Formulas relating economic optimum busbar cross sectional areas to busbar cost, electric price and financial parameters are reviewed and revised. Application of the formulas is illustrated with discussion of the appropriate choice of parameter values and the sensitivity of the optimum to the parameters. The extension of the single busbar concept to optimization of more complicated arrangements of bus for smelting pots is complicated by the constraint of obtaining a specified current distribution. An example problem illustrates the optimization of a section of a bus network containing a fork, with the imposed limitation of achieving a specified uniformity in the current. In cases where the current in the individual conductors may vary, Kelvin's law does not apply. Further extension of the technique to a full pot set of conductors poses additional problems which are discussed, but whose solution has not yet been accomplished. "Very seldom, if ever, is a molybdenite by-product plant operated exactly the way the process design engineer visualizes it. The best thing the design engineer can do is provide a sound, basic circuit with enough room and flexibility in order that the operating staff can make the necessary modi fi cations to optimize the process. The plant, with minor modifications, should be capable of handling more than one process. This is especially true when the client is having the plant designed for a new process.The writer would like to propose the following ten ""rules-of thumb"" for designing by-product molybdenite plants where the molybdenite is floated out of a copper concentrate. The term rules-of-thumb is used, because there are probably valid reasons for not using one or more of them in a particular plant design. In fact it was 1980 before the writer was all owed to start up a plant where all of these rules were honored in the plant design. This was after 19 years of experience in the design of molybdenite by-product processes and plants. The main reasons for not following the rules are available capital, available space, and the client's experiences based on pilot plant and laboratory test results."

"E. Joe We have been working for some years on the elimination ofCANMET thiosulphates from solutions as a means of protecting ground water and fish streams. Alot of these thiosulphates result from the mill use of S02. Is there any possibility that thiosulphates will be generated by this process?Reply I don't know the answer to your question. I can speculate that there is no question that when one adds SO2 and air to a sulphide pulp one generates a host of unsaturated poly¬cyanates. I unfortunately cannot remember the reactions which arise in the cyanide destruction scheme. I think that if thiosulphate was generated the process wouldn't work. It is not oxidizing enough to destroy the cyanide.R. Wagner Would you comment on the actual cost/ton at the Scottie goldPamour mine concentrator? Would $2.50/ton be typical or is thisPorcupine just a ball park figure.Reply We wouldn't disclose Scottie's costs even if we knew them. I depends on the amount of cyanide and thiocyanate in the effluent. I have given you a hypothetical case. With the conditions stipulated the figures I Have given are realistic.K. Konigsmann I do not believe the use of S02 adds significantly to the thio Noranda Mines salt problem Certainly we use SO2 in many of our mills and thio-salt levels in a number of them haven't changed whether we use or don't use S02. For instance, Orchan and Matagami mills treating the same ore side by side in which one was using S02 and the other wasn't, the thio-salt level was virtually the same in both pulp streams. In the case of Brunswick where alot of SO2 is used (20 tons/day) there is a thio-salt problem but it is relatively insignificant.Reply Thank you for that comment. "Cable bolts are used frequently as a secondary support system (with steel arch support) in difficult stress-strain conditions of deep coal mines. The load transfer mechanism of cable bolts depends on several factors, such as the strength, deformation and geometric properties of the bolts, resin and the surrounding rock mass so-called cable-resin-rock system (CRR system). The bonding length and bolt/borehole diameter ratio strongly influence the final bearing capacity of the CRR system.The study presents the behaviour of CRR system during a pull-out test which is usually used in the carboniferous rock mass in the Czech part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. A series of 28 pull out tests were performed on 3-m-long cable bolts, with various combinations of borehole diameters and bonding lengths, to understand this behaviour. Boreholes were drilled into a solid rock mass consisting of fine-grained sandstone to guarantee similar conditions during the pull-out tests. Video inspection and measurement of borehole diameters were performed to determine their quality and real diameters. Three characteristics were observed from pull-out test results: ultimate pull-out load; displacement of the end of bolt and system stiffness. Numerical modelling by FEM (Finite Element Method) was used to determine the stiffness of the CRR system for variable bolt/borehole ratios and bonding lengths each under constant load. A linear elasto-plastic model and a mohr-coulomb model were used for cable and resin-rock respectively. The results of the experiment may contribute significantly to improving of the methodology of cable bolts installation as well as the design of used cable bolts."

This paper suggests an alternative design approach for an innovative shovel dipper, for use in ground conditions where cutting of virgin ground rather than scooping of blasted material is required. Not only does the new design have an optimized dimension ratio (width:height:depth) and attachment arrangement (angle, position), but also a non-linear pro¯le in 2D and 3D. The approach is based on the simulation of a shovel's duty cycle to verify a pilot dipper model. In order to achieve a realistic simulation that could be used to evaluate a dipper design, the model is e®ectively a descriptor of actual shovel activity under soft ground conditions. The shovel geometry, motion and operation, with an emphasis on digging and dumping kinematics and dynamics are the principal elements of the simulation. The simulation considers a fresh face location, repeating tucking, digging and dumping swing motions within the geometric range of the machine, ending when no more face material remaining within reach without re- positioning. The simulation yields digging force, friction force, trajectory, ¯ll time, ¯ll factor, etc, which may be integrated into two basic considerations: power draw (output) and volume delivered (production), as indicators of dipper performance. The simulation has been used as a tool to modify an existing dipper design, prior to looping further simulation cycles. Ultimately, an optimized or totally-new-concept shape is realized. A prototype dipper as a fractional scale model will be built to verity the performance under actual mining conditions.

"LocationSometimes known as the Bernie Lake mine, the mine is located about 180 km east-northeast of Winnipeg on the northwestern shore of Bernie Lake, close to the Nopiming Provincial Park and the Manitoba-Ontario boundary. The mine is accessed from Lac du Bonnet which is linked to the provincial road system.Brief Description of OperationTantalum Mining Corporation of Canada Ltd. operates an underground mine employing ramp access, room and pillar mining, and shaft hoisting for the production of tantalum, lithium and cesium minerals. Daily campaigned crushing of the tantalum and lithium ores supply separate concentration circuits. Tantalum recovery employs conventional gravity equipment together with recently developed centrifugal concentration methods. All tantalum concentrates go to Cabot Performance Materials for the production of tantalum chemicals and metal. Lithium minerals are recovered using heavy medium separation and silicate flotation to produce spodumene and montebrasite/amblygonite concentrates. The lithium concentrates are shipped worldwide for use in ceramics, specialty glass and mold powders. Cesium processing involves the dry grinding of pollucite as feed stock for the recently built on-site chemical plant dedicated to tl1e production of cesium formate, a high-density drilling fluid for use in the oil industry."

"The NewCrest Cadia operation boasts the largest SAG mill commissioned last June 1998. A request was made to shed some more light on possible SAG mill charge behaviour. Three different software were used to simulate SAG mill charge behaviour:Mishra/Rajamanis MillSoft DEM charge motion program, Radziszewskis agglomerated DEM charge motion program and Powell/Nuricks MillTraj outer trajectories program. The contexts simulated are: 20/30 % charge volume, 65/75/85 % critical speed using the Hi-Lo lifter configuration specified for the mill as well as a Hi-Lo 60 degre lifter face configuration. Further, lifter interval was also studied to determine the effect on power draft. Power predictions are compared with those obtained during the commissioning period.INTRODUCTIONThe NewCrest Cadia operation is located outside of Orange, New South Wales, Australia. With proven reserves of 190 million tonnes at a grade of 0.75 g/t Au, the mill was designed to process 17 Mtpa (2065 tph) of ore with an 86% copper and 73% gold recovery. The grinding circuit (Fig. 1, Table I) boasts the largest SAG mill (Fig. 2) and was commissioned last June 1998."

DURING the past year the Cadillac-Malanie area in northwestern Quebec has been catapulted to the front as one of Canada's most active gold mining districts. Late in 1934 the area was lolling along in the doldrums, with one producing mine and a handful of active prospects. 1935 passed with only slightly increased activity, but saw the start of production at Canadian Malartic mine. Lightning struck in April, 1936, when a new and phenomenally rich ore-body was found in O'Brien Gold mine, and by midsummer the camp was ablaze with activity. An important new discovery on the Pan-Canadian property, and pleasing underground developments at Sladen Malarric, East Malartic, and Lapa Cadillac, in addition to other new developments, lent fodder to the flame, and at present several dozen properties are being actively developed. For the past three seasons, the Geological Survey of Canada has been engaged in a fairly detailed study of the geology and mineral deposits across Cadillac, Malarric, and Fourniere townships. Ir is the purpose of this paper to present a brief preliminary statement of the structural and economic geology and to discuss some of the more important problems that have been found to exist. The reader is requested to remember that the paper is a preliminary one and that therefore the conclusions presented are open to revision. It is impossible to make full acknowledgment for help received, for the writers are indebted to practically every operator and prospector in the area for generous co-operation in the work, and to several private, provincial, and federal geologists for data and frank discussion of problems encountered. Over a score of student assistants from McGill, Queen's, and Toronto have given excellent service. Published reports by Wilson, Cooke, James, Mawdsley, L. V. Bell, and J. J. "Over-all recovery of cadmium has been increased at the plants of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited, since the construction of a slag fuming plant and baghouse where smelter flue dust is recovered. This pa-per outlines the distribution of the cadmium in plant products from the concentrator to the refining department.The leaching of cadmium-bearing precipitates from the zinc plant is also discussed. This consists of a two-stage leach; first with sulphuric acid and then with copper sulphate. Details of the leaches are outlined along with the safety measures practised in handling the hydrogen and arsine evolved.The paper describes the final preparation of electrolyte for the refining cells by purification for copper and thallium. Deposition of cadmium, using a polyacrylamide as an addition agent, is discussed.An outline is given of the melting procedures, under either sodium hydroxide or zinc chloride, and of the sub-sequent treatment of the dross to recover entrained cadmium and thallium."

"This paper outlines the upgrading of a double-drum 2000 hp cage hoist to provide fully-automatic operation from shaft station control panels. The application utilizes programmable controller technology to provide all necessary functions for movement of personnel and material to 22 locations in a 4000 ft shaft.Various functions involving special design considerations such as ""chairing"", ""jogging"", and three modes of ""multi-level calling service"", are outlined. The use of higher level PLC functions to optimize memory utilization and simulate ""elevator service"" required the addition of a comprehensive fault finding software section to aid in troubleshooting.This paper will deal primarily with the automation portion of the project with references made to other pertinent aspects which were prerequisite to automatic operation. It is not intended to deal with every design detail, but rather to provide an overview of what can be done in the area of automation for those considering such an application. INTRODUCTIONEarly hoisting control systems provided only the essential elements of control, leaving many responsibilities with the operator. With advancements in various areas of technology, electromechanical devices were incorporated to enforce slow-down in end zones, control acceleration rates, monitor safety devices, etc. Brake control systems were supplied to allow for ""single-stick"" operator control, regulated deceleration during emergency brake applications, etc.These additions enhanced the over-all performance but were generally confined to speed and current regulation. Some mechanical devices, such as travelling nut limits, etc.; were used to provide ""position"" control to multiple locations within the shaft. These devices, in conjunction with rather extensive relay control panels, did allow for the establislunent of some automatic cage hoists . The hoists were often limited to service from point ""A"" to point ""B""', involving a limited number of levels due to the complexities of the mechanical interfaces employed. Only limited systematic work sequences were possible . .Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) were introduced into industry in the mid-70s and have since gained acceptance in mining applications such as pumping, ventilation, ore handling, etc. This technology, being ""software"" based, allows complexities to reside in the program rather than increasing the number of physical control elements. This has opened the door into hoisting systems for automatic loading and hoisting of ore as well as a means to achieve a comprehensive package of automated cage hoisting functions."

"The use of calcine for selective zinc precipitation requires specialist knowledge to achieve satisfactory flowsheet design. Calcine from the bed of a fluid roaster is preferred, and factors such as the size distribution of ground calcine, the stoichiometric ratio of the calcine precipitant to the initial dissolved zinc concentration and the moisture content of the resultant filter cake are parameters which require critical attention. Extensive testing in a fully-integrated electrolytic zinc plant pilot plant has demonstrated that properly designed selective zinc precipitation plants using calcine as the precipitant are reliable operating units.The advantages of using calcine instead of limestone for selective zinc precipitation include a decreased cost of reagents, as well as avoiding the formation of by-product gypsum.Process simulation modelling has demonstrated that the use of calcine in this context has widespread application in the design of zinc plants with superior impurity and water balance control characteristics. A particularly powerful approach involves closed circuit washing. In this mode, filtrate from the selective zinc precipitation step is used to wash a zinc plant residue such as jarosite, and the resulting filtrate is returned to the selective zinc precipitation section. IntroductionThe Selective Zinc Precipitation (SZP) Process, developed and patented by the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited (EZ) may be used to achieve simultaneously, water balance and impurity control in an electrolytic zinc plantO,2). Impurities which may be controlled by the SZP process include chlorine, magnesium, manganese, potassium and sodium.In the SZP process, basic zinc sulphate is precipitated from a zinc sulphate solution by either limestone, lime or a compound containing zinc oxide, usually calcined zinc sulphide concentrate (calcine) or alternatively zinc oxide fume .The solids containing basic zinc sulphate are separated, typically, by filtration and returned to the zinc plant circuit as a neutralizing agent. The zinc depleted solution can either be discarded, or used to wash residues, thereby achieving water balance and impurity control (Fig. I)."

"Countercurrent decantation circuits(CCD) are often employed in hydrometallurgy to effect solids-liquid separation in combination with a barren solution wash to reduce losses of valuable solution component(s) from the tails. Bechtel Corporation uses its BEMSIM flowsheet-modelling PC computer program to simulate a CCD circuit where the ""dirty"" wash solution contains significant amounts of soluble components. An algorithm successfully models this condition and is simplified to a single expression when the wash solution is a ""clean"" solution containing no solubles. The CCD calculation module is compared to operating data from uranium and nickel-cobalt CCD circuits.IntroductionHydrometallurgical process schemes have often relied on countercurrent washing methods to reduce soluble losses of valuable product in the tails. Commonly used equipment to effect this operation is a CCD circuit of N thickeners in series, where a slurry is fed to thickener I and a wash solution to thickener N; clear pregnant solution overflows thickener I and washed tails exit as underflow from thickener N. CCD circuits of this type are typically employed when the solids tend to slime heavily and where a filter is not economic.A typical CCD circuit usually employs from two to five thickeners and can employ either a ""clean"" washing solution of, say, pure water or else the hydrometallurgical circuit may generate a ""dirty"" barren solution containing an appreciable amount of soluble component which may be advantageously returned to the process as CCD wash solution. Various authors have treated the case for clean washing solutions (Svarkovsky 1977, Merritt 1970). For the case of dirty wash solutions, an algorithm has been developed to enable efficient modelling by the BEMSIM computer program, because the need for an accurate method to calculate soluble losses is required when performing an economic trade-off analysis of the value of product lost in the tails as a function of the number of thickeners."

The Fe assay values from the diamond drill-holes within a magnetite deposit of magmatic origin are utilized in this study. Only assay data from the unoxidized magnetite mineralization was utilized. The data from the overlying hematite mineralization zone was not used. A threedimensional block model estimated using ordinary kriging (OK) is used for analysis purposes. To estimate the non-linear standard deviations (s) and the confidence intervals (CI) of block estimates a discrete Gaussian variogram model is used in this project. The change-of support coefficient (rv) and the block-support correction are used in the ?block-anamorphosis?. A new calculated value of rv is 0.7283, implies that its influence in the block-anamorphosis is not significant. The CIs are calculated from the block-gaussian variables; then back transformed to the raw values. At 95% probability, the CI for the kriged block estimates of Fe values are calculated using Gaussian kriged estimates of the Fe and the corresponding standard deviations (Gaussian). The results indicate that the block estimates with a high influence from relatively small amount of samples can be identified as high-risk estimates.

"Several grinding mill dynamic simulators have been developed in the last half-century. However, complete circuit simulations are mainly limited to academic investigations, and on-site applications for advanced control or real-time optimization are scarce. One particular issue that has certainly curbed a more widespread use is the time and efforts required for model calibration. This paper illustrates this challenge and presents a calibration method based on dynamic simulation using industrial data and laboratory testwork. The simulator models discussed originate from the work of Austin and Luckie (1972) for grinding mills, and Plitt (1976) for hydrocyclones. A two-stage approach based on a least squares minimization allows determining calibration parameters values. Firstly, laboratory testwork are required for characterizing breakage coefficients of the ore. Secondly, step change responses and their simulation— effect of ore and water feed rates on output flow rates and size distributions—allows identifying transport/mixing conditions. Simulation results are in agreement with actual process responses to variations of feed conditions obtained from a plant survey.INTRODUCTIONDynamic models for grinding circuits has been intensively studied since the 1970's notably by Austin and Luckie (1972b), Klimpel and Austin (1984), Rogovin and Hogg (1988), Napier-Munn et al. (1996), Liu and Spencer (2004), and King (2012) among others. The resulting models primarily serve in simulation applications for process equipment sizing, which incidentally also helps developing a better understanding of comminution operations. An obstacle curbing a more widespread and targeted use of grinding simulation for process control and optimization purposes is the time and efforts required for dynamic model calibration. It remains a cumbersome task that is typically not well detailed in technical papers. This could explain why dynamic process simulators are mainly confined to academic applications."

"The Fond-du-Lac uranium deposit was delineated primarily by percussion drilling and a small program of diamond drilling. Drillcore samples from three diamond drill holes as well as digitized gamma logs from percussion and diamond drill holes were utilized to define and implement an algorithm for the conversion of gamma-log data to equivalent-grade data. The procedures and detailed analysis for the provision of assay data for uranium reserve estimation are documented.IntroductionThe Fond-du-Lac uranium deposit is on the south shore of Lake Athabasca, approximately 2 km southeast o f Fond-du-Lac , northern Saskatchewan. It is on the northern rim o f the Athabasca sandstone basin.A train of mineralized glacial erratics was discovered in 1967 by Farnok, Limited by means of a helicopter-borne radiometric survey. In 1969, a program of diamond drilling by Famok was successful in locating in-situ mineralization in the Athabasca sandstone at the apex of the mineralized boulder train. Since 1974, exploration and development work have been performed under a joint-venture agreement between Eldorado Nuclear Limited and Famok Limited, with Eldorado acting as operator.From the discovery drill hole to the development of the gamma-log to equivalent-grade con version algorithm, the deposit had been tested by a total of 222 drill holes, 210 of which were percussion holes and 12 of which were diamond drill holes. The holes are generally vertical and collared at 10-metre centres on fences spaced 20 metres apart. The deposit is approximately 390 metres long, 10 to 40 metres wide and up to 45 metres deep, and is generally confined to the Athabasca sandstone. Uranium occurs as pitchblende, coffinite and uraniferou s goethite."

Froth depth or interface level is an important control variable in column flotation which can influence both grade and recovery. A common method of locating the level is based on sensing the hydrostatic pressure at one or more points along the column. The level position is then calculated from these pressure readings using an equation which includes the bulk density in the froth and bubbling zones. The precision with which the level is detected depends on how well these density values represent both zones. The calculation of these bulk densities from theoretical considerations is not possible and, therefore, the practice is to estimate them by calibration. Unfortunately, the calibration parameters often do not report the level with an acceptable accuracy. A portable conductivity probe has been developed to detect the position of the interface from conductance measurements across the interface. The location of the interface corresponds to the position where a large change in conductance is observed, which is primarily a consequence of the difference in gas holdup between the bubbling and froth zones. This probe can be used to detect the position of the interface to an accuracy of± 5 cm. The probe can be used while the column is in operation, which allows the on-line calibration of the level detection system. Results obtained in its application in a pilot-scale column (0.91 min diameter) are described.
