"Gold losses related to carbonaceous matter (CM) during processing are a significant problem in the gold processing industry. Inherent CM in gold ores can behave similarly to activated carbon in its ability to adsorb gold cyanide. This phenomenon is termed preg-robbing as the surface adsorbed gold cannot, for the most part, be recovered. Research has identified that gold adsorption by inherent CM is linked to the specific surface area, pore structure, degree of C disorder and surface functional groups. One of the strategies to inhibit CM preg-robbing prior to leaching is a chemical oxidation; a process linked to modification of the surface functionality. In this study, the variability in gold cyanide adsorption due to oxidation with different reagents has been investigated. Variability in gold cyanide adsorption by CM is examined in relation to structural and surface modifications using TOF-SIMS, XPS and Raman spectroscopy.INTRODUCTION A major obstacle for effective gold recovery during carbon in leach (CIL) or carbon in pulp (CIP) processes carbonaceous gold ores is the presence of carbonaceous matter (c-matter) which has the ability to adsorb, or preg-rob gold from the cyanide leach solution. It can be responsible for poor recoveries as the carbonaceous materials (CMs) within the ore competes with activated carbon used during the leaching and adsorption phase of processing (Cay, 2014). Preg-robbing capacity can vary significantly with mild preg-robbing ores showing absorption capacities of less than 1 g Au/t ore, while severe preg-robbing ores may have CM with the capacity to preg-rob more than 500 g Au/t ore (Dunne, 2007). Research by a number of groups have shown that the degree of C disorder has some influence on the ability of the carbonaceous material to adsorb Au(CN)2- (Miller et al, 2005, Helm et al, 2009, Hart et al, 2010). It is also apparent the adsorption characteristics of carbonaceous material is affected by changes in surface chemistry (Dimov, 2016). Various treatment including; flotation to remove the carbonaceous material (Wills, 2010), addition of surface blinding agents (for example kerosene) to passivate or blanket the carbon surfaces (Dimov, 2016), addition of strong adsorbents (eg. activated carbon or resin) to compete with the carbonaceous material and passivation or surface coating by oxidation (pressure, roasting, chlorination and biological oxidation), have been employed prior to leaching in an attempt to minimize the gold losses (Dunne, 2013)."

Gold losses must be controlled during extracting processes, especially during cyanidation. Otherwise recovery decreases and therefore the profitability of projects too. One of the phenomena that generate such losses is known as preg-robbing which occurs when some mineral constituent adsorbs aurocyanide complex from a cyanide solution. There are some laboratory methods to identify potential preg-robbing in gold ores, highlighting the PRP method, the BGMI test, and cyanidation tests by conventional agitation without activated carbon (BRP) and with activated carbon (CIL). For this study we performed an initial characterization of a sample from Antioquia - Colombia and then we carried out the methods described above in order to identify the presence of carbonaceous matter. We obtained a percentage of preg-robbing of 78.7% by applying the BGMI test; the preg-robbing potential by the PRP method was 97.9% with an extraction of 0.77% and an inferred recovery of 36.6% if preg-robbing did not occur. Finally we obtained under the BRT test a recovery of 0%, while for CIL test an extraction of 33.6% what confirmed the presence of preg-robbers agents in the gold ore. We conducted all tests in the Institute of Minerals - CIMEX at Universidad Nacional de Colombia - Medellin.

"Methane emission and the desorption characteristics of vertical borehole coal samples of Greenhills multiple seams in the vicinity of Elkford, British Columbia were investigated. Three vertical boreholes at depths of 335 m, 380 m and 395 m were drilled along the west wall of an active open pit mine and 44 core samples from various coal seams were obtained for desorption studies.The results are presented in three tables and illustrated with six figures. The methane content was found to increase significantly at depths greater than 200 m. The adsorption equation by Kim and the properties of the coal have been used to predict the methane content and these were compared with the measured values by the direct method.IntroductionThe coalification of plant material in the sedimentary rock produces different ranks of co al and gases of various composition. The gas mixtures are retained in coal beds and rock strata under pressure. The gas content in a coal bed varies considerably depending on the rank of coal and the depth of overburden. The gas content is defined as the volume of gases adsorbed in a unit weight of coal materials. The net amount of gases remaining in a coal seam depends on the difference in the rate of generation of methane by geo-thermal heat and the rate of diffusion of the gases out of the coal bed through sedimentary cover. The major factor that causes the change in rank and the liberation of gases is the temperature, which is governed by the thermal conductivity of sedimentary cover and the heat flux through the underlying rocks. The rate of diffusion of the gases out of the coal is governed by the porosity of the overlying rocks and the degree of fracture. The measured values of gas content in major North American coal beds are from zero up to 24 cm3 per gram of coal(1,2). A gas content of 2.5 to 9 cm3/g is considered ""gassy"" and that of 9 cm3/g or higher is considered ""very gassy"" for underground mining(3). Normally, the gas mixtures released from bituminous coal in Canada contain 90 to 98% methane and the remainder is made up of CO2, N2, 02, H2, He and other hydrocarbons(4)."

Mineral resource development activities impact the health and well-being of many people, from workers, to families and surrounding communities. In the decade up to 2010, mining revenues increased from 6% to 14% of Australian GDP, and minerals contributed 55% of total exports, with a growth in mining employment from 1% to 1.7% of the national workforce (Connolly and Orsmund, 2011). The growth in Australia?s minerals operations is mostly located in remote areas, or in rural communities with a limited population. As a result, operations have increasingly implemented long distance commuting (LDC) programs, often called ?fly-in, fly-out? (FIFO) and ?drive-in, drive-out? (DIDO), as a staffing strategy to meet rapid industry growth in locations with limited local populations. The rapid expansion of the minerals industry has resulted in considerable public debate about the benefits and costs to all sectors of Australian society. In response to the concerns of constituencies from many parts of Australia, the Minister for Regional Australia, Regional Development and Local Government, The Hon Simon Crean MP, asked the House Standing Committee on Regional Australia on Tuesday 23 August 2011 to inquire into and report on the use of ?fly-in, fly-out? (FIFO) and ?drive-in, drive-out? (DIDO) workforce practices in Regional Australia. The recently published report highlights the national interest and the diverse opinions about this practice in Australia. Resource extraction companies have developed several options to meet the accommodation requirements of their long distance commuting workforce. In this paper, initial results are reported from an ongoing survey of FIFO (and other non-residential) resource industry workers (n = 286) in the Australian resource extraction industries. The purpose of this study was to better understand how accommodation arrangements may impact on the health, wellbeing and job satisfaction of non-resident workers; and to attempt to find a relationship between different accommodation variables and workforce wellbeing and retention. In doing this it investigates evidence for the linkage between accommodation factors, hours of work, health, well-being, job satisfaction and job retention in the LDC work force.

In this paper a possible methodology to supplement a predictive control approach is reported. The benefits deriving from the application of a predictive control on complex buildings lay on its capability of adapting in advance to the conditioning needs of indoor environments. In fact, the mere reactive control is usually affected by response delays, mainly determined by latency intrinsic in systems and by the massive nature of buildings, which slows down their response to changeable inputs. Hence, systems are too often solicited at their maximum power to recover against comfort deficiencies, and high consumptions are had. This paper reports on the application of a predictive approach to the Passeig de Gracia (PdG) metro station in Barcelona, which is a considerably high energy demanding building and where ventilation systems are used to control both comfort and air quality. Although an extensive simulation for estimating energy savings obtainable through that approach is currently ongoing, in this paper we detail the several components which make up a ?predictive control framework? and we perform a preliminary demonstrative simulation. In particular, the whole setup is formed by: a detailed model of PdG, which simulates the station?s ?real state?; a control model, which optimizes a given cost-function; probabilistic predictive models to infer the future state of the systems, given the assumptions on the control actions by the control module. The outcomes of this paper show that the procedure is applicable and preliminary results over a short simulation horizon of half a day are reported.

Located in North West Tanzania, Buzwagi is an underground narrow-vein gold mine owned by Barrick Gold. The plant was commissioned in 2000. The reserves are estimated to be more than 25 years. The ore, containing gold, silver and copper mineralization in sulphides, is processed at 3,300 tpd. This paper presents the results of an investigation to determine the performance of an ammonia-cyanide leaching approach to recover gold from two samples. Coarse gold was recovered by gravity prior to leaching. The gravity tailings had the following composition; 1.97 g/t Au and 0.31% copper for the medium cyanide soluble copper (MCSC) sample and 2.80 g/t Au and 0.53% Cu for the high cyanide soluble copper (HCSC) sample. Experiments were conducted for 72 hours in stirred tank reactors with monitoring and control of parameters. The straight cyanidation produced gold extractions of 76.1% for the MCSC sample and 84.6% for the HCSC sample. Associated cyanide additions were 6.1 kg/t and 11.5 kg/t respectively. The gold extraction of the MCSC sample was improved to 88.8% using 350 ppm NaCN and 700 ppm ammonia. The associated cyanide and ammonia additions were 2.5 kg/t and 1.7 kg/t respectively. For the HCSC sample, 82.5% gold extraction was obtained using 500 ppm NaCN and 600 ppm ammonia. The cyanide addition and ammonia additions were reduced to 3.8 kg/t and 1.0 kg/t respectively. No significant decrease in gold extraction was noticed when the cyanide and ammonia were reduced to 150 ppm and 500 ppm respectively. In the presence of ammonia, a significant amount of cyanide was oxidized to cyanate by the cupric ion. In the absence of ammonia, the formation of copper cyanide was the predominant reaction responsible for consumption of cyanide.

"Block caving is the preferred underground mining method to profitably extract massive, low-grade orebodies; however, lack of cave access inhibits understanding the rockmass response to mining, which is needed for safer, more productive operations. Combining large datasets from multiple sources with virtual reality scientific visualization (VRSV) is an alternative method for understanding complex cave behaviour, by providing virtual access to the cave. A customized VRSV module was developed at UNSW Australia to investigate rockmass response to undercut developments at a case-study block caving operation. Time/sequence effects are investigated in rockmass response to blasting, which is an important factor in hard-rock mines.RÉSUMÉ La méthode d’extraction souterraine par blocs foudroyés est la méthode préférentielle pour extraire rentablement des gisements massifs à faible teneur. Toutefois, le manque d’accès à la chambre restreint la compréhension de la réponse de la masse rocheuse à l’exploitation, ce qui est nécessaire pour obtenir des opérations plus sécuritaires et plus productives. La combinaison de grands ensembles de données de multiples sources avec la visualisation scientifique par réalité virtuelle (VRSV) constitue un autre moyen de comprendre le comportement complexe de la chambre en fournissant un accès virtuel à la chambre. Un module de VRSV sur mesure a été développé à l’Université de Nouvelles-Galles du Sud (UNSW) en Australie afin d’étudier, dans une étude de cas d’une exploitation par blocs foudroyés, la réponse de la masse rocheuse aux développements de galeries de sous-cavage. Block caving is an underground mining method for the profitable extraction of massive, low-grade orebodies. Lately, it has become the mining method of choice, for many mining companies, because of depleted high-grade orebodies, and declining metal market prices. Block cave mining, however, still faces several challenges. Lack of access to the cave remains a major issue in understanding the rockmass response to mining for method optimisation. Improving our understanding of the rockmass response to caving will lead to safer and more productive operations. Combining large datasets from multiple sources with virtual reality scientific visualisation (VRSV) is a viable alternative to understanding complex cave behaviour without access to the cave. This is achieved using immersive environments with the ability to view complex multi-dimensional data (beyond 3D) graphically. VRSV offers a unique platform where it becomes possible to immerse the multi-disciplinary experts, and/or management team, in a virtual mine environment for quick decision making and fast resolution to conflicting conclusions. The underground mining system is complex due to multiple interrelating factors such as geology, excavation geometries, stress and time. Block caving is even more complex than most underground mining methods due to the network of tunnels required, and the use of induced stress, among others. As a consequence of the complexity in the block caving environment, it is vital that the mining system is analysed holistically, as a system, rather than optimizing individual factors one at a time. This paper presents a customised software module developed for use in the Advanced Visualisation Interactive Environment (AVIE) at The University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia, to enable VRSV investigation into block cave mining systems (BCMS). This approach has the potential to provide a better understanding of the effect of time in in rock engineering, which has proven to be an important factor in hard rock mines (Ma & Daemen, 2006; Malan et al., 1997; Suorineni, 2010) but never validated. This work back analyses the early undercutting phase of a case study block caving operation with the view to understanding time/sequence effects. There is evidence that heterogeneous rockmass time-dependent behaviour governs the seismic response of the rockmass following undercut developments.

This work presents early results from the first study to optimize the hydrodynamics of a Plasma Lift Reactor (PLR). The PLR is designed to break down organic contaminants in aqueous solutions. New experimental results are presented for air/water tests and for plasma degradation of organic contaminants in Bayer liquor. In addition, a multiphase Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model has been developed which predicts the hydrodynamic behavior in the PLR. These results of this work suggest the PLR is effective at reducing contaminants in the Bayer liquor and that the CFD model adequately describes the hydrodynamic flow.

"Current industry practice for HPGR assessment and sizing relies on conducting a series of tests using pilot-scale machines with roll diameters of 700 mm to 1000 mm. Substantial amounts of sample are required for such pilot test programs, typically 1 to 10 tonnes of the sample is needed depending on the level of study and complexity of the resource. Collection of large quantities of representative samples during the early stage development is challenging and expensive, thus significantly hinders the HPGR technology from being incorporated into early-stage designs. A robust and reliable laboratory test is therefore needed to allow a fair consideration of HPGR for early stage projects. With support from the Canadian Mineral Industry Research Organization (CAMIRO), the NBK Institute of Mining Engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC) developed a suite of Piston Press bench-scale tests that correlated to pilot and full scale HPGR operating information (Davaanyam, 2015; Davaanyam et al, 2015; McClintock, 2018). The Piston Press Tests (PPTs) are capable of assessing the HPGR technology at the scoping, pre-economic analysis (PEA), and pre-feasibility (PFS) stages of project development. This paper will briefly describe the theory on which the PPTs are based, and then presents a case study conducted for a copper deposit to show how the PPTs are being used for scoping and pre-feasibility level studies. Specifically, the PPTs are being used to provide information for preliminary sizing and selection of an HPGR and to assess the effect of ore variability on HPGR performance. The results are also applied to developing HPGR circuit designs and can be incorporated in simulation so that optimum design parameters can be selected.INTRODUCTION It is widely accepted that high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) offer a viable energy-efficient solution for the modern comminution flowsheet design. Table 1 summarizes selected examples of HPGR applications in the hard rock mining industry. The main benefits of HPGRs are energy savings which leads to lower operating costs, and its stable operating characteristics that can better cope with variations in ore hardness when compared to the conventional SAG mill-based comminution circuits."

"Data for underground mine-hoist ropes determined in the Ontario Special Rope Tests were obtained, encoded and analyzed statistically. "The Premier mine; owned by Silbak Premier Mines; Limited; is 14 miles from Stewart at the head of Portland canal. Development of the property began in 1918; and since chat time a very large amount of gold and silver as well as some lead and copper have been produced from the mine.The area in the vicinity of the mine is underlain by greenstones tuffs, and sediments of Mesozoic age, belonging to the Bear River formation of the Hazelton group. These rocks are intruded by a stock 2 miles in diameter, composed of orthoclase porphyry and called the Premier porphyry. It sends numerous sill-like and dyke-like tongues into the Bear River formation, and is intruded in turn by a granodiorite outlier of the Coast Range batholith. The orebodies occupy fractures and fracture or shear zones. Primary ore consists chiefly of pyrite, galena, and sphalerite, with some chalcopyrite. The upper 300 feet, or locally 600 feet, contained presumably secondary silver minerals."

PRIOR to June, 1937, the employees of Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Ltd., at Timmins, Ontario, received medical care for themselves under a contract system developed through an agreement between the employer, employee, and a contract physician. This form of practice is common to the mining industry in Ontario. But with the improvement in mining methods and conditions of living, and through an increasing demand for provision of a complete medical care, it was not any surprise when the employees of the Hollinger mine approached organized medicine and indicated their desire for a plan to provide their families with a more or less complete medical service in addition to that supplied for themselves. In April, 1937, this approach was made, and on June 18th, 1937, the Hollinger Employees' Medical Services Association was formed and started to provide medical services. A review of five years' experience is now presented. The Association provides complete medical service for the employee, his wife and family, as well as those dependents who are the total responsibility of the employee. The employee membership is limited to employees at the Hollinger mine in Timmins who reside in the immediate vicinity. The employee is examined by a Company doctor on application for employment and is subject to further examination by a specialise in chest diseases under the direction of the Workmen's Compensation Board of Ontario. The wife and family are not subject to examination but have to be registered when the employee is accepted for employment. The dependents, other than the immediate family, are subject to medical examination and approval after the employee has applied for such dependent or dependents to be admitted. Membership in the Association is obligatory when the employee is hired, but at the end of any Association year he may drop out if he so wishes.

The recovery of zinc in refineries is strongly affected by the formation of zinc ferrites during the roasting of zinc concentrates. To achieve the highest zinc recovery most of these plants operate under high acidity and high temperature conditions in their leaching circuits. However, under these conditions high iron dissolution occurs. For iron control the common practice is to precipitate it as jarosite, and calcine is normally used as neutralizing agent. This practice causes a significant loss of metal values associated with the calcine, such as zinc ferrites and silver insoluble phases. These metal values are carried by the jarosite into confined waste in many plants. In order to diminish such losses, it is necessary to use a neutralizing agent that could substitute the use of calcine. An alternative neutralizing could be the basic zinc sulfate (BZnS). This work presents the results of a laboratory analysis on the required conditions for the BZnS production from process streams of a zinc refinery plant. Neutralizing behavior of BZnS was evaluated in iron precipitation as jarosite, in order to establish the feasibility of replacing the calcine and decrease the loss of zinc and other metals values during the iron removing step of the hydrometallurgical circuit of the zinc refinery under study.

The world nowadays faces many challenges associated with excessive utilization of fossil, fuels, such as poor air quality and greenhouse gas emissions. Hydrogen appears to be an attractive alternative to the conventional, fossil, fuels with better energy efficiency and less environmental, impact. Pd and Pd-based alloy are the most often used membranes for hydrogen separation due to their superiority over other membranes. However, the stability of the commonly-used thin Pd-based composite membranes at high temperatures still, remains a big challenge. In this presentation, we will, report our progress on thin Pd-Ru alloy composite membrane by electroless plating high temperature applications.

The straight Y-shaped silica nanorods have been synthesized on Si wafer by thermal chemical evaporation of mixed powders of silica and graphite at 1300_ and condensation on Si substrate without assistance of any catalyst. The synthesized samples were characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy. The results suggested that the straight Y-shaped silica nanorods have uniform diameter about 50-200nm and neat smooth surface. The growth of such silica nanorods may be a result of the fluctuation of external conditions and internal structure faults causing a change in the growth direction of silica nanorods developed.

Three series of membranes were prepared by blending polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) or poly(vinylidene difluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) [P(VDF/HFP)] with sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (S-PEEK), sulfonated polysulfone (SPU), or sulfonated polystyrene, in order to develop novel PEM membranes suitable for melt processing. By means of incorporating fluorine-containing block copolymer into the blended system, acceptable proton conductivity and low water containing PEM materials were prepared. The effect of sulfonated poly([vinylidene difluoride-co¬hexafluoropropylene]-b-styrene) block copolymers as compatiblizers was investigated: conductivity was enhanced for S-PEEK/fluoropolymer blends. Microstructures for the blends were examined by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM).
