This paper studied the phenomenon of room temperature creep deformation at crack tip and its effect on fatigue crack growth rate of a X-70 pipeline steel using compact-tension (CT) specimen on a MTS 810 testing machine. Time-dependent deformation at the crack tip under constant load was observed in this steel at room temperature and the amount of deformation produced was seen to depend on loading rate and the magnitude of stress intensity factor. It is found that there exists a critical stress intensity factor below which the deformation decreases with time when the applied load remains constant. It is also found that the occurrence of room temperature creep obviously affects the subsequent fatigue crack growth rate. The observed behavior was explained based on dislocation theory.

The present work is achieved in the framework of a French national program on modeling and experimental characterization of the thermo-mechanical properties of refractory materials (PROMETHEREF). This research program is aimed to establish fair models and experimental database and to make it available to industrial partners for numerical simulation of industrial structures made of these materials. The present paper focuses on two silica-alumina refractory castables, an andalusite based one and a bauxite based one. We will present the first rheological characterization results achieved at room on normal and preheated samples of these two refractory castables. Refractory castables are characterized with the help of four points bending tests, compression tests and tensile tests.

In an effort to produce less expensive titanium sheet via roll compaction, the room temperature compaction behavior of titanium sponge granules (99.9% pure, Alfa Aesar) was studied under uniaxial die compaction. The titanium sponge granules were irregularly shaped, with a high degree of porosity, having a maximum particle size of 3mm. Manual die compaction was conducted using a Carver hand press, in a hardened tool steel die with 12.61 mm inner diameter. Uniaxial die compaction in a hardened tool steel die with 9.50 mm inner diameter was also performed using a Gleeble® 3500 thermal-mechanical simulation testing system which allowed for controlled deformation rates. Compaction behavior of the titanium sponge was studied using well-established compaction equations (Heckel, Panelli-Filho and Ge), and it was observed that compaction rate influences the room temperature compaction behavior of this material. The Heckel analysis of the titanium sponge showed that the behavior of the material could be analyzed in two compaction pressure regimes. In the low pressure regime (<100 MPa) the granules exhibited high compressibility, while; in the high pressure regime (>100 MPa) lower compressibility of the titanium sponge was observed.

This mine is situated at Point Aconi, Cape Breton , Nova Scotia, and is a replacement for the 100-year-old Princess Collie ry. It is a slope mine which is the continuation of a s trip mine operation. There are fives lopes from the surface driven with Dosco Dintheaders - this marks the first time these machines were used in North America. There are four room -and-pillar sections, each equipped with a Lee Norse HH106 continuous miner, a "Top Dog" roof bolter and two Wagner diesel Teletrams. There are also two Eimco 913 diesel LHD&apos;s , which are used for clean-up in the mines. This paper describes the mining operations of this 800,000-tpy mine which, in less than a year and a half , has been developed to the stage where four sections are producing coal at the desired rate.

Lacy copper has been an on-going concern at Atlantic Copper for at least 10 years and was first reported to Glencore Technology in mid-2010. Over the past 12 years, many of the plates were replaced due to age and general deterioration however; plate passivation and lacy copper issues have persisted. After analyzing all the possible causes of this phenomena, it was found that the problem is caused by a degradation of stainless steel as a consequence of the deposition of Sb oxides. These deposits act as passivating agents of stainless steel, which reduces the density of copper nuclei, causing defective copper deposit, with low thickness and ductility. After doing several tests for reducing/removing the phenomena, the over-riding factor was found to be the anode-cathode overlap. An adequate overlap eliminates the problem of "lacy copper". This was verified during an eight month trial with anodes extended 2.5cm in length. Longer anode not only avoids the appearance of lacy copper, but also recovers cathodes that already have lacy copper. On the other hand polishing of plates only gives rise to a temporary solution that requires on-going polishing, to avoid the re-appearance of lacy copper. INTRODUCTION The electrolytic copper refinery of Atlantic Copper in Huelva (Spain) was commissioned in 1970 with an initial capacity of 40,000 t of cathodes per year. In 1975 the copper refinery was expanded to 108,000 t/year. From 1994 to 1996, a new expansion together with the implementation of ISA permanent cathode technology led to a capacity of 215,000 t/y. Since 1995, a progressive increase in the current density up to 350 A/m2 has been accomplished, which together with an increase in the number of cells from 1,120 to 1,204, has led to the present cathode production capacity of 290,000 t/y A lack of copper deposition in the lower part of the steel permanent cathodes was first reported in 2010. This phenomenon is known as “Lacy copper” because of the appearance of the copper deposit as it can be seen in Figure 1. The occurrence of this phenomena was relatively low and was assumed to be originated by an excessive anode scrapping. Nevertheless, in December 2015 Lacy Copper was observed in a significant amount of copper cathodes giving rise to the following issues: Increased tramp copper – housekeeping and maintenance problems Poor appearance of cathode deposit and untidy looking bundles

Although some mine hoisting systems incorporating steel wire ropes on drum hoists experience completely dependable performance on the hoist ropes for many years, other rope records illustrate an erratic behaviour pattern and, as such, become a source of concern to the operator. This paper describes the causes of the difficulties most commonly encountered and incorporates methods of providing preventative or corrective maintenance. When such a program is utilized wisely, within the allowable limits of shaft time available, it can be the means of avoiding many unforeseen circum-stances and of reducing operating costs, as well as rope costs, to a mini-mum.

The hope is expressed, however, that the paper will be of additional assistance, and of particular help in introducing sound maintenance principles to those who are moving into this field of operation for the first time.Hoist RopesWITH a multi-rope friction winder system, structural upset within the hoist rope's cross section can occur if the ropes slip in the drum treads. This upset will usually appear at either end of the rope at the tangent point of the drum or deflection sheave with the respective conveyance in the normal uppermost position. This slipping action on the drum causes the outer cover of a Full Locked Coil or the strands of a stranded rope to shift, leading to structural upset. The result very often means that the ropes have to be withdrawn from service before completing their maximum service potential.The cause of any rope slipping in its tread can be associated with a discrepancy in tension of that rope between one side of the drum and the other."

In this paper, the hardware foundations and data collection methods of a real time collision avoidance system for electric surface mining rope shovels are described. The primary goal of the system is to help a shovel operator avoid accidentally colliding the shovel?s dipper with either a nearby haul truck or the shovel?s tracks. To achieve this goal, the system requires complete and precise knowledge of the shovel?s geometry and movement, as well as the location of any nearby haul trucks. This paper describes the subsystems created to acquire this necessary information. This system is unique in that all of its components are mounted solely on the shovel and that it is designed to be easily retrofitted to a shovel without significant modifications.

THE object of this paper is to present the various facts that l1ave been revealed during lengthy investigations into the performance of all types of ropes on different hoisting installations. It then goes on to suggest means by which most of these findings could be usefully employed to obtain more economical rope lives with increased safety. "The Ross mine, a subsidiary operation of Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Limited, is near the north end of lot 1, con. II, Hislop tp., Ontario. The property comprises the north half of lot 1, con. II, and the south onethird of lot 1, con. III. It is readily reached by a good motor road from the village of Ramore, 7 1/2 miles to the southeast on the Ontario Northland railway. The mine is being developed to a depth of 1,500 feet, and the current daily production rate is approximately 300 tons. From the inception of operations in March 1935 until December 31, 1945, 692,000 tons of ore, with a total value of $5,762,685, was milled . The silver to gold ratio of 1.48 to 1 is unusually high for Ontario gold mines.TYPE OF 0REBODIES AND MINERALIZATIONThe orebodies consist of lens-shaped and pipe-like stringer lodes and tabular vein zones composed of parallel quartz stringers. The host rocks are steeply inclined eruptive breccias and tuffs, striking N.70°W., intruded by very small stocks of red syenite. The orebodies appear to be spatially related to an intricate system of fault planes. Hydrothermal alteration is widespread and is not zonally related to individual quartz stringers. The wall-rocks contain abundant fine-grained pyrite, but gold is confined to the quartz stringers.RELATIONSHIP TO REGIONAL STRUCTURELack of outcrops has prevented the detailed mapping of the Keewatin complex in the vicinity of the Ross mine with the degree of success that has been achieved in the Porcupine area.A northwesterly trending belt of slates and greywackes, bounded by faults, forms the central part of a broad anticlinal arch about 3 1/2 miles north of the Ross shaft. Lava flows forming the south flank of the structure face south toward the mine. If the sediments are to be tentatively correlated with the large areas of Keewatin slates and greywackes of the Porcupine area, it must be assumed that they are younger than the lava flows and that they have been down-faulted."

Rossland is in the West Kootenay district; 5 miles north of the International boundary and 4 miles west of Columbia River at Trail. The first claim in the district was located in 1887; but there was little activity until 1890; when the showings that later became important were staked and development began. Production increased rapidly from 1; 800 tons in 1894 to a peak of 360; 000 tons in 1903; and averaged 286; 000 tons for the next 13 years. It declined sharply in 1917; and continued to decline until the closing of the main mines in 1928. Between 1933 and 1941 leasers mined a further 137; 000 tons. Total output has been about 6; 200; 000 tons; with average recovery of 0.47 oz. gold; 0.6 oz. silver; and 1 per cent copper. The total value was $82; 500; 000; of which aboµt three-quarters was in gold; the camp still leads the province in total gold produced. Ninety-eight per cent of the tonnage came from a small compact area worked by four inter-connected mines : the Le Roi (39 per cent); Centre Star (25 per cent); War Eagle (24 per cent); and Josie (10 per cent); all now owned by the Consolidated Mining and Smdting Company of Canada; Limited.

Ever since the start-up of the plant, management has encouraged innovative approaches in reliability. The first of three papers will discuss the vibration monitoring program in place. The program will be described and two examples will be given: detection of a rolling bearing defect on a pinion driving the ball mill and identification of wear on the bearings of the flotation cells. Figures on the return on investment and the costs of a monitoring program will also be given.The second article will discuss the lubrication aspect. Since the establishment of a good monitoring and oil analyses, Louvicourt mine decreased its oil consumption by more than 38 000 L/yr. In addition, the company set up an oil regeneration system that restores the original properties of oil.The third article will cover the management aspect. Work organization as well as the management philosophy enabling the employes to push predictive technology to higher levels will be examined in detail. The key elements which made it possible for Louvicourt mine to position itself among world-class companies in the organization of maintenance will be discussed."

"A pilot plant study was conducted to evaluate the performance of column flotation in the recovery of gold from a gold/tellurides bearing sulphide ore, and to compare the performance of column flotation to conventional ""mechanically agitated"" flotation.Tests were conducted in a 60 liter glass column with ground flotation feed split from a concurrently operating conventional pilot plant, thus permitting direct comparison between the two processes. During the test program, the effects of wash water rate, gas holdup, froth depth, residence time and flow bias were examined in detail.The ore had an average ""as tested"" feed grade of about 5 g/t gold and 1 % sulphur, with the gold occurring primarily as inclusions of montbragite (Au2Te3) in pyrite, with minor amounts of native gold. Conventional flotation using 60 minutes residence time across four roughing stages recovered about 97% of the gold into concentrates grading about 50 g/t Au. A single stage of column flotation roughing using 25 minutes residence time matched the conventional circuit recovery of 97%, but produced grades of+ 150 g/t Au. INTRODUCTIONColumn flotation is the most significant innovation that has occurred in the mineral processing industry in recent years and has become an important alternative to mechanical flotation. Column flotation has been most widely accepted and applied in cleaning service where it has frequently proven to be superior to mechanically agitated flotation. Roughing in columns has not been ignored, but early testing indicated that columns may not be capable of achieving adequate recovery and, to date, columns have not been seen as serious competitors for mechanical roughers."

Flotation is used in mining to produce concentrates of copper, gold and several other valuable ores. In 2017, a copper mine near Globe, Arizona improved their rougher cells productivity using technically advanced electro-hydraulic actuators in the flotation process by enabling excellent tank pulp level process stability. The new actuators controlled the dart valve position to allow pulp to leave the cell. Tank cell pulp level can change due to feed and discharge fluctuations from neighboring tanks. When traditional pneumatic actuators are used, they have sluggish response times and overshoot due to the inherent physical property of air being compressible. Electro-hydraulic actuators have the benefit of hydraulic stiffness to deliver accurate and repeatable (0.1%) dart valve positioning. The froth layer has more opportunity time to maximize mass transfer into the launderer. The results are an increase in copper recovery by 2-4%. INTRODUCTION In 2013 there was an international flotation technical conference well attended by respected flotation specialists for both mining companies and academia. During the technical session a leading metallurgist was discussing pulp level measurement and said that when he was on the cell deck he stated, pneumatic actuators air cylinders stroking up and down. The presenter then claimed with confidence that "I listened to actuator move so the pulp level in the tank was being controlled!" No one questioned his assumption and I can assert that the audience was quite technical and not shy in their critiques of speakers. The flotation community simply believed that the existing pneumatic technology was enough with no alternative. Having a stable flotation cell pulp level is critical to effective copper recovery. Controlling pulp levels in flotation cells is a complex task that includes modulating dart valves in each cell. The use of REXA Electraulic actuators will decrease the process dead time and maintain froth height in a controlled manner, especially from pulp slurry volume fluctuations from neighboring cells. By reducing flotation cell pulp level tank height variation, a copper mine in Arizona has realized a 2-4% recovery improvement by increasing the froth transfer to the launderers in the rougher cell circuits compared to pneumatic actuators. This paper examines the benefits of using an electro-hydraulic actuator to ensure proper pulp level control and reduce the process operational cost. It will focus on actuator positioning the dart valves to maintain pulp level setpoint at a copper mine in Arizona.

"The commissioning of the 4th concentrator (C4) at Freeport Indonesia in early 1998 increased total mill throughput from 130k to 230k tonnes per day. The C4 flowsheet consists of a single 38 ft diameter SAG mill, four 24 ft diameter ball mills followed by four banks of 4,500 ft3 WEMCO flotation cells.The design of the C4 rougher flotation circuit was based on the expectation that the copper and gold recoveries achieved with the 4500 ft3 flotation cells would be equivalent to or better than that achieved with the 3,000 ft3 flotation cells in the 3rd concentrator (C3) rougher circuit. This assumption was due to the fact that the C4 flotation feed size would be less than 15% +212 microns compared to the C3 rougher flotation feed size of less than 23% +212 microns. By mid 1998 it had become apparent that the C4 rougher flotation copper and gold recoveries were below those predicted.In order to determine the cause of the lower recoveries, stage by stage rougher flotation surveys were performed in all four concentrators. The results of the surveys showed that the C4 rougher flotation circuit had a lower recovery of +200 micron material than that achieved in the C 1, C2 and C3 concentrators. Through mineralogical analysis, it was determined that a majority of the copper contained in the +200 micron fractions was liberated and recoverable. This paper describes the steps taken to increase coarse particle recovery, overall plant recovery and the results achieved."

"A growing public awareness of work-related diseases such as pneumoconiosis and the impact of this awareness on legislative bodies and on the skilled labour market are reasons why the Canadian mining industry must consider dust control of top-drawer importance. Measurements and standards related to the hazard are necessary to control a dust situation and to avoid excessive risk. "The Company known as Rouyn Merger Mines, Limited, was formed in 1943 to take over the ownership of claims in Rouyn and Joannes townships formerly held by East Rouyn Mines, Limited, O'Neil Thompson Mines, Limited, and the Hosking-Cockeram Prospecting Syndicate. The NorandaSenneterre branch of the Canadian National railway passes in an approximately east-west direction through almost the entire length of the property. Since 1937, sixty-three diamond drill holes have been drilled from the surface to cross faults on the contact of the Timiskaming sediments with the Abitibi ( Keewatin) volcanics, along which ore has been found to occur. Late in 1945, the sinking of a 3-compartment inclined shaft in the andesite agglomerate beneath the ore zone was commenced. On January 17th, 1947, this shaft had a depth of 944 feet; cross-cuts have been driven north-northwest from the shaft at 150-foot intervals from depths of 200 to 800 feet on the shaft (Fig. 2).GEOLOGYThe western or East Rouyn part of the Rouyn Merger property in which ore is being mined adjoins the area owned by McWatters Gold Mines, Limited, on the east and is underlain by the eastern continuation of the McWatters formations. As at the McWatters, the rocks belong structurally to three areas: (1) the territory north of the Cadillac-Bouzan Lake fault, occupied almost wholly by Abitibi ( Keewatin) volcanics; (2) the area along the south boundary of the property, underlain by Timiskaming conglomerate and greywacke; and (3) the synclinal belt of McWatters volcanics and sediments between areas 1 and 2.1Bouzan fault of Hawley."
