Building off the enthusiasm generated by Credit Suisse First Boston on the potential benefits of an industry-wide effort to market gold jewellery, a group of gold producers, led by Randall Oliphant, CEO of Barrick Gold, decides to investigate the long -term impact of launching a significant marketing initiative to stimulate demand for gold jewellery. The group establishes an international Steering Committee representing producers of differing sizes, members and non-members of the World Gold Council. This Committee comprises representatives from AngloGold, Barrick, Gympie Gold, Kinross, Randgold, and Sons of Gwalia and is supported by the Australian Gold Council, the Gold and Silver Institute, and CSFB. The Steering Committee hires McKinsey to assist it by conducting an independent review of whether investment in a large-scale marketing initiative for gold jewellery would be effective in increasing demand for gold, and ultimately of significant economic benefit of the gold industry. Based on McKinsey?s review* and its own discussions with key stakeholders across the industry, the Steering Committee strongly believes the case for marketing is compelling and sufficiently proven to persuade the industry to undertake a major initiative over the next few years. "Pamour Porcupine Mines of Timmins, Ontario operates two 3,000 ton per day concentrators which receive ore from eight to ten mines in the area. The area milling concept was adopted by Pamour in 1971 and has been used successfully since then. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the advantages and the problems of area milling. Pamour Porcupine Mines Limited operates two 3,000 ton per day concentrators which receive ore from eight to ten mines in the Porcupine region. The area milling concept was adopted as the route to survival for Pamour and has worked successfully. HISTORICAL BACKGROUNDProduction of gold from the Porcupine region in Northern Ontario started in the early 1900's and has been continuous since that time. Some of the major operators were companies such as Mcintyre, Hollinger, Dome, Pamour, Paymaster and the list goes on. An underground survey would reveal hundreds of miles of drifts and raises. The main group of mines extends from South East of Timmins to the Pamour Mine, 15 miles to the east. During the lean years of the sixties when gold prices were low, labour costs were rising rapidly, and ore grades were dropping, many of the area mines closed down their operations."

"Falconbridge Copper's Lac Shortt gold mine is located in northern Quebec approximately 300 km northeast of Val D'Or and 100 km west of Chibougamau (Pig. 1). Engineering for the mill commenced in early 1983 with a feasibility study. The plant was commissioned in the fall of 1984 at a capital cost of approximately $12 million. Design capacity was 750 tpd which was increased in the fall of 1985 to the current level of 1200 tpd.The ore at Lac Shortt is free milling, grading an average of 5.5 g/t gold which is finely disseminated throughout the host rock. Pyrite at 3 to 5% by volume and traces of copper mineralization are also present.Some of the latest gold processing techniques known at the time of design were incorporated into the mill. These include carbon-in-pulp, pressure stripping, electrowinning of pregnant solution and induction furnace refining. The plant also features several innovations such as a unique interstage carbon retention screen in the CIP circuit and the outdoor location of the cyanidation feed thickener, mill solution tank and reagent storage silos despite -40° Celsius winter temperatures.This paper describes the current mill process and discusses some of the problems encountered during the first two years of the plant's operation. CRUSHINGThe Lac Shortt surface crushing facilities are located in a separate building, isolated from the wet processing circuits for dust and noise control reasons. The crushing plant equipment was originally utilized at the Manibridge operation in northern Manitoba where it had been designed to operate at 135 tph. However, at Lac Shortt a rate of only 80 tph has been achievable to date, mainly due to the hardness and frequently slabby breakage characteristics of the ore. Therefore, in order to meet fine ore requirements at the current mill throughput of 1200 tpd, the crushing circuit is run seven days a week. 24 hours a day. Availability has been averaging 65%."

The purpose of this paper is to present, briefly, an outline of Canadian practice in the milling of gold-bearing ores- not, however, including those auriferous ores which are mined and milled primarily for their content of some other metal. It is not the writer's intention to offer technical data, nor to discuss any particular phase of the metallurgy, but rather to give a general résumé of past and present methods. As it is only within recent years that gold milling has assumed prominence in Canada, much of the technology is modern, and detailed articles describing the practice adopted in the several mining districts, and recording the various changes and innovations that have been made from time to time, are to be found in the Transactions of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and in the mining journals. Prior to the year 1860, any gold that had been produced in Canada had come from placer operations in British Columbia, but ' during that year lode gold was discovered in Nova Scotia, in quartz veins, and in several localities mines were opened and small mills of very simple character were erected to treat the ore. These plants, equipped with stamps, or arrastre, were only effective in recovering the free gold. Concentration and chlorination were introduced in an endeavour to save the gold occurring in intimate association with metallic minerals, but, due to various circumstances, gold mining and milling did not progress in Nova Scotia.

THE present era of exploitation of the Little Long Lac and Sturgeon River areas commenced in 1925, when Beardmore Gold Mines started development of what is now the property of Northern Empire Mines. A shaft was sunk in 1927-28 and a very limited amount of underground work was carried out, following which the property was shut down. It remained idle until 1932, when Empire Star Mines, a Delaware Company, optioned the property. This Company formed the Northern Empire Mines Company, Limited, to operate the mine, and immediately instigated an aggressive programme of surface and underground development. By the summer of 1933, sufficient ore was indicated to justify the installation of a small mill. The decision was also reached to bring in electric power. A power-line was built from Hydro, the Ontario Power Commission's development on the Nipigon river, to the mine, a distance of approximately 50 miles. This work was entirely financed by Northern Empire Mines. Mill construction was commenced in October, 1933, and completed by March, 1934, thus making this mine the first producer in this district.

"Exploration work in the Beardmore - Tashota area has led to a reinterpretation of relationships between gold mineralization and the geologicalevolution ofthe area. The host volcanic rocks form two parallel volcanic belts connected by a much smaller cross-cutting band, which trends northeast from Beardmore to Tashota. This connecting band consists of mafic and felsic volcanic, plus clastic sedimentary rocks in a sequence conformable with the contact of the Onaman Lake Batholith to the east. A metamorphic aureole or incorporated xenoliths are lacking along this major contact and the only intrusive relationship observed is chilling between mafic dikes and a cold host granite in proximity to it. Granite dikes are totally lacking in the volcanic succession, or the overlying sedimentary sequence. A major part of this sequence consists of a polymict basal conglomerate with granite boulders and volcanic clasts in a fine-grained chloritic matrix. The nearest source for these boulders is the Onaman Lake batholith.Gold mineralization in significant economic quantities (+ 50 000 ounces) occurs at the top or above the mafic volcanic succession as quartz bands. In the Northern Empire Mine, the band is conformable, folded, boudinaged and the mineral zoning shows a relationship to variations in the host rock, not structural overprinting. In general, where the host mafic tuff is medium-grained, the quartz band is thicker, up to a metre wide, and carries economic grade; where the tuff is finer-grained and bedded, the band is very thin and low grade.Stratigraphic control and metal zoning shows that the mineralization formed as part of the development of the volcano- sedimentary succession. The other major deposits in the area (Leitch and Sturgeon River) have a similar structural history suggesting that they are also syngenetic in terms of the stratigraphic development. Regionally, these deposits were emplaced prior to any significant tectonic deformation but at the end of the mafic volcanic event.The mafic activity was related 10 a period ofextension which caused the volcanic troughs to develop along centres of rifting. The hiatus at the end of this event permitted extensive hydrothermal systems to form and deposit siliceous exhalite bands within sedimentary or terminal mafic volcanic environments in promixity to major thermal sources. Subsequently, the Kenoran Orogeny deformed the entire succession into upright folds with a sub-vertical schistosity. Evidence shows that the deposits have remained intact since deposition."

"The Cheminis gold mineralization zone is approximately 6.5 km west of the Kerr Addison Mine along the Larder Lake Shear Zone, in the southern part of the Abitibi Greenstone Belt. The zone is very similar in appearance to the flow ore at the Kerr Addison Mine and occurs at the same stratigraphic position. Drilling has demonstrated that the gold mineralization at Cheminis persists to a depth of over 3000 ft .The mineralization is hosted by a pyritic, tuffaceous sediment which occurs within a sequence of volcanics and sediments which have been pervasively carbonatized. The gold is largely enclosed within pyrite grains and the amount of gold in the layers of pyrite increases in the layers closest to a graphitic f ault zone.It is suggested that the gold mineralization may be primarily related to the syngenetic sulphide concentrations formed during fumarolic activity on the seafloor along the Larder Lake Shear Zone. At a later stage a hydrothermal event associated with alkalic volcanism may have resulted in regional carbonatization and further concentration of the gold in the vicinity of fault zones."

The Agassiz Metallotect and the Johnson Shear Zone represent two metallogenetic fea tures located within the northern and outhern belts, respectively. of the Aphebian-aged Lynn Lake greenstone belt in northern Manitoba . Numerous gold occu rrences are associated with these two regional features . The tratabound Agas iz Au-Ag deposit with 2.9 million tonnes of 5.2 g/tonne Au and 11.8 g/tonne Ag. occurs within the Agassiz Metallotect. The stratigraphic sequence characterizing the Agassiz Metallotect comprises interlayered ox ide. silicate and sulphide facies iron formations, biotite-rich and siliceous siltstones. and a high Mg- i-Cr basaltic rock that ha previou ly been identified as tholei itic picrite. These rocks can be traced in outcrop and by their INPUT and gradiometric signature for 65 km. The Johnson Shear Zone is an ill-defined 35 km long zone of strucwral disruption that crosscuts volcanic. sedimentary and intrusive rocks and contains numerous vein-type gold occurrences. Both of these metallotects are characterized by their low level of exploration activity and as a result offer excellent residual exploration potential. Rock, basal till and vegetation geochemical techniques applied in the vicinity of the Agassiz deposit indicate the presence of trace element dispersion halos associated with the mineralization. The halos define an exploration target larger than the mineralized zone. Gold occurrences within the two metallotects are described with emphasis on the Agassiz Au-Ag deposit . A wide range of gold occurrence-types is documented including syngencticstratabound , epigenetic-replacement and epigenetic-quartz vein .

"Gold-bearing mineralization at Anomaly A occurs in polydeformed Ordovician turbidites of the Kendall Mountain Formation of the St. Croix belt in southwestern New Brunswick, and is hosted by WSWtrending, shallow-dipping, brittle-ductile high-strain zones associated with the latest stage of the second of four regional deformation events. Gold-bearing syn-deformational stockwork, massive, and multiply brecciated quartz-sulfide veined zones form irregular pods and sheets up to several meters thick, which contain arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, stibnite, and a variety of rare minerals that are gold-bearing. Mineralized zones are enveloped by locally auriferous, weakly to intensely altered wall rock. Vein paragenesis includes: (1) early (pre- to syn-D2) quartz-chlorite veins that are largely the product of migration of quartz by pressure solution; (2) crosscutting, multiphase, vuggy quartz-sulfide veins that contain most of the gold and are interpreted to be structurally controlled; (3) late, crosscutting, nondeformed, non-gold-bearing veins containing laumontite, chlorite, muscovite, quartz, fluorite, and base metal sulfides. Carbonate-poor alteration associated with zones of gold mineralization is lithology-specific, and appears to reflect overprinting of multiple events. Major elements removed during alteration include Si, Na, Mn, and Mg. The minor and trace elements removed include Co, Li, Sc, and possibly Sr, Ni, and Zn. Minor and trace elements added include Au, Ag, As, Sb, S, and possibly F, Cu, Pb, and Zr. On the basis of proximity, time constraints, and a similar ore mineral assemblage, gold mineralization at Anomaly A is interpreted to be a distal equivalent of the intrusion-related gold mineralization at the nearby Clarence Stream Main zone deposit. The Homestake gold mine is one of the largest and oldest continuously operating gold mines in orth Ame rica. To date this mine has produced in excess of 128.000.000 tons of ore containing almost 34 million ounces of gold . Gold mine ralization is restricted to the Homestake Formation. This unit is a metamorphosed iron-formation which is enclosed by pellitic metasedime nts below (Poorman Formation) and a pellitic to qua rt zitic unit (Elli son Formation) above. The e ntire Precambrian sequence. in the Lead area. has been subjected to a multi-stage defo rmation episode which ha c reated an extremely complex structural setting for the Homestake orebodies. Metamorphic grade inc reases from greenschi st ro amphibolite in a northeast d irecti on acros the mine area. Present thickness of the Home take fo rmation va ric from O to »400 fee t. The amount of thicke ning and th inning which is attributable to tectonic deformation or original sedimenta ry di fferences is not known. Orebodies constitute onl y a small pe rcentage of the Homestake Formation and do not occur along a pa rticul ar stratigraphic pos ition within the unit. Gold i assoc iated with inc reased py rrhotite and a rsenopyrite concentrations within the iron formation. Inc reased \ cin qua rt z development and chl oritic alteration usuall y accompany this minerali zation. Local remobilizati on of mine ralization due to metamorphi sm has occurred. Homestake mine ralization has been shown to be of sy ngeneti c origin . Because no feeder zones have yet been recognized a di stal source for the mine ralization is inferred .

"Abstract - Gold mineralization in the Main Reef Complex at Sheba Gold Mine is hosted within shear zones in a sequence of shales and greywackes of the Fig Tree Group. Competency contrasts between these rocks and a steeply dipping chert unit provided a locus for the development of right lateral steeply dipping shear zones. A set of flatter dipping shear fractures crosscut these zones with their intersections defining a system of en échelon ore shoots.Mineralization is both of vein type and disseminated strata-controlled replacement type. The latter occurs mainly within the wall rocks to the shear zones. Arsenopyrite and pyrite are the major sulfides, with arsenopyrite being confined largely to greywacke beds and pyrite to the more iron-rich shale units. Gold was introduced, together with minor sphalerite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and early arsenopyrite, toward the end stages of a first pyrite phase. The mineralizing fluids were introduced along dilated cleavage planes and, emanating from these, produced a series of replacement fronts. Mineralization was syntectonic to late tectonic and occurred under conditions of progressive deformation, resulting in sulfides which are concentrated in the hinges of shear-related folds and semi­ massive sulfides within tension fractures which are folded, attenuated and fractured .An analysis of the structures shows a sequence of events in which an initial ductile simple-shear event with a steep sense of movement was succeeded by a more brittle strike-slip event. Mineralization is temporally related to the latter. This evolution in structural style was probably related to reactivation of the Sheba Fault as a transcurrent fault during emplacement of large granitoid bodies."

"Abstract - Oxide-facies banded iron formation in the Third Portage Lake area is hosted by ultramafic and calc-alkaline volcanic rocks and related sedimentary rocks of the Archean (2.8 Ga) Woodburn Lake Group, 80 km north of Baker Lake. These rocks record at least two phases of metamorphism/ metasomatism. Greenschist facies metamorphism, in the temperature range of 370°C to 520°C and at pressures above 2.3 kbar, has affected all rocks on a regional scale. Later mineralization and alteration of banded iron formation (BIF) and associated volcanic rocks resulted from metasomatic fluids which carried Mg, K, Ca, S, As, Cu and Au. These fluids were confined to ductile to brittle, cross-cutting and layer-parallel micro-shears developed in the thickened hinge region of a shallow plunging recumbent fold. Metasomatic reactions yielded cummingtonite + biotite-bearing assemblages which are associated with strongly mineralized iron formation. Pyrrhotite is the dominant sulfide phase and occurs within ductily deformed iron formation where it pervasively replaces magnetite. Minor fine-grained chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite generally occur as inclusions within pyrrhotite and recrystallized magnetite, and rarely as individual grains. Pyrite is restricted to brittlely deformed iron formation, and to the contact between iron formation and altered ultramafic rocks, where it is associated with quartz veins. Pyrite typically replaces pyrrhotite. Native gold is associated with both pyrrhotite and pyrite, but higher gold concentrations are associated with pyrite. Grunerite/Ca-amphibole + stilpnomelane and sparse pyrrhotite and pyrite characterize weakly mineralized iron formation. Within adjacent ultramafic rocks, metasomatic reactions yielded assemblages of interlayered Ca-amphibole + biotite, and talc + Ca-amphibole + carbonate + biotite. K-Ar geochronology on metasomatic biotite from mineralized BIF yielded a 1791 ± 32 Ma age.An epigenetic model is favored for the emplacement of gold. The age of the gold mineralization in the Third Portage Lake area is uncertain, but may be Proterozoic based on the preliminary isotopic age and by analogy with Proterozoic gold deposits elsewhere in this part of the Churchill Structural Province."

"Atikokan is 200 km west of Thunder Bay and earned its mining fame from the discovery of the Steep Rock Iron Range in the late 1930s. Gold, however, was discovered in the Atikokan and Mine Centre areas in the late 1800s and eventually led to one of Ontario's first gold camps, and a total production of approximately 52,000 oz of gold and 174,000 oz of silver from 218,000 tons milled.The general geology of the area consists of Early Precambrian rocks of the Wabigoon and Quetico subprovinces, separated by the east-trending Quetico Fault. The Wabigoon Subprovince, to the north, consists of metavolcanics, minor metasediments and granitic batholiths. The Quetico Subprovince consists of metasediments and granitoids. Small ultramafic plutons occur throughout the metasediments.Within a 50-km radius of Atikokan, more than 50 gold occurrences, prospects and past producers have been discovered since the 18oos. The Atikokan Gold Study performed by the Ontario Geological Sur vey (Wilkinson, 1980, 1982) defined three types of gold mineralization in which gold is concentrated in quartz and quartz-carbonate veins:I) Metavolcanic-Hosted, Stratabound Type-associated with altered felsic fragmental units and chemical sedimentary rocks; possible gold mineralization source rocks. The mineralization is due to metamorphogenic (epigenetic) enrichment. Associated with dynamic metamorphism events and/or felsic intrusive events.2) Marmion Lake Batholith Type-occurs within the gneissic core of the batholith associated with north east-trending lineaments, representing faults or shear zones. Mineralized veins are related to several periods of deformation and shearing, suggesting that metamorphogenic veins were produced during dynamic metamorphism.3) Contact Zone Type -occurs in the contact zone rocks between gneissic batholiths and meta volcanic belts. Hydrothermal solutions produced during several deformational periods acted to leach and concentrate gold mineralization. Localized, discontinuous shear zones host the epigenetic (metamorphogenic) veins.Twenty-one properties in the area were mapped and sampled, and researched petrographically and geochemically. Geological data from the Atikokan Economic Geologist Program of the Ontario Geological Survey are used in discussing the types of mineralization, genetic models, and exploration targets and techiques."

The Snow Lake-Wekusko Lake region of northern Manitoba conta ins numerous lode gold occurrences, including the largest gold deposit in the Churchill Prov ince, the Nor Acme mine. The Aphebian volcanic and sedimentary rocks of this region are comprised of submarine volcanic strata, overlain by turbidites, both of the Amisk Group, and fluvi atile sedimenta ry strata and bimodally composed subaerial volcanic rocks of the overlying Missi Group. Gold occurs as: 1) accessory gold in volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, 2) lode gold in shear zones related to sy n- to post-FI thrust fa ults, and 3) lode-gold associated with post-F2 fault . An alteration a emblage of biotite, al bite and calc ite is associated with both groups of lode-gold deposits, and has been superimposed on the regionall y-developed metamorphic assemblages. AJthough these deposi ts are spatial ly related to britt le-ductile faul ts of different initial ages, they appear to have all fo rmed after the major period of reg ional fo lding and metamorphism, and thus may be penecontemporaneous. The alteration is different from the sericite-ankerite-quartz assemblage that is typically associated with gold deposits in Superio r Prov ince. Deposits in thi s area of Churchill Prov ince may have formed either at a higher temperature or a deeper structu ra l level than tho e in Superior Prov ince.

The Sulphide-Preview Lakes area is located 45 km northeast of La Ronge in northern Saskatchewan. It lies within the southern portion of the Proterozoic La Ronge Volcanic-Sedimentary Belt. Two styles of gold mineralization are present in the Sulphide Lake area , stratabound gold mineralization is intimately associated with a pyrite-pyrrhotite-arsenopyrite-bearing graphitic argillite unit within a sequence of intermediate to felsic volcaniclastics. Past operators established three mineralized zones along this horizon with combined reserves for two of the zones, of about 175,000 tons at 0.22 oz/ton Au. In the Preview Lake area , gold mineralization occurs in variably sheared gabbro/quartz diorite sills within a mixed sedimentary-felsic volcaniclastic sequence. Gold occurs with arsenopyrite, pyrite and minor chalcopyrite associated with quartz veins and stringers. A sulphidebearing graphitic argillite unit occurs in close proximity to the mineralized shears. Past operators delineated seven mineralized shear zones, two of which were drilltested. Average gold grades reported are in the 0.1 to 0.2 oz/ton range with erratic values up to 5.0 oz/ton.

RICE LAKE-BERESFORD LAKE area, situated 100 miles northeast of Winnipeg (Figure 1), is Manitoba's foremost gold mining district, although it is exceeded in gold production in the Province by the Flin Flon base-metal mining district. At present, the area is producing at the rate of about one and three-quarter million dollars annually, almost entirely from the San Antonio and Gunnar mines. The total production to date is about $14,000,000. Of this total, over $7,000,000 has come from the San Antonio mine, over $2,000,000 from the Gunnar mine, about $4,000,000 from the Central Manitoba mine, and the balance from several smaller properties. The writer has led Geological Survey parties in the area for the past four summers. The present paper gives a summary of the results of this work and also includes the findings of C. S. Lord, who was in charge of a party for one year. Much valuable information was obtained from earlier published reports on the area and from officials of mining companies, to whom the writer is indebted for their kindly co-operation. It is impossible in this short paper to give proper credit to the earlier workers or to discuss certain points o disagreement between their conclusions and those presented here. LOCATION OF PROPERTY THE property of Caribou Gold Mines, Limited, is situated in the north-eastern part of Halifax county, seven miles south of the Canadian National railway line at Upper Musquodoboit. Approach to the village is by a secondary road, improved recently by waste rock from the mine dump. A two-wire telephone line, seven miles long, built and owned by the present operators, provides communication to the nearest telephone exchange, Parker's Corner. HISTORY In 1870, the Caribou area was recognized as a proclaimed gold district. From then on, operations were intermittent, with periods of considerable activity by small companies until there were no fewer than seven mines in a district two miles long by three-quarters of a mile wide. These were the Holman, Truro, Caffrey, MacDonald or Elk, Lake, Dixon, and Hilchey properties, all of which have had separate stamp-mills, and have produced gold for varying periods. Depths of the workings range from 100 feet to 1,000 feet. Power was generated at each property by means of steam boilers. At the present time, the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, controls all the leased areas, approximately 800 acres, and is operating by means of one central vertical shaft. GEOLOGY The district in and about Caribou Mines has an elevation of approximately five hundred feet above sea level. The area is fairly well wooded, with rock outcrops here and there. These outcrops, along with information from test-pits and shafts, have been the basis for the very excellent geological map of the district prepared by E. R. Faribault some years ago. The rock structure, which is one of the best examples in Nova Scotia of an elliptical dome, has its anticlinal axis in a northeast-southwest direction, and flat plunges in the same directions.
