Introduction The Wakefield plant of the Aluminum Company of Canada, Limited - a member of the Aluminum, Limited, group of companies - produces magnesia, magnesia fertilizer ingredient, and hydrated lime, from brucitic limestone. Wakefield is on the Gatineau river in Wakefield township, Quebec, some 22 miles north of Ottawa. The plant is near the western bank of the river adjacent to the Ottawa-Maniwaki highway and branch line of the Canadian Pacific railway. The plant is unique in the sense that it is the only place in Canada where brucite is processed. It is also distinguished for its outstanding safety record, as not a single lost-time accident occurred during either 1948 or 1949. The plant is amply provided with safety and comfort provisions in keeping with the standard practice in all of the twelve plants operated in Canada by Alcan and its associated companies. History Following the identification of brucite in the Rutherglen and Bryson districts in Ontario, occurrences of the mineral were discovered in the Wakefield area, Quebec, in 1939. After exploratory work on these deposits and investigation by the Bureau of Mines, Ottawa, on a method of extracting the brucite from the ore, a plant for treating the ore from the Maxwell property was built in 1941 by the Aluminum Company of Canada and commenced operations in early 1942. The process used is more or less in accordance with the method worked out by Mr. M. F. Goudge of the Bureau of Mines.

BRUCITE associated with highly metamorphosed Precambrian limestone was discovered in the vicinity of Rutherglen in northern Ontario by the writer during field work on the limestones of that district in 1937, and later was identified in similar limestone at Bryson and Wakefield, Quebec. The brucite occurs as granules disseminated through the limestone (Figure 1) and comprises from 20 to 35 per cent of the rock. Such rocks may be referred to as predazzites or pencatites, depending on the proportions of the constituent minerals. In this paper, however, the general term brucitic limestone is used to designate limestone containing brucite. In none of the deposits does the magnesia content of the rock approach that of magnesite, and in the deposits near Bryson and Wakefield the magnesia content is only that of dolomite. Therefore, without some method of concentrating the brucite, the deposits would be of little or no more value as a source of magnesia than is ordinary pure dolomite, which is abundant in many parts of Canada. Investigations in the laboratories of the Bureau of Mines have, however, resulted in the development of a method whereby, from certain of the deposits, pure calcined brucite, or magnesia, in granular form can be obtained, apparently at a cost that will enable it to compete in eastern Canada with imported magnesia. The granular magnesia so obtained appears to be highly suitable for use in basic refractories, for making magnesium metal, and for various other purposes for which magnesia is commonly used. Prospecting in the neighbourhoods of the original discoveries has resulted in a number of other deposits being found in each of the three areas, and there is now apparently available s1.dficient brucitic limestone of a grade that will lend itself to commercial exploitation to supply for many years a large part of the present and prospective Canadian market for magnesia and its products. Furthermore, it is expected that additional deposits will be discovered as prospectors and others become more familiar with the appearance of brucitic limestone.

Introduction The subject of basic refractories is daily becoming of increased importance in metallurgical processes, and there is a constantly growing necessity for the development of better materials. This fact, together with the realization that Canada possesses one of the best sources of such refractories in the British Empire, if not in the world, made it appear? advisable that the subject be presented to the Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress at the 1927 meeting. Having been in close touch with developments in the Canadian product during the past five years, G. M. Carrie was requested to prepare such a paper. The Canadian producers of magnesia refractories have succeeded in developing the product to a place where it has almost entirely displaced imported materials from the Canadian market. These developments were made possible by a close study of the methods of preparation of the material, and by an exceedingly careful control of the manufacturing process so as to obtain a thorough blending of the different constituents with the resultant uniformity of composition. This point is very important to the metallurgist, as un-uniform materials are a potent cause of difficulties in most manufacturing processes and the constant trend is towards their elimination. The temperature at which the Canadian material is burned ensures high specific gravity and thorough shrinkage. The grain size of the product is so controlled that the voids are only just sufficient to allow of proper bonding, thus making possible a dense, hard bottom affording high resistance to erosion and shock. Careful proportioning of the constituent elements absolutely prevents disintegration.

The Kilmar dolomitic magnesite deposit~ in sourhwesr Quebec lie in Grenville Province sedimentary rocks that strike north and dip steeply west. The sediments comprise quartzitic, carbonate and argillaceous members. The middle or carbonate member hosts the magnesite and, like the two other members, has been intensely mewmorphosed. Magnesite occurs as lenticular shaped zones of altered limestone and is mixed with 5 to 30% dolomite crystals. Diopside, serpentine and mica are common accessory minerals. Magnesite appears to have formed from merasomarism of all or part of the carbonate member due to intrusion of hot magnesia-rich solutions. Magnesite is mined from a 490 m vertical shaf1 and is milled and burned into clinkers, which then are shipped 10 pyroprocessing industries around the world.

A large magnesite-talc body is locared in Delora Township, 11 km sourh-southeasr of Timmins, Onrario. The deposit occurs in part of an Archean greensrone belt dominated by volcanic and sedimenrary rocks and large bodies of ultramafic intrusions. The magnesite-talc zane is abour 1800 m long, has a maximum width of 300 m and has been drilled ro 120 m below surface. Chemical analyses of rhe main carbonate zane average 20 ro 28% soluble MgO (magnesia), 5 ro 6% rota/ iron oxide and less rhan 0.1 % CaO (lime). Mineralogically, the zane consists of approximately 54% magnesite, 28% rate, /5% quartz and 3% hematire. Perrographic srudies suggest that rhe various assemblages of magnesite, rate, quartz and serpentine were derived from a parenr serpenrinire (after dunire). An early carbonitization stage, which produced a high-magnesite, low-talc assemblage, preceded a farer decarbonitizarion stage, which formed rhe main magnesite-talc assemblage. Despite a favourably low calcium oxide content of rhe magnesite-talc rock, considerable iron in the magnesire /at rice has limited the quality of the beneficiared product: rhe besr flotation concentrate to dare yields 92 to 94% dead-burned MgO. High quality steel production requires extended treatment of the steel in the steel ladle. This has a remarkable impact on the steel ladle refractories, e.g. the need for high performance functional refractories like purging plugs. Operational changes such as increasing tapping temperatures, longer hold times and more aggressive secondary metallurgy are countered by the need for thinner refractory linings and longer refractories life. These combined factors have led to a resurgence in interest in magnesium aluminate spinel raw materials. Magnesium aluminate spinels have been used in steel-making refractories for many years, in a variety of different forms. This paper reviews the production, properties and performance of spinels. Recent developments in the applications of spinels will also be discussed.

Magnesium has excellent bio-compatibility in terms of its density, strength, elastic modulus and toxicity. However, due to its poor corrosion performance, so far magnesium has not been successfully used in the human body as a permanent implant material. Nevertheless, there is a possibility to utilize the low corrosion resistance of magnesium to make magnesium into a temporary implant component that can gradually dissolve in the human body after surgical region heals. This will avoid the secondary operation to remove the temporarily implanted component and the chronic inflammatory discomfort caused by the implant. This paper is aimed at exploring the possibility of using magnesium as a degradable bio-material through investigating the corrosion behaviors of pure magnesium and surface treated magnesium in a simulated body fluid (SBF) solution. It was found that magnesium corroded rapidly in the SBF solution, resulting in vigorous hydrogen evolution and a strong alkalization effect. Hence, it is impractical to use magnesium as a permanent implanted material or even a degradable implant. However, a proper anodizing treatment can significantly improve the corrosion resistance of magnesium, and hence slower down the hydrogen evolution and alkalization processes, which will allow to control the corrosion or degradation of magnesium at a desired rate in the human body. With a controllable corrosion rate, it is believed that magnesium as a degradable implanted material will be eventually achievable.

Magnesium derived foams were prepared by using the so-called baking of powder blended precursor material method. This method comprises mixing magnesium powder with a small fraction of blowing agent (ZrH2, Cs2CO3 and CaH2) and Ni like catalyst, compacting this mix and creating a foam by heat treatment above the magnesium melting temperature. The resulting samples were characterised by microscopy, gas adsorption (BET method) and by small angle neutron scattering. Several mathematical models were used in order to determine particle size distribution, fractal dimension and total pore volume fractions.

In the past years the enormous weight saving potential of magnesium sheet has been demonstrated by various research projects all over the world. It has been shown magnesium flat products can benefit automotive, aviation, machine tool and consumer electronics industries. Major material problems such as poor formability, corrosion resistance and high production cost still inhibit the application of magnesium sheets in large scale production. The present contribution outlines achievements in casting and rolling technology. The authors developed an adapted strip casting process in which near-net-shape rolling feedstock of several wrought alloys has been produced. During the rolling process, various parameters were varied in order to modify the microstructure and surface quality of sheet. Several temperature cycles, strains, lubricants, roll surface structures and roll coatings have been analyzed. The sheets were examined and tested in deep-drawing experiments. Suitable rolling schedules have been developed for standard and modified wrought alloys. The study concludes with an overview of current industrial solutions and an estimation of the potential cost savings that might result from the adaptation of the process that has been developed.

Laboratory studies had shown that the magnetite contained in serpentine asbestos ore was not uniformly distributed. Ore particles containing chrysotiye fiber responded to a magnetic f field; particles containing little or no chrysotile were essentially non-magnetic. Larger-scale tests, run with a magnetic pulley being fed various asbestos samples ranging in size from 1/4 inch to 5 inches, confirmed that magnetic separation could be used as a concentration step in an asbestos mill. Magnetic concentration was installed at the Black Lake and National mills of Lac d'Amiante du Quebec and has allowed the extraction of lower-grade ore, increasing the life of the mines. In addition, preconcentration early in the flowsheet increased the value of the feed to the fiber recovery section. An increase in fiber production was achieved, as well as a decrease in maintenance costs due to removal of flow-grade tailings early in the flowsheet. Magnetic concentration of a coarse tailings from the mill resulted in recovery of additional fiber previously discarded to tailings.

"Red Dog is one of the largest zinc mines in the world both in terms of reserves and annual production. In 2013, Red Dog produced 551,300 mt of contained zinc and 96,700 mt of contained lead. The mine, which is located in Northwest Alaska, is a partnership between Teck Alaska Incorporated, the operator of the mine and NANA Regional Corporation Inc, the local land owner. The Aqqaluk deposit, which is the current source of ore, has an average grade of 15.8% Zn, 4.1% Pb and 73 g/t Ag with the main minerals being sphalerite, galena, pyrite, barite and quartz. Surveys of the zinc flotation circuit at Red Dog identified that a substantial amount of fully liberated, sub 20 micron sphalerite particles were being lost to final tailings. As a means of improving fine sphalerite recovery, a four month plant trial of magnetic conditioning was conducted in the zinc retreat circuit. Magnetic conditioning technology has already been commissioned in several concentrators around the world to agglomerate fine paramagnetic minerals, increasing their probability of bubble collision and recovery in a flotation cell. The results of the four month plant trial at Red Dog showed that at a high level of confidence, a 1% increase in zinc recovery or zinc recovery and zinc concentrate grade combined was achieved with magnetic conditioning. The resulting economic benefit, which is also at a high level of confidence, is significant to Red Dog and therefore, magnetic conditioning has been permanently incorporated into the Red Dog zinc flotation circuit.IntroductionRed Dog is the largest zinc mine in North America and represents approximately 29% of North American zinc concentrate production. The mine is located in northwest Alaska, approximately 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle and 50 miles inland from the Chukchi Sea. ABSTRACT Segregation of sphalerite minerals in zinc concentrates into christophite, marmatite and ordinary sphalerite by means of magnetic fractionation is investigated. A Frantz ferromagnetic filter, 1.2 amp., and a Dings magnet, 0.3 amp., is used to fractionate seven zinc concentrates produced in the Province of Quebec. The Dings magnetic product contains the pyrrhotite, and the sphalerite as christophite. The Frantz magnetic product contains sphalerite as marmatite, while the Frantz nonmagnetic product contains ordinary sphalerite. The results indicate that the magnetic susceptibility of sphalerite increases with increasing isomorphous iron content and that a satisfactory separation into christophite, marmaite, and ordinary sphalerite may be accomplished by magnetic fractionation. INTRODUCTION SPHALERITE, the chief ore of zinc, is almost never pure zinc sulphide. Iron is almost always present isomorphously replacing an ?equivalent amount of zinc. What may be referred to as 'ordinary' sphalerite contains up to 10 per cent iron. More highly ferriferous varieties, with 10 to 26 per cent or more iron, have been named marmatite .and christophite.

A study was conducted to investigate high gold grades in water lines and carbon fines collected from the Musselwhite gold recovery circuit. It was discovered that fine magnetic particles in the overflow from the carbon fines settling tank launder had high gold grades ranging from 2,000 to7,000 g/t. The -37 micron fraction had up to 17,000 g/t gold. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the gold was attached to the surface of iron particles. The objective of the study was to identify possible mechanisms that result in the attachment of the gold to the magnetic iron particle surface and to recommend process modifications that would reduce these types of gold losses around the carbon circuits. Solid and solution samples were collected from the gold recovery circuit and analysed. Two possible mechanisms were identified including gold cementation onto iron and heterocoagulation of colloidal gold onto iron oxides in the elution column. Possible sources of the colloidal gold include reduction of gold cyanide complex to metallic gold in the carbon regeneration kiln and gold detached from cathode in EW cell. Based on SEM+EDX, the sources of iron were natural magnetite and roasted iron sulphides. Thermal reduction of gold is believed to be the cause of dendritic gold from the carbon regeneration kiln.

Removal of toxic anions from aqueous solution was studied using a Magnetic Ion Exchange (MIEX) resin which is a polyacrylic, strong base resin. Gravity based settling is made more efficient due to the magnetic nature of the resin which is advantageous over conventional ion exchange resins. In addition, the magnetic microspheres of MIEX have larger surface area in comparison to conventional ion exchange resins. Over the years MIEX has been successfully used and has gained significant popularity for efficiently removing dissolved organic matter from wastewater and groundwater. In the present study the efficiency of the MIEX resin was tested for the removal of chromium(VI), molybdenium(VI), vanadium(V) and arsenic(V) anions. Effects of pH (2-10) and temperature (25oC-55oC) were examined. In general, low solution pH values were favorable for anion uptake by MIEX. Except for chromium(VI), the metal ion uptake was significantly increased by the increase in solution temperature. The adsorption data were analysed on the basis of chemical speciation and heterogeneous kinetic models.

Along with gravity separation and froth flotation, magnetic separation is one of the most common techniques for separating minerals. Minerals are separated by a magnetic force that is dependent on a combination of the applied magnetic field, the magnetic field gradient and the magnetic properties of the minerals themselves. Minerals may be classified as diamagnetic, paramagnetic or ferromagnetic based on the way they interact in a magnetic field. The magnetic susceptibility of a material may be determined by using a vibrating sample magnetometer to determine the magnetic moment of the material in an applied magnetic field and then converting this measured moment into the material?s magnetic susceptibility. In the case of rare earth minerals, magnetic separation is commonly used to remove ferromagnetic iron-bearing gangue minerals and to concentrate paramagnetic valuable minerals such as monazite and xenotime. These magnetic separation steps are frequently preceded by a gravity separation step as many iron oxides and rare earth minerals have specific gravities that are much larger than those of typical gangue minerals. By varying the magnetic field intensity it may be possible to use magnetic separation to selectively separate the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic minerals that report to the concentrate after gravity separation. Test work on a Canadian rare earth ore has shown that a gravity concentration step using a Knelson concentrator was able to selectively concentrate heavy magnetic minerals as evidenced by increased recoveries, relative to the Knelson tailings and fresh feed, after processing through a wet variable intensity magnetic separator. Mass pull to the Knelson concentrate was 4.5 % and the magnetic recovery of this concentrate, at 0.94 T, was approximately 40 % higher than the magnetic recovery from the Knelson tailings (70 % versus 30 %). The products of the wet high intensity magnetic separation were also analysed using a vibrating sample magnetometer to determine the magnetic susceptibilities of the various concentrate and tailings products.

"Absolute magnetite contents were determined for asbestos specimens in various stages of milling by using a Faraday-type thermomagnetic balance. Comparison of these results with magnetic ratings (MR) supplied by the mining companies cooperating in this study reveals strong scatter. The main cause of this scatter is thought to be that the MR values were obtained in magnetic fields well below the saturating field of magnetite (5,000 oe). However, only the saturation moment is an intrinsic property and consequently must be used for the purpose of obtaining reliable estimates of the magnetite content. Curie points indicate that virtually pure magnetite and possibly Ni3Fe is present in all samples, and another phase, probably (Cr, Al) magnetite, is present in a few samples. The susceptibility in fields stronger than 5,000 oe is positive and falls in the normal paramagnetic range, whereas sy nthetic chrysotile exhibits weak diamagnetism. This suggests that, as a general rule, the least adulterated natural chrysotile concurs with the samples showing the smallest positive susceptibility above 5,000 oe. The magnetite appears to increase in quantity with a decrease in fibre length and to be somewhat more uniform in distribution for samples showing substantial fiberization (opening of the fibres)."

Introduction Despite the fact that the .association of magnetite with chrysotile asbestos in the parent producing area of the world, the Thetford Mines - Black Lake area, has been recognized since the ores of that region were first known, magnetic methods were not extensively employed in exploration for asbestos until about the beginning of 1949. Since then, large areas of Ontario, Quebec, and the eastern United States have been prospected both by aeromagnetic and conventional ground magnetic methods. Prior to 1949, a limited amount of magnetic work had been done, notably that of A.H. Miller (1, pp. 184-186), which was carried out in conjunction with the geological survey of the Thetford area by H. C. Cooke (2) in the years of 1930 to 1932. At that time, Miller pointed out that the occurrence of asbestos is associated with very large magnetic 'anomalies' and that, within the Pennington dyke, an area of asbestos- bearing peridotite could be distinguished, by the anomalies, from adjacent areas of non-asbestos ?-bearing peridotite. Since he .also observed large anomalies in what were believed to be ?barren areas, Miller concluded, however, that the magnetometer could hardly be of much or any value in the direct location of asbestos War .and post-war demands on known reserves of asbestos ore, however, stimulated the search for new deposits, and an economical and rapid method of directing speculative drilling was most desirable.
