Although the measurement of blast vibration close to the blasthole is critical to the understanding of rock fragmentation mechanisms and blast damage in the rock masses, limited experience for such monitoring exists. Because much higher vibration amplitude and frequency ranges are expected in rock masses close to an explosive charge as compared to far field vibrations, different problems from those for the far field monitoring must be considered for near field blast vibration monitoring. Currently, guidelines for design of the near field blast monitoring systems do not exist. This paper describes the development of an integrated technique for vibration monitoring close to a blast hole, including selection and installation of transducers, design of a monitoring system and signal recording. A densified cement was designed for grouting accelerometers in order to match p-wave impedance between the rock and grout. The monitoring technique described has proven suitable for blast vibration monitoring within 2 m to 15 m of a blast hole having loading conditions similar to production blasts.

"IntroductionAn integrated Truck Management Information System (Truck MIS) evolves as seemingly separate functions combined to yield a single homogeneous result / product. The concept of a computer integrated Truck MIS includes truck dispatch, truck maintenance management and truck weighing.A truck management system is only as good as the information / data bases input to it. The concept of an integrated system works best with automated data gathering. Automated data gathering provides timely and normally, the most accurate historical information/data bases. Data bases are, however, historical, which is a problem to be overcome in a computerized truck management information system, especially in regards to a truck dispatch system as loading sites / loading conditions and some dump site conditions continually change. As these changes occur, data base s must change as well, and thus the need for the continual update of data bases that the computer uses for a Truck MIS.For a truck dispatch system to achieve reliability / viability, dispatch decisions need to revolve around real time data gathered in an automated way. Integration of all truck management function s through automated data gathering lead s to the best over-all system.An integrated system is a combination of many different factors and is only as good as each factor / building block put in the system. With the proper building blocks, an integrated Truck MIS is very feasible - an MIS System that includes weighing, time and motion study, truck maintenance and maintenance management, as well as truck dispatch.Truck MISAn integrated Truck MIS provides for truck dispatch as the ultimate end result, a truly automated /integrated truck dispatch system (to function non-operator-dependent). The following comprises its central building blocks:-Time.- Haul Cycle Segments.Truck Status, i.e. Load on truck,- being loaded,- loaded,- unloaded,- in service,- out of service.- Vehicle Location.Loading Equipment Status.- in service,- out of service.Optional- distance travelled in each haul segment.With this data provided on a non-operator dependent basis, it is possible to build good data bases so a computer can make truck dispatch decisions. Harsh and dynamic construction sites are generally equipped with cranes in order to rapidly and conveniently move heavy loads from one location to the other. If not properly inspected and managed, this operation can be very hazardous and lead to accidents. As such, a reliable and self-contained monitoring system that can update construction and safety personnel about the status of the crane, the weight of the load lifted, the location of the boom with respect to nearby buildings and other tower cranes, and the weather conditions under which the crane is operating, is deemed necessary. This can lead to significant time and cost savings as well as safety and productivity improvement due to the accuracy and immediacy of relevant on-site crane information delivery. This paper takes the initial steps and presents research targeted at evaluating the capability of wireless sensor networks (WSN) for monitoring tower crane operations in construction environments. A reliable long range WSN system is implemented and information is obtained from various special-purpose sensors (temperature, wind, proximity, etc.) mounted on special motes that relay data to and from each other and a central hub. The latter continuously monitors and manages network performance and relays incoming data to the host application. This application, in turn, displays the received data, and maps it onto a user-friendly visualization scheme, triggering alarms when a set of pre-programmed rules and safety conditions are crossed. The components of the proposed system have been tested through proof of concept experiments and preliminary results highlighted the potential of WSN systems for improving monitoring of tower cranes and reducing related accidents on construction sites, especially in Lebanon and the Middle East region where safety precautions are usually not properly implemented.

THE law of our present industrial society is the law of the jungle. By this I mean survival of the fittest. I do not refer to man or animal or the development of superior genetic strain. Rather do I refer to one's product, one's process, or one's material of construction. Each must perform in a superior manner or it is doomed to extinction; it must be steadily improved so that it can meet the competition of ether materials, of other equipment, or other processes. We have before us the classic examples of the horse and buggy vs the automo-bile, cf silk vs nylon, of the steam locomotive vs the diesel engine; in each case, a superior product has virtually wiped out its predecessor. Furthermore, a product, process, or piece of equipment is sold on its performance, together with engineering data which define its •characteristics and performance. For the most part, the present day sales-man must deal in terms of engineering performance of his product; he must know competitive materials -their strength and limitations as well N either old fashioned salesmanship, tradition, nor custom could have saved the horse and buggy from extinction; a superior product which has been steadily and con-sistently improved won out, 'and in turn, this change-over caused a dramatic• change in our whole way of life.

Subsequently, the author visited key officials and institutions in Canada, the United States, the Republic of South Africa, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Poland. Material from the Australian province of New South Wales and Hungary was also included.The report that resulted included, among other sections: (1) the history of wire ropes and trends in manufacturing technology; (2) a review of mine hoisting practices; (3) the requirements regarding safety factors; (4) a review of the various operations and their potential future development; (5) the criteria for rope replacement; (6) potential future developments that could take place in both hoisting and rope inspection practices in Canada; and (7) recommendations.Subsequently, the report was issued by OMOL, and as a CD-ROM by CANMETMMSL. In this paper the author presents the key findings and the recommendations made in the study."

The mining community is geographically remote and widely dispersed. There is a growing requirement for formalized professional development of members by professional associations, and increasing recognition of the advantages of continuing education and training by both individuals and corporations. Working against these trends are the increasing expense and time commitments required for attendance at conventional courses and workshops. The result is a perceived need for a readily accessible source of continuing education and technical reference on the Internet. The design constraints for an Internet model for professional development include: ? browser compatibility, with any time, any place, any pace accessibility; ? a content presentation model with low bandwidth requirements, appropriate interactivity for examples, tools and reviews, and viewer performance monitoring capabilities; ? formal accreditation of content, presentation and process so that viewer achievements may be formalized in terms of widely recognized Continuing Education Units; ? availability of tools for conversion of source material to the presentation format with minimal effort. A model that meets the design constraints is presented and illustrated by examples from an existing Internet site for continuing education in mining.

"A 28-year study of cross folds leads to the conclusion that the northwest-southeast folds recognized in many areas of North America are part of a regional pattern. Detailed examination of over 650 geological maps and reports of Ontario indicates that this folding can be traced across the province. Evidence is presented that this fold pattern played an important part in determining the pattern and scale of intrusion, that its recognition in the field can aid in defining stratigraphy, folding and faulting, and that it may have played an important role in channeling hydrothermal or magmatic mineralization. IntroductionThe concept of regional cross folding in Ontario is not new. W.H. Gross (1955) discussed regional cross folds in the Archean of Northwestern Ontario, and A.M. Goodwin (1961) referred to regional cross folds in the Archean of Ontario and Quebec. However, the interpretation in this paper is new.The writer saw a cross fold for the first time, underground, at Little Long Lac Gold Mines in Geraldton, Ontario, in 1951. This recalled the ""transverse folds"" on E.R. Faribault's classical maps of Nova Scotia, published by the Geological Survey around the turn of the century; M.E. Hurst's cross fold(s) at Timmins, Ontario (Figure I); and the cross folds mapped by A.W. Jolliffe in the Yellowknife area of the Northwest Territories. All these mapped cross folds had one thing in common with the fold at Little Long Lac: A northwest-southeast axial trend. Were such cross folds of purely local extent, or might they be indicative of a widespread regional fold pattern? If so, has such folding any significance for mineral exploration or potential?By 1959, based on a study of about 1000 Canadian geological maps and reports, including 291 in Ontario, the writer reached the conclusion that cross folding trending northwest-southeast is so widespread as to constitute a pattern of folding, and that such cross folding should produce changes in plunge along pre-existing greenstone fold belts."

Stirred milling of nickel laterites offers possibilities for improving liberation and selective size reduction of soft nickel-bearing minerals in laterites. Batch grinding tests were performed in a Netzsch LME4 stirred mill on siliceous goethitic (SG), goethitic (G), and saprolitic (SAP) nickel laterite samples (- 2000 ?m particle size) to evaluate the effect of stirrer speed, solid content, water salinity and grinding time. A fine mineral product (-38 µm) was used to evaluate the effect of selective grinding and Ni upgrade. The optimum grinding time for the highest Ni upgrade was 0.25 min, 0.1 min and 0.1 min for the SG, G, and SAP nickel laterite, respectively. A new feed (38-2000 µm) for each nickel laterite sample was prepared for batch grinding tests under the optimum grinding conditions. Upon grinding the 38-2000 µm feed, the - 38 µm product confirmed the effect of selective grinding and nickel upgrade. Size classification followed by stirred milling is a suggested process for Ni upgrade. The best Ni upgrade result was achieved on the SG nickel laterite among the three samples. The Ni grade increased from 0.85% to 1.37%, with 27.8% Ni recovery. Bottle roll leach tests showed that for SG and SAP samples selective grinding had no dramatic effect on Ni extraction due to the slow leach rate of hard mineral particles. Stirred milling of G sample increased the surface area of goethite, resulting in higher Ni extraction. Gravity concentration through a Knelson Concentrator was not effective in the further treatment of the stirred milling products either due to the poor operating conditions or due to the mineralogy characteristics of the feed samples. The energy requirement in the stirred milling was investigated. The first pass of the signature plots study is critical for the purpose of selective grinding, because the best result on selective grinding is achieved in the early stage of the grinding process.

"Mine hoisting machinery, of which wire rope is an essential part, is developing, in Canada as well as in other parts of the North American continent, into highly sophisticated equipment. Heavier payloads are now required to be raised from steadily increasing depths at higher rates of speed and production. These hoisting conditions have, of necessity, brought about a major change in the production of steel roping wires and the wire ropes manufactured from them.Operators and designers of hoisting equipment are requesting a very much more efficient ratio of strength to weight in hoisting ropes, so that heavier loads may be raised from greater depths by ropes which will provide a predeterminable life span on which the operator may depend.The cost of wire rope to the operator is very low indeed, usually less than $0.01 per ton of payload, but the cost of unexpected shutdown periods, due to rope maintenance or change, can be extremely high -particularly in operations where a continuously high rate of production is an absolute necessity. Mine hoist ropes with a higher strength to weight ratio are now being made and used in some areas of Canadian mining, and a general understanding of the performance we may expect from them is required."

"Introduction to the Syncrude OperationSyncrude Canada Ltd., located 42 km north of the city of Fort McMurray, Alberta, (Fig. I) is an integrated operation that has produced synthetic crude oil from the Athabasca oil sand deposit since 1978.The operation, consisting of a surface mine, an extraction plant, a bitumen upgrader, and a utilities plant, is currently capable of producing over 60 million barrels of crude oil per year. Production is expected to increase to 70 million barrels of crude oil per year over the next five-year period with no major changes to equipment or process planned.The Syncrude surface mine, producing a total of 675 000 tonnes of ore and waste per day, rates as one of the largest mines in the world. A strip mining method is utilized, with two or three operating benches necessary to excavate a total depth varying between 60 m and 70 m. The 20 m to 30 m of overburden is removed by electric and hydraulic shovels and 200-ton haul trucks, and dumped in the mined-out pit for final storage. The overburden operation creates a flat bench near the top of the ore zone on which the four 60 m3 draglines operate. The draglines excavate interbanded ore and waste in the highwall, with ore placed on the operating bench in windrows, and waste returned to the mined-out pit. The windrowed ore is reclaimed by four bucketwheel reclaimers, and discharged onto a conveyor system for transfer to the extraction plant."

"This paper presents and compares the physical properties of Gelfill and cemented hydraulic fill (CHF) obtained by lab experiments. Gelfill consists of tailings, different binders such as Portland cement, fly ash and blast furnace slag and an alkali activator such as sodium silicate. The CHF and Gelfill samples with various mixture designs were cast and cured for 28 days. The influence of sodium silicate concentration, pulp density and mixing time on the mechanical properties of samples were evaluated using the uniaxial strength test. Mercury intrusion porosimetery (MIP) was used to analyse the microstructure of CHF and Gelfill samples.This study concludes that: (i) The mechanical properties of CHF can be improved by the addition of appropriate amount of sodium silicate. (ii) The rate of strength acquisition in Gelfill samples is faster than CHF samples over 28 days of curing period. (iii) Mixing time strongly influences the mechanical properties of Gelfill samples but did not have any effect on CHF samples. (iv) The MIP analyses indicate that the pore size distribution and total porosity of Gelfill and CHF were different, and this did contribute to higher strength development of the Gelfill samples. INTRODUCTIONThe increased depths of mines in the Canadian Shield and the high stress associated with these depths favour a new method of mine backfill that can both meet strength requirements and help mine productivity. The mine backfill mainly consists of tailings, water and binder materials, the latter being most expensive. Gelfill is a new mine backfill material whose binder usually consists of alkali activators such as sodium silicate and other cementitious materials such as blast furnace slag and normal Portland cement. Although sodium silicate has been used in concrete manufacture, the use of this material in mine backfill is relatively new (Doucet, 2007, Razavi, 2007). Until very recently there have been only a few isolated publications, mostly out of McGill University, regarding mine Gelfill (Razavi, 2007 and Kermani et al., 2009 and 2010). These papers have investigated some of the basic mechanical properties and mechanical behaviour of Gelfill. However, the physical performance of Gelfill in various conditions has yet to be understood. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to investigate the influence of mixing time and sodium silicate concentration on the mechanical performance of Gelfill and CHF through a series of experiments. Moreover, the microstructure of the Gelfill and CHF samples was studied."

With columns being installed in rougher section at Miduk Copper Complex, the rougher feed mainly reports to rougher-scavenger cells. To evaluate the efficiency of regrinding circuit, we conducted flotation experiments on samples of the feed and the products of the regrinding circuit. The grade difference of these products at 85% recovery was considered as the efficiency index. Results show that, with weight recovery of the rougher-scavengers the efficiency of the circuit increases. Exclusion of the rougher-scavenger concentrate from the feed to the regrinding circuit, resulted in an increase in the efficiency index from 10.12 to 17.6%.

According to design criteria, 75% of the final product was expected to be produced by the rougher columns, while most of the feed consisting of liberated valuable particles is introduced into rougher-scavengers. To liberate locked particles, the rougher-scavengers concentrate is introduced into the regrinding circuit (see Figure 1 below). The regrind mill is in reversed closed circuit with a secondary hydrocyclones cluster, and the cyclone overflow is introduced into three parallel cleaner columns. Cleaners concentrate reports to concentrate thickener and the column tailings is introduced into six mechanical cleaner-scavenger cells. The cleaner-scavengers concentrate reports to the regrind circuit(Figure 1)."

"Excess Gibbs energy is a thermodynamic parameter which quantifies the difference between the value of the Gibbs energy for a real mixture and that for an ideal mixture. More specifically the partial molar excess Gibbs energy of a species (i) in a mixture is indicated by the change in the overall excess Gibbs energy of the solution as the number of moles of species (i) changes while keeping temperature, pressure and the number of moles of all other species in the solution constant. Generally it is obtained from the activity coefficient which in turn can be obtained for a species in a mixture using a variety of models. The most widely used method is to use UNIFAC. Flotation is probably the most important process in the concentration of minerals and requires the use of reagents such as collectors and frothers. There is abundant experimental data which illustrates that collectors of different alkyl chain lengths will change the contact angle and that frothers of different structures and molecular weights will result in changes in key flotation properties such as froth behavior, surface tension and critical coalescence concentration. In this paper it is shown that there is a strong linear relationship between measured parameters such as froth volume/height, surface tension, critical coalescence concentration and contact angle and the partial molar excess Gibbs energy of the molecules used. Proposals are made to explain these correlations.INTRODUCTIONAs is well known froth flotation is arguably the most widely used process in the separation of minerals. In broad terms the process relies on the use of reagents known as collectors to adsorb onto a mineral surface and thus render the mineral particle hydrophobic. Alkyl thiolates are very commonly used for this purpose. The hydrophobicity is induced as a result of the alkyl group’s molecular structural properties which results in it forming a non-ideal mixture with the process water. Surfactants (or frothers) are typically alcohols and are known to lower the surface tension of the system and also inhibit bubble coalescence and reduce bubble size. Since alcohols are polar they will also form a non-ideal mixture with water. The hydrophobic mineral attaches to the bubble and rises to the froth phase where the valuable mineral is recovered as a concentrate. Frothers have often been characterized using the so-called HLB (hydrophobic-lipophilic balance) number but recently it was shown that the use of activity coefficients (?) or excess Gibbs energy (G ex ), which is calculated using equation (1) is a much more appropriate way to describe the behavior of these reagents in non-ideal mixtures with water (Corin and O’Connor, 2014)."

Iwenty-one ore dusts of varying mineralogy, sulphur content and reputed in-mine explosibility were selected from eight mines. After chemical and mineralogical analysis and sieving into two size fractions (+45/ -63 microns and -45 microns), these sarrples and seven pure minerals were tested for explosibility in oxygen in a Harbnann chamber. '!he maximum explosion pressures and maximum rates of pressure do not correlate with sulphur content alone; the types of minerals are also .important. Residues were analyzed to check the combustion reactions. Further comparisons between laboratory and mine results are planned to improve predictability.

Vale Canada?s Birchtree Mine, located in Thompson Manitoba, has been experiencing problems with hanging wall / footwall dilution, as well as sloughing off of adjacent stopes and temporary stope block backs. Birchtree Mine is interested in determining how time affects the stability of their open stope blocks. Many factors simultaneously influence open stope stability (rock mass quality, joint condition, stress condition). This makes it challenging to determine the influence of a single parameter such as exposure time or stand-up time. This study focuses on determining the effect of exposure time on open stope dilution and combines stress analysis and empirical based approaches.

"At the start of a new shaft project, a specific number of ground investigations are performed. However, it is not uncommon that the ground conditions during shaft sinking may differ from the designed ones. Therefore, it is extremely important to use tools which minimize discrepancies and to include a monitoring system in the shaft design to collect sufficient data. The paper presents an overview of existing monitoring techniques and discusses future works required to improve, not only the construction during shaft sinking, but also the lining design methodology. INTRODUCTION In most cases, the investigations performed at the start of a new shaft are based on the analysis of rock and soil probes obtained from boreholes. In practice, such analysis performed on a single core often leads to different results when conducted by various experts. The discrepancy in core analysis influences further rock mass assessment and design assumptions. It is not uncommon that the ground conditions during shaft sinking may differ from the designed ones, which affects the estimated stress and strain state of the shaft lining. Therefore, it is extremely important to use tools which minimize such discrepancy and to include into the shaft design a monitoring system to collect sufficient data, which enables control of important phenomena, not only during shaft sinking but also during the life of the shaft. Furthermore, the information collected during shaft sinking, while it is important for proper shaft lining design and updates to the shaft lining due to the local mining and geological conditions, it is also important after shaft sinking. In the whole shaft lifetime, it is not uncommon that the shaft lining is damaged and the liner needs to be renewed (Figure 1) due to various reasons. For this purpose, detailed information collected during construction can be extremely important."

Abstract This paper is an account of an investigation made by the Dominion Observatory with a gravity meter and magnetometer over sulphide concentrations at East Sullivan, Val d'Or, Que., in June, 1947. The topographic relief over the area does not exceed 20 feet. The overburden varies from 0 co 50 feet. The west orebody had been outlined by extensive drilling. The average density contrast between the sulphide body and surrounding rocks is 0.5. Two hundred and sixty gravity and one hundred and ninety magnetic stations were observed. The results are shown on contour sketches. A derailed account is given of the methods employed to reduce the gravity observations. The survey shows that both gravimetric and magnetic methods are useful in delineating sulphide deposits under the conditions in which they occur at East Sullivan. The results indicate that the buried contact of the syenite intrusive southeast of the orebody could be traced with the gravimeter and chat the magnetometer was of little value for that purpose. Gravity anomalies due to the varying depths of overburden are negligible as compared to the magnitude of the total anomalies. Introduction The project was first suggested at a meeting of the Associate Committee on Geophysics of the National Research Council in September, 1946. At that time it was pointed out that the accuracy and speed of operation of the new gravity meters made them of special importance for geophysical prospecting and it was highly desirable to have an objective test of the performance of an instrument of this kind in delineating an orebody of known dimensions and density characteristics. Several years ago, a private company did some work with a gravimeter over the Amulet deposits, near Noranda. Unfortunately, the topography there is rather rugged, with hills and ravines exceeding 100 feet, so that the topographical effects rendered it impracticable to distinguish between anomalies due to the sulphides and those due to surface irregularities. An orebody of a typical nature, where the disturbing topographical corrections were not excessive, was therefore sought.
