes. The resulting cavities are surveyed and backfilled with concrete. The ore slurry will be processed underground and pumped to surface. This paper discusses the jet boring mining method in general terms and includes highlights of the Cigar Lake test mine program completed in 2000.

In the spring of 2010 double refractory ores from historical stockpiles were processed through Barrick's Goldstrike pressure oxidation facility, thereby providing preg robbing feeds for a variety of metallurgical testwork. This paper describes the effects of amount, type, place and time of addition of activated carbons on CIL gold recovery and shows that native carbon in plant PDX'ed discharge solids can still preg rob gold loaded activated carbon.

London Mining Plc. is developing an iron ore project in Sierra Leone. The Marampa mine is a brownfield development effort, having been operated by others since the 1930?s until low iron ore prices forced closure. Peak production of the prior operations was approximately 2.5 Mt/a in the 1960?s. Following civil war In Sierra Leone, London Mining obtained the mining license in 2006 and commenced activity to redevelop the Marampa mining and processing operations. There are two ore deposits of interest for development as well as a resource comprised of tailings from previous operations. Phase 1 will be the mining of the tailings resource with a 1.8 Mt/a plant producing 66 per cent Fe sinter feed, expandable to 3.6 Mtpa. The first phase is currently under construction with start-up expected in the third quarter of 2011. Phase 2 will include development of the two ore deposits. These deposits are weathered secondary ore and the main primary ore resource. Phase 2 is currently under prefeasibility study and targets a final 16 Mt/a concentrate production in 2016. Outotec partnered with London Mining on testing efforts to develop the magnetic separation flowsheet using SLon VPHGMS machines to process the Marampa material. This paper explains the flowsheet development process for the weathered and primary ores commencing with sample characterization and detailed parametric investigations to evaluate SLon performance. The final flowsheet configuration is explained, including expected circuit recoveries and concentrate quality, clearly demonstrating the performance of the SLon VPHGMS circuit in iron ore tailings treatment applications.

Nickel is used in a wide variety of applications from consumer goods to industrial uses. In many of these uses, nickel contributes to the environmental attributes of the product. The challenge, however, is measuring that contribution, comparing it to the environmental cost of production, and communicating the role of nickel to the customer in a way that is easy to understand. This paper presents the Nickel Institute?s approach to climate change as a global commodity industry association, and discusses where we stand with regard to some of these key questions. It also identifies issues for the nickel industry moving forward ? challenges that are likely to be common to other commodities.

Within the mining industry, the pathway from exploration, to planning, construction, operation and closure has become more complex over the last few decades. The current financial, environmental and social influences present the mining industry with unprecedented challenges and opportunities. In addition, international environmental and social reporting standards and codes are becoming increasingly robust. The reporting requirements provide an added impetus for issuers to effectively manage environmental and social impacts and risks. Reporting requirements also provide the opportunity to be transparent. The intended audience for these Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Guidelines for Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve Estimation includes practitioners, industry participants at all levels of skill and experience, corporate management and board members, government agencies, academic institutions and interested parties. For practitioners, this document provides underlying key principles of environmental, social and governance practices. The ESG Guidelines provide guidance for those using environmental, social, governmental and governance information when preparing and implementing mineral exploration programs and contributing to the preparation of mineral resource and mineral reserve estimates for mineral properties that are either at the study stage (i.e., scoping / preliminary economic assessment, pre-feasibility, or feasibility studies) or in operation. The guidelines can also be used to help mineral resource and mining companies apply good practice to manage their environmental and social risks and opportunities. Companies can identify and retain appropriate professionals to prepare environmental and social materials to support company studies. The guidelines are also a resource for companies developing effective environmental and social management strategies at any project stage. This document is not intended to be prescriptive and is not intended to provide exhaustive guidance on what to consider in terms of environmental, social, legal and governmental modifying factors in the preparation of MRMR estimates. Rather, it is intended as general guidance to assist companies and practitioners in considering and applying these modifying factors for MRMR estimates. This document is also not intended to guide environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA); however, the measures needed to manage impacts help inform the constraints and costs for defining mineral resources and mineral reserves and inform the costs and schedules of mineral project studies. All documentation of MRMR estimates made by an issuer and intended to be, or reasonably likely to be, made available to the public in a jurisdiction of Canada must comply with the requirements of National Instrument 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects (NI 43-101), as amended from time to time (Canadian Securities Administrators, 2016a and 2016b). Disclosure is not addressed in these ESG Guidelines. Determination of what to include in disclosures is defined in the applicable Securities’ legal frameworks. Appendix A presents a summary table showing the linkage of the principles and topics in these ESG Guidelines to the potential effects on project costs, schedules, government permits and approvals, social licence to operate and financing.

The CIM Estimation of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Best Practice Guidelines (MRMR Best Practice Guidelines) were prepared by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum's (CIM) Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Committee (CIM MRMR Committee) to update an earlier version that was accepted by CIM Council on November 23, 2003 (CIM, 2003). These 2019 MRMR Best Practice Guidelines supersede and replace the November 23, 2003 version of the MRMR Guidelines. These 2019 MRMR Guidelines are not intended to be prescriptive and are not intended to provide detailed and exhaustive instructions for preparation of Mineral Resource and/or Mineral Reserve (MRMR) estimates. Rather, they are intended as general guidance to assist professional geoscientists (or equivalent) and engineers (or equivalent) in preparing high quality estimates of MRMR that incorporate sound geoscientific, engineering, evaluation and design practices. They are based on well-established estimation and mine planning principles and are designed to provide general guidelines of best professional practices employed in the preparation of MRMR estimates. Although the 2019 MRMR Best Practice Guidelines are intended for use by Canadian-based mining/exploration practitioners, many of the concepts and practices presented herein are in general agreement with current industry practices in jurisdictions with membership in the Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO). For this document, persons preparing MRMR estimates are called Practitioners. Preparation of MRMR estimates should be carried out by Practitioners who either hold the status of Professional Geoscientist (or equivalent) or Professional Engineer (or equivalent), or who prepare the estimates under the supervision of a Professional Geoscientist (or equivalent) or Professional Engineer (or equivalent). For the purposes of this document, all references to reporting describe such necessary reports and related documentation that are created as part of the normal-course work flow of preparing MRMR estimates for internal purposes. For clarity, all public disclosure of MRMR estimates made by, or on behalf of, an issuer and intended to be, or reasonably likely to be, made available to the public in a jurisdiction of Canada must comply with the requirements of National Instrument 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects (NI 43-101), as amended from time to time. At least one Qualified Person (QP) must take responsibility for each part of the estimation process when publicly disclosing the results of MRMR estimates. The intended audience for these 2019 MRMR Best Practice Guidelines includes Practitioners at all levels of skill and experience, government agencies, academic institutions, and the public.

"Adopted in 2003, theses guidelines are intended to assist the Qualified Person(s) in the planning, supervision, preparation and reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserve estimates. The report is divided into two broad sections “General Guidelines” appropriate for most metals and “Guidelines Specific to Particular Commodities” for potash, industrial minerals, uranium and coal. “These guidelines are reference in the Companion Policy of NI 43-101 with a statement that a qualified person classifying a mineral deposit as a mineral resource or mineral reserve should follow them.”Executive SummaryThe following is a summary, in table format, of the main elements of the Estimation Best Practice Committee's report ""Estimation of Mineral Resource and Mineral Reserve Best Practice Guidelines"". While the summary table is provided for convenience, the Committee recommends that the report be read in its entirety and the table summary not be used as a stand alone document. These guidelines are not intended to be either prescriptive or exhaustive. They do not preclude innovation. Thirdly, the value of diamonds varies from deposit to deposit and varies with stone size within a given deposit. These aspects must be considered when sampling, evaluating the resource and establishing the reserve of a depositThe product from metallic mineral mines is generally quite liquid in terms of number of potential buyers, and the commodity prices and price structure are published daily. In contrast, most diamonds are valued in the overall market context only 10 times a year in ""sights"" and the marketing of diamonds is dominated by a small number of organizations. Diamond valuation is more akin to industrial minerals valuation in that process recovery is important at the ""assay stage"", the impact on price of new goods arriving on the market must be evaluated, and product quality must be acceptable to potential buyers."
